In comes Spud 1997 - Danny Murphy arrived from Crewe Alexandra for an overall £3m fee. Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made 249 first-team appearances, scoring a useful 44 times, before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. He had helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Charity Shield in his time at the club. Double capture 2011 – Winger Stewart Downing signed from Aston Villa for £18.5m, while keeper Alexander Doni joined on a free transfer from Roma. Downing netted seven times in 91 outings before moving to West Ham United for £6m in August 2013, as well as scoring in the shoot-out as we claimed the Carling Cup at Wembley in 2012. Doni featured four times before joining Botafogo in his native Brazil in January 2013 having apparently suffered a heart attack during a routine medical in the summer of 2012. Final despair 2018 – Dejan Lovren played in the World Cup Final in Moscow, with France beating Croatia 4-2. 2007 - Javier Mascherano was on the losing side in the Copa América Final, as Argentina were beaten 3-0 by future red Alexander Doni’s Brazil in Venezuela. Meanwhile, Emiliano Insúa featured as Argentina Under-20’s beat Mexico 1-0 in the Quarter-final of the World Championships in Ottawa. Off goes Igor 2005 - Igor Bišcan signed for Panathinaikos after 118 reds games. The big Croat netted three times as he helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001, the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role on the road to Istanbul. He had arrived from Dinamo Zagreb for £5.5m in December 2000. 1969 – Keeper John Ogston moved on to Doncaster Rovers, after a successful loan spell. He signed from his hometown club Aberdeen for £10,000 in September 1965 having played over 200 games for the Dons, but only appeared once for the reds. Other arrivals 1989 – Swedish centre-half Glenn Hysén signed from Fiorentina for £600,000. He went on to make 93 appearances, notching three times and helping us to our most recent title win in 1990, as well as the FA Charity Shield on his debut. He returned to his hometown to sign for GAIS in May 1992. 2014 - Serbian winger Lazar Marković signed from SL Benfica for £19.8m. He struck three times in 34 games before spending much of his time out on loan, moving on to Fulham for free in February 2019. Bellers off the mark 2006 - Paul Anderson and Craig Bellamy both scored in their first reds games as we won a friendly 2-0 at Wrexham. Also making their first senior appearances that day were Godwin Antwi, Danny Guthrie, Adam Hammill, Jack Hobbs, Besian Idrizaj, David Martin, Danny O'Donnell, Gabriel Paletta, Lee Peltier, Miki Roqué, James Smith and Robbie Threlfall. Keeping bows 2022 – Custodians Harvey Davies and Fabian Mrozek both played their first reds games as we beat Crystal Palace 2-0 to secure the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022, thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah. More reds firsts 2009 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi, right-back Glen Johnson and centre-backs Daniel Ayala and Mikel San José all made their reds bows as we were held to a goalless draw in our friendly with St. Gallen 1879 in their AFG Arena in Switzerland. Beaten again 2020 – Arsenal came from behind to win 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium behind closed doors, as we fell to only our third League defeat of the season. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, but Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson both capitalised on reds errors to give the Gunners a half-time lead, which they held on to despite a second-half siege by the visitors. Bonne anniversaire 1981 - French midfielder Alou Diarra was born in Villepinte. After his free transfer from Bayern München in July 2002, he spent three seasons on loan in France, first at Le Havre AC, and then at Bastia and Racing Club de Lens, who he signed permanently for in June 2005. His only appearance in a red shirt came in a friendly win in Le Havre, when he enjoyed the rare distinction of returning to the pitch after having been substituted, as a replacement for Vegard Heggem. Suso the champion 2012 – Suso featured as Spain Under-19’s beat Greece 1-0 in the European Championships Final in Estonia. 2016 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-19’s as they beat the Netherlands 2-1 in a group stage game in Germany, with Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter also in action. This was his second and last strike at this level. Stevie signs on again 2013 – Steven Gerrard signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2015. He struck 186 times in 710 reds games, moving on to LA Galaxy in July 2015, before returning to the reds on the Academy staff. Redders in charge 1999 - It was confirmed that Jamie Redknapp would take over from the departed Paul Ince as reds captain. Robbie Fowler was appointed as his deputy. Unfortunately, much of his time as skipper was blighted by injury. Another birth and death 1920 - Keeper Ray Minshull was born in Bolton. He spent most of his five years at Anfield as deputy to Cyril Sidlow, making just 31 first-team appearances after joining the reds in September 1946. He left for Southport in June 1951, playing more than 200 times for them, and later became Player/Manager at Wigan Athletic. 1953 – Forward Dave Wright died. He bagged 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games after signing from Sunderland in March 1930. He remained at Anfield until July 1934, when he joined Hull City for £1,000. On the move 2003 – Future reds right-back Glen Johnson joined Chelsea from West Ham United for £6m, becoming the first signing of the Roman Abramovich era. He bagged four goals in 71 outings before joining Portsmouth in August 2006, initially on loan. On the same day, ex-reds reserves defender Alex Watson left basement side Exeter City for nearby Southern League side Taunton Town after one goal in 51 outings since signing on free transfer from Torquay United two years earlier. 1997 - Ex-red Ray Houghton signed for Reading from Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He struck just once in 56 appearances in his two seasons with the Royals before moving on to Stevenage Borough. 2016 – Ex-reds right-back Antonio Barragán joined Middlesbrough from Valencia, playing 27 times as they were relegated in his only campaign on Teesside, moving on to Real Betis Balompié in July 2017. 1993 - Ex-reserves striker John Durnin joined Portsmouth from Oxford United for £200,000, four years after moving to the Manor Ground from Anfield. He bagged just 33 goals in his 207 appearances for Pompey before moving on to Carlisle United on a free transfer. 2006 - Former reserves defender Gareth Roberts signed for Doncaster Rovers from Tranmere Rovers. He netted eight times in 165 games for his new club helping them to reach and remain in the Championship, before moving on to Derby County in July 2010. 2019 – Left-back Joe Maguire signed for Accrington Stanley, playing seventeen times before being released in May 2021. Also in international action 1991 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil in their 3-1 defeat of Ecuador in a Copa América group game in Chile. 2001 – Future red Kolo Touré played as the Ivory Coast drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 in Congo. 2004 – Arnaud Bühler appeared for Switzerland Under-19’s in their 2-0 defeat of Belgium in a European Championship Finals group game in Aarau. 2011 – Future red Mohamed Salah represented Egypt Under-20’s as they won a friendly 1-0 in Costa Rica.

Brian’s bow 1969 - University graduate Brian Hall made his reds bow in a goalless top-flight draw at Stoke City as a substitute for Roger Hunt. He went on to net 21 times in 224 reds appearances, was also the club’s Public Relations Manager from 1991 until retiring in 2012. 1960 - We also faced the Potters, with Billy Liddell striking a brace, including a penalty, as we beat them 3-0 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Bobby Murdoch netted the other. Debuting between the sticks 2012 – Brazilian custodian Alexander Doni played the first of his four reds games as Aston Villa held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Chris Herd scored for the Villains after ten minutes, with Luis Suárez nabbing a late leveller after we had hit the woodwork four times. On the same day, Jerome Sinclair featured for England Under-16’s who lost a penalty shoot-out to Russia after their friendly ended 2-2. 1967 - Keeper John Ogston played his only reds game in our 3-1 home League win over Newcastle United, with Roger Hunt bagging a brace to add to a goal from Ian Callaghan. This game launched Emlyn Hughes’ nickname of Crazy Horse after he rugby tackled United forward Albert Bennett in only his fifth reds match. Heading towards Basel 2016 – We held Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund to a 1-1 draw in their Signal Iduna Park in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Quarter-final. Divock Origi handed us a half-time lead, but Mats Hummels headed in soon after the break. Al off the mark 2007 - Our first ever game at Reading ended in a 2-1 win. Full-back Álvaro Arbeloa raced most of the length of the pitch to notch his first reds goal as we reached 200 League points under Rafael Benítez. Dirk Kuyt headed a late winner after Brynjar Gunnarsson had drawn the home side level. Bashing the Hammers 1984 - We trounced West Ham United 6-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush and Graeme Souness both netted twice, with Kenny Dalglish bagging his 150th reds goal and Ronnie Whelan also on target as we went 4-0 up inside half an hour. Cottaged by Elton’s cousin 1956 - Roy Dwight scored a hat-trick for Fulham in their 3-1 Second Division win over us at Craven Cottage, the first of his four goals past us. Roy’s cousin Reg later went on to great fame and fortune, under the name of Elton John. Billy Liddell netted our consolation, while winger Joe Dickson played his sixth and final reds game and keeper Dave Underwood appeared for the fiftieth and last time. On a roll 1979 - We secured the third of five straight League wins, all without conceding, as we beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield. Jimmy Case, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott all struck in the second half to wipe out the bad memories of losing an FA Cup Semi-final replay to Manchester United three days earlier. This was Phil Thompson’s first game as reds skipper. 1951 - We also beat the Gunners in a top-flight meeting, with Albert Stubbins and Jimmy Payne scoring in a 2-1 win at Highbury, with Cliff Holton nabbing the first of his four goals against the reds as Payne reached a century of League outings for the reds in what was our 2,000th official game. Derby disappointment 2018 – We were held to a goalless draw by Everton in a drab Goodison encounter. 1917 - We were beaten 4-0 at Goodison Park in a Wartime League match. International debutants 1900 - Alex Raisbeck won the first of his eight Scotland caps as they thumped England 4-1 at Celtic Park in the British International Championships. 1965 - Tommy Smith made his debut for England Under-23’s in their goalless encounter with Czechoslovakia at Elland Road. 1906 - Billy Dunlop won his only Scottish cap as they won 2-1 in the same fixture at Hampden Park. Clubmate Raisbeck was his skipper that day, while ex-reds inside-right George Livingstone also debuted in this game, winning his only cap as a Manchester City player. Red endings 1947 - Wing-half Tom Bush played his 69th and final reds game, over thirteen years after his debut. We beat Preston North End 3-0 as we closed in on our fifth League title, with Albert Stubbins grabbing two and Jack Balmer also on target. Bush later joined the reds’ coaching staff. Keeper Ray Minshull saved a penalty taken by the visitors’ Bill Shankly. 1955 – Winger Harold Uren died. He joined the reds as an amateur in April 1906, turning out 45 times and notching twice before joining Everton in February 1912 for £300 with forward Billy Lacey and centre-forward Tommy Gracie heading in the opposite direction. A win at Old Trafford 1982 - A goal from Craig Johnston was enough to beat Manchester United. Bruce Grobbelaar saved an early Frank Stapleton penalty, being helped by seeing a picture of him converting a previous spot-kick in the programme before the match! Win, lose and draw against the Blues We have played Birmingham City three times in the top-flight on this day over the years, with varying degrees of success. 1939 - Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer scored a brace apiece as we thumped City 4-0 at Anfield. 1923 – We were held to a goalless draw, also at home. 1973 - A Tommy Smith goal was not enough as we went down 2-1 at St. Andrews, with Emlyn Hughes sent off in the final minute, although he later successfully appealed the dismissal. Future Blues forward Bob Latchford netted one of his five goals against us, with Bob Hatton bagging the first of his four past us while left-back Alec Lindsay reached a century of League games for the reds. Mixed fortunes against the Clarets We have faced Burnley three times on this day in history, winning only once and losing twice. 1900 - We lost 1-0 at Anfield, with ex-reds forward Abe Hartley on target. Sam Raybould had a penalty saved for the reds. 1950 - We won another First Division meeting 2-0 at Turf Moor thanks to goals from Jimmy Payne and Billy Liddell. 1919 - Our Wartime League match ended in a 5-3 away defeat, with Rob Matthews netting twice and Harold Wadsworth also on target. Also recently 2013 – West Ham United held us to a goalless League draw at Anfield, with a Daniel Sturridge strike wrongly ruled out for offside. Oussama Assaidi played his twelfth and last reds game. Up against the Terriers 1928 - We won a top-flight match 4-2 at Huddersfield Town, with Jimmy Walsh bagging his 27th and final reds goal. Tommy Reid, Gordon Hodgson and Dick Edmed grabbing our other goals, with Alex Jackson nabbing the first two of his four goals against us. 1962 - We were held to a 1-1 draw in our other meeting on this day in history on our way to the Second Division title. Roger Hunt netted for the reds at Anfield that day. Beating City We have twice defeated Manchester City on this day in history. 1954 - Brian Jackson struck twice as we won a top-flight encounter 2-0 at Maine Road. 1945 - Don Welsh bagged a brace with Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet as we won a Wartime League match at Anfield 3-0 that also counted for the Wartime League Cup. Milestone goals 1958 - Forward Bobby Murdoch bagged his seventh and final reds goal as we beat Stoke City 3-0 at Anfield in a Second Division encounter. He only played five more times before joining Barrow in September 1959. Billy Liddell scored the other goals, one of them from the spot. 1934 – We drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion. We fell two goals behind at the break to a Jock Carter strike and then the first of Teddy Sandford’s five goals against the reds. Vic Wright scored his first goal with Gordon Hodgson also netting in the second half. Management moves 2009 – Assistant Secretary Ian Silvester was appointed Club Secretary, following the death of Bryce Morrison the previous month. On the same day, ex-reserves midfielder David Mannix was charged with breaching the FA’s betting rules while playing for Chester City. He was later banned for ten months and fined £4,000. 2017 – Ex-reds boss Brendan Rodgers signed a new four-year contract with Celtic, having already led them to the League Cup and title since taking charge in May 2016. He left for Leicester City in February 2019. Harry on the move 2013 – Left-winger Harry Kewell signed for Al-Gharafa, in the Qatar Stars League. He struck once in three games before returning to Australia to sign for Melbourne Heart. In trouble 2015 - Ex-reds left-back Andrea Dossena was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting from Harrods, although no further action was taken. Also in international action 1894 – Future red Edgar Chadwick featured as England drew 2-2 with Scotland in the British International Championships at Celtic Park. 1976 – Future red Kenny Dalglish played for Scotland in their 1-0 friendly defeat of Switzerland at Hampden Park. 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye played for Norway Under-19’s as they lost a tournament game 5-1 to Hungary in Poland. 2004 – Jordan Holmes played for England Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to the Ivory Coast in the Montaigu Tournament. 2007 – Future red Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-16’s as they beat Castelo Branco Under-18’s in Portugal.

Club record signing 2018 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk signed from Southampton for a club record £75m. He struck 23 times in 270 reds games across his first seven seasons, helping us to keep 108 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and FA Community Shield. On the same day, Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan headed in his second and last goal for the club to secure a last-minute 2-1 victory at Burnley. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after an hour before Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson equalised late on. 2020 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. 2024 – Minamino played as Japan thrashed Thailand 5-0 in a friendly in Tokyo. RIP Gary 2012 - Gary Ablett died, aged just 46. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in November 1983, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. 1992 - Ablett played his 147th and final reds game as goals from Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders resulted in a 2-1 League defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, after Brian Deane had struck one of his eight goals against the reds. 1977 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson died. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds after signing from Aberdeen for £1,750 in May 1925, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, also writing a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 1917 – Scottish ex-reds keeper Don Sloan died in First World War action. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. Rushie’s hat-trick 1983 - Ian Rush bagged a treble as we beat Notts County 5-1 at Anfield, with his second being his fiftieth reds strike. Kenny Dalglish netted a brace as Phil Neal missed a penalty. John Fashanu struck the first of his six goals past us. 1994 - Rushie was on target as we won 2-1 at Ipswich Town, completing his record of scoring for us in each of the six New Year’s Day matches in which he played. Neil Ruddock nabbed the other goal to complete our first away League win since August. Most recently 2024 - Mohamed Salah scored his 150th League goal for the reds after a goalless first half against Newcastle United at Anfield, having had a first-half spot-kick saved. Alexander Isak levelled, but Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo netted before Sven Botman headed a goal back. However, Salah converted another penalty to complete a 4-2 victory late on to maintain our lead at the top of the table. Happy birthdays 1993 - Right-back Jon Flanagan was born in Liverpool. He struck once in 51 senior reds games since making his debut in a 3-0 home victory over Manchester City in April 2011. He joined Rangers in June 2018 after being released by the reds earlier that month. 1955 – Chief Executive Officer Peter Moore was born in Liverpool, taking on the role in June 2017, moving on in August 2020. 1984 – Head of Nutrition Mona Nemmer was born. She joined from Bayern München in July 2016, having worked there for three years after a four-year spell with Germany Under-21’s. 2001 – Left-back Yasser Larouci was born in El Oued in Algeria. He arrived from Le Havre in July 2017 as a winger, playing two senior reds games before joining Troyes in July 2021. On the same day, midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner was born in Harlow. He debuted in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020, so far making just two senior appearances. More red trebles galore 1909 - Joe Hewitt bagged a treble against his former club as we won 4-1 at Sunderland with Arthur Goddard also scoring. Billy Hogg struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Sam Hardy also saving one of his spot-kicks. We have also twice beaten the Wearsiders 2-0 on New Year’s Day. 1949 - Billy Liddell converted from the spot at Roker Park to add to a Fred Hall own goal as right-half Phil Taylor made his 200th appearance. 1977 - Ray Kennedy and Phil Thompson both headed in goals at Anfield as Emlyn Hughes played his 400th League game for the reds. On the same day, Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat by Romania in Israel. 1910 - Jack Parkinson scored three, including a penalty, as we thumped Woolwich Arsenal 5-1 at Anfield, with Sam Bowyer adding a brace. David Neave netted the last of his four goals past us. 1894 - We also beat the Gunners at home in our first ever New Year’s Day fixture, with Jim McBride scoring hist first reds goal and Malcolm McVean also netting in our 2-0 win. 1940 - Berry Nieuwenhuys scored a hat-trick as we thumped Crewe Alexandra 7-3 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Debuting between the sticks 1913 - Elisha Scott became our youngest ever goalkeeper at just eighteen years 131 days, keeping a clean sheet as we emerged from Newcastle United with honours even. 1896 - Harry Storer made his reds bow as we beat Manchester City 3-1 at Anfield. Jimmy Ross bagged a brace, with Malcolm McVean also on target. Luis up to a score scores 2014 - Luis Suárez became the quickest player ever to reach twenty Premier League goals in a season, taking just fifteen games to do so as he converted a second-half free-kick. We beat Hull City 2-0 at Anfield with Daniel Agger heading in from a corner before the break. Other debuts 1927 - Right-back Bob Done and left-winger George Pither both debuted as we lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers, with Dick Edmed nabbing our consolation and Fred Baron playing his twentieth and final reds game. John Smith netted two of his seven goals against the reds. 1920 - Right-half Jock McNab made his reds bow as Manchester United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. We have faced the Mancs on two further occasions on New Year’s Day 1966 – We won 2-1 at Anfield with Tommy Smith and Gordon Milne netting, after Denis Law had given the visitors an early lead with one of his six strikes past us. 1989 - John Barnes struck our consolation as we lost 3-1 at Old Trafford. Mark Hughes bagged one of his nine strikes past us, with Brian McClair and Russell Beardsmore also on target. Twice against the Foxes 2015 – Steven Gerrard converted two first-half penalties, with the first wrongly awarded and the second being the reds’ hundredth successful conversion in the Premier League, as we became the first club to reach this milestone. However, David Nugent and Jeff Schlupp both struck after the break as the game ended 2-2 with Leicester City at Anfield. 1974 – We were held to a 1-1 home draw by the Foxes. Peter Cormack struck with Keith Weller nabbing one of his six goals past us, while Kevin Keegan reached a century of League games for the reds. Up against the Trotters 2011 – We secured a last-minute 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers in front of 35,400, the lowest League attendance at Anfield since Portsmouth visited on a Tuesday evening in December 2004. Kevin Davies headed the visitors in front with the last of his four goals against us, but Fernando Torres equalised early in the second half, with Joe Cole grabbing a dramatic late winner. 2007 - We won 3-0 at Anfield, thanks to a fantastic scissor-kick volley from Peter Crouch and strikes from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt, with all the goals coming in the second half. Dirk’s goal was our 900th in the Premier League. We have faced Bolton on three more occasions on this day in history. 1897 – We won 4-1 at Burnden Park with George Allan bagging a brace and John McCartney and Fred Geary also on target. 1907 - We lost 3-0 at Burnden Park. 2002 - We were held to a draw at Anfield with scouser Kevin Nolan cancelling out Steven Gerrard’s opener, which was our 150th goal in League encounters with Bolton. Up against the Blues We have entertained Chelsea three times on this day in history. 2005 - They completed their second League double over the reds, and first since 1919, when another deflected Joe Cole goal handed them victory at Anfield. 1924 - Danny Shone, Jimmy Walsh and Joe Keetley struck as we won 3-1. This was Keetley’s second and final reds goal. 1938 - John Shafto and Willie Fagan netted as we drew 2-2. Harry Burgess struck one of his nine goals against the reds, with Wilf Chitty also scoring. 1997 - We also visited Stamford Bridge, with Roberto Di Matteo grabbing the only goal of the game. In white 1906 - We beat Stoke 3-1 at Anfield, having to start the match with just ten men as left-back Billy Dunlop arrived late. The team played in white as the visitors had turned up in red jerseys. Not a ‘sir’ just yet 2000 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was finally awarded an MBE for his services in the 1966 World Cup, one of the final five World Cup winners to receive this honour. 1983 - Ex-reds centre-forward John Toshack received the same honour. 1975 – Reds legend Ian Callaghan was also awarded an MBE. Tommy Lang struck the last of his four goals past us, with Jimmy Boyd and Ron Williams also scoring for the home side. 2003 - A Laurent Robert free-kick deflected off Milan Baroš past Chris Kirkland as the Geordies won 1-0 on a sodden pitch. Salif Diao was sent off shortly after an hour for a wild challenge, while Grégory Vignal made his twentieth and final reds appearance as a late substitute. A rare defeat 1972 - Leeds United beat us 2-0, one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered during the whole of the 1970’s. Allan Clarke and Mick Jones each bagged one of their seven strikes past us. Other birthdays 1955 - Assistant Chief Scout Mike McGlynn was born in Liverpool. He was a senior coach with the FA for 20 years before becoming northern scout for West Ham United. He was initially in a part-time role for the reds before joining full time in 2007. 1881 – Welsh international half-back George Latham was born in Newtown. He joined the reds as an amateur in December 1902, signing on professionally the following year. He played nineteen reds games without scoring before joining Southport Central in 1909. Mølby foiled 1986 - Ian Rush ended a barren spell of eight games without a goal to draw us level at Sheffield Wednesday, before Martin Hodge saved a Jan Mølby spot-kick. Paul Walsh scored with his first touch from off the bench, but we were eventually held 2-2. Beating the Blues We have twice won wartime derby matches on this day in history. 1918 - Forward Thomas Bennett scored in his third consecutive game as we won 4-1 at Anfield, with Harry Lewis netting a brace and Jack Waine also on target. 1919 - We won 2-1 at Goodison Park thanks to goals from Harry Lewis and Arthur Metcalf. In and out 1949 – Half-back Jack Heydon signed on a free transfer from Everton, playing 67 times before moving to Millwall in May 1953. 2006 - John Welsh signed for Hull City in a swap deal for winger Paul Anderson. Welsh had played ten senior games for the reds, while Anderson made it onto the first-team bench just twice, both in Champions League matches. He signed for League One Nottingham Forest in June 2009, having spent the previous campaign on loan with them. 2011 – Reserves keeper Charles Itandje officially signed for Greek Super League side P.A.E. A.P.S. Atromitos Athens after dramatically falling out of favour at Anfield. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward Jon Newby was sacked as Manager of Colwyn Bay, having been in charge since November 2011. 2014 - Djibril Cissé signed for Bastia, scoring twice in eleven outings during the rest of his first campaign in Corsica. 2015 – Forward Jack Dunn, centre-half Lloyd Jones and midfielder Kevin Stewart all joined Cheltenham Town on loan, making a total of fifteen appearances between them. Red farewells 2008 - Club Secretary Sheila Walsh died of cancer. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, “Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering.” 2023 – Scottish forward Frank McGarvey died from cancer. He arrived from Celtic for £300,000 in May 1979 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. However, he never broke into the first team at Anfield, moving back to Celtic for £270,000 in March 1980, becoming Scotland’s most expensive footballer. 1901 – Romany right-half Rab Howell played his 67th and last reds game in our 3-1 home victory over Stoke. Jack Cox, Andy McGuigan and right-back Tom Robertson all netted, with Robertson also missing a penalty as winger Tommy Robertson reached a century of reds games. 1912 – We beat Bradford City 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a goal from Harold Uren, his second and last for the club. 1914 – The Bantams won 1-0 in L4 thanks to one of Dickie Bond’s four goals against the reds. 1898 - Right-half John McCartney struck his seventh and final goal for the club as West Bromwich Albion held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with centre-half Joe McQue reaching a century of League games for the reds as inside-forward Willie Walker appeared for the twelfth and last time. 1903 – The Baggies won 2-0 in L4 with George Dorsett netting the first of his five goals past us, and Billy Lee also scoring. 1895 – We beat Albion 4-0 at home, with all the goals coming in the second half. Forest four times 1996 – We beat Nottingham Forest 4-2 in a Premiership encounter at Anfield with Steve Stone and Ian Woan giving the visitors an early two-goal lead. A Robbie Fowler headed brace drew us level before half-time, with Stan Collymore putting us in front before Colin Cooper put through his own net. 1990 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at the City Ground, despite Ian Rush netting twice to hand us a two-goal half-time lead. Steve Hodge nodded in one of his six goals against us after the break, before future red Nigel Clough converted a penalty. Steve McMahon played his 200th game for the reds. 1987 – We drew 1-1 at Forest with youngster Phil Starbuck opening the scoring. Luther Blissett scored a first-half penalty, but Ian Rush headed in a late leveller. 1955 – We beat Derby County 2-0 in a home Second Division encounter, with Brian Jackson and Billy Liddell scoring. 1948 – Charlton Athletic won 3-2 at Anfield. Ray Minshull put through his own net before Charlie Vaughan handed the Addicks a two-goal half-time lead with the first of his four strikes against us. Bill Robinson extended their lead further, before Albert Stubbins reduced the arrears with a late brace. 1935 – We lost 2-0 at Middlesbrough, with Tim Coleman netting two of his nine goals past us. 1926 – Aston Villa lost 3-1 at Anfield as Dick Forshaw netted twice with Cyril Oxley also scoring before the break. Len Capewell then scored a consolation with one of his of his six goals against us. 1921 – We won 2-0 at Villa Park thanks to first-half goals from Dick Johnson and Harry Chambers. Uncle Joe’s debut 1946 - Joe Fagan made his debut for Manchester City in a 4-0 defeat of Fulham at Maine Road. In comes Razor 1987 - Ray Houghton signed from Oxford United for £825,000. He went on to strike 38 times in 202 reds games, helping us to two League titles, two FA Cups and the FA Charity Shield in his five years at Anfield. He was sold to Aston Villa for £900,000 in July 1992, as Graeme Souness tried to reduce the number of non-Englishmen in the squad, to comply with UEFA regulations for European competition. More ins and out 1894 - Centre-forward Hugh Henderson joined the reds from Third Lanark. He only made two appearances for the reds, both convincing defeats. 1962 – Scottish left-half Willie Stevenson signed from Rangers for £20,000. He missed just nine League games in his first four seasons, making a total of 241 appearances and netting eighteen times. He helped us to two League titles and our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 before moving on to Stoke City in December 1967. 1946 – Scottish left-winger George Paterson was sold to Swindon Town for their record fee, having struck once in three outings since arriving from the Hall Russell’s works team in May 1937. European Cup adventures We have lost just one of our five European games on this day in history, progressing to the next stage on each occasion. 1966 – We beat Romanians Petrolul Ploieşti 2-0 in a Preliminary Round replay in Brussels, when Ian St. John and Peter Thompson netted to take us through. 2004 - We were held to a goalless draw at home by Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña in the group stages of our glorious Champions League campaign. 2005 - Djibril Cissé grabbed the only goal of the game as we won at Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht in another group game. 1977 - Jimmy Case netted twice with Alan Hansen scoring his first reds goal as we started the defence of our crown by thumping Dynamo Dresden 5-1 at Anfield. Phil Neal converted a penalty, with Ray Kennedy also on target. 1982 - We had two goals disallowed for offside as we lost 1-0 at HJK Helsinki in the first leg of our Second Round tie, although we went on to win the return 5-0. 1983 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Athletic Bilbao at the same stage, although we won in Spain. On target again 2021 – Mohamed Salah scored in a club record ninth consecutive game, netting twice, including once from the spot, to become our top ever goalscorer in the European Cup. Roberto Firmino played his 300th game for the club as we won our UEFA Champions League group encounter 3-2 at Club Atlético de Madrid, with Antoine Griezmann sent off for the home side, having already bagged a brace, with Naby Keïta also on target. 2014 – We scored in a club record eighteenth consecutive top-flight away game, eventually winning a topsy-turvy game 3-2 at Queens Park Rangers, despite the score being just 1-0 with three minutes of normal time remaining. We went ahead after Richard Dunne put through his own net before Leroy Fer twice struck the crossbar for the home side. Eduardo Vargas equalised before Philippe Coutinho put us back in front on ninety minutes. Vargas’s header was deflected in off Steven Gerrard in stoppage time, but future red Steven Caulker then diverted Raheem Sterling’s cross into his own net to hand us all three points. 1974 – We won 1-0 at Loftus Road with Brian Hall on the scoresheet early on as full-back Chris Lawler played his 400th League game for the reds. Stevie’s century 2013 - Steven Gerrard scored his hundredth League goal as we drew 2-2 at Newcastle United, with Luis Suárez reaching a century of reds games. Yohan Cabaye opened the scoring for the home side from long range, with Gerrard equalising from the spot as Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was sent off for a foul on Suárez. Paul Dummett volleyed in after the break, with Daniel Sturridge also on target. Most recently 2022 - Darwin Núñez headed in his first Anfield goal in the first half, which was enough to secure victory over West Ham United at Anfield, with Alisson Becker later saving a Jarrod Bowen spot-kick. Jack born 1928 - Centre-half Jack Heydon was born in Birkenhead. He has so far made three senior appearances in cup competitions, being rewarded with a new contract in July 2020. Half a century high 1896 - We left Bramall Lane with a 1-1 draw after our fiftieth away League game. Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw notched our goal. Done a treble 1946 - Cyril Done scored a hat-trick in our 4-1 victory in a top-flight fixture at Huddersfield Town, with Jack Balmer bagging the other after he had had a penalty saved. Up against the Trotters We have twice faced Bolton Wanderers on this day in history. 1935 - Our top-flight trip to Burnden Park ended goalless. 1918 - We won a Wartime League fixture at home 6-1, with Thomas Green netting twice and John Bamber, Arthur Metcalf, Harry Lewis and Harold Wadsworth all on target. Into the Hall of Fame 2006 - Alan Hansen, Roger Hunt and Ian Rush were all inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. They joined Bill Shankly, Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes, Kevin Keegan and Bob Paisley on the list of legends, with Peter Beardsley and Graeme Souness among those subsequently being included. 2016 – Mark Lawrenson and Billy Liddell both joined the trio in the Hall of Fame. Final caps 2021 – Josh Davison played his fifth and final game for England Under-17’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Belarus. 1994 - Brad Friedel won his last cap as a UCLA player, his 27th in total, as the USA lost 2-1 in a friendly in Saudi Arabia. 1988 - Dean Saunders scored from the spot while winning his final cap as an Oxford United player in Wales’ 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw with Finland in Swansea. Ian Rush also played, while future reds Assistant Manager Colin Pascoe won his first cap as a Sunderland player, with István Kozma also in action. 1986 - Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his fourth and last Under-16’s cap for Norway in their 3-2 win in Denmark. 1957 – Future reds centre-forward Des Palmer won his third and last cap for Wales as they were thumped 4-0 by England in the British International Championships at Ninian Park. Elisha twice Keeper Elisha Scott twice represented Northern Ireland in Belfast against England in the British International Championships on this day in history. 1929 - He played in a 3-0 loss, up against future reds defender Ernie Blenkinsop. 1935 - He featured in a 3-1 defeat, by which time he was a Belfast Celtic player. From back to front 1957 - Keeper Tommy Younger went off injured just before half time but returned as a centre-forward as we lost 2-1 at Derby County. Ronnie Moran took over in goal with the score at 1-0 with Billy Liddell slotting in at left-back. Tony Rowley struck our equaliser, but Moran finally conceded with seven minutes left. Dennis Woodhead netted the last of his four goals against us, with George Darwin also scoring. 1929 - We also visited the Baseball Ground when Jim Smith and Gordon Hodgson struck in our 2-2 First Division draw. Peter Ramage bagged the first of his five goals past the reds, with Harry Bedford grabbing one of his nine. Rewarded 2012 – Young Spanish midfielder Suso signed a new contract, having been a pro at Anfield since November 2010. He notched once in 21 senior outings, moving on to AC Milan in January 2015. Nominated 2008 - Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were both named on a short-list for the Ballon d’Or by France Football magazine. The trophy was eventually claimed by Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo, with Torres finishing in third and Gerrard in tenth. North of the border 1987 - The reds took part in a testimonial match for Dundee’s George McGeachie, winning 4-0. The goals came from a John Barnes brace, Ronnie Whelan and Ray Houghton, who was playing his first reds game. Jan the Man at Aggborough again 2003 - Jan Mølby returned to Kidderminster Harriers as Director of Football. He remained in the role for a year before resigning due to poor results. Other reds games 1991 – Steve McManaman and Ian Rush struck as we drew 2-2 at Chelsea. 1968 – We lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur with Roger Hunt giving us the lead before Jimmy Greaves grabbed two of his twelve goals against the reds. 1963 – Gordon Milne bagged the only goal of West Bromwich Albion’s visit to Anfield. 1901 – We drew 2-2 at Notts County with John Hunter and Jack Cox on the scoresheet. Percy Humphreys scored the first two of his six past us. We had to play the last twenty minutes with just ten men after Maurice Parry had to be carried off with an ankle injury. 1895 – We lost a Second Division fixture 1-0 at Grimsby Town. Also on the move 2015 – Ex-reds First Team Coach Paco Herrera was sacked as Manager of Unión Deportiva Las Palmas for the first time, after fifteen months in charge. 2001 - Jason McAteer joined Sunderland from Blackburn Rovers for £1m. He bagged five goals in 61 appearances for the Black Cats, before moving on to Tranmere Rovers in July 2004. 2000 - Ex-loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe was released by basement side Southend United after just six appearances. 1994 - Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen joined Stoke City from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £300,000. He had netted nine times in 54 outings for Wolves. Kennedy on the mark 1993 - Future red Mark Kennedy struck for the Republic of Ireland Under-18’s as they lost 2-1 in Sweden in a European Championships qualifier. Also in international action 2021 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty appeared for the Irish Under-16’s as they lost 2-1 to Wales in a friendly in Lucan. 2023 - Conall Murtagh played for Northern Ireland Under-17’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 2-1 in Germany. He is now the reds’ Head of Physical Performance.

Mo the best 2018 - Mohamed Salah was named the PFA Player of the Year, after his first campaign with the reds that eventually yielded 44 goals in 52 games in all competitions as he helped us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. To Cardiff once more 2006 - We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford in the FA Cup Semi-final. John Arne Riise’s free-kick opened the scoring before Luis García extended our lead early in the second half with a sublime volley. Didier Drogba’s header, one of his eleven goals past us, ensured a nervous last twenty minutes, but future red Joe Cole blazed over with the Blues’ only real chance of note as we hung on to reach our thirteenth FA Cup Final. En route to gay Paree 1981 - Howard Gayle came on as a substitute for the injured Kenny Dalglish after just nine minutes and ran the Bayern München defence ragged, before later himself being substituted by Jimmy Case. We held the German champions to a 1-1 draw in the Olympic Stadium, with Ray Kennedy putting us in front with just seven minutes left before Karl-Heinz Rummenigge equalised, to make it through to our third European Cup Final in five years, on away goals after a goalless first meeting. Boss Bob Paisley had called this “our biggest test since Rome”, prior to the game. Ernie Pinkney and Walter Wadsworth were also on target with Dave Watson netting twice. Held by the Blues 2008 – We took the lead in the first leg of our Champions League Semi-final against Chelsea shortly before half-time through Dirk Kuyt, before failing to take a number of other good chances. We suffered a sucker punch in the final seconds of time added on when John Arne Riise headed into his own net. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition in four consecutive seasons. 2010 – We also suffered European disappointment, losing 1-0 in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Semi-final at Club Atlético de Madrid, with the reds having to make the long journey to Spain by train following volcanic eruptions over Iceland causing all flights to be grounded. Diego Forlán gave the home side an early lead with one of his four strikes past the reds, with Yossi Benayoun having an equaliser wrongly ruled out for offside. Most recently 2023 – Diogo Jota bagged a brace at Anfield, but relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest twice levelled through ex-red Neco Williams and Morgan Gibbs-White. Baggies bouncing 1967 – West Bromwich Albion won 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to one of Jeff Astle’s seven goals past the reds as winger Peter Thompson appeared for the 200th time. 2012 – Peter Odemwingie struck the only goal of the game as the Baggies won at Anfield for the first time in exactly 45 years, under the management of ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson. Double red 1969 – We were held to a goalless draw at Coventry City with Alun Evans and City’s Maurice Setters both sent off for fighting. Under twelve thousand 1959 - We hosted our lowest post-war League crowd of only 11,976 as we beat Sc***horpe United 3-0 in the Second Division. Alan Arnell netted his 35th and final reds goal, with Billy Liddell and Fred Morris also on the scoresheet. Happy birthday to the reserves 1956 - Left-back Brian Kettle was born in Prescot. He signed for the reds in May 1973 but only made four senior appearances as his route to the first-team was blocked first by Alec Lindsay, then Joey Jones and Alan Kennedy, and he moved to Wigan Athletic in August 1980. 1983 – Former Finnish reserves striker Daniel Sjölund was born in Marieham. He never made the first team after arriving Anfield from West Ham United in November 2000 as part of the deal that took Rigobert Song in the opposite direction, moving on to Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in January 2004. 1993 - Midfielder Craig Roddan was born in Fazakerley. He joined the Academy from Wigan Athletic in 2007 but was released in the summer of 2014. 2001 – Centre-back Morgan Boyes was born in Chester. He put through his own net while making his senior debut in the 5-0 EFL Cup loss at Aston Villa in December 2019, also featuring in the FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield two months later. He moved on to Livingston on a free transfer in January 2022. An eventful friendly for Don 1925 - Scottish left-back Donald McKinlay scored and then replaced Elisha Scott in goal after he was injured at Anfield against Aberdeen. The game ended 1-1. Future reds Rigobert Song and Kolo Touré both played in World Cup qualifying wins on the same day. 2002 - Welsh starred for England Under-19’s as they qualified for the European Championship Finals by beating Lithuania 2-1 at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, with future red Jermaine Pennant on target and future reds Glen Johnson and Gary O’Neil also in action. Aquilani featured for his country again, playing for the Under-18’s as they beat Poland 2-0. Stan the Irish Villain 1998 - Steve Staunton won his 74th cap, and final one in his first spell as an Aston Villa player, as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to Argentina in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. Phil Babb and future red Robbie Keane also played. On the same day, Abel Xavier won his final cap as an SL Benfica player, and fifth in total, as Portugal lost 3-0 to England in a friendly at Wembley. Paul Ince and Michael Owen both featured. Meanwhile, future red Nicolas Anelka made his senior international debut in France’s goalless draw in Sweden and future red Vladimír Šmicer netted as the Czech Republic won 3-1 in Slovenia. Willem Korsten equalised before the break with Patrik Berger putting us ahead from the spot with Robbie Fowler also on the scoresheet. 1992 – Ian Rush netted our equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest after Teddy Sheringham had scored the first of his seven goals past us. 1978 – We bet Norwich City 3-0 in L4.
