One-nil down, two-one up 2001 - Michael Owen won the cup! A glorious day in our recent history saw us clinch the FA Cup in Cardiff, the second leg of the treble, despite going behind to a Freddie Ljungberg goal after surviving repeated Arsenal attacks, sometimes through dubious means! Two late, late Michael Owen goals won us the cup, and the Millennium Stadium was awash with overjoyed reds. This was the first time we had won an FA Cup Final while wearing an away kit. Clinching three in a row 1984 - We clinched our fifteenth League title by holding Notts County to a goalless draw at Meadow Lane. This was our third consecutive championship, and the second part of a glorious treble claimed by Joe Fagan in his first season in charge. Left-back Alan Kennedy was playing his 300th reds game. Inter trouble 1965 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the European Cup as we lost 3-0 at Internazionale, going out at the Semi-final stage 4-3 on aggregate. The match was highly controversial with Inter’s first goal coming direct from a contentiously-awarded indirect free-kick, and the second coming after the ball was kicked out of Tommy Lawrence’s hands. Ian St. John also had a goal mysteriously disallowed. Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran played his 379th and final reds game in this match. Finishing second 2019 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield to secure a club record 97 points, a total only bettered twice in top-flight history, including Manchester City who ended the day on 98. Sadio Mané struck twice to end the campaign on 22 goals, sharing the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Alisson Becker kept his 21st League clean sheet of the season to claim the Golden Glove with a total only bettered once in Premier League history. Danny at the treble 2013 – Daniel Sturridge bagged his only reds hat-trick as we won 3-1 at Fulham, with Jonjo Shelvey playing his 69th and last reds game. Dimitar Berbatov had put the home side in front with the last of his five goals past us. Managers rewarded 2011 - Kenny Dalglish was re-appointed Manager permanently, leading us to a League Cup triumph at Wembley and 36 wins in 74 games until being sacked a year later. First-team coach Steve Clarke signed a new three-year contract on the same day. 2014 - Brendan Rodgers was named as LMA Manager of the Year after leading the reds to a second-place finish in the League. Beaten in Manchester 1969 - We lost at reigning champions Manchester City, our only other first-class game on this day over the years. Francis Lee struck the only goal of the game, one of his six past us. 1923 – We lost the Lancashire Senior Cup Final 1-0 to City at Bolton Wanderers’ Burnden Park. The English silent knight 1971 - Chris Lawler scored on his full international debut as England thumped Malta 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Wembley. Clubmate Emlyn Hughes also played. 1992 – Future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron won his first cap for England Under-21’s as they drew a friendly 2-2 in Hungary. Captain Clem 1981 - Ray Clemence captained England for the only time, in their 1-0 friendly defeat by Brazil at Wembley. Terry McDermott and Phil Neal both also played. Happy birthdays 1996 – Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas was born in Thessaloniki. He signed from Olympiacos for an initial £11.75m in August 2020, playing 59 reds games before his 27th birthday, with his decisive spot-kick securing the FA Cup at Wembley in May 2022. 1900 - Defender Bert Shears was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He played sixteen reds games without notching after arriving from Aberdare Athletic in September 1924, moving to Tranmere Rovers in May 1930. Three for Davey 1978 - David Fairclough scored a hat-trick as we drew 5-5 with Bolton Wanderers in a testimonial for ex-red Peter Thompson at Burnden Park. Toffee Duncan Mackenzie added a brace while guesting for the reds. Taylor on target again 1945 - Future reds boss Phil Taylor scored in his third consecutive game, bagging a brace as we trounced Oldham Athletic 7-0 in a Wartime League match at Boundary Park. Bill Kinghorn, George Paterson, Jack Westby, Jack Pilling and Berry Nieuwenhuys also struck. Reg signs on 1959 - Forward Reginald Bore signed a professional contract. He only made one senior appearance for the reds, later that year aged just seventeen, going on to enjoy much greater success at Oldham Athletic, for whom he made over 200 League appearances in midfield. Departures 1911 – Keeper Augustus Beeby left for Manchester City. He joined the club in December 1908, but only made sixteen senior appearances. 1937 – Forward Jimmy Collins was sold to Cardiff City, for whom he bagged forty goals in 75 League outings. He had signed from Walsall in January 1936, failing to score in seven reds games. 2010 – Reserves custodian David Martin re-signed for MK Dons, having failed to make the first team at Anfield. 2016 - Sami Hyypiä was sacked as Manager of Zürich, having been in charge since the previous August, with the club heading towards relegation. 2022 – Midfielder Philippe Coutinho joined Aston Villa from Barcelona for €20m after a successful four-month loan spell. On the same day, former reds winger Mark Kennedy resigned as Assistant Manager of Birmingham City to take over as Lincoln City boss. He led them to 25 wins in 73 games before being sacked in October 2023. Internationals on target 1993 - Future red Sami Hyypiä netted his first goal for Finland Under-21’s as they beat Austria 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Pori. On the same day, Ronnie Rosenthal struck as Israel drew 2-2 with Bulgaria in a World Cup qualifier in Sofia. 2009 - András Simon scored for Hungary Under-19’s as they lost a friendly 3-2 to Austria in Telki, with Péter Gulácsi also in action. 2014 – Future red Dominic Solanke bagged a brace as England Under-17’s beat Turkey 4-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Malta, with fellow future red Joe Gomez also in action. 2019 – Ki-Jana Hoever netted as the Dutch Under-17’s beat Belgium 3-0 in their European Championships Quarter-final in the Republic of Ireland. Brucie replaced 2002 - Bruce Grobbelaar was replaced as coach of South African side Hellenic, after just five months in charge. Also in international action 1973 – John Toshack faced future red Kenny Dalglish as Scotland beat Wales 2-0 in the British International Championships in Wrexham. 2002 – Ex-red Brad Friedel played for the USA as they beat Uruguay 2-1 in a friendly in Washington DC. 2011 – Adam Morgan, Brad Smith and future red Emre Can all featured at the Semi-final stage of the Under-17’s European Championships Finals in Serbia. Germany beat Denmark 2-0, with England losing out 1-0 to the Netherlands. 2016 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat Denmark 3-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Azerbaijan. On the same day, Bernard Diomède managed France as they lost 1-0 to Sweden in the same tournament. 2017 – Future reds Ozan Kabak and Dominik Szoboszlai faced each other as Turkey Under-17’s beat Hungary 1-0 in their European Championships Quarter-final in Croatia.

Aldo’s record 1987 - John Aldridge scored in his tenth consecutive League game, including one from the previous season, netting from the spot as we beat Queens Park Rangers 4-0 at Anfield. Craig Johnston had a goal chalked off but also scored, while John Barnes bagged a brace. This goalscoring run remains a joint top-flight record, for any club, and took him to twelve goals already that season. Ex-red Ian Rush was watching in the crowd. Later that day, Kenny Dalglish, Peter Robinson and Chairman John Smith met with Ray Houghton and his wife at a Southport restaurant to agree to his £825,000 transfer from Oxford United, which was finalised two days later. A Euro thumping 2017 – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain bagged his first reds goal as we trounced Maribor 7-0 in Slovenia, our best ever away win in Europe and the joint record away victory in the UEFA Champions League. Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah scored twice each, with Philippe Coutinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold also scoring. Mo’s ton up 2020 – We drew 2-2 at Everton behind closed doors with Sadio Mané giving us an early lead before Michael Keane levelled. Mohamed Salah reached a century of reds goals before Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised. Richarlison was dismissed for the home side right at the death for a late tackle on Thiago Alcântara which ruled him out for more than two months. Jordan Henderson had a very late winner cruelly ruled out for offside by VAR, but the game was marred by Jordan Pickford’s wild challenge resulting in a serious injury to Virgil van Dijk Triple centurions 2009 – Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun and Javier Mascherano all reached a century of reds appearances as we lost 1-0 at Sunderland to the freak ‘beach ball’ goal, as Pepe Reina was wrong-footed by a fifth-minute Darren Bent strike that should have been ruled out, one of his five goals against us to date. Ex-red Bolo Zenden and future red Jordan Henderson both featured for the home side. 1896 – We lost a top-flight fixture at Sunderland’s Newcastle Road ground by the odd goal in seven, having gone in 3-0 down at the break. Full-back Archie Goldie struck his only reds goal before we then fell 4-1 behind, with Donald Gow scoring an own goal for the reds and George Allan also on target late on to make the score slightly more respectable. Jimmy Hannah and Andrew Hamilton struck twice apiece for the home side. 1990’s Euro trips 1995 - Mark Wright excelled as we held Brøndby IF to a goalless draw in Denmark, although we lost the Anfield return 1-0 to crash out of the UEFA Cup at the Second Round stage. 1996 - Robbie Fowler and John Barnes netted as we beat Sion 2-1 after falling behind to a Christophe Bonvin strike in Switzerland at the same stage of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. We went as far as the Semi-final that year, after winning the Anfield return 6-3. Onto the Heighway 1970 - Steve Heighway netted his first reds strike to complete a 2-0 top-flight victory over Burnley at Anfield after Ron Yeats had opened the scoring just before half time with his sixteenth and last goal for the club. A new boss 2015 - Jürgen Klopp took charge for the first time as we held Tottenham Hotspur to a goalless draw at White Hart Lane, with Divock Origi striking the crossbar. Joe Allen reached a century of reds games. Daniel’s ton up 2016 – Forward Daniel Sturridge played his hundredth reds game as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Manchester United. The Case for 1994 - A testimonial match for Jimmy Case was played, with the reds beating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 at the Goldstone Ground. Young forward Lee Jones scored his first reds goal, with Robbie Fowler netting the other. 1981 - We also faced the Seagulls on the south coast when Kenny Dalglish, Ray Kennedy and Terry McDermott struck in a 3-3 top-flight draw. Ex-red Jimmy Case was also amongst the scorers, with Steve Foster and Andy Ritchie also netting as Alan Kennedy played his hundredth League game for the reds. Derby disappointment 2010 - We tamely lost 2-0 at Goodison Park, with boss Roy Hodgson laughably claiming after the match that it had been our best performance of the season to date. Tim Cahill struck the last of his five derby goals with Mikel Arteta grabbing the other. 1998 - Our League trip across Stanley Park ended goalless, so taking the Blues’ unbeaten derby run to nine matches. Ivory Coast-born striker Ibrahima Bakayoko was making his debut for the home side. Red births 1876 – Scottish winger Tommy Robertson was born in Fauldhouse. He signed alongside inside-right Johnny Walker for a combined £175 from Heart Of Midlothian, netting 35 times in 141 games before returning to Tynecastle in May 1902, having helped us to claim our first League title in 1901. 1985 – Ex-reds reserves defender James Smith was born in Liverpool. He was last seen playing for Southport in the Conference Premier, having only played one senior reds game, in our Carling Cup tie at Reading in October 2006. A winning debut 1925 - Right-half David McMullan made his reds bow in our 2-1 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw struck our goals, with left-half Tom Bromilow playing his 200th League game. Tommy Johnson netted the first of his eight strikes against the reds. In and out 1919 – Inside-right Fred Pagnam was sold to Arsenal for £1,500. He had signed from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games, keeping up his remarkable strike-rate with the Gunners. 1923 – Inside-forward Harry Lewis left for Hull City after twelve goals in seventy outings and 57 strikes in 101 wartime games, having helped us to claim the League title in 1922. 1953 – Welsh forward Tony Rowley signed from Stourbridge. He bagged a treble on his debut, going on to net 38 times in 61 reds games. He moved to Third Division Tranmere Rovers in March 1958, continuing to score at a rate of one goal every other game. 1974 – Reserves winger Hughie McAuley moved on to Plymouth Argyle. He turned professional in January 1970, returning to work with the club’s Academy in June 1990, taking up several roles until leaving in the summer of 2009. Management no more 2007 - Sammy Lee and Frank McParland both left Bolton Wanderers by mutual consent. Sammy had been in charge for just fourteen matches, although he had only led them to three victories. 1994 - 1950’s wing-half Keith Burkinshaw was sacked as Manager of West Bromwich Albion. He had been in charge for sixteen months, as the Baggies struggled to stay in the First Division. Loaned out 2000 - Erik Meijer joined Preston North End on loan. He made nine appearances while at Deepdale, but failed to get on the scoresheet. 2002 – Right-back Glen Johnson joined Millwall on loan from West Ham United. He played eight times for the Lions before returning to establish himself in the first eleven at Upton Park. Disappointment in the Potteries 1903 - We were well beaten at Stoke, going down 5-2 in a top-flight match, with Jack Cox and George Fleming netting for the reds. Teddy Holdcroft bagged a brace for the Potters, with Tinker Whitehouse, Tom Holford also on target, and Arthur Capes bagging the last of his four goals past us. Inside-forward Fred Buck was sent off for kicking and punching future reds left-half Jim Bradley, for which he was suspended for six weeks. 1959 - We returned to the Victoria Ground for a Second Division encounter, with Jimmy Harrower on the scoresheet as we held Stoke City to a draw. Forward Reginald Blore made his only senior reds appearance in this game. Seeing off the Mancs 1942 - We beat Manchester United 2-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League game, with Willie Fagan and Cyril Done grabbing our goals. Bye bye Berry for now 1908 - Arthur Berry played the third and final game of his first spell as a reds player as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Woolwich Arsenal. Ronald Orr and Joe Hewitt were both on the scoresheet, with Tom Chorlton missing a penalty. Ex-red Charlie Satterthwaite was on target for the Gunners, with David Neave nabbing one of his four strikes past us. Kenny for his country King Kenny has played for Scotland three times on this day over the years. 1973 - He won his twelfth cap while still with Celtic as they won 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Czechoslovakia. 1979 - Dalglish captained the side as they were held 1-1 at Hampden Park by Austria in a European Championships qualifier. Graeme Souness and future red John Wark played behind him in that game. 1984 - He won his 95th cap as Scotland beat Iceland 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier. Steve Nicol won his second cap in that game, as ex-red Graeme Souness skippered the side. International reds on target 1990 - Gary McAllister, then still with Leeds United, scored his first Scotland goal in his fifth international game, as they beat Switzerland 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Hampden Park. Steve Nicol also featured in this game. On the same day, ex-red John Aldridge netted a treble, including a penalty, as the Republic of Ireland beat Turkey 5-0 at Lansdowne Road. Future red Istvan Kozma also featured in qualifying action that day. 2023 - Dominik Szoboszlai struck his first goal as a reds player, scoring from the spot as he captained his country in their 2-2 European Championships qualifying draw with Lithuania in Kaunas. Luis Díaz had a penalty saved as Colombia shared a goalless draw with Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier in Quito, while Darwin Núñez converted a spot-kick as Uruguay beat Brazil 2-0 in another qualifier in Montevideo. On the same day, Jayden Danns, Wataru Endō, Ibrahima Konaté, Lewis Koumas, Alexis Mac Allister, Calum Scanlon and ex-reds Jordan Henderson and Takumi Minamino were all also in international action, with Steve Clarke and Bernard Diomède taking charge of their countries. 2017 – Rhian Brewster converted in a penalty shoot-out as England Under-17’s beat Japan 5-3 following their goalless World Championship Finals Round of 16 game in India, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2015 – Herbie Kane played as England Under-17’s drew 1-1 with Guinea in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia as Cooper was again the boss. 2010 – Future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil each struck twice for Germany Under-17’s as they thumped Bosnia-Herzegovina 6-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Estonia. 2007 - Steve Finnan struck his second and final goal for the Republic of Ireland, and only one as a reds player, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cyprus in a Euro 2008 qualifier at Croke Park in Dublin, with future red Robbie Keane also featuring. 1979 - Ex-red Kevin Keegan was on the scoresheet in England’s 5-1 European Championships qualifying win in Northern Ireland, with Terry McDermott, Phil Neal and Phil Thompson all also playing. First and last caps 1979 - Ex-red John Toshack won his fortieth and final cap for Wales as they were thumped 5-1 by West Germany in a European Championships qualifier in Cologne. Half a century high 2007 - Andriy Voronin won his fiftieth cap for the Ukraine as they thumped the Faroe Islands 5-0 in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Kyiv. Meanwhile, future red Christian Poulsen also reached half a century as Denmark beat Latvia 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Copenhagen. Into the hall of fame 2007 - It was announced that Peter Beardsley and Graeme Souness were to be inducted into the Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. Beardsley won two League titles, the FA Cup, and two FA Charity Shields while at Anfield, as well as 59 England caps and a ‘new’ Second Division title with Fulham. Souness claimed five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields while with the reds, also winning 54 Scottish caps, a Second Division championship, Coppa Italia and Scottish League title as a player. 2022 - Sadio Mané was voted second in the Ballon d’Or, behind only Karim Benzema from Real Madrid. Mohamed Salah came fifth, Fabinho joint fourteenth, Virgil van Dijk sixteenth, Luis Díaz equal seventeenth, Trent Alexander-Arnold 22nd and future red Darwin Núñez joint 25th. An international debut 1956 - Alan A’Court won the first of his seven caps for England Under-23’s as they were held to a goalless draw by France at Ashton Gate. Joe departs 2006 - Centre-half Joe Maloney died. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in January 1951, but only made twelve senior appearances before moving to Shrewsbury Town in July 1954, for whom he played 237 League games. Other reds games 1964 – Ian St. John and Roger Hunt netted as West Ham United drew 2-2 at Anfield as Geoff Hurst scored two of his nine goals against the reds. 1953 – We lost 2-0 at Huddersfield Town. Jimmy Glazzard scored one of his five past us with Vic Metcalfe bagging one of his six. 1936 – Bolton Wanderers held us to a goalless draw in L4. 1931 – We won 2-1 at League leaders West Bromwich Albion thanks to goals from Gordon Hodgson and Gordon Gunson. 1914 – Tom Miller struck twice as we beat Bradford City 2-1 in L4, with Jackie Sheldon missing two penalties. Ernie in action twice Future reds defender Ernie Blenkinsop played for England in the British International Championships twice on this day in consecutive years. 1931 - He helped them to a 6-2 win in Northern Ireland. 1932 – He captained his country to a 1-0 victory over the same opposition in Blackpool, with reds keeper Elisha Scott in the away side’s goal that day and future reds forward Tosh Johnson winning his fifth and last cap for England. 2021 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty played for Republic of Ireland Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Scotland in Lucan.

Happy birthday Spud 1977 - Danny Murphy was born in Chester. He arrived from Crewe Alexandra for an overall £3m fee in July 1997. Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made a total of 249 first-team appearances, notching 44 times, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. Two-ton Rushie 1987 - Ian Rush bagged his 200th and 201st reds goals as we beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1, with ex-red Sammy Lee in the visitors’ side. 1967 – We lost 1-0 at Burnley with Les Latcham bagging a fortuitous late winner as Tommy Smith reached a century of League appearances for the reds. Skipper once again 2010 – Steven Gerrard captained the reds for the 300th time as we beat Lille OSC Métropole 3-0 in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie at Anfield, so overcoming a 1-0 first leg deficit. Gerrard opened the scoring from the spot after Lucas was brought down inside the first ten minutes. Fernando Torres bagged a second-half brace to secure victory. On the way to Wembley 1989 - We beat Third Division Brentford 4-0 at Anfield in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, thanks to a diving header from Steve McMahon, John Barnes strike and a late brace from Peter Beardsley as we headed towards Wembley yet again. 1899 - Unfortunately, we failed to reach our first ever FA Cup Final, holding Sheffield United to a 2-2 draw in the Semi-final at the City Ground, with George Allan and Hugh Morgan on the scoresheet. We eventually lost a second replay following a further draw. A disappointing League Cup first 1978 - We played our first ever League Cup Final, dominating the match but being held to a goalless draw by Nottingham Forest at Wembley, after extra time, before losing the replay four days later. Terry McDermott had a goal ruled out for offside with the referee also turning down a good penalty shout after Kenny Dalglish was felled in the area. Keeping milestones 2007 - Pepe Reina kept his fiftieth clean sheet as we held Aston Villa to a goalless draw at Villa Park, in what was his 93rd reds game. 1911 – Sam Hardy played his 200th reds game in our 2-1 top-flight defeat at Preston North End. Inside-left Ronald Orr struck our goal, with Ernest Bannister bagging a brace for the home side. Short-term long contracts 2009 - Rafael Benítez signed a new contract with the reds to tie him to Anfield until 2014. However, he left the club “by mutual consent” in June 2010 after 194 wins in his 350 games in charge. 2003 – Future reds right-back Glen Johnson signed a new four-year contract with West Ham United, although he moved to Chelsea for £6m just four months later. Other birthdays 1889 - Scottish left-back Bob Pursell was born in Campbeltown. He twice got us into trouble, firstly when we made an illegal approach to sign him from Queen’s Park in September 1911. He was then involved in the 1915 match-fixing scandal with Manchester United. He played 113 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, moving on to Port Vale in May 1920. 1942 - Forward Reginald Blore was born in Wrexham. He played as a striker for Swindon Town and Luton Town before moving into coaching, joining the reds in February 2006. Heading towards Wembley 2012 – We beat Stoke City 2-1 in the FA Cup Sixth Round at Anfield. Luis Suárez scored before ex-red Peter Crouch headed in a leveller, one of his four goals past us. Unhappy millennium 1922 - We lost 2-0 at home to Bolton Wanderers in a top-flight encounter that was our thousandth first-class fixture, with William Cunningham playing his third and final reds game as keeper Elisha Scott reached a century of reds outings. Joe Smith netted one of his twelve goals past us with David Jack nabbing one of his nine in a match that also counted for Section 2 of the Lancashire Senior Cup. Signing on 1895 – England international inside-forward Frank Becton signed from his hometown club Preston North End for £200, notching 42 times in 86 games before joining Sheffield United in October 1898. 1983 – Forward David West signed from Dorchester Town for £15,000. He made it to the first-team bench on two occasions without ever making a senior appearance. He moved on to Torquay United in September 1985. Getting rammed 2001 - Robbie Fowler played his 300th reds game in our 1-1 home League draw with Derby County, as Michael Owen equalised Deon Burton’s opener for the Rams. 2000 - We won 2-0 at Pride Park, with Owen and Titi Camara getting our goals. Sam’s treble 1905 - Sam Raybould scored a hat-trick in our 6-1 Second Division defeat of Gainsborough Trinity at Anfield. Jack Parkinson added a brace, with Arthur Goddard also on the scoresheet. European memories 1981 - We won 1-0 at CSKA Sofia in the second leg of our European Cup Third Round tie, with David Johnson on target after Sammy Lee had hit the post to send us through 6-1 on aggregate. Ray Clemence saved a penalty from Plamen Markov with ten minutes to go after a Jimmy Case foul. The night was one of mixed fortunes for our scorer, as Johnson pulled a hamstring, and had to be replaced by Steve Heighway before half time. 1992 - Less happily, we crashed out of the UEFA Cup at the Fourth Round stage, losing 2-1 to Genoa at Anfield to bow out 4-1 overall. Ian Rush bagged our goal with Mark Wright being taken off with a torn hamstring after just seventeen minutes. Uruguayan forward Carlos Aguileira struck both the visitors’ goals. Ronnie at the wrong end 1990 - Ronnie Whelan scored a late own goal at Old Trafford, although we still beat Manchester United 2-1 on the way to our most recent League title. John Barnes bagged both our goals, with one coming from the spot, his fiftieth reds goal. 1916 - We also took a trip down the East Lancs. Road with our Wartime League fixture ending goalless. Thumping the Geordies 1972 - We trounced Newcastle United 5-0 at Anfield with Chris Lawler, Kevin Keegan, John Toshack, Emlyn Hughes and Steve Heighway all netting. Tom’s last 1893 – We defeated South Shore 4-1 in a Lancashire League game at Anfield with John Miller on target twice. Malcolm McVean also scored with outside-right Tom Wyllie bagging his fifteenth and last goal for the club. To Elland back 1933 - Leeds United recorded their best ever win over the reds, thumping us 5-0 at Elland Road, to complete a League double. Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw put through his own net, with Jack Mahon bagging the first two of his four goals against the reds, Arthur Hydes scoring the first of his four past us and Harry Duggan bagging one of his five. 1936 - We beat the Yorkshire side 2-1 at Anfield, with Fred Howe and Phil Taylor on target. Arthur Riley saved a penalty from the visitors’ Jack Milburn, with George Brown netting the last of his nine strikes against us. Representative honours 1895 – Forward Gerald Dewhurst won his only England cap as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in the British International Championships at Queen’s Club in London. He was a Liverpool Ramblers player at the time and had played one reds game as a guest from Corinthians in March 1894. 1964 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt played for the Football League as they drew 2-2 with a Scottish League side at Roker Park. Other reds games 1961 – We were beaten 2-0 in a Second Division trip to Swansea Town. 1950 – Wolverhampton Wanderers won 2-0 at Anfield with Jim Hanc***s scoring in the first half. Roy Swinbourne struck the first of his five goals past us after the break. 1939 – We lost 2-0 at Arsenal with Alf Kirchen grabbing the last of his four goals against the reds and Ted Drake netting the final one of his six. 1914 – We beat Chelsea 3-0 in L4. Billy Banks bagged a brace with Tom Miller also on target, with all the goals coming in the second half. Loan moves 2000 - Former reserves forward Sean Friars joined Portadown on loan from Ipswich Town. He returned to Portman Road two months later, where he continued to fail to break through. 2005 - Former second-string defender Andrew Nicholas joined Chester City on loan from Swindon Town. He played five League Two games in his spell with the Blues. Also in international action 1901 – Maurice Parry played for Wales as they lost 6-0 to England in the British International Championships in Newcastle. 1907 – Sam Hardy’s England faced George Latham’s Wales in a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage. 1911 – Ex-red Billy Lacey featured as Ireland lost 2-0 to Scotland in Glasgow. 1992 – Lee Jones featured for Wales B as they lost 1-0 to a Canada Olympic XI in Wrexham. 2016 – Ben Woodburn played for Wales Under-17’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to Portugal in Croatia.
