Ipod Itunes & Playlists?

If I create a playlist from songs in my library, then export the playlist to my ipod. If I then delete the tracks from my library to save on hard drive space, do the tracks then disappear from my playlist on the ipod?

 

I'm a bit miffed I can't create playlists directly on the ipod in itunes.
