Ferry passengers stranded after bomb find

16 May 2006 12:16

Up to 250 ferry passengers and crew, travelling from Dublin and Belfast, are stranded in the River Mersey, following the discovery of a 500kg bomb.

The Mersey Viking and Dublin Viking were ordered to wait further up the river when they arrived this morning.

The explosive, thought to be from World War II, was discovered by the Royal Navy at 12 Quays dock in Birkenhead.

Navy teams are moving the device from the Mersey out to sea before the two Norfolk Line ferries will be allowed to dock.

The Mersey Viking has 64 passengers and 55 crew on board, while the Dublin Viking has 81 passengers and 46 crew.
