Ged the centurion 2000 - Gérard Houllier’s hundredth game in sole charge was a 1-0 win at Manchester United, our fiftieth against them in all competitions. Danny Murphy’s free-kick after Gary Neville handled the ball shortly before half time sent United to their hundredth League defeat under Sir Alex Ferguson, with Michael Owen striking the crossbar after the break. United’s Luke Chadwick was sent off late on for bringing down Vladimír Šmicer. More victories over the Mancs We have twice beaten Manchester United in the top flight at Anfield on this day in history. 1995 - Robbie Fowler netted both in a 2-0 win, including a superb free-kick at the Kop end, while his second took him to fifty League goals. He also later struck twice in that season’s 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. 1921 - Billy Lacey and Harry Chambers netted in our 2-1 victory as we came from behind. A goalscoring debut 1955 - Jimmy Melia scored a left-foot volley in front of the Kop on his reds bow as we thumped Nottingham Forest 5-2 in a Second Division fixture. Billy Liddell scored a second-half hat-trick, including his 150th goal for the club, with John Evans netting our opener. James Barrett netted one of his four goals past us, with Peter Small also on target for Forest. 1996 - We also beat Forest at Anfield when Stan Collymore struck a brace against his old club as we won 4-2. Robbie Fowler was also on target, with our other strike being a Des Lyttle own goal. Kevin Campbell struck the first of his four goals against the reds, with Stuart Pearce also netting. Youngest ever reds 2019 – We fielded the club’s youngest ever side, at an average age of nineteen years and 182 days as the senior players were in Qatar for the FIFA Cup World Cup, although this record was broken just two months later. Pedro Chirivella captained the reds for the first time as we lost our League Cup Quarter-final 5-0 at Aston Villa. Centre-back Morgan Boyes, left-back Tony Gallacher and winger Luis Longstaff played their only games for the club, with forward Jack Bearne, left-back James Norris and midfielders Isaac Christie-Davies, Leighton Clarkson and Tom Hill all also debuting with Under-23’s Coach Neil Critchley taking charge, as midfielder Herbie Kane made his second and last senior outing. On the same day, the club reached agreement to sign Japanese forward Takumi Minamino at the end of the season from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. Debut strikes 2014 - We beat Bournemouth 3-1 in a Capital One Cup Fifth Round tie at their Goldsands Stadium, thanks to a Raheem Sterling brace and Lazar Marković’s first reds goal, with ex-Evertonian Dan Gosling on target for the home side. 2017 – We beat Bournemouth 4-0 at the renamed Vitality Stadium, with Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren and Mohamed Salah all on target before the break. Roberto Firmino completed the scoring. 1997 - Michael Owen won his only Under-21’s cap, netting in England’s 4-2 play-off defeat of Greece at Carrow Road, with strike partner and future red Emile Heskey bagging a brace. Jamie Carragher also played. Unfortunately, the Greeks qualified for the European Championships Finals, 4-4 on the away goals rule. Most recently 2023 – We were held to a frustrating goalless draw at Anfield by Manchester United, with Diogo Dalot sent off for the visitors in stoppage time. Joy against the Baggies 1932 - Gordon Hodgson and Harold Barton scored as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Anfield. 1898 - We also entertained the Baggies, when Hugh Morgan and Johnny Walker were on the scoresheet as we drew 2-2. Signing on 1919 - David Ashworth was appointed as Manager. He had previously guided Oldham Athletic from non-League into the top flight, to whom he returned in December 1922 with the reds en route to retaining the League title he had led them to the previous season. 1953 – Left-half Geoff Twentyman signed from his hometown club Carlisle United for £10,000. He netted nineteen times in 184 reds games, moving on to Ballymena United in March 1960. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a post he held for nineteen years, helping to bring players such as Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal and Ian Rush to the club. He died aged 74 in February 2004. Red farewells 1910 - Left-half Jim Bradley played his 185th and final reds game, as goals from Jack Parkinson and Jimmy Stewart handed us a 2-0 home win over Sheffield United as keeper Sam Hardy saved a penalty from Joe Kitchen. In fact, Bradley’s last three reds games were against the two Sheffield clubs! 1988 – Norwich City won 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a goal from Andy Townsend as midfielder Nigel Spackman appeared for the 63rd and final time. 1953 - Forward Sam Raybould died. He signed from New Brighton Tower in January 1900 for £250, scoring 130 times in 226 reds games and helping us to claim two League titles before moving on to Sunderland in May 1907. Mixed fortunes on Wearside 1938 - We won 3-2 at Roker Park thanks to goals from Bill Kinghorn and Phil Taylor and wing-half Tom Bush’s only reds strike as outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys played his 200th League game for us. 1949 - Ken Brierley and Cyril Done netted as Sunderland beat us by the same score in another First Division encounter as centre-half Laurie Hughes played his hundredth reds game. Len Shackleton bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Harry Kirtley and Tommy Reynolds also on the scoresheet. Parson off the mark 1927 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson scored the first of his two reds strikes as we lost 3-1 at Tottenham Hotspur. Frank Osborne bagged the last of his four goals past us with Jack Elkes nabbing the first two of his four against the reds. Thumping the Magpies 1983 - Graeme Souness bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as we beat Notts County 5-0 at Anfield. Steve Nicol and Ian Rush were also on target, with David Hunt putting through his own net. Other reds games 1977 – Phil Neal netted the only goal of Queens Park Rangers’ visit to L4 from the spot. 1960 – We drew a Second Division fixture 2-2 at Leeds United, with Kevin Lewis and Tommy Leishman on the scoresheet. Billy Bremner bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Tommy Murray also scoring. 1904 – We beat Bristol City 3-1 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Jack Parkinson bagged a brace, with Alex Raisbeck also netting. 1892 – Blackpool left L4 having beaten the reds 2-0 in a Lancashire League match. A Fox once more 1987 - Kevin MacDonald joined his old club Leicester City on loan as he continued his comeback from a broken leg suffered in September 1986. He later returned to Anfield, but only made a further seven senior appearances before returning to Filbert Street permanently. Vlad’s Arabian night 1997 - Future red Vladimír Šmicer bagged a treble in the Czech Republic’s 6-1 thumping of the United Arab Emirates in a Confederations Cup game in Saudi Arabia. On the move 2013 – Former reserves right-winger Toni Silva signed for CSKA Sofia, having been released by Barnsley six months previously. 2020 – Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai signed for RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. from Red Bull Salzburg. He scored twenty goals in 91 games while helping Die Roten Bullen to clinch the DFB-Pokal twice. Rio on target 2023 – Future red Rio Ngumoha scored for England Under-16’s as they beat the Netherlands 4-3 in a friendly at St. George’s Park. Scots in action 1975 - Ex-reds reserves striker Ted MacDougall won his seventh and final cap for Scotland as a substitute in their 1-1 European Championships qualifying draw with Romania at Hampden Park. Future red Kenny Dalglish also played. 2003 - Robbie Foy won his only cap for Scotland Under-20’s as they won 2-1 in Portugal in a friendly. 2015 – Future red Ozan Kabak skippered Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of North Macedonia in Side. Honoured 2020 - Thiago Alcântara, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were all named in the FIFA FIFPRO Men's World 11. -
Happy birthdays 1972 - Markus Babbel was born in Munich. He arrived on a free transfer from Bayern München in June 2000 and was a vital member of the treble-winning team bagging six goals in 73 games, until he was struck down by Guillain-Barré syndrome, moving to VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer in July 2004 after a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers. 1998 – Irish centre-half Conor Masterson was born in Celbridge, signing on from Lucan United for £900,000 on his sixteenth birthday. He was released in the summer of 2019 having failed to break through and is now with Gillingham. 1978 - Icelandic former reserves forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason was born in Keflavik. He never made an official senior appearance for the reds after signing from his hometown club in December 1997, returning there three years later after just three appearances on our bench in May 1998. Anfield christened 1888 - The first ever League game at Anfield was played as Everton beat Accrington 2-1. On the losing side 1894 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the Football League, going down 2-1 at home to Aston Villa in our third First Division game, having remained unbeaten through the whole of our debut season in the Second Division. Harry Bradshaw struck our consolation that day. 1926 - We also entertained the Villains, with Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw on target in a 2-1 victory, while George Stephenson bagged the first of his four goals against the reds. Disappointing debuts 2001 - New signing Jerzy Dudek made his debut in our 3-1 defeat at home to Aston Villa. Arrivederci JAR 2008 - John Arne Riise was sold to Roma for £4m after 348 reds appearances and 31 goals since his arrival for the same fee from AS Monaco in June 2001. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1937 – Forward Ted Harston signed from Mansfield Town for £300,000 after an amazing 81 goals in seventy Third Division North outings. He struck on his reds bow as we were thumped 6-1 at Chelsea that August, as well as bagging a brace in his second game. However, he only played a further three games, returning to amateur football with Shorts in the Kent League in August 1939 after suffering a broken leg that ended his professional career. Happy McBirthday 1971 - Jason McAteer was born in Birkenhead. After playing against the reds in the 1995 Coca Cola Cup Final, he moved to Anfield from Bolton Wanderers for £4.5m that September. He was a regular under Roy Evans, but was soon shown the door by Gérard Houllier, who sold him to Blackburn Rovers for £4m in January 1999 after six goals in 139 reds games. 1914 – Forward Ron Jones was born in Mold. He signed from Wrexham in March 1938, scoring once in five outings before the war intervened. He returned to Wrexham in peacetime. Thommo departs 2004 - Phil Thompson stepped down as Assistant Manager. He had been in this role for five years after Gérard Houllier hired him early on in his reign. Thommo stepped into the breach for much of the 2001/02 season while Houllier was recovering from heart surgery, helping us to reach the Quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League and finish second in the League. 1932 – Centre-forward Jimmy Smith left the reds to move into amateur football with Tunbridge Wells Rangers. He still holds the British seasonal scoring record, netting 66 for Ayr United in 1927/28. He signed for the reds from Ayr for £5,500 in September 1929, going on to bag 38 goals in 62 reds games including two on his debut against Manchester United. Razor on target in New York 1994 - Ex-red Ray Houghton bagged the only goal of the game at the Giants Stadium in New York as the Republic of Ireland upset the odds to beat Italy in their opening World Cup game. Fellow ex-reds John Aldridge and Steve Staunton also played, as did future reds Phil Babb and Jason McAteer. This was the first time the Irish had beaten Italy in eight attempts. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland in their 1-1 draw with the USA in Detroit. A reds friendly 1948 - We beat Swedish side Djurgårdens IF 3-2 in a friendly in Brooklyn, New York City. Billy Liddell, Ken Brierley and Jack Balmer netted for the reds. Three amigos 2008 - With Spain already having qualified for the Quarter-finals as group winners, Fernando Torres was rested alongside many first-choice players, meaning that Xabi Alonso skippered the side to a 2-1 European Championships Finals defeat of Greece in Salzburg, with Álvaro Arbeloa and Pepe Reina also playing, while Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his final cap as an Eintracht Frankfurt player for the Greeks. Wembley glory for the 96 1989 - We clinched the FA Cup for the fourth time, in an all-Merseyside final, five weeks after the Hillsborough disaster that claimed 96 lives. John Aldridge, who was playing his hundredth reds game, opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a strike that was named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season, the only time the same player has claimed the award in consecutive seasons. We led until Stuart McCall equalised towards the end of the second half. Ian Rush put us back in front in extra-time before McCall became the first substitute to score twice in an FA Cup Final to level the match again. McCall’s achievement was then matched by Rushie who won us the cup with his 23rd FA Cup goal. The departure of a legend 1996 - Ian Rush signed for Leeds United on a free transfer, after his 346 strikes in 660 games had helped shoot us to countless honours. However, he bagged just three goals in 43 games for Leeds. Last win of the season 1985 - We played our only other first-class game on this day, winning 3-0 at West Ham United, our last win of a season that saw us finish second in the First Division, thirteen points behind Everton, and then go on to lose the European Cup Final on a tragic day at the Stade du Heysel in Brussels. Paul Walsh netted a brace, with Jim Beglin bagging the other. Jan Mølby played at centre-back, but lost five teeth in a collision with the Hammers’ Dave Swindlehurst. He netted 27 times in 77 reds games, before moving on to Hull City in June 1928. 1925 - Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson signed from Aberdeen for £1,750. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, and also wrote a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 2002 – Defender David Raven signed as a professional. He made four first-team appearances but left Anfield to sign for Carlisle United in July 2006. Jack’s treble 1948 - Jack Balmer scored a hat-trick as we beat a Baltimore All Stars side 9-2, with Ken Brierley netting a brace and Billy Liddell, Willie Fagan, Jim Harley and Albert Stubbins all also on the scoresheet. 1953 - We played another friendly in the USA, beating a New England Select 4-0 in Fall River, thanks to two goals from Mervyn Jones and strikes from Jack Smith and Don Welsh. A special day for Emlyn 1972 - Emlyn Hughes nabbed his only full international goal as England beat Wales 3-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff, up against John Toshack. 1980 - He played in the same tournament, no longer as a red, as England drew 1-1 with Northern Ireland at Wembley, as he captained them for the last time. More international goals 1975 - Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Ted MacDougall both scored as Scotland beat Northern Ireland 3-0 in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. 1990 - Future red Dean Saunders grabbed the only goal of Wales’s friendly encounter with Costa Rica at Ninian Park. 1998 - Milan Baroš was on target as the Czech Republic Under-17’s drew 1-1 in a friendly in Poland. New coaches 2010 - Dietmar Hamann joined MK Dons as player-coach, while Gary McAllister was appointed First Team Coach at Middlesbrough, although he moved on to Aston Villa just four months later. Hamann played thirteen first-team games while in Milton Keynes, moving on to become a First Team Coach at Leicester City in February 2011. 2016 – Ex-reds boss Brendan Rodgers was appointed Manager of Celtic on a twelve-month rolling contract, leading them to domestic trebles in each of his first two campaigns before leaving for Leicester City in February 2019. 2019 – Former reds First Team Coach Steve Clarke was appointed Manager of Scotland, after a successful spell in charge of Kilmarnock. Also on the move 1955 – Full-back Steve Parr was released by the reds, then joining Exeter City. He made twenty appearances without notching after signing on a free transfer from Farrington Villa in May 1948. 2004 - Reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan left Anfield to join Chester City on a free transfer, making 85 appearances in two spells with the Blues. Meanwhile, Jason McAteer and Phil Babb were both released by Sunderland. McAteer went on to join Tranmere Rovers, while Babb retired from the game. 2008 - Former reserves forward Conal Platt signed for Conference National side Forest Green Rovers. European joy 1998 – Future reds forward Fernando Morientes featured for Real Madrid as they beat Juventus 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League Final in Amsterdam, the first of three European Cups he won. 4-3 for the first time 1996 - We played out a real humdinger with Newcastle United at Anfield. Robbie Fowler put us ahead after two minutes, but we went in 2-1 down at half-time after one of Les Ferdinand’s six strikes past us and a David Ginola goal. Robbie Fowler levelled the scores with his 22nd strike in his last 21 outings, but Faustino Asprilla put the visitors ahead again two minutes later. Stan Collymore tied the match once more, and then grabbed a dramatic last-gasp winner right at the death, in a match later voted the best in the Premiership’s first decade. A new record capture 1981 - Craig Johnston signed from Middlesbrough for a club record £650,000 fee. He grabbed forty goals, including one in the 1986 FA Cup Final, in 271 reds games, also helping us to claim the European Cup, five League titles and two League Cups in his time at Anfield. Debuts leading to contrasting careers 1981 - Ronnie Whelan got his reds career off to a flying start by scoring on his debut, a 3-0 home League win over Stoke City, with Terry McDermott adding a brace. Whelan went on to play 493 reds games in all. 1965 – We also beat the Potters at Anfield when Gordon Milne, Ian St. John and Roger Hunt were on target in a 3-2 victory. Roy Vernon struck the last of his six goals against the reds, with Harry Burrows also on target. 1897 - Keeper Charlie Jowett played his only senior reds game as we drew 2-2 at Anfield with The Wednesday. Inside-forward Andrew McCowie made the first of his 35 appearances for the club in this top-flight game. Willie Michael nabbed his fifth and last reds foal with Frank Becton converting a penalty while Laurie Bell bagged the first of his four strikes against the reds, with Arthur Brady also on the scoresheet for the visitors. 1899 - Custodian Bill Perkins debuted in a 3-2 defeat of Newcastle United at Anfield. Jack Cox, Johnny Walker and George Allan scored our goals, while half-back Tom Cleghorn played his seventieth and final reds game. Perkins went on to play 117 reds games, including every game in our first League championship winning season in 1900/01. On our way to Wembley 1974 - We clinched our place in the FA Cup Final by beating Leicester City 3-1 in a replay at Villa Park. Brian Hall struck straight after half time before Len Glover equalised, but goals from Kevin Keegan and John Toshack took us to Wembley. On the way to Athens 2007 - Jamie Carragher played his 58th game in the European Cup, breaking Phil Neal’s club record, as we won 3-0 at PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of our Champions League Quarter-final. Steven Gerrard bagged his fifteenth goal in the European Cup, breaking Ian Rush’s club record in the process, while playing his fiftieth Champions League game. John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch also netted, with Riise’s strike being his 31st and final one for the club. Dirk Kuyt seemingly got himself booked at the end of the game by obstructing a free-kick to guarantee he would be banned for second leg at Anfield and ensure a clean slate for the Semi-final. Unfortunately, Fábio Aurélio ruptured his Achilles, which kept him out of the first team until September. Derby victories 1999 – This day brought an end to five years without a derby victory as we beat Everton 3-2 at Anfield, despite Olivier Dacourt opening the scoring in the first minute. The game is still remembered for Robbie Fowler’s goal-line sniffing celebration after he struck a penalty in front of the away fans, one of two goals he scored that day, to add to a Patrik Berger strike. Young right-back Steven Gerrard helped to preserve all three points with a couple of scrambled goal-line clearances late on. Francis Jeffers became the youngest post-war Merseyside derby goalscorer in this game, aged just eighteen years and 68 days. 1976 - Phil Neal missed a penalty at Anfield, but this did not prove costly as David Fairclough netted the only goal of a game that was played at eleven o’clock, due to the Grand National taking place at Aintree that afternoon. This was the only occasion in that title-winning season that we won four League games on the bounce. A sweet win for Thommo at Old Trafford 1972 - Goals from Chris Lawler, John Toshack and Emlyn Hughes handed us a 3-0 win at Manchester United, with Phil Thompson making his reds debut. Unfortunately, we did not win there again for another six years. 1931 – We also played a First Division match at Old Trafford, with Gordon Hodgson on the scoresheet as we drew 1-1. This was our 200th game in Europe. 1934 – Gordon Hodgson and Berry Nieuwenhuys struck as we won 2-0 at Huddersfield Town as right-back Willie Steel reached a century of League outings for us. Hat-trick hero 1920 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw netted all three goals in our home First Division win over Derby County, with forward Billy Matthews debuting for the reds, at centre-half. 1937 - Harry Eastham was on target as we were beaten 4-1 at the Baseball Ground as right-half Ted Savage reached a century of reds appearances. Jack Nicholas and Ronnie Dix each netted one of their four goals against the reds, with Dai Astley bagging one of his six past us and Charlie Napier also on target. Bimpson off the mark 1953 - Louis Bimpson bagged the first of his 39 reds goals as we beat Cardiff City 2-1 in a top-flight encounter at Anfield, with Bill Jones also on target. Most recently 2021 – We won 3-0 at Arsenal behind closed doors, thanks to a brace from Diogo Jota and a Mohamed Salah strike. Double award winners 2009 - Rafael Benítez and Steven Gerrard were named the Barclays Manager and Player of the Month, respectively. On the same day, Gerrard agreed a new contract until 2013, with Dirk Kuyt signing on until 2012. Happy birthdays 1958 – Former reserve team kit man John Wright was born in Liverpool. He was with the club for nearly a decade, initially as a masseur at the Academy, and is the father of former reds right-back Stephen Wright. 1901 - Left-winger Billy Chalmers was born in Aberdeen. He only made two senior appearances after signing from Old Aberdeen FC in 1923, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in June 1925. 1926 - Outside-left Ken Brierley was born in Ashton-under-Lyme. He went on to net eight times in 61 first-team appearances after signing from Oldham Athletic for £7,000 in February 1948, returning there in March 1953. Red farewells 1915 - Defender Phil Bratley played his thirteenth and final reds game in our 6-2 thumping at Aston Villa, with Harry Hampton scoring his second hat-trick against the reds in this fixture, and a club record fourteenth for the Villains, the last of his fifteen goals against us, and debutant Harry Nash also bagging a treble. Jackie Sheldon converted a penalty with Tom Miller grabbing our other goal. Bratley returned to Rotherham County, one of his former clubs, later that year. 1926 – We drew 2-2 with Birmingham City in L4. John Bradford bagged two of his fifteen goals past us, including a penalty. Gordon Hodgson scored as we also benefited from a Bill Hunter own goal, with centre-half Walter Wadsworth playing his 242nd and last reds game. Jocky at the wrong end 1990 - Alan Hansen scored an own goal as we beat Wimbledon 2-1 with Ian Rush and Gary Gillespie scoring at the right end. He had also put through his own net at Plough Lane the season before! In charge 1954 - Andy Beattie managed Scotland for the first of seventeen times as they lost 4-2 to England at Hampden Park in a World Cup qualifier that also counted towards the British International Championships. Beattie had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 2011 - Paul Ince left as Manager of Notts County by mutual consent, after losing a club record nine games in a row. Allan’s moment of glory 1897 - George Allan won his only Scottish cap as they lost 2-1 to England at Crystal Palace in the British International Championships. He was therefore the first player to be capped by the Scots while on our books. Future red Edgar Chadwick won his seventh and final cap for the home side. The black-tie affair involved a main course of Chicken Zingara, with guests including Bill Shankly, Derby County boss Brian Clough, Jimmy Tarbuck, Kenny Lynch and Gerry Marsden. Final cap 2010 – Keeper Tyrell Bedford won his second and last cap for England Under-16’s as they beat Japan 2-1 in the Montaigu Tournament. Matty Regan and Raheem Sterling both also featured. United substitute Alan Smith broke his leg in a challenge with John Arne Riise. We went on to claim the trophy for the seventh time at the end of the season. On the same day, Roy Hodgson took charge of Finland as they lost a friendly 2-0 in Japan, with ex-red Daniel Sjölund featuring. 1976 - We also faced the Red Devils, holding them to a goalless draw at Old Trafford in a League fixture. V. to a goalless draw at their WWK Arena in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie. Most recently 2023 – We won 2-0 at Newcastle United, with Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo both netting before Toon keeper Nick Pope was sent off after just 22 minutes. Taking charge 1999 - Kevin Keegan was appointed interim Manager of England, while still in charge of Fulham. He handled both jobs for three months before taking charge of the national side permanently. 2013 - Paul Ince was named as Blackpool boss. Yet another win 1981 - We registered our 85th consecutive home match without defeat as we beat Alliance Premier League side Altrincham 4-1 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, thanks to goals from Terry McDermott, Ray Kennedy and a Kenny Dalglish brace, with shipping clerk Graham Heathcote converting a penalty for the visitors in front of the Kop. Future Academy Manager John Owens and Zak Whitbread’s dad Barry were both on the losing side while reds legend Bill Shankly bizarrely travelled to the game on the Altrincham team coach and went into the visitors’ dressing room before the game, as part of a promotional campaign for Robinson’s Barley Water that he was involved with. We lost our next home match 2-1 to Leicester City, at the end of the month, to bring the run to an end. This was the most recent day on which both the reds and Everton have played at home at the same time, with the Blues hosting Arsenal in another cup tie. He served as a Director from the formation of the club until July 1921, having two lengthy spells as the club’s Chairman. Title decider? 2019 – We lost 2-1 at Manchester City, narrowing our lead at the top of the table to four points. Sergio Agüero put the home side ahead with the last of his seven goals past us after a Sadio Mané shot was within 1.1cm of crossing the line after an attempted clearance rebounded. Roberto Firmino equalised after the break. However, Leroy Sané bagged a late winner as City went on to retain the title, the latest of his four goals against us. Crazy Horse for the three 1973 - Emlyn Hughes appeared in an unofficial international as The Three beat The Six 2-0 at Wembley Stadium. This was a ‘Common Market’ match with The Three representing Denmark, the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, while The Six featured players from Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany. 1977 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s as they beat Switzerland 3-2 in a friendly in Israel. Other reds games 1989 – Ronnie Whelan headed in the only goal of Aston Villa’s visit to Anfield. 1920 – We lost 3-2 at Sheffield United, with Stan Fazackerley bagging a brace for the Blades and Harry Johnson scoring the first of his seven goals against the reds. Tom Miller scored twice for us, with his second coming from the rebound after Harold Gough had saved his spot-kick. Moving on 2007 - Former reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan joined Rochdale on loan from Chester City, although he did not make an appearance before returning to the Deva Stadium. 2013 – Keeper Jamie Stephens moved to Welsh Premier League side Airbus UK Broughton on a temporary basis, before being released by the reds in the summer. At the World Cup 2022 - Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling both featured as England lost 2-1 to France in the World Cup Quarter-final in Qatar. On the move 1998 - Peter Beardsley was released by Fulham. He racked up a total of 28 appearances for them, including during two brief loan spells, scoring seven times. He moved on to Third Division Hartlepool United at the end of that month. 2013 - Yossi Benayoun signed for Queens Park Rangers having been released by Chelsea, netting three times in seventeen outings before returning to Israel to join Maccabi Haifa in June 2014. 2018 – It was announced that future reds boss Arne Slot would become Head Coach of AZ Alkmaar the following July. He signed from Blackpool for an initial £6.75m in July 2011, netting twice in 37 reds games and helping us to claim the League Cup before moving to Stoke City for a reported £4m in August 2012. 1988 - Former reserves custodian Dave Roberts was born in Birkenhead. He moved up to Melwood in the summer of 2006 and was back-up keeper to David Martin. He had played a key role in our two victorious FA Youth Cup campaigns, including saving penalties in a shoot-out in the Semi-final in 2006 and the Final the following year, but was released in May 2007. 1913 - Matthew John Fitzsimmons was born in Toxteth. He signed from Mather United in October 1936 and played his only senior reds game when he stood in for regular centre-half Fred Rogers in our 3-1 defeat at Bolton Wanderers in September 1938. 1923 – Right-winger Alex Muir was born in Inverkeithing, Fife. Happy birthday Gary 1965 - Gary Ablett was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his eighteenth birthday, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. He sadly died in January 2012, aged just 46. 1993 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux was born in Camden, north London. He left Tottenham Hotspur to join the reds in 2014, moving on to Swindon Town in July 2016 after a successful loan spell there. Red farewells 1977 - John Toshack made his 246th and final reds appearance in a 1-1 draw with Bristol City, setting up the goal for Kenny Dalglish. 1898 – Left-back Tom Wilkie played his 64th and last game for the club as we lost 3-0 at Bury as Jimmy Settle struck two of his eleven goals past us, with Michael Kelly also on target. Gordon’s century 1930 – Forward Gordon Hodgson scored his hundredth League goal for the reds in our 2-2 top-flight draw at Derby County. Zico the boss 1996 - Phil Neal was appointed Manager of First Division Manchester City. He was in charge for less than two months, leading them to just two wins in his ten games in charge, before being replaced by ex-Nottingham Forest boss Frank Clark. Moving towards another trophy 1983 - We were held to a 1-1 League Cup draw at Fulham. Ian Rush equalised shortly after Kevin Lock had put the home side ahead from the spot, and it took us until a second replay to finally reach the Fourth Round. Joy in the north east at last 1902 - We won at Newcastle United for the first time after six previously unsuccessful attempts. Sam Raybould and Arthur Goddard netted in a 2-1 victory. Top of the table 1986 - We climbed to the summit of the First Division for the first time that season when goals from Ian Rush, Steve Nicol and Craig Johnston secured a 3-1 victory at Queens Park Rangers as Nicol reached a century of League outings for the reds. Bells foiled 2006 - Struggling striker Craig Bellamy had a weak penalty saved as we won a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Birmingham City, with Daniel Agger grabbing the only goal of the game. Unfortunately, the night was marred by a shoulder injury suffered by Momo Sissoko. In comes Lauri 2007 – Sixteen-year old Finnish forward Lauri Dalla Valle signed from Joensuun Iloiset Peli-Pojat for a reported £600,000, going on to sign a professional contract with the reds in September 2008. He moved to Fulham in August 2010 after just one brief substitute appearance as part of the deal that brought left-back Paul Konchesky to Anfield. Future reds on the move 1983 - Future reds keeper Mike Hooper signed for his hometown club Bristol City on a free transfer from non-League Mangotsfield. He only made three first-team appearances in three seasons at Ashton Gate, moving on to Wrexham in July 1985. 1994 - Øyvind Leonhardsen joined Wimbledon from Rosenborg BK for £650,000. He had struck twenty times in 63 League games for the perpetual Norwegian champions, spending three successful seasons with Wimbledon before joining the reds. On the same day, David Thompson officially signed for the reds as a professional. Another title 2009 - Liverpool and Adrian Valles won the 2009 Superleague Formula motor racing championship at Jarama in Spain. Internationals on target 1961 - Ian St. John bagged a brace on his tenth full international appearance as Scotland beat Wales 2-0 at Hampden Park in the British International Championships. 2017 – Bobby Duncan came off the bench to score for England Under-17’s as they beat Portugal 3-2 in a friendly in Chesterfield, with Curtis Jones also featuring with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. On the same day, Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-17’s as they thrashed Andorra 7-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Bosnia & Herzegovina. 2018 – Future red Harvey Elliott struck his first goal for England Under-17’s in their 3-1 defeat of the Republic of Ireland in a friendly in Dublin, with his clubmate Fábio Carvalho skippering and Steve Cooper managing the side. 2013 – Trent Alexander-Arnold and Herbie Kane played for England Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Northern Ireland in Bournemouth. 2019 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon Under-23’s as they drew 1-1 with Ghana in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Cairo. Other birthdays 1917 - Left-back Barney Ramsden was born in Sheffield. He arrived on a free transfer from Sheffield Victoria in March 1935 and helped us to claim the first post-war League title in 1947, making a total of 63 first-team appearances without notching. He moved on to Sunderland in March 1948. 1963 - Former reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe was born in Washington in Tyne & Wear. He joined Southend United on a free transfer from Bradford City on his 36th birthday. He remained at Roots Hall for a year, making just six appearances before being released. Other reds games 1969 – Wolverhampton Wanderers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1919 – Harry Chambers and Billy Lacey netted as we won 2-1 at Bradford Park Avenue. 1913 – Burnley held us to a 1-1 draw in L4. Bertie Freeman scored one of his nine goals against the reds with Lacey levelling. Signing on 2016 - Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kevin Stewart and Ben Woodburn all signed new contracts. Stewart left the club for Hull City for a reported £6m in July 2017 after twenty senior reds games. Alexander-Arnold has netted ninteen times in 310 outings across his first eight seasons, with Woodburn notching once in eleven first-team appearances as he became our youngest ever scorer aged seventeen years and 45 days, moving on to Preston North End in July 2022. Abel return 2006 - Abel Xavier re-signed for Middlesbrough. He was sacked by them ten months earlier after being found guilty of breaching UEFA’s anti-doping regulations. He was our keeper 1988 – Belgian goalie Simon Mignolet was born in Sint-Truiden. He signed from Sunderland for £9m in June 2013, playing 204 times, but only managing to keep 65 clean sheets, moving on Club Brugge for an initial reported £6.4m in August 2019. Dirk’s treble 2011 – Luis Suárez dazzled as Dirk Kuyt scored a remarkable close-distance hat-trick as we beat Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield, two days after boss Kenny Dalglish’s sixtieth birthday. Javier Hernández bagged a late consolation, the first of his three goals past us to date, with record signing Andy Carroll making his reds bow as a substitute. 1993 - Mark Hughes headed Manchester United’s first goal at Anfield in five visits, one of his nine goals past us, before Ian Rush equalised in our Premiership meeting. Brian McClair nodded in the winner from a corner. Through against Barca 2007 - Jamie Carragher played his 57th game in the European Cup to equal Phil Neal’s club record as we lost 1-0 at home to Barcelona, although we still progressed to the Champions League Quarter-finals on the away goals rule. New owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks attended their first game at Anfield in a cauldron of noise. Both John Arne Riise and Momo Sissoko rattled the woodwork, but Eiður Guðjohnsen put the visitors ahead on the night with a quarter of an hour remaining, although we held on for a famous victory. Seeing off the Geordies 2002 - After floodlight failure delayed kick-off, we put on a sparkling display to beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield, with a brace from Danny Murphy and a Dietmar Hamann strike. Nicolas Anelka put on probably his best display in a red shirt. Further good news that day came with the announcement that Gérard Houllier was back on Merseyside, as he continued his recuperation from his heart operation. A new Case 1982 - Jimmy Case made his first appearance back at Anfield after joining Brighton & Hove Albion, as they won 1-0 in the League with Andy Ritchie on target. This was midfielder Kevin Sheedy’s fifth and last appearance prior to crossing the park to join the Toffees two months later. A rare defeat 1976 - Middlesbrough won 2-0 at Anfield, inflicting on us one of just eleven home League defeats during the whole of the 1970’s. Graeme Souness and Phil Boersma both played for the visitors. A hat-trick of Huddersfield and Spurs We have played Huddersfield Town three times on this day over the years. 1920 - We lost 2-1 at Leeds Road in the FA Cup Fourth Round as they went on to reach the Final, after taking the lead through Tom Miller on a muddy pitch. 1948 - Albert Stubbins got all our goals in a 4-0 home League win, with outside-left Ken Brierley making his debut, while wing-half Stan Palk played his thirteenth and final reds game as George Kay took charge in the League for the 200th time. 1954 - We were beaten 3-1 at Anfield in another First Division encounter, with Johnny Evans on the scoresheet as Gerry Burrell bagged a brace for the Terriers, with Tommy Cavanagh also on target. We have also played Tottenham Hotspur three times on this day, with each game ending in a draw. 1971 - The most recent was an FA Cup Sixth Round tie at Anfield that ended goalless, although we won the replay as we headed towards Wembley. European draws We have twice drawn European Third Round first legs on this day over the years. 1985 - Austria Wien were known as Austria Memphis due to a sponsorship deal when we drew 1-1 at their Franz Horr Stadion, on our way to a fifth European Cup Final, with Steve Nicol on the scoresheet late on, to notch our 150th goal in Europe’s premier club competition. 1997 - Robbie Fowler netted as we drew by the same score at Norwegian side Brann in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, before we went on to win the return leg 3-0 at Anfield to progress. 2018 – We were held to a goalless draw in L4 by Porto in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie, having won the first game in Portugal 5-0. Off 2016 - We won 2-1 at Crystal Palace, despite Joe Ledley giving the home side the lead shortly after the break and James Milner being dismissed after an hour. Roberto Firmino equalised before future Eagle Christian Benteke grabbed a stoppage time winner from the spot. Philippe Coutinho was making his hundredth League appearance for the reds. International beginnings and end 1905 - John ‘Geezer’ Hughes and George Latham both made their international debuts for Wales in their 3-1 defeat of Scotland in the British International Championships in Wrexham. 2014 – Victor Moses won his last cap while on loan with the reds as Nigeria and Mexico shared a goalless draw in Atlanta, Georgia. 2018 - Mateusz Musiałowski debuted for Poland Under-15’s as they beat Macedonia 4-0, with fellow future red Jakub Ojrzyński also featuring. Thommo’s double ton 1979 – We shared a goalless draw with Coventry City in torrential rain at Highfield Road as Phil Thompson played his 200th League game for the reds. For Archie 1899 - We lost 1-0 to Manchester City at Anfield in a testimonial for full-back Archie Goldie. He signed from Clyde in June 1895 and helped us to the Second Division title the following year, netting once in 149 reds games, many alongside his brother, left-half Bill. He left Anfield to sign for New Brighton Tower in 1900. Management moves 1988 - Bobby Campbell was appointed Manager of Chelsea. He was in charge for three years, leading them to the Second Division title in his first full season. 2016 – Former Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll was sacked as Head Coach of Walsall after just three months in charge. Stumbling towards Wembley 1965 - We held Leicester City to a goalless draw at Filbert Street in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup. Youngsters in action for their countries 2002 - Robbie Foy netted a consolation for Scotland Under-17’s in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying defeat to England at Ashton Gate. David Raven skippered England, with Mark Smyth also playing. Meanwhile, future red Christian Poulsen featured for Denmark as they lost 1-0 to Norway in an unofficial international in Brøndby. 2019 – Future red Calvin Ramsay played for Scotland Under-16’s in their 3-1 friendly win over Albania in Malta. 2001 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-16’s in their 5-0 thumping of Bosnia-Herzegovina. 2000 – Michael Foley played for the Irish Under-16’s as they held the host nation to a goalless draw in the Belgium Tournament. Israelis in action Avi Cohen twice represented his country on this day in history. 1977 - He won his eighth cap as Israel beat Japan 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Tel-Aviv. 1988 - He appeared alongside future red Ronnie Rosenthal as they lost an Olympics qualifier 2-0 to Australia in Melbourne. He had signed from Hull City in May 1948 and netted once in 146 reds appearances, as well as fathering future reds striker Dean. He died in January 2009.
