What are the circumstances where a player can do this?

If they've been at a club for a certain amount of time, not exactly sure what, but I think it's over five years, and I think on their second or more contract. I think the option is there for them now, under the rules, to buy out up to the last two years of a contract. Someone else will know exactly. I also think that Henry and Shevachenko may be in the same boat.

Gallas has given Chelsea a two week deadline to agree a fee with a club of his choice otherwise he pays out his contract and walks for a 'free'.

I think it's hilarious.

Unfortunately, the chavs don't have to sell if they don't want to, no matter how unhappy the player is. They can take a hit on the wages and small fee they would get and make him sweat it out in the stiff as an example to other players.

Unfortunately this looks like what they will do, hopefully it will serve as an example to other players joining the chavs that the big money comes at a price.

Chelsea play hardball over Gallas

It is also this kind of behavious by the chavs that makes me highly sceptical about us signing SWP, no matter how much he tells Gerrard he is desperate to join us.

It's part of the E.U employment laws, I'm not an expert on the details but any club could (in theory) buy out the last year of a players contract if that player is over the age of 24. I think it's based on how much wages the players get, if they earned £1m a year then the buying club (or the player) would have to pay a multiple of that to be a free agent.

In Spain, they have a system whereby EVERY player has a buy - out clause in their contract. Say the clause is for £10m, then any interested club that deposited £10m in the Spanish F.A.'s bank would have the opportunity to speak to the player. That was the way in which Perez forced Figo into joining him and because Madrid had lodged his buy out (I think it was about £38m) with the F.A. there was F*** all Barca could do about it.

Indeed, they won't "sell' him but apparently under a FIFA rule he can pay Chelsea the rest of his contracted wages and become a free agent of his own accord.

Erm, did you read this thread before posting?

So Gerrard, Carragher, Rise & Hypiia are in the same boat for us. Funny there's not more of this happens!

Not related to Gallas but I always suspected that Beckham chipped in towards his transfer to Madrid.

Doubtful. Given the amount of income he generates off the pitch, they were always going to make money off him.

Don't think so. Gerrard and Carra re-signed last summer. I think there can't be more than 2 years left on the contract.

hope chelsea screw him over a bit. The bad PR will surely stop them signing any more players of potential. Why would you go there? As a competing club, you would just have to mention the examples of PArker, Johnson, Bridge, SWP, Gallas etc.
