Greek referee Kyros Vassaras, Spanish ref Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez have been told that they cannot referee in the World Cup Finals because one or more of their assistants/group failed the fitness tests.

 

They will be replaced by Italy's Roberto Rosetti and Spain's Manuel Cantalejo.

 

Just cannot understand why a fit and able referee cannot take part in the biggest football tournament in the World because one of his colleagues (assistant) fails the fitness test. Why can't they replace the assistant with another one from that country ?

aye especially when we have the likes of Mike Riley and Rennie running amock.

 

Fitness does not always compensate for judgement and I'd rather have refs who are at the higher eichelons and familiar with the cheating shyte than just fulfill a requirement for geographical representation.

For the first time ever all three officials will be from the same country, and FIFA instructed that they have as many games as possible together in their National Leagues to get to know each other better. This is why Poll, Turner and Sharpe have been given so many games together.

 

I can understand the reasoning behind this, but not why they all get binned if one of them fails the fitness tests.

As the replacements are from Spain and Italy they should be very familiar

Or at the very least booking Hyypia or perhaps even sending him at 3-0 in the second half for scything down Kaka. We dodged that bullet - and that's why I think he didn't send Gattuso.
