Kicking the ball out of play

I'm fed up with this kicking the ball outof play when someone goes down hurt - encountered two incidents of it over the weekend.

The first was in a match I was ref for in a cub tournament - player went down just as an opposition attack started, opposition kicked the ball out of play, manager comes on, player gets up and says he was faking it with a big smile on his face, manager looked shocked beyond belief and subbed the player. As the ref in that situation I would have allowed play to continue because there had been no head injury and he was not crying.

The second was in the Watford match when a Leeds player went down as Watford were starting an attack, Watford kicked the ball out at the half way line, Leeds took the throw and kicked the ball so it went off for a thrown down at the corner flag. Nice. So why should Watford kick the ball out next time ?

Just leave it up to the ref to decide when play should be stopped for an injury.

or do what Riquelme does if he has possession - he just stops dead with the ball at his feet. He doesn't kick the ball out into touch. Once the "injured" players has been taken off or miraculously "recovers" he then continues to play. Spanish refs have let him do it a couple of times.

Time to take a lead from Rugby League

Don't stop the game (normally) & allow the player to be attended on the pitch.

I also like the way that they do sub's - ie the game doesn't stop

I would also allow players to come back on after been subbed (like Baros!) ie goes off for treatment & a play replaces him, comes back & that player (or indead a different one) leaves the pitch

James. Interesting reading this.

What were your thoughts on the kicking the ball out that led to Liverpools 3rd goal in the cup final?

I blame Liverpool in no way for the throw back, but at the time I thought the defender should have hoofed it into your half and let Liverpool kick it out.

I like that idea, assuming the opposition lays off him as the accepted etiquette instead of playing it back to the othet team after throw-in.

Anyway, I think people should cut down on it. I see no reason to put it out of play if it is in an area of the pitch where the 'injured' player wouldn't influence the game anyway.

Most pathetic example of players trying to waste time with it is no doubt Reyes against Real when he 'rolled in agony' on to the pitch. The ref should have booked him for illegally entering the pitch.

They do that in union too, letting people get attention whilst the game goes on. Makes for some entertaining rugby, especially when we rucks start to head in the way of the physio!! :D

You should have booked him.

The manager agreed to sub him instead.

I'm suffering from a touch of the Wengers on the incident - I can't picture it...

Happens to us all that does.

Like I said. I dont blame Liverpool in any way, and I am certainly not suggesting Cisse went down easily, but it turned the game with seconds to go. I suppose my question is, did the defender do the right thing or should he have hoofed it into your half and let you kick it out?

If he had, do you think the Liverpool defenders would have kicked it out?

I agree that there is just too much of it happening atm. It should only be done for head injuries.

If the West Ham defender had half a brain he would have shielded the passback out for a goal kick. He's a thick c*nt therefore a winners medal would be wasted on him anyway, justice was done.

Didnt Cisse put him under pressure to make sure he did not do that? Ball was bouncing a bit as well.

Besides that, answer the questions will ya. ;)

This thread has taken a stance on the subject so stop avoiding the question you biased gits. :bleh:

I agree with you Murph. Scaloni is the one at fault. As soon as Cisse pulled up he (scaloni) had loads of time and options and yet he chose to kick it out where he did.........thick clunt. So of course as soon as we gave em the ball back it was game on again......its not our fault it happened to be so high up the pitch.

edit : I'd also like to point out that I would have grievance if it had been the other way round.........then again Finnan wouldn't be that fecking daft.

Scaloni tried to be clever by wasting a bit of time knowing full well West Ham get the ball back from us anyway, only it failed miserably.

Your looking at this from the point of view of defending Liverpool. My questions are topic related.

I'm looking at it from a normal point of view. Would he of put it out if West Ham were 3-2 down? Would he b******s. He tried to be clever and f***ed it up.

Another reason to hate Di Canio. All became a 'done thing' after he got lots of plaudits for catching the ball in front of the open goal when the 'keeper was down injured.

I'm a strong proponent of NOT kicking the ball out of play for an 'injured' oppisition player. They are rarely ever injured, and only go down to ruin the rhythm of the team in possession.

Rafa should instruct our players to never kick the ball out when we are on the attack and an opposing player just happens to go down injured. Let his teammates win back the ball and kick it out themselves.

Ok. I give up. James, it seems your not alone in your wenger mode. ;)

I'm not ducking it honestly. Scaloni could have let the ball go out harmlessly, even a West Ham fan mate of mine acknowledged that. As for Cisse closing him down, do me a favour will yer he's a lazy clunt on two legs at the best of times and he only had one at that point.

Scaloni had every opportunity to deal with that situation harmlessly and he fecked it up.

Just leave it up to the ref to decide when play should be stopped for an injury.

I agree.

Putting the ball out when an opposition player goes down - like just before Gerrard's legendary FA Cup equalizer - is all very admirable, but it doesn't give a team the right to complain if/when the other side doesn't return the compliment.
