Ged the centurion 2000 - Gérard Houllier’s hundredth game in sole charge was a 1-0 win at Manchester United, our fiftieth against them in all competitions. Danny Murphy’s free-kick after Gary Neville handled the ball shortly before half time sent United to their hundredth League defeat under Sir Alex Ferguson, with Michael Owen striking the crossbar after the break. United’s Luke Chadwick was sent off late on for bringing down Vladimír Šmicer. More victories over the Mancs We have twice beaten Manchester United in the top flight at Anfield on this day in history. 1995 - Robbie Fowler netted both in a 2-0 win, including a superb free-kick at the Kop end, while his second took him to fifty League goals. He also later struck twice in that season’s 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. 1921 - Billy Lacey and Harry Chambers netted in our 2-1 victory as we came from behind. A goalscoring debut 1955 - Jimmy Melia scored a left-foot volley in front of the Kop on his reds bow as we thumped Nottingham Forest 5-2 in a Second Division fixture. Billy Liddell scored a second-half hat-trick, including his 150th goal for the club, with John Evans netting our opener. James Barrett netted one of his four goals past us, with Peter Small also on target for Forest. 1996 - We also beat Forest at Anfield when Stan Collymore struck a brace against his old club as we won 4-2. Robbie Fowler was also on target, with our other strike being a Des Lyttle own goal. Kevin Campbell struck the first of his four goals against the reds, with Stuart Pearce also netting. Youngest ever reds 2019 – We fielded the club’s youngest ever side, at an average age of nineteen years and 182 days as the senior players were in Qatar for the FIFA Cup World Cup, although this record was broken just two months later. Pedro Chirivella captained the reds for the first time as we lost our League Cup Quarter-final 5-0 at Aston Villa. Centre-back Morgan Boyes, left-back Tony Gallacher and winger Luis Longstaff played their only games for the club, with forward Jack Bearne, left-back James Norris and midfielders Isaac Christie-Davies, Leighton Clarkson and Tom Hill all also debuting with Under-23’s Coach Neil Critchley taking charge, as midfielder Herbie Kane made his second and last senior outing. On the same day, the club reached agreement to sign Japanese forward Takumi Minamino at the end of the season from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. Debut strikes 2014 - We beat Bournemouth 3-1 in a Capital One Cup Fifth Round tie at their Goldsands Stadium, thanks to a Raheem Sterling brace and Lazar Marković’s first reds goal, with ex-Evertonian Dan Gosling on target for the home side. 2017 – We beat Bournemouth 4-0 at the renamed Vitality Stadium, with Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren and Mohamed Salah all on target before the break. Roberto Firmino completed the scoring. 1997 - Michael Owen won his only Under-21’s cap, netting in England’s 4-2 play-off defeat of Greece at Carrow Road, with strike partner and future red Emile Heskey bagging a brace. Jamie Carragher also played. Unfortunately, the Greeks qualified for the European Championships Finals, 4-4 on the away goals rule. Most recently 2023 – We were held to a frustrating goalless draw at Anfield by Manchester United, with Diogo Dalot sent off for the visitors in stoppage time. Joy against the Baggies 1932 - Gordon Hodgson and Harold Barton scored as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Anfield. 1898 - We also entertained the Baggies, when Hugh Morgan and Johnny Walker were on the scoresheet as we drew 2-2. Signing on 1919 - David Ashworth was appointed as Manager. He had previously guided Oldham Athletic from non-League into the top flight, to whom he returned in December 1922 with the reds en route to retaining the League title he had led them to the previous season. 1953 – Left-half Geoff Twentyman signed from his hometown club Carlisle United for £10,000. He netted nineteen times in 184 reds games, moving on to Ballymena United in March 1960. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a post he held for nineteen years, helping to bring players such as Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal and Ian Rush to the club. He died aged 74 in February 2004. Red farewells 1910 - Left-half Jim Bradley played his 185th and final reds game, as goals from Jack Parkinson and Jimmy Stewart handed us a 2-0 home win over Sheffield United as keeper Sam Hardy saved a penalty from Joe Kitchen. In fact, Bradley’s last three reds games were against the two Sheffield clubs! 1988 – Norwich City won 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a goal from Andy Townsend as midfielder Nigel Spackman appeared for the 63rd and final time. 1953 - Forward Sam Raybould died. He signed from New Brighton Tower in January 1900 for £250, scoring 130 times in 226 reds games and helping us to claim two League titles before moving on to Sunderland in May 1907. Mixed fortunes on Wearside 1938 - We won 3-2 at Roker Park thanks to goals from Bill Kinghorn and Phil Taylor and wing-half Tom Bush’s only reds strike as outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys played his 200th League game for us. 1949 - Ken Brierley and Cyril Done netted as Sunderland beat us by the same score in another First Division encounter as centre-half Laurie Hughes played his hundredth reds game. Len Shackleton bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Harry Kirtley and Tommy Reynolds also on the scoresheet. Parson off the mark 1927 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson scored the first of his two reds strikes as we lost 3-1 at Tottenham Hotspur. Frank Osborne bagged the last of his four goals past us with Jack Elkes nabbing the first two of his four against the reds. Thumping the Magpies 1983 - Graeme Souness bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as we beat Notts County 5-0 at Anfield. Steve Nicol and Ian Rush were also on target, with David Hunt putting through his own net. Other reds games 1977 – Phil Neal netted the only goal of Queens Park Rangers’ visit to L4 from the spot. 1960 – We drew a Second Division fixture 2-2 at Leeds United, with Kevin Lewis and Tommy Leishman on the scoresheet. Billy Bremner bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Tommy Murray also scoring. 1904 – We beat Bristol City 3-1 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Jack Parkinson bagged a brace, with Alex Raisbeck also netting. 1892 – Blackpool left L4 having beaten the reds 2-0 in a Lancashire League match. A Fox once more 1987 - Kevin MacDonald joined his old club Leicester City on loan as he continued his comeback from a broken leg suffered in September 1986. He later returned to Anfield, but only made a further seven senior appearances before returning to Filbert Street permanently. Vlad’s Arabian night 1997 - Future red Vladimír Šmicer bagged a treble in the Czech Republic’s 6-1 thumping of the United Arab Emirates in a Confederations Cup game in Saudi Arabia. On the move 2013 – Former reserves right-winger Toni Silva signed for CSKA Sofia, having been released by Barnsley six months previously. 2020 – Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai signed for RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. from Red Bull Salzburg. He scored twenty goals in 91 games while helping Die Roten Bullen to clinch the DFB-Pokal twice. Rio on target 2023 – Future red Rio Ngumoha scored for England Under-16’s as they beat the Netherlands 4-3 in a friendly at St. George’s Park. Scots in action 1975 - Ex-reds reserves striker Ted MacDougall won his seventh and final cap for Scotland as a substitute in their 1-1 European Championships qualifying draw with Romania at Hampden Park. Future red Kenny Dalglish also played. 2003 - Robbie Foy won his only cap for Scotland Under-20’s as they won 2-1 in Portugal in a friendly. 2015 – Future red Ozan Kabak skippered Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of North Macedonia in Side. Honoured 2020 - Thiago Alcântara, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were all named in the FIFA FIFPRO Men's World 11. -
Happy birthday Vlad 1973 - Vladimír Šmicer was born in Verneřice, Děčín in Czechoslovakia. He made 184 reds appearances following his £3.75m transfer from Racing Club de Lens, scoring nineteen times, including a crucial strike in Istanbul. He signed for us on his 26th birthday, although he did not officially become a Liverpool player until 1st July 1999, and left for Girondins de Bordeaux in June 2005, having helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. 1965 - Nicky Tanner was born in Bristol. He signed from Bristol Rovers for £20,000 in August 1988 and made a total of 59 appearances for the reds under Graeme Souness, netting his only goal at Goodison Park in December 1991. Sami’s farewell 2009 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield in our final game of the season, with Xabi Alonso playing his 210th and final reds game and Sami Hyypiä making an emotional farewell after his 464th and last appearance for the club. Fernando Torres headed in the opener with his fiftieth reds goal, in just his 84th game. We extended our lead after Alan Hutton deflected in a Dirk Kuyt effort to register our 150th own goal, before ex-red Robbie Keane reduced the deficit with the most recent of his five goals past us. Yossi Benayoun rounded off the scoring before Sami made his entrance. Stepping down 2004 - Gérard Houllier stepped down as reds boss. He had been in sole charge since November 1998, leading us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield. He said, “I'd rather have stayed as manager but I leave on good terms with everybody. I may have left Liverpool, but Liverpool will not leave me.” 2023 – Australian keeper Brad Jones announced his retirement from playing. He joined the from Middlesbrough for £2.3m in August 2010, making 27 senior appearances before being released in June 2015. On the same day, ex-red Pepe Reina played his thousandth professional game as Villarreal beat Cádiz 2-0. Crushed 2015 - We were humbled 6-1 in the final game of the season at Stoke City. Mame Biram Diouf bagged a brace before Jon Walters grabbed one of his seven goals past us. Ex-red Charlie Adam and Steven N’Zonzi then put the home side five up at the break. Steven Gerrard netted his 186th and last goal in his 710th and final reds game, but ex-red Peter Crouch then added his fourth and last goal against the reds. This was our biggest defeat since April 1963. Appointments galore 2011 – A raft of appointments at the club were announced, including Frank McParland as Director of Academy and Player Development, Pep Segura as Technical Director, Stuart Webber as Director of Recruitment, and Steve Cooper as Under-16’s Coach and Academy Manager. Rodolfo Borrell stepped up from Under-18’s Coach to Reserve Team Head Coach, with Mike Marsh taking over the Under-18’s. On the same day, Lucas Leiva was presented with the Standard Chartered Liverpool FC Player of the Season for 2010-11 award. En route to title number five 1947 - Our only other first-class game on this day to date brought a 2-1 victory at Arsenal in our penultimate game of the season, taking us back to the top of the table, despite being behind with only a quarter of an hour to go. Jack Balmer headed us level before a Bob Priday cross was turned into his own net by full-back Wally Barnes. We pipped Manchester United for the title that season by one point, to claim it for the fifth time. Boss George Kay was not present at the match as he was away watching transfer targets, so captain Balmer gave the team talk and the board of directors voted on tactical changes during the match! Emlyn for the last time 1980 - Ex-red Emlyn Hughes won his 62nd and final cap for England, coming off the bench as they beat Scotland 2-0 in a British International Championships match at Hampden Park. Phil Thompson skippered an England side that also included Ray Clemence, David Johnson and Terry McDermott, while Kenny Dalglish played for the Scots. Nice one Cyril 1941 - Cyril Done netted a treble as we thumped Chester 6-1 in a Wartime League game at Sealand Road. Douglas Cooke and Billy Liddell also scored, with our other strike coming from a Cole own goal. Bob’s farewell 1974 – Scottish left-back Bob Pursell died. He twice got us into trouble, firstly when we made an illegal approach to sign him from Queen’s Park in September 1911. He was then involved in the 1915 match-fixing scandal with Manchester United. He played 113 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, moving on to Port Vale in May 1920. New York friendlies We have twice played friendlies in New York on this day in history. 1953 - We beat 1. FC Nürnberg 4-3 in the Triborough Stadium, with Kevin Baron, Mervyn Jones, Billy Liddell and Sammy Smyth all on target. 1964 - We lost 2-0 to Hamburger SV at the Yankee Stadium. This was our first defeat in 36 games played over five visits to North America since the war. Most recently 2017 – Forward Rhian Brewster played his first reds game as we beat Sydney 3-0 in a post-season friendly down under, with ex-reds Daniel Agger, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Steve McManaman all also in action. Daniel Sturridge, Alberto Moreno and Roberto Firmino were all on target in the first half. Friendlies in Scandinavia We have played three matches in Scandinavia on this day in history, scoring a total of twelve goals, but conceding eleven. 1914 - Billy Lacey struck twice as we drew 3-3 with a København Select XI in Denmark, with Tom Miller also scoring. 1932 – We beat an Odense Select side 3-0 on our Danish tour. Edmund Hancock struck twice, with Gordon Gunson also on target. 1939 - We lost 5-4 to a Swedish Combination side, with our goals coming from Harman van den Berg, Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer and Phil Taylor. 1951 - Cyril Done bagged a brace as we beat a Göteborg Select team 5-3, while Kevin Baron, Billy Liddell and Jimmy Payne also got on the scoresheet. This was the third consecutive game on this Swedish tour that Done had scored in. Double debutants 2001 - Future reds Chris Kirkland and Jermaine Pennant both made their debuts for England Under-21’s, with Stephen Wright also appearing in their 3-0 friendly defeat of Mexico at Filbert Street. This was Kirkland’s only cap as a Coventry City player. Reds on target at Wembley for England 2010 - Glen Johnson grabbed his first senior international goal, with ex-red Peter Crouch also netting as England beat Mexico 3-1 in a friendly. Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and future red James Milner all also featured. On the same day, Maxi Rodríguez won his first cap as a reds player, netting twice as Argentina thumped Canada 5-0 in a friendly in Buenos Aires, with Javier Mascherano skippering the side. Meanwhile Brad Jones won his last cap while with Middlesbrough as Australia beat New Zealand 2-1 in a friendly in Melbourne. 1975 - Future red David Johnson scored as England trounced Scotland 5-1 in the British International Championships. Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, future red Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Ted MacDougall all also played. 1978 - Phil Neal netted from the spot as England thumped Hungary 4-1 in a friendly. Emlyn Hughes captained the side, with ex-red Kevin Keegan also playing. Steve Heighway and future red Mark Lawrenson played for the Republic of Ireland on the same day as they drew their European Championships qualifier in Denmark 3-3. Double Dutch 2008 – Ryan Babel bagged his final international goal as a reds player with Dirk Kuyt also on target as the Netherlands beat Andriy Voronin’s Ukraine 3-0 in a friendly in Feyenoord, with future reds coach John Heitinga also playing. Meanwhile, Krisztián Németh struck the only goal as Hungary Under-19’s faced Portugal in a European Championships qualifier in Székesfehérvár, with keeper Péter Gulácsi also featuring. Damien Plessis and future reds Robbie Keane and Sotirios Kyrgiakos also played for their countries that day. 2013 – Future red Gini Wijnaldum scored for the Dutch Under-21’s as they beat Australia Under-20’s 3-1 in a friendly in Emmen. Signing on 2016 – Keeper Loris Karius signed from 1. FSV Mainz 05 for £4.7m, officially becoming a red on 1st July, making 49 senior appearances for the reds, including our UEFA Champions League Final defeat in Kyiv. He signed for Newcastle United in September 2022 after his contract expired. On the same day, former reds Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was appointed permanent Head Coach of Valencia, although he was sacked just four months later. 1912 – Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf signed from Newcastle United for £150. He netted 28 times in 63 reds games, playing in every position on the park. 2006 - Ex-reds left-back Grégory Vignal signed for Racing Club de Lens, having been released by Portsmouth. He made 22 League appearances before moving back to England to join Birmingham City. 1948 – Right-half Roy Saunders signed on a free transfer from Hull City. He netted once in 146 reds appearances before joining Swansea Town in March 1959 in part-exchange for forward Des Palmer, who never featured for our first team. He was the father of 1990’s reds striker Dean and died in January 2009. 2012 – Reserves forward David Amoo signed for Preston North End, netting once in 24 games before joining Tranmere Rovers in January 2013. On the same day, left-back Fábio Aurélio joined Grêmio back in his native Brazil, having been released for the second time. He had arrived at Anfield on a Bosman free transfer in July 2006, netting four goals in 134 games, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield in his very first senior appearance. 2017 - Amoo signed for Cambridge United having been released by Partick Thistle, netting twice in 27 games in his first season with the U’s. Other boss movements 2022 - Jürgen Klopp was named as both the LMA Manager of the Year and the Premier League’s Manager of the Season. 2001 - Kevin Keegan was appointed Manager of Manchester City, following his departure from the England job seven months earlier. He led them to the First Division title in his first season, then keeping them in the top flight before leaving in March 2005. 1997 - Graeme Souness resigned as Southampton boss. He had been in charge at The Dell for less than a year, during which time he had guided them to just one point clear of relegation, and famously signed Ali Dia, George Weah’s alleged cousin. Redders injured 1997 - Jamie Redknapp was stretchered off with an ankle injury as England beat South Africa 2-1 in a friendly at Old Trafford. This was not the only time he was injured while on international duty. Roger on target 1963 - Roger Hunt scored for the Football League side in a FA Centenary/Football League 75th anniversary match that ended 3-3 at Highbury. 1967 - He struck in England’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Spain at Wembley. Other international goalscorers 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez struck as Uruguay Under-20’s beat Norway 3-1 in a World Championship Finals group game in Poland. 2014 – Jordon Ibe bagged a treble as England Under-19’s thumped Montenegro 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Walsall, his last goals at this level. Clubmate Lloyd Jones debuted at this level, while Ryan Fulton played for Scotland in the same competition in Burton. 1939 - Future reds boss Don Welsh netted his only international goal while winning his third and final cap in England’s 2-0 friendly win in Romania. 1971 - Steve Heighway scored for the Republic of Ireland as they drew 1-1 with an FA XI at Lansdowne Road in a match to celebrate the FAI’s Golden Jubilee. This was his only goal for the senior Irish side. 2011 – Ex-red Robbie Keane bagged a brace, including a penalty, skippering the Republic of Ireland as they trounced Northern Ireland 5-0 in a Carling Nations Cup game in Dublin. 2012 - Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin netted for Turkey as they beat Georgia 3-1 in a friendly in Austria, his only goal as a Real Madrid player. 2006 – Şahin also played for Turkey as they drew a friendly 3-3 in Belgium. Backroom appointments 2012 – The appointments of Jen Chang as Corporate Relations and Communications Director and Chief Commercial Officer Billy Hogan were both announced. However, Chang left “by mutual consent” after just five months in the role. Chico the boss again 2002 - Steve Nicol was re-appointed interim head coach of New England Revolution, in the US Major League. He took them to the final of the MLS play-offs in his first full season, remaining in charge until October 2011. Howie for England 1984 - Ex-red Howard Gayle scored his only England Under-21’s goal while winning his third and final cap as they beat Spain 2-0 at Bramall Lane to clinch the European Championships 3-0 on aggregate. Fellow ex-red Dave Watson also played. 2010 – Conor Coady skippered England Under-17’s as they beat Turkey 2-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Liechtenstein, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. First and last caps 2006 - Mark González won his first cap as a reds player, and fourteenth to date, as Chile beat Steve Staunton’s Republic of Ireland side 1-0 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road, with future red Robbie Keane also featuring. Meanwhile, Ramon Calliste made his final appearance for Wales Under-21’s while on our books as they thumped Estonia 5-1 in a European Championships qualifier, with future red Ragnar Klavan winning his seventh and last cap at this level. Future red Daniel Agger and John Arne Riise were also in international action that day. 1998 – Future red Frode Kippe made his Norway Under-23’s debut as they beat Sweden 1-0 in Romania. 2019 – Rhys Williams won his fourth and last cap for England Under-18’s as they drew 1-1 with Spain in Slovakia, before losing a penalty shoot-out 3-2. Carl the champion 2006 - Carl Medjani skippered France Under-20’s to victory in the Final of the Toulon Tournament, with the game against the Netherlands ending goalless, but the French winning 5-3 on penalties. European Cup joy 1995 - Future red Jari Litmanen started as Ajax beat AC Milan 1-0 in Vienna to win the UEFA Champions League. 2000 - Ex-red Steve McManaman and future red Fernando Morientes both netted as Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 in the Stade de France to claim the trophy, with future reds Nicolas Anelka and Mauricio Pellegrino both also featuring. Also in international action 1964 – Gordon Milne and Peter Thompson both played for England as they beat the Republic of Ireland 3-1 in a friendly in Dublin. 1973 – Future red Ray Kennedy featured for England Under-23’s in their 1-1 draw in Denmark. 1981 – Future reds Mark Lawrenson and Michael Robinson both played as the Republic of Ireland lost a friendly 3-0 in Poland. 1983 – Future red John Wark turned out for Scotland as they were held to a goalless draw by Northern Ireland in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. 1986 – Future reds John Barnes and Peter Beardsley played for England as they beat Canada 1-0 in a friendly in Vancouver. 1987 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they beat Malta 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Gothenburg. 1988 – Barnes and Beardsley featured for England again, with clubmate Steve McMahon and future red Mark Wright also in action as England were held to a 1-1 draw by Colombia in a Rous Cup game at Wembley. 1994 – Future reds Phil Babb and Jason McAteer and ex-reds Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all played for the Republic of Ireland as they beat Bolivia 1-0 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. 2015 – Future red Marko Grujić played for Serbia Under-20’s as they beat the USA 1-0. -
Wembley glory for the 96 1989 - We clinched the FA Cup for the fourth time, in an all-Merseyside final, five weeks after the Hillsborough disaster that claimed 96 lives. John Aldridge, who was playing his hundredth reds game, opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a strike that was named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season, the only time the same player has claimed the award in consecutive seasons. We led until Stuart McCall equalised towards the end of the second half. Ian Rush put us back in front in extra-time before McCall became the first substitute to score twice in an FA Cup Final to level the match again. McCall’s achievement was then matched by Rushie who won us the cup with his 23rd FA Cup goal. The departure of a legend 1996 - Ian Rush signed for Leeds United on a free transfer, after his 346 strikes in 660 games had helped shoot us to countless honours. However, he bagged just three goals in 43 games for Leeds. Last win of the season 1985 - We played our only other first-class game on this day, winning 3-0 at West Ham United, our last win of a season that saw us finish second in the First Division, thirteen points behind Everton, and then go on to lose the European Cup Final on a tragic day at the Stade du Heysel in Brussels. Paul Walsh netted a brace, with Jim Beglin bagging the other. Jan Mølby played at centre-back, but lost five teeth in a collision with the Hammers’ Dave Swindlehurst. Most recently 2023 – Ollie Watkins missed a first-half penalty before Jacob Ramsay gave Aston Villa the lead inside the first half hour. Roberto Firmino bagged a late leveller in our last Anfield game of the season, with Jürgen Klopp watching from the stands as he started a touchline ban. A special day for Emlyn 1972 - Emlyn Hughes nabbed his only full international goal as England beat Wales 3-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff, up against John Toshack. 1980 - He played in the same tournament, no longer as a red, as England drew 1-1 with Northern Ireland at Wembley, as he captained them for the last time. We went 2-0 down to West Ham United through a Jamie Carragher own goal followed by a Pepe Reina fumble that Dean Ashton profited from. Djibril Cissé gave us hope before half-time with Gerrard equalising after the break, his 24th goal in his 79th and final reds outing. Future red Paul Konchesky then struck a long-range fluke, our hundredth goal against under Rafael Benítez, with Stevie G scoring a stunning long-range effort as the game moved into injury time, a goal that was later voted as the BBC’s Goal of the Season. Extra time saw no further score, with the reds triumphing 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out thanks to Pepe Reina’s three saves and successful strikes from Didi Hamann, playing his 283rd and last reds game, Gerrard and John Arne Riise. Fernando Morientes made his 61st and final reds appearance in this game, coming on for Harry Kewell who limped out of his third successive major final. He signed from Hayfield St. Matthews in September 1938 and scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. Cally for England 1966 - Ian Callaghan played for England in their 1-1 draw with a ‘Young England’ side, as part of the preparations for the World Cup. Cally made one appearance in the Finals, against France. New signings 1919 - Outside-right Harold Wadsworth signed pro terms having arrived from Tranmere Rovers as an amateur in January 1918. Happy birthday Rafa 1960 – Former reds boss Rafael Benítez was born in Madrid. He arrived from Valencia in June 2004 and took charge of the reds on 350 occasions, winning 194 times and leading us to the European Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield as well as three other finals. He left the club “by mutual consent” in June 2010. Clinching the title 1906 – We secured our second League title despite losing 3-2 on Easter Monday at Bolton Wanderers, as nearest challengers Preston North End also lost and so could not catch the reds. We therefore became the first team to win the Second and First Division championships in consecutive seasons. Jack Parkinson bagged a brace in our defeat at Burnden Park, with Albert Shepherd striking two of his twelve goals against the reds and Marshall McEwan also scoring. A derby classic 2001 - An amazing Easter Monday game ended in a 3-2 win, our first at Goodison for eleven years. Emile Heskey opened the scoring straight after an unsuccessful Blues penalty appeal. Duncan Ferguson then pounced on a defensive mix-up to equalise with his fifth and last goal past the reds before Markus Babbel netted a classic breakaway goal. Robbie Fowler missed a penalty that would have made it 3-1, before referee Jeff Winter changed the odds by first giving Igor Bišcan a second booking, and then awarding a dubious penalty, which David Unsworth converted, the hundredth League goal we had conceded under Gérard Houllier’s sole charge. Finally, Gary McAllister won the game with a supremely dramatic 44-yard free-kick late into stoppage time. This was Gary Mac’s hundredth career League goal. The birth of the hat-trick king 1904 - Forward Gordon Hodgson was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He signed from Transvaal in November 1925 and bagged a club record seventeen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games. However, he could not claim a club medal in his time at Anfield before joining Aston Villa for £3,000 in January 1936. A new man in charge 1991 - Graeme Souness took over as Liverpool Manager. He led us to the FA Cup in his first full season, his only trophy in three years in charge. He won 65 of his 157 games as boss. Nick Holmes struck a brace, with Steve Moran converting a penalty for the home side. New chairman 2010 – The club announced that Martin Broughton had been appointed as Chairman. He was brought in to find a buyer for the club from George Gillett and Tom Hicks, which he succeeded in finding in New England Sports Ventures six months later, following a series of legal battles. He left his role in November 2010 and was knighted for his services to business the following month. Rob Lee opened the scoring before Andy Cole equalled the Geordies’ club record of 29 strikes in a season, one of his eleven strikes past us. 1921 - We were held to a 1-1 draw by Derby County at Anfield in a First Division fixture, with Harry Chambers on the scoresheet as winger Jackie Sheldon played his 147th and last reds game. 1938 - We were beaten 4-1 at the Baseball Ground, with outside-left Alf Hanson grabbing our early consolation, his 52nd and last reds strike, and fiftieth in the League. Jack Nicholas and Ronnie Dix each netted the last of their four goals past us, with Sammy Crooks and Dai Astley both scoring one of their six goals against us. On the move 2010 – Reserves keeper Péter Gulácsi joined Tranmere Rovers on loan. He played five times, returning for a second temporary spell five months later. 2013 – Ex-reds winger Sebastián Leto signed for Italian side Calcio Catania, having been released by Panathinaikos three months earlier. Tosh for the Taffs 1969 – Future red John Toshack struck his first senior goal in his second game for Wales as they lost 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in East Germany. 1975 - He also netted as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-1 in Hungary. 2010 – Future red Thiago Alcântara netted for Spain Under-19’s in their 3-2 friendly win in Turkey. Stevie honoured again 2007 - Steven Gerrard was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive season, although he eventually lost his crown to Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Jocky, Ted and Tommy for the Scots 1975 - Partick Thistle’s Alan Hansen made his Scotland Under-23’s debut as they beat Sweden 2-1 in Gothenburg. Ex-reds reserves forward Ted MacDougall, then at Norwich City, netted on his senior Scotland debut on the same day as they drew 1-1 with the Swedes in a friendly, played in the same city. Future reds Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness both also played, with Kevin Keegan also playing for his country. 1969 - Tommy Lawrence won his second cap, nearly six years after his first, in a 1-1 draw with West Germany in a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park. He went on to win three caps in total, with Alun Evans playing for England Under-23’s on the same day. First and last caps 2002 - Stephen Wright won his tenth and final England Under-21’s cap as Portugal won a friendly 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium. Peter Crouch won his first cap as an Aston Villa player in the same game, and his second of six in total while Chris Kirkland and future reds Paul Konchesky and Jermaine Pennant also played. On the same day, Pepe Reina won his last Under-21’s cap as a Barcelona player as Spain beat FR Yugoslavia 2-1 in a friendly in Ceuta, with fellow future reds Xabi Alonso and Djibril Cissé also in action at this level. 2015 - Future red Bobby Adekanye won his eighth and last Under-16’s cap for the Netherlands in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Italy. Other reds games 1966 – Geoff Strong and Ian St. John struck as we beat Stoke City 2-0 at Anfield, leaving us needing just one more point to clinch the League title. Calvin Palmer was sent off for the visitors as right-half Gordon Milne played his 200th League game for the reds. 1965 – We lost 4-0 at Chelsea on Good Friday. Bobby Tambling bagged one of his eight goals against the reds, with Marvin Hinton also on target before the break. Bert Murray netted twice in the second half. 1955 – We drew 2-2 with Leeds United in a Second Division encounter in L4. Jimmy Payne and Tony Rowley both scored. 1932 – We lost 3-1 at Birmingham City with Gordon Gunson scoring from the spot. John Bradford netted the final two of his fifteen goals past us with Tom Grosvenor also on target. Dirk signs on 2011 – Dirk Kuyt agreed a new contract until 2013. He bagged 71 goals in 285 reds games since signing from Feyenoord for £9m in August 2006, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for €1m in June 2012. A centenary celebration 1988 - We took part in the Mercantile Credit Football League Centenary Festival, but only survived one 40-minute morning match at Wembley Stadium that ended in a goalless draw with Newcastle United before the Geordies won a sudden-death penalty shoot-out 1-0 after Gary Kelly saved Steve McMahon’s spot-kick. Unfortunately, John Barnes suffered an injury in this game that ruled him out of our next League fixture. Also in international action 1989 – Future red Ronnie Rosenthal played for Israel in their 1-1 draw with Australia in a World Cup qualifier in Sydney. 1994 – Future red Brad Friedel featured for the USA as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Moldova in Florida. -
The return of the king 2011 – Roy Hodgson left as Manager “by mutual consent”, with Kenny Dalglish resuming the hot seat on a caretaker basis. Hodgson had led us to just thirteen wins in 31 games, with the King restoring the club’s pride and ethos, although he was sacked in May 2012. Carra makes his debut 1997 - Jamie Carragher made his reds bow as a substitute for Rob Jones in our 2-1 defeat at Middlesbrough in a Coca-Cola Cup Fifth Round tie. Steve McManaman grabbed our consolation, while Stig Inge Bjørnebye was making his hundredth reds appearance. Departure of a striking sensation 1936 - South African striker Gordon Hodgson was sold to Aston Villa for £3,000. He had bagged a club record eighteen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games since signing from Transvaal in November 1925, although he was unable to claim a medal in his time at Anfield. He only stayed at Villa Park for a year before joining Leeds United. Tchau Phil 2018 – Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho joined Barcelona for an initial, eye-watering £105m fee, comfortably a reds club record. He had signed from Internazionale in January 2013 for £8.5m, bagging 54 goals in 201 appearances. Fielding the kids 2017 – Our youngest ever starting eleven, aged on average 21 years and 296 days, was held to a goalless draw by Plymouth Argyle in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield. We won the replay but fell at the next hurdle to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Happy birthdays 1953 - Hughie McAuley was born in Bootle. He moved to Melwood to become Reserve Team Manager just before the start of the 2002/03 season, working as a Coach at that level with Gary Ablett, before taking charge of the Under-18’s back at the Academy. He had previously been a regular in our reserves in the early 1970’s, before working with the Academy on a full-time basis since June 1990. He played a major role in our FA Youth Cup triumph in 1996 and helped to develop players including Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen.. He left the club in the summer of 2009. 1947 - Former reserves forward Ted MacDougall was born in Inverness. He signed pro terms on his nineteenth birthday in 1966 but never made our first-team, moving on to York City for £5,000 in 1967. He enjoyed his greatest success with Norwich City, for whom he banged in 66 goals in 138 games. 1949 – Forward Steve Peplow was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his seventeenth birthday and struck nineteen goals for the reserves in 1968/69, but only played three senior games, without finding the back of the net. He left for Swindon Town in June 1971 after a successful loan spell there. 1991 – Former Academy forward Marvin Pourié was born in Werne in Germany. He arrived from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2007 at the age of sixteen, scoring twelve times in his first year with the Under-18’s but returned to Germany in January 2009, joining Schalke 04. 1999 – Polish keeper Kamil Grabara was born in Ruda Śląska. He arrived in the summer of 2016 from Ruch Chorzów, making it to the first-team bench once before moving on to F.C. København in July 2021. 1884 - Robert Blanthorne was born in Birkenhead. He only played twice for the first team, at the end of the 1906/07 season after signing from Birkenhead in the second half of the campaign. 1932 - Left-back Tom Wilkie died. He struck once in 64 reds appearances after signing from Heart Of Midlothian in January 1895, moving on to Portsmouth in 1899. 1869 - James Kelso was born in Cardross. He only played one senior reds game, in a 4-0 Lancashire League defeat of Bury at Anfield in September 1892, and sadly committed suicide aged just 29, back in his native Scotland. Stewart’s treble 1910 – Inside-right Jimmy Stewart scored a hat-trick as we thumped Chelsea 5-1 at Anfield. Jack Parkinson added a brace. Debutants galore 2016 – Winger Ryan Kent and left-back Joe Maguire played their only senior reds games, with centre-half Tiago Ilori, winger Sheyi Ojo and midfielder Kevin Stewart also debuting as a very inexperienced side drew 2-2 at League Two side Exeter City in the FA Cup Third Round as Christian Benteke skippered the side for the only time. We twice fell behind, but the only reds goals from forward Jerome Sinclair and left-back Brad Smith drew us level each time. Most recently 2021 – We won an FA Cup Third Round tie 4-1 behind closed doors at a COVID-struck Aston Villa. Sadio Mané bagged a brace with Gini Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah both also on target. On the same day, ex-red Gary Mackay-Steven signed for Heart Of Midlothian, netting four times in eighteen appearances in his first campaign back in Scotland. Red departures 1955 – Forward Fred Geary died. He signed from Everton for £60 in May 1895, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. 2010 - Andrea Dossena joined SSC Napoli for €4.25m. He had struck twice in 31 reds games after signing from Udinese for £7m in July 2008. On the same day, centre-half Zak Whitbread left Millwall for Norwich City after four goals in 119 games for the Lions. 2020 – Young midfielder Isaac Christie-Davies joined Cercle Brugge Koninklijke Sportvereniging on loan, having played just one senior reds game. He netted on his debut in a friendly, but failed to make a senior appearance, moving on permanently to Barnsley in September 2020. Stumbling towards Cardiff 2003 - Two late Michael Tonge strikes gave Sheffield United the first leg advantage in our Worthington Cup Semi-final at Bramall Lane, after Neil Mellor’s first senior goal had opened the scoring. We, of course, turned things around in the second leg, to progress to our ninth League Cup Final. More managerial ins and outs 1997 - Kevin Keegan resigned as Manager of Newcastle United for the first time. He had been in charge for nearly five years, guiding them to the First Division title in his first full season in charge, and then to within a whisker of the Premiership in 1996. 2001 - Nigel Spackman was appointed First Division Barnsley’s boss. He was in charge for nine months before being sacked. 2009 - Nigel Clough took over as Manager of Derby County, as a replacement for Paul Jewell. He remained in charge until being sacked in September 2013. Bill’s century 1949 – Bill Jones played his hundredth reds game, putting through his own net as we drew an FA Cup third Round tie 2-2 at Nottingham Forest. We were two goals behind at half time, but Willie Fagan and Bob Paisley both struck late on, before the match headed into extra time. The Shrimpers again 1958 - Right-back John Molyneux struck his first reds goal as we beat Southend United 3-2 in an FA Cup Third Round replay, as well as putting through his own net. Centre-half Dick White scored his only reds goal, with Tony Rowley netting his 38th and last goal for the club. Sammy McCrory bagged the other goal for the Shrimpers. We made it to the Sixth Round that season before falling to Blackburn Rovers. The lights go out in Bristol 1994 - Our FA Cup Third Round match at Bristol City was called off during the second half, due to floodlight failure. We were eventually knocked out by the First Division side in an Anfield replay. Mixed fortunes against Rovers We have faced Blackburn Rovers three times on this day in history, winning twice in the FA Cup. 1898 - However, we lost the first meeting 2-1, when our strike came from a William Ball own goal in a First Division match at Ewood Park. Forward Bobby Colvin made the first of his three reds appearances in this game. 1983 - We won away from home by the same score in the Third Round, with David Hodgson and Ian Rush on target. Unfortunately, we only reached the Fifth Round, going out at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. 1991 - Ray Houghton, Ian Rush and Steve Staunton were on the scoresheet as we won a Third Round replay 3-0 at Anfield. Steve McMahon was sent off in this game, as Glenn Hysén had been in the drawn first meeting. We went as far as the Fifth Round again that year before being knocked out by Everton. Evans on target and off 1955 - We drew 1-1 at Lincoln City in an FA Cup Third Round tie, with goalscorer John Evans sent off. We won the replay four days later, after extra time, as we made it to the Fifth Round before being knocked out by Huddersfield Town at Anfield. No goals against Palace We have twice faced Crystal Palace in the FA Cup Third Round on this day in history, with both matches ending goalless. 1938 – We were held at Selhurst Park in our first ever meeting with the Eagles, making it as far as the Fifth Round when we were knocked out by Huddersfield Town. 1977 – We drew in L4 when Ray Clemence made his 400th appearance for the reds. We of course reached the Final that year. On our way to Wembley 1974 - We won an FA Cup Third Round replay 2-0 at Doncaster Rovers in a game that kicked off at 1:30pm on a Tuesday, due to the three-day working week, having only just survived the first game at Anfield. Steve Heighway and Peter Cormack netted as we set off towards our second Cup triumph. Named the best 2019 - Mohamed Salah was named as CAF African Footballer of the Year for the second consecutive time after a calendar year in which he had netted in the UEFA Champions League Final, amongst his 24 goals in 51 reds games. Naby Keïta and Sadio Mané were also named in the Team of the Year. 2024 - Dominik Szoboszlai was named Hungarian male Athlete of the Year for the second time, having won it three years earlier. Jermaine the record breaker 1999 - Jermaine Pennant signed for the Gunners from Notts County in a £2m deal, becoming the most expensive teenager in English football history, aged just sixteen. He only grabbed three goals for Arsenal, but they all came in his first League start as he made just 26 senior appearances, although he only played one other League game from the off. Other reds games 1972 – We lost 1-0 at Leicester City with Ally Brown heading in very early. 1966 – Ron Yeats scored a diving header, the only goal of our trip to Highbury against Arsenal. 1921 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. Titi on target 1997 – Future red Titi Camara struck for Guinea as they lost a friendly 2-1 to Ivory Coast in Bouaké. A new contract 2007 - Young midfielder Danny Guthrie signed a new contract until June 2009. He played just seven senior reds games before being sold to Newcastle United for £2.25m in July 2008. A final cap 1995 - Rigobert Song won his eighth and final cap as a Tonnerre Yaoundé player as Cameroon were held to a goalless draw by Malawi in Douala. 2013 – Oussama Assaidi played for Morocco as they held Zambia to a goalless draw in a friendly in Johannesburg. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah featured in Egypt’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Tunisia in Cairo. -
Debuting at Anfield 1998 - Steven Gerrard made his reds bow as a last-minute substitute for Vegard Heggem in our 2-0 defeat of Blackburn Rovers at Anfield, which came courtesy of goals from Michael Owen and Paul Ince. 1913 - Winger Jackie Sheldon debuted in our 2-1 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur, with Jimmy Dawson grabbing his first reds goal and Tom Miller also on target. Ken Campbell saved a penalty from Jimmy Cantrell, who struck the visitors’ goal. 2006 - Young Moroccan forward Nabil El Zhar debuted as we were held to a goalless draw at home by Portsmouth, with Jamie Carragher stepping up into central midfield as we struggled to overcome an injury crisis. 1976 - Mark Lawrenson played his first game at Anfield, nearly five years before signing for the reds. He appeared for Preston North End in an FA Cup First Round replay, as they beat Crewe Alexandra 3-0. Recent milestones 2016 – Forward Ben Woodburn became the club’s youngest ever goalscorer aged 17 years 45 days, scoring his only reds goal as we beat Leeds United 2-0 in a League Cup Quarter-final encounter at Anfield. Divock Origi had handed us the lead with just under a quarter of an hour remaining before Woodburn struck. 2017 – Emre Can reached a century of League games for the reds as we won 3-0 at Stoke City. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, with substitute Mohamed Salah adding a late brace. God has left the building 2001 - Robbie Fowler was sold to Leeds United for a reported £11m. He had notched 171 goals in 330 reds games in this first spell, and left with UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two League Cup winners’ medals from this first spell. He only played 33 times in fourteen months at Elland Road, netting fourteen times before moving on again to Manchester City. A good and bad day for Stoke 2000 - We secured our biggest ever away win, and Stoke City’s record home defeat, as we triumphed 8-0 in the Fourth Round of the Worthington Cup. 27,109 attended the game – a then record at their new Britannia Stadium. They struggled to keep up, with the scoreboard at one time flashing up 9-0! It was also a game of several firsts, as Richie Partridge and Stephen Wright both made their first-team debuts, with Markus Babbel bagging his first reds goal and Christian Ziege on target for the second and last time. Robbie Fowler grabbed a hat-trick, including a penalty, with our other goals coming from Vladimír Šmicer, Sami Hyypiä and Danny Murphy. Another derby win 2009 - We won 2-0 at Goodison, securing our third straight victory in this fixture. We opened the scoring when Joseph Yobo deflected a speculative Javier Mascherano strike past Tim Howard, with Dirk Kuyt adding a late second after Pepe Reina had pulled off a spectacular double save. A win at the Bridge 2011 – We won 2-0 at Chelsea in the Fifth Round of the League Cup, with Andy Carroll having a penalty saved. Maxi Rodríguez struck before Martin Kelly headed in his only reds goal. Lucas Leiva ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in this game, thus ruling him out for the rest of the season. Half ton doc 1980 – David Johnson scored his fiftieth League goal for the reds as we won 4-2 at Sunderland, with Sammy Lee nabbing a brace and Terry McDermott also on target. Also recently 2015 – James Milner scored from the spot to secure a 1-0 victory over Swansea City at Anfield. 2014 – Right-back Glen Johnson headed his ninth and last reds goal late on to beat Stoke City at Anfield after Rickie Lambert’s effort had rebounded off the crossbar. A change that backfired 1975 - We changed our usual routine by not staying overnight in a hotel before our game at home to Norwich City. We immediately returned to the usual routine following our 3-1 defeat, with Emlyn Hughes netting our consolation. Ex-reds reserve Ted MacDougall scored, with World Cup winner Martin Peters netted one of his fourteen strikes against the reds, and Colin Suggett bagging one of his four goals past us. This was one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered throughout the whole of the 1970’s. A century against the Gunners 1969 - Arsenal won 1-0 at Anfield in a top-flight fixture, our hundredth meeting in all competitions, including 21 when they were known as Woolwich Arsenal. Off 1980 - Reserves centre-back Dave Watson left for Norwich City for £50,000, rising to £200,000. He went on to make 256 appearances for the Canaries, leading them to the Milk Cup in 1985 and the Second Division title a year later. 2017 – Ki-Jana Hoever was dismissed for Netherlands Under-16’s as they lost 2-1 to Brazil in Florida, with fellow future red Ryan Gravenberch also featuring. Trebles for and against 1930 - Gordon Hodgson scored the seventh of his seventeen reds hat-tricks as we thumped Sheffield United 6-1 at Anfield. Inside-left Archie McPherson added a brace, while Jim Smith was also on target. Outside-right Danny McRorie made his debut in this game, as Jimmy Dunne bagged one of his eleven strikes against the reds with keeper Arthur Riley reaching a century of League outings for the reds. 1902 - We also faced the Blades in another First Division fixture, when we lost 2-0 at Bramall Lane. 1924 - Joe Bradford bagged a treble for Birmingham City in their 5-2 win at St. Andrews, three of his fifteen goals past us, with Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw on target for the away side and left-winger Billy Chalmers making his reds bow, while centre-half Walter Wadsworth made his 200th League appearance for us. Bradford remains City’s record scorer against the reds with fifteen. Percy Barton and Ernie Islip also netted for the Blues. European stalemate 1972 - We held Dynamo Berlin to a goalless draw in East Germany in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Third Round tie with the reds caught offside on eighteen occasions. We won the return 3-1 to continue towards our first European trophy. Against the Sky Blues We have entertained Coventry City twice on this day in history. 1986 - Jan Mølby netted a penalty and John Wark also struck as we won our First Division fixture 2-0, just three days after he had struck a treble of spot kicks past the Sky Blues in a Milk Cup tie also at Anfield. 1977 - David Fairclough and Phil Neal, from the spot, scored as we were held to a 2-2 draw in the Fourth Round of the League Cup. Boss Bob Paisley was presented with his OBE by the Queen at Buckingham Palace earlier that day. We won the replay three weeks later as we went all the way to our first ever Final in this competition that season. Knocked out 1995 - We lost our grip on the Coca-Cola Cup when future Blue Steve Watson grabbed the only goal of the game late on for Newcastle United in our Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Signing on 1994 - Keeper Mark Prudhoe signed on loan from Stoke City. He never made our first team but sat on our bench eight times. He is now working as a coach in Sunderland’s Academy. 1963 – Keeper Billy Molyneux signed as a professional. He played just one senior game as Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1965, which came only five days before the FA Cup Final. International goalscorers 1961 - Ian St. John bagged a brace in Scotland’s 4-2 extra-time World Cup play-off defeat by Czechoslovakia played at the Stade du Heysel in Brussels. 1994 - Ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal netted in Israel’s 4-3 friendly defeat of Cyprus in Jerusalem. 1997 - Future red Harry Kewell struck as Australia drew 2-2 with Iran in a World Cup play-off in Melbourne, which meant that they missed out on the World Cup in France on the away goals rule. 2007 – Future red Jonjo Shelvey netted for England Under-16’s in the Sky Sports Victory Shield as they beat Scotland 2-1 in Falkirk. He actually struck in all three games as England claimed the trophy. 2022 – Future red Cody Gakpo scored in his third consecutive game for the Netherlands, his last goal as a PSV Eindhoven player as they beat host nation Qatar 2-0 in a World Cup Finals group game, with Virgil van Dijk captaining the side. On the same day, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson faced ex-reds Joe Allen, Danny Ward, Neco Williams and Harry Wilson as England beat Wales 3-0. Happy birthdays 1962 - Alan Irvine was born in Broxburn. The Scot only made four substitute appearances for the reds after signing from Falkirk for £75,000 in October 1986. He returned north the following August to join Dundee United. 1918 - Left-winger Doug McAvoy was born. He only made two senior reds appearances after signing from his hometown club Kilmarnock in December 1947 for £7,000, moving back to Scotland to join Queen Of The South in September 1949. Into seventh 2021 – Mohamed Salah came seventh in the annual Ballon d’Or award for the best player in Europe, with ex-reds Raheem Sterling and Luis Suárez appearing in fifteenth and seventeenth places, respectively. On the same day, Salah was named as Football Supporters’ Association Men’s Player of the Year for the second time. Youngsters in action 2003 - Three young reds appeared in the Under-20’s World Championship Finals in the United Arab Emirates. Zak Whitbread played in the USA’s 3-1 defeat of Paraguay, Darren Potter appeared as the Republic of Ireland beat Saudi Arabia 2-1, and John Welsh and future reds Andy Lonergan, James Milner and Gary O’Neil all featured in England’s 1-0 defeat by Japan. 2012 – Jordan Rossiter captained England Under-16’s as their 1-0 defeat of Scotland in Burton saw them win the Victory Shield for the twelfth consecutive year, with future red Joe Gomez also featuring. 2018 – Future red Mateusz Musiałowski won his fourth and last cap for Poland Under-16’s in their 4-0 defeat of Northern Ireland. 2017 – Fulham’s Fábio Carvalho played for England Under-16’s as they beat the USA 1-0 in Florida, with Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax featuring as the Netherlands lost 2-1 to Brazil in Florida at the same level. Tens of caps 1978 - Four current or future reds reached international milestones. Kenny Dalglish won his sixtieth cap as Scotland won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Portugal, while ex-red Joey Jones made his twentieth appearance as Wales beat Turkey 1-0 in another qualifier at his home ground in Wrexham. Phil Thompson played his tenth game for England, while his former clubmate Kevin Keegan won his fortieth cap as England beat Czechoslovakia 1-0 in a friendly at Wembley. Other reds games 1989 – We lost 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday, although we remained top of the table. David N’Gog netted for France Under-21’s as they beat Turkey 2-0 in a friendly in Troyes, while future red Jordan Henderson bagged his first goal at the same level as England beat Romania 2-1 in the first leg of their European Championships Play-off at Carrow Road, with future red Daniel Sturridge also featuring. International reds galore 2005 - A whole host of reds featured in World Cup qualifiers, with Peter Crouch winning his first cap as a reds player in England’s 1-0 defeat of Austria at Old Trafford, and Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Christian Poulsen and ex-red Michael Owen all also in action. Djibril Cissé struck as France drew 1-1 in future red Philip Degen’s Switzerland, with ex-red El-Hadji Diouf on target as Senegal beat a Mali side that included Momo Sissoko and Djimi Traoré 3-0 in Dakar. 2004 – Darren Potter and future reds Daniel Agger, Alberto Aquilani, Ramon Calliste, Scott Carson, Stewart Downing, Glen Johnson, Gary O’Neil and Jermaine Pennant all played in European Championships qualifiers at Under-21’s level, with future red James Milner netting his first goal at this level. 2007 - Péter Gulácsi and Krisztián Németh both played for Hungary Under-19’s as they trounced Kazakhstan 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Szekesfehervar, with Németh winning his first cap at this level as a red. 2011 – Gulácsi skippered Hungary Under-21’s in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying defeat in Turkey. Charlie Adam and future red Mohamed Salah were also in international action that day. 2015 – Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter and future red Dominic Solanke all played as England Under-19’s won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Macedonia. Mamadou Sakho and ex-reds Javier Mascherano and Krisztián Németh also featured for their countries on the same day. 2021 – Ex-red Danny Ward scored an own goal as Wales drew 2-2 with the Czech Republic in a World Cup qualifier in Prague, with both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah captaining their countries to victories in World Cup action. Owen Beck, Morgan Boyes, Neco Williams, future reds Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, and ex-reds Joe Allen, Ki-Jana Hoever and Harry Wilson all also featured in internationals. Joe honoured 2012 – Reds midfielder Joe Allen was named Player of the Year and Club Player of the Year for 2011/12 at the FAW Awards, based on his time with Swansea City and the national side. Jimmy’s death 1908 – Forward Jimmy Stott died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He signed from Middlesbrough in August 1893, netting fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in July 1894. Geoff Strong scored inside the first minute, but Allan Clarke bagged the first two of his seven goals against us, with Ian St. John completing the scoring before the break. 1960 – We won a Second Division encounter 2-1 at Lincoln City as Roger Hunt nabbed a brace. 1904 – We beat Barnsley 2-0 in a Second Division fixture at Oakwell. Bobby Robinson had a penalty saved but converted the rebound, with John Carlin also on target. In opposition 1938 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won his only cap for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Windsor Park. Andy Beattie, who guested for the reds during the war and later spent some time on our backroom staff, and Bill Shankly were both on the winning side. O’Mahoney also won six caps for the south of Ireland. -
Walsh walks in 1984 - Paul Walsh signed from Luton Town for £700,000. He went on to nab 37 goals in 112 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1986, although he missed the run-in due to ruptured ankle ligaments. He left Anfield to sign for Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000 in February 1988. The youngsters claim a trophy 1996 - We won the FA Youth Cup for the first of four times to date. We beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield, to claim the trophy 4-1 on aggregate. Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen featured for the reds. Setting records 1979 - Our 3-0 win at Leeds United was our thirtieth League victory of the season, one behind Tottenham Hotspur’s record from 1960/61. David Johnson bagged a brace either side of a Jimmy Case strike in a game originally postponed from two months earlier. We therefore ended the League season having only conceded sixteen goals in all, a record that stood until 2004/05 with a then record 68 points, having clinched our eleventh League title a week earlier. We also netted a total of 85 League goals, so claiming a £50,000 prize from a national newspaper for scoring more than two goals per game across the season. Red farewells 2022 – Nathan Redmond put Southampton ahead early on at St Mary’s Stadium, but ex-Saints loanee Takumi Minamino struck his fourteenth goal in his 55th and final outing. Divock Origi came off the bench for his 175th and last reds appearance, with Joël Matip heading in as we eventually won 2-1 to take the title race down to the final day. 2009 - We won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion to relegate the home side, thanks to goals from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt. This was our thirteenth away League win of the season, equalling a club record from 1904/05, and our ninth straight win at The Hawthorns. Álvaro Arbeloa played his 98th and final reds game, being involved with an angry exchange with Jamie Carragher towards the end of the match. Crossing the park 1895 - Forward Fred Geary signed from Everton for £60, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. Other games on this day We have only played three other first-class games on this day over the years. 1985 - We beat Watford 4-3 at Anfield with Ian Rush grabbing a brace, to add to a goal from Kenny Dalglish and a John Wark penalty. Jim Beglin scored an own goal in this match, with John Barnes and Colin West also on target for the visitors. Our other two games ended in 1-1 away draws. 1947 - Winger Bob Priday netted his first reds goal at Brentford as we survived almost the entire second half with ten men after an injury to Bob Paisley. 1969 - Roger Hunt was on the scoresheet at Newcastle United as we ended the season in second place, six points behind champions Leeds United. This game was originally postponed back in December. International debutants 1964 - Peter Thompson made his England debut in their 4-3 friendly defeat of Portugal in Lisbon. Clubmate Gordon Milne also played. 1928 - Future reds left-back Ernie Blenkinsop won the first of his 26 England caps as they thumped France 5-1 in a friendly in Paris. 2007 - Stephen Darby won his first cap for England Under-19’s, playing alongside clubmates Adam Hammill, Jack Hobbs and Craig Lindfield, and against Jordy Brouwer as the Netherlands won this European Championships qualifier 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Into the park 2002 - Liverpool Football Club announced their first set of plans for a new stadium in Stanley Park, which it was said would hold 55,000 supporters. The new stadium was scheduled to cost between £60m and £70m to build and it was claimed that it could even be ready for the start of the 2005/06 season. These plans have now been moth-balled. Wor Kev’s testimonial 1984 - We took part in a testimonial game for Kevin Keegan as we drew 2-2 at Newcastle United. Michael Robinson and Graeme Souness bagged our goals, while Keegan and Terry McDermott were on target for the home side. Thommo at the wrong end 1980 - Skipper Phil Thompson scored an own goal for England as they were thumped 4-1 by Wales at the Racecourse Ground in the British International Championships. Ex-red Larry Lloyd won his fourth and final cap, and his only one as a Nottingham Forest player, eight years after his previous cap. Ray Clemence, Ray Kennedy and Phil Neal all also played, as did ex-red Joey Jones for the Welsh. A treble for the Saint 1964 - Ian St. John scored a hat-trick as we beat Mexican side Monterrey 3-0 in a friendly in Chicago. Heading east 1991 - We played our first ever game in Singapore, drawing 1-1 with Arsenal in the Caltex Cup, with Ian Rush on the scoresheet. The game went into extra-time, but we lost 4-3 on penalties in the National Stadium. 1961 - Alan A’Court netted for England in an FA Tour game in Singapore that ended in a 9-0 rout. Manchester City’s George Hannah bagged a treble. Facing the Mancs 1919 – We lost 1-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford in a game staged in aid of the National Footballers’ War Fund. In and outs 1909 – Welsh international right-half Maurice Parry left the reds to join Partick Thistle. He had scored four times in 221 reds games since arriving from Brighton United in August 1900. He later spent time coaching back at Anfield. 1935 - Right-back Bob Done was sold to Reading for £150. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games after signing from his hometown club Runcorn in April 1926. 1982 – Centre-half John McGregor signed from Queen's Park, failing to break through before moving on to Rangers in May 1987, with whom he won the League Cup. 2020 – First-team coach Jacques Crevoisier died. He worked under Gérard Houllier for two years after the departure of Patrice Bergues. On target for England 1986 - Future red Peter Beardsley grabbed his first full international goal as England beat Mexico 3-0 in a friendly in Los Angeles. Watford’s John Barnes also played. 1994 - Beardsley, then back with Newcastle United, also scored for England, playing alongside reds full-back Rob Jones, as England thumped Greece 5-0 in a friendly at Wembley. 2002 - Another future reds forward struck for England Under-21’s, as Peter Crouch grabbed his only goal at this level in a 2-1 defeat of host nation Switzerland in a European Championship Finals group game, with fellow future reds Paul Konchesky and Jermaine Pennant also featuring. Ex-red Rigobert Song also represented his country that day, as Cameroon lost a friendly 2-1 in Denmark. King Kenny for the Scots Kenny Dalglish twice represented his country against Wales in the British International Championships on this day in the 1970’s. 1975 - He featured in a 2-2 draw alongside John Toshack and ex-red Ted MacDougall at Ninian Park. Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes and Kevin Keegan all played the same day in a goalless draw in Northern Ireland. 1978 - Kenny, Graeme Souness and Joey Jones also played in a 1-1 draw at Hampden Park. A Swedish thumping 1914 - We trounced a Swedish XI 8-0 in a friendly in Stockholm. Billy Lacey bagged a brace, with William Banks, Donald McKinlay and Tom Miller also amongst the scorers. Djibril the champion 1999 - Future red Djibril Cissé played as Auxerre beat Saint-Étienne at the Stade de France in a penalty shoot-out to claim the Coupe Nationale des Juniors, also known as the Challenge Emmanuel Gambardella. 2006 – Future reds centre-half Kolo Touré was on the losing side as Barcelona beat Arsenal 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League Final in Paris. Happy birthday cobber 1974 – Former Head of Fitness & Conditioning Darren Burgess was born in Sydney. He joined the club after the 2010 World Cup, but moved back down under in September 2012. On the move again 2005 - Ex-red Patrik Berger agreed to sign for Aston Villa from Portsmouth on a free transfer on 1st July. He had notched eight times in sixty Pompey games, but turned out just 32 times for Villa, netting twice. He was released in May 2008, returning home to join Sparta Praha. 2010 – Ex-reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević was released by Leicester City, having failed to make the first team since making his loan move permanent. 2012 – Ex-reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall signed for Morecambe, so far netting twice in 64 games for the League Two outfit. 2018 – Pepijn Lijnders was sacked as Manager of N.E.C. after they failed to gain promotion, soon returning to a coaching role with the reds. 2022 - Martin Škrtel announced his retirement from playing, having most recently appeared for Hajskala Ráztočno in his native Slovakia. He joined the reds from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m in January 2008 to become our most expensive defender to date. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. On the same day, future red Cody Gakpo won the Golden Shoe Award as the Eredivisie’s Footballer of the Year. 2023 – It was announced that forward Roberto Firmino and midfielders Naby Keïta, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would all be leaving the club at the end of the season. Signing on 1991 - Midfielder Kevin Lampkin signed professional terms with the reds. He failed to break through into the first team but went on to play League football with Huddersfield Town and Mansfield Town. 2015 - Future reds midfielder Marko Grujić signed a new three-year contract with Crvena Zvezda. However, he was transferred to the reds for £5.1m the following January. 2021 – New York-born midfielder Matteo Ritacci signed a new contract. He has yet to make the breakthrough at Anfield, spending the 2022 season on loan with Charleston Battery in North Carolina. On the same day, ex-reds left-back Paul Konchesky was appointed Assistant Manager of West Ham United Women. Final caps 2018 - Elijah Dixon-Bonner won his fourth and last cap for England Under-17’s against the Netherlands, with Bobby Duncan and future red Ryan Gravenberch also playing in their goalless European Championships Semi-final in Chesterfield, with the Dutch triumphing in a penalty shoot-out as ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England. On the same day, future red Jakub Ojrzyński featured for Poland Under-15’s for the third and final time as they drew a friendly 0-0 in Estonia.
