Happy birthday Thommo 1954 - Phil Thompson was born in Kensington, Liverpool. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. Martin’s bow 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel made his reds debut as a substitute for the injured Álvaro Arbeloa in our 2-2 home draw with Aston Villa, our fourth successive tie in the League. Yossi Benayoun gave us the lead before Villa hit back through Marlon Harewood and a Fábio Aurélio own goal in the space of three minutes. Peter Crouch came off the bench to bag a late leveller. 1905 – Forward James Garside played the first of his five senior reds games as we were held to a 1-1 draw in the Second Division at Anfield by Lincoln City, with our goal coming from right-half Robbie Robinson. In comes Scott 2005 - Young keeper Scott Carson signed from Leeds United for £750,000, with Paul Harrison going on loan in the opposite direction. Carson made just nine first-team appearances, only managing to keep two clean sheets. He moved on to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m in July 2008 after loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa and Charlton Athletic. Meanwhile, young midfielder John Welsh signed a new contract on the same day that tied him to Anfield until summer 2007. However, he moved to Hull City a year later, in exchange for winger Paul Anderson. Meanwhile, future red Daniel Agger played for Denmark Under-21’s as they lost 1-0 to Panama A in an unofficial international in Panama City. Jürgen’s ten tons 2023 - Jürgen Klopp took charge of his thousandth game as a Manager as Chelsea held us to a dour goalless draw at Anfield. 2024 – We thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 at their Vitality Stadium, despite the scores being goalless at half time. Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota both bagged braces as Conor Bradley became the first Northern Irish player to represent the reds in the League since inside-right Sammy Smyth at Blackpool in April 1954. Recent disappointments 2021 – Gini Wijnaldum skippered the reds for the first time as Burnley won 1-0 at Anfield behind closed doors. Ashley Barnes’ late spot-kick brough to an end our 68-game unbeaten home League run. On the same day, young midfielder Tyler Morton signed a new contract. 2017 – Swansea City won 3-2 at Anfield, with Fernando Llorente netting twice shortly after the break. A Roberto Firmino brace brought us level but future Blue Gylfi Sigurðsson grabbed one of his five goals past us to date to secure the victory. 2012 – Craig Bellamy bagged our consolation as we tamely lost 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers with ex-red David N’Gog on the winning side. Beglin’s bad break 1987 - Jim Beglin had his leg broken by Gary Stevens in his 98th and final reds game, with Ian Rush nabbing the only goal of our League Cup Fifth Round tie late on at Goodison. We reached the Final that season for the sixth time. Africa’s finest 2003 - El-Hadji Diouf was named as the Glo-CAF African Footballer of the Year for the second successive season, a feat since surpassed by Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o who won the award three times in succession. That evening, he scored the opener in our 2-0 Worthington Cup Semi-final second leg win over Sheffield United at Anfield, with Michael Owen grabbing the decisive second in extra time, to take us through to Cardiff 3-2 on aggregate. This was our 400th goal in all competitions under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. Red centurions 2004 - Jamie Carragher made his comeback from a broken leg, playing his 200th League game as a late Kenny Miller strike denied us all three points at Wolverhampton Wanderers, after Bruno Cheyrou had put us ahead. This was our 200th League match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge, which had been rearranged after a flooded pitch before Christmas. 1950 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes reached a century of League appearances for the reds in our 2-0 defeat of Birmingham City at Anfield. Jimmy Payne and Albert Stubbins scored the goals. A first double 1899 - We beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield to complete the first ever League double in this fixture. Johnny Walker and Tom Robertson netted our goals. Beginnings and end 1939 – Right-half Harry Eastham nabbed his fourth and final reds goal as we thumped Stockport County 5-1 in the FA Cup Fourth Round at Anfield. Willie Fagan had a penalty saved, but Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer struck twice apiece, with Duggie Reid bagging the first of his six goals against the reds. 1933 - Outside-left Alf Hanson made his reds bow as we lost 5-2 at Aston Villa. Gordon Hodgson and Syd Roberts were on target for the reds, with centre-forward Les Bruton playing his eighth and last game for the club. Tom Waring nabbed two of his six goals against the reds, with Eric Houghton also scoring one of his six past us, Joe Beresford netting one of his four and James Gibson also on target. 1911 - Forward Joseph Brough played his eleventh and final reds game as we lost 2-0 at Nottingham Forest. Grenville Morris struck the last of his six goals past us, with Jack Armstrong also netting. A rare defeat 1978 - Birmingham City left Anfield with a 3-2 win to inflict on us one of just eleven home League defeats during the whole of the 1970’s. Birthday boy Phil Thompson and Ray Kennedy netted our goals. 500 away 1925 - We won 4-1 at Aston Villa in our 500th away League game, in a match postponed from three weeks earlier. Jimmy Walsh bagged a brace with Harry Chambers and Danny Shone also on the scoresheet as Len Capewell nabbed one of his six goals past us. Other birthdays 1961 - Former reserves forward Colin Russell was born in Liverpool. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. He left for Huddersfield Town in 1982. 1904 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was born in Coylton, Ayrshire. He signed from St. Mirren in February 1928 for £4,000 and struck four times in 254 reds games. He failed to win any honours during his spell at Anfield but had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren before joining the reds. He was a member of the Sunderland team that won the League title in 1936, having moved to Wearside in November 1935. Brucie’s back 1989 - Bruce Grobbelaar returned to the side after recovering from meningitis, with lookey-likey strike pairing John Aldridge and Ian Rush netting in a 2-0 defeat of Southampton at Anfield. 1967 - We also beat the Saints at home, with Chris Lawler and Alf Arrowsmith on target in a 2-1 victory in what was Bill Shankly’s 300th League game in charge. Twice against the Tractor Boys We have twice entertained Ipswich Town on this day in history. 1961 - We were held to a 1-1 draw in a Second Division meeting, when winger Kevin Lewis netted and Ted Phillips scored one of his five goals against the reds. Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower played his 105th and last reds game. 1986 - Paul Walsh, Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush struck as we won 3-0 in our Fifth Round League Cup tie. We were then knocked out by Queens Park Rangers in the Semi-final. Off on loan 2011 – Reserves defender Stephen Darby rejoined Notts County on loan, for whom he played a further eighteen times. 2009 – Jermaine Pennant moved to Portsmouth on loan. He had hit the target just three times in 81 reds games after signing from Birmingham City for £6.7m in July 2006. He appeared fourteen times for Pompey without scoring. 2000 - Phil Babb temporarily joined First Division Tranmere Rovers. He played seven times for the Lilywhites, before returning to the stiffs at Anfield. Ton up for Rigo 2006 - Ex-red Rigobert Song won his hundredth full international cap for Cameroon in their 3-1 defeat of Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Cairo. On the same day, Jari Litmanen was making his 99th appearance for Finland as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in a tournament in Riyadh, in what was Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge of the Finns. 2010 – Song also represented his country, as they drew 2-2 with Tunisia in a MTN Africa Cup of Nations group game in Angola. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah played for Egypt as they beat Uganda 1-0 in a group game in Gabon. Kolo Touré has played three times for the Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals on this day. 2002 – He was booked as they were held to a goalless draw by Togo in Mali. 2006 – He was on the winning side as Morocco lost 1-0 in Egypt, with the Ivory Coast making it all the way to the Final that year. 2008 – Nigeria lost 1-0 in Ghana. 2007 – Lucas captained Brazil as they drew 2-2 with Chile in a Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" game in Paraguay, with five players in total dismissed. 2016 - Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of the Czech Republic. Young English reds 1975 - Future red David Johnson netted as England Under-23’s beat their Welsh counterparts 2-0 in Wrexham. Phil Thompson made his debut at this level, on his 21st birthday, while future red Joey Jones also played. Other reds games 1956 – We beat Leicester City 3-1 in a Second Division match at Anfield, with Billy Liddell scoring a brace, including a penalty, and Alan Arnell also on target. 1928 – Sunderland won 5-2 in L4 with Fred Hopkin and Tommy Reid scoring our goals. Bobby Marshall struck one of his six goals past us, with Dave Halliday netting two of his twelve. Len Hargreaves also scored for the visitors, with reds keeper Arthur Riley punching the ball into his own net. 1922 – Harry Chambers bagged the only goal of our trip to Huddersfield Town late on. On the move 2004 - John Toshack took charge of Real Murcia, having been appointed two days earlier. This was the fourth Spanish club he had managed. They were bottom of the table in the Spanish League and he could not prevent them returning to the Second Division after just one season in the top flight. 2014 - Paul Ince was sacked as Manager of Blackpool after just eleven months in charge, leading them to just twelve victories in 42 games. 2019 – Ex-reds right-back Glen Johnson announced his retirement from playing, having been released by Stoke City at the end of the previous season. On the same day, future reds Wataru Endō and Takumi Minamino played as Japan beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 in an AFC Asian Cup Round of 16 tie in the United Arab Emirates. 2020 – Keeper Dan Atherton joined Marine on loan. On the same day, left-back Jack Robinson signed for Sheffield United from Nottingham Forest, so far playing eighteen times for the Blades. 2024 – Ex-reds loanee right-back Javier Manquillo was sold to Real Club Celta de Vigo by Newcastle United, having struck once in 110 outings for the Magpies since signing from Club Atlético de Madrid in July 2017.

A rare treble for the King 1982 - Kenny Dalglish scored a hat-trick as we beat Manchester City 5-2 at Anfield, with Phil Neal and Ian Rush adding the others. In fact, King Kenny only ever bagged two League trebles for the reds, with both coming against the side from Maine Road. 1975 - We also entertained City, with midfielder Peter Cormack nabbing the only goal of the game in his 178th and final reds appearance. Happy birthdays 1947 - Doug Livermore was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in November 1965 after starting out with Bolton Wanderers, making just eighteen appearances in our midfield before joining Norwich City in November 1970, but he returned to Anfield as Roy Evans’ Assistant in 1994. He left in November 1998 following Gérard Houllier taking full control. 1945 – Forward John Sealey was born in Wallasey. He signed for £25 as an amateur from Warrington Town in September 1963, scoring as he played his only reds game when the full first team was rested before the 1965 FA Cup Final. He moved on to Chester in June 1966. 1991 – Scottish centre-back Danny Wilson was born in Livingston. He signed from Rangers for an initial £2m fee in July 2010, playing nine senior games and making his full international debut before returning north of the border to sign for Heart Of Midlothian in May 2013 after a loan spell there. 2000 – Centre-half Tom Clayton was born in Rainsford. He turned professional in early 2019, having been with the club since the Under-9’s. He was an unused substitute in our League Cup defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, moving on to Swindon Town in July 2022. The mighty Finn 2001 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Sports Person of the Year. All twenty reporters on Finland’s best-selling newspaper Helsingin Sanomat voted for him, such is the respect his fellow countrymen had for his achievements that year. He became only the second team sport player to win this trophy, after Jari Litmanen. Derby joy at last 1919 - We beat Everton at Anfield with Tom Miller scoring a brace in a 3-1 win, to end a run of seven consecutive home derby defeats. Harry Lewis netted our other goal, with Bobby Parker netting one of his eight goals against the reds as left-back Bob Pursell reached a century of League games for us, while making his final reds outing. 1910 - We won at Goodison with Jack Parkinson nabbing the only goal of the game. Yet another unbeaten game 1980 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Leeds United, our 63rd consecutive home League game without defeat. However, we lost our next home League game, 2-1 to Leicester City. 1965 - We also entertained the Yorkshire side when they left with the points after winning 1-0, with Peter Lorimer on target. Roger Hunt played his 300th reds game that day, with Bill Shankly taking charge of the reds for the 300th time. On the way in 2017 – It was announced that Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk would sign from Southampton for a club record £75m on the following 1st January. He struck 23 times in 270 reds games across his first seven seasons, helping us to keep 108 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and FA Community Shield. Strikers departing 1984 - Michael Robinson was sold to Queens Park Rangers for £100,000. Joe Fagan brought the Irish international to Anfield from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1983 for £200,000. In his first season at the club, he won League title and European Cup medals, bagging a total of thirteen goals in 52 games during his Anfield career. He is now a much-respected football pundit and commentator for Spanish television. 2014 – Ex-red Fernando Torres was sold to AC Milan by Chelsea, although he was almost immediately loaned back to his first side Club Atlético de Madrid, re-joining permanently in July 2016. Suspended 1915 - Seven players were suspended for fixing our visit to Old Trafford the previous April, including four reds. We lost the match 2-0 with left-winger Jackie Sheldon and a United player both missing penalties. Sheldon was a former United player, while centre-forward Tom Miller later moved to Old Trafford. Half-back Tommy Fairfoul and full-back Bob Purcell were also involved. They were all offered a pardon in June 1919 on the condition that they apologised. Tons up 2016 – Left-back Alberto Moreno reached a century of reds games as we thumped Stoke City 4-1 at Anfield, despite falling behind early to one of Jon Walters’ seven strikes past us. Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino put us ahead before the break, with Giannelli Imbula putting through his own net. Daniel Sturridge completed the scoring. 2020 – Fabinho played his hundredth reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw by West Bromwich Albion in front of just 2,000 fans at Anfield, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Sadio Mané gave us an early lead, but Semi Ajayi headed in a late leveller. 1971 – We lost a top-flight fixture 1-0 at The Hawthorns, with Tony Brown netting one of his eight goals against the reds early on as we dominated against the bottom-of-the-table side. Fifty for George 1898 - George Allan scored his fiftieth reds goal as we held Notts County to a 1-1 draw at Trent Bridge in a First Division fixture. Reds debutants 1938 - Left-winger George Paterson debuted in a 1-0 First Division defeat of Stoke City at Anfield, with Willie Fagan on target. 1979 - Phil Thompson, Kevin Keegan and David Johnson all netted as we beat the Potters 4-0, with Phil Neal also on target from the spot. 1955 - Geoff Twentyman and Tony Rowley were on target as we lost 3-2 in a Second Division meeting at the Victoria Ground, with Twentyman also missing a spot-kick. Andy Graver struck one of his five goals against us, with Frank Bowyer bagging the last of his four past us and Tim Coleman also on the scoresheet in what was Don Welsh’s 200th League game in charge of the reds. 1930 - Keeper Andrew Aitken played his only reds game as we drew 3-3 at Blackburn Rovers, with Gordon Hodgson bagging a brace and forward Alan Scott scoring his first reds goal. Syd Puddefoot netted the final one of his six goals against the reds, with future red Les Bruton and Willie Rankin also scoring. 1913 - We were held to the same score at Anfield in another top-flight meeting, with James Dawson, Tom Miller and Billy Lacey on the scoresheet. Danny Shea struck two of his ten goals past the reds, with Walter Aitkenhead netting the last of his four. Winning in Sheffield 1986 - Our most recent game on this day saw an Ian Rush strike hand us a 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday. Defensive deaths 1950 - Custodian Billy McOwen died. He played 27 times for the reds after signing from Darwen in July 1892, helping us to the Second Division title in our first season in the Football League. He moved on to Blackpool in 1894 as he did not want to turn professional on our move into the top flight, as he also worked as a dentist. 1947 – Scottish half-back John McConnell died. He netted just once in 53 first-team appearances leading up to the First World War after signing from Airdrieonians for £80 in April 1909, including one in goal in only his second game! He left the reds to join Aberdeen in May 1912. Hit for four at Anfield 1958 - We beat Rotherham United 4-0 thanks to goals from Fred Morris, Jimmy Harrower and a Louis Bimpson brace. 1960 - The Merry Millers won 1-0 at Millmoor in another Second Division encounter, with Don Weston bagging the first of his four goals against the reds. Souey saved 1983 - Graeme Souness had a late penalty saved by keeper Mark Wallington as we were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw by Leicester City at Anfield. Sammy Lee and Ian Rush had previously struck for the reds, with Alan Smith bagging the first of his nine strikes against the reds and Ian Banks also on target. Honours even against the Gunners We have faced Arsenal three times on this day over the years, with the games ending in one away win apiece, and a draw. 1909 - We held Woolwich Arsenal 1-1 at the Manor Ground, with Jack Parkinson netting and keeper Augustus Beeby saving a penalty from Andy Ducat on his debut. 1927 - We were beaten 2-0 at Anfield, with Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers playing his 300th League game for the reds, centre-forward Willie Devlin making his nineteenth and last appearance and forward Tom Scott playing for the eighteenth and final time. Jimmy Brain bagged one of his eight goals against the reds, with Sid Hoar also netting. 1947 - Albert Stubbins and Billy Liddell were on target as we won 2-1 at Highbury, with Reg Lewis scoring one of his five goals against us. Tommy’s last 1948 – Left-winger Tommy McLeod played his seventh and final reds game as we lost 2-0 to Manchester United at Anfield. Stan Pearson struck one of his eleven goals against the reds, after Ronnie Burke had opened the scoring. Beating the Blues 1932 - Harold Barton and centre-forward Les Bruton nabbed the goals in a 2-0 win at Chelsea, with Bruton’s being his only reds strike. We have also twice entertained Chelsea. 1920 - Walter Wadsworth and Harry Chambers were on target in a 2-1 win. 1949 - Willie Fagan netted twice as we drew 2-2. Roy Bentley bagged one of his five goals against the reds, with Hugh Billington also on the scoresheet. Other reds games 1976 – We thumped Stoke City 4-0 at Anfield. Phil Thompson, Kevin Keegan and David Johnson added to a Phil Neal penalty, with Denis Smith dismissed for the visitors. 1954 – We lost a Second Division encounter 2-0 at Ipswich Town as Wilf Grant struck the last of his four goals against the reds before Billy Reed netted. However, the Tractor Boys remained at the bottom of the table after this victory. 1937 – Phil Taylor and Berry Nieuwenhuys netted as we drew 2-2 at Birmingham City. 1926 – Burnley held us to a 2-2 draw in L4, with Harry Chambers bagging a brace. Charles Sagar scored the first two of his four goals past us, with Alex Raisbeck putting through his own net. 1897 – Sunderland returned to the Northeast having won 2-0. New defenders 1974 - Phil Neal signed from Northampton Town for £66,000. He made 650 reds appearances, netting 59 times while becoming our most decorated player of all time, including four European Cups, eight League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 1996 - Jamie Carragher signed professional terms at Anfield. He made a total of 737 reds appearances before retiring in the summer of 2013, in a multitude of positions, and is ranked number two in the club’s all-time appearance holders list. He netted just five times as he helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three League Cups and two FA Charity Shields. 1987 - Reserves defender Brian Mooney joined Preston North End on loan, later signing for them permanently for a £25,000 fee. He only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986, only managing to net 26 goals in 128 appearances while at Deepdale, winning their Player of the Year award in 1988/89 as they missed out on promotion to the Second Division, then moving back into the top flight to sign for Sunderland for £225,000 in 1991. Yet another treble 1990 - Ian Rush bagged a League Cup treble in our 4-1 win at Crewe Alexandra, with his second strike taking him to 250 goals for the club. Steve Staunton also scored as we won 9-2 on aggregate to reach the Third Round. This was one of just two victories we ever enjoyed in our green and white Adidas away kit, with Steve Nicol featuring for the 300th time. Anfield debutants 2001 - Chris Kirkland made his reds bow as we lost 2-1 after extra time to Grimsby Town in the first game of our Worthington Cup defence, with all the goals coming after the ninety minutes. Gary McAllister nabbed our goal from the spot, his last reds strike, with Marlon Broomes equalising and the winner coming from boyhood red and ex-Evertonian Phil Jevons. Grégory Vignal broke his ankle early on in this game with Frode Kippe making his second and last senior appearances. 1920 - Forward Peter McKinney scored his only goal for the club on his reds debut as we drew 2-2 with Sheffield United in a top-flight fixture, with Dick Johnson also scoring. Albert Rawson struck twice for the Blades. 1929 - Centre-forward Harold Barton made his reds bow in our 1-1 First Division draw with Blackburn Rovers, with Henry Race and future red Les Bruton on target. International half centuries 1996 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his fiftieth cap for Norway as they beat Hungary 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Oslo. Future clubmate Øyvind Leonhardsen also featured. On the same day, ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal reached his half-century for Israel as they drew 1-1 with Russia in another qualifier in Tel-Aviv. Also in international action that day were Patrik Berger, Haukur Ingi Gudnason, Steve McManaman and future reds Markus Babbel, Paul Ince, Harry Kewell and Vladimír Šmicer. The lights come on at Goodison 1957 - The floodlights were used at Goodison Park for the first time as we lost 2-0 in a Floodlight Challenge Cup game played there to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Liverpool County FA, with both goals coming from Eddie Thomas. Most recently 2022 – We lost 3-2 at Arsenal with Gabriel Martinelli opening the scoring with one of his five goals past us to date. Darwin Núñez equalised, but Bukayo Saka put the Gunners ahead again in first-half stoppage time. Roberto Firmino levelled after the break, but Saka converted a penalty to secure victory. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs 1909 – Forward James Speakman made his reds debut as we beat Manchester United 3-2 at Anfield thanks to a brace from Jack Parkinson and a goal from Jimmy Stewart. Jimmy Turnbull converted a penalty, the last of his seven goals against the reds with the unrelated Sandy Turnbull scoring one of his five past us. 1965 - We lost 2-0 at Old Trafford, thanks to one of George Best’s seven goals against us and one of Denis Law’s six strikes past the reds, with both goals coming in the first half. International firsts and lasts 1999 - Dietmar Hamann won his first cap as a red, and his eighteenth in total, as Germany were held to a goalless draw by Turkey in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Munich. However, the result was enough to secure them top spot in the group, ahead of their opponents. Future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege also featured.
