On the same day, Virgil van Dijk was appointed club captain, with Trent Alexander-Arnold named as his deputy. 2015 – Centre-forward Rickie Lambert was sold to West Bromwich Albion after just three goals in 36 reds games since arriving from Southampton for £4m in June 2014. Stewart off the mark 1992 - Paul Stewart scored his first reds goal, the winner in our 2-1 friendly win in Tromsø, with Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. His time at Anfield was a failure, as he scored just three times in 42 first-class appearances in nearly four seasons. He eventually left for Sunderland on a free transfer in March 1996. Most recently 2019 – We beat Olympique Lyonnais 3-1 in a friendly in Geneva, with Roberto Firmino and Harry Wilson netting either side of a Joachim Andersen own goal. On the same day, Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever signed his first professional contract with the reds, while centre-half Rhys Williams joined Kidderminster Harriers on loan, scoring once in just three games. 2022 - Left-winger Mateusz Musiałowski played his first reds game as Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace beat a very young reds side 3-0 in a pre-season friendly at Anfield. Up against Norway We played a Norway XI in Vålerenga on this day in consecutive years as part of our pre-season campaigns. 1996 - Robbie Fowler scored as we drew 1-1 with the match being decided by a penalty shoot-out. Welsh reserves striker Lee Jones missed our fifth and final spot-kick as we lost 5-4. 1997 - We won 3-1, thanks to a brace from Robbie Fowler and a strike from the young Michael Owen. Reds in Ireland 1970 - Bobby Graham and Peter Thompson were both on the scoresheet as we beat a League Of Ireland Select side 2-1 at Dalymount Park in Dublin. 1998 - Patrik Berger, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Danny Murphy grabbed our goals as we beat St. Patrick's Athletic 3-2 in the Carlsberg Belfast Challenge at Lansdowne Road. Twice at Ewood Park 1971 - John Toshack netted to give us a 1-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers in a pre-season friendly. 1999 - Robbie Fowler and Jamie Redknapp were on target as we drew 2-2. Red births 2003 – Right-back Calvin Ramsay was born in Aberdeen, signing from his hometown club for an initial £4.2m in June 2022. He only made two senior appearances in an injury-hit first campaign with the reds. 1895 – Right-half Francis Checkland was born in Seaforth. He arrived from junior football during the 1918/19 season but only made five senior appearances before joining Tranmere Rovers in October 1923. 1883 – Keeper Don Sloan was born in Rankinston, Ayr. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. Other friendlies 2004 - We lost 1-0 to Porto, the reigning European champions, in a ChampionsWorld Series game in Toronto. 1994 - We helped the German town of Fulda celebrate its 1,250th anniversary, losing 2-0 to Bayern München in the Firestone International Challenge Cup at Das Stadion der Stad. 1993 - John Barnes bagged a brace, with Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Ian Rush also on target as we won 4-3 at Tranmere Rovers. England reds on target 1996 - Michael Owen and future red Emile Heskey both netted for England Under-18’s in Besançon as they beat Belgium 3-2 to claim third place in the European Championship Finals. Reds reserve Jamie Cassidy also played. 2009 - Conor Coady, Jack Robinson and Andre Wisdom all featured as England Under-17’s beat host nation Norway 1-0 in a Nordic Tournament group game in Trondheim. Also on the move 1996 - Mark Walters joined Swindon Town from Southampton on a free transfer, just six months and nine appearances after arriving at The Dell. He scored 32 times in 130 appearances, as the Robins struggled to survive in the First Division. 1999 - Christian Ziege joined Middlesbrough from AC Milan for £4m. He scored six times in 29 League games while at the Riverside, before moving to Anfield in a rancorous transfer the following summer. 2009 – Steve Finnan signed for Portsmouth, having been released by R.C.D. Espanyol four days previously. He played 25 times for Pompey before being released at the end of the season. On the same day, reserves right-back Stephen Darby and midfielder Jay Spearing both signed new contracts to tie them to the reds until 2012. On the same day, future loanee centre-half Steven Caulker joined Cardiff City from Tottenham Hotspur for a club record fee of more than £8m, going on to score five times in 39 outings before moving to Queens Park Rangers a year later. 2019 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux signed for Chilean side Everton de Viña del Mar, leaving after five months having failed to play a senior game as the season there was cancelled due to social unrest. Other internationals in action 2021 – Future red Wataru Endō played for Japan as they beat New Zealand on penalties in their Olympics Finals Quarter-final in Kashima, after the game had ended goalless after extra time. 2014 – Trent Alexander-Arnold captained England Under-17’s as they lost 3-0 to Sweden in a Nordic Tournament group game in Denmark, with Herbie Kane also featuring. 2011 - Dani Pacheco featured as Spain Under-20’s beat Costa Rica 4-1 in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia. 2007 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-17’s in their 2-0 defeat of the Faroe Islands in a tournament game in Ikast. 1988 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil as they drew 1-1 with a Sweden Olympics XI in Stockholm. -
He’s red, he’s white 2000 - Nick Barmby signed from Everton for £6m, prompting an unprecedented tide of bitterness from across Stanley Park. He became the first player to switch directly from Everton to Liverpool since Dave Hickson in November 1959. Barmby netted eight times in 58 reds games, moving on to Leeds United for £2.75m in August 2002. Red departures 2017 – Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva was sold to S.S. Lazio for £5m. He made 346 senior appearances after signing from Grêmio for a reported £5m in May 2007, notching just seven times. 1992 - Barry Venison was sold to Newcastle United for £250,000. He had struck three times in 158 appearances for the reds since arriving from Sunderland for £200,000 in August 1986, winning two League titles and an FA Cup in his time at Anfield. 2008 – Keeper Scott Carson was sold to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m, after seasons on loan at first Charlton Athletic and then Aston Villa. He turned out on 118 occasions for the Midlands outfit before joining Turkish side Bursaspor in July 2011. He had made just nine senior reds appearances following his arrival from Leeds United for £750,000 in January 2005, only keeping two clean sheets. Happy birthday Ray 1922 - Welsh international full-back Ray Lambert was born in Bagillt, Flintshire. He joined the reds when he was just thirteen and went on to make 341 first-team appearances, netting just twice, including being part of the 1947 title-winning side. Other birthdays 1905 - Outside-right Billy Hartill was born. He only made four senior appearances in early 1936, after signing from Everton that January, moving on to Bristol Rovers just two months later. He had previously been a prolific marksman with hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers, bagging 164 goals in 221 League games. 1895 - Mid-1920’s reserves full-back James Garner was born in Manchester. He only played five times for the reds and went on to make 26 League appearances for Southport. Writing history 2002 - It was announced that a new weekly magazine called LFC would be launched the following month, the first official weekly magazine dedicated to a single Premiership club. Rick Parry said, “We feel our fans are ready for the new weekly ‘LFC’ magazine which will give them a real insight into life at Anfield and Melwood.” It was eventually replaced by a monthly publication after 513 issues. Youngsters on their way out 2006 - French centre-back Carl Medjani signed for Lorient permanently, having previously spent a season on loan there. He made only nine League appearances to add to the 25 from his first spell at Stade Le Moustoir, before joining AJ Ajaccio. 2011 – Argentine midfielder Gerardo Bruna was sold to Blackpool, having helped the reserves to claim the League at the end of his first season in 2008. He made just four substitute appearances for the Tangerines before moving to S.D. Huesca in September 2013. Adam’s day 2008 – Reserves winger Adam Hammill signed a new contract until 2011, also joining Blackpool on loan on the same day. He struck once in 23 outings for the Seasiders, and later spent time with fellow Championship side Barnsley that season, moving permanently to Oakwell in August 2009. God for England 1993 - Robbie Fowler netted for England Under-18’s as they beat France 2-0 in a European Championship Finals group game in Stoke. On the same day, future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil as they held Ecuador to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in Guayaquil. 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye scored his first goal for Norway Under-19’s as they beat Denmark 3-0 in a tournament game in Slagelse. Taking the step up 2006 - Right-back Stephen Darby, central midfielder Ryan Flynn, striker Craig Lindfield, goalkeeper David Roberts and left-back Robbie Threlfall all moved from the Academy to Melwood. All have since left the club, with Darby the only one to make the first team, on just six occasions. 2011 - Coach Steve Cooper was named Academy Manager, a role he held until joining the FA two years later. Also on the move 1939 – Ex-reds centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw joined South Liverpool from Third Lanark. He struck four times in 291 reds appearances after signing from Bury for £8,000 in January 1930. He returned to his native land in September 1938, joining Third Lanark. 1985 - Future red Paul Ince signed as a professional for West Ham United. He netted twelve times in 95 games for the Hammers, before joining Manchester United for £1m in September 1989. 2009 – Future reds loanee left-back Aly Cissokho joined Olympique Lyonnais from Porto for €15m, after 23 games for the Portuguese side. 2012 – Ex-reserves forward Krisztián Németh signed for Roda JC Kerkrade, scoring ten in 45 Eredivisie games before leaving in July 2014. 2023 – Colombian defender Anderson Arroyo joined Andorra on loan, playing eleven times. Youngsters in Euro action 2003 - John Welsh played as England Under-19’s beat France 2-0 in a European Championship Finals group encounter in Liechtenstein. Meanwhile, future red Alberto Aquilani represented Italy in the same competition in their 1-1 draw with Portugal. 2004 – Arnaud Bühler appeared for Switzerland in their goalless draw with Ukraine in the same tournament. 2005 - Keeper Paul Willis played for Northern Ireland Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Greece in the same competition at Windsor Park, with future reds custodian featuring in England’s 1-1 draw with France. 2006 - Antonio Barragán played as Spain beat Turkey 5-3 in a group game in Poland. 2007 - Future red Damien Plessis was sent off as France Under 19’s were held to a 1-1 draw by Germany in the same competition in Austria. Future red Mikel San José also featured on the same day as Spain and Portugal also drew 1-1 in the same tournament. 2010 – Future red Thiago Alcântara netted for Spain Under-19’s as they beat Croatia 2-1 in the European Championships Finals in France, with Dani Pacheco also playing. Chris Mavinga played in France’s 4-1 defeat of the Netherlands, while future reds Steven Caulker and Nathaniel Clyne played as England beat Austria 3-2 in the same competition. On the same day, future red Fabio Borini featured as Italy lost 2-0 to Portugal. 2016 – Sheyi Ojo played for England Under-19’s in their 2-1 defeat of Croatia in a group-stage game in Germany. Also in international action 1925 - Reds forward James Walsh played for an England side as they beat Australia 5-0 in an FA Tour game in Sydney. 1995 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared for Brazil as they drew 2-2 with Argentina in the Copa América Quarter-final in Uruguay, before winning a penalty shoot-out. -
Legendary arrivals 1987 - Peter Beardsley signed from Newcastle United for a then British record fee of £1.9m. He netted eighteen times in his first season at Anfield as he and fellow new signing John Barnes inspired the reds to some fantastic football - better than the Brazilians even! He made a total of 175 appearances, scoring 59 times, before Graeme Souness sold him to Everton for £1m in August 1991. 1975 – Full-back Joey Jones signed from Wrexham for £110,000. He made exactly a century of reds appearances, bagging three goals and helping us to win a European Cup, two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his time at Anfield. He rejoined Wrexham for £210,000 in October 1978. 1991 - Dean Saunders signed from Derby County for a British record £2.9m fee as a replacement for Peter Beardsley. He scored 25 goals in 61 appearances as the reds won the FA Cup, before being moved on to Aston Villa in September 1992. Making some sterling 2015 – Winger Raheem Sterling was sold to Manchester City for an initial £44m after notching 23 goals in 129 reds games since signing from Queens Park Rangers for an initial £500,000 in February 2010. In comes Momo 2005 - Momo Sissoko signed from Valencia from £5.6m. He helped us to claim the FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, playing 87 times, and scoring just once, despite suffering two serious injuries while at Anfield. He had previously been signed by Rafael Benítez while he was in Spain, from Auxerre, and left Anfield for Juventus in a £8.2m deal in January 2008. Other recent departures 2016 – Centre-half Martin Škrtel was sold to Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü for £5.5m. He had signed from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m in January 2008 to become our 2most expensive defender to date. The tough Slovakian notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012. On the same day, winger Jordon Ibe was sold to Bournemouth for a reported £15m. He had arrived from Wycombe Wanderers for a reported £750,000 in December 2011, notching four times in 58 reds games. 2008 - Danny Guthrie was sold to Newcastle United for £2.25m after just seven senior games for the reds. He bagged nine goals in 104 games for the Geordies before being released in June 2012. Mo off the mark 2017 – Mohamed Salah scored in his first reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Wigan Athletic. 2018 – We drew 0-0 at Bury. 2019 – Forward Liam Millar played his first senior game as we won a friendly 3-1 at Bradford City, with Daniel Atherton featuring for the first time in goal, having played as a forward three days earlier. Rhian Brewster added to a James Milner brace that included one from the spot, in a game that raised money for ex-red Stephen Darby’s Darby Rimmer MND Foundation. Debuting at Gresty Road 2007 - Midfielder Ray Putterill scored in his first senior reds outing as we won 3-0 at Crewe Alexandra. Lee Peltier also nabbed his first senior strike while Andriy Voronin made his first appearance. Our other goal came from Peter Crouch. Thai debutants 2015 – We beat a True Thai Premier League All Stars side 4-0 in Bangkok to claim the True Super Trophy, with forward Divock Origi on target in his first reds game. Keeper Ádám Bogdán, right-back Nathaniel Clyne, defender Joe Gomez, forward Danny Ings, left-back Joe Maguire and midfielder James Milner all also made their reds bows. Our other goals came from Lazar Marković, Mamadou Sakho and Adam Lallana. Starting out 1981 - John Barnes signed for Watford from non-League Sudbury Court. He went on to score 83 times in 292 appearances for the Hornets, before moving to Merseyside seven years later. 2008 – Future red Daniel Sturridge won his first cap for England Under-19’s as they lost 2-0 to the host nation Czech Republic in a European Championships Finals group game. 1991 – Future red Titi Camara bagged his first senior international goal as Guinea beat Mali 2-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Conakry. 1993 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared for Brazil for the first time since moving to Reggiana as they beat Paraguay 2-0 in a friendly in Rio de Janeiro. 1989 – Taffarel also played for his country in their 3-0 defeat of Paraguay in a final round Copa América game, again in Rio de Janeiro. Ferri down the Mersey 1999 - Jean-Michel Ferri joined Sochaux for £1.5m, just seven months and two substitute appearances after joining the reds from Turkish side Istanbulspor for £1.8m. Reaching the Final 2019 – Sadio Mané played as Senegal beat Tunisia 1-0 after extra time in Cairo to reach the Africa Cup of Nations Final, which they went on to lose to Algeria. Tireless Dunlop 1871 - Scottish international left-back Billy Dunlop was born in Kilmarnock. He signed from Abercorn for £35 in January 1895 and made 363 appearances for the reds, netting just three times, winning two League titles and two Second Division Championships. Kris on target 2008 – Krisztián Németh struck for Hungary Under-19’s as they beat Bulgaria 1-0 in the European Championships Finals in the Czech Republic. His club-mates Peter Gulácsi and András Simon both also featured, while Mikel San José played in Spain’s 2-1 defeat by Germany in the same competition. New between the sticks 2007 - Goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero was appointed. He had a lengthy playing career in Spain, as well as turning out three times for Wrexham. After retiring from playing, he took his coaching badges, and earned a Masters in Goalkeeper Coaching from the Spanish Football Federation as well as a Masters in Sports Psychology. He followed Rafael Benítez to Internazionale in 2010. Internationals on target 2001 - El-Hadji Diouf scored the only goal of Senegal’s World Cup qualifier against Morocco in Dakar, with fellow future red Salif Diao also playing. 1988 - Øyvind Leonhardsen struck his only goal for Norway Under-17’s while winning his second and final cap at this level in their 3-1 defeat to Finland in a tournament game in Poland. He had spent two and a half years at Goodison, and only lasted a year on Wearside before returning to West Ham United. 2008 - Christian Poulsen joined Juventus from Sevilla for €9.75m. He scored once in 57 games for the Old Lady before joining the reds for £4.5m in August 2010. 2010 – The club announced that midfielder Francisco Durán and keeper Nikolay Mihaylov had both left the club. 2011 – Ex-reserves midfielder Ryan Flynn signed for Sheffield United from Falkirk, so far netting sixteen times in 162 games for the Blades. 2013 - Thiago Alcântara joined Bayern München from Barcelona for €25m, going on to net 31 times in 235 games while in Germany as they won the Bundesliga title in each of his seven seasons. Burkinshaw the boss 1976 - 1950’s reds wing-half Keith Burkinshaw was appointed Manager of Tottenham Hotspur. He spent eight years in charge, leading them to two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup, as well as signing two World champions in Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. He signed from Roma for a basic fee of €20m in August 2009, but injury restricted him to just 28 senior appearances, in which he notched only twice, although he did manage to register six assists in the League, only one less than Steven Gerrard. He was sold to Fiorentina in August 2012 after two seasons on loan back in his native land, with Juventus and AC Milan. Champions 2019 – Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, future red Arthur Melo and ex-red Philippe Coutinho all featured as Brazil beat Peru 3-1 in the Copa América Final in Rio de Janeiro to become South American champions for the ninth time. Mixed semi-final fortunes 2021 – Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling played as England beat Denmark 2-1 at Wembley to reach the European Championships Final after extra time, although they went on to lose the showpiece to Italy on penalties. 2010 – Fernando Torres and ex-red Xabi Alonso both featured as Spain beat Germany 1-0 in Durban to reach the World Cup Final. 1998 - Future red Bolo Zenden played as the Netherlands lost 4-2 on penalties to Brazil in the World Cup Semi-final in Marseille after the match had ended 1-1, with future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel saving two spot-kicks in the shoot-out. 2011 – Future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both netted as Germany Under-17’s lost 3-2 to host nation Mexico in the World Championships Semi-final. On the same day, future red Mohamed Salah scored as Egypt Under-20’s drew a friendly 2-2 in Portugal. 2016 – Can played for the senior side as Germany lost 2-0 to France in the European Championships Semi-final in Marseille. Ince out 1999 - It was announced that Paul Ince would be leaving the club. Gérard Houllier said, “I have told him he is not in my plans for Liverpool. He should look elsewhere now.” He joined Middlesbrough for £1m three weeks later. He had struck seventeen times in 81 reds games during his two years at Anfield. Ending up fourth 1990 - Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon and future red Mark Wright all played as England lost 2-1 to Italy in the World Cup third place play-off in Bari. Debuts galore 2018 – Rafa Camacho, Fabinho, Curtis Jones, Naby Keïta and Nat Phillips all made their reds bows as we thumped Chester 7-0 at their Swansway Chester Stadium in our opening pre-season friendly. Winger Harry Wilson bagged his first two goals for the club as we led 2-0 at half time. James Milner converted a penalty before Daniel Sturridge bagged a brace, with Ryan Kent netting his first for the reds and Danny Ings also on target. 1988 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel debuted for Brazil as they beat the host nation 1-0 in a group game in the Australia Bicentenary Gold Cup in Melbourne. 1989 – Taffarel featured in Brazil’s goalless draw with Colombia in a Copa América group game in Salvador. Besian’s treble 2007 - Besian Idrizaj scored a hat-trick, his first reds goals, as we took a three-goal half-time lead in our opening pre-season friendly at Wrexham before eventually winning 3-2. Jordy Brouwer, Stephen Darby, Ryan Flynn, Martin Hansen, Ronald Huth, Krisztián Németh, András Simon and Jay Spearing all played their first reds games that day. In and out 2008 – Sarajevo-born forward Nikola Sarić signed for the reds from Herfølge Boldklub in Denmark. He had recently been named as Under-17’s Player of the Year by the Danish Football Association. He failed to break through to the first team and moved on to HNK Hajduk Split in June 2011. 2015 – Spanish right-back Javier Manquillo had his loan from Club Atlético de Madrid terminated. He had made nineteen senior appearances. Emile on the move again 2006 - Emile Heskey joined Wigan Athletic from Birmingham City for £5.5m. He struck sixteen times in 88 games for the Latics before moving to Aston Villa for £3.5m in January 2009. Ray on the way up 1982 - Ray Houghton signed for Fulham from West Ham United on a free transfer, five years prior to his arrival at Anfield. He netted 21 times in 145 appearances for the Cottagers, before moving on to Oxford United. Also on the move 2000 - Young midfielder Layton Maxwell joined Stockport County on loan. He scored twice in 23 appearances for them before joining Cardiff City on a free transfer a year later. His only reds appearance had come in a Worthington Cup tie against Hull City in September 1999, when he scored in front of the Kop. 2004 - Dominic Matteo joined Blackburn Rovers from Leeds United on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Nick Barmby also moved for free, joining Hull City from Leeds United. Matteo played just 39 times for Rovers before joining Stoke City in January 2007, while Barmby turned out on 197 occasions for his hometown club, netting 32 times, as well as taking over as Manager for five months. 1993 – Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from West Ham United for £600,000, having bagged thirty goals in 279 outings for the Hammers. 2008 – Ex-reserves forward Steven Gillespie joined Colchester United from Cheltenham Town for £400,000. Wembley glory for the 96 1989 - We clinched the FA Cup for the fourth time, in an all-Merseyside final, five weeks after the Hillsborough disaster that claimed 96 lives. John Aldridge, who was playing his hundredth reds game, opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a strike that was named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season, the only time the same player has claimed the award in consecutive seasons. We led until Stuart McCall equalised towards the end of the second half. Ian Rush put us back in front in extra-time before McCall became the first substitute to score twice in an FA Cup Final to level the match again. McCall’s achievement was then matched by Rushie who won us the cup with his 23rd FA Cup goal. The departure of a legend 1996 - Ian Rush signed for Leeds United on a free transfer, after his 346 strikes in 660 games had helped shoot us to countless honours. However, he bagged just three goals in 43 games for Leeds. Last win of the season 1985 - We played our only other first-class game on this day, winning 3-0 at West Ham United, our last win of a season that saw us finish second in the First Division, thirteen points behind Everton, and then go on to lose the European Cup Final on a tragic day at the Stade du Heysel in Brussels. He made four first-team appearances but left Anfield to sign for Carlisle United in July 2006. Jack’s treble 1948 - Jack Balmer scored a hat-trick as we beat a Baltimore All Stars side 9-2, with Ken Brierley netting a brace and Billy Liddell, Willie Fagan, Jim Harley and Albert Stubbins all also on the scoresheet. 1953 - We played another friendly in the USA, beating a New England Select 4-0 in Fall River, thanks to two goals from Mervyn Jones and strikes from Jack Smith and Don Welsh. A special day for Emlyn 1972 - Emlyn Hughes nabbed his only full international goal as England beat Wales 3-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff, up against John Toshack. 1980 - He played in the same tournament, no longer as a red, as England drew 1-1 with Northern Ireland at Wembley, as he captained them for the last time. Robert Robinson added a brace, with Jack Cox also on target. Fighting back 1939 – Portsmouth came back from 4-1 down with less than half an hour remaining to draw 4-4 in a top-flight match at Anfield. Phil Taylor bagged a brace with Willie Fagan and Berry Nieuwenhuys also netting before smog descended on the pitch. Happy birthday Thommo 1954 - Phil Thompson was born in Kensington, Liverpool. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. Martin’s bow 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel made his reds debut as a substitute for the injured Álvaro Arbeloa in our 2-2 home draw with Aston Villa, our fourth successive tie in the League. Yossi Benayoun gave us the lead before Villa hit back through Marlon Harewood and a Fábio Aurélio own goal in the space of three minutes. Robbie Fowler got the extra-time winner against our only top-flight opposition in that season’s victorious campaign. 1969 – Roger Hunt played his 400th League game for the reds in our 4-0 trouncing at Derby County. Kevin Hector struck the first two of his four goals against us, with John O’Hare bagging one of his six and John McGovern also on target. Three for Walsh 1986 - Paul Walsh bagged a hat-trick, including a penalty, as we beat Norwich City 6-2 at Anfield. Ian Rush nabbed a brace, with the scoring completed by Steve Nicol, with ex-red David Hodgson netting for the visitors and Mike Phelan also on target. Kenny Dalglish came off the bench to replace Nicol, so making his 500th reds appearance. Graham Benstead was replaced in the City goal by Bryan Gunn following this game. Another Anfield treble 1902 - Sam Raybould netted a treble as we thumped Middlesbrough 5-0, with Edgar Chadwick scoring the first of his seven reds goals and Jack Cox also on target. Mo the skipper 2023 - Mohamed Salah captained the reds from the start for the first time as we won a League Cup Fourth Round tie 2-1 at Bournemouth, our 250th game in the competition. Cody Gakpo poked home in the first half, but Patrick Kluivert levelled with his first goal for the Cherries before Darwin Núñez struck a spectacular winner. Mixed derby fortunes 1987 - We beat champions Everton 2-0 at Anfield thanks to goals from ex-Blue Steve McMahon and future Blue Peter Beardsley. 1941 - We lost 5-3 at Goodison Park in a Wartime League game. Cyril Done bagged a brace, with Billy Liddell also on target. God off 1997 - Robbie Fowler struck in the first minute and was then sent off with a quarter of an hour left as we held Bolton Wanderers to a 1-1 draw on our first visit to the Reebok Stadium, after Nathan Blake’s late equaliser. Vedgy’s last 1999 – Vegard Heggem bagged his third and last reds goal late on in our 3-1 defeat of Bradford City. The visitors took the lead through Dean Windass, with Titi Camara equalising and Jamie Redknapp converting a penalty before half time. Beaten 2008 - We lost 2-1 in torrential rain at Tottenham Hotspur, despite taking the lead through Dirk Kuyt and then hitting the woodwork three times. Spurs equalised through a Jamie Carragher own goal, his sixth to set a new club record, before Roman Pavlyuchenko secured an unlikely victory. 2014 – We were beaten 1-0 at Newcastle United, thanks to a goal from Ayoze Pérez. International debutants 1967 - Ray Clemence and Emlyn Hughes both won their first Under-23’s caps as England beat Wales 2-1 in a friendly at the Vetch Field. 2008 - John Barnes took over as Manager of Jamaica, having been appointed in September, a role he held until moving to Tranmere Rovers in June 2009. Beginning and ends 1913 - Jimmy Dawson played the first of his fourteen reds games as we lost 3-0 at Manchester United. George Wall bagged two of his ten goals against the reds with Enoch West scoring the last of his eight. 1930 – Outside-right Dick Edmed made his 170th and final reds outing as Manchester City won 2-0 at Anfield. Jimmy McIntosh nabbed two of his six goals against the reds. Bob signs on 1913 – Scottish forward Bob McDougall signed from St. Cuthbert Wanderers. He scored once in eight outings before moving on to Falkirk in October 1915. Twice in the Potteries We have twice visited Stoke City on this day in history. 1958 - We won 2-0 in a Second Division encounter thanks to strikes from Louis Bimpson and Jimmy Melia, on his 21st birthday. 1980 - Strike partners David Johnson and Kenny Dalglish twice gave us the lead as we were held to a top-flight draw, with the final goal coming as literally the last kick of the game. Lee Chapman netted the first of his six goals past us, with Paul Randall also on target. Stoke’s side also included future Blues Paul Bracewell and Adrian Heath. Off to Meadow Lane on loan 2007 - Reserves forward Craig Lindfield joined League Two side Notts County on loan. He bagged just one goal in four outings for the Magpies before returning to Anfield. 2010 – Right-back Stephen Darby and midfielder Tom Ince both made temporary moves to Meadow Lane. Darby made nine appearances in this first spell there, with Ince netting twice in eight outings. Other reds games 1952 –Jimmy Payne netted as we beat League leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield, with Billy Liddell converting the rebound from his own saved penalty. 1919 – Bertie Freeman bagged the last of his nine goals against the reds as Burnley won 1-0 in L4. New boss 2011 – Ex-reds reserves forward Jon Newby was appointed Player/Manager of Conference North side Colwyn Bay, being sacked in January 2013. Awards season 2002 - Gérard Houllier was awarded the Barclaycard Manager of the Month Award following three straight wins in October, against Chelsea, Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur, as we sat on top of the table. 2011 – Luis Suárez and ex-red Xabi Alonso were both short-listed for the FIFA Ballon d’Or, with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi eventually claiming the prize. -
Happy birthday Brucie 1957 - Bruce Grobbelaar was born in Durban, South Africa. Our eccentric keeper signed from Vancouver Whitecaps for £250,000 in March 1981 and played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields. Other birthdays 1948 - Larry Lloyd was born in Bristol. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. He was sold to Coventry City for £240,000 in August 1974. 1988 - Right-back and former reserves skipper Stephen Darby was born in Liverpool. He made the move to Melwood in the summer of 2006 after skippering the reds to FA Youth Cup glory earlier that year, also featuring as they retained the trophy the following year. He made six senior appearances as well as sitting on the bench on a further thirteen occasions, moving on to Bradford City in July 2012 after several loan spells away from Anfield. He retired from professional football in September 2018 after being diagnosed with motor neuron disease. 1940 - Inside-forward Willie Carlin was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in May 1958 but only made one first-team appearance for the club, a 1-1 draw at Stoke City in October 1959, and moved on to Halifax Town in August 1962, going on to make a total of over 400 League appearances for a variety of clubs. Twelve in a row 1990 - We won our twelfth successive League match, a new club record, as Derby County went down 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Ray Houghton strike and a penalty from Peter Beardsley past Peter Shilton. Unfortunately, this run came to an end in our next game, as we drew 1-1 at Norwich City a fortnight later. Being sold 2010 – The club announced that the Board had agreed the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures. Eventually, the deal went through after a series of delaying tactics by George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks. Double capture 1966 – Full-back Stuart Mason and left-back Peter Wall signed from Wrexham for a combined £35,000. Mason never made the first team, while Wall failed to score in 42 first-team appearances in three and a half years at Anfield, but had greater success with his next club, Crystal Palace, whom he joined in May 1970 for £30,000. He spent eight seasons at Selhurst Park, playing over 200 times for them with one of his rare goals coming at Anfield in January 1972, although we still won 4-1. 1950 – Outside-right Don Woan signed from Bootle Athletic for £1,000, but only played two senior games before moving on to Leyton Orient in November 1951. A baptism of fire 1991 - Rob Jones made his reds bow, just two days after signing from Crewe Alexandra. It was a real baptism of fire, as he helped us to claim a goalless draw at Manchester United. King Kenny on top 2006 - Kenny Dalglish came out on top in the club official website’s first 100 Players Who Shook The Kop poll, finishing ahead of Steven Gerrard, Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and John Barnes. The votes were cast by over 110,000 fans across the summer. Bosses in and out 2001 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Saint-Étienne. He had been in the side when we famously saw off Les Verts in 1977, but only lasted three months at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard before quitting. 2006 - Ex-reserves forward John Durnin resigned as a Coach at Southport, apparently due to other coaching and playing commitments. 2008 – Another former second-string striker, Mike Newell, was named as Grimsby Town boss, leading them to 22nd in League Two at the end of his first season. Dominic Solanke bagged his first goal for England Under-21’s in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying defeat of Scotland at the Riverside Stadium, with Joe Gomez winning his seventh and last cap at this level and Trent Alexander-Arnold also in action. Future red Thiago Alcântara scored his first goal for Spain as they beat Albania 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Alicante. On the same day, ex-red Nuri Şahin won his last cap in his second spell as a Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund player, as Turkey were beaten 3-0 at home by Iceland in a World Cup qualifier, with Marko Grujić and future reds Wataru Endō and Ozan Kabak also representing their countries. Aiming for the Far East 2001 - A host of reds played in World Cup qualifiers around Europe. Future red Milan Baroš was on target in the Czech Republic’s 6-0 thumping of Bulgaria in Prague, with Vladimír Šmicer coming on as a substitute to win his fiftieth cap. He also won a League title and FA Charity Shield in his time at Anfield, before moving on to Real Sociedad for £1.1m in September 1989. 1987 – French left-back Aly Cissokho was born in Blois. He arrived on loan from Valencia in August 2013 for a season, making nineteen appearances. 1917 - Phil Taylor was born in Bristol. He signed from Bristol Rovers in March 1936 in exchange for outside-right Billy Hartill plus £5,000. He made 345 appearances at right-half before and after the war, scoring 34 times and winning one League title and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in July 1954, and became Manager in May 1956, staying in the job for three years, but has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. A derby record 1948 - The record attendance at a Merseyside derby was set as 78,299 witnessed a 1-1 draw. Willie Fagan grabbed our goal before Jock Dodds converted a penalty for the Blues after a Bill Shepherd handball, the first spot-kick they had ever been awarded in a derby. Four for Deano 1991 - Dean Saunders scored four goals in our 6-1 thumping of Finnish side Kuusysi Lahti in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign. Ray Houghton scored the other two in our first game back in Europe after the ban following the Heysel disaster. Nine in a row 2021 - Sadio Mané scored in his ninth consecutive game against Crystal Palace, a Premier League record, which was also his hundredth reds goal. We won 3-0 at Anfield as Jordan Henderson captained the side for the 200th time, while Virgil van Dijk reached a century of League outings for us. Centre-half Ibrahima Konaté made his reds bow as Mohamed Salah and Naby Keïta also struck. Signing on 2020 – Midfielder Thiago Alcântara signed from Bayern München for an initial £20m. He scored three goals in 98 reds appearances, helping us claim the League Cup and FA Community Shield, before retiring in the summer of 2024. 1929 – Scottish centre-forward Jimmy Smith signed from Ayr United for £5,500. He still holds the British seasonal scoring record, having bagged 66 for Ayr in 1927/28. He struck 38 goals in 62 reds games including two on his debut against Manchester United. Off, off, off! 2011 - Sebastián Coates made his reds bow as a first-half replacement for the injured Daniel Agger just before Charlie Adam was sent off after two cautions with the reds 1-0 down at Tottenham Hotspur thanks to a Luka Modrić strike. We eventually crashed to a 4-0 defeat, Kenny Dalglish’s worst ever as reds boss, as Martin Škrtel was also dismissed for a second yellow card, shortly before Jermain Defoe doubled Spurs’ lead, one of his six strikes against us to date. Also in international action 1938 – Ex-red Matt O’Mahoney played for the Republic of Ireland as they thumped Switzerland 4-0 in a friendly in Dublin. 1988 – Future red goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil thrashed Nigeria 4-0 in an Olympics Finals group game in South Korea. 2002 – Future red Glen Johnson represented England Under-19’s in their 3-1 defeat of Hungary in a friendly in Budapest. 2003 – Michael Foley-Sheridan featured as the Irish Under-19’s drew 1-1 with Bulgaria in a European Championships qualifier in San Marino. 2016 – Rafael Camacho skippered Portugal Under-17’s in their 5-0 trouncing of Malta in a European Championships qualifier. -
Walsh walks in 1984 - Paul Walsh signed from Luton Town for £700,000. He went on to nab 37 goals in 112 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1986, although he missed the run-in due to ruptured ankle ligaments. He left Anfield to sign for Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000 in February 1988. The youngsters claim a trophy 1996 - We won the FA Youth Cup for the first of four times to date. We beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield, to claim the trophy 4-1 on aggregate. Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen featured for the reds. Setting records 1979 - Our 3-0 win at Leeds United was our thirtieth League victory of the season, one behind Tottenham Hotspur’s record from 1960/61. David Johnson bagged a brace either side of a Jimmy Case strike in a game originally postponed from two months earlier. We therefore ended the League season having only conceded sixteen goals in all, a record that stood until 2004/05 with a then record 68 points, having clinched our eleventh League title a week earlier. We also netted a total of 85 League goals, so claiming a £50,000 prize from a national newspaper for scoring more than two goals per game across the season. Red farewells 2022 – Nathan Redmond put Southampton ahead early on at St Mary’s Stadium, but ex-Saints loanee Takumi Minamino struck his fourteenth goal in his 55th and final outing. Divock Origi came off the bench for his 175th and last reds appearance, with Joël Matip heading in as we eventually won 2-1 to take the title race down to the final day. 2009 - We won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion to relegate the home side, thanks to goals from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt. This was our thirteenth away League win of the season, equalling a club record from 1904/05, and our ninth straight win at The Hawthorns. Álvaro Arbeloa played his 98th and final reds game, being involved with an angry exchange with Jamie Carragher towards the end of the match. Crossing the park 1895 - Forward Fred Geary signed from Everton for £60, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. Other games on this day We have only played three other first-class games on this day over the years. 1985 - We beat Watford 4-3 at Anfield with Ian Rush grabbing a brace, to add to a goal from Kenny Dalglish and a John Wark penalty. Our other two games ended in 1-1 away draws. 1947 - Winger Bob Priday netted his first reds goal at Brentford as we survived almost the entire second half with ten men after an injury to Bob Paisley. 1969 - Roger Hunt was on the scoresheet at Newcastle United as we ended the season in second place, six points behind champions Leeds United. This game was originally postponed back in December. International debutants 1964 - Peter Thompson made his England debut in their 4-3 friendly defeat of Portugal in Lisbon. Clubmate Gordon Milne also played. 1928 - Future reds left-back Ernie Blenkinsop won the first of his 26 England caps as they thumped France 5-1 in a friendly in Paris. 2007 - Stephen Darby won his first cap for England Under-19’s, playing alongside clubmates Adam Hammill, Jack Hobbs and Craig Lindfield, and against Jordy Brouwer as the Netherlands won this European Championships qualifier 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Into the park 2002 - Liverpool Football Club announced their first set of plans for a new stadium in Stanley Park, which it was said would hold 55,000 supporters. The new stadium was scheduled to cost between £60m and £70m to build and it was claimed that it could even be ready for the start of the 2005/06 season. These plans have now been moth-balled. Wor Kev’s testimonial 1984 - We took part in a testimonial game for Kevin Keegan as we drew 2-2 at Newcastle United. Michael Robinson and Graeme Souness bagged our goals, while Keegan and Terry McDermott were on target for the home side. Thommo at the wrong end 1980 - Skipper Phil Thompson scored an own goal for England as they were thumped 4-1 by Wales at the Racecourse Ground in the British International Championships. Ex-red Larry Lloyd won his fourth and final cap, and his only one as a Nottingham Forest player, eight years after his previous cap. Ray Clemence, Ray Kennedy and Phil Neal all also played, as did ex-red Joey Jones for the Welsh. A treble for the Saint 1964 - Ian St. John scored a hat-trick as we beat Mexican side Monterrey 3-0 in a friendly in Chicago. Heading east 1991 - We played our first ever game in Singapore, drawing 1-1 with Arsenal in the Caltex Cup, with Ian Rush on the scoresheet. The game went into extra-time, but we lost 4-3 on penalties in the National Stadium. 1961 - Alan A’Court netted for England in an FA Tour game in Singapore that ended in a 9-0 rout. Manchester City’s George Hannah bagged a treble. Facing the Mancs 1919 – We lost 1-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford in a game staged in aid of the National Footballers’ War Fund. In and outs 1909 – Welsh international right-half Maurice Parry left the reds to join Partick Thistle. He had scored four times in 221 reds games since arriving from Brighton United in August 1900. He later spent time coaching back at Anfield. 1935 - Right-back Bob Done was sold to Reading for £150. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games after signing from his hometown club Runcorn in April 1926. 1982 – Centre-half John McGregor signed from Queen's Park, failing to break through before moving on to Rangers in May 1987, with whom he won the League Cup. 2020 – First-team coach Jacques Crevoisier died. He worked under Gérard Houllier for two years after the departure of Patrice Bergues. On target for England 1986 - Future red Peter Beardsley grabbed his first full international goal as England beat Mexico 3-0 in a friendly in Los Angeles. Watford’s John Barnes also played. 1994 - Beardsley, then back with Newcastle United, also scored for England, playing alongside reds full-back Rob Jones, as England thumped Greece 5-0 in a friendly at Wembley. 2002 - Another future reds forward struck for England Under-21’s, as Peter Crouch grabbed his only goal at this level in a 2-1 defeat of host nation Switzerland in a European Championship Finals group game, with fellow future reds Paul Konchesky and Jermaine Pennant also featuring. Ex-red Rigobert Song also represented his country that day, as Cameroon lost a friendly 2-1 in Denmark. King Kenny for the Scots Kenny Dalglish twice represented his country against Wales in the British International Championships on this day in the 1970’s. 1975 - He featured in a 2-2 draw alongside John Toshack and ex-red Ted MacDougall at Ninian Park. Djibril the champion 1999 - Future red Djibril Cissé played as Auxerre beat Saint-Étienne at the Stade de France in a penalty shoot-out to claim the Coupe Nationale des Juniors, also known as the Challenge Emmanuel Gambardella. 2006 – Future reds centre-half Kolo Touré was on the losing side as Barcelona beat Arsenal 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League Final in Paris. Happy birthday cobber 1974 – Former Head of Fitness & Conditioning Darren Burgess was born in Sydney. He joined the club after the 2010 World Cup, but moved back down under in September 2012. On the move again 2005 - Ex-red Patrik Berger agreed to sign for Aston Villa from Portsmouth on a free transfer on 1st July. He had notched eight times in sixty Pompey games, but turned out just 32 times for Villa, netting twice. He was released in May 2008, returning home to join Sparta Praha. 2010 – Ex-reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević was released by Leicester City, having failed to make the first team since making his loan move permanent. 2012 – Ex-reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall signed for Morecambe, so far netting twice in 64 games for the League Two outfit. 2018 – Pepijn Lijnders was sacked as Manager of N.E.C. after they failed to gain promotion, soon returning to a coaching role with the reds. 2022 - Martin Škrtel announced his retirement from playing, having most recently appeared for Hajskala Ráztočno in his native Slovakia. He joined the reds from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m in January 2008 to become our most expensive defender to date. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. On the same day, future red Cody Gakpo won the Golden Shoe Award as the Eredivisie’s Footballer of the Year. 2023 – It was announced that forward Roberto Firmino and midfielders Naby Keïta, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would all be leaving the club at the end of the season. He failed to break through into the first team but went on to play League football with Huddersfield Town and Mansfield Town. 2015 - Future reds midfielder Marko Grujić signed a new three-year contract with Crvena Zvezda. However, he was transferred to the reds for £5.1m the following January. 2021 – New York-born midfielder Matteo Ritacci signed a new contract. In rides a knight 1958 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt signed for the reds from Stockton Heath. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games, and his 244 League goals remain a club record. He has the honour of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield, while his club medal haul includes two League championships, an FA Cup, FA Charity Shield and a Second Division title. Happy birthday Jim 1963 - Left-back Jim Beglin was born in Waterford in the Republic of Ireland. He was Bob Paisley’s last signing, from Shamrock Rovers for £20,000 in May 1983, and went on to score three times in 98 reds appearances. He helped us to four trophies in 1986, the League and FA Cup double, a shared FA Charity Shield and the Screen Sport Super Cup. After breaking his leg against Everton in January 1987, he moved on to Leeds United, and is now a regular TV commentator. In and out 2014 – Belgian forward Divock Origi signed from Lille OSC Métropole for £9.8m, immediately re-signing on loan for the following season. He netted sixteen times in total in 89 games for Les Dogues and struck 41 times in 175 reds games, including a crucial strike as we claimed the UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid in June 2019, as well as helping us to claim the Premier League title, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup before joining AC Milan in July 2022. 1974 – Keeper Peter McDonnell signed from Bury for £20,000 to become Bob Paisley’s first signing as boss. He never made the first team but sat on the bench at the European Cup Final in Rome in 1977, and on another 27 occasions, including both legs of the 1976 UEFA Cup Final, three FA Charity Shields and both legs of the UEFA Super Cup Final in 1977. He left Anfield to join Oldham Athletic in August 1978. 2015 – Defender Andre Wisdom joined Norwich City on loan, playing fourteen games for the Canaries in the following campaign. On the same day, future reds loanee centre-half Steven Caulker moved to Southampton from Queens Park Rangers on a temporary basis, but only played eight times before moving to Anfield the following January. 1930 – Scottish forward John McFarlane left the reds to sign for Halifax Town. He had signed from Aberdeen in November 1928 and became our then-youngest ever player when he debuted as we lost 2-1 at home to Everton in the League three months later, aged just seventeen years and 47 days. Adiós amigos 2013 – Pepe Reina joined Rafael Benítez’s SSC Napoli on loan, playing 41 times in his season in Italy. He helped them to claim the Coppa Italia and to finish third in Serie A. 2009 - Álvaro Arbeloa was sold to Real Madrid for £3.5m. He had struck twice in 98 reds games after signing from Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña for £2.64m in January 2007. 2005 - Antonio Núñez was sold to Real Club Celta de Vigo, netting twice in 32 games as they finished sixth in La Liga in his first season, after notching just once in 27 reds outings. Meanwhile, reserves winger Richie Partridge signed for Sheffield Wednesday. He struck once in twenty games for the Owls as they survived in the Championship, moving on to Rotherham United in June 2006. Roy’s winning start 2010 – Roy Hodgson took charge of the reds in a first-class game for the first time as we won 2-0 at Rabotnički Skopje in the Third Qualifying Round of the UEFA Europa League, thanks to a David N’Gog brace. Forwards David Amoo, Lauri Dalla Valle and Milan Jovanović all played their first reds games as Lucas made his debut as skipper. Stephen Darby played his sixth and last reds game. Less praised arrival 2002 - Young French keeper Patrice Luzi signed from AS Monaco on a free transfer. He made just one first-team appearance for the club, as substitute for the injured Jerzy Dudek in our long overdue League win at Chelsea in January 2004. Pepe ventures out 2006 - We lost 3-2 to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in Liechtenstein. Jermaine Pennant played his first reds game, while Robbie Fowler came on as a substitute for the injured Luis García, who had previously replaced him! Pepe Reina played some of the game in midfield, while our goals were scored by García and Craig Bellamy. 2017 – Left-back Andy Robertson played his first reds game as we won 3-0 at Hertha BSC Berlin in a game staged to celebrate both clubs’ 125th anniversaries. Dominic Solanke, Gini Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah were all on target. Back to Norway We have twice returned to Vålerenga on this day over the years. 1998 - We lost 2-0 to Rosenborg BK. 1999 - Karl-Heinz Riedle, Dietmar Hamann and Erik Meijer all netted in our 4-1 win over Vålerenga themselves to claim the Norway Cup, with the scoring completed by a Fredrik Kjølner own goal. Double debutants 2000 - Both Markus Babbel and Nick Barmby made their first reds appearances in a 4-1 win at SC Freiburg, with Barmby opening the scoring. Emile Heskey, Michael Owen and Steve Staunton also got on the scoresheet. We made a total of thirteen substitutions in the game, our second of that pre-season. A treble from the boss 1945 - Don Welsh netted a hat-trick as we drew 3-3 with a BIA 21st Army side in Hannover in the immediate aftermath of the war. He never made a senior reds appearance, but went on to take charge of the reds in 1951. In 1954 he became the first manager to lead us down a division for over fifty years, becoming the first ever reds boss to be sacked, in 1956. German trips 1994 - We won 1-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Firestone International Challenge Cup, thanks to a Neil Ruddock goal. 1995 - We returned to Germany, being trounced 5-0 by Ajax in the first round of the Mönchengladbach Trophy. Antonio the champion 2006 - Reds right-back Antonio Barragán was on the winning side as Spain Under-19’s claimed the European Championships by beating Scotland 2-1 in the Final in Poznan. This was his final cap at any level prior to moving to Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña. 2005 – Future red David Martin played for England Under-19’s for the eleventh and final time as they lost 3-1 to France in the European Championships Final in Belfast. Olympian reds 2012 – Future red Daniel Sturridge netted as Great Britain beat United Arab Emirates 3-1 in a Olympics Finals group game at Wembley, with Craig Bellamy and future reds Joe Allen and Steven Caulker also in action. This game was immediately preceded by Senegal’s 2-0 defeat of Uruguay, who were skippered by Luis Suárez and also included Sebastián Coates, with future red Sadio Mané on the winning side. Meanwhile, future red Mohamed Salah struck as Egypt were held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford by New Zealand. A wise double 2009 – Andre Wisdom struck twice as England Under-17’s trounced the Faroe Islands 8-0 in a Nordic Tournament group game in Trondheim. His clubmate Jack Robinson made his debut at this level, with Conor Coady and future red Conor Thomas also in action. 2014 – Trent Alexander-Arnold and Herbie Kane both played as England Under-17’s drew 1-1 with Finland in a Nordic Tournament group game in Denmark, with the English winning a penalty shoot-out 5-3. 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez netted for Uruguay Under-22’s in their 2-0 defeat of Peru in Lima in a Pan American Games group fixture. Other friendlies 2021 – We lost 4-3 to Hertha BSC Berlin in Innsbruck, with Sadio Mané, Takumi Minamino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target. 1989 - We beat Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 at Wembley in the first round of the Makita International Tournament that also featured Arsenal. John Barnes netted from the spot, with John Aldridge also on target. 1969 - We were held to a goalless draw at Blackpool. He played nine times this time around before moving on to Plymouth Argyle the following January. 2014 – Left-back Andy Robertson joined Hull City from Dundee United for £2.85m after five goals in 44 games for the Terrors. 2009 – Centre-back Kolo Touré joined Manchester City from Arsenal for £16m after netting fourteen times in 326 outings as he helped the Gunners to claim the League title, two FA Cups and two FA Community Shields. 1992 - Neil Ruddock re-signed for Tottenham Hotspur from Southampton for £750,000.
