Happy birthdays 1934 - Left-winger Alan A’Court was born in Rainhill. He signed for free from Prescot Cables in September 1952 and scored 63 times in 381 reds games, helping us to the Second Division title in 1962, as well as representing England at the 1958 World Cup in his time at Anfield. He left to join Tranmere Rovers in October 1964. 1949 - Forward Alun Evans was born in Bewdley, near Kidderminster. He was Britain’s first £100,000 teenager when he signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1968, our new record signing. He scored 33 goals in 111 reds games, including appearing in the 1971 FA Cup Final, before being sold to Aston Villa for £70,000 in June 1972. 1911 - Forward Harold Barton was born in Leigh in Lancashire. He signed for free from Whitegate Juniors in November 1928, and famously bagged a treble in our 7-4 derby win at Anfield in February 1933, netting a total of 29 goals in 109 reds games before joining Sheffield United in June 1934. 1994 – Young full-back Ryan McLaughlin was born in Belfast. He played his first game for the first team against Roma in Boston in July 2012, but moved on to Oldham Athletic in August 2016 having been released without making a senior appearance. 1998 – South African winger Bob Priday died. His chances were limited to forty reds games after he made the switch from Cape Town City in December 1945, as he was behind Billy Liddell in the pecking order. He notched seven times while at Anfield, before moving on to Blackburn Rovers in March 1949. Another trophy in the cabinet 1986 - We beat Everton 4-1 at Goodison Park to claim the Screen Sport Super Cup, thanks to a 7-2 aggregate scoreline. Ian Rush bagged a treble, with Steve Nicol also netting that night and Graeme Sharp striking a late consolation, one of his seven derby goals. Mark Lawrenson was making his 300th reds appearance. Rushie off the mark 1981 - Substitute Ian Rush scored his first reds goal as we beat Finnish champions Oulun Palloseura 7-0 in a European Cup First Round fixture, to progress 8-0 on aggregate. A minute’s silence was held before the game, in remembrance of Bill Shankly’s death the day before. Kenny Dalglish opened the scoring with a diving header, our hundredth European Cup goal. Terry McDermott bagged a brace with Ray Kennedy, David Johnson and sub Mark Lawrenson all also on target, the latter with his first reds strike. Anfield trebles 1975 - John Toshack bagged a treble of headers as we beat Hibernian 3-1 in the second leg of our UEFA Cup First Round tie, to progress 3-2 on aggregate. Winger Alex Edwards netted Hibs’ consolation. 1978 - Jimmy Case netted all the goals in our 3-0 League defeat of Bolton Wanderers, although the game was somewhat spoiled by a smoke bomb that was thrown from the Anny Road end into the Bolton goal area. Kenny Dalglish was stand-in captain in the absence of Emlyn Hughes. 1950 - We hosted the Trotters in another top-flight match, with Jack Balmer netting twice and Jimmy Payne also on target as we drew 3-3. Nat Lofthouse struck one of his eight goals against the reds, with Willie Moir scoring one of his five past us and Harry Webster also on the scoresheet. Catalogue of errors in north London 2023 – We lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in a game marred by VAR errors. Luis Diaz had a perfectly legitimate goal disallowed for a non-existent offside before Curtis Jones was harshly sent off. Son Heung-min put the home side in front, the sixth of his seven goals past us to date, but Cody Gakpo levelled in first-half stoppage time. Diogo Jota as also dismissed after the break, with this later being ruled as an incorrect decision, with Spurs claiming victory thanks to an injury-time Joël Matip own goal. Nous sommes les champions du monde 2001 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both netted for the French Under-17’s in their 3-0 defeat of Nigeria in the Final of the World Championships in Trinidad. 2016 – Future red Dominik Szoboszlai scored from the spot while captaining Hungary Under-17’s as they beat Denmark 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier. On the same day, ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat Greece 3-0 in a friendly in Croatia, with Rhian Brewster featuring. Perfect start ends 1893 - We dropped our first point in the Football League as we were held 1-1 by Notts County at Trent Bridge, after winning our first four games. Hugh McQueen was on target for the reds. Red centurions 1972 – Left-back Alec Lindsay played his hundredth reds game as we won 2-1 at Leeds United. Mick Jones but the home side in front with one of his seven strikes past us, before Larry Lloyd and Phil Boersma secured the points. 1967 – We beat Stoke City 2-1 at Anfield with Peter Dobing opening the scoring with one of his eight goals against the reds. Peter Thompson netted, with Tommy Smith scoring the winner from the spot as Ron Yeats played his 300th reds game. Off to a winning start 1911 - Left-back Bob Pursell made his reds bow in our 2-1 win at Sunderland. John McDonald scored his fourth and last goal for the club, with Bobby Robinson also on target as Jackie Mordue grabbed one of his six goals against the reds. Other European fixtures 2010 – We held Utrecht to a dour goalless draw in our UEFA Europa League encounter in the Netherlands. 1997 - We drew 0-0 at home with Celtic, although this was still enough to take us through to the Second Round of the UEFA Cup on the away goals rule. 1969 - We won 4-0 at Dundalk, thanks to a Peter Thompson brace and goals from Bobby Graham and Ian Callaghan, to go through to the Second Round of the Fairs Cup, as we blooded youngsters including Phil Boersma, Ray Clemence and Larry Lloyd. Cally’s goal was our first European strike from a substitute, after he had replaced Peter Thompson at half time. Mixed derby fortunes 1933 - We beat the Blues 3-2 at Anfield, with Berry Nieuwenhuys scoring his first reds goal. Alf Hanson, Sam English scored, with future red Tommy Johnson nabbing the last of his eight goals against us, with Tommy White netting the last of his four goals past us. 1905 - We lost 4-2 at Goodison in another top-flight encounter, with Joe Hewitt netting both our goals. Jimmy Settle struck one of his eleven goals against us, with Walter Abbott, Harold Hardman and Jack Sharp all also on target as left-back David Murray played his fifteenth and last reds game. For Rab 1904 - A testimonial match for right-half Rab Howell was staged at Anfield. John Carlin netted both goals as we drew 2-2 with Preston North End. He was the only true Romany to play for England and played 67 reds games without scoring between April 1898 and June 1901, but was forced to retire after breaking his leg while a Preston player. 1901 – We beat the Lillywhites 2-1 in a Lancashire Senior Cup game at Anfield, thanks to goals from Andy McGuigan and Sam Raybould. 1929 – We won 2-0 in a Second Round tie in the same competition at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson bagging a brace. Representing the League 1912 - Winger Arthur Goddard and full-back Ephraim Longworth both played for the Football League in their 2-1 defeat of a Southern League team at Old Trafford. Twice each against the Lancastrian rivals We have twice faced both Blackburn Rovers and Burnley on this day in history, winning just once. 1899 - We lost 2-0 at Ewood Park in a First Division meeting with Rovers 1922 – We lost by the same score at Turf Moor, with forward Dick Forshaw playing his hundredth League game for the club. 1939 - Phil Taylor struck twice with Jack Balmer, Willie Fagan and Berry Nieuwenhuys also netting as we triumphed 5-0 in a friendly at Blackburn. 1916 - The other game was a goalless Wartime League match against the Clarets at Anfield. Beaten at the Reebok 2006 - We lost 2-0 at Bolton Wanderers, with the home side opening the scoring from a free-kick incorrectly awarded against Pepe Reina for handball. The reds also hit the post through Xabi Alonso, with Gary Speed and Iván Campo on target for the home side. First cap 2012 - Future red Marko Grujić won his only Under-17's cap as Serbia trounced Belarus 7-0 in a friendly in Borisov. Signing on 2008 – Finnish reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle signed professional terms. He made just one senior appearance before moving to Fulham in August 2010 as part of the deal that brought left-back Paul Konchesky to Anfield. 1971 - Keeper Frank Lane signed from Tranmere Rovers for £15,000, but only made two first-team appearances, deputising for Ray Clemence. Unfortunately, he distinguished himself for all the wrong reasons on his debut in September 1972 by safely catching a deep cross from Derby County’s Alan Hinton and then stepping backwards over his own goal-line, to help us on our way to a 2-1 defeat. Loaned out 2011 - Jonjo Shelvey joined Blackpool on a temporary basis, netting six times in ten outings before being recalled two months later. 2004 - Reserves defender Jon Otsemobor joined Crewe Alexandra on loan. He played fifteen times for the Alex before returning to Anfield. He later returned to Gresty Road after a brief spell with Rotherham United. All change 1985 - Future reds winger Jimmy Carter joined Queens Park Rangers from Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He did not make the first team at Loftus Road, moving on to Millwall for £15,000 in March 1987. 1998 - Former youth winger Stuart Quinn, who featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup campaign in 1996, signed for Southport from Altrincham. He only made three appearances for the Haig Avenue side. 1994 - Ex-loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Peterborough United on loan from Stoke City, playing six times for the Posh. Youngsters on target 2006 - Future red András Simon netted for Hungary Under-17’s as they beat Bulgaria 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Armenia. 2005 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin struck as Turkey Under-17’s lost their World Cup Semi-final 4-3 to Brazil in Peru. Other reds games 2001 – John Arne Riise and Danny Murphy netted as we won 2-0 at Newcastle United. 1961 – We thumped Charlton Athletic 4-0 in a Second Division encounter at The Valley. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Kevin Lewis and Ian St. John also on target. 1895 – We beat Burton Wanderers 4-1 in a Second Division meeting in L4 with Harry Bradshaw and Frank Becton each netting twice. Also in international action 2009 – Keeper Dean Bouzanis played for Australia Under-20’s as they lost 3-0 to Costa Rica in the World Championship Finals in Egypt, while Péter Gulácsi and András Simon both featured as Hungary thumped South Africa 4-0. 2018 – Ki-Jana Hoever played for the Dutch Under-17’s in their 6-0 thumping of Montenegro in a European Championships qualifier in Sweden. 2022 - Darwin Núñez scored his first goal as a reds player as Uruguay beat Canada 2-0 in a friendly in Slovakia. Also in action were James Balagizi, Owen Beck, Alisson Becker, Conor Bradley, Luke Chambers, Luis Díaz, Harvey Elliott, Melkamu Frauendorf, Lee Jonas, Diogo Jota, Isaac Mabaya, Kostas Tsimikas, ex-reds Rhian Brewster, Steven Caulker, Sadio Mané, Takumi Minamino, Xherdan Shaqiri and Luis Suárez, and future reds Wataru Endō and Alexis Mac Allister, with Steve Clarke and Rigobert Song both taking charge of their countries. -
Happy birthday Joël 1991 – Centre-half Joël Matip was born in Bochum, Germany. He signed on a free transfer from Schalke 04 in July 2016, bagging eleven goals in 201 games for the reds as he helped us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. Into the Champions League 2001 - We played our first ever game in the new format of the UEFA Champions League, registering our record equal away win in Europe to date as we thumped Finnish side Haka 5-0, thanks to a hat-trick from Michael Owen, our first away from home in Europe, and strikes from Emile Heskey and Sami Hyypiä. Stevie the best 2013 - Steven Gerrard came first in the club’s second ‘100 Players Who Shook The Kop’ poll, beating Kenny Dalglish, who had taken the honour the first time around in October 2006. Forward signings 1983 – Forward Michael Robinson signed from Brighton & Hove Albion for £200,000. In his first season at the club he won the League title and European Cup, bagging a total of thirteen goals in 52 games before moving to Queens Park Rangers for £100,000 in December 1984. 1991 - Mark Walters officially signed from Rangers for a £1.25m fee, going on to score nineteen times in 124 reds appearances. He had been a big success in Scotland, but could not reproduce that at Anfield, and eventually moved to Southampton in January 1996. Djimi off 2006 - Djimi Traoré was sold to Charlton Athletic for £2m after one goal in 141 reds games, in which he helped us to claim the Champions League in 2005. He appeared just thirteen times for the Addicks before moving on to Portsmouth in January 2006. On the same day, reserves centre-back Danny O’Donnell joined Crewe Alexandra on loan. He played 31 times for the Alex that season, making the switch permanent in June 2007. Happy birthday Julian 1968 - Former left-back Julian Dicks was born in Bristol. He signed from West Ham United for £1.5m in September 1993 and has the honour of being the last red to score in front of the standing Kop, before he returned to West Ham United in May 1994 after three goals in 28 reds games. Farewell Nessie 2002 - Agnes ‘Nessie’ Shankly’s funeral was held in Liverpool. She had been Bill Shankly’s wife throughout his career and was well-loved by many of the players and staff at Anfield. Wembley disappointment 1992 - Paul Stewart made his first-class debut for the reds as we lost 4-3 to Leeds United in the FA Charity Shield at Wembley, thanks to an Eric Cantona hat-trick, the first of his five goals past us, with Tony Dorigo also on target. Ian Rush and Dean Saunders netted, as we also benefited from a late Gordon Strachan own goal. Pepe wins again 2007 - Pepe Reina was awarded the Barclays Golden Glove Award for most clean sheets for the second successive season. He went on to claimed it twice more during his time in England. 2014 – He was sold to Bayern München for £2m after 177 clean sheets in 394 reds games since signing from Villarreal for £6m in July 2005. He had helped us to claim the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield. Bonjour and au revoir 2003 - Young French centre-back Carl Medjani signed from Saint-Étienne on a free transfer. He never made the reds first team, moving back to his native land to join Lorient in July 2006 after a previous loan spell. 2005 - He signed for Metz on loan, making 25 senior appearances. 2014 – Left-back Aly Cissokho signed for Aston Villa, having spent the previous season on loan from Valencia at Anfield. On the same day, Spanish midfielder Gerardo Bruna signed for Tranmere Rovers, while centre-forward Adam Morgan joined St. Johnstone on loan from Yeovil Town. 2010 – Right-back Philipp Degen joined VfB Stuttgart on loan, but he could only make eight first-team appearances as he once again suffered with injuries. 1941 – Defender Fred Finney signed on as an amateur in August 1941, but played just two senior reds games, both in the space of a week against Chester in January 1946. Barmby on the move Nick Barmby twice changed clubs on this day over the years. 1995 - He joined Middlesbrough from Tottenham Hotspur for £5.25m. 2002 - He left Anfield for Leeds United in a £2.75m deal after eight goals in 58 reds games. Jock remembered 1998 - We played Celtic in a friendly to commemorate the opening of their Jock Stein Stand. Øyvind Leonhardsen grabbed the only goal of the game. German friendlies We have twice played at Hamburger SV’s Volksparkstadion on this day over the years. 1967 - Ian St. John grabbed a brace as we drew 2-2. 1986 - We lost 1-0. 1978 - We drew 1-1 at Bayern München, with David Fairclough on the scoresheet. Reds in Scandinavia 1988 - John Aldridge and Ronnie Whelan were on target as we drew 2-2 at Norwegian side Tromsø. 1990 - John Barnes struck the only goal of the game against a Stockholm Alliance XI in Solna. Other friendlies 2021 – Diogo Jota struck as we drew 1-1 with Athletic Bilbao in an Anfield friendly in front of a 75% capacity crowd, post-COVID. 2009 - We lost 2-1 at Anfield to Club Atlético de Madrid in our final pre-season friendly, with Lucas notching for the reds after we went in two goals down at the break, also suffering an injury to Jamie Carragher. Ex-red Florent Sinama-Pongolle came off the bench for the visitors to a warm reception during the second half. 2008 – Andriy Voronin bagged the only goal of the game in the final minute as we entertained S.S. Lazio at Anfield in our final pre-season friendly. 1984 - Alan Kennedy struck to hand us victory over Swiss side BSC Young Boys in the first round of the Phillips Trophy at their w***dorf Stadion in Bern, which we went on to win two days later. 1982 - Phil Neal netted from the spot, with Ian Rush on target twice as we won 3-0 at Third Division Portsmouth. 1975 - Jimmy Case scored in our last pre-season friendly as we drew 1-1 at Dutch side Roda JC in a game that marked the official switching on of the new floodlights at the Gemeentelijk Sportpark Kaalheide. Adam on target 2010 – Adam Morgan netted for England Under-17’s as they beat Sweden 2-1 in the Final of the Nordic Tournament in Finland. More beer 2002 - A new three-year sponsorship deal with Carlsberg, worth up to £15m, was announced. Clem honoured 2001 - It was announced that Ray Clemence had won a prestigious UEFA award to mark his achievement of playing more than a century of UEFA club competition games. On the move 2008 – Ex-reds defender Stephen Wright signed for Coventry City after spending much of the previous season at Stoke City. On the same day, Jari Litmanen re-signed for Lahti in his native Finland. He netted four goals in fourteen League outings before signing a one-year deal in April 2009. 2001 - Reserves defender Alan Navarro joined Crewe Alexandra for his second loan spell at Gresty Road. He made nine appearances to add to the eight he had made there at the end of the previous season. On the same day, midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Arsenal from Southampton for a reported £12m, going on to bag twenty goals in 198 games for the Gunners before moving to Anfield for £35m in August 2017. 2012 – Young forward Henoc Mukendi joined Northampton Town on loan, netting once in thirteen outings, although ten of these were from the bench. 2016 – Full-back Ryan McLaughlin signed for Oldham Athletic, having been released by the reds at the end of the previous campaign. He scored twice in 43 outings in his first season with the Latics. 2018 – Ex-reds left-back Brad Smith joined Seattle Sounders on loan from Bournemouth. 2019 – Ovie Ejaria returned to Reading for a second loan spell, netting three times in 39 outings as the Royals finished in mid-table in the Championship. On the same day, keeper Scott Carson joined Manchester City on loan from Derby County, but never made a first-team appearance. Meanwhile, Andy Carroll re-signed for Newcastle United, failing to notch in 21 games in his first campaign back on Tyneside. 2022 – Midfielder Conor Coady joined Everton on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, netting twice in 25 outings as he helped them to avoid relegation. 2023 – Polish keeper Jakub Ojrzyński joined Den Bosch on loan, playing eleven senior games for the Dutch side. A century of the League 1987 - Peter Beardsley and ex-red Steve Ogrizovic both played as a Football League side beat a Rest of the World eleven that included future red Glenn Hysén 3-0 in the Football League Centenary Classic at Wembley Stadium. Rickie the dad again 2013 – Future reds forward Rickie Lambert became a father for the third time, to Bella Rose. Also in international action 1993 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared as Brazil were held to a 1-1 friendly draw by Mexico in Maceió. 1991 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen played for Norway in their 2-1 friendly defeat by Sweden in Oslo. 1984 – Jim Beglin featured in the Republic of Ireland’s goalless draw with Mexico in Dublin. -
Tom takes charge 1896 - Tom Watson was appointed as reds boss, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death in May 1915. Happy McBirthday 1891 - Legendary left-back Donald McKinlay was born in Newton, Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Newton Villa in January 1910, making 434 appearances before joining Prescot Cables in July 1929. He scored 34 times, including one struck spectacularly from ten yards inside his own half at West Ham United in January 1926! He skippered us to two League titles, and also played in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. Off on loan 2008 – Two young centre-backs left the club to go out on loan. Jack Hobbs joined Leicester City, turning out 49 times as they claimed the League One title before signing on permanently in April 2009. Meanwhile, Godwin Antwi only played seven games for Tranmere Rovers, later joining Hereford United for another loan spell before leaving the reds for good for Vejle Boldklub in Denmark in December 2009. Red bows 2012 – Full-back Ryan McLaughlin played his first reds game as we lost 2-1 to Roma in a friendly at the Fenway Park baseball stadium in Boston on our North American tour, with Charlie Adam on target. 1972 - Peter Cormack made his first appearance as we won 2-0 at Chester in a game played behind closed doors. Brian Hall and Steve Heighway struck the goals. Anfield departures 1958 - Outside-right Brian Jackson was sold to Port Vale for £1,700. He had struck eleven times in 133 reds games since his arrival in November 1951 from Leyton Orient for £6,500 plus forward Don Woan. 1934 – Forward Dave Wright was sold to Hull City for £1,000 after bagging 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games since signing from Sunderland in March 1930. 1998 - Reserves winger Nicky Rizzo left Anfield for Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He netted four times in 41 games for the Eagles, before joining Italian side Ternana two years later. 2016 – Welsh midfielder Joe Allen was sold to Stoke City for £13m after seven goals in 132 reds games since his £15m arrival from Swansea City in August 2012. On the same day, ex-reds midfielder Sammy Lee was appointed Assistant Manager of England, under Sam Allardyce. Signing on 1892 – Keeper Billy McOwen arrived from Darwen. He kept eleven clean sheets in 27 appearances, helping us to claim the Second Division title. He left the reds to sign as an amateur for Blackpool in July 1894, as well as returning to his dentistry career. 1986 - Barry Venison signed from Sunderland for £200,000. He netted three goals in 158 appearances for the reds, winning two League titles, an FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. New stadium plans 2007 - New designs for the new stadium in Stanley Park were unveiled, coinciding with the submission of the official planning application to Liverpool City Council. This was to be a 60,000-seater stadium, with 18,000 in the Kop. However, this project has since been firmly shelved. Stevie honoured 2008 - Steven Gerrard was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University. The reds go broadband 2000 - It was announced that Granada Media and Liverpool FC had agreed to form a new joint venture company, Liverpool FC Broadband, to exploit our new-media and commercial rights, including delayed online coverage of Premiership matches. God the champion 1993 - Robbie Fowler helped England Under-18’s to claim the European Championships for the ninth and final time to date. Tottenham Hotspur’s Darren Caskey struck the only goal of the game against Turkey at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, with the England side also including future stars such as Sol Campbell, Julian Joachim, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes. On the same day, future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil lost a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Bolivia. Javier misses out 2004 - Future red Javier Mascherano played as Argentina lost the Copa América Final. The game in Lima ended 2-2, but Brazil won the penalty shoot-out 4-2. Red farewells 1900 - James Kelso committed suicide back in his native Scotland, aged just 29. He only played one senior reds game, in a 4-0 Lancashire League defeat of Bury at Anfield in September 1892. 1938 – Inside-forward Willie Michael died. He joined the reds from Heart Of Midlothian in January 1895, scoring five times in 23 reds games before returning to Tynecastle in May 1897. A new case for Jimmy 1991 - Ex-reds midfield dynamo Jimmy Case joined Third Division Bournemouth from Southampton on a free transfer. He was a virtual ever-present in his one season with the Cherries, before joining Halifax Town on a free transfer in May 1992. Young future reds on target 2002 - Fernando Torres bagged a brace as Spain Under-19’s reached the Final of the European Championships in Norway, courtesy of their 3-2 defeat of Slovakia in Drammen. On the same day, future reds Head of Opposition Analysis Chris Davies played for Wales Under-19’s as they lost 4-1 to Scotland in a friendly. 2003 – Daniel Agger converted a penalty for Denmark Under-20’s as they lost a shoot-out 5-4 to the USA in the NI Milk Cup third place play-off in Northern Ireland, after the match had ended 1-1. Partridge claims bronze 1999 - Richie Partridge featured as the Republic of Ireland Under-18’s beat Greece 1-0 in Sweden to claim third place in the European Championship Finals. 1996 - Michael Owen played in the same tournament as England drew 1-1 with Italy in a group game France, with Gérard Houllier taking charge of France, with Christian Damiano as they beat Portugal 1-0. Happy birthdays 1946 - Midfielder Peter Cormack was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Nottingham Forest for a club record £110,000 in July 1972 and won League title and UEFA Cup winners’ medals in his first season. He scored 26 times in his 178 reds appearances before moving on to Bristol City in November 1976 for £50,000. 1922 - Left-winger Peter Kippax was born in Burnley. He left his hometown club to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. 1928 - Post-war red Joe Shepherd was born. He never played a senior game for us. His two brothers, centre-forward Arthur and full-back Bill, were also Liverpool players at around the same time. Hark! It’s Harkness 1989 - Steve Harkness signed from Carlisle United for £75,000. He went on to make 139 appearances for the reds, bagging three goals before being sold to SL Benfica by Gérard Houllier for ten times his purchase price in March 1999. Andriy off the mark 2007 - Andriy Voronin scored his first two reds goals as we beat SV Werder Bremen 3-2 in a friendly in Switzerland. Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun and Fernando Torres all played their first games for the club. John Arne Riise was also on target with a 25-yard strike. Heading off 2007 - Mark González was sold to Real Betis Balompié for £4.2m. The Chilean international winger was actually born in Durban, South Africa. He struck three times in 36 games after signing from Albacete Balompié for £1.5m in October 2005, although work permit problems delayed his arrival until the following summer. 2001 - Christian Ziege was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £4m, only a year after his acrimonious transfer from Middlesbrough. He had notched twice in 32 appearances whilst at Anfield, including coming off the bench in Cardiff for the first leg of the treble. Milly off the mark 2015 – James Milner struck his first goal for the club as we beat Brisbane Roar 2-1 at their Suncorp Stadium, with winger Ryan Kent making his first senior appearance. Double departure 1999 - Rob Jones signed for West Ham United on a non-contract basis. He had famously failed to score in his 243 reds appearances, but persistent back problems led to his departure from Anfield. He was unable to achieve full fitness while with the Hammers and subsequently retired from the game. On the very same day, second string keeper Tony Warner joined Millwall on a free transfer, after nearly a decade at Anfield without making a first team appearance. He joined Cardiff City from the Lions in July 2004 after 225 games for Millwall. 2017 - Keeper Ryan Fulton signed for Hamilton Academical, playing seven senior games in his first campaign with the Accies. Backroom changes 2007 - Ian Ayre was appointed as our new Commercial Director, although he would not actually take up the role for another month. He had previously been Chief Executive of Total Sports Asia, a brand solutions company advising international companies on rolling out Asian sports and entertainment campaigns, having also been Chief Executive and Chairman of Huddersfield Town. He said, “Being Liverpool born and bred, this is a dream job for me”. Ayre became the club’s CEO in May 2014, moving on from the reds when his contract expired three years later. 2002 - Hughie McAuley was confirmed as our new reserve team manager, leaving his position as the club’s Under-19’s boss. Academy Director Steve Heighway said, “Hughie is going down to Melwood to coach, but he will have a wide range of responsibilities and provide continuity between the Academy and Melwood. World Cup win 1994 - Thiago Alcântara's father Mazinho played for Brazil in the World Cup Final in California. The game ended goalless after extra time, with the Brazilians beating Italy 3-2 on penalties. Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel saved one of the shoot-out spot-kicks. 1991 – Taffarel also represented his country as Brazil lost 3-2 to Argentina in a Copa América final round game in Chile. 1988 – Taffarel again played for Brazil, this time helping them to a 2-0 win over the host nation in the Australia Bicentenary Gold Cup Final in Sydney. Deano cleared 1994 - Dean Saunders was cleared in the High Court of making a reckless challenge on Paul Elliott during a Liverpool game against Chelsea in September 1992. The tackle ended Elliott’s career, but Saunders was cleared of injuring him deliberately. A legend departs 2015 - Steven Gerrard was released by the reds after a stellar career. The departures of right-back Glen Johnson, keeper Brad Jones and young midfielders Jordan Lussey and Marc Pelosi were also announced that day. 2021 - Gini Wijnaldum agreed to sign for Paris Saint-Germain for free on 1st July. Edging towards the title 1947 - We moved to within touching distance of our fifth League title as our 2-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers took us one point clear of both Wolves and Manchester United, in our final game of the season. Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins bagged our goals before the break while Wolves legend Stan Cullis, who had guested for the reds during the war, played his final ever game for the club. Jimmy Dunn scored the first of his four goals past us in the second half. Curiously Manager George Kay was absent as he was on a five-day scouting mission in Ireland. However, we had to wait a further two weeks to know for sure if the title was ours, as fellow championship challengers Stoke City had one final game, which they lost at Sheffield United. Birth of a reds great 1919 - Bob Paisley was born in Hetton-le-Hole in County Durham. He made 277 reds appearances, netting twelve times and helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining the coaching staff in 1954. He took over as Manager twenty years later and remains the most successful English boss of all time, leading us to three European Cups, six League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. Happy birthdays 1986 – Spanish left-back José Enrique was born in Valencia. He signed from Newcastle United for £5.5m in August 2011, notching twice in 99 reds appearances before being released in May 2016. He moved on to Real Zaragoza four months later. 1983 – Pepijn Lijnders was born in Broekhuizen in the Netherlands. He joined the reds as First-team Development Coach in 2014, leaving the club in January 2018 to take over as N.E.C. boss. However, he was sacked just four months later, returning to Melwood in June 2018 as Assistant Manager until he left along with Jürgen Klopp in the summer of 2024. 1883 – Keeper Peter Platt was born in Rishton. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in May 1902, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. Four for Harold 1932 - Centre-forward Harold Barton scored all four reds goals as we beat Chesterfield 4-2 at their Recreation Ground in a Fourth Round FA Cup tie. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Chelsea in the Sixth Round that season. Beating the Blues 1937 - We won the Anfield derby 3-2 with Fred Howe, Phil Taylor and Jack Balmer on target, and Alex Stevenson bagging a brace for the Blues. Most recently 2022 – We won 3-1 at Crystal Palace with Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target before the break, with Fabinho converting a late spot kick. 2020 – We won 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, extending our lead at the top of the table to sixteen points with a game in hand. Fred Pagnam scored our goal, while David McLean struck one of his eight goals past us with Sam Kirkman bagging the last of his four. A crazy win 2016 – We won by the odd goal in nine at Norwich City, thanks to a stoppage-time Adam Lallana winner that led to a mass celebration on the touchline with boss Jürgen Klopp having his glasses broken. Roberto Firmino put us in front, but we found ourselves 3-1 down. We completed a turnaround to lead 4-3 thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, a second from Firmino and James Milner. We were still ahead at the ninety-minute mark but Sébastien Bassong bagged a late leveller before the final dénouement. Off the mark 1904 – Forward John Carlin struck the first of his eight reds goals as we drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion, with half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes also on target with his second and last strike for the club. Carra going free 2006 - Jamie Carragher was awarded the Freedom of Sefton, an honour that thrilled the Bootle-born defender, which he won for his local charity work and the good example he sets young people. He became only the second person to be handed such an accolade. Other births and deaths 2013 – Right-winger Jimmy Payne died. He notched 43 times in 243 appearances for the reds, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, before moving across Stanley Park in April 1956, where he was dogged by injury before retiring to become a newsagent. 1911 – Inside-right Jock Smith committed suicide two days after the death of one of his children. He signed from Sunderland in May 1892, bagging five goals in eleven outings, moving on to The Wednesday in August 1893. 1907 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He joined the reds from Leith Athletic in May 1897, netting three times in twelve reds games before he returned to his former club for free in August 1898. 1868 – Forward Fred Geary was born in Hyson Green, Nottingham. He signed from Everton for £60 in May 1895, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. Stéph’s debut 1993 - Future red Stéphane Henchoz made his full international debut as Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland drew 1-1 with Japan B in a Carlsberg Cup game in Hong Kong, going on to win 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out. Bad boys 2006 - Abel Xavier was sacked by Middlesbrough after being found guilty of breaching UEFA’s anti-doping regulations. Four against 2000 - Mark Viduka scored four goals as Leeds United won a 4-3 thriller at Elland Road, the first of his six strikes against us. Christian Ziege scored his first reds goal, with Sami Hyypiä and Vladimír Šmicer also on target, while Patrik Berger suffered a serious knee injury. This was the first time an opposing player had notched four times against the reds since Jimmy Greaves for Tottenham Hotspur in April 1963. For King Billy 2004 - A plaque in honour of Billy Liddell was unveiled at Anfield. Also in Europe 1970 - We moved into the Third Round of the Fairs Cup, holding Dinamo Bucureşti to a draw on their own patch to progress 4-1 on aggregate, with our equaliser coming from substitute Phil Boersma, the first of his thirty reds goals. 1981 - A thrilling night at Anfield ended in a 3-2 defeat of the previous season’s losing UEFA Cup Finalists AZ’67 Alkmaar, as we reached the Third Round of the European Cup 5-4 on aggregate. The Dutch champions equalised twice after a Terry McDermott penalty and an Ian Rush strike before Alan Hansen won it with five minutes to go. Alkmaar’s second equaliser came from a 25-yard shot from future Nottingham Forest star Johnny Metgod that bounced down from the crossbar and onto Phil Thompson’s foot for a bizarre own goal. Kees Kist scored in both legs for the Dutch side. 1997 - We beat Racing Club de Strasbourg 2-0 at Anfield thanks to a penalty from Robbie Fowler and a late goal from Karlheinz Riedle. This was our hundredth win in Europe, excluding those secured through penalty shoot-outs or coin tosses. However, this was not enough to overcome a three goal first-leg deficit as we went out of the UEFA Cup at the Second Round stage. A rare defeat 1989 - Coventry City won at Anfield for the first time, at the 23rd attempt, when Cyrille Regis struck the only goal of the game, the last of his four strikes past us. Elisha’s last 1933 - Elisha Scott won his 27th and last cap as a reds player as Northern Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in the British International Championships in Belfast. He left Anfield to sign for Hibernian in January 2011. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward Krisztián Németh re-signed for MTK Hungária, scoring in his only League outing before joining Dutch side RKC Waalwijk two months later. On the same day, future red Tiago Ilori played for Portugal Under-19’s as they trounced the Faroe Islands 9-1 in a friendly. 2022 - Pako Ayestarán was appointed Assistant Head Coach of Aston Villa, working under Unai Emery. 1903 - Right-back Alf West signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s for £500. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. Youngsters for England 2021 – Jayden Danns bagged a brace, his only goals for England Under-16’s, as they beat Belgium 3-2 in a friendly in France. 1964 - Future red David Wilson won his seventh and final cap for England Under-23’s as they beat Wales 3-2 in a friendly at the Racecourse Ground. 2023 – Future red Rio Ngumoha played for England Under-16’s in their 2-2 friendly draw with Switzerland in France, before winning a penalty shoot-out. Keepers on the move 2005 - Paul Harrison joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, having been released from Anfield at the end of the previous season. He never made their first team, soon moving on to Chester City. 2003 – Aussie custodian Brad Jones joined Blackpool on loan from Middlesbrough. Michael at the treble 1983 - Michael Robinson netted a hat-trick, his first League goals for the reds, as we won 3-1 at West Ham United, despite Craig Johnston being sent off just after the hour mark. Billy Bonds made his 700th West Ham appearance in this game, as we closed the gap on the second-placed Hammers to two points. New skipper 2003 - It was announced that Steven Gerrard had replaced Sami Hyypiä as club captain, prior to our game at home to Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana. Florent Sinama-Pongolle made his reds bow as we reached the Second Round of the UEFA Cup 4-1 on aggregate, in our 150th game in this competition. Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War! 1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th reds game, while left-half Samuel Hignett made his only senior appearance for the club. Fastest treble 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored the fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history, taking just six minutes and twelve seconds to net three times in our groups stage game at Rangers. Scott Arfield gave the home side the lead, but we romped home as 7-1 winners with Roberto Firmino netting either side of the break before Darwin Núñez scored. Salah then arrived from the bench to grab his treble, with Harvey Elliott completing the scoring. Europe’s best 1978 – The reds were named as European team of the year at a ceremony in Paris, having retained the European Cup at Wembley earlier that year. Reds come into the world 1867 - Right-half Rab Howell was born in Sheffield. He went on to become the only true Romany to play for England, playing 67 reds games without scoring after signing from Sheffield United for £200 in April 1898. He left for Preston North End in June 1901. 1897 - Forward Sam Bowyer was born in Northwich. He signed from Earlestown in March 1907, grabbing sixteen goals in 48 reds games before leaving for Bedminster in 1912. 1987 - Former reserves attacking midfielder Besian Idrizaj was born in Baden in Austria. He was actually a Kosovan-Albanian and was voted the best young player in the Austrian equivalent of the Championship shortly before moving to England. He signed from Linzer ASK for an initial £190,000 in August 2005 and made his first senior appearance in our friendly at Crewe Alexandra back in July 2006, netting a treble at Wrexham a year later, but failed to make the first-team squad, sadly dying aged just 22 in May 2010. Sammy the champion 1982 - Sammy Lee skippered England Under-21’s as they lost 3-2 to West Germany in Bremen in the second leg of the Final of the European Championships. Kenny in charge again 1991 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed Manager of Blackburn Rovers. He led them to their first League title in 81 years in 1995, before moving upstairs. 2014 – Ex-reds defender Markus Babbel was appointed Manager of Luzern, leading them to 36 wins in 79 League fixtures in Switzerland. Salif departs 2006 - Salif Diao joined Stoke City on loan. He turned out seventeen times for them before making the switch permanent in January 2007.
