Happy birthdays 1926 - Inside-forward Kevin Baron was born in Preston. The Anfield favourite arrived from his hometown side as an amateur in September 1944, signing pro terms in August 1945. He made 153 reds appearances, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, nabbing 32 goals. He moved on to Southend United in May 1954. 1981 - Grégory Vignal was born in Montpellier. James Milner had an early penalty saved, but Lazar Marković and Daniel Sturridge were on target after the break. 2008 – Andrea Dossena played his first reds game as we drew 1-1 with Wisla Kraków in Fribourg in Switzerland. Andriy Voronin bagged our goal. 2003 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both played their first reds games as we drew 1-1 with Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road, with Michael Owen on target. The game was a testimonial match for Crewe’s Steve Macauley and Shaun Smith, held over from the season before. Diarra’s day 2002 - We won 1-0 at Le Havre AC as we kicked off our pre-season schedule. International beginnings 1976 - Future red Avi Cohen played his first senior game for his country as Israel were held to a goalless draw by Guatemala in the Olympics in Toronto. 2003 – Future red Daniel Agger made his debut for Denmark Under-20’s, netting his only goal at this level as they beat Wales 2-0 in a NI Milk Cup game in Northern Ireland. Yossi to England 2005 - Yossi Benayoun signed for West Ham United from Real Racing Club de Santander for £2.5m. He struck eight times in 72 games for the Hammers before joining the reds for £5m in July 2007, featuring for the losing side in the 2006 FA Cup Final. Moving on 1928 - Forward Tom Devlin was sold to Swindon Town for £250, having failed to make our first team. Grég sees red 2000 - Grégory Vignal was sent off as France Under-18’s beat a Czech Republic side that included future red Milan Baroš 1-0 in a European Championship Finals group game in Bavaria. More moves 1999 - Stan Collymore joined Fulham on loan from Aston Villa. He scored just once in nine appearances for the Cottagers before returning to Villa Park. He was then moved on to Leicester City on a free transfer a few months later, at a loss to Villa of £7m. 2000 - Ex-reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed for Italian side Ternana from Crystal Palace for £100,000. He stayed there for two seasons before moving on to Lecce. 2012 – Right-back Nathaniel Clyne joined Southampton from Crystal Palace after one goal in 139 games for the Eagles. Future Assistant Manager Sean O'Driscoll was named Nottingham Forest boss on the same day. He was sacked just five months later after only leading them to ten wins in 26 games in charge. 2013 – Future reds midfielder Fabinho joined AS Monaco on loan from Rio Ave, eventually making the move permanent in May 2015. He struck 31 times in 233 games for the French side before joining the reds for an initial £39m in July 2018. On the same day, centre-half Ben Davies joined York City on loan from Preston North End, playing 47 times for the Minstermen. 2014 – Forward Steven Gillespie signed for newly promoted Conference Premier side Altrincham. He netted once in 22 outings before moving on to Warrington Town. 2022 – Ben Davies was sold to Rangers for a reported initial £3m, having failed to make a senior appearance since signing from Preston North End for an initial £500,000 in February 2021. Arrivederci JAR 2008 - John Arne Riise was sold to Roma for £4m after 348 reds appearances and 31 goals since his arrival for the same fee from AS Monaco in June 2001. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1937 – Forward Ted Harston signed from Mansfield Town for £300,000 after an amazing 81 goals in seventy Third Division North outings. However, he only played a further three games, returning to amateur football with Shorts in the Kent League in August 1939 after suffering a broken leg that ended his professional career. Thommo departs 2004 - Phil Thompson stepped down as Assistant Manager. He had been in this role for five years after Gérard Houllier hired him early on in his reign. Thommo stepped into the breach for much of the 2001/02 season while Houllier was recovering from heart surgery, helping us to reach the Quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League and finish second in the League. 1932 – Centre-forward Jimmy Smith left the reds to move into amateur football with Tunbridge Wells Rangers. He still holds the British seasonal scoring record, netting 66 for Ayr United in 1927/28. He signed for the reds from Ayr for £5,500 in September 1929, going on to bag 38 goals in 62 reds games including two on his debut against Manchester United. Razor on target in New York 1994 - Ex-red Ray Houghton bagged the only goal of the game at the Giants Stadium in New York as the Republic of Ireland upset the odds to beat Italy in their opening World Cup game. Fellow ex-reds John Aldridge and Steve Staunton also played, as did future reds Phil Babb and Jason McAteer. This was the first time the Irish had beaten Italy in eight attempts. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland in their 1-1 draw with the USA in Detroit. A reds friendly 1948 - We beat Swedish side Djurgårdens IF 3-2 in a friendly in Brooklyn, New York City. Billy Liddell, Ken Brierley and Jack Balmer netted for the reds. Three amigos 2008 - With Spain already having qualified for the Quarter-finals as group winners, Fernando Torres was rested alongside many first-choice players, meaning that Xabi Alonso skippered the side to a 2-1 European Championships Finals defeat of Greece in Salzburg, with Álvaro Arbeloa and Pepe Reina also playing, while Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his final cap as an Eintracht Frankfurt player for the Greeks. Happy birthday Jerzy 1973 - Jerzy Dudek was born in Rybnik. The big Pole in our goal made 186 reds appearances after signing from Feyenoord for £4.85m in August 2001, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He left to join Real Madrid in July 2007, although he barely featured for their first team. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh took charge of his first reds game as Jack Haigh nabbed the only goal of our top-flight meeting with Charlton Athletic at Anfield. Left-back Eddie Spicer reached a century of League appearances in this game. Away goals galore 1985 - John Wark netted an eighteen-minute hat-trick in our 5-0 win at West Bromwich Albion, with Steve Nicol and Kenny Dalglish also on target, while Bruce Grobbelaar saved a Derek Statham penalty. Other births and deaths 1983 - Former reserves right-back Jon Otsemobor was born in Speke, Liverpool. He signed pro terms on his seventeenth birthday but played just six first-team games for us, before joining Rotherham United in July 2005. 1914 - Centre-half Norman Low was born in Aberdeen. He joined the reds in October 1933 but only played thirteen times while at Anfield, deputising for Tom Bradshaw, before moving on to Newport County in November 1936. 1908 – John Charlton was born in Leadgate, County Durham. He signed from Bradford City in October 1929, but only played three senior games before moving on to Derry City in 1932. 1947 – David Ashworth died. He was appointed as reds boss in December 1919. He had previously guided Oldham Athletic from non-League into the top flight, to whom he returned in December 1922 with the reds en route to retaining the League title he had led them to the previous season. 2011 – Ex-reds midfielder Trevor Storton died. He struck eight times in 118 League games for Tranmere Rovers before switching to Anfield for £25,000 in July 1972. He only played twelve times in two years before joining Chester, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. Double departure 1897 – Forward Malcolm McVean and inside-right Jimmy Ross were both sold to Burnley, although the Clarets got relegated at the end of that campaign. McVean had signed from Third Lanark in 1892, scoring our first ever League goal, bagging 43 in total in 126 reds games. He helped us to the Lancashire League title and two Second Division championships. Ross was known as the ‘little demon’, signing from the ‘invincible’ Preston North End for a club record £75 in August 1894, helping us to the Second Division title, scoring 39 times in 85 reds games and captaining the side. Meanwhile, former reds reserves midfielder Jim Magilton won his first Northern Ireland cap as a Southampton player as they beat Romania 2-0 in a friendly at Windsor Park. 2017 – Rhian Brewster bagged a brace as England Under-17’s beat the Czech Republic 5-3 in a European Championships qualifier in Bosnia & Herzegovina, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Meanwhile, Bernard Diomède was managing France Under-18’s to a 2-1 friendly defeat of Germany in Chauny. Stig on the way out 2000 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye was loaned out to Brøndby IF. He netted twice in thirteen League games for the Danish side and was sold to Blackburn Rovers within a month of his return to Anfield. 1999 - Reserves midfielder Danny Williams joined Wrexham on a free, bagging four goals in 48 games. He was then signed by Jan Mølby for Kidderminster Harriers. Alf’s last strike 1968 - Centre-forward Alf Arrowsmith struck his final reds goal as we won 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday. His 24 goals came in 56 games. 1901 - We also faced The Wednesday, being held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield in another top-flight encounter, with Sam Raybould grabbing our goal and Fred Spiksley scoring one of his four against the reds. Anfield first 1893 – The first testimonial to be played by the reds at Anfield saw Bootle Boys Brigade beaten 1-0 in a match staged in aid of Liverpool Caledonians’ David Kirkwood. John Miller scored the goal. A semi-final thriller 1899 - We drew an FA Cup Semi-final replay 4-4 with Sheffield United at Burnden Park. Harkness starts out 1989 - Steve Harkness signed as a professional for Carlisle United. He played thirteen times before being signed by Kenny Dalglish four months later. Future reds Joe Gomez, Sadio Mané, Joël Matip, Victor Moses and Xherdan Shaqiri were also in international action that day. 1991 - Sami Hyypiä won his first cap at any level, playing for Finland Under-18’s as they were held to a goalless draw by Yugoslavia in a friendly in Italy. 2019 – Ex-red Toni Silva won his first cap as an Al Ittihad Alexandria Club player as Guinea-Bissau drew 2-2 with Mozambique in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Bissau, as Abel Xavier took charge of the visitors for the final time. Ex-red Sebastián Coates won his first cap as a Sporting Clube de Portugal player while facing Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and future red Alisson Becker as Brazil thumped Uruguay 4-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Montevideo. Sadio Mané featured for Senegal in a 1-1 friendly draw with Nigeria in Barnet on the same day, while future red Dominic Solanke converted a spot-kick as England Under-20’s drew 2-2 with Portugal in a tournament in France, the fourth consecutive game at his level he had scored in. Galatasaray’s Ozan Kabak scored while captaining Turkey Under-17’s to a 4-1 defeat of Finland in a European Championships qualifier in Antalya. Tosh the boss again 1995 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Deportivo La Coruña, although he did not take over for another three months. He lasted a year and a half before he resigned, during which time they beat Real Madrid to win the Supercopa, the Spanish equivalent of the Charity Shield. Kenny and Jimmy for their countries 1982 - Kenny Dalglish netted in Scotland’s 2-1 friendly defeat of the Netherlands at Hampden Park. Future red John Wark also played. 1976 - Jimmy Case struck on his Under-23’s debut as England played their last ever fixture at this level, beating Hungary 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Old Trafford, although they went out on aggregate. Happy birthday Ronnie 1934 - Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran was born in Crosby. He spent 49 years at Anfield, making 379 senior appearances and bagging seventeen goals. He helped us to win the Second Division in 1963 and the League title the following year, before joining the coaching staff. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment, having another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation. He died in March 2017. 1980 – Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen was born in Asnæs. He was signed by Roy Hodgson for £4.5m from Juventus in August 2010 and played 21 reds games without scoring, moving on to French side Évian Thonon Gaillard a year later. 1973 - Goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero was born in Castellón de la Plana. He played for a variety of clubs in Spain, including Real Murcia, and joined the staff at Melwood in July 2007 after José Ochotorena left to join Valencia. He then followed Rafael Benítez to Internazionale. 1962 – Former Head of the Academy medical department Dave Galley was born in Stoke-on-Trent. He had roles with Port Vale, Fulham, Luton Town and Sheffield Wednesday before joining the reds as a physiotherapist in the summer of 1999. He returned to the club in 2009, moving on to Sunderland a year later. Another record for Rushie 1995 - Ian Rush equalled Denis Law’s FA Cup scoring record of 41 goals as we beat Wimbledon 2-0 at Selhurst Park in a Fifth Round replay. John Barnes was also on target. Rush went on to net 44 FA Cup goals in total, still a competition record. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur in the next round. Wembley disappointment 2016 – We lost the League Cup Final to Manchester City on penalties. Fernandinho put the Sky Blues ahead shortly after the break, with Philippe Coutinho equalising to send the game into extra time. Emre Can converted the first spot kick before Fernandinho missed. However, Lucas, Coutinho and Adam Lallana’s efforts were all saved as we lost the shoot-out 3-1. Youngsters making their mark 2024 – Forward Lewis Koumas scored on his reds bow as we beat Southampton 3-0 at Anfield in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup, with Jayden Danns bagging a brace, also his first goals for the club. Midfielder Trey Nyoni came off the bench to become our youngest ever player in the competition, aged sixteen years and 243 days. Seven thousand goals 2021 – Curtis Jones opened the scoring behind closed doors at Sheffield United as we won 2-0. Roberto Firmino’s strike deflected off Kean Bryan in what was our 7,000th goal in top-flight football, becoming the second club to reach that landmark. Off the mark 1987 - John Aldridge bagged his first reds goal to hand us a 1-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield. Centre-forward Alan Irvine made his fourth and final senior reds appearance in this game, coming on as a substitute for Gary Gillespie, with Ian Rush moving back into midfield to accommodate him. 1981 - We also entertained the Saints, with Ray Kennedy and Terry McDermott on target in a 2-0 win. 1914 – Forward Jimmy Nicholl struck his first reds goal in our 2-2 draw at Oldham Athletic, with Arthur Metcalf also on target. Centre-forward Tommy Gracie played his 34th and final reds game, while right-back Ephraim Longworth put through his own net, with Ollie Tummon also on target. 1920 – Notts County were beaten 3-0 in L4, thanks to Albert Pearson’s fourth and final reds goal, with Jackie Sheldon and Tom Miller also on target. Red trebles 1931 - South African forward Gordon Hodgson netted a hat-trick, including a penalty, in a 5-2 home League win over Blackpool with centre-half Norman James making his reds bow. Archie McPherson added a brace as Jimmy Hampson netted the first of his six goals against the reds and Jack Oxberry also on target. 1953 - Louis Bimpson bagged all three goals in our 3-2 friendly defeat of Burnley. Carra the top personality 2005 - Jamie Carragher was awarded the Merseyside Sports Personality of the Year in a ceremony organised by the Liverpool Echo. Friedel’s debut 1998 - Brad Friedel made his reds bow in a 2-1 League defeat at Aston Villa. Michael Owen bagged our goal from the spot, with ex-red Stan Collymore netting both of the home side’s goals in John Gregory’s first game as Villa boss. 2001 - Friedel won his 67th cap for the USA, his first one as a Blackburn Rovers player, in their 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Mexico. The game was played in the Columbus Crew Stadium, where he used to play his club football. Second-rate King Kenny 1984 - Kenny Dalglish made his first reserves appearance for the reds, nearly seven years into his Anfield career. He had been out of action for two months since fracturing a cheekbone against Manchester United. Only 360 fans were there to see him lay on a goal for Paul Jewell as he played the full ninety minutes. On the same day, Graeme Souness captained Scotland to a 2-1 victory over Wales in the British International Championships at Hampden Park, with Ian Rush and ex-reds Joey Jones and Frank McGarvey also featuring. Twice against Boro 1903 - We won 2-0 at Linthorpe Road, with Sam Raybould and Edgar Chadwick on target in this top-flight meeting with Middlesbrough, our first visit to Boro and only fixture at this venue. 2009 – We lost 2-0 at the Riverside Stadium. A Xabi Alonso own goal handed the home side the lead with Tuncay also netting. Martin Škrtel had a rare outing at right-back. Derby action We twice faced Derby County on this day during the 1970s. 1970 - We lost 2-0 at Anfield, one of just eleven home League defeats in the entire decade. This was the Rams’ first win in L4 since December 1937 after fourteen unsuccessful visits. David Johnson netted twice with Graeme Souness also scoring and ex-red Brian Hall on the losing side. We went as far as the Semi-final that season before losing to Manchester United. On target again 2010 - We scored in our 25th consecutive home League game as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1. Fábio Aurélio played his 110th and final game of his first spell at Anfield. Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres struck in the first half, either side of a Keith Andrews penalty after Jamie Carragher’s inadvertent handball. First time as a red 1999 - Rigobert Song won his first cap as a reds player as Cameroon beat Mozambique 1-0 in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in Yaoundé. International beginning and end 2006 - Ex-reds keeper Tony Warner won his first cap for Trinidad & Tobago as a substitute in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Iceland at Loftus Road. Future reds Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Andriy Voronin also played for their countries while Scott Carson, Darren Potter, future reds Alberto Aquilani, Raul Meireles and James Milner, and ex-red Michael Foley-Sheridan all featured in Under-21’s friendlies on the same day, with future red Glen Johnson winning his fourteenth and final cap at this level as England beat Norway 3-1 in Reading, with John Welsh playing for the first time since moving permanently to Hull City. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson took charge of Finland in the Cyprus Tournament. 2012 – Future red Lazar Marković made his senior international debut for Serbia as they beat Armenia 2-0 in a friendly in Cyprus. Meanwhile, Conor Coady captained England Under-19’s in their 2-1 friendly victory over the Czech Republic in London, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. 1925 – Ex-red Harry Beadles won his second and final cap for Wales in their 2-1 defeat by England in the British International Championships at Vetch Field. 1995 – Future red Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his sixteenth and last Under-17’s cap for Iceland as they were trounced 6-1 by Scotland in the Portugal Tournament. International reds in action 2001 - Nick Barmby bagged the first England goal of Sven-Göran Eriksson’s reign, with Emile Heskey also netting in a 3-0 friendly defeat of Spain at Villa Park, as Michael Owen won his 25th cap. Ex-red David James also played. On the same day, Igor Bišcan came on as a substitute in Croatia’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Austria in Rijeka, winning his twelfth cap, and first as a reds player, with future red Alex Manninger also playing. Also in action that day were Sander Westerveld, who kept a clean sheet against Turkey at the Amsterdam ArenA, Sami Hyypiä, Vladimír Šmicer and ex-red Jim Magilton. Future red Abel Xavier appeared in Portugal’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Andorra in Funchal. Meanwhile, Feyenoord’s Jerzy Dudek won his tenth cap as Poland thumped a Switzerland side that included Stéphane Henchoz 4-0. On the move 1978 – Centre-half Max Thompson was sold to Blackpool for £80,000. He had become the club’s youngest ever player in May 1974, aged seventeen years and 129 days, standing in for John Toshack four days after the FA Cup had been won in 1974, having only turned pro four months earlier. He only made one more senior appearance. 2011 – Reserves forward David Amoo joined Hull City on loan, netting once in seven games for the Tigers. 2013 - Kevin MacDonald was appointed Manager of Swindon Town after Paolo Di Canio’s resignation. He led them to the League One play-offs at the end of that season, where they missed out in the Semi-final. However, he left by mutual consent after just fourteen games and five months in charge. 2022 – Rigobert Song was appointed Manager of Cameroon for the second time. He guided them to the World Cup Finals later that year when they beat Brazil but still failed to reach the knock-out phase. Other reds games 1996 – We beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 in an FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Anfield as we headed towards Wembley. Robbie Fowler headed in before Stan Collymore struck. 1959 – We won a Second Division fixture 3-1 at Leyton Orient, with Jimmy Melia, Fred Morris and Alan A’Court all getting on the scoresheet. 1948 – We lost 3-1 at Chelsea, with Kevin Baron nabbing our goal. 1925 – We lost 3-0 at Sunderland. Charlie Buchan scored one of his 21 goals past us, with Billy Ellis scoring before Billy Clunas converted a penalty. In comes Martin 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel signed from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m to become our most expensive defender to date. The tough Slovakian notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. On the same day, ex-red Nicolas Anelka joined Chelsea from Bolton Wanderers for £15m, netting 59 times in 185 appearances before signing for Shanghai Shenhua in December 2001. Happy birthday Emile 1978 - Emile Heskey was born in Leicester. He arrived from Leicester City for a then club record £10.5m in March 2000, and struck sixty goals in 223 reds games, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield in his four years at Anfield. He moved to Birmingham City for £6.25m in May 2004. 1972 – Former Under-13’s Coach Mike Sheron was born in Liverpool. He was at Kirkby between July 2011 and August 2013. 1923 – Inside-right Tom Bennett died from tuberculosis, aged just 31. He only managed one senior appearance, a 1-0 defeat at Chelsea in October 1919 after arriving from South Liverpool in 1916, although he had struck an amazing 77 times in seventy wartime games. Heading towards Wembley 2012 – We secured a club record fifth consecutive away win in the League Cup when an early Steven Gerrard penalty gave us a 1-0 victory in the first leg of our Semi-final at Manchester City. Carra’s League bow 1997 - Jamie Carragher made his League debut in a goalless draw with West Ham United at Anfield. 1958 – Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower made his reds bow as we beat Fulham 2-1 in a Second Division fixture in L4 as we set a new club record of scoring in 31 consecutive games in all competitions. Outside-right Tony McNamara struck his third and last reds goal with Louis Bimpson also scoring and Tosh Chamberlain bagging the last of his four past us. 800 for Cally 1977 - Ian Callaghan made his 800th reds appearance as we beat Crystal Palace 3-2 at Selhurst Park in an FA Cup Third Round replay, on our way to Wembley that season. Paul Hinshelwood gave the visitors the lead from distance before Kevin Keegan equalised, with Steve Heighway then bagging a brace, and George Graham adding a late second for Palace, the final one of his four strikes past us. Cally played a club-record 857 games in total. Two in 2007 - Young Argentine left-back Emiliano Insúa signed on loan from Boca Juniors, making the move permanent in August 2007. He made 62 senior appearances, netting his only goal in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009. He joined Galatasaray on loan in August 2010, leaving permanently for Sporting Clube de Portugal a year later. On the same day, Swedish attacking midfielder Astrit Ajdarević reportedly signed from Falkenbergs FF. He failed to make the first-team squad, moving on to Leicester City in June 2009. Meanwhile, Djimi Traoré joined Portsmouth from Charlton Athletic for £1m, after just five months with the Addicks. He turned out fifteen times for Pompey, after just thirteen outings in south London. A Cup record 1922 - We thrashed Sunderland 5-0 in an FA Cup First Round replay, our record win in the competition against top-flight opposition. Dick Forshaw and Harry Chambers both bagged braces, with Walter Wadsworth also on target. Chambers struck the ball so hard for one of his goals that the ball ended up deflated in the back of the net! This was David Ashworth’s hundredth game in charge of the reds. Most recently 2020 – We won 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur’s new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, thanks to a Roberto Firmino strike. This left us with a sixteen-point lead at the top of the table, with a game in hand to boot. More League Cup wins 2005 - Steven Gerrard bagged the only goal of the game as we beat First Division Watford 1-0 in the first leg of our Carling Cup Semi-final at Anfield. We won the return by the same score to reach our tenth League Cup Final. 2017 – We lost 1-0 in the first leg of our EFL Cup Semi-final at Southampton, with Nathan Redmond on target. Sadly, we lost the Anfield return by the same score to fall at the final hurdle. Sadio Mané missed the game as he was playing for Senegal in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Congo DR in Brazzaville ahead of the African Cup of Nations. 1995 - An Ian Rush strike handed us a 1-0 Coca-Cola Cup win over Arsenal at Anfield. Court drama again 2010 – The club won a second case in the High Court against current owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks. The sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures was finally completed the next day, after a testing week for employees and fans alike. Thumping the Rams 1978 - We trounced an injury-hit Derby County 5-0 at Anfield in a First Division fixture with Ray Kennedy and Kenny Dalglish each netting twice, after David Johnson had grabbed the only goal of the first half. Suspended 1895 – Centre-forward George Allan was suspended for eight matches by the Scottish FA, four months after arriving from Leith Athletic in a £100 deal. This was due to him having also signed for St. Bernard’s at the same time as moving to Anfield! He went on to score 56 goals in 96 reds games across two spells, and also has the distinction of being the first reds player to represent Scotland. Held at Anfield 2006 - Craig Bellamy was on target with a header against his former employers as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Blackburn Rovers at home in the League, after Benni McCarthy had given the visitors a surprise early lead. 2017 – Manchester United left L4 with a point after a disappointing goalless draw. On the same day, Andy Robertson skippered Scotland as they lost a UEFA Nations League game 2-0 in Israel with Diogo Jota scoring his first goal for Portugal Under-21’s as they trounced Liechtenstein 9-0 in a qualifier in Vaduz. On the move again 1999 - Bruce Grobbelaar signed for Northwich Victoria on non-contract terms, although he only stayed at the Victoria Stadium for three weeks. 2005 - Former reserves defender Alan Navarro joined Macclesfield Town on a free transfer from Accrington Stanley. He is now with League One outfit Swindon Town. 2010 – Ex-reds reserves custodian Tony Warner rejoined Leeds United on a short-term deal, to play for their reserves. 2012 – Warner moved on again, signing for Maltese side Floriana. -
Happy birthdays 1937 - Utility player Geoff Strong was born in Kirkheaton, Northumberland. He made 201 reds appearances after moving from Arsenal in November 1964 for a club record £40,000, netting 33 times and winning a League title medal and the FA Charity Shield the year after helping us to our first ever FA Cup triumph. He left the reds to join Coventry City for £29,500 in August 1970. Sadly, he died in June 2013 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. 2005 – Forward Lewis Koumas was born in Chester. He arrived as a midfielder from Tranmere Rovers at Under-11’s level, signing pro terms in January 2023. He scored while making his senior bow as we beat Southampton 3-0 in an FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Anfield in February 2024. 1940 - Winger Kevin Lewis was born in Ellesmere Port. He played 82 games in his three years at Anfield after signing from Sheffield United for a club record £13,000 in June 1960 as Bill Shankly’s second capture, helping us to the Second Division title and scoring an impressive 44 times. He returned to Yorkshire in August 1963 to join Huddersfield Town. 1929 - Forward Tony Rowley was born in Porthcawl. He bagged a treble on his debut after signing from Stourbridge in October 1953, going on to net 38 times in 61 reds games. He moved to Third Division Tranmere Rovers in March 1958, continuing to score at a rate of one goal every other game. For Cally 1977 - A testimonial match for Ian Callaghan was staged at Anfield against Bill Shankly’s Lancashire XI. Cally scored in the reds’ 4-2 defeat, with our other score coming from an own goal. 1955 – A benefit match for left-back Eddie Spicer was held in front of 41,266 at Anfield, with a ‘Liverton’ side facing a Lancashire XI that included Bert Trautmann, Stanley Matthews and Don Revie. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving with the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to score twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title as well as playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg had ended his career in December 1953. Signing on 2020 - Diogo Jota signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £41m, with Ki-Jana Hoever moving in the opposite direction for an initial £9m after one goal in four senior games. Jota scored 56 times in 145 appearances in his first four seasons at Anfield, helping us to claim the FA Cup and League Cup. On the same day, forward Taiwo Awoniyi joined Union Berlin on loan, scoring five times in 22 games that season. 2023 – Young Scottish winger Ben Doak signed a new contract, By the end of that season, he had played ten senior reds games. Hat-tricks 2010 – Dimitar Berbatov grabbed three of his five goals to date past us as we lost 3-2 at Manchester United. Steven Gerrard struck both our goals as we came from two goals behind, a free-kick and then one from the spot, but the home side struck a late winner. 1925 - Dick Forshaw bagged a treble in our 5-0 thumping of Manchester United at Anfield, with Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and outside-right Archie Rawlings nabbing his tenth and last reds goal. He struck eight reds hat-tricks in all, including one against Everton a week later, and another against United eleven months later. 1931 - Legendary blue Dixie Dean bagged a treble as Everton beat the reds 3-1, three of his nineteen derby strikes, with centre-forward Dave Wright netting our consolation. 1953 - Louis Bimpson grabbed all four goals of our game against Burnley at Anfield to record our hundredth competitive hat-trick. Right-back Bert Childs played the first of just two reds games while Billy Liddell reached 300 outings for the club. European records 1967 - We played our first ever game in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, winning 2-0 at Swedes Malmö FF, thanks to a brace of headers from Tony Hateley. 1973 - Only 7,000 turned up for the opening game of our European Cup campaign at the Stade de la Frontière, the lowest attendance of any reds game in Europe, home or away, with some sources stating the gate to be as low as 5,000. Brian Hall opened the scoring, but we could only draw 1-1 with Luxembourg’s Jeunesse D’Esch with Gilbert Dussier nabbing a late equaliser. Last outings 2017 – Right-back Jon Flanagan and keeper Danny Ward both played their last reds games as we lost 2-0 at Leicester City in the Third Round of the League Cup, thanks to second-half goals from Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani. Defensive debutants 1910 - Legendary full-back Ephraim Longworth made his reds bow in our 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United, with Joe Kitchen bagging two of his eight goals against the reds, including one from the spot. It was the first of his 370 reds appearances. Jack Parkinson suffered concussion when heading the ball, leaving the reds down to ten men. 1903 – Half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes and full-back James McLean both debuted as we lost 2-1 at Sunderland, with Jimmy Gemmell bagging a brace before Billy Dunlop nabbed our consolation. 1992 - Torben Piechnik made his reds debut as we lost 4-2 at Aston Villa, when Mark Walters and Ronnie Rosenthal were on target. However, the game is probably most widely remembered for Rosenthal’s shocking miss, as he hit the bar from a few yards out of an open goal. Ex-red Dean Saunders bagged a brace, two of his four strikes past the reds, with Dalian Atkinson scoring one of his four goals against us and Garry Parker also on target. 1981 - We also faced the Villains, being held to a goalless draw at Anfield with visiting keeper Jimmy Rimmer giving a virtuoso display as Phil Thompson played his 400th reds game. Tony off 1968 – Tony Hateley was sold to Coventry City after 28 strikes in 56 outings. He had arrived from Chelsea for a then club record £96,000 fee in June 1967. Dirk again 2009 - Dirk Kuyt scored in his third consecutive reds game as we won a League game 3-2 at West Ham United. Fernando Torres bagged a brace as we twice saw a lead cancelled out, by Alesssandro Diamanti and then Carlton Cole, before he finally secured victory by heading home from a cross by substitute Ryan Babel. Sub at the double 1972 - Phil Boersma struck twice in our 5-1 thumping of Carlisle United at Anfield in a League Cup Second Round replay, so becoming our first goalscoring substitute in the competition, having replaced John Toshack with the game still scoreless. Kevin Keegan, Chris Lawler and Steve Heighway also netted, with Tommy Smith having a penalty saved. Another record for the Kop 1989 - The Kop was recorded for use on “Kenny D, The Pride Of Liverpool” by the Liverpool FC 1989 Squad featuring Peter Howitt as we thumped struggling Third Division outfit Wigan Athletic 5-2 in a League Cup tie. Glenn Hysén headed us in front before a thunderous Bryan Griffiths free-kick levelled the match. David Thompson then sensationally put the visitors ahead on 55 minutes before Ian Rush grabbed a brace, with Peter Beardsley and John Barnes also netting, although he also had a penalty saved by keeper Nigel Adkins. This was Digger’s hundredth reds game. More derby disappointment We have faced our neighbours from across the park on four more occasions on this day in history, without securing a victory. 1936 - We lost 2-0 away, thanks to an Alex Stevenson goal and the last of Dixie Dean nineteen derby strikes. 1964 – We were thumped 4-0 at home in another top-flight meeting, with ex-red Johnny Morrissey, Derek Temple, Fred Pickering and Colin Harvey on target. Centre-half Alex Raisbeck played his 300th League game for the reds. 1959 - Louis Bimpson played his hundredth reds game in our 2-1 Second Division win at Derby County, thanks to goals from Alan A’Court and Roger Hunt, while Ronnie Moran played his 200th League game for the club. 1998 – Dominic Matteo reached a century of reds games as Charlton Athletic held us to a 3-3 draw at Anfield. Richard Rufus headed the visitors in front, before Robbie Fowler equalised from the spot. Clive Mendonca restored the Addicks’ lead with goals from Patrik Berger and Fowler again putting us ahead. However, Steve Jones nabbed a late leveller as the reds produced a nightmare defensive performance. A youthful hat-trick 2001 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle bagged a treble for France in their 5-1 defeat of Japan at the Under-17 World Championships in Tobago, with club-mate Anthony Le Tallec also in the team. The French therefore qualified for the knock-out phase, going on to win the tournament. 2007 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić was on target for Denmark Under-17’s as they beat the Ukraine 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Galway, with future reds centre-back Danny Wilson playing for Scotland as they were thumped 4-0 by Slovakia in another qualifier in Kirkcaldy.
