Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 2001 – Midfielder Jake Cain was born in Wigan. He signed as a professional in September 2019, making his only senior appearance in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020. He moved on to Swindon Town in January 2023. Spurs stuffed 1978 - Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst ever Anfield defeat, despite including their new World Cup winners, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Kenny Dalglish and substitute David Johnson both grabbed a brace, added to by Ray Kennedy and a twice-taken Phil Neal penalty, before Terry McDermott rounded off a brilliant team move to make it 7-0. Into the League 1893 - We played our first ever game in the Football League, winning 2-0 at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Forward Malcolm McVean scored our first ever League goal after an hour, with centre-half Joe McQue nabbing the other. James Henderson played his only senior reds game, while winger Patrick Gordon and forward Jimmy Stott also made their debuts in this game. This was also the first ever League game staged at the Paradise Ground. A busy day 2013 – A whole host of transfers took place on deadline day, with forward Fabio Borini joining Sunderland on loan, while ex-reds left-back Andrea Dossena also signed for the Black Cats on a free transfer from Rafael Benítez’s SSC Napoli. Two centre-halves arrived at Anfield, with Mamadou Sakho arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for £15m and Tiago Ilori signing from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £7m. On the same day, winger Victor Moses arrived on loan from Chelsea with Dani Pacheco leaving the reds to sign for Spanish side AD Alcorcón. Meanwhile, Momo Sissoko had his contract with Paris Saint-Germain terminated. More red ins and outs 1959 – Forward Bobby Murdoch left the reds to join Barrow. He struck seven times in nineteen reds games after signing as a professional in May 1957, as we struggled in the Second Division. 1994 - John Scales signed from Wimbledon for £3.5m. He struck four times in 94 games in his two years at Anfield, before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £2.6m in December 1996. On the same day, Paul Stewart joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. He scored twice in ten appearances for Wolves, and later joined Burnley and Sunderland on loan, having slipped out of the first team picture at Anfield. 2014- Cameroon-born centre-back Stephen Sama left the reds to sign for VfB Stuttgart having failed to make a senior appearance since arriving from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in July 2009. 2015 – The capture of Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza from Internacional for a reported £500,000 was announced, with his loan departure to Finnish club Seinäjoen Jalkapallokerho also revealed on the same day. 2019 – Winger Ryan Kent was sold to Rangers for £7m after a successful loan spell in which he had struck six times in 43 appearances. On the same day, keeper Shamal George joined Marine on loan and forward Bobby Duncan was sold to Fiorentina for €2m. Meanwhile, Martin Škrtel was released after less than a month with Atalanta and signed for İstanbul Başakşehir on the same day. Nice one Cyril 1939 - Cyril Done scored the only goal of the game on his reds debut at home to Chelsea, the day after Germany invaded Poland, and the day before Britain declared war, which resulted in the cancellation of the football season, so he had to wait until October 1946 to make his official reds bow. Full-back Jim Harley was sent off. Out-gunned We have faced Arsenal four times in top-flight matches on this day in history, without securing victory. 1905 - We lost 3-1 at Woolwich Arsenal with Bobby Robinson bagging our consolation, and Sam Raybould missing a penalty in our first game of the season. Jack Parkinson broke his wrist in this match, keeping him out of the side for six months. We finished the game with nine men after Billy Dunlop twisted his knee. Tim Coleman netted the first of his nine goals against the reds, with ex-red CharlIe Satterthwaite and Jimmy Blair also on the scoresheet. 1911 - We returned to the Manor Ground for another season opener, when John McConnell scored his only reds goal with Samual Gilligan also netting as we left with a 2-2 draw. 1922 - We lost 1-0 to Arsenal at Highbury, thanks to an Arthur Hutchins penalty. 2012 – Loanee Nuri Şahin made his reds bow as the Gunners comfortably won 2-0 at Anfield, with Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla bagging the goals. Beating the Trotters We have entertained Bolton Wanderers three times on this day in history, winning twice and drawing on the other occasion. 1914 - Billy Lacey, Arthur Metcalf, Jimmy Nicholl and Jackie Sheldon all struck as we won our opening First Division fixture 4-3. Evan Jones scored, with Joe Smith grabbing two of his twelve goals against us. 1916 - Fred Pagnam, Arthur Goddard and Jack Bamber netted as we won a Wartime League match 3-1. 1931 - Dave Wright bagged a brace in a 2-2 top-flight draw as George Gibson scored the final goal of his five past us, with Ray Westwood netting the first of his nine. Red centurions 1950 - Jack Balmer struck his hundredth reds goal as we drew 1-1 at Aston Villa. 1925 – Matt McQueen reached a century of League games in charge as we beat Notts County 2-0 at Anfield. Billy Flint put through his own net, with Dick Forshaw also scoring inside the opening half hour. Debutants on the mark 1899 – Inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter scored on his reds bow, as we lost 3-2 at Stoke in our season opener, with skipper Alex Raisbeck also on target and forward Peter Kyle also making his reds bow. Double debutants 1972 - Keeper Frank Lane played the first of his two senior reds games, unfortunately conceding an own goal, often attributed to Alan Hinton, as we lost 2-1 at League champions Derby County, despite John Toshack putting us in front. Midfielder Peter Cormack also made his reds bow in this match. John O’Hare scored the last of his six goals past us for the home side. Ged’s double century 2002 - We were held at home by Newcastle United to a 2-2 draw in the 200th match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge. Ex-United player Dietmar Hamann struck before Michael Owen converted a penalty. However, late goals from Gary Speed and one of Alan Shearer’s eight past us levelled the match. 1953 - We also faced the Geordies, leaving St. James’ Park on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline, with the legendary Jackie Milburn and Vic Keeble adding to the last two of Robert Mitchell’s eight strikes against the reds. Syd’s last 1936 – We were trounced 6-2 at Portsmouth with Alf Hanson and Berry Nieuwenhuys netting our goals as inside-left Syd Roberts played his 62nd and final reds game. Fred Worrall scored one of his four goals against the reds, Jack Weddle struck the last of his five, Cliff Parker bagged two of his five and Billy Bagley also scored twice. Starting out with a point 1901 - We kicked off our season with a goalless draw at Small Heath, who were later to become known as Birmingham City. Michael on the mark again 2000 - Michael Owen scored England’s equaliser against World Champions France in their friendly encounter at the Stade de France, having come on as a substitute. Kevin Keegan was in charge of a side that also featured ex-red Steve McManaman, while Nick Barmby was winning his first cap as a reds player. Future red Nicolas Anelka appeared for the home side. The same day, Sami Hyypiä won his 34th cap in Finland’s 2-1 home defeat of Albania in a World Cup qualifier, with future red Jari Litmanen on the scoresheet. Sebastián Coates won his first cap as a red as Uruguay beat Ukraine 3-2 in Karkov, while future red Dejan Lovren struck his first goal for Croatia in their 3-1 qualifying win in Malta. Robbie Keane won his first cap as an LA Galaxy player as the Republic of Ireland shared a goalless draw with Slovakia in Dublin, with Yossi Benayoun playing for Israel for the first time while on loan at Arsenal in their 1-0 defeat by Greece in Tel-Aviv. Alou Diarra won his first cap as an Olympique de Marseille player as France won 2-1 in Albania. Dirk Kuyt scored as the Netherlands trounced San Marino 11-0 in Eindhoven, with future red Gini Wijnaldum netting on his debut and future reds coach John Heitinga bagging his seventh and final goal for his country, while Pepe Reina, Martin Škrtel, Luis Suárez, future reds Ragnar Klavan, Simon Mignolet and James Milner, and ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa, Milan Jovanović, Javier Mascherano, Nikolay Mihaylov, Daniel Sjölund, Fernando Torres and John Toshack all also represented their countries. Alberto in action 2002 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Turkey. 2005 – He featured for the Under-21’s in their European Championships qualifier against Scotland in Motherwell that ended 2-2 with three players sent off in total. The match was forfeited by the home side and recorded as a 3-0 victory to Italy. Also in international action that day were Scott Carson, Michael Nardiello, John Welsh and future reds Glen Johnson, Nikolay Mihaylov and James Milner. 2011 – Aquilani won his first cap while on loan with AC Milan as Italy won a Euro 2012 qualifier 1-0 in the Faroe Islands, with future red Mario Balotelli also in action. 2012 – Sheyi Ojo and Jerome Sinclair played for England Under-17’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Portugal in Burton. Also on the move 1938 – Scottish centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw signed for South Liverpool after four goals in 291 appearances since signing from Bury for £8,000 in January 1930. He was only with South Liverpool for three days while the reds negotiated his £600 transfer to Third Lanark. 1955 – Future reds centre-forward Dave Hickson signed for Aston Villa from Everton for £17,500, netting just once in twelve games before moving to Huddersfield Town for £16,000 two months later. 2011 – Ex-reds defender Stephen Wright signed for Hartlepool United, featuring eleven times for the Monkey Hangers. 2023 – Gini Wijnaldum signed for Al-Ettifaq. He struck seven times in 31 games in his first campaign in Saudi Arabia. Other reds games 1980 – We thumped Bradford City 4-0 in a League Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield on our way to claiming the trophy for the first time. Kenny Dalglish struck twice, with Ray Kennedy and David Johnson also scoring. 1967 – Tony Hateley and Roger Hunt struck as we won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion. 1964 – We came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 in L4. Peter Thompson and Tommy Smith were both on the scoresheet. 1933 – We beat Sheffield United 3-2 at Anfield. Sam English added to a Gordon Hodgson brace after Peter Spooner had given the Blades an early lead. Jimmy Dunne bagged one of his eleven goals past us late on after Mick Killourhy had sent a spot-kick wide. Also in international action 1995 – Robbie Fowler played for England Under-21’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Portugal. 1998 – Future reds Markus Babbel and Stéphane Henchoz both played in senior international friendlies, with Switzerland drawing 1-1 with FR Yugoslavia in Nis and Germany winning 2-1 in Malta. -
Happy birthday Marks 1957 - Mark Lawrenson was born in Preston. He joined us for a then-record fee of £900,000 from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1981, going on to make 356 appearances, netting eighteen times while helping us to win four League titles, one European Cup, one FA Cup, three League Cups, the FA Charity Shield and Screen Sport Super Cup in his time at Anfield, before taking over as Oxford United boss in March 1988. 1964 - Mark Everton Walters was born in Birmingham. The most famous of his 124 games in a red shirt came when he inspired a UEFA Cup comeback against Auxerre in 1991, as he remained on the bench for both the 1992 FA Cup Final and League Cup Final in 1995. He also scored the crucial second goal in our defeat of Manchester United that handed the title to Leeds United in April 1992, one of his nineteen reds strikes after signing from Rangers for £1.25m in August 1991. He left Anfield to join Southampton on a free transfer in January 1996. 1867 - David Ashworth was born in Poulton-le-Fylde. He was appointed as reds boss in December 1919. He had previously guided Oldham Athletic from non-League into the top flight, to whom he returned in December 1922 with the reds en route to retaining the League title he had led them to the previous season. 1948 – Full-back Stuart Mason was born in Whitchurch, Shropshire. He signed with left-back Peter Wall from Wrexham for a combined £35,000, never managing to make the first team. He went on to make over a century of League appearances for both Wrexham and Chester. More arrivals 2014 – Kirkby-born forward Rickie Lambert signed from Southampton for an initial £4m, although he only managed to strike three times in 36 outings across his one season with the reds, with only twelve of these being starts. He moved on to West Bromwich Albion in July 2015. 1997 - Attacking midfielder Øyvind Leonhardsen signed from Wimbledon for £3.5m. He stayed at Anfield for two years, making 49 appearances, many in an uncomfortable left-sided role. He scored seven times before being sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £3m in August 1999. 1923 – Inside-forward Billy McDevitt signed from Swansea Town, being converted into a centre-half, but played just four times before moving on to Exeter City for a club record fee in May 1925. Six farewells 2003 - Pegguy Arphexad, Patrik Berger, Bernard Diomède, Vegard Heggem, Stephen McNulty and Mark Peers were all released by the club. Heggem had netted three times in a total of 65 reds games, but injury brought his career to an end, while Berger had struck 35 goals in 196 appearances. Back in black 1936 - We wore a black kit as we beat Romanian side Ripensia Timisoara 2-1 in a friendly as Alf Hanson netted in his third consecutive game of our Eastern European tour, with Syd Roberts also on target. 1939 - We thumped a Swedish Combination side 6-0. Phil Taylor bagged a treble, with Berry Nieuwenhuys adding a brace and Harry Eastham also on target. Reds in the World Cup 2002 - England drew their opening World Cup match with Sweden 1-1 in Saitama. Michael Owen and Emile Heskey both played the full ninety minutes, with Owen ending the game as captain after David Beckham’s substitution, and future red Joe Cole also featuring. Meanwhile, future red Fernando Morientes came off the bench as Spain beat Slovenia 3-1 in Gwangju. Double trebles 1946 - Jack Balmer scored four goals and Willie Fagan bagged a hat-trick as we thumped Chicago Maroons 9-3 in a friendly at Soldier Field. Phil Taylor and Bob Priday also scored. Rafa stays on 2006 - Rafael Benítez signed a new four-year contract, after continued speculation linking him with a return to his native land to take over at Real Madrid. He led us to the European Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield during his six seasons as we won 194 of his 350 games as Manager. Derby disappointment 1941 - We only got on the scoresheet through a Jones own goal as we lost a Wartime League derby 3-1 at Goodison Park. Other departures 2007 - It was announced that Joint Chief Scout Frank McParland would take over as General Manager at Bolton Wanderers, joining Sammy Lee there, who had recently taken over as Manager. 1910 - Inside-left Bert Goode signed for Wrexham. He had struck once in seven reds outings after signing from his hometown club Chester in May 1908. He scored 136 goals in 276 games across three spells at the Racecourse Ground, being remembered as one of their greatest ever strikers. Dan’s debut 2005 - Daniel Agger made his senior international debut as Denmark beat Finland 1-0 in a friendly in Tampere, with fellow future red Christian Poulsen also featuring. Ex-red Jari Litmanen skippered a side that also included Sami Hyypiä, while John Welsh and future red James Milner played for England Under-20’s as they beat Tunisia 2-0 in the Toulon Tournament. 2001 - Robbie Keane won his first cap after his permanent move to Leeds United in the Republic of Ireland’s 1-1 qualifying draw with Portugal. Conor Bradley, Kostas Tsimikas, future reds Wataru Endō and Darwin Núñez, and ex-reds Sebastián Coates, Nikolay Mihaylov and Xherdan Shaqiri also played for their countries. International reds on the scoresheet 2004 - Milan Baroš came off the bench to score as the Czech Republic beat Bulgaria 2-1 in a friendly in Prague. Vladimír Šmicer also featured, while Stéphane Henchoz and Dietmar Hamann faced each other in a friendly on the same day that Germany won 2-0, with future red Javier Mascherano also in international action that day. 2007 - John Arne Riise struck in injury time as Norway thumped Malta 4-0 in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Oslo. 2006 - Harry Kewell grabbed a brace as Australia beat Dutch side VV Kloetinge in a friendly, with futre reds loanee Nuri Şahin also in international action. 1982 - Ian Rush nabbed the only goal of the game as Wales beat France in a friendly in Toulouse. Ex-red Joey Jones also played. 1969 - Ex-red Tony Hateley scored in the second of all seven games of an FA Tour, bagging four as England trounced New Zealand 7-1 in Wellington. He netted a total of seventeen goals on the tour. 1963 - Roger Hunt netted for England as they beat East Germany 2-1 in a friendly in Leipzig. Ex-reserves for their countries 1993 - Former reserves midfielder Jim Magilton netted his fourth and final Northern Ireland goal as an Oxford United player as they won a World Cup qualifier in Latvia 2-1. Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Ronnie Rosenthal and future reds Nigel Clough and Øyvind Leonhardsen also appeared in internationals that day. 1992 - Magilton also played in a friendly as they drew 1-1 in Germany, who included future red Karl-Heinz Riedle. 1985 - Kevin Sheedy was on target as the Republic of Ireland beat Switzerland 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Lansdowne Road. Robbie signs on 1992 - Robbie Fowler signed as a professional. The ‘Toxteth terror’ went on to bag 171 goals in 330 reds games in his first spell with the club, gaining UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cup winners’ medals during his reds career, and struck a further twelve times in 39 games second time around to become our fifth top all-time goalscorer, before moving on to Cardiff City in July 2007. 2019 – He was appointed Head Coach of Brisbane Roar, leading them to eleven wins in 24 games before stepping down during the COVID-19 pandemic. 2002 – Forward Mark Smyth signed as a professional. Brothers in arms 1938 - Our home League game with Bolton Wanderers brought the unusual sight of the two teams being captained by brothers - the reds by forward Alf Hanson, and Bolton by goalkeeper Stan. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime, and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals, appearing 218 times and notching five times. He was sold to Coventry City for £240,000 in August 1974. 1912 - Centre-half Walter Wadsworth signed from Ormskirk as an amateur. He went on to net eight times in 242 reds games, being joined by his brother, outside-right Harold, after the First World War. Many happy returns Two former midfielders share a birthday today. 1972 - Steve McManaman was born in Kirkdale. Shaggy struck 66 times in 364 reds games, helping us to the FA Cup in 1992 and the Coca-Cola Cup three years later. He joined Real Madrid on a Bosman free transfer in July 1999. 1974 - Nick Barmby was born in Hull. He arrived in a controversial £6m switch across Stanley Park in July 2000 and netted eight goals in 58 games, including four in our successful UEFA Cup campaign in 2001, before being moved on to Leeds United after just two years at Anfield. 1888 - Winger Jackie Sheldon was born in Clay Cross. He grabbed twenty goals in 147 reds games after joining from Manchester United in November 1913, playing in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. He retired in 1922 after breaking his leg, with his name forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915. Michael’s bow 1998 - Michael Owen made his senior England debut in a 2-0 defeat by Chile at Wembley, becoming England’s youngest international of the century. Clubmate Paul Ince also featured. Mixed fortunes against the Baggies 1905 – We won 2-0 in a Second Division game at West Bromwich Albion, thanks to goals from Sam Raybould and Jack Parkinson. 2013 – We lost 2-0 at Anfield, with Philippe Coutinho making his reds bow from the bench. Record gates 2006 - Wigan Athletic attracted their then record attendance of 25,023 as a Sami Hyypiä strike was enough to hand us victory at the JJB Stadium, our first ever game away to the Latics. 1939 - 61,315 paid to see Wolverhampton Wanderers thump us 4-1 in the FA Cup Sixth Round, still their record crowd. Willie Fagan netted our consolation from the spot as Dennis Westcott struck one of his nine goals against the reds and Dickie Dorsett bagged the first of his four, with Stan Burton and Alex McIntosh also on target. South African keeper Dirk Kemp was making his thirtieth and last appearance for the reds. Sub at the double 1970 - Alun Evans bagged a brace as we won our FA Cup Fifth Round replay 2-0 at Leicester City, so becoming our first ever goalscoring substitute in the competition. He had replaced Peter Thompson after just 21 minutes. Red beginnings 1904 – Right-half Bobby Robinson signed from his hometown club Sunderland for £500. He was top scorer as we won the Second Division title the following season, also helping us claim the First Division championship in 1906. During the latter stages of his time with the reds, he moved into the half-back line but still bagged a total of 65 goals in 271 games, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in May 1913. 1928 - Right-half Tom Morrison made his reds bow as we lost 1-0 at Portsmouth. He went on to make 254 reds appearances. 2022 - Midfielder Bobby Clark signed pro terms with the reds, so far making seven first-team appearances. Final strikes 1967 – Right-half Gordon Milne nabbed the only goal of Aston Villa’s visit to L4, his eighteenth and final goal for the club. 1895 – Outside-left John Drummond grabbed his only reds goal as we beat Barnsley St. Peters 4-0 at Anfield in an FA Cup First Round replay that was staged after the Tykes protested at our 2-1 extra time victory in the first match. Outside-left Hugh McQueen scored his eighteenth and final reds goal with Harry Bradshaw and Malcolm McVean also netting in a game played unusually for the times on a Monday. However, we went out to Nottingham Forest at the next stage. On our way to Wembley 1950 - We won 2-1 at Stockport County in an FA Cup Fifth Round tie, when Willie Fagan and Albert Stubbins were on target and Alex Herd bagged his eighth and last strike against the reds in the final minute. Robbie Keane won the first cap of his second spell as a Tottenham Hotspur player, bagging a brace including a penalty while skippering the Republic of Ireland to a 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat of Georgia at Croke Park in Dublin. Off Song in France 2003 - Rigobert Song won his first cap as a Racing Club de Lens player as Cameroon lost 3-0 to the Ivory Coast in a friendly in France. 1998 - He also played for his country as they drew 2-2 with Guinea in the African Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso, with fellow future red Titi Camara skippering Guinea. On the move 2011 – Roy Hodgson was appointed West Bromwich Albion boss, helping to keep them up in the Premiership. On the same day, reserves centre-half Daniel Ayala joined Derby County on loan, playing seventeen times for the Rams. 1994 - Jim Magilton joined Southampton from Oxford United for £600,000. He is a regular with the Under-18’s, also playing at left-back. Striking legends arrive 1987 - John Aldridge signed from Oxford United for £750,000. He helped us to win the League title in 1988 and the FA Cup the following season, bagging 63 goals in 104 games before moving to Spain to join Real Sociedad for £1.1m in September 1989, becoming their first non-Basque player. 2006 - Robbie Fowler re-signed on a free transfer from Manchester City after three years with the Blues. He grabbed twelve goals in 39 outings in this second spell, but was released after two seasons, signing on with Cardiff City in July 2007. 1920 – Centre-forward Dick Johnson joined the reds. He struck thirty times in 82 outings, including two hat-tricks, helping us to the League title in 1923 before leaving for Stoke in February 1925. He was noted for his overhead bicycle kicks. Mixed cup fortunes against the Latics 1962 – We beat Oldham Athletic 2-1 at Boundary Park in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie, with Ian St. John bagging a brace as centre-half Dick White played his 217th and last reds game. 2013 – We lost 3-2 there at the same stage as Luis Suárez skippered the side for the first time while left-back Jack Robinson played his eleventh and last reds game. Matt Smith opened the scoring for the League One outfit before Suárez equalised and then had a goal ruled out for offside. The Latics went 3-1 up with goals either side of half-time by Smith and Reece Wabara, to become the first side outside the top two divisions to score three FA Cup goals against the reds since Sc***horpe United in January 1956. Joe Allen pulled one back with his first reds strike and Steven Gerrard struck the crossbar in the final minute, but it was not enough. On the way to Cardiff 2001 - We won our FA Cup Fourth Round game 2-0 at Leeds United, with late goals from substitutes Nick Barmby and Emile Heskey. This was Barmby’s eighth and final reds goal. VAR the star 2018 – We lost an FA Cup Fourth Round tie 3-2 at Anfield to West Bromwich Albion, in a game with video technology at its heart. Jay Rodriguez bagged two of his four goals past us to date either side of a Roberto Firmino goal, with all three goals scored inside the first quarter of an hour. The Baggies had a goal disallowed by VAR, before Firmino missed a penalty that was awarded by the same technology, the first time a referee in an English game had used a touchline monitor to make a final decision. Joël Matip scored an own goal in first-half stoppage time, with Mohamed Salah on target after the break. Missing out on Wembley 2015 – We lost 1-0 at Chelsea after extra time in the second leg of our Capital One Cup Semi-final, to lose out 2-1 on aggregate as Branislav Ivanović headed in the winner. He’s scouse, he’s sound 2002 - We had another FA Cup Fourth Round tie, losing 1-0 at Arsenal with three players sent off. Martin Keown was the first to walk, for a challenge on Michael Owen. Goalscorer Dennis Bergkamp was red-carded for a tackle on Jamie Carragher, who was then himself dismissed for the infamous coin-throwing incident. George’s farewell 1951 – George Kay took charge of his final game as Manager as we lost 1-0 at Charlton Athletic, as he was then forced to retire due to illness, with Billy Kiernan netting the first of his five goals against the reds. He had led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1947, and the FA Cup Final three years later as we won only 142 of his 357 games in charge. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. Right-winger Jimmy Payne reached a century of reds appearances that day. Off goes Double Trigger 1999 - Jason McAteer was sold to Blackburn Rovers for £4m. He had bagged six goals in 139 reds games after arriving from Bolton Wanderers for £4.5m in September 1995. Happy birthday Mike 1965 - Ex-reserves forward Mike Newell was born in Liverpool. He never managed to break through to our first team, going on to enjoy a chequered career at clubs such as Everton, Leicester City, Luton Town, Birmingham City and Aberdeen. 1915 – Scottish left-half John Browning was born in Alexandria. He signed from Dunoon Athletic in March 1934, making just nineteen appearances before moving on to Southern League side Gillingham in August 1939. FA Cup firsts 1894 - We played our first ever game in the FA Cup proper, a 3-0 First Round win over Grimsby Town at Anfield. The Mariners received half the gate money and £100 as the game was switched from their Abbey Park stadium. Sam Widdowson of Nottingham refereed, who had invented shin guards twenty years earlier! Harry Bradshaw bagged a brace with Joe McQue also on target. We only got as far as the Third Round that year. 1934 - We hosted Tranmere Rovers in the Fourth Round, in a game that was originally due to be played at Prenton Park. 61,036 saw the game, our then record attendance. This was our first ever official meeting with Rovers, and we won 3-1 thanks to a brace from Sam English and a Berry Nieuwenhuys goal, but were knocked out by Bolton Wanderers at the next hurdle. Unfortunately, inside-left Syd Roberts was seriously injured in this match, not featuring for the first team for another eleven months. 1968 – Roger Hunt played his 400th reds game as we were held to a goalless draw by Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Dean Court. We won the replay, eventually bowing out to West Bromwich Albion in the Sixth Round. Double-Barrowed departure 1999 - Two ex-reds were released by Barrow. Mike Marsh had spent six months at Holker Street, and remained out of football until joining up with Jan Mølby at fellow Conference side Kidderminster Harriers ten months later. Mark Seagraves retired from playing on his departure from Barrow. A rare League win We have only won one of our six League matches on this day. 1923 - Harry Chambers and Dick Johnson netted in a 2-0 top-flight win over Middlesbrough at Anfield, a week after they had both also scored on Teesside. 1973 - Our most recent League match was a 2-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Kevin Keegan on target. Emlyn Hughes put through his own net, with John Richards grabbing one of his five goals against the reds as Bill Shankly took charge of the reds for the 700th time. Bowyer’s last 1912 - Forward Sam Bowyer made the last of his 48 reds appearances as we lost 1-0 at West Bromwich Albion in a top-flight encounter. Banging them in 1979 – We visited Bangor City for a friendly, due to the postponement of our FA Cup Third Round meeting with Blackburn Rovers. We won 4-1, despite two inches of snow on the pitch, thanks to a brace from Kenny Dalglish, David Fairclough goal and Terry McDermott penalty, all inside the first half. Moving on loan 1998 - Mark Kennedy joined fellow Premier League side Queens Park Rangers on loan. He netted twice in eight games while at Loftus Road, before returning to fight for a first-team berth at Anfield. 2008 - Milan Baroš joined Portsmouth on loan from Olympique Lyonnais, failing to score in sixteen outings but helping them to claim the FA Cup. 2009 – Centre-half Ragnar Klavan joined AZ Alkmaar on loan from Heracles Almelo, helping them to their first League title since 1981 before making the move permanent in the summer. He struck three times in 104 outings before moving on to Augsburg in July 2012. 2011 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Danny O’Donnell joined Stockport County on loan from Shrewsbury Town. He played seven times before signing on permanently at the end of the season. 2014 - Forward David N’Gog joined Swansea City on loan from Bolton Wanderers, failing to score in three appearances. Ex-Academy forward Marvin Pourié joined Zulte Waregem from F.C. København, scoring once in six League outings. 2017 – Midfielder Cameron Brannagan joined Fleetwood Town on a temporary basis, playing fourteen times for the Cod Army. On the same day, defender Joe Gomez signed a new contract with the reds. Youngsters in action 2009 – Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Ecuador in their final Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” group game in Venezuela, as they reached the final phase. 2004 - Zak Whitbread played his first game for the USA Under-23’s as they drew 2-2 with Mexican club side Tecos in an unofficial international. On the move 2005 - Jari Litmanen signed for Hansa Rostock on a free transfer from Finnish side Lahti. He struck once in thirteen games but could not prevent them from being relegated from the Bundesliga top flight. 2022 – Keeper Vítězslav Jaroš moved to Notts County from the reds for the rest of the season, playing fifteen times as they failed to make it through the National League Play-offs. Forward Joe Hardy joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle on loan from Accrington Stanley, netting once in eighteen outings. 2023 – Ex-reds defender Ki-Jana Hoever joined Stoke City on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, netting four times in seventeen games in his first spell with the Potters. On the same day, future reds Assistant Coach John Heitinga was appointed Head Coach of Ajax. He led them to fourteen wins in his 22 games in charge, before leaving after five months. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. Other birthdays 1961 - Former reserves forward Colin Russell was born in Liverpool. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. He left for Huddersfield Town in 1982. 1904 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was born in Coylton, Ayrshire. He signed from St. Mirren in February 1928 for £4,000 and struck four times in 254 reds games. He failed to win any honours during his spell at Anfield but had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren before joining the reds. He was a member of the Sunderland team that won the League title in 1936, having moved to Wearside in November 1935. Scouser Dennis Mortimer struck the Villains’ consolation. 1934 - We also visited Villa Park, when right-back Bob Done bagged his thirteenth and final reds goal with Syd Roberts also on target as we lost 3-2. Tom Waring struck two of his six goals against the reds, with Ronnie Dix nabbing the first of his four past us. Birth and death 1994 - Former reds right-half Sir Matt Busby died. He, of course, went on to far greater fame down the East Lancs Road, but in his time at Anfield he captained the reds, and struck three times in 122 first-team appearances before the Second World War, as well as another goal in 26 wartime outings. 1869 – Scottish left-back Duncan McLean was born in Renton. He made his reds bow in our very first game having remained when Everton departed Anfield. He bagged four goals in 82 games, helping us to the Second Division title before returning north of the border to join Edinburgh St. Bernard’s in October 1895, with whom he won two full international caps. Champions defeated 2007 - We beat Chelsea convincingly, 2-0, thanks to an early Dirk Kuyt strike and Jermaine Pennant’s first reds goal. This secured Rafael Benítez’s 56th win in his hundredth League game in charge, so equalling Bill Shankly’s record. This was also Jose Mourinho’s hundredth League match as Chelsea boss. Eden Hazard opened the scoring from the spot, one of his seven goals past us, with Raheem Sterling netting a second-half equaliser. A great start from Sam 1900 - Sam Raybould scored after thirty seconds, but we were eventually beaten 3-1 in the Goodison derby, as the Blues completed a League double. This was his first reds goal, while Jimmy Settle netted two of his eleven goals against the reds as Joe Blythe also scored. Red centurions 2010 – Lucas Leiva played his hundredth reds game as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Anfield, with a fans’ guard of honour greeting the team coach on its way into Anfield. Two-ton Andy 2022 – Andy Robertson played his 200th game for the reds as we won the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final 2-0 at Arsenal to reach the Final thanks to a Diogo Jota brace. Right-back Neco Williams featured for the 33rd and last time, with Thomas Partey sent off for the home side in the final minute. Marching on together 1996 - Gary Kelly was sent off for Leeds United for bringing down Rob Jones in the area with the score 1-0 at Anfield. He signed from Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña for £2.64m in January 2007, and featured 98 times across the defence, as well as notching two goals. He returned to his native Spain to sign for Real Madrid for £3.5m in July 2009. New signings 2000 - Markus Babbel signed a pre-contract agreement to join the reds from Bayern München that summer. He made just two first-team appearances while at Anfield, both from off the bench in the Worthington Cup, moving to Lillestrøm back in his native Norway in February 2002. 1915 – Scottish forward Alexander Smith was born in Buckie, Banffshire. He signed from Buckie Thistle for £150 in February 1937, but only played once for the reds. 1882 – Left-half Samuel Hignett was born in Liverpool. Moving on 2003 - Bernard Diomède joined AC Ajaccio on loan, two and a half years and just five appearances after signing from Auxerre for £3m. 2015 – Spanish midfielder Suso left Anfield to sign for AC Milan, after one goal in 21 reds games. On the same day, reserves right-back Connor Randall joined Shrewsbury Town on loan, although he only made one substitute appearance for the Shrews. 2018 – Serbian midfielder Marko Grujić joined Cardiff City on loan, netting once in fourteen outings as the Bluebirds secured promotion to the Premier League. 2022 - Jordon Ibe signed for Turkish side Adanaspor, although he left the club later that year having failed to make a senior appearance. Boss against boss 1942 - Future reds boss Don Welsh played as England beat Scotland 3-0 in a Wartime international at Wembley Stadium. Other reds games 1998 – We held Leicester City to a goalless draw at Filbert Street. 1981 – Terry McDermott netted the only goal of our trip to Norwich City. 1979 – We beat Southend United 3-0 in an FA Cup Third Round replay at Anfield. Jimmy Case struck before Kenny Dalglish finally scored after a thirteen-game drought. He signed from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for £9.75m in July 2014, netting fourteen times in 167 reds games before moving on to Juventus on a free transfer in June 2018. 1887 – Forward Jimmy Nicholl was born in Port Glasgow. He signed from Middlesbrough in January 1914, bagging fourteen goals in 59 outings before moving on to Wishaw Thistle in 1915. He played 232 games, notching fourteen times, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield and League Cup before returning to his former club in Denmark in August 2014. Happy Cup memories We have won all eleven of our FA Cup ties on this day. 1935 - We beat non-League Yeovil & Petters United 6-2 in front of a record crowd of 11,830 at Huish Park, despite scouser Tommy McNeil giving Yeovil the lead inside five minutes, and the score being level at the break, through a deflected Berry Nieuwenhuys strike. Gordon Hodgson and Syd Roberts both netted twice for the reds, to add to a goal from Dave Wright. Yeovil’s McNeil also ended the game with a brace. Hodgson’s first strike was our 200th in the competition, with Roberts’ being his thirteenth and last goal for the club. South for the first time 1955 - Centre-back Alex South made the first of his seven reds appearances as we won our FA Cup Third Round replay against Lincoln City at Anfield in extra time. John Evans bagged the only goal, having scored in the first game as well as being sent off. We made it to the Fifth Round before being knocked out by Huddersfield Town at Anfield. 1991 – Winger Jimmy Carter made his reds bow as a substitute for Ronnie Rosenthal in our goalless draw at Aston Villa as Kenny Dalglish took charge for the 300th time. Beating the Potters 1988 - Peter Beardsley netted the only goal of our FA Cup Third Round replay against Stoke City from just outside the area. 2014 – We triumphed 5-3 at the Britannia Stadium, our first League win there. Ryan Shawcross diverted an Aly Cissokho shot into his own net before Luis Suárez doubled our lead after half an hour. However, ex-reds Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam levelled the scores before the break, with the former netting one of his four strikes against the reds. Steven Gerrard converted a penalty with Suárez adding his second before Jon Walters bagged one of his seven goals past us. Daniel Sturridge came off the bench to complete the scoring late on. Beaten by the seaside 2011 – We lost 2-1 at Blackpool in our first trip there since August 1970. Heading off 1963 – Left-half Tommy Leishman left the reds to join Hibernian. He had arrived from St. Mirren for £10,000 in November 1949, helping us back to the First Division in 1962, bagging a total of seven goals in 118 reds games, including our first ever League Cup strike. 1966 - Inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter died. The Scottish international bagged twelve goals in 45 reds games after signing from Abercorn in 1899. 1985 – South African half-back Hugh Gerhardi committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. He signed from Johannesburg-based Thistle in August 1952 but only played six senior games before returning to his homeland after just one season. Gary Mac steps down 2004 - Gary McAllister resigned as Manager of Coventry City to care for his seriously ill wife Denise. He had been on compassionate leave after she suffered a setback in her battle against cancer, but then decided to quit permanently. Sadly, she passed away soon after. Alf off target 1938 - Outside-left Alf Hanson missed a penalty in the first half as we beat Third Division South outfit Crystal Palace 3-1 after extra time in our FA Cup Third Round replay at Anfield. Ernie Waldron gave the visitors the lead, before John Shafto sent the tie into extra time. The Eagles’ Nick Collins scored an own goal, before Willie Fagan converted a late penalty. Unfortunately, the reds were later forced to apologise by the FA after making some disparaging comments about Palace in the programme. We only made it as far as the Fifth Round that season, being knocked out by Huddersfield Town at Anfield, who went all the way to the Final. Stevie’s new deal 2012 – Steven Gerrard signed a new contract, tying him to the club until 2014. He eventually stayed until the summer of 2015. Reds trebles 1963 - Roger Hunt netted four as we thumped Stoke City 6-1 at Anfield to give Bill Shankly his hundredth victory as reds boss, in his 188th game in charge. Ian St. John and Alf Arrowsmith also scored in one of eight meetings with the Potters on this day in history. The scores were level at 1-1 at half-time, with five of our goals coming at the Anfield Road end in the second period. John Ritchie struck the first of his five goals against the reds. 1928 - Gordon Hodgson scored a hat-trick in his hundredth League game as we trounced Burnley 8-0 at Anfield. Happy birthdays 1878 - Centre-back Alex Raisbeck was born in Wallacestone, near Polmont in Stirlingshire. Birth and death 2006 – Future red Charlie Adam became a father to Jack. 2010 – Utility player Bill Jones died at the Countess of Chester Hospital. He signed from Hayfield St. Matthews in September 1938 and scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. His grandson Rob later represented the reds in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. -
Martin born 1984 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel was born in Handlová. The tough Slovakian signed from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m in January 2008 to become our most expensive defender to date. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. 2010 - He skippered the side for the first time as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Utrecht in our final UEFA Europa League group game. Dirk Kuyt played his fiftieth European game for the reds as the 37,800 crowd was boosted by free kids’ tickets. Forward Nathan Eccleston played his ninth and last reds game. Shaggy’s debut 1990 - Steve McManaman made his reds bow as we beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from John Barnes and Ian Rush, who was making his 300th appearance for the reds. He went on to make a total of 364 reds appearances, netting 66 times. Arnell’s treble 1956 - Alan Arnell bagged a treble as we won 3-0 at Bill Shankly’s Huddersfield Town in a Second Division fixture. Most recently 2013 – We secured our record win at White Hart Lane as we comprehensively thumped Tottenham Hotspur 5-0, despite being without skipper Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge. Captain for the day Luis Suárez bagged a brace, with Jon Flanagan netting his only reds goal. Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling also struck as Paulinho was sent off for the home side in the second half. Peter Crouch grabbed a brace with Steven Gerrard also on target. Rafael Benítez had heard of the death of his father in the build-up to the match but elected to stay in Japan. Winning in Belgium 1965 - We beat Standard de Liège 2-1 at their Stade Maurice Dufrasne in the European Cup Winners’ Cup to progress to the Second Round, 5-2 on aggregate. Roger Hunt and Ian St. John netted for the reds as we came from behind to win. Happy birthday Alf 1881 - Right-back Alf West was born in Nottingham. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield prior to the First World War, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. In comes Wilson 1897 - Wing-half Charlie Wilson signed from Stockport County on a free transfer. He bagged three goals in 91 reds games before becoming a Scout at Anfield in 1905, a role he held until the Second World War. The light went out 2002 - We suffered our fourth straight League defeat of the season as Milan Baroš’s strike was not enough to save us from a 2-1 defeat by Sunderland at the Stadium Of Light, despite Chris Kirkland’s penalty save from former Blue Gavin McCann, who had already scored, with Michael Proctor also on target. Sammy Lee won his second cap in this game, with ex-red Ray Clemence in goal. Joey Jones won his first cap as a Chelsea player, and his 48th in total, as Wales drew 4-4 with Yugoslavia in Titograd. On the move 2022 – Midfielder Michael Laffey signed pro terms with the reds, having arrived from Everton as an Under-10’s player. 2020 – It was announced that future reds boss Arne Slot would become Head Coach of Feyenoord the following July. The Belgian international signed from Aston Villa for £32.5m in July 2015, bagging ten goals in 42 outings and featuring in the UEFA Europa League Final in Basel. A humbling defeat 1991 - Third Division Peterborough United knocked us out of the League Cup as a single Garry Kimble goal, gifted by a blunder by Bruce Grobbelaar, gave them victory in our Fourth Round tie at London Road. Spud no longer the lucky omen 2003 - Bolton Wanderers knocked us out of the Carling Cup in a Fourth Round tie at Anfield, 3-2. Vladimír Šmicer and Danny Murphy both scored equalisers, but it was not enough. Danny’s goal was his fortieth reds strike, and his first in a game that we lost. Afterwards, Gérard Houllier fired a rare salvo at his underperforming players, “We let the fans and the club down and there’s no excuse! We didn’t deserve to go through tonight and we let ourselves down. First and last 2023 – We beat Fulham by a single goal in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield, despite being 3-2 down with less than three minutes of normal time remaining. We took the lead when a Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick bounced off the crossbar and keeper Bernd Leno for an own goal. Ex-red Harry Wilson levelled before Alexis Mac Allister struck his first goal for the club, a long-range special. However, Kenny Tete equalised in first-half stoppage time. Bobby De Cordova-Reid headed the Cottagers into the lead with ten minutes on the clock. There was still time for Wataru Endō and Trent Alexander-Arnold to both score from long range to complete the turnaround. Sadly, Joël Matip had to go off injured in what was to be his final outing for the club. Ex-reds loaned out 1999 - Gary Ablett joined Second Division Wycombe Wanderers on loan from Birmingham City. He made four appearances while at the Causeway Stadium. On the same day, ex-reserves forward John Durnin temporarily joined Third Division Carlisle United from Portsmouth. He scored once in seven first-team outings, and later signed permanently for the Cumbrians. Award winners 2008 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year for the seventh time in ten years. 2018 - Mohamed Salah was named as the Football Supporters' Association Men's Player of the Year for the first time, winning it again in 2021 and 2023. On the same day, Salah was voted sixth in the Ballon d'Or, with ex-red Luis Suárez coming thirteenth, Roberto Firmino joint nineteenth, Sadio Mané equal 22nd and Alisson Becker joint 25th. Management moves 2001 - Bruce Grobbelaar took over as coach of struggling South African top flight side Hellenic. He remained in the post for just five months. 2012 - Markus Babbel was sacked as Manager of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, having been in charge for just ten months. Igor returns home 2007 - Igor Bišćan re-signed for Dinamo Zagreb, having been released by Panathinaikos. He became club captain, netting eight times in 104 games as they dominated Croatian football, retiring in April 2012. Happy birthday Gary 1965 - Gary Ablett was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his eighteenth birthday, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. He sadly died in January 2012, aged just 46. 1993 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux was born in Camden, north London. He left Tottenham Hotspur to join the reds in 2014, moving on to Swindon Town in July 2016 after a successful loan spell there. Red farewells 1977 - John Toshack made his 246th and final reds appearance in a 1-1 draw with Bristol City, setting up the goal for Kenny Dalglish. 1898 – Left-back Tom Wilkie played his 64th and last game for the club as we lost 3-0 at Bury as Jimmy Settle struck two of his eleven goals past us, with Michael Kelly also on target. This Premiership game at Anfield ended in a 1-1 draw with the returning Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres both limping out of the action. Cesc Fàbregas struck the late equaliser. Happy birthday Milan 1981 - Milan Baroš was born in Valašské Meziříčí in Czechoslovakia. He struck 27 times in 108 reds games after signing from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m in July 2001. He moved to Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005, having helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League and the League Cup. 1873 – Inside-forward Frank Becton was born in Preston. The England international signed from his hometown club for £200 in March 1895, notching 42 times in 86 games before joining Sheffield United in October 1898. 1876 – Left-back John Glover was born in West Bromwich. He arrived from New Brompton in June 1900 for £350, failing to score in 59 outings before joining Small Heath in October 1903, having been caught accepting a bribe to sign for Portsmouth. Latest trip across the park 2012 – We led 2-0 at Goodison after Leighton Baines deflected in a Luis Suárez strike before Suárez himself netted, celebrating the first goal by theatrically diving in front of David Moyes, who had accused him of simulation before the game. Mixed fortunes against the Gunners 1893 - We recorded our best ever win over the Gunners, thumping Woolwich Arsenal 5-0 at their Manor Ground stadium. Marvin Emnes gave the visitors the lead, but the final few minutes brought an equaliser from Mario Balotelli, Federico Fernández was dismissed for the Swans and then Dejan Lovren headed in the winner with his first goal for the club. The sending off was later rescinded. 2015 – Connor Randall made his reds bow at right-back as we beat Bournemouth 1-0 in a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield on our way to Wembley. Nathaniel Clyne grabbed his first goal for the club to secure Jürgen Klopp’s first win in charge. Most recently 2017 - Mohamed Salah had a penalty saved as the first half of our Anfield encounter with Huddersfield Town ended goalless. However, Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Gini Wijnaldum all scored after the break to secure a 3-0 victory. On the same day, forward Rhian Brewster netted while winning his 23rd and last cap for England Under-17’s as they won their World Cup Final 5-2 against Spain in India, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. He only played thirteen reds games after signing from South Liverpool in 1940 and joined Port Vale, who were managed by ex-red Gordon Hodgson, for £10,000 in July 1948, the record fee we had received to date. Carra went on to claim 27 in total, which was still an England record until he was overtaken by Scott Carson, and more recently by James Milner who eventually made 46 appearances. 1996 - David Thompson won his first cap at Under-21’s level as a substitute in England’s goalless draw with Poland at Molineux. Future red Emile Heskey was in the starting eleven. Bowing out 1955 - Billy Liddell won his 29th and final cap as Scotland beat Northern Ireland 2-1 at Windsor Park in Belfast. Right-half Francis Checkland played his fifth and final reds game that day, with Preston’s late equaliser coming from the spot from future red Archie Rawlings. 1949 – Full-back Ray Lambert bagged the first of his two reds goals, scoring from the spot in our 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne also netting. Jimmy’s treble 1930 – Jimmy Smith scored a hat-trick as we thumped Everton 5-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson and Tom Bradshaw also scoring. Geoff Strong scored inside the first minute, but Allan Clarke bagged the first two of his seven goals against us, with Ian St. John completing the scoring before the break. 1960 – We won a Second Division encounter 2-1 at Lincoln City as Roger Hunt nabbed a brace. 1904 – We beat Barnsley 2-0 in a Second Division fixture at Oakwell. Bobby Robinson had a penalty saved but converted the rebound, with John Carlin also on target. In opposition 1938 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won his only cap for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Windsor Park. Andy Beattie, who guested for the reds during the war and later spent some time on our backroom staff, and Bill Shankly were both on the winning side. Winning trophies We have twice won major honours on this day in our history. 1974 - We ‘undressed’ Newcastle United 3-0 at Wembley to win our second FA Cup, thanks to a brace from Kevin Keegan and a Steve Heighway goal. Future reds Alan Kennedy and Terry McDermott both played for United. 1976 - We clinched our ninth League title, Bob Paisley’s first as Manager, as we won 3-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. We only needed a point, while Wolves had to win to stay up. Kevin Keegan, John Toshack and Ray Kennedy all scored in the last quarter of an hour after Steve Kindon had put Wolves ahead. 1988 – The PFA announced that the reds were the winners of the inaugural Fair Play trophy. European disappointment 1965 - We played in our first European Semi-final, defeating European Cup holders Internazionale 3-1 in the first leg at Anfield, with the recently-won FA Cup being paraded around the ground prior to kick off. Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan and Ian St. John all scored, with a Chris Lawler strike ruled off for a debatable offside. The crowd crowed “Oh Inter 1-2-3, go back to Italy!” Unfortunately, Inter’s away goal, scored by Alessandro Mazzola, would eventually prove crucial, as would the referee’s intervention in the San Siro. Welsh out 1956 – Don Welsh was sacked as reds boss. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, taking charge at Anfield for 232 games after being appointed in March 1951. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be dismissed, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land. Yet another win 2019 – We won 3-2 at Rafael Benítez’s Newcastle United with Divock Origi’s late header ensuring the title race with Manchester City went down to the last day of the campaign. Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring, with Christian Atsu equalising before Mohamed Salah put us back in front before half an hour had elapsed. Salomón Rondón drew the home side level again after the break, with Salah having to be taken off with an injury that ensured he missed the upcoming critical UEFA Champions League Semi-final second leg meeting with Barcelona. Nando again 2008 - Fernando Torres scored in his eighth consecutive home League game, equalling Roger Hunt’s club record as we beat Manchester City 1-0. This was his 32nd goal of the season. 1929 - We also hosted Manchester City, with Gordon Hodgson netting in a 1-1 draw, our final game of a season in which we finished fifth, his thirtieth League strike of the season. Tommy Johnson netted one of his eight goals against the reds. Sami off 2009 – Centre-back Sami Hyypiä agreed to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen when his contract expired at the end of the season. The mighty Finn played 464 reds games, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He later took over as Team Manager at the BayArena for two years. In and out 1896 - Inside-forward Willie Michael signed from Heart Of Midlothian, scoring five times in 23 reds games before, returning to Tynecastle in April 1897. 1898 – Forward Joe Lumsden left the reds to join Glossop North End. He had struck twice in eight outings since arriving from Burton Wanderers in June 1897. 1910 - Right-back Alf West rejoined the reds from Reading. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. Happy birthday Igor 1978 - Igor Bišcan was born in Zagreb. The big Croat played 118 reds games, netting three times as he helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001, and the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role on the road to Istanbul, moving on to Panathinaikos in July 2005. On the same day, eventual champions Nottingham Forest held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Facing the Blues 1991 - We came from two goals down to level but eventually lost 4-2 at Chelsea. Young winger Jimmy Carter came off the bench and was later himself substituted by Ronnie Rosenthal. David Speedie and Rosenthal got on the scoresheet, while Gary Gillespie played his 214th and last reds game. Kerry Dixon netted two of his seven strikes past us, with Dennis Wise converting a penalty, one of his four goals against the reds, and Gordon Durie also on target with the last of his five. Ex-red Bobby Campbell resigned as Blues boss three days later. 1985 - We also faced the Blues in the First Division, this time winning at Anfield by the odd goal in seven. Steve Nicol nabbed a brace while Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush also struck. Future red Nigel Spackman scored from the spot for the visitors, with Kerry Dixon and Gordon Davies also on target. Youngest ever 2019 – Future red Harvey Elliott became the youngest ever player in the Premier League in Fulham’s 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers, aged just sixteen years and thirty days. Managerial comings and goings 1977 - Ian St. John was sacked as Manager of Portsmouth. He had been in charge for three seasons, leading them to just 31 victories in 124 games in charge as they were relegated into the old Third Division, and then narrowly escaped a further descent to the League basement. 2001 - Ex-reds reserve Dave Watson became Tranmere Rovers Manager. He won 22 of his 55 games as they steadied in the Second Division. 2018 - Steven Gerrard was appointed as Manager of Rangers, taking over the following month, with Gary McAllister being named as his future Assistant at the same time. The end of the road for Liddell 1940 - Billy Liddell’s first professional contract that he had signed the previous April expired. He went on to strike 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. Farewell to the lower reaches 1962 - We played our last ever Second Division game, going down 4-2 at Swansea Town in a game postponed from a month earlier due to a smallpox outbreak in South Wales. Ian St. John and Roger Hunt grabbed our goals. Colin Webster bagged a brace for the Swans, with Brayley Reynolds netting the last of his seven strikes past us and Mel Nurse also on target. King Kenny starts and ends 1967 - Kenny Dalglish signed as an amateur for Celtic, turning professional the following year. He helped them to claim four League titles, four Scottish Cups and the Scottish League Cup, striking 167 times in 269 games. 1986 – His testimonial match took place at Hampden Park. Tommy Docherty’s side of Anglos beat Alex Ferguson’s home-based Scots 5-2 with Kenny on target for both sides! European joy 1999 - Pepe Reina played for Spain Under-16’s as they reached the Final of the European Championships in the Czech Republic by seeing off Germany 4-0 in their Semi-final encounter. Comeback 1968 - Bobby Graham came on for Tony Hateley as we were 1-0 down at Leeds United to one of Mick Jones’s seven goals past us. Chris Lawler drew us level with six minutes remaining, with Graham bagging the winner a minute later. Keeper Tommy Lawrence played his 300th reds game, with this result helping us to finish the season in third, one place above Leeds. Wins in Bristol We twice played Bristol Rovers at their Memorial Ground in consecutive years in the 1930’s, for the Bristol Hospitals Lord Mayor’s Cup. 1936 - The game ended 5-5 with Phil Taylor bagging a brace to add to goals from Syd Roberts, Fred Howe and Alf Hanson, with the trophy being shared. 1937 - We won 2-1, with Berry Nieuwenhuys on target twice. Rushie the skipper 1987 - Ian Rush captained the reds in his last home game before he moved to Juventus. He struck the only goal of the game against Watford. Jack’s farewell 1935 – Tommy Johnson and Alf Hanson struck to put us two goals ahead against Sunderland in L4. However, Bobby Gurney grabbed one of his sixteen strikes past us, with George Goddard also scoring as the game ended 2-2 in L4 as we ended the season in seventh with left-back Jack Tennant appearing for the 42nd and final time. Sweet! 1992 – Ahead of the FA Cup Final, Candy was announced as the club’s first ever permanent match sponsor, for the 1992/93 season. Wrong shaped ball 1997 - A Super League match between St. Helens and Castleford Tigers was staged at Anfield, with Saints winning 42-16 in front of 12,329. Scots on target in friendlies 1960 - Future red Ian St. John netted his first goal for Scotland while winning his fifth cap, as they lost 3-2 at home to Poland. The Scots were managed by Andy Beattie, who had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1955 - Billy Liddell struck while winning his 25th cap as Portugal lost 3-0 at Hampden Park. Kozma twice 1988 – Future red István Kozma played for Hungary as they beat Iceland 3-0 in a friendly in Budapest. 1994 – Kozma won his first cap in his second spell as an Újpest player as they lost a friendly 3-2 in Poland. On the move 2023 – Left-back Luke Chambers signed a new contract. He has so far made four senior reds appearances. 2020 – Keeper Loris Karius terminated his two-year loan contract with Beşiktaş JK a year early, due to a dispute over wages. 2016 – Ex-reds midfielder Joe Cole signed for Tampa Bay Rowdies, netting nine times in 26 outings in his first campaign. 2007 - Real Club Recreativo de Huelva announced that they would sign Florent Sinama-Pongolle for €4m, whom he had joined on loan the previous August. He struck 22 times in 69 outings for the Andalusian side before moving to Club Atlético de Madrid in July 2008. 2002 - Former reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed for Serie A side Lecce from Ternana on a free transfer. Cyril’s century 1949 – Derby County triumphed 3-0 at the Baseball Ground. John Morris scored two of his seven goals past us, with Billy Steel also on the scoresheet with one of his four. Heading to finals 2005 - Steven Gerrard grabbed the only goal of our Carling Cup Semi-final second leg at Watford, with Igor Bišcan playing his hundredth reds game. Florent Sinama-Pongolle came on as a substitute for Milan Baroš and was later himself substituted just four minutes later having damaged a cartilage in his knee. 2012 – We drew 2-2 with Manchester City in the second leg of our Carling Cup Semi-final at Anfield. Nigel de Jong levelled the tie on aggregate after half an hour before Steven Gerrard scored from the spot. Edin Džeko struck before Craig Bellamy netted the crucial goal. Legend signs on 1910 - Left-back Donald McKinlay signed from Newton Villa in Glasgow. He made 434 appearances across two decades, and scored 34 times, including one struck spectacularly from ten yards inside his own half at West Ham United in January 1926! He skippered us to two League titles, and also played in our first FA Cup Final, in 1914. He returned to the amateur game in July 1929 with Prescot Cables. 1930 – Scottish centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw signed from Bury for £8,000. He struck four times in 291 appearances at centre-half. He returned to his native land in September 1938, joining Third Lanark. Derby despair 2009 – We were held to a 1-1 draw in our FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield, after being drawn against Everton in the competition for the sixteenth time, more than any other club. Joleon Lescott opened the scoring with Steven Gerrard bagging our equaliser. Kirks out again 2003 - Chris Kirkland suffered a posterior knee ligament injury in our goalless FA Cup Fourth Round draw at Crystal Palace that kept him out of the side for nine months. Worse was to follow, as we lost the Anfield replay. First and lasts 1896 - Winger Ben Bull scored on his only reds appearance as we thumped Lincoln City 6-1 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Fred Geary, Frank Becton and George Allan were also on target, with Jimmy Ross netting a brace. Ben Gillespie struck the first of his six goals against us, with the other five coming with Manchester City. 1939 – Forward Ron Jones played his fifth and last reds game as we lost 2-1 to Bolton Wanderers in the top flight at Anfield, with Willie Fagan nabbing our consolation. George Hunt struck the last of his five goals past us before Thomas Sinclair put the visitors two ahead. 1964 – Full-back Bobby Thomson appeared for the eighth and last time as we shared a goalless draw with Port Vale in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. We won the replay but went out to Swansea Town in the Sixth Round. Winning on the south coast 2014 - We beat Bournemouth 2-0 in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie at the Goldsands Stadium, thanks to goals from Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge, with Luis Suárez setting them both up. This was Moses’ second and last reds goal. Off on loan 1985 - Gary Ablett joined Derby County on loan. He made eight appearances before returning to break through into the first team at Anfield. 2008 - Ex-reserves forward John Miles joined MK Dons on loan from Accrington Stanley, failing to score in twelve outings. FA Cup wins Apart from the Bristol City debacle and the games at Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, we have played six other FA Cup ties on this day, all at Anfield, winning three and losing once. 1902 - Tommy Robertson had a penalty saved by keeper George Kitchen, but scored the rebound, his 35th and final goal for the club. John ‘Sailor’ Hunter also scored as we twice led but drew 2-2 with Everton, our first meeting in the competition, with Jack Sharp bagging a late equaliser for the Blues after Sandy Young had nabbed one of his twelve goals against us. Grimsby Town, Northampton Town and Burnley are the teams who have been knocked out of the cup at Anfield on this day over the years, all in the Fourth Round. 1958 - We won our first ever meeting with Northampton 3-1, thanks to goals from Billy Liddell, Louis Bimpson and a Ben Collins own goal with strange weather conditions causing the postponement of Everton’s cup tie across the park! 1947 - Albert Stubbins and Cyril Done struck as we beat Grimsby 2-0, a year in which we made it as far as the Semi-final, losing out to Burnley. 1969 - We beat Burnley 2-1 thanks to a Tommy Smith penalty and an Emlyn Hughes pile-driver, with the Clarets nearly securing a replay after Frank Casper’s header struck the bar. Leicester City knocked us out at the next hurdle, after a replay. On our way to Wembley 1984 - We won a League Cup Fifth Round replay at home to Sheffield Wednesday as we edged towards a fourth straight triumph in the competition. Ian Rush netted twice as we won 3-0 with Michael Robinson also on target, while Craig Johnston reached a century of reds appearances. 2017 – We failed at the final hurdle as Southampton won the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final at Anfield, to progress 2-0 on aggregate. Shane Long struck the only goal in injury time, one of his four goals past us to date. Joe’s half century 1908 – Forward Joe Hewitt bagged his fiftieth reds goal in our 1-1 top-flight draw at Birmingham City, with Arthur Mounteney netting the last of his five goals against the reds. Beaten 1936 - We lost an FA Cup Fourth Round encounter at Anfield 2-0 to Arsenal, with the Gunners going on to lift the trophy for the second time that season. Ray Bowden nabbed the last of his four goals against us, with Joe Hulme netting the last of his ten. A minute’s silence was observed before kick off in honour of the late King George V. Reds boss George Patterson missed the game due to being on a fruitless transfer mission to Sunderland. Jari the centurion 2006 - Ex-red Jari Litmanen won his hundredth cap as Roy Hodgson’s Finland lost 1-0 to South Korea in a tournament game in Saudi Arabia. On the same day, Rigobert Song played his 101st game for Cameroon in their 2-0 defeat of Togo in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Cairo. Beating the Mancs 1930 - Harry Race grabbed his eighteenth and last goal as we beat Manchester United 1-0 in a First Division encounter at Anfield, with centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw and half-back Tommy Gardner both making their reds bows. 1919 - Robert Matthews netted as we were held to a draw in a Wartime League match in L4. Harold’s treble 1933 – Centre-forward Harold Barton scored a hat-trick as we beat SK Rapid Wien 5-2 in a friendly at Anfield. Syd Roberts and Alf Hanson also netted. Ryan departs 2011 - Ryan Babel was sold to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for £6m. He signed from Ajax for £11.5m in July 2007, proving a very useful asset in his first season, especially from the bench, as he equalled Djibril Cissé’s club record of seven strikes in a season as a substitute. However, subsequent campaigns were far less productive, and he struck a total of 22 times in 146 appearances. On the same day, reserves forward David Amoo joined MK Dons on loan, making three substitute appearances. Happy birthday Bobby 1936 - Short-lived reds forward Bobby Murdoch was born in Garston. He struck seven times in nineteen reds games after signing as a professional in May 1957, as we struggled in the Second Division. He moved on to Barrow in September 1959. 1988 – Ex-reserves winger Adam Hammill was born in Liverpool. He was part of the victorious FA Youth Cup winning side in 2006 and was sold to Barnsley in August 2009 after several loan spells away from Anfield, including one at Oakwell. Managers in and out 2005 - Steve McMahon was appointed Manager of Perth Glory. He remained in the post for eleven months. On the same day, ex-red Frode Kippe played as Norway won a friendly 1-0 in Bahrain. 2006 - Mark Wright was suspended as Manager of Peterborough United. Six days later he was sacked for gross misconduct after failing to appear before the board. It is alleged that he made a racist comment to one of his staff, although he has always denied the charge. 2022 - Roy Hodgson came out of retirement to become Watford’s new boss but was unable to save them from relegation from the top flight. On the move 2007 - Salif Diao joined Stoke City on a free transfer, having made seventeen appearances while on loan at the Britannia Stadium. On the same day, ex-reds reserves forward Jon Newby joined Southport from Wrexham. He struck just once in eleven outings before moving on to Morecambe. 2013 – Reserves forward Michael Ngoo joined Heart Of Midlothian on loan, netting five times in seventeen games for the Scottish side. On the same day ex-reds left-back Emiliano Insúa joined Club Atlético de Madrid from Sporting Clube de Portugal for €3.5m after six goals in sixth outings while with the Lisbon outfit. 2017 – Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho signed a new five-year contract. He moved on to Barcelona for a mammoth initial £105m fee in January 2018 after 54 goals in 201 reds games since arriving from Internazionale for £8.5m in January 2013. 2018 – Left-back Tony Gallacher signed from Falkirk for £200,000, making his senior bow in our League Cup tie at Aston Villa last December. 2019 – Ex-reds loanee winger Victor Moses joined Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü on another temporary switch from Chelsea, scoring four times in sixteen appearances that season. African reds 2022 – Sadio Mané struck as Senegal beat Cape Verde 2-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 game in Cameroon. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah netted the only goal of Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations group game against Ghana in Gabon. 2013 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses played in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Zambia in South Africa. 2008 - Momo Sissoko won his final cap as a red as Mali held Nigeria to a goalless draw in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Ghana, with future red Kolo Touré playing as Ivory Coast beat Benin 4-1. 2004 - Ex-red Titi Camara netted as Guinea beat DR Congo 2-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations opener in Tunis. On the same day, ex-red Rigobert Song skippered Cameroon as they were held 1-1 by Algeria in Sfax, winning his fiftieth cap. 2002 - Song captained his country in the previous tournament as they beat the Ivory Coast 1-0 in Mali, with future red Kolo Touré on the losing side. 2001 - Rigobert Song won his first cap as a West Ham United player, his fiftieth for his country, as Cameroon won a friendly 3-1 in Benin. Harry on target 2011 – Ex-red Harry Kewell netted as Australia thumped Uzbekistan 6-0 in their AFC Asian Cup Finals Semi-final in Qatar. On the same day, future reds coach Gary O’Neil joined West Ham United from Middlesbrough. He struck three times in 56 outings for the Hammers until being released in June 2013. Other reds games 1975 – We lost 1-0 at Ipswich Town with Mick Mills nabbing the only goal of our FA Cup Fourth Round tie late on at Portman Road. 1913 – We beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in a top-flight match in L4 with Tom Miller netting twice. Young reds in action 2003 - Current and future reds were in action in the Under-17’s UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup in Egypt. David Raven was on target in England’s 3-2 defeat of Burkina Faso in Al-Misry. Meanwhile, future reds defenders Carl Medjani and Arnaud Bühler both featured for their countries. Medjani’s France beat Nigeria 3-2, while Bühler played as Switzerland beat host nation Egypt 2-0. 2009 – Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Colombia in a Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” group game in Venezuela. 2007 – Insúa played in the same tournament in a goalless draw with Colombia in Paraguay, with future red Lucas playing for Brazil in the same tournament that day as they beat the host nation 1-0. 1999 – Future red Christian Poulsen won his fourth and last cap for Denmark Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to the USA in a friendly in Spain. -
Stanley’s treble 1996 - Stan Collymore scored a treble as we thumped Third Division Rochdale 7-0 at Anfield in our Third Round meeting, our only senior encounter to date. Substitute Ian Rush scored his 39th and final FA Cup goal for the reds, breaking Denis Law’s record with his 42nd in total. Jason McAteer grabbed his first reds goal with Robbie Fowler also getting on the scoresheet, to add to a Peter Valentine own goal as we progressed to the Final that year. Truth day 2007 - We lost 3-1 at home to Arsenal in the Third Round of the FA Cup, with the Kop staging an emotional protest at the start of the game against Kelvin Mackenzie and in support of the 96 who lost their lives at Hillsborough in 1989. Dirk Kuyt grabbed our goal after Tomáš Rosický had bagged a brace, with Thierry Henry rounding out the scoring with the last of his nine goals past us. Double trouble 2013 – Daniel Sturridge scored on his reds bow as we won 2-1 at Blue Square Bet Premier side Mansfield Town in the FA Cup Third Round, with Luis Suárez netting the winner with the inadvertent use of an arm, so getting on the scoresheet in a third consecutive reds game. Matt Green nabbed a late consolation for the Stags. Double off the mark 2012 - Stewart Downing and Jonjo Shelvey both struck their first goals for the club as we thumped Oldham Athletic 5-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield on our way to Wembley. Robbie Simpson put the visitors ahead, but Craig Bellamy equalised before Steven Gerrard converted a penalty on the stroke of time. Birthday boy Andy Carroll was also on target. More hat-tricks 1968 - Roger Hunt scored a 22-minute second-half treble as we beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1 in a League game at Anfield after Geoff Strong had opened the scoring. Bobby Hope had hit the bar with a Baggies penalty, but the referee ordered a re-take because Tommy Lawrence had moved off his line. Tony Brown scored from the second kick to level the game with one of his eight strikes past the reds. 1992 - John Barnes bagged a treble on his comeback from a five-month injury lay-off, including a last-minute penalty, as we won 4-0 at Rob Jones’ former club Crewe Alexandra in an FA Cup Third Round tie as we set off towards Wembley glory. This remains our most recent FA Cup hat-trick away from home, with Steve McManaman opening the scoring. This was one of just two victories we enjoyed in our green and white Adidas away kit. Carroll’s day 1989 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll was born in Gateshead. He signed from Newcastle United for a club record £35m on transfer deadline day in January 2011 after 33 goals in 91 games for his boyhood club, including one in their 3-1 defeat of the reds at St. James’ Park in December 2010. He struck eleven times in 58 reds games, moving to West Ham United for their club record £15.5m fee in June 2013 after spending the previous season on loan at Upton Park. 1998 – Keeper Shamal George was born in Wirral. He joined the reds in 2009, making his first appearance for the first-team in our friendly win at Huddersfield Town in July 2016, as an outfield player! He moved on to Colchester United in August 2020. 1940 – Welsh full-back Allan Jones was born in Flint. He signed as an amateur in April 1955, turning professional two years later. He played five times before moving to Brentford in August 1963. 1876 – Inside-right Andrew McCowie was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896, netting eleven times in 35 games before joining Woolwich Arsenal in May 1899. In and out 2016 – Midfielder Marko Grujić signed from Crvena Zvezda for £5.1m and then was immediately loaned back. After arriving permanently that summer, he netted once in sixteen senior appearances, moving on to Porto permanently in July 2021 after a loan spell. On the same day, Luis Suárez was voted fifth in the Ballon d’Or, with fellow ex-red Javier Mascherano coming in fourteenth as Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the trophy. Held by the Hatters 2008 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at League One side Luton Town, with a John Arne Riise own goal cancelling out a Peter Crouch strike. We comfortably won the replay, but were then eliminated from the FA Cup at home by Barnsley at the Fifth Round stage. Off at the double 1912 - William Stuart scored his only reds goal on his debut as we won 3-2 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground. John Bovill struck his seventh and final reds goal in this game, with Jack Parkinson also on target as George Wynn nabbed a brace for the home side. Danny the champion 2008 - Centre-back Daniel Agger was named Denmark’s Footballer of the Year. He had played just 27 times for the reds in 2007, including the Champions League Final in Athens. Le debutant 2001 - Grégory Vignal made his reds bow as we beat Second Division Rotherham United 3-0 at home in an FA Cup Third Round encounter. Emile Heskey bagged a brace, to go with a rare Dietmar Hamann strike. Igor Bišcan was sent off as we began another Cup-winning run. Live on the Beeb 1984 - The first FA Cup tie outside the Final to be screened live in the UK was shown by the BBC on a Friday evening. Ian Rush netted a brace as we beat a Newcastle United side that included ex-reds Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott 4-0 in the Third Round, with Michael Robinson and Craig Johnston also on target. However, we lost at Brighton & Hove Albion in the next round. Cup disappointment 1951 - We lost 3-1 at Norwich City, our first defeat in the FA Cup Third Round since we had also been knocked out by the Canaries fourteen years earlier. Tom Docherty netted twice, with Noel Kinsey also on target for the home side. Jack Balmer bagged our late consolation. Reds deaths 1989 – Keeper Dave Underwood died. He signed from Watford for £7,000 in December 1953, playing fifty reds games before returning to Vicarage Road in July 1956. 2004 – Forward John Evans died. He was signed at the fourth attempt from Charlton Athletic in December 1953 for £12,500, but we suffered relegation in his first season at Anfield. His greatest moment with the reds came when he netted all our goals in a 5-3 defeat of Bristol Rovers in September 1954. Overall, he struck 53 times in 107 reds games before joining Colchester United in December 1957. 2005 - The funeral of post-war left-back Eddie Spicer took place at St Cwyfan's Church, Llangwyfan, near Denbigh. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title as well as playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. Wartime goalscoring feats 1918 - Thomas Bennett scored in his fifth consecutive game as we beat Preston North End 3-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League fixture, grabbing a brace with right-half John Bamber also on target. 1940 - Billy Liddell bagged a treble as we won 7-3 at Manchester City, with Willie Fagan and Berry Nieuwenhuys scoring twice apiece. Beating the Blues We have twice seen off Chelsea at Anfield on this day in history. 1923 - Billy Lacey struck the only goal of our top-flight encounter late on, his 29th and last reds goal. Forward Jack Sambrook appeared for the second and final time. 1962 - We won an FA Cup Third Round meeting by the odd goal in seven, with Ian St. John netting twice and Roger Hunt and Alan A’Court also on the scoresheet, as we led 4-1 at the break. We were eventually knocked out by Preston North End in the Fifth Round. Bobby Tambling bagged the first two of his eight goals past us, with Barry Bridges also on target for the Londoners. Reds in charge 1993 - Ex-red Richard Money took over as boss of Sc***horpe United, having previously held the role in a Caretaker capacity while an Iron player. He led them to mid-table in the Fourth Division that season, and again the following year before he left that summer. 2009 – Nigel Clough was appointed Manager of Derby County, as a replacement for Jewell. He remained in charge until being sacked in September 2013. 1998 - Former reserves forward Paul Jewell was appointed Manager of Bradford City. He led them into the Premiership in his first full season, before resigning after keeping them up the following year. 2015 – Jewell was named Joint Assistant Manager of West Bromwich Albion. However, he quit just seven days later after being asked to take a pay cut. On the move 1995 - Ex-reserves winger John Jeffers joined Second Division Shrewsbury Town on loan from Port Vale. He played five games for the Shrews, netting once. 2011 – Keeper Tony Warner signed for Tranmere Rovers, playing 25 times until the end of that season. Fagan for the Scots 1945 - Willie Fagan scored for a Scottish Services XI as they drew 2-2 with Belgium in Brussels. Fellow reds Jim Harley and Billy Liddell both also played. A big win 1894 - We won 4-1 at Rotherham Town in our first game on this day in history. James Stott grabbed a brace with Hugh McQueen and David Henderson also scoring as we conceded our first goal following six consecutive clean sheets, scored by Frank Turner Jr. Other reds games 1990 – Swansea City held us to a goalless draw in our FA Cup Third Round meeting at Vetch Field, trouncing them 8-0 in the Anfield replay, making it as far as the Semi-final that season. 1973 – Kevin Keegan headed in the only goal of our trip to West Ham United. 1934 – We drew 2-2 at Sheffield United, with Bert Oswald putting the Blades in front before Syd Roberts and Alf Hanson struck. Jack Pickering equalised late on with the last of his five goals past us. 1906 – We shared a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers. 1900 – We lost 1-0 at Sunderland. Career extremes 2007 – Joe Allen signed as a professional for Swansea City, having been part of their youth set-up since the age of nine. He struck seven goals in 150 first-team appearances for the Swans before arriving at Anfield for £15m in August 2012. 2010 - Patrik Berger announced his retirement from football due to persistent knee injuries. He struck 35 times in 196 reds games after his £3.25m capture from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund following a successful Euro ‘96 with the Czech Republic, and finished his career back with his first club, Sparta Praha.
