Four apiece 1986 - Steve McMahon missed a penalty but struck four goals as we recorded the equal biggest ever win in the League Cup, thumping Fulham 10-0. Ian Rush and John Wark both netted braces with the other goals coming from Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol, while Rush also struck the post twice. Both managers played in this game, with Kenny Dalglish lining up against the Cottagers’ new player/manager Ray Lewington. 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged four in our 5-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, his hundredth reds game, with Steve Harkness nabbing our other goal late on. 1939 - We also entertained the Trotters, with Jack Balmer bagging a brace and Matt Busby also on target in a 3-0 friendly victory. Jonjo off 2012 - We lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Anfield, with Jonjo Shelvey somewhat harshly dismissed in the first half, and Fabio Borini having to go off injured at half-time. Steven Gerrard put us ahead straight after the break, but Rafael da Silva equalised before Robin van Persie converted a late, soft penalty to secure victory, one of his seven goals past us. Martin Kelly suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in this game. The first Irish red 1970 - Steve Heighway became the first ever red to represent the Republic of Ireland in their 2-0 friendly defeat at home to Poland, winning the first of his 33 caps less than a month after his senior reds debut. 1992 - Torben Piechnik won his first cap as a reds player, and tenth to date, as Denmark were held to a goalless draw by Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier in Vilnius. Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his twentieth cap on the same day as Norway beat the Netherlands in another qualifier in Oslo. Reds sold 1993 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper left Anfield after 73 reds games to join Newcastle United for £550,000. He made thirty appearances for the Toon before retiring from the game. 1982 – Forward Colin Russell moved on to Huddersfield Town. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. 1920 - Scottish international centre-forward Tom Miller was sold to Manchester United for £2,000, after 56 goals in 146 reds games, including appearing in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. He had been suspended for his part in the 1915 match-fixing scandal involving the reds and the Old Trafford side. Sam English nabbed a brace with Alf Hanson also on the scoresheet. 1950 - Centre-half Joe Cadden made his reds bow in our 2-1 defeat at Fulham, with Billy Liddell netting. 1957 - Winger Johnny Morrissey debuted in our 2-1 win at Stoke City, with Louis Bimpson and Tony Rowley grabbing the goals, and Geoff Twentyman putting through his own net. Mo again 2017 – Mohamed Salah scored in his third consecutive game as we won 3-2 in the League at Leicester City, just four days after being knocked out of the League Cup at the same venue. Philippe Coutinho also scored before Shinji Okazaki pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time. Jordan Henderson restored our two-goal advantage, but Jamie Vardy responded immediately with the sixth of his ten goals past us to date. Simon Mignolet then saved a Vardy spot-kick to ensure victory. Penalties galore 2014 – After a 2-2 draw, our League Cup Third Round tie with Middlesbrough at Anfield resulted in a 14-13 win on penalties, a club, competition and joint English professional record, with even keeper Simon Mignolet amongst the scorers. Midfielder Jordan Rossiter opened the scoring on his debut, with Jordan Williams making his only senior appearance. Adam Reach levelled to send the game into extra time before Suso struck his only goal in his last game for the club. However, Patrick Bamford converted a stoppage time spot kick to send the match to a shoot-out. 2015 – We beat League Two side Carlisle United 3-2 on penalties after another Third Round tie ended 1-1 after extra time. Keeper Ádám Bogdán saved three of the spot kicks on his reds bow while centre-half Martin Škrtel played his 300th reds game. Danny Ings had given us the lead before Derek Asamoah equalised before half time. Happy birthday Fred 1895 - Outside-left Fred Hopkin was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. He netted twelve times in 360 reds games after signing from Manchester United for £2,800 in May 1921, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s before re-joining former club Darlington in August 1931. On the same day, a benefit match was held for Matt McQueen at Anfield. He played 105 times for the reds between 1892 and 1899, and later became a director, before managing the side for five years in the 1920’s. An England International XI beat the reds 3-0, with Sheffield United’s Harry Hammond bagging a treble. 1931 – Welsh international centre-forward Des Palmer was born in Swansea. He signed from his hometown club in March 1959, in a £15,000 deal with right-half Roy Saunders moving in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury on his reserves bow, moving on to Johannesburg Ramblers in 1960. 2005 – Right-back Josh Davidson was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in October 2022. First goal against 1893 - Centre-forward David Henderson scored on his reds debut as we beat Small Heath 3-1, as we conceded our first ever League goal in our fourth match, netted by Caesar Jenkyns, with Jimmy Stott grabbing a brace. Willie signs on 1931 – Scottish right-back Willie Steel signed from St. Johnstone for £1,000. He failed to score in 128 reds games before being sold to Birmingham City for £5,000 in March 1935. Derby wins We have twice beaten Everton in other games on this day in history. 1989 - Ian Rush netted a brace to reach 150 League goals for the reds after John Barnes had equalised as we won 3-1 at Goodison, with ex-reds reserve Mike Newell having put the Toffees in front with one of his eight strikes against the reds. 1967 - Roger Hunt grabbed the only goal of the game at Anfield. This was our 2,500th League game. Double century 2006 - Mark González struck our 200th League goal against Tottenham Hotspur after the ball came back off the post from a failed Craig Bellamy tap-in, before Dirk Kuyt and John Arne Riise netted to complete a 3-0 victory. Not bribed 1922 – Before our 3-0 home League defeat of Burnley, keeper Elisha Scott, centre-half Walter Wadsworth and centre-forward Dick Johnson had all been offered £10 to let the visitors win. However, they reported this attempt to the Club Secretary, which was later dismissed as a hoax by the police. Dick Forshaw bagged a brace, with Harry Chambers also on target as forward Billy Lacey made his 200th League appearance for the reds. All sung out 2000 - Rigobert Song played his 38th and final reds game as we were held 1-1 by Sunderland at Anfield. Robbie Fowler played his 200th League game, with Michael Owen bagging our equaliser after Kevin Phillips had netted for the visitors. Five three times We have won 5-0 at Anfield on three separate occasions on this day in history. 1980 - Sammy Lee struck twice with Kenny Dalglish and David Fairclough also on the scoresheet as we met Third Division Swindon Town in a League Cup Third Round tie, as we also benefited from a Glen Cockerill own goal. 1972 - Phil Boersma, Alec Lindsay, Steve Heighway and Peter Cormack netted against Sheffield United to take us to the top of the First Division, with Kevin Keegan converting a penalty immediately after Tommy Smith had one saved for the second consecutive game. 1961 - Jimmy Melia grabbed a brace while Ian St. John, Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis also struck as we beat Bury in a Second Division meeting, our record ever victory over the Shakers. 1907 – Bobby Robinson bagged the only goal of our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round meeting with Bury at Anfield as we progressed to the next round. Award winners 2019 - Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were both named in the FIFA FIFPRO Men’s World 11 at The Best FIFA Football Awards in Milan, with Alisson named as The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper and Jürgen Klopp as The Best FIFA Men’s Coach, following UEFA Champions League glory in Madrid. Management moves 1998 - Steve McMahon left as Swindon Town boss by mutual consent after 201 games in charge, during which they were relegated but immediately bounced back as Second Division champions. 2010 - Paul Dalglish left as Head Coach of Tampa Bay by mutual consent, after they had lost 3-0 to Montreal which knocked them out of a play-off spot. 2011 – Dean Saunders was appointed Manager of Doncaster Rovers. However, they were relegated from the Championship in his first season in charge. He remained in charge until January 2013 when he left to take over at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Internationals on target 2001 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both netted for the French Under-17’s in their 2-1 defeat of reigning champions Brazil in the World Championships Quarter-final, in The Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago. 2013 – Harry Wilson scored for Wales Under-17’s in their 5-5 European Championships qualifying draw with Hungary in Slovenia. 2022 – Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as Egypt beat Niger 3-0 in a friendly in Alexandria. Darwin Núñez won his first cap as a reds player as Uruguay lost 1-0 to Iran in Austria, with Luis Suárez appearing for the first time since re-joining Club Nacional de Football. Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling represented England for the first time since moving to Chelsea in their 1-0 UEFA Nations League defeat in Italy and Ryan Gravenberch won his first cap since moving to Bayern München as the Netherlands Under-21’s won a friendly 2-1 in Belgium. Disappointment against the Baggies We have twice faced West Bromwich Albion in the First Division on this day in history, and have yet to win. 1911 - Jack Parkinson was on target as we lost 3-1 at Anfield. 1978 - Kenny Dalglish netted an opportunist equaliser in our 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns. He hid behind keeper Tony Godden and poked the ball home when he rolled it out. These were our first dropped points of the season, in our seventh League match. Winger Laurie Cunningham had opened the scoring for the home side, while Ray Clemence was playing his 500th reds game. Olympian reds 2000 - Brad Friedel played as the USA drew 2-2 with Japan in the Olympics Quarter-final in Adelaide, and then won the resulting penalty shoot-out 5-4 after extra time. Fame at last 2010 - Ian Callaghan, Ray Clemence and Kenny Dalglish were all inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame at Hilton Hotel, Manchester, with Kenny doing so as a Manager, having previously been enrolled as a player. Other reds game 1987 – We drew the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Steve Nicol struck our goal, but we fell to Everton at the next hurdle. On the move 2022 – Keeper David Martin re-signed for Milton Keynes Dons as a Player/Coach, his third spell with the club. He made just fifty appearances in three years at Maine Road before joining Bolton Wanderers. 1983 - Future red Peter Beardsley signed for Newcastle United from Vancouver Whitecaps for £150,000. He netted 61 in 163 games for the Toon, before moving to Anfield in July 1987. Dan the man 1989 – Forward Daniel Sturridge was born in Birmingham. He signed from Chelsea for £12m in January 2013, netting an impressive 67 times in 160 reds games before being released in June 2019. 2013 – He scored the only goal of David Moyes’ Manchester United’s League visit to Anfield in just the fourth minute. 1993 – Ex-reds left-back Jack Robinson was born in Warrington. He became the club’s then youngest ever player when he debuted at Hull City in May 2010 aged just sixteen years and 250 days. He was sold to Queens Park Rangers in August 2014, scoring twice in 39 outings before moving on to Nottingham Forest in June 2018. 2006 – Midfielder Afolami Onanuga was born. He joined the reds as an Under-11, turning pro in November 2023. The very beginning 1892 - We played our first ever game, beating reigning Midland League champions Rotherham Town 7-1 in a friendly that kicked off at Anfield at 5.30pm on a Thursday evening. 1894 - We played our first ever First Division game, drawing 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Harry Bradshaw putting the reds in front before Coombe Hall equalised for the home side. Unfortunately, we were relegated at the end of the season. Outside-left John Drummond played the first of eighteen senior reds games, with keeper Bill McCann making the first of his seventeen outings. Rams hit for six 2007 - Ryan Babel scored his first reds goal as we thumped Derby County 6-0 at Anfield to go into the international break on top of the table for the first time in five seasons. Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres each bagged a brace, with Andriy Voronin also on target. Birth of the Kop 1906 - Joe Hewitt bagged the only goal of our game against Stoke at Anfield as the Kop stand was used for the first time, in scorching temperatures, although it was not yet known by that name. After the previous season’s title success, the board had decided to demolish what was known as the Oakfield Road Embankment, or Walton Breck Road End, and replace it with a huge bank of rubble and cinders. Germany 1 Liverpool 5 2001 - All of England's goals in their sensational 5-1 win over Germany in Munich were scored by reds. Michael Owen grabbed a hat-trick, with Steven Gerrard nabbing his first international goal and Emile Heskey also on target. Dietmar Hamann was on the losing side, while Nick Barmby, Jamie Carragher and ex-red Steve McManaman all also appeared. Meanwhile, future reds forward Fernando Morientes bagged a brace as Spain beat Austria 4-0 in their qualifying encounter in Valencia. 2007 – Future red Mamadou Sakho scored in the penalty shoot-out as France Under-17’s lost 5-4 to Spain in their World Championship Finals Quarter-final after the game itself ended 1-1 in South Korea. 2000 – Future reds recruiter Mark Burchill netted for Scotland Under-21’s in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying win in Latvia. He played 468 times in eighteen seasons at Anfield, winning two League titles before joining Belfast Celtic as Player/Manager in June 1934. Crossing the park 1962 - Winger Johnny Morrissey was sold to Everton for £10,000. He had signed on as a professional in April 1957, netting six times in 37 reds games. He scored fifty goals in 314 appearances for the Blues, helping them to two League titles. Facing the Foxes 2018 – New keeper Alisson Becker was robbed while trying to play out from the back leading to Rachid Ghezzal’s consolation as we won 2-1 at Leicester City. He later had a very successful career in Brazil, helping Fluminense to claim the title three times in succession while bagging 163 goals in just 166 games. 1933 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie joined Millwall on trial, moving on permanently to Rochdale a month later. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930. Cliff Bastin scored the final goal of his four against us, with Jack Crayston also netting. 1919 - We also faced the Gunners, when Harry Chambers and Fred Pagnam scored in a 3-2 home defeat. Bert White bagged a brace, with Billy Blyth also netting for the visitors. Alou and goodbye 2003 - Alou Diarra joined Bastia on loan. He eventually left Anfield permanently to join Racing Club de Lens for £2m in June 2005, without ever playing a first-class reds game. 2016 - Diarra had his contract with Charlton Athletic terminated by mutual consent after one goal in 45 outings, signing for AS Nancy-Lorraine on the same day. Ciao Rushie 1986 - Ian Rush signed for Juventus for £3.2m, but was shortly loaned back to the reds, before finally joining the ‘Old Lady’ the following summer. He started off brightly, netting six times in ten pre-season friendlies. He struck eight times in 29 Serie A matches in his one season there, as well as a further six goals for Juventus in other competitions. He was never on the losing side once he had scored, helping the Turin outfit to qualify for the UEFA Cup after a difficult season. Berger off 2003 - Patrik Berger joined Portsmouth on a free transfer. He had netted 35 times in 196 reds games, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield in 2001, setting up Michael Owen for his second goal in Cardiff. Cashing in 1928 - We received a club record £7,500 fee from Chelsea for outside-left Alf Hanson in June 1938. He had stuck 52 times in 177 outings since arriving from Everton in November 1931, as well as three in sixteen Wartime games, and he netted nine times in 46 games for the Blues. In the World Cup 2002 - Future reds El-Hadji Diouf and Salif Diao both played for Senegal in their 1-1 World Cup draw with Christian Poulsen’s Denmark in Daegu. Diao had an eventful game – first conceding a penalty, then rounding off a fantastic team goal, his last strike while with Sedan, before finally being sent off for a rash challenge. Birth and death 1907 - Forward Malcolm McVean died in Bonhill, Dumbartonshire. He had scored our first ever League goal, and bagged 43 in total in 126 reds games, helping us to the Lancashire League title and two Second Division championships. 1900 – Scottish right-back Tom Robertson was born in Newton Mearns. He signed from Stoke for £400 and played 47 times without notching, helping us to claim our first League title in 1901 before joining Southampton in May 1902, with whom he won the Southern League in two successive years. Sami the Frenchman 1998 - Future red Sami Hyypiä played for France, wearing Marcel Desailly’s shirt, as they were a man short for their friendly encounter with HJK Helsinki, just prior to their victorious World Cup campaign. Future red Craig Bellamy and ex-red Dean Saunders both represented the right country on the same day, as Wales were thumped 4-0 in a friendly in Tunisia. 2014 - Sami was appointed Manager of Brighton & Hove Albion. He resigned just six months later after leading them to just six victories in 26 games in charge. D-Day all over again 1964 - Alf Arrowsmith netted as we drew 1-1 in a friendly encounter with German side Meidericher Spielverein at the Empire Stadium in Vancouver on our North American tour. This game was played on the twentieth anniversary of D-Day, and Ian St. John was sent off, alongside a German player. Newly in reserve 2009 – John McMahon, Steve’s brother, was appointed as our new Reserve Team Manager. He led them to third place in the League in his first campaign in charge, but he left the club in March 2011. He moved on at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, having helped us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, as well as skippering the side on many occasions. 2018 – The appointment of Philipp Jacobsen as the club’s new Medical Rehabilitation & Performance Manager was announced. 2015 - Forward Danny Ings agreed to sign from Burnley on 1st July for a fee eventually set at an initial £6.5m. He only struck four times in 25 games as he suffered two serious injuries, spending a season on loan at Southampton before making the move permanent for £18m in July 2020. 2014 – Yossi Benayoun re-signed for Israeli side Maccabi Haifa from Queens Park Rangers, where he had first risen to prominence. 1995 - Former reserves centre-back Mark Seagraves signed for Swindon Town from Bolton Wanderers for £100,000. Debutants galore 1975 - Jimmy Case made his reds bow in our 3-1 home League win over Queens Park Rangers, when John Toshack netted a brace to add to a Kevin Keegan penalty, with Gerry Francis on target for the visitors. This was our final game of the season, as we ended up in second place behind Derby County. 1965 - Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the FA Cup Final. John Sealey scored in his only reds appearance, with Geoff Strong and Alf Arrowsmith also on target as we won 3-1. Full-backs Alan Hignett and Tom Lowry and keeper Billy Molyneux also played their only senior reds games, while left-back Phil Ferns made his 28th and last appearance for the club and inside-left Gordon Wallace played for the 22nd and final time. 1947 - Winger Billy Watkinson scored on his Liverpool debut as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Aston Villa, with Willie Fagan nabbing the other. 1992 - Sami Hyypiä played his first game in the Finnish Premier League, as Myllykosken Pallo-47 won 2-0 at Jazz. 2008 - Jonjo Shelvey became Charlton Athletic’s youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 59 days. He played the full ninety minutes in their 3-0 Championship defeat at Barnsley. Ton up for Mo 2019 – Mohamed Salah played his hundredth reds game as we thumped Huddersfield Town 5-0 at Anfield, reaching a club record 69 goals in an opening century of outings. Naby Keïta scored our fastest ever Premiership goal after just fourteen seconds, with Sadio Mané and Salah each bagging a brace. 1924 – Full-back Tommy Lucas and right-half Jock McNab both reached a century of League games for the reds as we beat Notts County at Anfield, with Dick Forshaw netting the only goal of the game. Youngsters win again 2007 - We retained the FA Youth Cup, to claim it for the third time. Centre-back Robbie Threlfall, who had scored an own goal in the first leg, bagged the only goal of the game at Old Trafford, to wipe out Manchester United’s 2-1 first leg victory. We went on to secure the trophy by winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3, with keeper David Roberts saving one of United’s spot-kicks. Red endings 2008 - Peter Crouch grabbed his 42nd and final reds goal as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Birmingham City. We had fallen two goals behind to Mikael Forssell and Sebastian Larsson strikes before Crouch and then Yossi Benayoun netted to ensure we qualified for the next season’s Champions League. 1952 – Inside-forward Jack Haigh played his eleventh and last reds game as we ended the season with a 4-0 top-flight thumping at Preston North End, with defender George Whitworth appearing for the ninth and final time. Cody Gakpo soon levelled, with Joël Matip heading in a second-half winner, his eleventh and last goal for the club. 2006 - Luis García and West Ham United’s Hayden Mullins were both sent off at Upton Park, with Mullins becoming the fifteenth opposition player sent off against us that season. Both therefore had to sit out the FA Cup Final two weeks later as a result. Djibril Cissé bagged a brace either side of a Nigel Reo-Coker goal as we won 2-1. The game was preceded by a perfectly observed minute’s silence for former Hammers manager John Lyall, who died the week before. Four for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen bagged four goals, including his hundredth League goal, as we trounced West Bromwich Albion 6-0 at The Hawthorns, our record win over the Baggies. Michael’s fourth goal, our fifth, was our 700th in the Premiership. Milan Baroš added a brace. Gary’s treble 1986 - Defender Gary Gillespie scored a second-half hat-trick past David Seaman, including a penalty, as we thumped already relegated Birmingham City 5-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush opened the scoring, with Jan Mølby also on target from the spot. Future red Julian Dicks was on the losing side that day. This win kept us on course for our sixteenth League title. Mark Walters wins the title for Leeds 1992 - Mark Walters scored the decisive second goal that handed the League title to Leeds United, as we beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield despite both Nicky Tanner and Ian Rush having to be substituted inside the first half hour. Ian Rush had scored the first, his first ever goal against the Mancs. The Kop crowed “now you’re gonna believe us, you’ll never win the League”, while Ray Houghton played his 200th game for the club while Barry Venison appeared for the 158th and last time. 2002 - Walters joined Bristol Rovers from Swindon Town on a free transfer. He went on to play nearly a hundred times for the Pirates, netting fourteen times. 1941 - We also entertained United, with Cyril Done and Billy Liddell on target in a 2-1 Wartime League victory. A double for Quasi 1989 - Peter Beardsley played his first competitive game following the Hillsborough disaster, bagging a brace as England thumped Albania 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. On the same day, future red Karl-Heinz Riedle netted in West Germany’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in Feyenoord. The two players would meet in the World Cup Semi-final the following year. István Kozma won his last cap in his first spell as an Újpest player as Hungary lost a friendly 4-0 in Italy. Tommy Reid netted our goal, with Arthur Chandler bagging one of his six past us. 1998 - Rob Jones made the last of his 243 reds appearances in our 4-1 defeat at Chelsea. First FA Cup Final 1914 - We played in our first FA Cup Final, but lost to Burnley in the last one ever to be staged at Crystal Palace. King George V that day became the first reigning monarch to attend an FA Cup Final. Reaching European finals 1973 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the UEFA Cup, 2-1 at holders Tottenham Hotspur in our sixth meeting of the season. Edging towards Athens 2007 – Future red Joe Cole bagged the only goal of our Champions League Semi-final first leg defeat at Chelsea, as the Blues were unable to get past Pepe Reina a second time, despite an under-par reds performance. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition three consecutive seasons, as well as being the third round in a row in which Bolo Zenden had come up against a former employer, following ties with Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven. Dirk’s ton up 2009 – Dirk Kuyt played his hundredth League game for the reds as we won at Hull City. Xabi Alonso bagged his nineteenth and final reds goal to open the scoring just before the break, pouncing on his own rebounded free kick. Caleb Folan was sent off for the home side before Kuyt headed in. Geovanni pulled one back with Kuyt then making it 3-1. Howard’s way 1981 - Winger Howard Gayle scored his only reds goal, on his full debut, as we held Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane, with Glenn Hoddle netting one of his four goals past us for the home side. Another trophy 1931 – We won the Lancashire Senior Cup for the fourth time after beating Manchester United 4-0 at Anfield, with Dave Wright bagging a brace and Gordon Hodgson and Archie McPherson also netting. 1938 – We lost 3-1 at Old Trafford in the same competition, with goalscorer Ted Harston having to go off injured, leaving us down to ten men for more than seventy minutes. Kop farewell 1994 - Ashley Neal struck from the penalty spot in our 3-2 reserves defeat by Nottingham Forest at Anfield. This was the final reds goal scored in front of the standing Kop, two weeks after Julian Dicks’ famed spot-kick at the same end of the ground, and six days before Jeremy Goss’s historic strike. A derby win 1987 - Blues old boy Steve McMahon put us ahead against Everton at Anfield. Kevin Sheedy equalised with a free-kick past Mike Hooper, before flicking the V’s to the Kop. The Storer ends 1908 - Ex-reds keeper Harry Storer died of consumption aged just 37. He signed from Woolwich Arsenal in December 1895 for £75, taking over from the versatile Matt McQueen between our sticks. He made a total of 121 reds appearances before retiring in 1901. Signing on 1900 – Scottish right-back Tom Robertson signed from Stoke for £400. He played 47 times without notching, helping us to claim our first League title in 1901 before joining Southampton in May 1902, with whom he won the Southern League in two successive years. Happy birthday Thommo 1954 - Phil Thompson was born in Kensington, Liverpool. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. Martin’s bow 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel made his reds debut as a substitute for the injured Álvaro Arbeloa in our 2-2 home draw with Aston Villa, our fourth successive tie in the League. Yossi Benayoun gave us the lead before Villa hit back through Marlon Harewood and a Fábio Aurélio own goal in the space of three minutes. Africa’s finest 2003 - El-Hadji Diouf was named as the Glo-CAF African Footballer of the Year for the second successive season, a feat since surpassed by Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o who won the award three times in succession. That evening, he scored the opener in our 2-0 Worthington Cup Semi-final second leg win over Sheffield United at Anfield, with Michael Owen grabbing the decisive second in extra time, to take us through to Cardiff 3-2 on aggregate. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering.” 2023 – Scottish forward Frank McGarvey died from cancer. He arrived from Celtic for £300,000 in May 1979 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. He spent one season at the Estádio da Luz, bagging five goals in seventeen League outings, before returning to England to join Bradford City. Ellison’s bow 2006 - Academy youngster James Ellison made his debut for England Under-16’s, playing alongside clubmate Sean Highdale in their 2-1 defeat of Scotland to clinch the Victory Shield in Sc***horpe. 2016 – Future reds reserves keeper Vítězslav Jaroš played for the Czech Republic Under-16’s as they lost 3-2 to the Netherlands. 2019 – Isaac Mabaya represented England at the same level, winning his fifth and last cap as they drew 3-3 with Spain in Alicante. Good riddance 2010 – Reserves keeper Charles Itandje was released. Happy birthday Milan 1981 - Milan Baroš was born in Valašské Meziříčí in Czechoslovakia. He struck 27 times in 108 reds games after signing from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m in July 2001. He moved to Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005, having helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League and the League Cup. 1873 – Inside-forward Frank Becton was born in Preston. Fastest treble 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored the fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history, taking just six minutes and twelve seconds to net three times in our groups stage game at Rangers. Scott Arfield gave the home side the lead, but we romped home as 7-1 winners with Roberto Firmino netting either side of the break before Darwin Núñez scored. Reds come into the world 1867 - Right-half Rab Howell was born in Sheffield. He went on to become the only true Romany to play for England, playing 67 reds games without scoring after signing from Sheffield United for £200 in April 1898. He left for Preston North End in June 1901. 1897 - Forward Sam Bowyer was born in Northwich. He signed from Earlestown in March 1907, grabbing sixteen goals in 48 reds games before leaving for Bedminster in 1912. 1987 - Former reserves attacking midfielder Besian Idrizaj was born in Baden in Austria. He was actually a Kosovan-Albanian and was voted the best young player in the Austrian equivalent of the Championship shortly before moving to England. He signed from Linzer ASK for an initial £190,000 in August 2005 and made his first senior appearance in our friendly at Crewe Alexandra back in July 2006, netting a treble at Wrexham a year later, but failed to make the first-team squad, sadly dying aged just 22 in May 2010. Our eccentric keeper signed from Vancouver Whitecaps for £250,000 in March 1981 and played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields. Other birthdays 1948 - Larry Lloyd was born in Bristol. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. He was sold to Coventry City for £240,000 in August 1974. 1988 - Right-back and former reserves skipper Stephen Darby was born in Liverpool. He made the move to Melwood in the summer of 2006 after skippering the reds to FA Youth Cup glory earlier that year, also featuring as they retained the trophy the following year. He made six senior appearances as well as sitting on the bench on a further thirteen occasions, moving on to Bradford City in July 2012 after several loan spells away from Anfield. He retired from professional football in September 2018 after being diagnosed with motor neuron disease. 1940 - Inside-forward Willie Carlin was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in May 1958 but only made one first-team appearance for the club, a 1-1 draw at Stoke City in October 1959, and moved on to Halifax Town in August 1962, going on to make a total of over 400 League appearances for a variety of clubs. Twelve in a row 1990 - We won our twelfth successive League match, a new club record, as Derby County went down 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Ray Houghton strike and a penalty from Peter Beardsley past Peter Shilton. Ex-reds keepers in opposition 2003 - Two ex-reds custodians, David James and Tony Warner, played against each other as West Ham United drew 1-1 with Millwall in a First Division fixture at Upton Park. 2012 - David James signed for Bournemouth. He stayed until the following March, playing nineteen times for the Cherries. 2015 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux had his loan spell terminated by Swindon Town for paying a £50 fine in pennies, although he was reinstated after he apologised. Youngsters in action 2006 - Michael Collins netted for the Republic of Ireland Under-17’s, playing alongside Laurence Gaughan and Shane O'Connor as they beat Latvia 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Azerbaijan. 2012 – Brad Smith won his first cap for England Under-19’s in their 6-0 trouncing of the Faroe Islands in a European Championships qualifier in Tallinn. 2013 – Harry Wilson bagged a brace for Wales Under-17’s in their 3-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Slovenia in Slovakia. 1994 - Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason featured for Iceland Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat by Finland in a European Championships qualifier. 2016 – Rhian Brewster grabbed a treble for England Under-17’s as they thumped Croatia 5-0 in a friendly in Pula, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Mo the best 2018 - Mohamed Salah was named the PFA Player of the Year, after his first campaign with the reds that eventually yielded 44 goals in 52 games in all competitions as he helped us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. To Cardiff once more 2006 - We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford in the FA Cup Semi-final. John Arne Riise’s free-kick opened the scoring before Luis García extended our lead early in the second half with a sublime volley. Didier Drogba’s header, one of his eleven goals past us, ensured a nervous last twenty minutes, but future red Joe Cole blazed over with the Blues’ only real chance of note as we hung on to reach our thirteenth FA Cup Final. En route to gay Paree 1981 - Howard Gayle came on as a substitute for the injured Kenny Dalglish after just nine minutes and ran the Bayern München defence ragged, before later himself being substituted by Jimmy Case. We held the German champions to a 1-1 draw in the Olympic Stadium, with Ray Kennedy putting us in front with just seven minutes left before Karl-Heinz Rummenigge equalised, to make it through to our third European Cup Final in five years, on away goals after a goalless first meeting. Boss Bob Paisley had called this “our biggest test since Rome”, prior to the game. A first treble 1905 - Forward Sam Raybould became the first reds player to score a hat-trick against Manchester United as we beat them 4-0 at Anfield in a Second Division fixture. Jack Cox netted the other goal as this victory secured our promotion, with reds’ fans carrying the players on their shoulders after the final whistle in celebration. 1916 - Fred Pagnam also struck three times as we thumped United 7-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Held by the Blues 2008 – We took the lead in the first leg of our Champions League Semi-final against Chelsea shortly before half-time through Dirk Kuyt, before failing to take a number of other good chances. We suffered a sucker punch in the final seconds of time added on when John Arne Riise headed into his own net. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition in four consecutive seasons. 2010 – We also suffered European disappointment, losing 1-0 in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Semi-final at Club Atlético de Madrid, with the reds having to make the long journey to Spain by train following volcanic eruptions over Iceland causing all flights to be grounded. Baggies bouncing 1967 – West Bromwich Albion won 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to one of Jeff Astle’s seven goals past the reds as winger Peter Thompson appeared for the 200th time. 2012 – Peter Odemwingie struck the only goal of the game as the Baggies won at Anfield for the first time in exactly 45 years, under the management of ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson. Double red 1969 – We were held to a goalless draw at Coventry City with Alun Evans and City’s Maurice Setters both sent off for fighting. Under twelve thousand 1959 - We hosted our lowest post-war League crowd of only 11,976 as we beat Sc***horpe United 3-0 in the Second Division. Alan Arnell netted his 35th and final reds goal, with Billy Liddell and Fred Morris also on the scoresheet. Happy birthday to the reserves 1956 - Left-back Brian Kettle was born in Prescot. He signed for the reds in May 1973 but only made four senior appearances as his route to the first-team was blocked first by Alec Lindsay, then Joey Jones and Alan Kennedy, and he moved to Wigan Athletic in August 1980. 1983 – Former Finnish reserves striker Daniel Sjölund was born in Marieham. He never made the first team after arriving Anfield from West Ham United in November 2000 as part of the deal that took Rigobert Song in the opposite direction, moving on to Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in January 2004. 1993 - Midfielder Craig Roddan was born in Fazakerley. He joined the Academy from Wigan Athletic in 2007 but was released in the summer of 2014. 2001 – Centre-back Morgan Boyes was born in Chester. He put through his own net while making his senior debut in the 5-0 EFL Cup loss at Aston Villa in December 2019, also featuring in the FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield two months later. He moved on to Livingston on a free transfer in January 2022. An eventful friendly for Don 1925 - Scottish left-back Donald McKinlay scored and then replaced Elisha Scott in goal after he was injured at Anfield against Aberdeen. The game ended 1-1. Beating the Blues 1944 - Cyril Done netted a treble, including a penalty, as we beat Everton 4-2 in a Wartime League match at Anfield, with Stan Polk also on target. 1893 - We also beat the Blues in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final at Goodison Park, with Tom Wyllie bagging the only goal of the game in front of just 10,000 at Bootle’s ground on Hawthorne Road. Stevie again 2007 - Steven Gerrard was named in the PFA Team of the Year for the fifth of eight times, a record in the Premier League era. Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis were on target, with Dave Hickson bagging his 38th and last goal for the club. Tony for the only time 1959 - Ex-reds inside-right Tony Rowley won his only senior cap for Wales. Their 4-1 defeat by Northern Ireland in Belfast was enough to hand the Ulster side a share of the British International Championships with England that season. This cap was even more special in that Rowley was a Tranmere Rovers player at the time, then in the Third Division. Welsh Englishman 2001 - John Welsh scored for England Under-16’s as they lost 3-1 to Italy in the European Championships at Bramall Lane, with future red Alberto Aquilani on the winning side. On the same day, future red Fernando Torres scored for Spain Under-21’s in their 3-0 defeat of Romania in the European Championships Finals in Durham. Future reds Rigobert Song and Kolo Touré both played in World Cup qualifying wins on the same day. 2002 - Welsh starred for England Under-19’s as they qualified for the European Championship Finals by beating Lithuania 2-1 at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, with future red Jermaine Pennant on target and future reds Glen Johnson and Gary O’Neil also in action. Aquilani featured for his country again, playing for the Under-18’s as they beat Poland 2-0. Stan the Irish Villain 1998 - Steve Staunton won his 74th cap, and final one in his first spell as an Aston Villa player, as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to Argentina in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. Phil Babb and future red Robbie Keane also played. On the same day, Abel Xavier won his final cap as an SL Benfica player, and fifth in total, as Portugal lost 3-0 to England in a friendly at Wembley. Paul Ince and Michael Owen both featured. Meanwhile, future red Nicolas Anelka made his senior international debut in France’s goalless draw in Sweden and future red Vladimír Šmicer netted as the Czech Republic won 3-1 in Slovenia. Richard devalued 2008 – Ex-reserves defender Richard Money resigned as Manager of Walsall having failed to receive assurances over transfer funds. A record for Jameo 2007 - Ex-red David James broke the all-time Premiership clean sheets record with his 143rd shut-out as Portsmouth held Aston Villa to a goalless draw in the Midlands. Other reds games 2001 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield with Emile Heskey opening the scoring. Willem Korsten equalised before the break with Patrik Berger putting us ahead from the spot with Robbie Fowler also on the scoresheet. 1992 – Ian Rush netted our equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest after Teddy Sheringham had scored the first of his seven goals past us. 1978 – We bet Norwich City 3-0 in L4. John Ryan put through his own net with David Fairclough on target either side of half time. Signing on 1978 - Reserves defender Alan Harper signed as a professional. However, he never played a senior reds game, later enjoying greater success across the park. 2021 – Centre-half Tom Clayton signed a new contract. He can also play in midfield, regularly turning out for the Under-23’s. Also in international action 1944 – Matt Busby captained Scotland as they drew 2-2 with England in a Wartime International at Hampden Park. 2002 – Conal Platt played for the Republic of Ireland Under-18’s as they beat Portugal 1-0 in Viseu to clinch the tournament in which they were competing. 2004 - John Paul 'Joxer' Kelly featured as the Irish Under-17’s lost a friendly 1-0 in Turkey. 2008 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-19’s as they beat Estonia 1-0 in Tallinn. 2019 – Bobby Duncan and Curtis Jones both featured as England Under-18’s lost 1-0 to the Czech Republic in a friendly in Dubai. -
The greatest performance ever 1988 - We trounced Nottingham Forest 5-0, just four days after we had beaten them 2-1 in the FA Cup Semi-final. It was a stunning display that the legendary Tom Finney described as “the greatest performance ever”. John Aldridge bagged a brace, to add to goals from Ray Houghton, Gary Gillespie and Peter Beardsley. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 400th reds game. 1929 - We also netted five, winning 5-2 at Derby County, with Henry Race and John Clark both bagging braces, and Gordon Hodgson also on the scoresheet. Harry Bedford struck two of his nine goals against the reds. Heading towards Istanbul 2005 - Xabi Alonso returned after his broken ankle suffered on New Year’s Day, with Djibril Cissé making an even more amazing comeback from injury, to help the reds secure a battling goalless draw at Juventus to reach the Semi-final of the Champions League, our first last-four appearance in Europe’s premier club competition for two decades. Semi-final draws 1985 - Manchester United held us to a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park after extra time, before beating us in the replay, and then subsequently winning the FA Cup Final itself. Ronnie Whelan and substitute Paul Walsh grabbed our late equalisers at the end of normal and extra time, respectively after Bryan Robson, with one of his seven goals past us, and Frank Stapleton had twice put the Red Devils ahead. 1963 - We also faced United, with Ian St. John bagging the only goal of this top-flight meeting at Anfield. This was the first game Gerry Byrne had missed since October 1960, in which time he had made 117 consecutive appearances. 1992 - We won the first ever FA Cup Semi-final to be decided on penalties. After a goalless two hours of the replay at Villa Park, we beat Portsmouth 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out, with John Barnes and Ian Rush converting before Dean Saunders netted the decisive kick, with Pompey missing the target with three of their spot-kicks. Ronnie Moran took charge of the reds following Graeme Souness’s recent triple heart bypass surgery. Jordan off 2014 - We beat Manchester City 3-2 at Anfield, our tenth straight League win, with Raheem Sterling and Martin Škrtel putting us two goals ahead inside the first half hour. However, the visitors drew level through David Silva and a Glen Johnson own goal after the break before Philippe Coutinho pounced on a Vincent Kompany error to secure the victory and our place at the top of the table. This was our 93rd League goal of the season, a new club record in the top flight. Unfortunately, Jordan Henderson was sent off late on and we then proceeded to finish second in the table. 1901 – We beat City 3-1 in another top-flight encounter at Anfield, with Tommy Robertson bagging a brace in his hundredth League outing for the reds, with Jack Cox also on target. However, Steven Gerrard did score our hundredth goal of the season, before being sent off, and we went on to clinch the crucial third spot at the end of the season. Rio Ferdinand and Lee Bowyer had put the visitors two goals in front. 1991 - Lee Chapman scored three of his six goals against the reds as we won 5-4 under Ronnie Moran at Leeds United, having led 4-0 after half an hour. Claudio Reyna was sent off in the dying seconds in front of a record Stadium of Light attendance of 48,355. Derby joy 2008 - We bounced back from defeat at Old Trafford by beating Everton 1-0 at Anfield. Pepe Reina kept his 54th clean sheet in his hundredth League game, a new club record to beat Ray Clemence on 53. Fernando Torres scored our hundredth goal of the season early on, notching in his sixth consecutive League home game, equalling a club record, while the club reached 3,000 League points. 1940 - Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbed a brace with Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet as we won a Wartime League match 3-1 at Everton. Reds being born 1892 – A meeting was held in the Neptune Hotel in Clayton Square, Liverpool to draw up club rules for the nascent reds. The first rule was “that the club be called Liverpool Football Club and shall play under the Rules of the Football Association”. Thumping Spurs 2014 – We trounced Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at Anfield to return to the top of the League for the first time since Christmas. Younes Kaboul turned in a Glen Johnson cross early on before Luis Suárez doubled our lead. Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson both struck after the break. 1964 – We beat Spurs 3-1 at Anfield, with Ian St. John bagging a brace before the interval, with Alf Arrowsmith on target after the break. Eventually successful semis We have twice played Semi-finals on this day over the years. 1974 - We drew 0-0 with Leicester City in the FA Cup at Old Trafford, before winning the replay 3-1 at Villa Park four days later. Vlad on fire 2002 - Vladimír Šmicer’s second goal in consecutive reds games and a Michael Owen tap-in from a Šmicer cross gave us a 2-0 home League win over Charlton Athletic, moving us back to the top of the table. Vlad became our fastest ever goalscoring substitute, having netted just four minutes after entering the fray as an early replacement for the injured Emile Heskey. Beaten by the R’s 1991 - We lost at home to Queens Park Rangers for the only time to date, under the temporary charge of Ronnie Moran, with Les Ferdinand heading in his seventh goal in as many games to put them in front, the first of his six goals past us. Roy Wegerle pounced on a slack Steve Staunton back-pass to double their half-time lead. Jan Mølby converted a spot-kick before Peter Beardsley struck a post, but substitute Clive Wilson scored with his first touch to make the final score 3-1. A memorable day for Mr Walker 1898 - We paid Hearts £350 in total for Scottish international winger Tom Robertson and inside-right Johnny Walker, who had both just helped their side to claim the League title, both then repeating the feat south of the border.
