Middlesbrough's Franck Queudrue has revealed that he is considering playing for England, after talking with new coach Steve McClaren.

The Boro boss, who takes charge at Soho Square in August, is a big fan of Queudrue - having brought him to England in 2001.

Queudrue was snapped up by McClaren on loan after a brief trial, and he soon made his move permanent.

The French full back is now one of the most popular players at The Riverside and is regarded as one of the best left backs in The Premiership.

France have so far, to the player's annoyance, ignored his efforts in England and now he is considering switching his allegiance.

"I will surprise you, I am in England for five years now and I have never had any French team call," he revealed.

"I am 'eligible' to play for the England national team. McClaren has already talked to me about his project, but I need to think about it."

Queudrue admits a move back to France remains an option and that could then bolster his Les Bleus ambitions - should he decide against playing for England.

"In a way I could be lucky to play for a great team, but I would feel a little ashamed as France remains my country," he told But!

"But I know here people respect me a lot. In France, people almost don't know me.

"I hope it would change above all if I come back to Ligue 1 soon."

This 5 year rule thing, surely this is for an EU passport that allows non-EU workers to now work anywhere in the EU without a permit. Please tell me himself and McLaren havent messed this one up ?

I'd change my allegiance to the Third Reich if Silvestre was picked in front of me...

I vant you to play at zer front - ZER RUSSIAN FRONT!

wouldn't you be pissed off if Evra/Silvestre was more likely to play LB than you

If he can't get ahead of them for France, how in the name of buggery is he expecting to get a game ahead of Ashley Cole?

If you live in England for five years you qualify as a British citizen. Carlo Cudicini could be called up by England too. I think Di Canio qualifies as well.

Cudicini been talked about fairly often in terms of doing that, but always turned the idea down.

I'd salute and offer to go in the knack as long as Silvestre wasn't my commanding officer...

Forgive my ignorance, but is there a precedent of this ? Did John Barnes qualify this way or was one of his parents English ?

I think Barnes qualified through the residency rule. Of course there are a few examples in other countries - Pernia and Senna have both declared for Spain recently through the same means.

Basically if you hold a passport for a particular country and haven't played for any other international team in a competitive international then you can declare for that country I believe. Anyone remember Roy Wegerle playing for the USA because his wife was American?

Didn't Japan have some Brazilian fella playing for them at the last world cup through the same rule? Or am I imagining things again?

nah, you're right. was brasilian alex who played for japan, and i think japan has a couple more brasilian born players playing for them now.

likewise deco plays for portugal and emanuel olisadebe plays for poland.

Which Alex? The one at Fenerbache?

To be fair, Japan's Alex Santos starting living in Japan since secondary school so he's less 'plastic' than some Scottish/Irish players!

It happens everytime, without fail...I start humming Mustang Sally and thinking, "Top Deco or bottom Deco?"

This is silly. Being granted citizenship doesn't make you English. You get a British passport, that is all. Only those born or raised (from the age of...let's say 2-and-a-half) in England should ever be eligible to represent the national team.

Queudrue is as French as cheese and the notion of surrender, he will not and cannot be anything else, regardless of what a bloody passport says.

In that case he shouldn't have a British passport at all. He is either French or he is English - I firmly believe that he can't be both

I'm with you on this one. France is part of the EU, we are all part of one bloc, what difference does having a UK passport make? I could just as easily go and settle in France since I have an UK/EU passport.

Passports should have no bearing on nationality, especially when it comes to international football. If we allow this French bloke to play for England, we'll become the laughing stock of football, a bit like Ireland who let anyone play for their country, even if they're not remotely Irish.

Like when we let the Jamaican play for us?

Jamaica did not have a national team at the time, Barnesy had long been settled in England and only played for English clubs and had been nurtured by English football. It made perfect sense for him to represent and rap for England. Queudrue is a different case entirely.
