owen's. given his age, his experience, the stage. i also loved that he all but shoved scholes out of the way at the end of it to finish.

I had this row about ten times that year. I simply cannot understand how, apart from those English anti-English, you can think Bergkamp's was the better goal.

Yes, a terrific pass, a terrific touch, and good finish (but by no means a difficult finish).

Owen beat three defenders on a 40 yard run to goal against what was the best defence in the tournament. Great ball control, superb skills, and finished from the edge of the box. The fact that he was so young is impressive but means little in comparing the raw quality of the goals.

Bergkamp's. Owen's was a great goal, but have you ever seen somebody kill a ball like that, beat a player like that, and finish like that?

Phenomenal goal.

plenty of players, yes. seen very few score a goal starting from the halfway line, at pace, beating argentine defenders for fun and then finishing into the top corner from the edge of the box though.

Yes. Players like Baggio, Platini, Cruyff, etc etc. I've seen Totti do it similarly well. And countless others. People have scored similar goals to Owen's of course. Neither was unique.

I'd include Ebbe Sand's goal against Nigeria as well (danish bias warning). Brilliant chip by laudrup that was.

as solo efforts go, has to be Owen's though.

In World Cups?

Sorry,I just think Bergkamp's was better. There was less margin for error,if you like.

the first touch on bergkamp's goal is probably the hardest ball to control in football. the second touch makes it all the better. much harder to criticise the defending on that goal.

the best thing about owen's technically is the coolness of the finish, other than that it's more a feat of awesome athleticism then skill. couldn't argue with those who says it's a more exciting goal to watch though.

Bergkamp's didn't look like the Argentinians were extras in a television drama about a plucky youngster who went past a few "challenges" and scored.

Ah yes, those Argie defenders, well known for standing around not getting stuck in.

Think he's saying Owen made them look like that.

In 1998, while he was a loyal Red, Owen's goal was better. Now it's Bergkamp's.

The Englischer's goal was always second best.

Bergkamp's technique was incredible. Even the Argies were left gawping in amazement.
