Alonso's fitness fight

Xabi Alonso's chances of featuring in Saturday's FA Cup final appear to be receding despite the Spanish midfielder's anguished acceptance that missing the game against West Ham would be the most painful experience of his career.

The 24-year-old landed awkwardly against Portsmouth on Sunday straining ligaments in his right ankle and has yet to resume training. Adding to his concern is his desire to be fit to represent Spain at the World Cup. Rafael Benítez said: "I'll have a clearer idea today but it all depends on what the doctor says."

Pity, as he brings some much needed coolness and composure to the big games...

Pardew has mentioned that his tactics will be dependent on alonso's availabilty which might just be counteracting perceived mind games, so maybe rafa's just counteracting the counteraction.

I bloody hope that he is fit to play. We are already missing our 2 best match winners, can't afford to lose the brains too.

Yep, but his daughter hadn't :(

Nasty, she's very young to be getting them isn't she. At least she's getting them out of the way now.

Mind you don't get them an all ;)

Alonso still doubtful for CardiffMay 12 2006

By Ian Doyle, Daily Post

XABI ALONSO'S hopes of avoiding more Cardiff heartache remain in the balance.

The Spaniard's chances of being included in tomorrow's FA Cup final against West Ham United improved yesterday.

Alonso was able to join in parts of training for the first time after suffering strained ankle ligaments during the 3-1 win at Portsmouth on Sunday.

Rafael Benitez has said he will not gamble on the 24-year-old if he fails to prove he has fully recovered from the injury.

And that leaves Alonso facing a race against time to prove his fitness and prevent missing out on a second domestic cup final with Liverpool, having sat out the Carling Cup final defeat to Chelsea at the Millennium last season with a broken ankle.
