One of the best defenders of all time IMO, imagine what he could've been like without the drink though.

Played at the top level til mid thirties? Got better as he got older if anything.

Decent career by any measure.

Yeah, those two world cup winners medals mean nothing.

well, the first says nothing about Ronaldo as he never played.

He was the best striker in the world, possible the most talented the game had ever seen and was content to be 'merely' a top class striker, because he loves the pies more than the game.

He is not half the player he should have been.

He has won trophies and scored goals at every club he has been at. Hardly qualifies as "pissing" his career away.

What he has won

Have you heard him sing?

DeMarcus Beasley?

Was meant to add a reply, not quote the above.

To be fair, between the ages of 16-21 that b*****d looked like he was going on to become the undoubted best player of all time.

Then he ate it all away, and despite being a fat lazy bar-steward he's still amongst the top 5 strikers in the game; where Sheva/Henry are considered the best. Just goes to show...if he'd have kept working at football rather than at the pies, he'd be on a completely different planet.

Read this book last summer about Robin Friday, seventies superstar, drunk and substance abuser extraordinaire, interesting stuff:

If Robin Friday was twenty five years old today he would be earning millions and would hopefully be receiving wise counsel from whichever club was lucky enough to have his services. Instead he played in an era when lower division footballers earned half the wages of scaffolders and plasterers and were largely left to their own devices off the field. With a little bit of the pastoral help that today's players get from the bigger clubs who knows....
