Question re suround sound/home cinema

A quick, probably stupid, question re home cinema for which I'd be extremely grateful for help

 

I'm considering buying a Samsung home cinema system which has four tall speakers on pedestals, two beside the tv and two behind the sofa.

 

My question is, does it matter if the speakers behind the sofa are right beside the sofa/viewer or should they be back further with the sofa/viewer in the centre of the room?
