Crystal smashed 1989 - Eight outfield players scored, a League record, in our 9-0 humiliation of Crystal Palace at Anfield, still our joint best top-flight victory. John Aldridge came off the bench to score a penalty with his first kick, in his final reds game. Glenn Hysén struck the first of his seven reds goals in this game. For the record, our other scorers that day were John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Steve McMahon and Ian Rush, with Steve Nicol nabbing a brace. David Burrows, Alan Hansen, Ronnie Whelan and substitute Jan Mølby were the only outfield reds not on target. Geoff Thomas blew a golden chance to net for the visitors, missing a penalty. This was actually Kenny Dalglish’s hundredth League win as reds boss, in his 167th game. Alec off 1977 – Left-back Alec Lindsay left the club to sign for Stoke City, after a successful loan spell. He had signed from his hometown club Bury for £67,000 in March 1969 and netted eighteen times in 248 reds games, helping us to the League and UEFA Cup in 1973, and FA Cup and FA Charity Shield the following year. 1974 – Defender Dave Rylands moved on to Hereford United. He joined the reds in 1968, turning pro in March 1970, only making one senior reds appearance. Red trebles 2020 – Mohamed Salah struck a treble, including two penalties, as we opened our League campaign with a 4-3 victory over Leeds United behind closed doors at Anfield. Virgil van Dijk headed in the other goal as we led on four separate occasions. 2009 – Yossi Benayoun struck his third reds hat-trick, all in different competitions, as we thumped Burnley 4-0 at Anfield, with Dirk Kuyt also on target. The Israeli midfielder also had another strike wrongly chalked off for offside before nabbing his third. Happy birthdays 1957 - Steve Ogrizovic was born in Mansfield. He signed from Chesterfield for £70,000 in November 1977 but only made five senior appearances for the reds before joining Coventry City in August 1982, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1987, playing over 600 games. 1977 - David Thompson was born in Birkenhead. He turned professional in November 1994 and scored five times in 56 reds games before Gérard Houllier sold him for £3m to Coventry City in August 2000. 1980 - Former reserves winger Richie Partridge was born in Dublin. He only managed three first-team appearances for the reds, and is now a practising physiotherapist, recently working with the Academy’s Under-21’s and then the first team. 2004 – Centre-half Terence Miles was born in Liverpool. He turned pro in September 2021, having arrived at the Academy at Under-7’s level. He is the nephew of former reserves forward John Miles. Albert’s the one for me 1946 - Albert Stubbins signed from Newcastle United for a British record £13,000 fee after six strikes in thirty games. He was also tempted by being offered a well-paid part-time position as ‘Inspector of Canteens’ that involved testing the quality of tea served and chatting to dockers and other workers! He struck 83 times in 178 reds games, and won one League title, before becoming a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade. Digger off the mark 1987 - John Barnes scored his first senior reds goal as we beat Oxford United 2-0, with John Aldridge also on target against his old club, so netting in his fifth consecutive game. This was our first home game of the season, with future red Ray Houghton impressing for the visitors. Kenny back at Anfield 1993 - Kenny Dalglish won at Anfield as visiting Manager for the only time, thanks to a goal from scouse ex-reds reserve Mike Newell for Blackburn Rovers, the last of his eight strikes against the reds. Steve McManaman reached a century of reds appearances while Jan Mølby played his 200th League game for the club. 1908 - We also faced Rovers, losing 1-0 at Ewood Park, with keeper Sam Hardy reaching a century of League games for the reds. A European first 1972 - We played our first game in the new UEFA Cup, beating West Germans Eintracht Frankfurt, who were playing their first competitive fixture of the season. We won 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan and Emlyn Hughes. This was Bill Shankly’s fiftieth European game in charge of the reds. Two of our three other European games on this day also ended in victory. 1995 - We beat Russian outfit Spartak-Alania Vladikavkaz 2-1 in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign, Mirdzhalol Kasimov opened the scoring with Steve McManaman equalising before Jamie Redknapp struck a thirty-yard winner, with just 39 travelling reds present, all seated in the presidential box for their own safety! 1996 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye bagged the only goal of our European Cup Winners’ Cup opener at Finnish side Myllykosken Pallo-47. 2006 - We held PSV Eindhoven to a goalless draw in our opening UEFA Champions League group fixture in the Philips Stadion with Jamie Carragher appearing for the fiftieth time in the competition. Most recently 2021 – Mohamed Salah bagged his hundredth goal in Premier League football, including his time with Chelsea, to open the scoring at Leeds United. Fabinho netted after the break, before Pascal Struijk was dismissed for the home side following a challenge that left Harvey Elliott with a dislocated ankle. Sadio Mané struck in stoppage time to secure a 3-0 victory. 2015 – We lost 3-1 at Manchester United, with Divock Origi making his reds bow from the bench. Christian Benteke struck late on as we limped to defeat. Reporting in 2012 – The Hillsborough Independent Panel reported, shocking many people by revealing the extent of the establishment cover-up at the time of the disaster, its aftermath and ever since. It led to an unprecedented apology from Prime Minister David Cameron. Double debutants 2010 – Left-back Paul Konchesky and midfielder Raul Meireles both made their reds bows in our lifeless goalless draw at Birmingham City. Derby joy We have twice beaten Everton in Wartime league matches at Anfield on this day in history. 1942 - George Mills netted the only goal of the game. 1945 - Billy Liddell and Les Shannon were on the scoresheet as we won 2-1. A thumping win 1936 - We trounced Grimsby Town 7-1 in a First Division game at Anfield. Fred Howe and Vic Wright struck twice apiece, with Berry Nieuwenhuys, Jack Balmer and Matt Busby all also on target. Reds farewells 1931 - Harry Barkas played his fifth and final reds game as we lost 2-1 at Leicester City, with Gordon Gunson bagging our consolation. Ernie Hine struck one of his ten goals against the reds, with Sep Smith also on target. 1903 - Right-back Jack Chadburn played his second and last reds game as we lost 3-1 at home to The Wednesday, with forward Sydney Smith appearing for the second and final time. Jack Cox scored as Andrew Wilson struck two of his eight goals past us, with Harry Davis also on target. 1980 – Tommy Smith quit as youth team boss in order to concentrate on his business interests. Gunning for a draw We have twice drawn with Arsenal in First Division matches on this day in history. 1925 - Jimmy Walsh netted our goal at Highbury, with Charlie Buchan on target for the home side, to add to the eighteen strikes he had registered against the reds while with Sunderland. 1951 - The game at Anfield ended goalless. Mixed fortunes against the Hammers 1962 - We beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield thanks to an Ian St. John brace, with his second strike being the club’s 3,000th in top-flight football. Gerry Byrne played his hundredth reds game with Johnny Byrne on target for the visitors. 1998 - We lost 2-1 at Upton Park in a Premiership fixture, with Karl-Heinz Riedle nabbing our consolation after John Hartson and Eyal Berkovic had put the Irons ahead. Stevie out on loan 2002 - Young reserve Stephen Warnock joined Bradford City on loan. He played twelve times for the Bantams, scoring in a League defeat at Sheffield Wednesday. International debuts 1984 - Steve Nicol made his Scotland debut in their 6-1 defeat of Yugoslavia at Hampden Park, as John Wark won his 29th and final cap. Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Graeme Souness were both on the scoresheet. On the same day, Jan Mølby won his first cap as a reds player, and ninth in total, as Denmark beat Austria 3-1 in a friendly in Copenhagen. Mark Lawrenson, Michael Robinson, Ronnie Whelan, ex-red Joey Jones and future reds John Barnes, Glenn Hysén and Mark Wright all also featured in internationals that day. 1990 - Future red Gary McAllister won his first cap as a Leeds United player as Scotland beat Romania 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Hampden Park. John Barnes, Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton, Ronnie Whelan and future reds István Kozma, Jari Litmanen and Mark Wright all also played for their countries that day. 1932 – Future reds forward Sam English won the first of his two caps for Northern Ireland as they lost 4-0 to Scotland in Belfast in the British International Championships, with reds keeper Elisha Scott also in the side. On target for their countries 2007 - Fernando Torres bagged his first goal as a red as Spain beat Latvia 2-0 in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Oviedo. Future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos netted a brace, his last goals while with Eintracht Frankfurt, with John Arne Riise also on target as Norway were held to a 2-2 draw by Greece in Oslo, with ex-red Frode Kippe also in the home side. Ex-red Michael Owen struck twice as England beat Russia 3-0 in another qualifier, with Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Stewart Downing and ex-red Emile Heskey also featuring. Craig Bellamy bagged a brace while winning his first cap for Wales as a West Ham United player, as they won a Euro 2008 qualifier 5-2 in Slovakia, with John Toshack in charge. Andriy Voronin faced future red Alberto Aquilani, while Roy Hodgson managed a Finland side that included Sami Hyypiä and ex-red Daniel Sjölund as they were held to a goalless draw by Poland in Helsinki. Luis Suárez won his first cap as an Ajax player as Uruguay drew a friendly 0-0 in South Africa. On the same day, ex-red Xherdan Shaqiri struck from the spot as Switzetrland beat Andorra 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Sion. Sadio Mané won his first cap as an Al Nassr player in Senegal’s 1-0 friendly defeat by Algeria in Dakar, with ex-red Ki-Jana Hoever playing for the Dutch Under-21’s for the sixth and last time as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in North Macedonia. Luis Díaz, Ben Doak, Wataru Endō, Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Núñez, Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, future red Giorgi Mamardashvili and ex-red Emre Can were all also in international action as Steve Clarke, Bernard Diomède and Rigobert Song all took charge of their countries. Also on the move 1998 - Ex-red Steve Nicol signed for Doncaster Rovers. He played 25 League games for them. 2008 - Robbie Fowler signed for Blackburn Rovers. He failed to score in six games as they struggled for form. On the same day, Steve Clarke resigned from Chelsea’s coaching staff, prior to joining West Ham United as First Team Coach three days later. 2009 – Reserves forward Michael Ngoo joined the reds from Southend United for a fee of up to £250,000. He was released in May 2014 without having reached the first team. 2012 – Head of Scouting Dave Fallows and Chief Scout Barry Hunter both started work. Meanwhile, left-back Grégory Vignal signed for Dundee United, but left two months later without having made a first-team appearance. 2017 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of his boyhood club Crystal Palace for the first time, leading them to 54 victories in 162 games in charge before leaving in May 2021. 2019 – Right-back Connor Randall signed for Bulgarian top-flight side Arda 1924 Kardzhali after eight senior appearances for the reds. 2022 – Keeper Loris Karius signed for Newcastle United, with his only appearance in his first campaign coming in the League Cup Final at Wembley. He joined the reds for £4.7m from 1. FSV Mainz 05 in July 2016, taking over the number one shirt. He made 49 first-team appearances, keeping 22 clean sheets but making several high-profile errors. Mixed fortunes against the Rams 1973 – Derby County beat us 3-1 at the Baseball Ground. Roger Davies bagged one of his five goals against the reds with Kevin Hector netting one of his four. Phil Boersma scored our goal, with Roy McFarland also on target for the home side. 1896 – Jimmy Methven put through his own net with Harry Bradshaw also netting as we beat Derby County 2-0 at Anfield, after Jack Robinson had saved a penalty from George Allan. Other reds games 1984 – Paul Walsh netted as we drew 1-1 at Manchester United. 1981 – We won 2-1 at Coventry City with Alan Kennedy bagging a rapid equaliser after we had fallen behind to a Gerry Daly goal in the first minute. Terry McDermott scored the winner from the spot as Bob Paisley reached 300 League games as reds boss. 1979 – Norwich City held us to a goalless draw at Anfield in Bob Paisley’s 300th game in charge in all competitions. 1973 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in L4. Martin Peters opened the scoring with one of his fourteen goals against the reds, before Chris Lawler equalised. Martin Chivers nabbed one of his seven goals past us. Pat Jennings saved a penalty from Emlyn Hughes but was judged to have left his line too early. Alec Lindsay converted the subsequent retake, with Chris Lawler netting the last-minute winner. 1956 – Dicky Robinson scored an own goal as we drew a Second Division encounter 1-1 at Middlesbrough, with Brian Clough bagging the first of his ten goals past us. 1923 – We lost 2-0 at Burnley. For the Dons 2004 - A match was staged between Wimbledon Old Boys and Liverpool Old Boys in aid of the AFC Wimbledon stadium fund. The game ended all square with the reds goal coming poetically from a John Aldridge penalty.-

Central moves 2014 – Daniel Agger joined Brøndby IF in his native Denmark for a reported £3m, after fourteen goals in 232 games since signing from the same club for £5.8m in January 2006. He had helped us to claim the FA Community Shield and League Cup. 2011 – Uruguayan Sebastián Coates signed from Nacional for £7m after impressing at the recent Copa América tournament. He netted twice in 24 senior outings for the reds, failing to break through to becoming a first team regular. He was sold to Sunderland for £4m in July 2015 after spending the previous season on loan there. 1960 – Right-half Gordon Milne signed from his hometown club Preston North End for a club record £16,000. He played 282 times for us, netting eighteen times and winning the League title twice, as well as the Second Division championship before joining Blackpool in May 1967. He also won fourteen England caps, and later successfully managed Coventry City and Leicester City. Masch off 2010 - Javier Mascherano was sold to Barcelona for €22m, after two goals in 139 reds games. He signed for the reds on loan from West Ham United in January 2007, joining permanently thirteen months later. A hat-trick for Michael 1998 - Michael Owen bagged a hat-trick as we beat Newcastle United 4-1 at St. James’ Park, to spoil Ruud Gullit’s first game in charge. Stéphane Guivarc’h replied for the home side with Patrik Berger rounding out the scoring, which all took place in the first half. The Saint off the mark 1961 – Ian St. John struck his first two reds goals as we trounced Sunderland 4-1, with Roger Hunt also on target twice and Brian Clough netting the last of his ten goals past us. 1958 – We were beaten 2-1, when Billy Liddell grabbed our consolation at Roker Park. 1922 - We also lost 1-0 on another visit to the North East. Carra’s half century 2012 - Jamie Carragher played his fiftieth game in Europe’s second tier competition as Heart Of Midlothian held us to a 1-1 draw in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League play-off at Anfield. David Templeton’s strike that evaded Pepe Reina with just six minutes remaining looked to have secured extra time, but Luis Suárez scored to send us through. 1980 – Left-back Alan Kennedy reached a century of reds appearances, also scoring in our 4-1 defeat of Norwich City at Anfield with Alan Hansen, Terry McDermott and David Johnson also on target. Loaned out 2012 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll joined West Ham United on loan after bagging eleven goals in 58 reds games since his club record £35m capture on transfer deadline day in January 2011. He netted seven times in 24 games for the Irons, before signing on permanently for £15.5m in June 2013, their record fee paid to date. On the same day, young forward Samed Yeşil moved to Anfield from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a reported £1m. He made two senior reds appearances before being released in June 2016. Meanwhile, ex-red Ryan Babel was released by TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, later re-joining Ajax. 2015 – Forward Lazar Marković joined Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü on loan, netting twice in twenty outings. Also off and running 2003 - Harry Kewell netted his first reds goal as we won 3-0 at Everton, with Michael Owen bagging a brace. This was our fourth straight League win at Goodison, a record for any club. 1948 – Les Shannon struck his only reds goal as we won 2-1 at Sheffield United, with Billy Liddell also on target. Out of Anfield 2002 - Jari Litmanen rejoined his old club Ajax on a free transfer. He had only managed to make nineteen starts in as many months at Anfield, notching nine goals in 43 appearances in all, and failed to really establish himself back in the Netherlands. 2006 - Neil Mellor joined Preston North End for a reported £0.5m. He netted 43 times in 151 outings before having to retire due to injury in May 2012. 1999 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme signed for Saint-Étienne on a free transfer. He had made 54 reds appearances but was not the defensive missing link we were searching for. He spent two seasons in France before joining Sander Westerveld at Real Sociedad, retiring from the game in June 2008 after a spell back with his first club, Rosenborg BK. 1990 - Reserves defender Alex Watson joined Derby County on loan, going on to make five appearances for the Rams. His brother Dave, another ex-reds reserve, went on to far greater success with Everton. 1911 – Forward Herbert Leavey left the reds to join Barnsley after just five senior games since arriving from Plymouth Argyle in June 1910. Also off the mark 1919 – George Patterson took charge of the reds for the first time as inside-forward Harry Lewis, Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and outside-left Albert Pearson all scored on their reds debuts, as we won 3-1 at Bradford City as another season began, with Jimmy Marshall nabbing one of his five goals against the reds. Lewis also missed a penalty, while full-back William Jenkinson also made his reds bow with forward Billy Lacey playing his hundredth League game for the club. 1933 - Forward Sam English scored his first reds goal in our 1-1 draw with Stoke City at Anfield, the first time we had faced them since their name change from the simpler Stoke. Tommy Sale struck the first of his five goals past us that day. We have beaten Stoke City twice more on this day over the years. 1947 - Billy Liddell struck a brace as we won 2-0 at the Victoria Ground. 1952 - We won 3-2 in L4 with Jack Smith, Kevin Baron and Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. Frank Bowyer struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Les Johnston also netting. Happy birthdays 1986 - Winger Sebastián Leto was born in Alejandro Korn in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He signed from Club Atlético Lanús for £1.85m in January 2007, although the transfer was not formally completed until seven months later. He made just four senior appearances and moved permanently to Panathinaikos in July 2009 after spending the previous season on loan at Olympiacos. 2002 – Portuguese forward Fábio Carvalho was born in Torres Vedras. He signed from Fulham for an initial £5m in July 2022, debuting as we won the FA Community Shield later that month and scoring a total of three times in 21 games in his first season with the reds, spending the second out on loan at first RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V., then Hull City. Out-foxed We twice visited Filbert Street to play Leicester City on this day in the 1970’s, without winning. 1972 - We lost 3-2 with John Toshack bagging an early brace to put us two goals ahead, before Keith Weller struck a hat-trick, the first of his six goals against the reds. 1975 - We were held 1-1, with Kevin Keegan nabbing our goal. Two minutes earlier he had converted a penalty, but had to retake it, and failed with his second attempt. Keith Weller netted against the reds again, the last of his six strikes against us. Losing out to the Villains We twice faced Aston Villa on this day in the 1920’s, without winning. 1924 - Donald McKinlay and Danny Shone netted as we lost 4-2 at Anfield in our opening match of the season. Billy Walker struck two of his five goals against the reds, with Billy Kirton and Arthur Dorrell also on target. 1926 - Dick Forshaw was on target as we drew 1-1 at Villa Park, with Len Capewell scoring one of his six strikes past us. Heading towards Wembley 1977 - Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Case were on the scoresheet as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield in a League Cup Second Round fixture. We went on to reach the Final of the competition for the first time that season. East end Hutch 1994 - Don Hutchison left Anfield for West Ham United for £1.5m after ten goals in sixty reds games. 2001 - He moved back to Upton Park, joining from Sunderland for £5m, having also played for Sheffield United and Everton in the meantime. Starting off well 1930 - Jim Smith netted twice as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Anfield in our opening fixture of the season, with outside-left Fred Hopkin playing his 300th League game for the reds. Jack Bruton scored one of his four goals past us. Beaten to a trophy 1989 - The reds lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the eleventh Trofeo Internacional “Santiago Bernabéu”, thanks to goals from Hugo Sánchez and Emilio Butragueño. Other reds games 1995 – Neil Ruddock netted the only goal of Queens Park Rangers’ visit to Anfield. 1986 – We beat Arsenal 2-1 in L4. Jan Mølby converted a penalty before Tony Adams equalised. Ian Rush grabbed the winner. 1969 – Chris Lawler headed in as we drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday. 1966 – We beat Manchester City 3-2 at home with Roger Hunt and Geoff Strong both scoring early on. Matt Gray pulled a goal back after the break with Hunt netting again before Jimmy Murray bagging the last of his four goals against the reds. 1950 – We lost 1-0 at Manchester United. A Gray day 1910 - 1930’s defender Alf Gray was born in Westhoughton, Bolton. He failed to break into our first team. On the move 2005 – Brazilian keeper Alexander Doni joined Roma from Juventude in his native land for US$18,000. 2003 - Steve McManaman signed for Manchester City from Real Madrid on a free transfer. He appeared just 44 times for them without scoring before being released. 2002 - Øyvind Leonhardsen joined Aston Villa from Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. He left Villa Park two years later, after three goals in 23 games. 1997 - Reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed from Sydney Olympic. He never made our first team, and is currently back in his homeland, running a soccer school. 2006 – Future reds scout Jonathan Woodgate joined Middlesbrough on loan from Real Madrid, making the move permanent for £7m the following summer. He played 52 times without scoring, moving on to Tottenham Hotspur for a reported £8m in January 2008. 2018 – Keeper Caoimhin Kelleher and winger Sheyi Ojo both signed new contracts, with Ojo then completing a loan move to Stade de Reims on the same day, where he scored once in eighteen games for their first team. 2021 – Left-back James Norris signed a new contract with the reds, having already made one senior appearance. On the same day, centre-half Ozan Kabak joined Norwich City on loan from Schalke 04, playing twelve times as they were relegated from the Premier League. 2022 - Dutch centre-half Sepp van den Berg penned a new deal, also joining Schalke 04 on loan on the same day, scoring once in nine games while in Germany. First caps 1996 - Brad Friedel won his first cap as a Columbus Crew player, and fortieth in total, as the USA beat El Salvador 3-1 in a friendly in Los Angeles. 2006 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses played for England Under-17’s for the first time, in their 2-2 friendly draw with Turkey. On the same day, future red Alex Manninger played for Austria Under-21’s in their 4-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Scotland in Amstetten. Also in international action 2015 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they lost a friendly 7-3 to Portugal in Burton, with Adam Lewis playing. 2016 - Ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-18’s as they lost 2-0 to Switzerland in a friendly in Meyrin. -
Defensive recruits 2015 – Centre-half Joe Gomez signed from Charlton Athletic for £3.5m. He has made 224 senior appearances up to the end of the 2023/24 season without scoring, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup. 2001 - John Arne Riise signed from AS Monaco for £4m. He netted 31 times in his 348 first-team appearances, at either left-back or on the left side of midfield but left for Roma for the same fee he was signed for in June 2008. The birth of LFC 1892 - Club founder John Houlding signed the Certificate of Change of Name to alter the name of the club residing at Anfield from Everton Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited to Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited. We started out in the Lancashire League that September, soon rising through the divisions and heading towards glory. Hola y adiós Rafa 2010 - Rafael Benítez left the club as boss by mutual consent. He had been in charge for six years, leading us to the European Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield during his six seasons in charge as we won 194 of his 350 games as Manager. 2015 - He was appointed Manager of Real Madrid, leading them to seventeen wins in 25 victories but remaining in charge for only seven months. More red farewells 2012 – Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt was sold to Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü for €1m. He had arrived from Feyenoord for £9m in August 2006, with then Chairman David Moores having to lend the club the money for the transfer. He proved a willing worker, notching 71 times in 285 outings, including our consolation in the Champions League Final in Athens in 2007 and five derby strikes. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. 1919 - James Scott left the reds to sign for Dumbarton back in his native Scotland, having made just ten senior reds appearances since signing from Ardeer Thistle in 1910. Winning the cup 1992 - We beat Second Division Sunderland 2-0 to win our fifth FA Cup. Ian Rush scored his fifth FA Cup Final goal, to break Stan Mortensen’s record, after Michael Thomas had opened the scoring, with Dean Saunders also hitting the bar. Graeme Souness led the team out just 48 hours after leaving hospital. However, the wrong medals were presented to each team, and so the two sides had to swap them afterwards! Ray Houghton was playing his 202nd and final reds game. Youngest ever 2010 - Left-back Jack Robinson became the reds’ youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 250 days as we were held to a goalless draw at Hull City. This was Rafael Benítez’s last game in charge, and Dirk Kuyt’s 200th game for the club, while Nabil El Zhar made his 32nd and final reds appearance. 1995 – Steven Gerrard represented the reds for the first time ever, aged fourteen, as the ‘B’ team lost 2-1 at Manchester United, with the team including many winners of the FA Youth Cup a year later. Maxi’s treble 2011 - We secured our biggest every victory at Fulham, winning 5-2 after a sparkling performance. The dream is over 2014 - Joe Allen scored a club record 59th first-half goal in a season at Crystal Palace, with Damien Delaney putting through his own net after the break. Two minutes later, Luis Suárez scored his 82nd and final reds goal, a club record fourteenth away goal of the season and joint all-Premier League record 31st goal in a campaign as we took a three-goal lead, reaching a new club record of 48 away League goals. He joined the Anfield coaching staff in 1958, becoming Assistant Manager to Bob Paisley in 1974, before moving into the hot seat himself nine years later. In his first season as boss, he led the club to a unique treble of League, European Cup and League Cup, retiring just a year later after 71 victories in 131 games in all competitions. Welcome to Brucie 1981 - Bruce Grobbelaar signed for £250,000 from Vancouver Whitecaps. Our eccentric keeper played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups, three FA Charity Shields and Screen Sport Super Cup. Other reds birthdays 1902 – Scottish centre-forward Jimmy Smith was born in Old Kilpatrick. He still holds the British seasonal scoring record, netting 66 for Ayr United in 1927/28. He signed for the reds from Ayr for £5,500 in September 1929, going on to bag 38 goals in 62 reds games including two on his debut against Manchester United. He moved into amateur football with Tunbridge Wells Rangers in June 1932. 1897 - John Miller was born in Motherwell. He only played eight times while at Anfield before moving on to Aberdeen in June 1921. He was Tom’s brother, who was caught up in the 1915 match fixing scandal. 1922 – Full-back Frank Lock was born in London. He signed from Charlton Athletic for £7,500 on Christmas Day 1953, playing 42 times before moving on to Watford in June 1955. 1926 – Centre-forward Les Shannon was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in December 1951 and netted 22 times in 76 games before joining Barnsley in July 1957. Luis Díaz bravely headed in the opener as he was flattened by Seagulls’ keeper Robert Sánchez, with Mohamed Salah converting a second-half penalty. 2017 - We beat Burnley 2-1, with Ashley Barnes putting the visitors in front before goals from Gini Wijnaldum and Emre Can. Double capture 1930 - Outside-left Gordon Gunson and forward Dave Wright both signed from Sunderland for a combined £4,800. Gunson made 87 appearances, scoring an impressive 26 times in his injury-affected time at Anfield before moving on to Swindon Town in June 1934. Nando at the treble 2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick to pass twenty goals for the season after we had fallen behind against Middlesbrough at Anfield. We went on to win 3-2, with Jérémie Aliadière sent off for the visitors for slapping Javier Mascherano. This meant we became the first team ever to score hat-tricks in all of the League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League in the same season. Daniel again 2014 - Daniel Sturridge scored in his seventh consecutive League game as we eventually beat Swansea City 4-3 at Anfield. Trent’s century 2019 – Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold reached a century of reds games as we left it late to win 2-1 at Aston Villa. Trézéguet put the home side in front after twenty minutes. Andy Robertson headed in a late leveller, before Sadio Mané nodded in injury time to maintain our six-point lead at the top of the table. 300 for the reds 2003 - We beat Fulham 2-1 at Loftus Road. Ex-Cottager Steve Finnan set Emile Heskey up for the opener, our 300th away goal in the Premier League, before Louis Saha equalised. Our winner came when Danny Murphy netted his fiftieth career League goal, converting from the spot after Florent Sinama-Pongolle was brought down in the area, shortly after he had been assaulted by Luis Boa Morte in the centre circle, who was dismissed. European Cup games We have played in the European Cup three times on this day over the years. 1977 - We lost 2-1 at Dynamo Dresden but still progressed to the Second Round 6-3 on aggregate, with Steve Heighway on target. 1982 - We beat Finnish champions HJK Helsinki 5-0 at Anfield to wipe out a single-goal first-leg defeat to reach the Third Round. Kenny Dalglish, Craig Johnston and Phil Neal all netted in the first half, with Alan Kennedy adding a brace after the break. 1983 - We won 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao at the same stage, thanks to an Ian Rush header, following a goalless first leg at Anfield. A Manchester treble 1895 - Jack Peters scored a hat-trick for Newton Heath, later to become Manchester United, as they beat us 5-2 at Bank Street, with John Clarkin and Dick Smith also scoring for the home side. Frank Becton and Jimmy Ross were on target for the reds as keeper John Whitehead made his third and final reds appearance. Disappointment against the Gunners 1988 – We were held to a 1-1 draw in a League Cup Third Round tie at Anfield. John Barnes netted, with the reds eventually progressing after a second replay, before being knocked out at West Ham United at the next hurdle. 2013 – We lost 2-0 in a League game at the Emirates Stadium, with Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey on target either side of the break. Red arrivals 1944 – Bootle-born right-winger Jimmy Payne turned pro with the reds. He notched 43 times in 243 appearances for the reds, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, before moving across Stanley Park in April 1956, where he was dogged by injury before retiring to become a newsagent. 1894 - Northern Irish inside-left Davy Hannah signed from Sunderland. He was the cousin of Andrew Hannah, a Scottish right-back who left Anfield for Rob Roy soon afterwards. Davy struck twelve times in 33 reds games. 1879 – Inside-forward Fred Buck was born in Audley, Staffordshire. He arrived from West Bromwich Albion in May 1903, scoring once in thirteen senior outings before joining Plymouth Argyle in April 1904. 1885 – Left-back Tom Rogers was born in Prescot. He signed from Rossendale United in April 1907, playing forty times without scoring in five years with the reds. Wadsworth passes on 1975 - Outside-right Harold Wadsworth died. He signed as an amateur from Tranmere Rovers in January 1918, turning pro in May 1919. He struck three times in 55 reds games, often featuring alongside his brother, centre-half Walter. He moved on to Leicester City for £250 in June 1924. Red farewells 1907 – Harold Fitzpatrick played his fourth and last reds game in our 2-0 top-flight defeat at Bristol City. He moved on to Chesterfield Town the following year. Sam Gilligan netted one of his five goals past his future employers, with Jack Wedlock also on target. 1929 – Centre-half David Davidson bagged his second and final reds goal as we drew 3-3 at Portsmouth in a top-flight fixture. Gordon Hodgson and Jimmy Smith were also on target. Jimmy Easson bagged the first of his eight goals past the reds, with Jack Weddle nabbing the first of his five past us, and Fred Cook also on the scoresheet. 1924 – Future reds Gordon Hodgson and Arthur Riley both won their second and last caps for South Africa as they lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in Amsterdam. 1957 – Forward John Evans played his 107th and last reds game after Jimmy Melia failed a late fitness test. Half-back Johnny Wheeler bagged the only goal of our Second Division fixture at Lincoln City in just the second minute. 1991 – Swedish centre-half Glenn Hysén gave us a half-time lead as we lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace with his third and last reds goal, the Eagles’ only League win at Anfield to date. Mixed fortunes against the Foxes We have twice entertained Leicester City in the First Division on this day in history. 1963 – We lost 1-0. 1985 - Ian Rush grabbed the only goal of the game late on to hand us victory. Thumping Anfield wins 1912 - Jack Parkinson netted a brace as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-1. Donald McKinlay had opened the scoring in the first minute with the first of his 35 reds goals, with Arthur Goddard completing the scoring. Billy Minter’s consolation was one of his five strikes against the reds. 1940 - We beat Stockport County 5-0 in a Wartime League fixture with Bob Paisley, Arnold Grundy and Berry Nieuwenhuys on the scoresheet, to add to a George Hunt brace. On the move 1959 – Blues centre-forward Dave Hickson revealed that he would welcome a move across the park if the reds were to pursue their alleged interest. He signed four days later for £12,000 and went on to score 38 times in 67 reds games, having grabbed 95 goals in 225 League games in his two spells with the Blues before moving to Anfield. 1949 - Liverpool-born centre-forward Les Shannon was sold to Burnley. He signed professional terms in November 1944 but had to wait until April 1948 to make his reds bow. He bagged just one goal in eleven games, as well as six in fifteen wartime appearances. He is the father of recent Under-16’s coach Dave Shannon. 2015 – Ex-reds defender Richard Money was sacked as Manager of Cambridge United. He had been in charge since October 2012, leading them to the FA Trophy and back into the Football League. 2006 – Future reds keeper Andy Lonergan joined Swindon Town on loan from Preston North End, playing just once for the Robins. 1899 – Inside-left Bill White signed for Queens Park Rangers from West Calder Swifts, netting eight times in 39 games for the R’s. He went on to score within two minutes of his reds debut at home to Everton in September 1901. This was his only strike in six senior games, and he moved on to Dundee in July 1902. Happy birthdays 1994 – Ex-reserves midfielder Jordan Lussey was born in Ormskirk. He was released in June 2015, signing on with Bolton Wanderers the following month after a successful loan spell. 1982 - Former reserves keeper Charles Itandje was born in Bobigny. The Frenchman signed from Racing Club de Lens in August 2007 and played seven largely unconvincing games in his first season, being released from his contract in December 2010. Jayden’s bow 2021 – Jayden Danns made his debut for England Under-16’s in their 1-0 friendly defeat of Italy in France. Jonjo again 2007 – Future red Jonjo Shelvey captained England Under-16’s in the Sky Sports Victory Shield, scoring as they beat Wales 2-0 in Telford. He actually struck in all three games as England claimed the trophy. 2023 – Future red Rio Ngumoha scored the winning penalty as England Under-16’s beat France 4-1 in a shoot-out after their friendly had ended 1-1 in Le Plessis-Trévise. Also in international action 2021 – Future red Ben Doak featured for Scotland Under-17’s as they lost 3-0 to Italy in a European Championships qualifier in Northern Ireland. 2000 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to FR Yugoslavia. He signed from Home Farm for £35,000 in September 1979 and played 493 times in his fifteen years with the reds, netting 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields before joining Southend United for free in September 1994. 1920 - Right-back Bill Shepherd was born in Liverpool. He signed from Elm Park in December 1945 and made 58 reds appearances, with his brothers centre-forward Arthur and Joe Shepherd also appearing for the reds after the war. Bill left Anfield in 1952 to join Wigan Athletic. 1930 – Right-back Bert Childs was born in Liverpool. He only made two senior appearances in September 1953 after arriving from amateur side Northern Nomads earlier that year. He left the club in 1954 to return to amateur football with Bishop Auckland. Other than that, I kept him pretty quiet.” 2013 – We lost 1-0 at Manchester United as a record attendance of 65,701 saw the reds in a non-Final League Cup tie. Javier Hernández grabbed the only goal of the game. Youngest ever 2019 – We won 2-0 at Milton Keynes Dons in the Carabao Cup Third Round, with Harvey Elliott hitting the bar twice as he became the youngest player to ever start a reds match, at just sixteen years and 174 days. James Milner opened the scoring in the first half, with defender Ki-Jana Hoever bagging his only reds goal after the break. Facing the Black Cats 2010 - We drew 2-2 with Sunderland at Anfield, with Dirk Kuyt opening the scoring after the referee ruled that the visitors had taken a free-kick when gifting the ball to the reds, despite vehement protests. Darren Bent’s brace, including one from the spot, put them ahead before Steven Gerrard headed in an equaliser. These are the most recent of his five strikes against the reds. Held by the Mancs 1971 – Bobby Graham and Brian Hall put us two goals ahead against Manchester United at Anfield before Denis Law and Bobby Charlton struck in the second half, the last of their six and four goals against us, respectively. Graham had a second goal ruled out late on for offside as the game ended 2-2. International bows 1996 - Future red Milan Baroš won his first international cap for the Czech Republic, at Under-15’s level, as they drew 1-1 in a friendly in Austria. 2002 - Robbie Foy won his first cap at Under-19’s level in Scotland’s 2-1 friendly win over Switzerland in Dumbarton. On the same day, future red Alberto Aquilani played in Italy’s 2-1 defeat of Slovenia at the same level, while Roy Hodgson took charge of the senior United Arab Emirates side as they lost a friendly 2-1 in Oman. Departing 2006 - Nigel Spackman was sacked as Manager of Millwall after just four months in charge. On the same day, Alan A’Court scored his first Under-23’s goal as England beat Bulgaria 6-2 in a friendly at Stamford Bridge. 1943 - Future reds boss Don Welsh bagged a treble in a Wartime international, as England thrashed Wales 8-3 at Wembley. Ray Lambert and ex-red Cyril Sidlow both featured for the Welsh. Also in international action 1985 – Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they drew a World Cup qualifier 2-2 with West Germany in Solna. On the same day, Jan Mølby appeared as Denmark lost a qualifier 1-0 to the USSR in Moscow. 1988 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil beat Argentina 1-0 in their Olympics Quarter-final in South Korea. 1991 – Øyvind Leonhardsen turned out for Norway as they lost a friendly 3-2 to Czechoslovakia in Oslo. Happy birthdays 1937 - Utility player Geoff Strong was born in Kirkheaton, Northumberland. He made 201 reds appearances after moving from Arsenal in November 1964 for a club record £40,000, netting 33 times and winning a League title medal and the FA Charity Shield the year after helping us to our first ever FA Cup triumph. He left the reds to join Coventry City for £29,500 in August 1970. Sadly, he died in June 2013 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. 2005 – Forward Lewis Koumas was born in Chester. He arrived as a midfielder from Tranmere Rovers at Under-11’s level, signing pro terms in January 2023. He scored while making his senior bow as we beat Southampton 3-0 in an FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Anfield in February 2024. 1940 - Winger Kevin Lewis was born in Ellesmere Port. He played 82 games in his three years at Anfield after signing from Sheffield United for a club record £13,000 in June 1960 as Bill Shankly’s second capture, helping us to the Second Division title and scoring an impressive 44 times. He returned to Yorkshire in August 1963 to join Huddersfield Town. 1929 - Forward Tony Rowley was born in Porthcawl. He bagged a treble on his debut after signing from Stourbridge in October 1953, going on to net 38 times in 61 reds games. He moved to Third Division Tranmere Rovers in March 1958, continuing to score at a rate of one goal every other game. For Cally 1977 - A testimonial match for Ian Callaghan was staged at Anfield against Bill Shankly’s Lancashire XI. Cally scored in the reds’ 4-2 defeat, with our other score coming from an own goal. 1955 – A benefit match for left-back Eddie Spicer was held in front of 41,266 at Anfield, with a ‘Liverton’ side facing a Lancashire XI that included Bert Trautmann, Stanley Matthews and Don Revie. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving with the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to score twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title as well as playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg had ended his career in December 1953. Signing on 2020 - Diogo Jota signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £41m, with Ki-Jana Hoever moving in the opposite direction for an initial £9m after one goal in four senior games. Jota scored 56 times in 145 appearances in his first four seasons at Anfield, helping us to claim the FA Cup and League Cup. On the same day, forward Taiwo Awoniyi joined Union Berlin on loan, scoring five times in 22 games that season. 2023 – Young Scottish winger Ben Doak signed a new contract, By the end of that season, he had played ten senior reds games. Hat-tricks 2010 – Dimitar Berbatov grabbed three of his five goals to date past us as we lost 3-2 at Manchester United. Steven Gerrard struck both our goals as we came from two goals behind, a free-kick and then one from the spot, but the home side struck a late winner. 1925 - Dick Forshaw bagged a treble in our 5-0 thumping of Manchester United at Anfield, with Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and outside-right Archie Rawlings nabbing his tenth and last reds goal. He struck eight reds hat-tricks in all, including one against Everton a week later, and another against United eleven months later. 1931 - Legendary blue Dixie Dean bagged a treble as Everton beat the reds 3-1, three of his nineteen derby strikes, with centre-forward Dave Wright netting our consolation. 1953 - Louis Bimpson grabbed all four goals of our game against Burnley at Anfield to record our hundredth competitive hat-trick. Right-back Bert Childs played the first of just two reds games while Billy Liddell reached 300 outings for the club. European records 1967 - We played our first ever game in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, winning 2-0 at Swedes Malmö FF, thanks to a brace of headers from Tony Hateley. 1973 - Only 7,000 turned up for the opening game of our European Cup campaign at the Stade de la Frontière, the lowest attendance of any reds game in Europe, home or away, with some sources stating the gate to be as low as 5,000. Brian Hall opened the scoring, but we could only draw 1-1 with Luxembourg’s Jeunesse D’Esch with Gilbert Dussier nabbing a late equaliser. Last outings 2017 – Right-back Jon Flanagan and keeper Danny Ward both played their last reds games as we lost 2-0 at Leicester City in the Third Round of the League Cup, thanks to second-half goals from Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani. Defensive debutants 1910 - Legendary full-back Ephraim Longworth made his reds bow in our 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United, with Joe Kitchen bagging two of his eight goals against the reds, including one from the spot. It was the first of his 370 reds appearances. Jack Parkinson suffered concussion when heading the ball, leaving the reds down to ten men. 1903 – Half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes and full-back James McLean both debuted as we lost 2-1 at Sunderland, with Jimmy Gemmell bagging a brace before Billy Dunlop nabbed our consolation. 1992 - Torben Piechnik made his reds debut as we lost 4-2 at Aston Villa, when Mark Walters and Ronnie Rosenthal were on target. However, the game is probably most widely remembered for Rosenthal’s shocking miss, as he hit the bar from a few yards out of an open goal. Ex-red Dean Saunders bagged a brace, two of his four strikes past the reds, with Dalian Atkinson scoring one of his four goals against us and Garry Parker also on target. 1981 - We also faced the Villains, being held to a goalless draw at Anfield with visiting keeper Jimmy Rimmer giving a virtuoso display as Phil Thompson played his 400th reds game. Tony off 1968 – Tony Hateley was sold to Coventry City after 28 strikes in 56 outings. He had arrived from Chelsea for a then club record £96,000 fee in June 1967. Dirk again 2009 - Dirk Kuyt scored in his third consecutive reds game as we won a League game 3-2 at West Ham United. Liddell signs on 1939 - Billy Liddell signed as a professional at Anfield. He went on to strike 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1957 – Keeper Tommy ‘The Flying Pig’ Lawrence signed for the reds as an amateur, turning professional in October 1957. He played 390 times for us, winning two League title medals and an FA Charity Shield as well as being a member of the 1965 FA Cup winning side. He left the club in November 1971 to join Tranmere Rovers. He only made six senior appearances after signing on in July 1934, having left Birmingham. He moved on to Southend United in April 1936. 1990 – Former reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević was born in Pristina, Kosova, although he grew up in Sweden. A win in the fizzy cup 1995 - Steve McManaman was the star of the show as we won our sixth League Cup, when it was known as the Coca Cola Cup, by defeating First Division Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at Wembley. Macca got both our goals, with Alan Thompson grabbing a late consolation for the Trotters. Future red Jason McAteer was on the losing side that day, while John Barnes was playing his 300th reds game. 2005 - We defeated Bolton again, with Igor Bišcan heading the only goal of the game at Anfield late on from a Djimi Traoré cross, his third and final reds goal. 1926 - We also beat Wanderers, with Harry Chambers grabbing the only goal of our First Division meeting late on at Burnden Park. Match-fixing shame 1915 - We visited Old Trafford on this Good Friday for a First Division match with Manchester United, who were struggling against relegation, while we were comfortable in mid-table. The game ended in a 2-0 United win with George Anderson bagging a brace, the last of his four goals against us. Reds left-winger Jackie Sheldon and United’s Pat O’Connell both missed penalties, with full-back Bob Purcell handballing to give away United’s missed penalty. Seven players were later suspended for fixing this match, including four reds. Sheldon was a former United player, while centre-forward Tom Miller later moved to Old Trafford. Len Phillips struck after the break, with Albert Stubbins and Bob Paisley both on the scoresheet for the reds. 1938 – We won 2-1 at Huddersfield Town thanks to goals from Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer. 1932 – Gordon Gunson struck the only goal of our visit to Manchester City. 1920 – We drew 1-1 at Oldham Athletic. George Wall converted a penalty, the last of his ten goals past us, before Tom Miller equalised. 1904 – We lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough. On the move 2012 – Ex-reserves midfielder Jim Magilton left as Manager of Melbourne Victory after his contract was not renewed. He had won just two of his twelve games in charge. 2013 - David James signed as Player/Coach for Icelandic side Íþróttabandalag Vestmannaeyja, moving on at the end of that season. 2023 - Brendan Rodgers was sacked as Manager of Leicester City. Also in international action 1988 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they beat the USSR 2-0 in the Final of the Four Nations Tournament in Berlin. 2023 – Future red Trey Nyoni played for England Under-16’s as they beat New Caledonia 2-0 in a friendly in France.
