Fury as hit-run menace escapes jail

THE family of a boy left paralysed by a hit-and-run driver reacted with disgust after the menace escaped jail following yet another smash.

Daniel Hennessy was just six when he was knocked down and left for dead by Sajid Hussain in Rochdale four years ago.

Hussain was given an 18-month custodial sentence for dangerous driving after he went on to knock down a lollipop lady in a second hit-and-run.

He was disqualified from driving after the two collisions but, as reported in yesterday's Manchester Evening News, he has been hauled before the courts again after he ran from the scene of a third smash in April this year.

'Joke'

But when he appeared at court on Friday he was only given a four-month suspended sentence, which means he will not have to go to jail unless he breaks the law again in the next 12 months.

Daniel Hennessy's mum, Deborah, said: "It's a joke. The system is a joke. He's done it again. I just want to get on with my own life now and forget about him. He's just not worth it."

Daniel's grandfather Chris O'Connor said: "Hussain has got away with it again and it's unbelievable. We think the result of this new court case is a load of garbage.

Banned

"Hussain shouldn't be on the road after what he did to Daniel."

Hussain was just 16 when he left Daniel paralysed in a hit-and-run smash in Rochdale. He was convicted of failing to stop and driving without insurance or a licence.

He was then sentenced to 18 months custody for dangerous driving in September 2003 after he knocked down lollipop lady Audrey Chadwick in another Rochdale street.

She was left with a broken jaw, cheekbone, forearm and pelvis. Hussain was still banned from driving when he was spotted by police as he drove a VW Golf in Rochdale on April 11 this year.

He sped off, mounted the pavement and crashed into a stationary car and a street sign in John Street. He then jumped out of the car and ran off.

Guilty

When he appeared at Rochdale Magistrates' Court on Friday, he pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, failing to stop after an accident and driving without insurance.

As well as a four-month suspended sentence, he was disqualified from driving for another three years and ordered to do an 18-month community service order.

A spokesman for the campaign group Brake said: "It's shocking. Something needs to be done to deter these drivers."
