Kahnee Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 From PA: British-Norwegian film about a "stoned" elephant, which boasts the film world's first 3D digitally-animated sex scene, is being shown in Cannes today.Simon Pegg, of Shaun Of The Dead fame, has written the script for Free Jimmy and characters are voiced by Jim Broadbent, Woody Harrelson, Samantha Morton, David Tennant and Emilia Fox.The film, which uses computer-generated imagery, centres around a circus elephant addicted to a cocktail of uppers and downers who is used by his keeper to store heroin inside him. It is likely to get an 18 certificate when it arrives in the UK.For the Norwegian creator and director of the film, Christopher Nielsen, the story was inspired by his brother, a heroin addict, who died six years ago.Free Jimmy has been selected for the closing ceremony of Critics' Week at the Cannes Film Festival and the first international public screening takes place today. The film, which features extreme animal activists, Scottish hunters and a Lapland mafia, began life as a comic strip, followed by a cult TV series in Norway.Producers decided to make an English and Norwegian version of the film but, because the Norwegian sense of humour did not translate, Pegg was asked to write a new script. He had to pen the lines of dialogue to the same length as they are in the Norwegian version.Director Nielsen, 43, who declares himself a fan of Walt Disney, with Bambi one of his favourite characters, said: "Simon Pegg said that I might get into difficulties because the English love their pets but I produced an episode of the League Of Gentlemen in which a turtle gets vacuumed by a vet."Free Jimmy is a 15 in Norway but we're expecting an 18 certificate in Britain. I really don't think it would hurt a 15-year-old to see it."As far as I know, it does have the first digitally-animated sex scene, but I hope people see the satire in the film and don't just find it shocking."It's about the consequences of your ideas and your actions. I'm poking fun at fanaticism in general."British actor Jay Simpson, 38, who voices the part of anti-hero "stoner" Flea and is in Cannes today, said: "It's very adult with a different sort of flavour. Some of the jokes are just hysterical. The great thing is that it pokes fun at everyone - no-one comes away intact. That's the fun of it."But it's not Ice Age, I wouldn't advise anyone to take their kids."
