Arrivederci JAR 2008 - John Arne Riise was sold to Roma for £4m after 348 reds appearances and 31 goals since his arrival for the same fee from AS Monaco in June 2001. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1937 – Forward Ted Harston signed from Mansfield Town for £300,000 after an amazing 81 goals in seventy Third Division North outings. He struck on his reds bow as we were thumped 6-1 at Chelsea that August, as well as bagging a brace in his second game. However, he only played a further three games, returning to amateur football with Shorts in the Kent League in August 1939 after suffering a broken leg that ended his professional career. Happy McBirthday 1971 - Jason McAteer was born in Birkenhead. After playing against the reds in the 1995 Coca Cola Cup Final, he moved to Anfield from Bolton Wanderers for £4.5m that September. He was a regular under Roy Evans, but was soon shown the door by Gérard Houllier, who sold him to Blackburn Rovers for £4m in January 1999 after six goals in 139 reds games. 1914 – Forward Ron Jones was born in Mold. He signed from Wrexham in March 1938, scoring once in five outings before the war intervened. He returned to Wrexham in peacetime. Thommo departs 2004 - Phil Thompson stepped down as Assistant Manager. He had been in this role for five years after Gérard Houllier hired him early on in his reign. Thommo stepped into the breach for much of the 2001/02 season while Houllier was recovering from heart surgery, helping us to reach the Quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League and finish second in the League. 1932 – Centre-forward Jimmy Smith left the reds to move into amateur football with Tunbridge Wells Rangers. He still holds the British seasonal scoring record, netting 66 for Ayr United in 1927/28. He signed for the reds from Ayr for £5,500 in September 1929, going on to bag 38 goals in 62 reds games including two on his debut against Manchester United. Razor on target in New York 1994 - Ex-red Ray Houghton bagged the only goal of the game at the Giants Stadium in New York as the Republic of Ireland upset the odds to beat Italy in their opening World Cup game. Fellow ex-reds John Aldridge and Steve Staunton also played, as did future reds Phil Babb and Jason McAteer. This was the first time the Irish had beaten Italy in eight attempts. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland in their 1-1 draw with the USA in Detroit. A reds friendly 1948 - We beat Swedish side Djurgårdens IF 3-2 in a friendly in Brooklyn, New York City. Billy Liddell, Ken Brierley and Jack Balmer netted for the reds. Three amigos 2008 - With Spain already having qualified for the Quarter-finals as group winners, Fernando Torres was rested alongside many first-choice players, meaning that Xabi Alonso skippered the side to a 2-1 European Championships Finals defeat of Greece in Salzburg, with Álvaro Arbeloa and Pepe Reina also playing, while Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his final cap as an Eintracht Frankfurt player for the Greeks. Javier Mascherano featured in a goalless World Cup qualifier for Argentina in Brazil on the same day. Scottish World Cup disappointment 1982 - Three reds featured in Scotland’s 4-1 defeat by Brazil in their World Cup encounter in Seville. Graeme Souness skippered a side that also included Alan Hansen and substitute Kenny Dalglish, as well as future red John Wark. 1974 - Dalglish also played against Brazil in the World Cup when their meeting in Frankfurt ended goalless, with Lucas Leiva’s uncle Leivinha also in action. 1977 - Kenny also played for his country when they held Argentina to a 1-1 draw in a friendly in Buenos Aires. Meanwhile, future red Gini Wijnaldum and ex-reds Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres also featured in the tournament. 2010 - Milan Jovanović bagged his last goal as a Standard de Liège player, the only strike of Serbia’s group encounter with Germany in Port Elizabeth. Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard captained England as Algeria held them to a goalless draw in Cape Town, with Jamie Carragher, Glen Johnson and ex-reds Peter Crouch, Emile Heskey and David James all also featuring. 2006 - Harry Kewell came off the bench as Australia lost 2-0 to Brazil in Munich. 2005 – Future red Gabriel Paletta and ex-red Arnaud Bühler both featured in World Championships Finals group games at Under-20’s level in the Netherlands. Argentina beat Germany 1-0, with Switzerland losing 3-0 to Nigeria. 1998 - Future red Bernard Diomède played as France beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 at the Stade de France. 1986 - Future red Peter Beardsley was on target in England’s 3-0 defeat of Paraguay in Mexico City as they qualified for the Quarter-finals. On the same day, Jan Mølby was a substitute as Denmark were thumped 5-1 by Spain in Queretaro. Young international reds on target 2023 – Lewis Koumas bagged his first goal for Wales Under-19’s as they were held to a 2-2 friendly draw by Sweden in Cardiff. On the same day, ex-red Gini Wijnaldum netted for the Netherlands as they lost their UEFA Nations League 3rd Place Play-off 3-2 to Italy in Enschede, while winning his last cap as a Paris Saint-Germain player, with Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk both also featuring. Federico Chiesa scored for Italy, with his first goal since making his move from Fiorentina to Juventus permanent. Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-18’s on the same day, but they lost 2-0 to Australia Under-23’s in Salon-de-Provence. 2013 – Fabio Borini scored while winning his last cap for Italy Under-21’s as they lost 4-2 to Spain in the European Championships Final in Jerusalem, with Thiago Alcântara bagging a treble, including one from the spot as he captained the winning side in his last outing at this level, with fellow future red Alberto Moreno on the winning side. 2009 – Future red James Milner scored as England Under-21’s beat Spain 2-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Gothenburg. 2000 – Titi Camara struck as Guinea beat Zimbabwe 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Conakry. 1997 - Michael Owen was on target in a World Championship Finals group game as he made his debut for England Under-20’s in their 2-1 defeat of Ivory Coast in Malaysia. 1978 - Alan Kennedy scored in his last B international as a Newcastle United player as England B thrashed Singapore 8-0 in the National Stadium. Future reds goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan also played. 2001 - Future red Djibril Cissé bagged a treble as France Under-20’s beat Iran 5-0 in a World Championships Finals group game in Argentina. Grégory Vignal and future red Alou Diarra both also played. Meanwhile, future reds coach John Heitinga played as the Netherlands lost 3-1 to Costa Rica in the same tournament. 2003 - Cissé also played for his country in a 1-0 defeat of Colombia in the Confederations Cup in Lyon. Ex-reds on the move 2000 - Former reserves striker Paul Jewell resigned as Manager of Bradford City after two and half years at Valley Parade. He led them into the Premiership, keeping them there for a season before stepping down. He took over at Sheffield Wednesday just three days later. 2009 – Djimi Traoré joined AS Monaco from Portsmouth. He had struck once in 43 outings for les Rouge et Blanc before joining Olympique de Marseille. 2012 – Former reserves forward Steven Gillespie joined Fleetwood Town from Colchester United, after 28 strikes in 108 outings for the U’s. 2022 – Harry Kewell joined Celtic as a First-team Coach. Happy days for Gary Mac While still at Leeds United, Gary McAllister twice made memorable European Championships Finals appearances for his country on this day. 1992 - He scored in Scotland’s 3-0 defeat of the CIS in Norrköping. On the same day, future red Karl-Heinz Riedle played in Germany’s 3-1 defeat by the Netherlands in Gothenburg. 1996 - Gary Mac captained his country for the twentieth time as they beat Switzerland 1-0 at Villa Park, with future red Stéphane Henchoz on the losing side. Meanwhile, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and future reds Nick Barmby and Paul Ince all featured as England beat the Netherlands 4-1 at Wembley. Clubmate Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played. 2015 – Tiago Ilori faced future red Danny Ings in the Under-21’s Finals as Portugal beat England 1-0 in the Czech Republic. 2017 – Future red Federico Chiesa played for Italy Under-21’s as they bet Denmark 2-0 in a group stage game in Poland. 2019 – Ex-red Dominic Solanke played for England Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to France in a group game in Italy. Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, future red Arthur Melo and ex-red Philippe Coutinho all featured in Brazil’s goalless draw with Venezuela in a Copa América group game in Recife on the same day. 1980 - Ray Clemence, Terry McDermott and Phil Thompson all played in England’s 2-1 defeat of Spain in Naples, with ex-red Kevin Keegan captaining the side. First and last caps 1993 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel won his last cap as a Parma player as they were held to a goalless draw by Peru in a Copa América group game in Ecuador. 2002 – Future red Ragnar Klavan won his only cap for Estonia Under-18’s in their 1-0 friendly defeat by Armenia in Tallinn. 2005 - El-Hadji Diouf won his first cap since his permanent move to Bolton Wanderers as Senegal were held to a 2-2 draw by Togo in a World Cup qualifier in Dakar. 2013 – Future red Fabio Borini scored while winning his eighteenth and last Italy Under-21’s cap as they lost 4-2 to Spain in the European Championships Final in Jerusalem, with fellow future red Alberto Moreno on the winning side. On Song twice Rigobert Song has twice represented his country in World Cup qualifiers in Libya on this day in history. 2004 - Cameroon held them to a goalless draw in Misurata. 2000 – He helped them to a 3-0 victory in Tripoli. Champion Carra 2009 - Jamie Carragher was named the Celebrity Champion at the Community Foundation For Merseyside’s Spirit of Merseyside Awards at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Also in international action 1995 – Future reds keeper Brad Friedel played in the USA’s 4-0 defeat of Mexico in a US Cup game in Washington DC. 2021 – Andy Robertson captained Steve Clarke’s Scotland as they held England to a goalless draw in their European Championship Finals group game at Wembley, with ex-red Raheem Sterling wearing the armband for the home side for a spell. Meanwhile, ex-red Dejan Lovren played as Croatia drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic in the same group at Hampden Park and ex-red Luis Suárez featured in Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat by Argentina in a Copa América group game in Brasilia. -
Happy birthday Rafa 1960 – Former reds boss Rafael Benítez was born in Madrid. He arrived from Valencia in June 2004 and took charge of the reds on 350 occasions, winning 194 times and leading us to the European Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield as well as three other finals. He left the club “by mutual consent” in June 2010. Clinching the title 1906 – We secured our second League title despite losing 3-2 on Easter Monday at Bolton Wanderers, as nearest challengers Preston North End also lost and so could not catch the reds. We therefore became the first team to win the Second and First Division championships in consecutive seasons. Jack Parkinson bagged a brace in our defeat at Burnden Park, with Albert Shepherd striking two of his twelve goals against the reds and Marshall McEwan also scoring. A derby classic 2001 - An amazing Easter Monday game ended in a 3-2 win, our first at Goodison for eleven years. Emile Heskey opened the scoring straight after an unsuccessful Blues penalty appeal. Duncan Ferguson then pounced on a defensive mix-up to equalise with his fifth and last goal past the reds before Markus Babbel netted a classic breakaway goal. Robbie Fowler missed a penalty that would have made it 3-1, before referee Jeff Winter changed the odds by first giving Igor Bišcan a second booking, and then awarding a dubious penalty, which David Unsworth converted, the hundredth League goal we had conceded under Gérard Houllier’s sole charge. Finally, Gary McAllister won the game with a supremely dramatic 44-yard free-kick late into stoppage time. This was Gary Mac’s hundredth career League goal. The birth of the hat-trick king 1904 - Forward Gordon Hodgson was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He signed from Transvaal in November 1925 and bagged a club record seventeen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games. However, he could not claim a club medal in his time at Anfield before joining Aston Villa for £3,000 in January 1936. A new man in charge 1991 - Graeme Souness took over as Liverpool Manager. He led us to the FA Cup in his first full season, his only trophy in three years in charge. He won 65 of his 157 games as boss. Ibou again 2022 - Centre-half Ibrahima Konaté scored in his third consecutive game, nodding in the opener as we raced into a three-goal lead over Manchester City in our FA Cup Semi-final at Wembley with Sadio Mané netting a brace before the break. Jack Grealish scored one of his four goals past us straight after time, with Bernardo Silva netting in stoppage time. Pepe clean again 2006 - Pepe Reina kept his thirtieth clean sheet in his fiftieth game for the club, as Robbie Fowler grabbed the only goal of the game at Blackburn Rovers with Djibril Cissé controversially ruled inactive while in an offside position. Debuting in 4-0 home League wins 1960 - Ian Callaghan played the first of his 857 reds games in our Second Division win over Bristol Rovers, replacing the legendary Billy Liddell. Wing-half Bobby Campbell bagged his second and final reds goal, with Jimmy Melia, Alan A’Court and Roger Hunt also netting. The People named Cally as man of the match, saying he “put up a fantastic show that even old favourite Billy Liddell couldn’t have bettered”. 1898 - Romany right-half Rab Howell made his reds bow in our defeat of Aston Villa, with inside-forward Frank Becton scoring his 42nd reds goal in his 86th and final reds game, and our final fixture of the season. Inside-left Hugh Morgan struck the first of his seventeen goals for the club with Tommy Robertson and inside-right Johnny Walker also on target. 1979 - We also faced the Villains, losing 3-1 at Villa Park, with David Johnson nabbing our consolation and Phil Thompson putting through his own net, and John Deehan bagging two of his five strikes past us. We only conceded sixteen goals in the whole of that League campaign. 1974 - Our third 4-0 victory on this day came when Manchester City were beaten at Anfield. Brian Hall struck twice, with Phil Boersma and Kevin Keegan also on target. Winning on the plastic 1986 - We played our first ever game on Luton Town’s controversial new plastic pitch, with Craig Johnston bagging the only goal of the game. This was our third of seven straight League victories as we ended the season with eleven wins and one draw in our final twelve League outings to clinch our sixteenth title. Also recently 2017 – Roberto Firmino headed in the only goal of the game at West Bromwich Albion on the stroke of half time. SteG misses 2005 - Steven Gerrard missed a penalty as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur. It was game of stunning strikes, with Erik Edman giving the visitors the lead with a 35-yard effort before Luis García equalised. Spurs went in front again through a deflected Robbie Keane header, one of his five past us, but Sami Hyypiä lashed in from eighteen yards to secure a point. In and out 2002 - Jamie Redknapp signed for Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer after 41 goals in 308 reds games. He was injured for much of his time at White Hart Lane, playing just 49 times for the Lilywhites and bagging four goals, before joining his father at Southampton. 1904 – Inside-forward Fred Buck left the reds for Plymouth Argyle after one goal in thirteen outings since arriving from West Bromwich Albion in May 1903. 1903 – Amateur forward Sydney Smith signed for the reds. He struck once in just two senior games, moving on to Southport Central in the Lancashire Combination in April 1904. Other eventful Goodison derbies 1996 - Wayne Rooney was the Everton mascot before a game that ended 1-1, with Robbie Fowler netting late on after Andrei Kanchelskis had opened the scoring with one of his five goals against the reds. 1997 - Fowler and Everton’s David Unsworth were sent off towards the end of another 1-1 draw, after Duncan Ferguson had equalised Jamie Redknapp’s opener. A century in south London 2000 - Emile Heskey grabbed a brace as we reached a hundred League goals under Gérard Houllier's sole charge, beating Wimbledon 2-1 at Selhurst Park, with Martin Andresen on target for the Dons. A big day for the Bionic Carrot 1980 - David Fairclough netted as we drew our FA Cup Semi-final replay with Arsenal 1-1 after extra time at Villa Park, with Alan Sunderland equalising with a goal that TV replays proved was offside, one of his six goals past us. We eventually succumbed in a fourth game nearly three weeks later at Highfield Road. 1977 - We also faced the Gunners, when Phil Neal and Kevin Keegan netted as we won a top-flight fixture 2-0 at Anfield. Ray Clemence was making his 300th League appearance for the reds. 1983 - Fairclough played his 154th and final reds game as we lost 3-2 at Southampton, with Kenny Dalglish and Craig Johnston on the scoresheet. Nick Holmes struck a brace, with Steve Moran converting a penalty for the home side. New chairman 2010 – The club announced that Martin Broughton had been appointed as Chairman. He was brought in to find a buyer for the club from George Gillett and Tom Hicks, which he succeeded in finding in New England Sports Ventures six months later, following a series of legal battles. He left his role in November 2010 and was knighted for his services to business the following month. A poor club record 1904 - Our 3-0 First Division defeat of Bury in our final home game of the season took us to just 24 League goals at Anfield, a club record low for a season. Alf West struck his first reds goal from the spot, with Jack Cox also netting and left-half George Fleming bagging his sixth and final reds goal. 1927 - We also entertained the Shakers, when birthday boy Gordon Hodgson netted a brace in a 2-2 draw. Doing the Boro We have twice won at Ayresome Park 1-0 in the First Division on this day in history. 1949 - Jack Balmer struck the only goal of the game against Middlesbrough. 1954 - Sammy Smyth was on target. Mixed fortunes against the Geordies and Rams 1910 - We won 3-1 at Newcastle United, thanks to two goals from Arthur Goddard, including a penalty, and a Jimmy Stewart strike. Jock Rutherford netted one of his six goals against the reds. 1994 - We lost another top-flight encounter 2-0 at Anfield. Rob Lee opened the scoring before Andy Cole equalled the Geordies’ club record of 29 strikes in a season, one of his eleven strikes past us. 1921 - We were held to a 1-1 draw by Derby County at Anfield in a First Division fixture, with Harry Chambers on the scoresheet as winger Jackie Sheldon played his 147th and last reds game. 1938 - We were beaten 4-1 at the Baseball Ground, with outside-left Alf Hanson grabbing our early consolation, his 52nd and last reds strike, and fiftieth in the League. Jack Nicholas and Ronnie Dix each netted the last of their four goals past us, with Sammy Crooks and Dai Astley both scoring one of their six goals against us. On the move 2010 – Reserves keeper Péter Gulácsi joined Tranmere Rovers on loan. He played five times, returning for a second temporary spell five months later. 2013 – Ex-reds winger Sebastián Leto signed for Italian side Calcio Catania, having been released by Panathinaikos three months earlier. Tosh for the Taffs 1969 – Future red John Toshack struck his first senior goal in his second game for Wales as they lost 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in East Germany. 1975 - He also netted as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-1 in Hungary. 2010 – Future red Thiago Alcântara netted for Spain Under-19’s in their 3-2 friendly win in Turkey. Stevie honoured again 2007 - Steven Gerrard was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive season, although he eventually lost his crown to Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Jocky, Ted and Tommy for the Scots 1975 - Partick Thistle’s Alan Hansen made his Scotland Under-23’s debut as they beat Sweden 2-1 in Gothenburg. Ex-reds reserves forward Ted MacDougall, then at Norwich City, netted on his senior Scotland debut on the same day as they drew 1-1 with the Swedes in a friendly, played in the same city. Future reds Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness both also played, with Kevin Keegan also playing for his country. 1969 - Tommy Lawrence won his second cap, nearly six years after his first, in a 1-1 draw with West Germany in a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park. He went on to win three caps in total, with Alun Evans playing for England Under-23’s on the same day. First and last caps 2002 - Stephen Wright won his tenth and final England Under-21’s cap as Portugal won a friendly 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium. Peter Crouch won his first cap as an Aston Villa player in the same game, and his second of six in total while Chris Kirkland and future reds Paul Konchesky and Jermaine Pennant also played. On the same day, Pepe Reina won his last Under-21’s cap as a Barcelona player as Spain beat FR Yugoslavia 2-1 in a friendly in Ceuta, with fellow future reds Xabi Alonso and Djibril Cissé also in action at this level. 2015 - Future red Bobby Adekanye won his eighth and last Under-16’s cap for the Netherlands in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Italy. Other reds games 1966 – Geoff Strong and Ian St. John struck as we beat Stoke City 2-0 at Anfield, leaving us needing just one more point to clinch the League title. Calvin Palmer was sent off for the visitors as right-half Gordon Milne played his 200th League game for the reds. 1965 – We lost 4-0 at Chelsea on Good Friday. Bobby Tambling bagged one of his eight goals against the reds, with Marvin Hinton also on target before the break. Bert Murray netted twice in the second half. 1955 – We drew 2-2 with Leeds United in a Second Division encounter in L4. Jimmy Payne and Tony Rowley both scored. 1932 – We lost 3-1 at Birmingham City with Gordon Gunson scoring from the spot. John Bradford netted the final two of his fifteen goals past us with Tom Grosvenor also on target. Dirk signs on 2011 – Dirk Kuyt agreed a new contract until 2013. He bagged 71 goals in 285 reds games since signing from Feyenoord for £9m in August 2006, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for €1m in June 2012. A centenary celebration 1988 - We took part in the Mercantile Credit Football League Centenary Festival, but only survived one 40-minute morning match at Wembley Stadium that ended in a goalless draw with Newcastle United before the Geordies won a sudden-death penalty shoot-out 1-0 after Gary Kelly saved Steve McMahon’s spot-kick. Unfortunately, John Barnes suffered an injury in this game that ruled him out of our next League fixture. Also in international action 1989 – Future red Ronnie Rosenthal played for Israel in their 1-1 draw with Australia in a World Cup qualifier in Sydney. 1994 – Future red Brad Friedel featured for the USA as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Moldova in Florida. -
Justice for the 97 1989 - The Hillsborough Disaster occurred that tragically took the lives of 97 Liverpool supporters. R.I.P. and justice for the 97, with the truth finally revealed to the wider world for those that care to look. Happy birthdays 1947 – Former Chairman Martin Broughton was born in London. He was appointed in April 2010 to locate a buyer for the club from George Gillett and Tom Hicks, which he succeeded in finding in New England Sports Ventures in October 2010, following a series of legal battles. He left his role in the following month and was knighted for his services to business in December 2010. 1982 – Albert Riera was born in Manacor in Mallorca. He signed from R.C.D. Espanyol for an initial £5.5m on transfer deadline day in September 2008, notching five times in 56 reds games before moving to Olympiacos for an initial £3.3m fee in July 2010. Harry’s treble 1922 - We beat Cardiff City 5-1 at Anfield, our first ever meeting with the Bluebirds. Nando at the treble 2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick to pass twenty goals for the season after we had fallen behind against Middlesbrough at Anfield. We went on to win 3-2, with Jérémie Aliadière sent off for the visitors for slapping Javier Mascherano. This meant we became the first team ever to score hat-tricks in all of the League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League in the same season. Tuncay Şanlı and future red Stewart Downing netted for the visitors. Daniel again 2014 - Daniel Sturridge scored in his seventh consecutive League game as we eventually beat Swansea City 4-3 at Anfield. He put us in front inside three minutes, with Jordan Henderson extending our lead before ex-red Jonjo Shelvey scored a spectacular goal and Martin Škrtel put through his own net to level the scores. Happy birthday Sammy 1959 - Sammy Lee was born in Liverpool. He had a fine career in the reds midfield, bagging nineteen goals in 295 games, helping us to two European Cups, four League titles, four League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. He left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers, but returned to Anfield in May 2008 as Assistant Manager, staying in that role until June 2011. Lawler leaves 1975 – Full-back Chris Lawler left the reds to join Portsmouth, then managed by Ian St. John. He signed pro terms on his seventeenth birthday in October 1960, striking 61 times in 549 reds appearances as he helped us to win two League titles, an FA Cup, UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield. He later returned to the club in the 1980’s as Reserve Team Manager. Reds in Moscow 2002 - We became the first English team to beat Spartak Moskva on their own patch as we came from behind through a Michael Owen hat-trick of header, left-foot and right-foot shots handed us a 3-1 Champions League group win. Grégory Vignal suffered the rare indignity of coming on as a substitute, and then later himself being substituted. 1992 - David Burrows had to play the last six minutes of our European Cup Winners’ Cup game at the same club in goal, after Bruce Grobbelaar was sent off with the score at 2-2. We went on to lose 4-2, with Mark Wright and Steve McManaman having netted for the reds and Mark Walters hitting the post. Valeri Karpin bagged a brace, including one from the spot, with Nikolai Pisarev and Igor Lediakov also netting. In and out 1937 – Inside-left Willie Fagan signed from Preston North End for £8,000, a record deal for a teenager. He netted 57 goals in 182 reds games, helping to fire us to the League title in 1947 and the FA Cup Final three years later. He finally left Anfield in January 1952 to join Belfast Distillery. 1915 – Forward Bob McDougall left the reds to join Falkirk. He had signed from St. Cuthbert Wanderers in November 1913, netting once in eight outings. Most recently 2016 – Adam Lallana played his hundredth game for the club as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in a League encounter at Anfield. Sadio Mané and Philippe Coutinho put us two goals ahead at the break, with Gareth McAuley nabbing a late consolation for the Baggies. 2017 – We lost 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium in front of a ten Premier League record crowd of 80,827. Harry Kane and Heung-min Son scored early as we reached a thousand goals conceded in the Premier League, the latter with the first of his seven strikes against us. Mohamed Salah brought us back into the game, but Delle Alli netted on the stroke of half time to restore the home side’s two-goal lead, with Kane adding another of his nine goals past us after the break. 2022 – Ex-red Taiwo Awoniyi bagged the only goal of our League visit to Nottingham Forest. Robbie on target 2008 - Robbie Keane gave us the lead at Club Atlético de Madrid when we played at the Estadio Vicente Calderón in the group stage of the Champions League, with Simão Sabrosa netting a late equaliser to ensure we left with a share of the spoils. Rafael Benítez also rested Keane, Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso as the second half progressed. In the lead-up to the game, UEFA had originally decided that the match would have to be played in another city, due to crowd trouble at their previous game against Olympique de Marseille. Also recently 2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Russian side Rubin Kazan in our UEFA Europa League group game. We came from behind with Emre Can netting our goal before the break in what was Jürgen Klopp’s first game at Anfield as Manager. Oleg Kuzmin was sent off for the visitors. 2011 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Norwich City. Ex-Canary Craig Bellamy opened the scoring on the stroke of half time, but Grant Holt equalised after an hour. Luis Suárez had eleven shots on goal as we failed to make our domination count. Doni’s day 1979 – Former substitute keeper Alexander Doni was born in Jundiaí, São Paulo. He arrived on a free transfer from Roma in July 2011 and played four senior games, as well as sitting on the bench on another 46 occasions before joining Botafogo in his native Brazil for free. He retired from playing in August 2013 after a series of heart problems. More births and a death 2009 – Full-back Ray Lambert died. He joined the reds when he was just thirteen and went on to make 341 first-team appearances, netting just twice, including being part of the 1947 title-winning side. He also won five caps for Wales. 1938 - George Gillett Jr. was born in Racine, Wisconsin. The then owner of the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team brought fellow American Tom Hicks on board and took over the club in February 2007. He was eventually forced to sell up in October 2010. 1966 - Mark Seagraves was born in Bootle. He only made two reds appearances before joining Manchester City in September 1987. He was Reserve Team Coach at Derby County until December 2008, working with fellow ex-red Paul Jewell. 2004 – Spanish midfielder Stefan Bajčetić was born in Vigo. He arrived from Real Club Celta de Vigo for €250,000 in February 2021, debuting in our 9-0 trouncing of Bournemouth in August 2022. He struck once in nineteen senior outings in his breakthrough campaign. Merseyside rivalry on the international stage 1928 - Dixie Dean scored as England beat Elisha Scott’s Northern Ireland 2-1 at Goodison Park. He remains the most recent Everton scorer past a Liverpool goalkeeper at full international level. Future reds defenders Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both lined up alongside Dean. Sir Roger for England 1966 - Roger Hunt netted as England won 2-0 in Northern Ireland in a European Championships qualifier, in a game that also counted towards the British International Championships. 2021 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty struck for Republic of Ireland Under-16’s as they beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in a friendly in Lucan. Thousands of games 1955 - We played our 2,000th League game, winning our Second Division encounter at Bury 4-1, thanks to a brace apiece from Alan Arnell and Billy Liddell. 2006 - We deservedly lost 2-0 at Manchester United in what was our 5,000th official match, and Steven Gerrard’s 350th reds game. Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand struck the goals. 1927 – Right-half Jock McNab played his 200th League game for the reds as we lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers. Dick Edmed put us in front, but Harold Blackmore netted the first of his five goals against the reds and Ted Vizard also struck. Also in Europe 1975 - We won 3-1 at Real Sociedad in our UEFA Cup Second Round first leg encounter, with Steve Heighway, Ian Callaghan and Phil Thompson all on the scoresheet. This was an especially notable result as the Spanish outfit had been unbeaten at home in the League for the previous two years. Heading for Olympic gold 1908 - Arthur Berry was in the United Kingdom side that thumped the Netherlands 4-0 in the Semi-final of the Olympics at White City Stadium. Undefeated at The Dell 1995 - We came from behind to win 3-1 at Southampton in a Premiership encounter, with Jamie Redknapp adding to a Steve McManaman brace as centre-half Mark Wright reached a century of League outings for the reds. Pat Gallacher netted a treble, the first of his six goals against the reds, with Benny Yorston scoring the first of his five. Signing on 1893 - Forward Harry Bradshaw signed from Northwich Victoria. He struck 51 times in 138 reds games, helping us to the Second Division title on two occasions, and winning an England cap in his five years at Anfield, so becoming the first ever international red. He moved on to Southern League side Tottenham Hotspur in May 1898. 2020 – Midfielder Tom Hill signed a new contract, having been with the reds since Under-6’s level. On the same day, ex-reds right-back Nathaniel Clyne re-signed for Crystal Palace. He had turned pro with the Eagles in October 2008, netting once in 137 games before moving on to Southampton in July 2012. He returned to Selhurst Park after being released by the reds in June 2020. 2023 – Ex-reds winger Jordon Ibe signed for National League side Ebbsfleet United. He failed to score in just three outings before being released at the end of the season. Court drama again 2010 – The club won a second case in the High Court against current owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks. The sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures was finally completed the next day, after a testing week for employees and fans alike. Nine in a row 1899 - We lost 2-1 at Bury, a club record ninth consecutive top-flight defeat. Inside-right Johnny Walker scored our consolation strike. Thumping the Rams 1978 - We trounced an injury-hit Derby County 5-0 at Anfield in a First Division fixture with Ray Kennedy and Kenny Dalglish each netting twice, after David Johnson had grabbed the only goal of the first half. Suspended 1895 – Centre-forward George Allan was suspended for eight matches by the Scottish FA, four months after arriving from Leith Athletic in a £100 deal. This was due to him having also signed for St. Bernard’s at the same time as moving to Anfield! He went on to score 56 goals in 96 reds games across two spells, and also has the distinction of being the first reds player to represent Scotland. Held at Anfield 2006 - Craig Bellamy was on target with a header against his former employers as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Blackburn Rovers at home in the League, after Benni McCarthy had given the visitors a surprise early lead. 2017 – Manchester United left L4 with a point after a disappointing goalless draw. Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Our eccentric keeper signed from Vancouver Whitecaps for £250,000 in March 1981 and played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields. Other birthdays 1948 - Larry Lloyd was born in Bristol. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. He was sold to Coventry City for £240,000 in August 1974. 1988 - Right-back and former reserves skipper Stephen Darby was born in Liverpool. He made the move to Melwood in the summer of 2006 after skippering the reds to FA Youth Cup glory earlier that year, also featuring as they retained the trophy the following year. He made six senior appearances as well as sitting on the bench on a further thirteen occasions, moving on to Bradford City in July 2012 after several loan spells away from Anfield. He retired from professional football in September 2018 after being diagnosed with motor neuron disease. 1940 - Inside-forward Willie Carlin was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in May 1958 but only made one first-team appearance for the club, a 1-1 draw at Stoke City in October 1959, and moved on to Halifax Town in August 1962, going on to make a total of over 400 League appearances for a variety of clubs. Double capture 1966 – Full-back Stuart Mason and left-back Peter Wall signed from Wrexham for a combined £35,000. Mason never made the first team, while Wall failed to score in 42 first-team appearances in three and a half years at Anfield, but had greater success with his next club, Crystal Palace, whom he joined in May 1970 for £30,000. Rafa was also able to replace Dietmar Hamann with Vladimír Šmicer on the hour, in a replica of the switch made by his predecessor three years earlier that some people claimed had tipped the balance towards the German outfit. Dirk’s treble 2011 – Luis Suárez dazzled as Dirk Kuyt scored a remarkable close-distance hat-trick as we beat Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield, two days after boss Kenny Dalglish’s sixtieth birthday. Javier Hernández bagged a late consolation, the first of his three goals past us to date, with record signing Andy Carroll making his reds bow as a substitute. 1993 - Mark Hughes headed Manchester United’s first goal at Anfield in five visits, one of his nine goals past us, before Ian Rush equalised in our Premiership meeting. Brian McClair nodded in the winner from a corner. Through against Barca 2007 - Jamie Carragher played his 57th game in the European Cup to equal Phil Neal’s club record as we lost 1-0 at home to Barcelona, although we still progressed to the Champions League Quarter-finals on the away goals rule. New owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks attended their first game at Anfield in a cauldron of noise. Both John Arne Riise and Momo Sissoko rattled the woodwork, but Eiður Guðjohnsen put the visitors ahead on the night with a quarter of an hour remaining, although we held on for a famous victory. Seeing off the Geordies 2002 - After floodlight failure delayed kick-off, we put on a sparkling display to beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield, with a brace from Danny Murphy and a Dietmar Hamann strike. This was midfielder Kevin Sheedy’s fifth and last appearance prior to crossing the park to join the Toffees two months later. A rare defeat 1976 - Middlesbrough won 2-0 at Anfield, inflicting on us one of just eleven home League defeats during the whole of the 1970’s. David Hodgson made his first-class reds debut in this game. A sponsored run-out 1979 - We became the first English club to wear sponsored shirts when Hitachi was emblazoned on the red kit for the first time during a goalless draw with Bolton Wanderers at Anfield. New men in charge 1991 - David Moores became Chairman of the club. He showed patience towards the Managers he employed to lead the reds, while largely staying out of the limelight favoured by some club chairmen. New reds 1987 - Mike Marsh signed on at Anfield, joining on a free transfer from Kirkby Town. He netted six times in 101 first-team games for the reds, before moving to West Ham United in September 1993 as part of the deal that brought Julian Dicks to Anfield. He is now a First Team Coach back at Anfield. 1941 – Centre-forward Arthur Shepherd signed for the reds. He was on the Anfield books at the same time as his brothers Joseph and full-back Bill. He struck twelve times in eleven wartime games, but never appeared for the reds in peacetime. 1874 – Forward Joe Lumsden was born in Tanfield. He signed from Burton Wanderers in June 1897, scoring twice in just eight senior outings before moving on to Glossop North End in May 1898. Seeing red for City 2004 - Richard Dunne was sent off for Manchester City as they lost 2-1 at Anfield in our first home game under Rafael Benítez, with our goals coming from Milan Baroš and Steven Gerrard. This was the first time in over five years that we had triumphed in a League game after trailing at half-time, to a Nicolas Anelka strike, one of his five goals past us. The wrong kind of treble 2000 - Dietmar Hamann, Gary McAllister and Arsenal’s Patrick Vieira were all sent off as we lost 2-0 at Highbury. Hamann’s red card was later rescinded. Thierry Henry netted the first of his nine goals past us, after Lauren had opened the scoring. Macca off the mark 1991 - Steve McManaman scored his first official reds goal as we lost 2-1 at Manchester City, with Dean Saunders missing a penalty. Mark Wright was injured in this game, and subsequently missed the next 21 games. David White bagged a brace for City, the first two of his five strikes past us, a feat he repeated in the reverse fixture later that season. A striking debut 1976 - New £200,000 record signing David Johnson made his reds bow as we beat Norwich City 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Steve Heighway goal. Bob Paisley was presented with the Manager of the Year award from the previous season before the match. Into the Champions League 2001 - We thumped Haka 4-1 at Anfield to progress to the group stages of the new Champions League for the first time, 9-1 on aggregate. Robbie Fowler scored on his return to the first team after his spat with Phil Thompson, while French midfielder Bernard Diomède played his fifth and final reds game. Our other goals came from Jamie Redknapp, Emile Heskey and an own goal from ex-Manchester United player Mark Wilson. Cyril’s century 1951 – Forward Cyril Done reached a century of reds senior games in our goalless top-flight draw with Burnley at Turf Moor. 2021 – We beat Burnley 2-0 at Anfield, in front of a sell-out crowd for the first time since March 2020, due to previous COVID restrictions. Diogo Jota headed us in front, before both sies had goals ruled out for offside. Sadio Mané secured the victory after the break. On the same day, midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain became a father for the first time, a son. Meanwhile, ex-reds reserves centre-half Conor Masterson joined Cambridge United on loan from Queens Park Rangers, scoring once in 21 outings for the U’s. Kicking off 1948 - We started the season with a defeat, losing 2-1 at Aston Villa in a season when we finished twelfth in the table. Jack Balmer nabbed our consolation with Trevor Ford netting two of his seven goals against us, while Cyril Sidlow saved a Dickie Dorsett spot-kick as right-back Bill Shepherd made his reds bow. Quadruple debutants 2002 - Alou Diarra, Anthony Le Tallec, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Grégory Vignal all made their debuts for the French Under-21’s. The French beat Iceland 2-1 in a friendly held at the Stade André Pestourie in Brive-la-Gaillarde. Future red Alex Manninger won his 1st cap for Austria as a R.C.D. Espanyol player as they lost 3-2 to Stéphane Henchoz’s Switzerland in a friendly in Basel. 2007 – Future red Joe Allen scored on his debut for Wales Under-21’s as they won a friendly 4-3 in Sweden. On the same day, future reds loanee Victor Moses nabbed a brace as England Under-17’s thumped New Zealand 5-0 in a World Championship Finals group game in South Korea, with future red James Milner playing for England Under-21’s. Three for the boss 1943 - Future reds boss Don Welsh bagged a treble as we beat Everton 5-2 in a wartime friendly at Goodison Park. Billy Liddell and Jack Balmer added our others. Robbie again 2002 - Robbie Keane netted in his fourth consecutive international, winning his final cap as a Leeds United player as the Republic of Ireland won a friendly in Finland 3-0. Sami Hyypiä, Jari Litmanen and ex-red Jason McAteer all also featured, with the latter captaining the side as he won his fiftieth cap, although some counts place this as his 49th due to a disputed game against a Mexico XI in 2000. Bruno l’international 2002 - Bruno Cheyrou made his senior international debut for France, as a late substitute for Lilian Thuram in their 1-1 draw with Tunisia in Rades. Future red Djibril Cissé also featured. On the same day, Øyvind Leonhardsen won his final cap as a Tottenham Hotspur player, and 79th in total, as Norway lost 1-0 to the Netherlands in a friendly in Oslo. John Arne Riise and future red Bolo Zenden also played. Christian Poulsen won his first cap while with Schalke 04 as Denmark beat Scotland 1-0 at Hampden Park. Also in international action were Milan Baroš, Vladimír Šmicer, and future reds Paul Jones, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Fernando Morientes and Andriy Voronin. Red Olympians 2004 - Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost 1-0 to Italy in the Quarter-final at the Olympic Games in Athens. More happily, future red Javier Mascherano featured in Argentina’s 4-0 thumping of Costa Rica in Patras at the same stage of the tournament. Diouf on target 2007 - Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf struck as Senegal drew 1-1 in a friendly with Ghana at The New Den in south London. Ex-reds Djibril Cissé and Alou Diarra both featured for France in a B international defeat in Slovakia, with Nikolay Mihaylov featuring for Bulgaria Under-21’s. Strikers on the move 2019 – Daniel Sturridge signed for Trabzonspor after netting an impressive 67 times in 160 reds games since arriving from Chelsea for £12m in January 2013. He was released the following March after scoring seven times in sixteen outings. 2008 – Djibril Cissé joined Sunderland on loan from Olympique de Marseille. He bagged eleven goals in 38 games for the Mackems that season. 2001 - King Kenny’s son Paul Dalglish re-joined Wigan Athletic on loan from Norwich City. He stayed for the whole season, scoring twice in thirty appearances. 1914 – Forward Jack Parkinson moved on to Bury after 128 goals in 219 reds games. Other reds games 1999 – We lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough with Brian Deane nabbing the last of his eight goals against the reds. 1995 – Tony Yeboah netted a wonder strike, the only goal of our visit to Leeds United. 1985 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa. Gary Shaw scored for the Villains with Ian Rush equalising before the break. Future red Mark Walters netted before Jan Mølby’s late leveller. However, there was still time for Nigel Spink to save a Rush spot-kick. 1965 – We won 3-1 at Leicester City with Geoff Strong adding to a Roger Hunt brace. For Shanks 1974 – An informal dinner party in honour of the retired Bill Shankly was staged at St. George’s Hotel. The event was sponsored by the reds players and labelled ‘Thank You Boss’. The menu included Cured Kop Cod and Clear Mersey Soup, with one of the accompanying wines being from “a Shankley [sic] vintage year” of 1972, curiously a year in which he failed to lead us to silverware. Also in international action 1990 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen played for Norway Under-21’s as they beat Sweden 2-0 in a friendly in Tromsø. 1999 – Future red Igor Bišcan featured for Croatia in their 2-1 defeat of Malta in a European Championships qualifier in Zagreb.
