Hull to Devon

Our lass wants to vist her friend in devon next weekend, while shes been made redundant she may as well use the time off. Thing is, train is £112.50 and national express is £70. she doesn't mind taking the NE but it's a 9 and a half hour trip. She wouldn't be too confident driving herself all the way so what i'm asking is....

 

Whats the best value for money, does anyone know a cheaper way to ride the trains? Any better ideas?
