Aldo’s debut 1987 - John Aldridge made his reds debut as a substitute for goalscorer Craig Johnston in our 2-2 League draw at Aston Villa, with Paul Walsh bagging his 37th and final reds goal. Villa’s Paul Elliott also struck as Mark Lawrenson put through his own net. Aldo went on to net 63 goals in 104 reds games. 1948 – Right-winger Alex Muir made his reds bow as Middlesbrough won 1-0 in L4 with Micky Fenton bagging the last of his nine goals past us late on. Another win at Camp Nou 2007 - We came from behind to win 2-1 at Barcelona in the first leg of our Champions League Round of 16 meeting. The game was played in the aftermath of a stormy bonding trip to Portugal, with Craig Bellamy allegedly attacking John Arne Riise with a golf club. Perhaps inevitably, it was these two players who struck our goals, with Bellamy celebrating what was to be the final strike of his first reds spell with an imaginary golf swing! Riise’s winner was our 250th goal in the European Cup. Dirk Kuyt hit the crossbar with the home side’s goalscorer Deco also striking the woodwork for the home side. The end of a great career 1934 - Legendary keeper Elisha Scott made his 468th and final reds appearance in a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea, giving a farewell speech to the crowd from the Directors’ box at the end of the match! His career had spanned an amazing 21 years and 52 days. Hughie Gallacher netted the last of his eight goals against the reds, with Eric Oakton also on target as right-back Willie Steel reached a century of reds outings. 1981 – Avi Cohen played his 24th and final reds game as we drew 2-2 in a League game at Brighton & Hove Albion. David Johnson and Terry McDermott netted our goals, with future red Michael Robinson and Gordon Smith scoring for the Seagulls. Sami’s record 2006 - Sami Hyypiä made his 57th consecutive European appearance, a club record for an outfield player. Unfortunately, we lost 1-0 at SL Benfica in the first leg of our Champions League round of sixteen tie. This was the fourth time we had faced the Portuguese side in European competition, more than any other club. We set a new European clean sheet club record of 573 minutes before conceding our hundredth goal in the European Cup, when Luisão headed home late on at the Estádio da Luz. Of even greater concern was the serious eye injury suffered by Momo Sissoko in an innocuous challenge with Beto, which fortunately only kept him out for a month in the end. Kenny steps down 1991 - Kenny Dalglish resigned as reds boss in a board meeting at Anfield. He had been in charge for nearly six years, leading us to the double in his first season, and a further two League titles, FA Cup, two FA Charity Shields and Screen Sport Super Cup. The pressures of management, and his role in counselling players, supporters and the city of Liverpool in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster led to him stepping down. Hitting the Canaries for six 1979 - We crushed Norwich City 6-0 in the League despite their five-man defence, with both Alan and Ray Kennedy getting on the scoresheet. Kenny Dalglish and David Johnson added a brace apiece. Harvey’s ton 2024 – Harvey Elliott reached a century of reds games as we thumped Luton Town 4-1 at Anfield, despite the Hatters leading at half time through Chiedozie Ogbene'’s header. Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo headed in in quick succession to give us the lead. Luis Díaz struck before Elliott rounded off the scoring, with Jayden Danns making his reds bow as a late substitute. Bowing out 2013 – We beat Zenit St. Petersburg 3-1 at Anfield in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie but crashed out on away goals. Jamie Carragher, playing his 150th and last game in Europe, gifted Hulk the ball who gave the visitors the lead. Luis Suárez struck brilliant free-kicks either side of Joe Allen’s goal, but the final decisive goal did not come. Daniel Agger reached 200 reds appearances in this game. 2023 - Mohamed Salah became the club’s outright all-time top scorer in Europe, bagging his 42nd in continental competition inside a quarter of an hour as we raced into an early two-goal lead over the holders Real Madrid in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie at Anfield, after Darwin Núñez had opened the scoring. Vinícius Júnior struck twice to level the game at half time, the most recent of his five goals past us. Éder Militão headed in shortly after the break, with Karim Benzema bagging a brace to secure a 5-2 win, two of his seven strikes against us to date. On our way to Wembley 1988 - A Ray Houghton header saw off Everton at Goodison Park in a live televised FA Cup Fifth Round meeting as we headed towards Wembley yet again. John Barnes debuted his new shaved head in this game! Signing on 1946 – Welsh keeper Cyril Sidlow signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £4,000. He kept 54 clean sheets in 165 reds outings, helping us to claim the League title in his first full season. He was released in June 1952, joining New Brighton before returning to Molineux. Farewell Alf 2004 - Former reds keeper Alf Hobson died in County Durham. He only made 28 senior appearances after signing from Shildon Colliery in April 1936, adding a further 171 reds games in Wartime football. Not on our way to Wembley 1970 - We were knocked out of the FA Cup in the Sixth Round, losing 1-0 at Second Division Watford thanks to Barry Endean’s diving header, in revenge for us knocking them out of the League Cup at Vicarage Road earlier that season. This game prompted Bill Shankly into rebuilding his reds side. Births and a death 1917 - Full-back Jim Harley was born in Methil, Fife. He failed to score in 131 reds appearances after signing from Hearts Of Beath in April 1934, helping us to the League title in 1947 before leaving the following year. 1990 – Brazilian ex-reserves forward Vitor Flora was born in São Joaquim da Barra. He signed from Botafogo on a free transfer in September 2008, returning to his native land to join to Goiás Esporte Clube in April 2010. 2007 – Centre-half Carter Pinnington was born. Hailing from Wirral, he signed pro terms in May 2024 having been at the Academy since Under-7’s level. 1956 – Chairman Will Harrop died. He had been in that role for six years from 1935, returning to the post in 1953. Edging towards the Final 1914 - We held West Ham United to a 1-1 draw in an FA Cup Third Round match, with Tom Miller on target and Syd Puddefoot bagging the first of his six strikes past us. We won the replay 5-1 as we eventually reached our first ever FA Cup Final that season. Beating the Brummies twice in the Cup Back in the 1920’s we twice knocked Birmingham City out of the FA Cup on this day, both times at Anfield at the Third Round stage. 1920 - Goals from Jackie Sheldon and Tom Miller handed us a 2-0 win, with the latter’s goal being his fiftieth reds strike while Sheldon reached a century of reds outings. 1925 - Archie Rawlings and Danny Shone netted as we won 2-1, with George Briggs nabbing the first of his ten goals against the reds. 2014 – Winger Jordon Ibe joined Birmingham City on loan, netting once in eleven outings. Beating the Geordies We have twice defeated Newcastle United in First Division meetings on this day in history. 1976 - Kevin Keegan and Jimmy Case struck as we won 2-0 at Anfield. 1953 - Phil Taylor bagged his 32nd and final reds goal with Sammy Smyth also on the scoresheet in our 2-1 away victory, as Robert Mitchell struck one of his eight goals past us. Reds on target 1978 - David Fairclough and Terry McDermott were both on target as England B beat their West German counterparts 2-1 in Augsburg. Phil Thompson and future reds Joe Corrigan and Alan Kennedy all also played. 2009 – Tom Ince played for England Under-17’s in the Algarve Tournament as they lost 2-0 to the host nation. 2015 – Ibrahima Konaté scored for France Under-16’s in their 1-1 draw with England in the UEFA U16s Development Tournament in Burton, with England winning 4-3 on penalties. Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper taking charge of a side that featured young red Okera Simmonds. Diarra’s debut 2001 - Future red Alou Diarra made his debut for France Under-20’s as they beat Finland 2-1 in Narbonne. Thumping the Blades 1942 - We beat Sheffield United 5-1 in a match that counted for both the Wartime League and the War League Cup. Cyril Done and Billy Liddell both netted braces, with Bill Jones also on target for the reds. On the move 2006 - Mark Wright was appointed as Manager of Chester City for the second time. He had resigned in August 2004 after disagreements with the Board of Directors. He was sacked just fourteen months later, later returning for a third spell. 2015 – Jermaine Pennant signed for Wigan Athletic, scoring three times in thirteen games as they were relegated to League One before choosing to move on at the end of the season. 2021 – Ex-reds scout Jonathan Woodgate was appointed Head Coach of Bournemouth until the end of the campaign, staying in the role until Scott Parker was appointed four months later. Other reds games 2010 – We drew 0-0 at Manchester City after a dull encounter. 1959 – Huddersfield Town held us to a 2-2 draw in the Second Division at Anfield with Kevin McHale giving the visitors the lead before Jimmy Melia drew us level just before the break. Fred Morris scored late on but there was still time for Dick White to head into his own net. 1931 – We won 2-1 at Leeds United, with Dave Wright and Gordon Hodgson netting either side of the last of Russell Wainscott’s five goals against us. 1900 – We lost 2-1 in an FA Cup Second Round replay at West Bromwich Albion with Archibald Dunn and future red Jack Chadburn on target for the home side. Tommy Robertson scored our goal. Also in international action 2024 – Future red Rio Ngumoha came off the bench as England Under-16’s beat Saudi Arabia 3-1 in Spain. 2020 – Kaide Gordon played for England Under-16’s as they beat the USA Under-17’s 4-1 at St. George’s Park. 2018 - Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-19’s as they beat Italy 2-1 in a friendly in Alès. 2017 – Liam Millar played for Canada Under-20’s in their 5-0 CONCACAF Championships group stage mauling by Mexico in Costa Rica. 2016 – Rhian Brewster featured as England Under-16’s beat Italy 1-0 in a friendly at St. George’s Park. 1996 – Future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege both played as Germany won a friendly 2-1 in Portugal. 1993 – Future reds keeper Brad Friedel featured in the USA’s goalless draw with Russia in California. 1990 - Glenn Hysén played in Sweden’s goalless friendly draw in Belgium. 1910 – Alex Raisbeck represented Scotland A as they faced a Scotland B side.

Ten of the best 1896 - We registered our all-time record League victory. George Allan scored four and Malcolm McVean grabbed a hat-trick in our 10-1 Second Division win over Rotherham Town at Anfield. Jimmy Ross added a brace, with Frank Becton also on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, only 2,000 supporters were present that day. Beating the Mancs at last 2006 - Peter Crouch headed the only goal of the game as we beat Manchester United in an FA Cup tie for the first time in 85 years, in our Fifth Round fixture at Anfield. United substitute Alan Smith broke his leg in a challenge with John Arne Riise. We went on to claim the trophy for the seventh time at the end of the season. On the same day, Roy Hodgson took charge of Finland as they lost a friendly 2-0 in Japan, with ex-red Daniel Sjölund featuring. 1976 - We also faced the Red Devils, holding them to a goalless draw at Old Trafford in a League fixture. Five on the look-out 2010 – We played in our first game to be officiated by five match officials as a late David N’Gog header was enough to defeat Romanian side Unirea Urziceni in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie at Anfield. 2016 – We held Augsburg 1907 e. V. to a goalless draw at their WWK Arena in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie. Most recently 2023 – We won 2-0 at Newcastle United, with Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo both netting before Toon keeper Nick Pope was sent off after just 22 minutes. Taking charge 1999 - Kevin Keegan was appointed interim Manager of England, while still in charge of Fulham. He handled both jobs for three months before taking charge of the national side permanently. 2013 - Paul Ince was named as Blackpool boss. He was sacked in January 2014 after leading the Tangerines to twelve wins in 42 games. On the same day, former First Team Coach Paco Herrera was sacked as Manager of Real Club Celta de Vigo. He had led them back into La Liga, but was dismissed as they struggled the following season. Dalglish’s birthday 1977 - King Kenny’s son Paul was born in Glasgow. He never made a first-team appearance in fifteen months at Anfield, going on to play for a host of clubs. 1898 - Winger Cyril Gilhespy was born in Fencehouses, County Durham. He signed from Sunderland for £250 in August 1921, scoring three times in nineteen outings before moving to Bristol City in May 1925. 1910 – Forward Lance Carr was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He signed from Boksburg in September 1933 and struck eight times in 33 games before moving to Newport County in October 1936, whom he helped to claim to the Third Division South title. Four three times We have three times scored four goals on this day. 1961 - The first occasion came when we won 4-1 at Derby County in the Second Division, with Jimmy Melia grabbing a brace, to add to goals from Dave Hickson and Kevin Lewis. 1996 - We thrashed Shrewsbury Town 4-0 in an 11am kick off at Gay Meadow in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie, with Stan Collymore, Jason McAteer and Robbie Fowler netting before a Dave Walton own goal completed the scoring. This was our first game since Bob Paisley’s death four days previously, as we continued towards the Wembley final. The game was rearranged having been postponed a month earlier. 2001 - We secured a 4-2 FA Cup Fourth Round victory over Manchester City at Anfield to help us on our way to part two of the treble. This game was notable for us converting two penalties with different takers – Jari Litmanen early on, our 200th goal under Gérard Houllier’s sole charge, and Vladimír Šmicer after the break. The other goals came from Emile Heskey and Markus Babbel, with Andrei Kanchelskis bagging the last of his five past us and Shaun Goater also scoring. Jocky’s last stand 1987 - Alan Hansen won his 26th and final cap for Scotland as they lost 1-0 at Hampden Park to the Republic of Ireland in a European Championships qualifier, thanks to Mark Lawrenson’s fifth and final goal for his country, his defensive partner at club level. John Aldridge won his first cap as a reds player, his eighth in total, while Ronnie Whelan played at full-back, with future red Ray Houghton also featuring. On the same day, Ian Rush won his thirtieth cap as Wales were held to a goalless friendly draw in Swansea by the USSR. Future red Dean Saunders won his fifth cap as a substitute, his final appearance while still a Brighton & Hove Albion player. Mixed fortunes against the Villains 1939 - We lost 2-0 at Aston Villa in a top-flight encounter with left-winger George Paterson playing his third and final reds game as Harry Broome netted the final two of his five goals against the reds. 1967 - Ian St. John bagged the only goal of our FA Cup Fourth Round meeting at Anfield. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at Everton at the next hurdle. Done deal 1926 - Right-back Bob Done signed as an amateur from Runcorn, signing professional terms two months later. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games, moving on to Reading for £150 in May 1935. Didi’s half century 2004 - Dietmar Hamann won his fiftieth cap for Germany as they won 2-1 in a friendly in Croatia. Jerzy Dudek, Stéphane Henchoz, John Arne Riise and future reds Xabi Alonso, Yossi Benayoun, Mark González, Ragnar Klavan and Bolo Zenden all also represented their countries that evening as future reds coach John Heitinga debuted for the Netherlands in their 1-0 defeat of the USA in Amsterdam. Semi at Anfield 1888 – The first of five FA Cup Semi-finals to be staged at Anfield took place, with losing Finalists Preston North End thumping Crewe Alexandra 4-0. Letting the crown slip 2020 – We lost the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie 1-0 to Club Atlético de Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano where we had claimed the trophy for the sixth time eight months earlier. Saúl Ñíguez struck early on and we struggled to break them down, going on to also lose the Anfield return. Top award for the Museum 2000 - The club’s Museum & Tour Centre scooped a prestigious award at the Merseyside Tourism Awards, claiming the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo award for Best Customer Care, as voted for by the people of Liverpool. First and last caps 2004 - Robbie Foy made his debut for Scotland Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to Hungary in a friendly in Livingston. On the same day, ex-red Jason McAteer won his 52nd and final cap for the Republic of Ireland as they held Brazil to a goalless draw in a friendly at Lansdowne Road, with future red Robbie Keane also featuring. Andriy Voronin won his last cap as a 1. FC Köln player on the same day in a 1-1 friendly draw in Libya. 1976 - Future reds Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness both won their final caps for Scotland at Under-23’s level as they lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in a European Championships qualifier in Breda. 2017 - Liam Millar won his first cap for Canada Under-20’s in their 1-0 defeat by Honduras in a CONCACAF Championships group game in Costa Rica. St. Michael for England 2004 - Michael Owen played as England drew 1-1 in a friendly in Portugal, with Jamie Carragher, Emile Heskey and future red Joe Cole also featuring. Ex-red David James won his first cap as a Manchester City player, and 22nd in total. 1997 - Michael turned out for the Under-18’s as they thumped their Scottish counterparts 4-1 in a friendly. On the move 2021 – Ex-reds right-winger Toni Silva signed for Tobol in Kazakhstan. 2020 - Emre Can joined Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund from Juventus for €25m, having joined them on loan the previous month. 2013 – Left-back Jack Robinson joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan, playing eleven times for them. 1994 - Ex-reds reserves midfielder Kevin Lampkin signed for Mansfield Town on a free transfer from Huddersfield Town, after thirteen appearances for the Terriers. He struck three goals in 45 games for the Stags before moving into non-League football with Ilkeston Town. Also in international action 2015 – Future red Ibrahima Konaté played as France Under-16’s beat Switzerland 2-1 in the UEFA U16s Development Tournament at St. George’s Park in Burton. A reds stalwart passes on 2004 - Geoff Twentyman died in a Southport hospital after a long illness. He played 184 times at left-half after signing from Carlisle United for £10,000 in December 1953, bagging nineteen goals. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a position he held for nineteen years. Among the players he recommended to the club were Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, Phil Neal, Ian Rush and John Toshack. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia in their 5-2 friendly defeat in Malta. Happy birthday Rickie 1982 - Rickie Lambert was born in Kirkby. The boyhood red signed from Southampton for £4m in June 2014, netting three times in 36 games before moving on to West Bromwich Albion in July 2015. Harry’s farewell 2008 - Harry Kewell played his 139th and final reds game as we were dumped out of the FA Cup by Barnsley, coming off the bench to replace Ryan Babel. Dirk Kuyt gave us the lead but the Tykes hit back through Stephen Foster’s header, with the reds missing a host of good chances before a late, late Brian Howard strike consigned us to a 2-1 Fifth Round defeat at Anfield. Keeper Charles Itandje was making his seventh and last reds appearance. Reds debutants 1992 - Hungarian István Kozma made his reds debut as a substitute for Jamie Redknapp in a goalless FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Ipswich Town. Jack Balmer scored the fastest derby goal in history, inside the first fifteen seconds, with John Shafto adding a brace in the final ten minutes, the last of his seven reds strikes. Tommy Lawton bagged one of his six derby goals for the Blues. Half ton for Al 2021 – Alisson Becker kept his fiftieth clean sheet in his 114th game for the reds as we beat RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. 2-0 behind closed doors in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie in Budapest. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané both struck in the second half. 1907 – Sam Raybould scored as he played his 200th League game for the reds as we won 3-2 at The Wednesday, with Bill McPherson and Jack Cox also netting. A new England keeper 1907 - Keeper Sam Hardy made his England debut as they beat Ireland 1-0 in a British International Championships game at Goodison Park. He went on to win 21 caps in total. Jack’s farewell 1952 - Jack Balmer played his 288th and final reds League game in a 1-1 home draw with Charlton Athletic, with Cyril Done netting his 37th and last reds goal and Billy Kiernan nabbing one of his five goals against us. During his reds career he scored an impressive 110 goals in 309 games in all competitions. Gunned out 2014 – We lost 2-1 at Arsenal in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup, when we fell behind to goals from future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski before Steven Gerrard pulled a goal back from the spot. We were later denied a second blatant penalty claim as the home side went on to lift the trophy for the eleventh time later that year. Other cup wins 2022 – Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah struck after the break as we won the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie 2-0 at Internazionale, on our way to the Final in Paris. 1980 – We won an FA Cup Fifth Round tie with Bury 2-0 at Anfield with both goals coming from substitute David Fairclough. Keith Kennedy lined up against his brother Alan for the first time in this game. Unfortunately, we fell at the Semi-final to Arsenal, after four matches. 1898 - Our other FA Cup win on this day in history saw us come from behind to beat Newton Heath, who later became Manchester United, 2-1 in a Second Round replay thanks to left-back Billy Dunlop’s first reds goal and forward Dan Cunliffe’s sixth and final reds goal. However, we were knocked out by Derby County in the next round. Forward Joe Lumsden was making his eighth and last reds appearance. First defeat 1895 - We suffered our first Anfield defeat in the FA Cup, in our fifth home fixture in this competition. Nottingham Forest won 2-0 in this Second Round tie. Keeper Bill McCann made his seventeenth and last reds appearance. Macca the captain 1993 - Steve McManaman skippered the England Under-21’s for the first time as they thumped San Marino 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Kenilworth Road. McManaman scored, as did future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron and Jamie Redknapp on his debut. Fellow red Rob Jones also made his Under-21’s bow in this game. Five for Thomas 1918 - Thomas Bennett struck five goals, scoring in his third consecutive game as we trounced Burnley 7-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League game. Happy birthday Digger 1963 - John Barnes was born at Up Park in Kingston, Jamaica. He signed from Watford for £900,000 in June 1987, a transfer that had been heavily trailed for at least six months. Kopites were not disappointed by his performances once he had arrived, as he helped us to two League titles, FA Cup, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields during an Anfield career in which he scored 108 goals in 407 appearances. He was also twice voted Football Writers’ Player Of The Year, as well as once by his fellow players, joining Newcastle United on a free transfer in August 1997. He became a father for the seventh time on his 47th birthday. Anfield goalscoring feats 1992 - Ian Rush scored his 200th League goal, including fourteen for Chester. Jimmy Phillips scored the first Premier League penalty against the reds as we beat Middlesbrough 4-1. Ronnie Rosenthal grabbed a brace, with Steve McManaman also on target, while future reds bench-warmer Stephen Pears was in the visitors’ goal. The Blues had Eamonn O’Keefe dismissed for a high, late challenge on Ronnie Whelan, with Mick Ferguson netting for the visitors. Farewell to Melwood 2020 – The reds trained at Melwood for the last time, ahead of the move to Kirkby. It had been the club’s training ground since the 1950’s. Alisson Becker flapped at a cross to score an early own goal, with Trent Alexander-Arnold levelling before the break. Pablo Fornals and Kurt Zouma both struck in the second half, before Divock Origi netted. More birthdays 1877 – Welsh international right-half Maurice Parry was born in Trefonen, Shropshire. He signed from Brighton United in August 1900, scoring four times in 221 reds games, moving on to Partick Thistle in May 1909, later spending time coaching back at Anfield. 1927 – Outside-right Don Woan was born in Liverpool. He signed from Bootle Athletic for £1,000, but only played two senior games before moving on to Leyton Orient in November 1951. 1990 – Spanish centre-half Daniel Ayala was born in Seville. He signed from Sevilla for £160,000 in September 2007, making his senior debut as substitute in our 2-1 League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in August 2009, and his first start as we thumped Stoke City 4-0 at Anfield three days later. He played five reds games in total before being sold to Norwich City for £850,000 in August 2011 after loan spells at Hull City and Derby County. Gloves on and off 1919 - Pre-war reds custodian Ned Doig died from Spanish flu. He made 53 reds appearances after signing from Sunderland for £150 in August 1904, helping us to the Second Division title in his first season, and played on until 1908, finishing as our oldest ever player aged 41 years and 165 days. 1997 - Reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Swindon Town on loan, where he made three first-team appearances. 1977 - Steve Ogrizovic signed from Chesterfield for £70,000. He only made five first-team starts in five years at Anfield as understudy to Ray Clemence, sitting on the bench on a further 27 occasions. Derby disappointment 1998 - Jamie Redknapp grabbed our late consolation as we lost 2-1 at home to Derby County, Roy Evans’ last League game as joint Manager.
