Happy birthday Thommo 1954 - Phil Thompson was born in Kensington, Liverpool. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. Martin’s bow 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel made his reds debut as a substitute for the injured Álvaro Arbeloa in our 2-2 home draw with Aston Villa, our fourth successive tie in the League. Yossi Benayoun gave us the lead before Villa hit back through Marlon Harewood and a Fábio Aurélio own goal in the space of three minutes. Peter Crouch came off the bench to bag a late leveller. 1905 – Forward James Garside played the first of his five senior reds games as we were held to a 1-1 draw in the Second Division at Anfield by Lincoln City, with our goal coming from right-half Robbie Robinson. In comes Scott 2005 - Young keeper Scott Carson signed from Leeds United for £750,000, with Paul Harrison going on loan in the opposite direction. Carson made just nine first-team appearances, only managing to keep two clean sheets. He moved on to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m in July 2008 after loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa and Charlton Athletic. Meanwhile, young midfielder John Welsh signed a new contract on the same day that tied him to Anfield until summer 2007. However, he moved to Hull City a year later, in exchange for winger Paul Anderson. Meanwhile, future red Daniel Agger played for Denmark Under-21’s as they lost 1-0 to Panama A in an unofficial international in Panama City. Jürgen’s ten tons 2023 - Jürgen Klopp took charge of his thousandth game as a Manager as Chelsea held us to a dour goalless draw at Anfield. 2024 – We thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 at their Vitality Stadium, despite the scores being goalless at half time. Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota both bagged braces as Conor Bradley became the first Northern Irish player to represent the reds in the League since inside-right Sammy Smyth at Blackpool in April 1954. Recent disappointments 2021 – Gini Wijnaldum skippered the reds for the first time as Burnley won 1-0 at Anfield behind closed doors. Ashley Barnes’ late spot-kick brough to an end our 68-game unbeaten home League run. On the same day, young midfielder Tyler Morton signed a new contract. 2017 – Swansea City won 3-2 at Anfield, with Fernando Llorente netting twice shortly after the break. A Roberto Firmino brace brought us level but future Blue Gylfi Sigurðsson grabbed one of his five goals past us to date to secure the victory. 2012 – Craig Bellamy bagged our consolation as we tamely lost 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers with ex-red David N’Gog on the winning side. Beglin’s bad break 1987 - Jim Beglin had his leg broken by Gary Stevens in his 98th and final reds game, with Ian Rush nabbing the only goal of our League Cup Fifth Round tie late on at Goodison. We reached the Final that season for the sixth time. Africa’s finest 2003 - El-Hadji Diouf was named as the Glo-CAF African Footballer of the Year for the second successive season, a feat since surpassed by Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o who won the award three times in succession. That evening, he scored the opener in our 2-0 Worthington Cup Semi-final second leg win over Sheffield United at Anfield, with Michael Owen grabbing the decisive second in extra time, to take us through to Cardiff 3-2 on aggregate. This was our 400th goal in all competitions under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. Red centurions 2004 - Jamie Carragher made his comeback from a broken leg, playing his 200th League game as a late Kenny Miller strike denied us all three points at Wolverhampton Wanderers, after Bruno Cheyrou had put us ahead. This was our 200th League match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge, which had been rearranged after a flooded pitch before Christmas. 1950 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes reached a century of League appearances for the reds in our 2-0 defeat of Birmingham City at Anfield. Jimmy Payne and Albert Stubbins scored the goals. A first double 1899 - We beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield to complete the first ever League double in this fixture. Johnny Walker and Tom Robertson netted our goals. Beginnings and end 1939 – Right-half Harry Eastham nabbed his fourth and final reds goal as we thumped Stockport County 5-1 in the FA Cup Fourth Round at Anfield. Willie Fagan had a penalty saved, but Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer struck twice apiece, with Duggie Reid bagging the first of his six goals against the reds. 1933 - Outside-left Alf Hanson made his reds bow as we lost 5-2 at Aston Villa. Gordon Hodgson and Syd Roberts were on target for the reds, with centre-forward Les Bruton playing his eighth and last game for the club. Tom Waring nabbed two of his six goals against the reds, with Eric Houghton also scoring one of his six past us, Joe Beresford netting one of his four and James Gibson also on target. 1911 - Forward Joseph Brough played his eleventh and final reds game as we lost 2-0 at Nottingham Forest. Grenville Morris struck the last of his six goals past us, with Jack Armstrong also netting. A rare defeat 1978 - Birmingham City left Anfield with a 3-2 win to inflict on us one of just eleven home League defeats during the whole of the 1970’s. Birthday boy Phil Thompson and Ray Kennedy netted our goals. 500 away 1925 - We won 4-1 at Aston Villa in our 500th away League game, in a match postponed from three weeks earlier. Jimmy Walsh bagged a brace with Harry Chambers and Danny Shone also on the scoresheet as Len Capewell nabbed one of his six goals past us. Other birthdays 1961 - Former reserves forward Colin Russell was born in Liverpool. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. He left for Huddersfield Town in 1982. 1904 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was born in Coylton, Ayrshire. He signed from St. Mirren in February 1928 for £4,000 and struck four times in 254 reds games. He failed to win any honours during his spell at Anfield but had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren before joining the reds. He was a member of the Sunderland team that won the League title in 1936, having moved to Wearside in November 1935. Brucie’s back 1989 - Bruce Grobbelaar returned to the side after recovering from meningitis, with lookey-likey strike pairing John Aldridge and Ian Rush netting in a 2-0 defeat of Southampton at Anfield. 1967 - We also beat the Saints at home, with Chris Lawler and Alf Arrowsmith on target in a 2-1 victory in what was Bill Shankly’s 300th League game in charge. Twice against the Tractor Boys We have twice entertained Ipswich Town on this day in history. 1961 - We were held to a 1-1 draw in a Second Division meeting, when winger Kevin Lewis netted and Ted Phillips scored one of his five goals against the reds. Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower played his 105th and last reds game. 1986 - Paul Walsh, Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush struck as we won 3-0 in our Fifth Round League Cup tie. We were then knocked out by Queens Park Rangers in the Semi-final. Off on loan 2011 – Reserves defender Stephen Darby rejoined Notts County on loan, for whom he played a further eighteen times. 2009 – Jermaine Pennant moved to Portsmouth on loan. He had hit the target just three times in 81 reds games after signing from Birmingham City for £6.7m in July 2006. He appeared fourteen times for Pompey without scoring. 2000 - Phil Babb temporarily joined First Division Tranmere Rovers. He played seven times for the Lilywhites, before returning to the stiffs at Anfield. Ton up for Rigo 2006 - Ex-red Rigobert Song won his hundredth full international cap for Cameroon in their 3-1 defeat of Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Cairo. On the same day, Jari Litmanen was making his 99th appearance for Finland as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in a tournament in Riyadh, in what was Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge of the Finns. 2010 – Song also represented his country, as they drew 2-2 with Tunisia in a MTN Africa Cup of Nations group game in Angola. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah played for Egypt as they beat Uganda 1-0 in a group game in Gabon. Kolo Touré has played three times for the Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals on this day. 2002 – He was booked as they were held to a goalless draw by Togo in Mali. 2006 – He was on the winning side as Morocco lost 1-0 in Egypt, with the Ivory Coast making it all the way to the Final that year. 2008 – Nigeria lost 1-0 in Ghana. 2007 – Lucas captained Brazil as they drew 2-2 with Chile in a Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" game in Paraguay, with five players in total dismissed. 2016 - Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of the Czech Republic. Young English reds 1975 - Future red David Johnson netted as England Under-23’s beat their Welsh counterparts 2-0 in Wrexham. Phil Thompson made his debut at this level, on his 21st birthday, while future red Joey Jones also played. Other reds games 1956 – We beat Leicester City 3-1 in a Second Division match at Anfield, with Billy Liddell scoring a brace, including a penalty, and Alan Arnell also on target. 1928 – Sunderland won 5-2 in L4 with Fred Hopkin and Tommy Reid scoring our goals. Bobby Marshall struck one of his six goals past us, with Dave Halliday netting two of his twelve. Len Hargreaves also scored for the visitors, with reds keeper Arthur Riley punching the ball into his own net. 1922 – Harry Chambers bagged the only goal of our trip to Huddersfield Town late on. On the move 2004 - John Toshack took charge of Real Murcia, having been appointed two days earlier. This was the fourth Spanish club he had managed. They were bottom of the table in the Spanish League and he could not prevent them returning to the Second Division after just one season in the top flight. 2014 - Paul Ince was sacked as Manager of Blackpool after just eleven months in charge, leading them to just twelve victories in 42 games. 2019 – Ex-reds right-back Glen Johnson announced his retirement from playing, having been released by Stoke City at the end of the previous season. On the same day, future reds Wataru Endō and Takumi Minamino played as Japan beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 in an AFC Asian Cup Round of 16 tie in the United Arab Emirates. 2020 – Keeper Dan Atherton joined Marine on loan. On the same day, left-back Jack Robinson signed for Sheffield United from Nottingham Forest, so far playing eighteen times for the Blades. 2024 – Ex-reds loanee right-back Javier Manquillo was sold to Real Club Celta de Vigo by Newcastle United, having struck once in 110 outings for the Magpies since signing from Club Atlético de Madrid in July 2017. -
Farewell Crazy Horse 2004 - Red legend Emlyn Hughes died aged 57. ‘Crazy Horse’ signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967 and played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. More legendary farewells 1985 - Phil Neal played his 650th and final reds game, coming on for Steve McMahon as we won a First Division match 3-0 at Coventry City to close the gap on Manchester United at the top of the table. Jim Beglin bagged his third and final reds goal, with Paul Walsh and Ian Rush also netting that day. 1935 – Gordon Hodgson netted his 241st and last reds goal in our 3-2 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield. Lance Carr converted a penalty, with Jimmy McDougall also on target with his twelfth and final strike for the club. Eric Houghton bagged the last of six goals against the reds, with Harry Broome nabbing one of his five. Anfield trebles galore 1907 - Forward Joe Hewitt scored a hat-trick as we trounced Notts County 6-0, as right-half Bobby Robinson netted his fiftieth goal for the club. William McPherson and Charlie Hewitt were also on target as right-back Alf West reached a century of reds outings. 1957 - We also thumped them, this time a division lower, with Jimmy Melia, Alan A’Court, Billy Liddell and Tony Rowley netting in a 4-0 win. Liddell that day played his 430th League game for the reds, equalling keeper Elisha Scott’s club record. 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged a treble in our 3-0 win over Portsmouth, the first of three hat-tricks he netted in consecutive games. 1929 - Harry Race scored all three goals in our defeat of Bolton Wanderers in another top-flight match. 1963 - We also beat the Trotters with Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan on target in our 2-1 win at Burnden Park. Treble save 2022 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Derby County in the Third Round of the League Cup, with the tie heading straight to penalties. Caoimhín Kelleher saved three spot-kicks to win a club record fourth penalty shot-out as a goalkeeper. Forwards Ben Doak and Layton Stewart both debuted in this game, with forward Melkamu Frauendorf appearing for the second and last time. Management moves 1990 - Mark Lawrenson was sacked as Manager of basement club Peterborough United after thirteen months in charge. He was replaced by Dave Booth, who immediately led them to promotion. 2017 – Ex-reds keeper Brad Friedel was named Head Coach of New England Revolution. On the same day, future red Xherdan Shaqiri played in a World Cup play-off as Switzerland won 1-0 in Northern Ireland. Happy birthdays 1965 - Short-lived reds winger Jimmy Carter was born in Hammersmith. He spent just nine months at Anfield after signing from Millwall for £800,000 in January 1991, making only eight appearances before leaving for Arsenal at a loss of £300,000. 2006 – Northern Irish midfielder Kieran Morrison was born. He joined the reds from Manchester United at Under-14’s level, turning pro in April 2024. 1904 – Bill Murray was born in Alexandria in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. He signed from Clydebank in November 1927, netting once in four senior outings before joining Third Division North side Barrow in January 1930, becoming their captain. 1886 - Forward Joseph Brough was born in Burslem. Frank Worthington bagged one of his three strikes against the reds. 1895 - Another left-back struck his only reds goal on this day in history, with Tom Wilkie on target in a 3-1 defeat of Leicester Fosse in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Fred Geary added a brace as half-back John McLean made his 29th and last reds outing. 1901 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 at Anfield as Andy McGuigan bagged a brace. Tommy Robertson scored from the spot, with inside-forward Charlie Satterthwaite netting his thirteenth and last goal for the club. An Arsenal treble 1974 - Arsenal won for the third consecutive League season at Anfield, this time 3-1. Ex-Gunner Ray Kennedy netted our consolation as they completed three of just eleven home League defeats we suffered throughout the whole of the 1970’s. Alan Ball struck two of his eleven goals past us, with Liam Brady also on the scoresheet. 1988 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless draw in a League Cup Third Round replay at Highbury. Larry fought the law 1972 - Larry Lloyd became the first player to fight a ban before the newly formed independent disciplinary tribunal. He was appealing his dismissal in the 2-0 win over Manchester City back in August. Thumping the Cottagers 2013 – We beat Fulham 4-0 at Anfield in a League encounter, with Fernando Amorebieta heading through his own net before Martin Škrtel doubled our lead. Luis Suárez then struck either side of the break. Brucie besmirched 1994 - A certain national rag printed allegations that Bruce Grobbelaar had accepted bribes to throw games. He eventually successfully sued. Also recently 2009 – We drew with Birmingham City for the fifth consecutive time in the League, this time 2-2 at Anfield. David N’Gog put us in front but we went in 2-1 down at the break, thanks to a goal from Christian Benítez and a stunning long-range strike by Cameron Jerome. Steven Gerrard handed us a share of the spoils from the spot after N’Gog’s controversial fall in the area. 2023 – We lost a UEFA Europa League group game 3-2 in Toulouse, with Jarell Quansah’s stoppage-time leveller ruled out. Aron Dønnum and Thijs Dallinga struck either side of half time, before Cristian Cásseres put through his own net. Frank Magri restored the home side’s two-goal advantage, with Diogo Jota on target late on. Red centurions 2002 - We conceded our 200th goal under Gérard Houllier’s sole charge as Jerzy Dudek dropped the ball at Middlesbrough to enable Gareth Southgate to score. This began our atrocious run that winter. 1912 - We also faced Boro with Arthur Metcalf netting a brace in our 4-3 win at Ayresome Park. Tom Miller and Jack Parkinson were also on target. Jackie Carr scored the first of his five goals against the reds, with George Elliott netting one of his eight and future red Jimmy Nicholl also scoring. 1966 – Full-back Chris Lawler scored as he reached a century of League games for the reds in our 2-0 defeat of Burnley at Anfield, with Peter Thompson also on target. Disappointment against the Mancs 2003 - Manchester United won 2-1 at Anfield with Harry Kewell bagging our consolation following a Ryan Giggs brace, two of his five goals against the reds. Beating the Blues 1994 - We came from behind to beat Chelsea 3-1 at Anfield with Neil Ruddock adding to a Robbie Fowler brace. John Spencer scored the first of his three goals against the reds. 1968 - We also beat them in a home top-flight fixture as Ian Callaghan netted in a 2-1 win, with Tommy Smith scoring from the spot. Alan Birchenall netted one of his four strikes past the reds. A European win 2000 - We won 3-2 at Slovan Liberec to reach the Third Round of the UEFA Cup 4-2 on aggregate. We fell behind on the night before Nick Barmby, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen struck, with Heskey also striking an upright. Owen netted just 21 seconds after coming on for Dietmar Hamann. Deano for Wales again 1996 - Ex-red Dean Saunders struck in his third consecutive game for Wales as they were thumped 7-1 by the Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier in Eindhoven. Future reds Markus Babbel and Paul Ince were both also in World Cup action that day. French on target 2005 - Djibril Cissé scored in France’s 3-2 friendly defeat of Costa Rica in Martinique with ex-red Alou Diarra also in the side, while Nicolas Anelka won his first cap as a Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü player, bagging his only goal while playing in Turkey. 2016 – Dominic Solanke netted for England Under-20’s as they thumped Nigeria 8-1 in South Korea. Another thumping win 1918 - We beat Port Vale 4-0 in a home Wartime League meeting thanks to goals from Thomas Green, Thomas Bennett and a Harold Wadsworth brace. On the move 1999 - Ex-red Gareth Roberts joined Tranmere Rovers from Greek side Panionos on a free transfer after a loan spell. He scored fourteen times in 337 games for Rovers in total, moving on to League One outfit Doncaster Rovers in July 2006. 2001 - Alan Navarro moved to Prenton Park on loan. He struck twice in four games before signing permanently the following January. 1966 - Reserves winger Brian Mooney was sold to Preston North End. He had signed from Home Farm for £20,000 in August 1983 but only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986. 2015 – Ex-reds winger Adam Hammill re-joined Barnsley on a short-term deal, before signing a two-year deal the following June. On the same day, former midfielder and First Team Coach Mike Marsh joined Huddersfield Town’s coaching staff, moving on the following May to take up a role with England Under-17’s. Vlad’s end 2009 - Vladimír Šmicer retired from playing. He made 184 reds appearances following his £3.75m transfer from Racing Club de Lens, scoring nineteen times, including a crucial strike in Istanbul. He left Anfield for Girondins de Bordeaux in June 2005, having helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. He ended his career back at SK Slavia Praha, his first club. Award winners 2020 - Jürgen Klopp was named as the Northwest Football Awards' Manager of the Season for 2019-20, having led us to the League title. At the same event, Ian St. John was awarded the Lifetime Contribution to North West Football. International beginnings and end 2017 - Krisztián Németh won his first cap as a New England Revolution player as Hungary lost a friendly 2-1 in Luxembourg. 2008 – John Barnes took charge of Jamaica for the first time as they won a friendly 2-0 in the Cayman Islands. 2006 - Academy midfielder Sean Highdale won his first cap for England Under-16’s as they beat Northern Ireland 3-0 in a Victory Shield game in Ballymena. On the same day, future red Alex Manninger played for Austria Under-21’s as they held Latvia to a goalless draw in a European Championships qualifier in Gloggnitz. 1996 – Future red Vegard Heggem netted his only goal for Norway Under-21’s as they thrashed Switzerland 7-3 in a European Championships qualifier in Biel. 1993 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme won his eleventh and last Under-21's cap as Norway lost 3-1 to Turkey in a European Championships qualifier in Istanbul. More internationals in action 2022 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Jamaica in a friendly in Yaoundé. 2001 – Chris Kirkland and future red Jermaine Pennant faced future reds coach John Heitinga as England drew 2-2 with the Netherlands in the first leg of their European Championships qualifying play-off in Utrecht. -
Rush scored one, Rush scored two 1983 - Ian Rush scored five goals, becoming the third of five reds to do so in one game, as we thumped fourth-placed Luton Town 6-0 at home in the League, with his hat-trick completed by the 36th minute and his last being his fiftieth in the League for us. This was particularly impressive considering that he had to take painkillers before the game for a niggling groin injury and had only been passed fit two hours before the game. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, his 99th in the League for the reds. Amazingly, Tony Woodcock grabbed five goals for Arsenal on the same day, in their 6-2 victory at Aston Villa. He’s red, he’s white 2000 - Nick Barmby scored against Everton at the Anny Road end, before Kevin Campbell equalised with one of his four goals against the reds. We steamrollered our way to a 3-1 win in the second half, thanks to an Emile Heskey strike and a Patrik Berger penalty, after Vladimír Šmicer was felled by Thomas Gravesen, who was sent off. 1996 - Barmby arrived at Goodison from Middlesbrough for £5.75m. He went on to score 24 times in 133 games for the Toffees before moving across Stanley Park. Milestone goals 2005 - Bolo Zenden scored his first reds goal as we beat West Ham United 2-0 at Anfield, with Xabi Alonso having opened the scoring. We had twice previously beaten the Hammers on this day in history. 1973 - John Toshack bagged the only goal of our League Cup Second Round replay at Anfield. 1989 - Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley netted in a 2-0 win at Upton Park. 1938 – Huddersfield Town held us to a 3-3 draw in L4. Harman van den Berg scored his third and last reds goal after a minute, with Willie Fagan scoring from the spot and Jack Balmer also on target. Happy birthdays 1866 - Keeper Ned Doig was born in Arbroath. He made 53 reds appearances after signing from Sunderland for £150 in August 1904, helping us to the Second Division title in his first season, and played on until April 1908, finishing as our oldest ever player aged 41 years and 165 days. 1993 – Midfielder Conor Thomas was born in Coventry. He joined the reds on loan in January 2011, playing and training with the reserves, as well as training with the first team, but returned to Coventry City after a hamstring injury. Cup record 1892 - Our first ever home fixture in the FA Cup resulted in a 9-0 annihilation of Welsh side Newtown in the Second Qualifying Round, still our record win in the competition. Outside-right Tom Wyllie grabbed a hat-trick, with Malcolm McVean nabbing a brace and forward Jonathan Cameron, half-back John McCartney and outside-left Hugh McQueen all adding to an Andy Townsend own goal, the first we had ever benefited from. Matt and Hugh McQueen both made their reds bows, with McCartney bagging the first of his eight goals. League Cup trebles 1985 – The transfer-listed Paul Walsh scored a hat-trick as we beat Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at home. Kenny Dalglish netted the other late on as Ronnie Whelan appeared for the 200th time. 1986 - Kenny was also on target when Steve McMahon scored his second League Cup hat-trick of the season in our 4-1 defeat of Leicester City at Anfield in another Third Round tie. Most recently 2016 – We won 4-2 at Crystal Palace, twice taking the lead through Emre Can and Dejan Lovren before being pegged back by a James McArthur brace. Joël Matip nabbed his first reds goal to send us into the break ahead again, with Roberto Firmino completing the scoring. Harry Bedford bagged a brace for the Rams, two of his nine strikes against us. Fabs at the Olympics 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they lost 3-1 to South Africa in an Olympics group game in Brisbane. Youngsters starting out 2003 - Unione Sportiva Triestina’s Alberto Aquilani bagged his only goal at this level while winning his first Under-20’s cap in Italy’s 2-0 defeat of Romania. 1998 – Future red Christian Poulsen won the first of his four caps for Denmark Under-19’s as they thumped Switzerland 4-0 in a friendly in Vejle. Youngsters on the world stage 2001 - Fernando Torres played for Spain Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to Burkina Faso in the World Championship Finals in Trinidad. Unfortunately, they also lost their third group game to crash out at this stage. Fellow future red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina in the same tournament as they beat Oman 3-0 as they went on to top the same group. Digger in charge 2008 – John Barnes was named as Manager of Jamaica. He took over that November, moving on in June 2009 to take charge of Tranmere Rovers. Other reds games 2000 – Steven Gerrard netted as we drew 1-1 at West Ham United, with Paolo Di Canio scooring for the home side. 1955 – We lost a Second Division fixture 3-1 at Leicester City, with Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. 1949 – We won 3-2 at Birmingham City. Reds on the way out 1992 - Dean Saunders was sold to Aston Villa for £2.3m, just a year and 25 goals in 61 games after arriving from Derby County for a British record £2.9m fee in July 1991. 1986 - Gary Ablett joined Hull City on loan. Beating the champions 2016 – We thumped reigning champions Leicester City 4-1 at Anfield. Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané scored before Jamie Vardy pulled a goal back, the third of his ten past us to date. Adam Lallana struck after the break with Firmino adding a fourth late on. The crowd of 53,075 was the largest at Anfield since May 1977 as the new, expanded Main Stand was used for the first time. Up against Spurs 1952 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield in a top-flight match. John Smith equalised after Eddie Baily had given the visitors the lead from distance, with Billy Liddell converting a late penalty. 2005 - Our fixture at White Hart Lane ended goalless. Christening Roker Park 1898 - We took part in the first ever game at Roker Park as Sunderland won 1-0 in our First Division encounter thanks to a Jim Leslie strike. 1927 - We also lost on Wearside, with Gordon Hodgson netting in our 2-1 defeat. Off on loan 2013 – Portuguese midfielder João Teixeira joined Brentford on loan, but only played twice before returning early to Melwood as the Bees struggled in League One. Red beginnings 1895 – Half-back Bill Keech signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s, although he played just six Second Division games, helping us to claim the title that season, returning to his former club in 1897. He arrived at Melwood from Manchester United’s Academy, failing to break through to the first team, moving on to Blackburn Rovers in August 2017. Corey Whelan played for the Irish Under-21’s for the first time as a Phoenix Rising player, with ex-red Raheem Sterling on target as the senior England side beat Kosovo 5-3 in a European Championships qualifier in Southampton, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson also featuring. Future red Takumi Minamino netted as Japan won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Myanmar while Harvey Elliott bagged his only goal for England Under-17’s while a reds player, winning his tenth and last cap at this level in their 2-2 friendly draw in Poland.
