The word 'mardy'

I may be completely wrong (v.unlikely based on historical performance), but when I was a kid, the word 'mardy' meant scared. Not being in a bad mood or contrary, as most seem to have it now.

 

Could people, perhaps especially those from South Lancs, confirm this??
