I don't know, it could work.

If his job is purely 'defensive midfielder' - I'm with Bauer - it could work - depends what support he gets and how savvy those in front and behind of him are.

He was a regular fixture (and captain, I think) in the U21 side as a DMC. Carricks passing varies from game to game it seems, but since it's just a friendly Sven is experimenting.

This is bizarre. How many games has Sven had to try out formations? How many hundreds of tactical substitutions has he made? And now he's experimenting...

I'm just worried he'll become a scapegoat. He'll do a decent job there, but Carrick's passing range is better.

Hey - as carra himself once said - 'it's only fecking England!'

Nah, he played nearly all his u21 football as a CB, even when he was still considered a midfielder by us.

Carrick did himself no favours by being s*** in defending...sometimes he just stands there and watch the action go past him

Agreed - England will just get themselves in the same situation we did a few seasons ago when Gerrard was dropping deeper to pick the ball up off Hamann. Carra just isn't a holding midfielder - just like Ledley King isn't.

This starting eleven tonight are supposed to be those starting against Paraguay.

Yes...let's take the country's second best centre back and stick him in central mid.

Genius Sven...

He's a beaut isn't he ?

A poster on RAWK highlighted that this would probably play out more like a 3-5-2 in the end, with Ashley Cole and Gary Neville overlapping and Becks and Joe Cole tucked in.

This might well work!

I was watching the B game the other evening and thinking to myself that all Carrick was doing was playing himself out of the starting 11.

I'm not sure playing Carra - or any centre back - there makes much sense, but at least he'll shore up the defense I suppose.

The last time this happened it was Keegan's genius plan to play Southgate as holding midfielder to mark Mehmet Scholl... couple of hours later...

Having said that, a 352 might work.

It isn't just about Carra. If he's going to play this formation, then the striker you want on his own holding it up and bringing Gerrard, Lampard and Cole into play is Crouch, not Owen.

That's too much like common sense for Sven tho! Plus he'd never drop Owen if there's a chance he can play some part in a game whether he's suited to a role or not. Sven makes his fvourites fit the formation he wants rather than picking players who suit the formation.

totally. owen could end up completely cut off by decent defenders.
