He arrived on a free transfer from Bayern München in June 2000 and was a vital member of the treble-winning team bagging six goals in 73 games, until he was struck down by Guillain-Barré syndrome, moving to VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer in July 2004 after a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers. 1998 – Irish centre-half Conor Masterson was born in Celbridge, signing on from Lucan United for £900,000 on his sixteenth birthday. He was released in the summer of 2019 having failed to break through and is now with Gillingham. 1978 - Icelandic former reserves forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason was born in Keflavik. He never made an official senior appearance for the reds after signing from his hometown club in December 1997, returning there three years later after just three appearances on our bench in May 1998. Anfield christened 1888 - The first ever League game at Anfield was played as Everton beat Accrington 2-1. On the losing side 1894 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the Football League, going down 2-1 at home to Aston Villa in our third First Division game, having remained unbeaten through the whole of our debut season in the Second Division. Big Anfield wins 1917 - We thumped Port Vale 4-0 in a Wartime League game thanks to two from Thomas Bennett and further goals from Harry Lewis and Arthur Metcalf. 1979 - We beat Coventry City by the same score in the First Division, with David Johnson nabbing a brace and Jimmy Case and Kenny Dalglish also netting. 1928 - Gordon Hodgson struck twice with Dick Edmed, Jimmy McDougall and Tom Reid all also on target as we thumped Leicester City 6-3 in another top-flight match, with right-back Bob Done scoring the first of his thirteen reds goals. Future reds at the treble 1999 - Yossi Benayoun struck a hat-trick for Israel in their 8-0 trouncing of San Marino in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Tel-Aviv. On the same day, Christian Ziege bagged a hat-trick as Germany thumped Northern Ireland 4-0 in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Dortmund, with fellow future red Markus Babbel also in action. Award winners 2020 - Trent Alexander-Arnold was named PFA Young Player of the Year, with Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mané, Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk all also being named in the PFA Team of the Year, following our runaway League title win. Diogo Jota won his last cap as a Wolverhampton Wanderers player as Portugal won 2-0 in Sweden, with ex-red Conor Coady making his senior debut in England’s goalless draw in Denmark. Rhian Brewster played for England Under-21’s for the eighth and last time before leaving Anfield in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying win in Austria. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, future reds Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, and ex-reds Simon Mignolet and Raheem Sterling all also featured for their countries. 2018 – Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, with one of his goals coming as he converted the rebound from his own penalty, as he also had another spot-kick saved in Egypt’s 6-0 trouncing of Niger in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Alexandria. Xherdan Shaqiri netted while winning his first cap as a reds player as Switzerland thumped Iceland 6-0 in a UEFA Nations League group game in St. Gallen. Also on target was ex-red Luis Suárez who bagged a brace, including one from the spot, in Uruguay’s 4-1 friendly defeat of Mexico in Texas. Toni Silva won his first cap for Guinea-Bissau as a Mamelodi Sundowns player in their 2-2 draw in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Mozambique, who were being managed by Abel Xavier. Shanks departs 1974 - Bill Shankly resigned as Manager after fifteen years in charge, leaving reds fans bemused and shocked. He had led us to three League titles, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and the Second Division championship. His final significant act as boss was to sign Arsenal forward Ray Kennedy for a club record fee of £180,000, announced the very same day. Razor went on to net 72 times in 393 reds games, helping us to claim six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982. The Wright signing 1991 - Mark Wright arrived from Derby County for £2.2m. With Alan Hansen retired, Glenn Hysén soon to go and Gary Gillespie moving on to Celtic, we were in dire need of a quality centre-back, and Wright was drafted in after his impressive displays for England at the 1990 World Cup. He notched nine times in 210 reds appearances and lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992 before retiring from playing in August 1998. Yossi signs on 2007 - Yossi Benayoun signed from West Ham United for £5m. He bagged 29 goals in 134 reds games, including hat-tricks against Beşiktaş JK, Havant & Waterlooville and Burnley, leaving for Chelsea for the same fee in July 2010. On the same day, second string winger Adam Hammill joined Southampton on loan. He made 28 appearances for the Saints that season, half of them from off the bench, without getting on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, ex-red Vladimír Šmicer signed for SK Slavia Praha. He had bagged 24 goals in 79 reds games following his club record signing for £14m two years earlier. He was recovering from a second leg break at the time but recovered to notch sixteen times in 29 outings in his first campaign with L’OM, signing on permanently for £6.3m a year later. On the same day, Dietmar Hamann joined Manchester City from Bolton Wanderers for £300,000 after just one day at the Reebok Stadium! Happy birthdays 1958 - Former reds forward Michael Robinson was born in Leicester. Joe Fagan brought the Irish international to Anfield in August 1983 from Brighton & Hove Albion for £200,000. In his first season at the club he won the League title and European Cup, bagging a total of thirteen goals in 52 games before moving to Queens Park Rangers for £100,000 in December 1984. 1979 - Midfielder Danny Williams was born in Wrexham. He never broke through to the first team at Anfield and signed for his hometown club on a free transfer in March 1999. Best ever Aussie 2012 – Ex-reds left-winger Harry Kewell was named as Australia’s greatest ever player in a vote by Australian fans, players and media, having struck seventeen times in 58 senior internationals. He signed from Leeds United for £5m in July 2003, but his time at Anfield was somewhat disappointing due to a series of niggling injuries, as he bagged sixteen goals in 139 reds games before moving to Galatasaray as his contract expired in July 2008. He helped us to claim the Champions League and FA Cup in his reds career, although he limped out of both finals. Debutants galore 2008 - Keeper Diego Cavalieri, right-back Philipp Degen, centre-half Martin Kelly and forward Dani Pacheco all played their first reds games, as Yossi Benayoun bagged the only goal of our opening pre-season friendly at Tranmere Rovers. 2017 – Midfielder Pedro Chirivella struck his first reds goal as we thumped Tranmere Rovers 4-0 in our opening pre-season friendly at Prenton Park, with Marko Grujic also scoring as James Milner and Ben Woodburn both converted penalties. Keeper Kamil Grabara and forward Dominic Solanke both made their first senior appearances. 2022 – Midfielder Stefan Bajcetic, forward Fábio Carvalho, left-back Luke Chambers, forward Bobby Clark, right-back Isaac Mabaya and forward Darwin Núñez all appeared for the first time as we were thumped 4-0 by Manchester United in the Bangkok Century Cup in the Thai capital. On the world stage 2014 – Future red Gini Wijnaldum struck for the Netherlands as they beat host nation Brazil 3-0 in the World Cup Third Place Play-off in Brasilia, with ex-red Dirk Kuyt also featuring. 2007 - Young reds left-back Emiliano Insúa played for Argentina Under-20’s as they beat Poland 3-1 in Toronto to reach the Quarter-finals of the World Championship Finals. 1998 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel won his 101st and final cap for Brazil in their 3-0 defeat by France in the World Cup Final in the Stade de France. 1989 – Taffarel also played as Brazil beat Argentina 2-0 in a Copa América final round game in Rio de Janeiro. More arrivals 2002 - Bruno Cheyrou was confirmed as a reds player after receiving international clearance, joining from Lille OSC Métropole for £3.7m. He struck five times in 48 reds games before moving to Stade Rennais in June 2006, after previous loan spells with Olympique de Marseille and Girondins de Bordeaux. 2009 – Reserves left-back Chris Mavinga signed from Paris Saint-Germain. He failed to make the first team, being sold to Stade Rennais for £1m in July 2011. Mixed Euro fortunes 2012 - Suso was on the winning side as Spain Under-19’s beat France on penalties to reach the European Championships Final in Estonia. On the same day, Jack Robinson featured as England lost out to Greece at the same stage. 2015 – Future red Kostas Tsimikas played for Greece Under-19’s in their 2-0 home defeat by France in a group encounter. 2016 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-19’s as they beat France 2-1 in a group game in Germany. Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter both also featured. Bowyer on his way 2002 - It was announced that a fee had been agreed with Leeds United for the controversial capture of midfielder Lee Bowyer. He was expected to sign on at Anfield the following week, although the deal fell through after Gérard Houllier grew uncomfortable with the player’s attitude and level of commitment to Liverpool. Red learnings 2000 - Liverpool’s ground-breaking Study Support centre in the Kop stand was officially opened by Professor Michael Barber, Head of the Government’s Standards & Effectiveness Unit for Education. Reds trebles 1963 - Roger Hunt netted four as we thumped Stoke City 6-1 at Anfield to give Bill Shankly his hundredth victory as reds boss, in his 188th game in charge. Ian St. John and Alf Arrowsmith also scored in one of eight meetings with the Potters on this day in history. The scores were level at 1-1 at half-time, with five of our goals coming at the Anfield Road end in the second period. John Ritchie struck the first of his five goals against the reds. 1928 - Gordon Hodgson scored a hat-trick in his hundredth League game as we trounced Burnley 8-0 at Anfield. Jimmy Clark and Dick Edmed both bagged braces with Bill Salisbury netting the other. The score could have been far greater as Bob Done missed a penalty, we had three goals dubiously ruled out for offside, hit the crossbar three times and the posts twice each. Happy birthdays 1878 - Centre-back Alex Raisbeck was born in Wallacestone, near Polmont in Stirlingshire. He signed from Stoke for £350 in May 1898 and struck nineteen times in 341 games in eleven years with the reds, becoming our first skipper to lift the League title, in 1901. He won a further League title five years later, as well as a Second Division championship, and returned to the club as scout in 1939 until his death ten years later. 1903 - South African goalkeeper Arthur Riley was born in Boksburg in the Transvaal. He became our first ever foreign signing in August 1925, making 338 reds appearances before taking over from his father as the club’s head groundsman. 1920 – Scottish left-winger Tommy McLeod was born in Musselburgh. He joined the reds from the Army in October 1945, but only made seven senior appearances before joining Chesterfield in June 1951. 1880 - Defender Phil Bratley was born in Rawmarsh, Yorkshire. He only played thirteen first-team games after signing from Barnsley in 1914. He returned to Rotherham County, one of his former clubs, the following year, but was killed in action during the First World War. 2005 – Right-winger Ranel Young was born in Huddersfield. He joined the Academy as an Under-12 from his hometown club, signing professional terms in May 2023. Double debutants 1953 - Full-back Frank Lock and forward John Evans both made their debuts in a goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion at Anfield. He played eight times for the Bantams before joining Southend United as Player/Coach. 2012 – Future reds Assistant Manager Sean O'Driscoll was sacked as Nottingham Forest boss after just five months in charge, having led them to ten victories in 26 games. Birth and death 2006 – Future red Charlie Adam became a father to Jack. 2010 – Utility player Bill Jones died at the Countess of Chester Hospital. He signed from Hayfield St. Matthews in September 1938 and scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. His grandson Rob later represented the reds in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s.

Happy birthdays 1947 - Winger Steve Heighway was born in Dublin. He signed from Skelmersdale United in May 1970 and made 475 appearances for the reds, scoring 76 times and helping us to win four League titles, two European Cups, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, before moving to the USA to sign for Minnesota Kicks in 1981. He later returned to the club in 1989 as Youth Development Officer, becoming Academy Director before leaving at the end of the 2006/07 season. He scored on his 25th birthday as we won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur, with Kevin Keegan also netting and Martin Chivers bagging one of his seven goals against the reds. 1981 - Xabi Alonso was born in Tolosa. He arrived from Real Sociedad for £10.7m in August 2004, and bagged nineteen goals in 210 reds games, including two strikes from inside his own half, helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and FA Community Shield. He moved on to Real Madrid for £30m in August 2009. 1933 - Forward Alan Arnell was born in Chichester. He struck 35 times in 75 reds games having arrived from non-league Worthing in March 1953. He stayed with the club until February 1961 when he was sold to Tranmere Rovers. 1883 – Inside-forward Tommy Green was born in Rock Ferry. He signed from New Brighton in September 1901, netting once in seven outings before moving to Swindon Town in April 1903. Euro joy 1964 - We beat Belgian champions Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht 3-0 at Anfield in a European Cup Second Round first leg tie, thanks to goals from Ian St. John, Roger Hunt and Ron Yeats, who notched his first goal at Anfield. Roger’s treble 1961 - Roger Hunt bagged a hat-trick with Jimmy Melia adding a brace in a 5-0 drubbing of Swansea Town at Anfield. This was Sir Roger’s third treble of the season. Robbie’s first farewell 2001 - Robbie Fowler played the final game in his first spell with the club as Emile Heskey handed us a 1-0 home win over Sunderland, breaking his duck after seventeen games without a goal. Robbie was sacrificed at half-time following the dismissal of Dietmar Hamann for a two-footed tackle on Bernt Haas, joining Leeds United four days later. Tons up 1933 – Gordon Hodgson played his 300th reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by West Bromwich Albion. Sam English netted our goal. 2023 - Joël Matip reached a double century of outings for the club as we held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at their Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland struck in the first half, with Trent Alexander-Arnold bagging a late leveller. Youngsters celebrating 1988 - Jay Spearing was born in Wallasey. The central midfielder graduated to Melwood in the summer of 2007 after captaining the reds as they retained the FA Youth Cup that May. He made 55 senior appearances without finding the back of the net, moving on to Bolton Wanderers in August 2013 after a season on loan with the Trotters. 1988 – Ex-reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall was born in Liverpool. He was part of FA Youth Cup winning sides in consecutive years, scoring in the first leg of the 2006 Final, and made his first appearance with the first eleven in our pre-season friendly at Wrexham in July 2006. He moved to Bradford City in May 2010 after a successful loan spell, moving on to Morecambe two years later. Mixed fortunes against Wolves We have faced Wolverhampton Wanderers three times in the top flight on this day in history, winning one, drawing one and losing the other. 1899 - We drew 1-1 at Anfield with inside-right Johnny Walker on target. At the World Cup 2022 – Future red Cody Gakpo struck as the Netherlands were held to a 1-1 draw in a World Cup group game in Qatar, with Virgil van Dijk skippering the side. On the same day, Jordan Henderson and future red Raheem Sterling played in England’s goalless draw with the USA, while Joe Allen won his first cap in his second spell with Swansea City as Wales lost 2-0 to Iran, with ex-reds Danny Ward, Neco Williams and Harry Wilson all also featuring. Not going to the Far East 2001 - Future red Harry Kewell played as Australia lost 3-0 in Uruguay in the second leg of their World Cup play-off, to fall at the final hurdle 3-1 on aggregate. Youngsters in action 2005 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin became the youngest ever Bundesliga goalscorer, aged seventeen years and 81 days, scoring for Borussia Dortmund against 1. FC Nürnberg. On the same day, future reds loanee Victor Moses won his only cap for England Under-16’s in their 2-1 victory over Scotland. 2022 – Future red Trey Nyoni played for England Under-16’s in their 2-1 friendly win over Germany in Spain. Also in international action 1970 – Emlyn Hughes played for England in their 3-1 friendly defeat of East Germany at Wembley. 1990 – Future red Jari Litmanen played as Finland drew a European Championships qualifier 1-1 in Malta.

In comes Chico 1981 - Steve Nicol signed from Ayr United for £300,000. He played 468 times across the defence and midfield, scoring 46 times and helping us to four League titles, European Cup, three FA Cups and an FA Charity Shield, as well as being named the Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 1989. He left the club to sign for Notts County on a free transfer in January 1995. 1983 – He grabbed his first reds goal, a late winner in our 1-0 League victory at Queens Park Rangers. Lawler leaves 1975 – Full-back Chris Lawler left the reds to join Portsmouth, then managed by Ian St. John. He signed pro terms on his seventeenth birthday in October 1960, striking 61 times in 549 reds appearances as he helped us to win two League titles, an FA Cup, UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield. He later returned to the club in the 1980’s as Reserve Team Manager. Reds in Moscow 2002 - We became the first English team to beat Spartak Moskva on their own patch as we came from behind through a Michael Owen hat-trick of header, left-foot and right-foot shots handed us a 3-1 Champions League group win. Grégory Vignal suffered the rare indignity of coming on as a substitute, and then later himself being substituted. 1992 - David Burrows had to play the last six minutes of our European Cup Winners’ Cup game at the same club in goal, after Bruce Grobbelaar was sent off with the score at 2-2. He had signed from St. Cuthbert Wanderers in November 1913, netting once in eight outings. Most recently 2016 – Adam Lallana played his hundredth game for the club as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in a League encounter at Anfield. Sadio Mané and Philippe Coutinho put us two goals ahead at the break, with Gareth McAuley nabbing a late consolation for the Baggies. 2017 – We lost 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium in front of a ten Premier League record crowd of 80,827. Ex-Canary Craig Bellamy opened the scoring on the stroke of half time, but Grant Holt equalised after an hour. Luis Suárez had eleven shots on goal as we failed to make our domination count. Doni’s day 1979 – Former substitute keeper Alexander Doni was born in Jundiaí, São Paulo. He arrived on a free transfer from Roma in July 2011 and played four senior games, as well as sitting on the bench on another 46 occasions before joining Botafogo in his native Brazil for free. He retired from playing in August 2013 after a series of heart problems. More births and a death 2009 – Full-back Ray Lambert died. He joined the reds when he was just thirteen and went on to make 341 first-team appearances, netting just twice, including being part of the 1947 title-winning side. He also won five caps for Wales. 1938 - George Gillett Jr. was born in Racine, Wisconsin. The then owner of the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team brought fellow American Tom Hicks on board and took over the club in February 2007. He was eventually forced to sell up in October 2010. 1966 - Mark Seagraves was born in Bootle. He only made two reds appearances before joining Manchester City in September 1987. He was Reserve Team Coach at Derby County until December 2008, working with fellow ex-red Paul Jewell. 2004 – Spanish midfielder Stefan Bajčetić was born in Vigo. He arrived from Real Club Celta de Vigo for €250,000 in February 2021, debuting in our 9-0 trouncing of Bournemouth in August 2022. He struck once in nineteen senior outings in his breakthrough campaign. Merseyside rivalry on the international stage 1928 - Dixie Dean scored as England beat Elisha Scott’s Northern Ireland 2-1 at Goodison Park. Thousands of games 1955 - We played our 2,000th League game, winning our Second Division encounter at Bury 4-1, thanks to a brace apiece from Alan Arnell and Billy Liddell. 2006 - We deservedly lost 2-0 at Manchester United in what was our 5,000th official match, and Steven Gerrard’s 350th reds game. Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand struck the goals. 1927 – Right-half Jock McNab played his 200th League game for the reds as we lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers. Dick Edmed put us in front, but Harold Blackmore netted the first of his five goals against the reds and Ted Vizard also struck. Also in Europe 1975 - We won 3-1 at Real Sociedad in our UEFA Cup Second Round first leg encounter, with Steve Heighway, Ian Callaghan and Phil Thompson all on the scoresheet. This was an especially notable result as the Spanish outfit had been unbeaten at home in the League for the previous two years. Brendan’s big day 1973 – Ex-reds boss Brendan Rodgers was born in Carnlough, Country Antrim, Northern Ireland. He became a father for the first time, to Anton, on his twentieth birthday. He took over at Anfield in June 2012, leading us to 85 victories in 166 games in charge before being sacked in October 2015. Rushie’s first treble 1982 - Ian Rush scored a second-half hat-trick at Meadow Lane, his first of sixteen for the reds, as we beat Notts County 4-0 in the League. Ronnie Whelan opened the scoring before the break, while the home side missed a penalty through Ray O’Brien. We had started the day in seventh place in the League, but went on to claim the title for a thirteenth time that season. Fortunately, we won the replay three days later in Cumbria. Do one Ron 1994 - Ronnie Rosenthal was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 after 22 goals in 97 reds games. He stayed at White Hart Lane for three and a half years, helping them to an FA Cup win at Anfield in March 1995. Fernando’s farewell 2011 – Fernando Torres had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside as he played his 142nd and last reds game. John Pantsil’s own goal was the only score of our League meeting with Fulham at Anfield, postponed from the previous month. Cup disaster at the Bridge 1997 - We took a 2-0 half-time lead at Stamford Bridge in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, with goals from Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore. However, Chelsea stormed back in the second half through one of Mark Hughes’s nine goals against us, a Gianfranco Zola strike and a brace from Gianluca Vialli to win 4-2. Worst ever in the cup 1946 - Bolton Wanderers inflicted our worst ever FA Cup defeat on us as we lost 5-0 at Burnden Park in a Fourth Round first leg match, with keeper Alf Hobson playing his 28th and last reds game and wing-half Harry Kaye making his debut. Ray Westwood grabbed a hat-trick, one of only two we have ever conceded in the FA Cup and the last of his nine strikes past us, with the legendary Nat Lofthouse bagging the first two of his eight goals against the reds. 1929 - We faced Wanderers again at this stage of the competition, being held to a goalless draw at Anfield. He went on to play 117 times after signing from Luton Town in March 1899, including every game in our first League championship winning season in 1900/01. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in January 1951, but only made twelve senior appearances before moving to Shrewsbury Town in July 1954, for whom he played 237 League games. John’s bow 1907 - Outside-right John McKenna played his only reds game in our 2-0 home defeat of Birmingham City. Bill McPherson and Jack Parkinson struck the goals. Other cup wins 1980 - We won 2-0 at Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup Fourth Round just four days after losing there in the first leg of our League Cup Semi-final, with Terry McDermott netting from the spot to add to a Kenny Dalglish goal. We went out to Arsenal in the Semi-final that season, after three replays. 1938 - A Tom Johnson own goal handed us victory in our Fourth Round replay at Anfield against Sheffield United.
