Surely they must be ranked as the most complete Centre Midfielder Machine around, one that has passing variety the other can do surging runs and shoot from long distances and the other that breaks up counter attacks and can run for two men.

They should have their own comic or cartoon.

As going forward we should not let them rest on their laurels and if Didi goes then who would be willing to bide their time on the bench and at the same time push for that starting place.

Marcos Senna- Reason: plays that holding role and was very effective against Everton and Arsenal in the CL.

Joey Barton: - Reason: A proven Prem player with a contractural dispute at the mo.

Michael Carrick and Gary O'neil: Are proven Prem players and would like CL football.

OR do we have a youth player coming through soon to fit that role?

that Reo Coker looks a real prospect and very mature for a 21 year old. Agree though that we could do with 1 player for central midfield its almost come to the point where Stevie wont be classed as a central midfield player as hes so effective wide right where he can drift or in a free role behind the strikers.

What happened to that Argentinian midfielder we were linked with? Any truth in that? Plus we've been linked with another central midfielder from La Liga (can't remember his name) so it looks like Rafa is looking at strengthening here too.

Allow me to make a case for Nigel Reo-Coker.

Joey Barton: cool, calm head. Just what we need.

Seriously though I think O'Neil could be a good bet in the summer. he can play right or central and still has room for improvement in his game.

He's looking very good. But would probably take a big fee to get him away from WHU, probably too much for a back up. But at that age maybe worth it.

Should have added, don't be too surprised if Ferguscum comes in for him as Fergie's centre mid is mush!!

I quite like Poulsen but he's too good to be a back up.

Anyway we should keep Didi as long as possible even if it just to bring him on in finals, always manages to steady us- pure class he is.

I don't think many players mentioned on here would be happy coming in knowing they'll be fourth choice.

But 4th choice when 3 are guaranteed to start? Whoever it is would get plenty of games.

what guarantee is this?

we played 4-4-2 alot more than 4-5-1 last season.

Rotation, Calamity

yeah i get it. but with a new right winger coming in Stevie will be playing centre mid again alot more.

So theres Gerrard, Alonso, Sissoko competing for 2/3 places, most of the time competing for 2.

I doubt Barton/Reo-Coker would be happy with 4th choice and not even getting on the bench for some games.

I'd keep Hamann on and if not do what Rafa is seemingly doing by looking at Somoza or someone that wouldn't cost as much but can still do a job when called upon.

Allow me to make a case for Salif Diao. The guys got everything, hard in the tackle, great distribution, pace, power, eye for goal, and nothing short of 100% committment to the shirt. When he's not breaking up attacks he's bursting forward on surging attacking runs and loading the bullets for the likes of Diouf and Baros.

Gerrard on the right is good, its like Zidane or Ronaldinho on the left...

Its not taking credit away from them making them play on the side, when they are known as central attacking midfielders, it allows them to go upfront without having to worry too much about defending

Kev Nolan for me, by some way actually. Don't see it happening though.

Salif Diao is, since i last posted, sitting opposite me in the airport and I assume on the same flight to Paris. If that's not a sign that he is the mythical possible future replacement for hamann, i don't know what is.

p.s. His girlfriend is rather attractive, but I daren't stare too long incase he gets up and crushes me like a bug, like a BUG!
