Crystal smashed 1989 - Eight outfield players scored, a League record, in our 9-0 humiliation of Crystal Palace at Anfield, still our joint best top-flight victory. John Aldridge came off the bench to score a penalty with his first kick, in his final reds game. Glenn Hysén struck the first of his seven reds goals in this game. For the record, our other scorers that day were John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Steve McMahon and Ian Rush, with Steve Nicol nabbing a brace. David Burrows, Alan Hansen, Ronnie Whelan and substitute Jan Mølby were the only outfield reds not on target. Geoff Thomas blew a golden chance to net for the visitors, missing a penalty. This was actually Kenny Dalglish’s hundredth League win as reds boss, in his 167th game. Alec off 1977 – Left-back Alec Lindsay left the club to sign for Stoke City, after a successful loan spell. He had signed from his hometown club Bury for £67,000 in March 1969 and netted eighteen times in 248 reds games, helping us to the League and UEFA Cup in 1973, and FA Cup and FA Charity Shield the following year. 1974 – Defender Dave Rylands moved on to Hereford United. He joined the reds in 1968, turning pro in March 1970, only making one senior reds appearance. Red trebles 2020 – Mohamed Salah struck a treble, including two penalties, as we opened our League campaign with a 4-3 victory over Leeds United behind closed doors at Anfield. Virgil van Dijk headed in the other goal as we led on four separate occasions. 2009 – Yossi Benayoun struck his third reds hat-trick, all in different competitions, as we thumped Burnley 4-0 at Anfield, with Dirk Kuyt also on target. The Israeli midfielder also had another strike wrongly chalked off for offside before nabbing his third. Happy birthdays 1957 - Steve Ogrizovic was born in Mansfield. He signed from Chesterfield for £70,000 in November 1977 but only made five senior appearances for the reds before joining Coventry City in August 1982, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1987, playing over 600 games. 1977 - David Thompson was born in Birkenhead. He turned professional in November 1994 and scored five times in 56 reds games before Gérard Houllier sold him for £3m to Coventry City in August 2000. 1980 - Former reserves winger Richie Partridge was born in Dublin. He only managed three first-team appearances for the reds, and is now a practising physiotherapist, recently working with the Academy’s Under-21’s and then the first team. 2004 – Centre-half Terence Miles was born in Liverpool. He turned pro in September 2021, having arrived at the Academy at Under-7’s level. He is the nephew of former reserves forward John Miles. Albert’s the one for me 1946 - Albert Stubbins signed from Newcastle United for a British record £13,000 fee after six strikes in thirty games. He was also tempted by being offered a well-paid part-time position as ‘Inspector of Canteens’ that involved testing the quality of tea served and chatting to dockers and other workers! He struck 83 times in 178 reds games, and won one League title, before becoming a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade. Digger off the mark 1987 - John Barnes scored his first senior reds goal as we beat Oxford United 2-0, with John Aldridge also on target against his old club, so netting in his fifth consecutive game. This was our first home game of the season, with future red Ray Houghton impressing for the visitors. Kenny back at Anfield 1993 - Kenny Dalglish won at Anfield as visiting Manager for the only time, thanks to a goal from scouse ex-reds reserve Mike Newell for Blackburn Rovers, the last of his eight strikes against the reds. Steve McManaman reached a century of reds appearances while Jan Mølby played his 200th League game for the club. 1908 - We also faced Rovers, losing 1-0 at Ewood Park, with keeper Sam Hardy reaching a century of League games for the reds. A European first 1972 - We played our first game in the new UEFA Cup, beating West Germans Eintracht Frankfurt, who were playing their first competitive fixture of the season. We won 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan and Emlyn Hughes. This was Bill Shankly’s fiftieth European game in charge of the reds. Two of our three other European games on this day also ended in victory. 1995 - We beat Russian outfit Spartak-Alania Vladikavkaz 2-1 in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign, Mirdzhalol Kasimov opened the scoring with Steve McManaman equalising before Jamie Redknapp struck a thirty-yard winner, with just 39 travelling reds present, all seated in the presidential box for their own safety! 1996 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye bagged the only goal of our European Cup Winners’ Cup opener at Finnish side Myllykosken Pallo-47. 2006 - We held PSV Eindhoven to a goalless draw in our opening UEFA Champions League group fixture in the Philips Stadion with Jamie Carragher appearing for the fiftieth time in the competition. Most recently 2021 – Mohamed Salah bagged his hundredth goal in Premier League football, including his time with Chelsea, to open the scoring at Leeds United. Fabinho netted after the break, before Pascal Struijk was dismissed for the home side following a challenge that left Harvey Elliott with a dislocated ankle. Sadio Mané struck in stoppage time to secure a 3-0 victory. 2015 – We lost 3-1 at Manchester United, with Divock Origi making his reds bow from the bench. Christian Benteke struck late on as we limped to defeat. Reporting in 2012 – The Hillsborough Independent Panel reported, shocking many people by revealing the extent of the establishment cover-up at the time of the disaster, its aftermath and ever since. It led to an unprecedented apology from Prime Minister David Cameron. Double debutants 2010 – Left-back Paul Konchesky and midfielder Raul Meireles both made their reds bows in our lifeless goalless draw at Birmingham City. Derby joy We have twice beaten Everton in Wartime league matches at Anfield on this day in history. 1942 - George Mills netted the only goal of the game. 1945 - Billy Liddell and Les Shannon were on the scoresheet as we won 2-1. A thumping win 1936 - We trounced Grimsby Town 7-1 in a First Division game at Anfield. Fred Howe and Vic Wright struck twice apiece, with Berry Nieuwenhuys, Jack Balmer and Matt Busby all also on target. Reds farewells 1931 - Harry Barkas played his fifth and final reds game as we lost 2-1 at Leicester City, with Gordon Gunson bagging our consolation. Ernie Hine struck one of his ten goals against the reds, with Sep Smith also on target. 1903 - Right-back Jack Chadburn played his second and last reds game as we lost 3-1 at home to The Wednesday, with forward Sydney Smith appearing for the second and final time. Jack Cox scored as Andrew Wilson struck two of his eight goals past us, with Harry Davis also on target. 1980 – Tommy Smith quit as youth team boss in order to concentrate on his business interests. Gunning for a draw We have twice drawn with Arsenal in First Division matches on this day in history. 1925 - Jimmy Walsh netted our goal at Highbury, with Charlie Buchan on target for the home side, to add to the eighteen strikes he had registered against the reds while with Sunderland. 1951 - The game at Anfield ended goalless. Mixed fortunes against the Hammers 1962 - We beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield thanks to an Ian St. John brace, with his second strike being the club’s 3,000th in top-flight football. Gerry Byrne played his hundredth reds game with Johnny Byrne on target for the visitors. 1998 - We lost 2-1 at Upton Park in a Premiership fixture, with Karl-Heinz Riedle nabbing our consolation after John Hartson and Eyal Berkovic had put the Irons ahead. Stevie out on loan 2002 - Young reserve Stephen Warnock joined Bradford City on loan. He played twelve times for the Bantams, scoring in a League defeat at Sheffield Wednesday. International debuts 1984 - Steve Nicol made his Scotland debut in their 6-1 defeat of Yugoslavia at Hampden Park, as John Wark won his 29th and final cap. Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Graeme Souness were both on the scoresheet. On the same day, Jan Mølby won his first cap as a reds player, and ninth in total, as Denmark beat Austria 3-1 in a friendly in Copenhagen. Mark Lawrenson, Michael Robinson, Ronnie Whelan, ex-red Joey Jones and future reds John Barnes, Glenn Hysén and Mark Wright all also featured in internationals that day. 1990 - Future red Gary McAllister won his first cap as a Leeds United player as Scotland beat Romania 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Hampden Park. John Barnes, Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton, Ronnie Whelan and future reds István Kozma, Jari Litmanen and Mark Wright all also played for their countries that day. 1932 – Future reds forward Sam English won the first of his two caps for Northern Ireland as they lost 4-0 to Scotland in Belfast in the British International Championships, with reds keeper Elisha Scott also in the side. On target for their countries 2007 - Fernando Torres bagged his first goal as a red as Spain beat Latvia 2-0 in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Oviedo. Future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos netted a brace, his last goals while with Eintracht Frankfurt, with John Arne Riise also on target as Norway were held to a 2-2 draw by Greece in Oslo, with ex-red Frode Kippe also in the home side. Ex-red Michael Owen struck twice as England beat Russia 3-0 in another qualifier, with Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Stewart Downing and ex-red Emile Heskey also featuring. Craig Bellamy bagged a brace while winning his first cap for Wales as a West Ham United player, as they won a Euro 2008 qualifier 5-2 in Slovakia, with John Toshack in charge. Andriy Voronin faced future red Alberto Aquilani, while Roy Hodgson managed a Finland side that included Sami Hyypiä and ex-red Daniel Sjölund as they were held to a goalless draw by Poland in Helsinki. Luis Suárez won his first cap as an Ajax player as Uruguay drew a friendly 0-0 in South Africa. Daniel Agger, Ryan Babel, Dirk Kuyt, future reds Ádám Bogdán, Milan Jovanović, Robbie Keane, Ragnar Klavan and Raul Meireles and ex-reds Nicolas Anelka and Milan Baroš also played for their countries that day. 1979 - Ex-red Kevin Keegan struck the only goal of England’s European Championships qualifier at Wembley against Denmark. On the same day, ex-red Xherdan Shaqiri struck from the spot as Switzetrland beat Andorra 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Sion. Sadio Mané won his first cap as an Al Nassr player in Senegal’s 1-0 friendly defeat by Algeria in Dakar, with ex-red Ki-Jana Hoever playing for the Dutch Under-21’s for the sixth and last time as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in North Macedonia. Luis Díaz, Ben Doak, Wataru Endō, Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Núñez, Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, future red Giorgi Mamardashvili and ex-red Emre Can were all also in international action as Steve Clarke, Bernard Diomède and Rigobert Song all took charge of their countries. Also on the move 1998 - Ex-red Steve Nicol signed for Doncaster Rovers. He played 25 League games for them. 2008 - Robbie Fowler signed for Blackburn Rovers. He failed to score in six games as they struggled for form. On the same day, Steve Clarke resigned from Chelsea’s coaching staff, prior to joining West Ham United as First Team Coach three days later. 2009 – Reserves forward Michael Ngoo joined the reds from Southend United for a fee of up to £250,000. He was released in May 2014 without having reached the first team. 2012 – Head of Scouting Dave Fallows and Chief Scout Barry Hunter both started work. Meanwhile, left-back Grégory Vignal signed for Dundee United, but left two months later without having made a first-team appearance. 2017 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of his boyhood club Crystal Palace for the first time, leading them to 54 victories in 162 games in charge before leaving in May 2021. 2019 – Right-back Connor Randall signed for Bulgarian top-flight side Arda 1924 Kardzhali after eight senior appearances for the reds. 2022 – Keeper Loris Karius signed for Newcastle United, with his only appearance in his first campaign coming in the League Cup Final at Wembley. He joined the reds for £4.7m from 1. FSV Mainz 05 in July 2016, taking over the number one shirt. He made 49 first-team appearances, keeping 22 clean sheets but making several high-profile errors. Mixed fortunes against the Rams 1973 – Derby County beat us 3-1 at the Baseball Ground. Roger Davies bagged one of his five goals against the reds with Kevin Hector netting one of his four. Phil Boersma scored our goal, with Roy McFarland also on target for the home side. 1896 – Jimmy Methven put through his own net with Harry Bradshaw also netting as we beat Derby County 2-0 at Anfield, after Jack Robinson had saved a penalty from George Allan. Other reds games 1984 – Paul Walsh netted as we drew 1-1 at Manchester United. 1981 – We won 2-1 at Coventry City with Alan Kennedy bagging a rapid equaliser after we had fallen behind to a Gerry Daly goal in the first minute. Terry McDermott scored the winner from the spot as Bob Paisley reached 300 League games as reds boss. 1979 – Norwich City held us to a goalless draw at Anfield in Bob Paisley’s 300th game in charge in all competitions. 1973 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in L4. Martin Peters opened the scoring with one of his fourteen goals against the reds, before Chris Lawler equalised. Martin Chivers nabbed one of his seven goals past us. Pat Jennings saved a penalty from Emlyn Hughes but was judged to have left his line too early. Alec Lindsay converted the subsequent retake, with Chris Lawler netting the last-minute winner. 1956 – Dicky Robinson scored an own goal as we drew a Second Division encounter 1-1 at Middlesbrough, with Brian Clough bagging the first of his ten goals past us. 1923 – We lost 2-0 at Burnley. For the Dons 2004 - A match was staged between Wimbledon Old Boys and Liverpool Old Boys in aid of the AFC Wimbledon stadium fund. The game ended all square with the reds goal coming poetically from a John Aldridge penalty.

Four for Mo 2018 – Mohamed Salah struck four times as we thumped Watford 5-0 at Anfield, which included his first hat-trick for the club. Roberto Firmino was also on target. Didi’s belter 2004 - Dietmar Hamann’s goal at home to Portsmouth was later voted as Match Of The Day’s Goal of the Season. Michael Owen then added a brace as we won 3-0, with his first goal being our 500th under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. El-Hadji Diouf played his 75th reds game, and fiftieth in the League. Carra’s Euro record 2011 - Jamie Carragher played his 46th game in the UEFA Cup or UEFA Europa League, a new club record for this tournament under its several guises. We were held to a goalless draw by Sporting Clube de Braga at Anfield, having already lost the first leg in Portugal, with Pepe Reina playing his 300th reds game. Sadio again 2019 - Sadio Mané scored in his third consecutive game as we won 2-1 at Fulham. Ex-red Ryan Babel equalised for the home side before James Milner converted a late penalty to secure the win and send us back to the top of the table. Feliz aniversario 1983 – Portuguese midfielder Raúl Meireles was born in Porto. He signed from his hometown club for £11.5m in August 2010, bagging five goals in 44 matches, with all these strikes coming in a six-game spell since Kenny Dalglish’s return as Manager. He left for Chelsea in a £12m deal a year after arriving in L4. A short Euro trip 2016 – We held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie, to progress 3-1 on aggregate. Anthony Martial put the home side ahead from the spot before Philippe Coutinho bagged a stunning equaliser just before half time. Disappointment down the East Lancs 2024 – We lost our FA Cup Sixth Round tie 4-3 at Manchester United after extra time. Scott McTominay gave the home side an early lead, with Alexis MacAllister netting in his third consecutive game for the club and Mohamed Salah also on target before the break. Antony levelled shortly before full time, but Harvey Elliott restored our lead in extra time. Marcus Rashford bagged his seventh and most recent goal against us, before Amad Diallo struck the winner in stoppage time, before being dismissed for a second yellow card following his celebrations. Bobby Clark had come off the bench in extra time for his fourteenth and final reds appearance. More European memories 1965 - Our first continental game on this day was a goalless European Cup Third Round second leg match with 1. FC Köln, after the original meeting two weeks earlier had been postponed due to snow. The tie had to go to a third game, as both legs had finished without score. We eventually went through on a coin toss! 1976 - We beat Dynamo Dresden 2-1 in the UEFA Cup Fourth Round second leg at Anfield after a goalless first leg draw in East Germany, on our way to winning the trophy for the second time. Jimmy Case opened the scoring after hitting the bar, with Kevin Keegan also netting in what was Bill Shankly’s hundredth game in charge. 1982 - We lost 2-0 in Bulgaria to CSKA Sofia in the European Cup Third Round, having only won the first leg 1-0 at Anfield, although Ian Rush’s header after just two minutes appeared to cross the line, and we had two strong penalty appeals turned down. With twelve minutes remaining, Bruce Grobbelaar was caught in two minds about coming out for a ball, and Stoycho Mladenov nodded into an empty net. The game then went into extra time, and a deflected Mladenov shot evaded a host of reds defenders on the line to put CSKA ahead on aggregate. There was still time for both Ronnie Whelan and Mark Lawrenson to hit the woodwork, and Lawrenson was also sent off for retaliation, our first dismissal in European competition. On the way to Wembley 1986 - We won 2-1 at Watford in an FA Cup Sixth Round replay. John Barnes put the Hornets ahead from a free-kick, before Jan Mølby equalised from the spot in the 86th minute. Ian Rush sent us through in extra time, keeping us on course for the double. Thumping Boro 1906 - We beat Middlesbrough 6-1 with forward John Carlin grabbing his two final reds goals, and our other goals coming from Jack Cox, Arthur Goddard, Joe Hewitt and Jack Parkinson. Debutants 1894 – Inside-right John Givens scored on his reds bow in a 1-1 Second Division draw at Lincoln City, our first ever game on this day in history. Derby stalemate 1917 - We drew a Wartime League match at Goodison Park 2-2, with Thomas Bennett and Walter Wadsworth netting for the reds. Farewells 1902 – Club founder John Houlding died. 1956 – Winger Joe Dickson bagged his final two reds goals as we beat Swansea Town 4-1 at Anfield in a Second Division match. Billy Liddell and Eric Anderson also netted. Youngsters reach the Final 2006 - The reds reached the FA Youth Cup Final, beating Southampton in a penalty shoot-out after the tie had ended 4-4 after two legs. Happy birthdays 1956 - Frank McGarvey was born in Glasgow. He arrived from Celtic for £300,000 in May 1979 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. However, he never broke into the first-team at Anfield, moving back to Celtic for £270,000 in March 1980, becoming Scotland’s most expensive footballer. 1983 - Former reserves midfielder Neil Prince was born. He also failed to make the grade at Anfield, leaving for Torquay United on a free transfer in August 2002. Aldo sacked 2001 - John Aldridge was sacked as Manager of Tranmere Rovers after nearly five years in charge. He kept them in mid-table in the First Division until his final season, as well as leading them to the Worthington Cup Final in 2000 and the FA Cup Quarter-finals that same season. Off on loan 1993 - Bruce Grobbelaar joined Stoke City on loan. He played four games for the Potters, who were on their way to the Second Division title, before briefly returning to our first team at the expense of David James. 1997 - Ex-reds reserves forward Mike Newell joined Bradford City on loan from fellow First Division side Birmingham City. He made seven appearances for the Bantams, without getting on the scoresheet. 2011 – Future red Fabio Borini joined Swansea City from Chelsea. He struck six times in twelve goals while in South Wales as the Swans gained promotion to the top flight. International firsts 1900 – Ex-red Dan Cunliffe won his only England cap in their 2-0 defeat of Ireland in the British International Championships at Lansdowne Road. 1913 - Ernest Peake netted his only Welsh goal as they lost 4-3 to England in Bristol. 1923 - Jock McNab won his only cap in Scotland’s 2-0 defeat of Wales at St. Mirren. Other reds games 1973 – John Mahoney netted a spectacular own goal as we won 1-0 at Stoke City. 1962 – We were held to a 2-2 draw in a Second Division match at Leyton Orient with Alan A’Court nabbing a late double. 1951 – We beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at Anfield with Billy Liddell scoring direct from a free kick and then converting a penalty. 1928 – Cardiff City won 2-1 in L4 despite Tommy Reid giving us a half-time lead. Len Davies scored one of his seven goals against the reds, with Billy Thirlaway netting the winner. 1923 – We lost 1-0 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground. Horace Barnes struck one of his nine goals past us as we remained top of the table. 1900 – Tommy Robertson and Johnny Walker scored as we beat Newcastle United 2-0 at Anfield. Young future reds for England 1982 - Middlesbrough’s David Hodgson struck for England Under-21’s as they won 2-1 in Poland in a European Championship Finals Quarter-final. Steve McMahon, then playing across the park, also featured. Also in international action 1936 – Ex-red Jimmy Kelly played for the Irish Free State as they beat Switzerland 1-0 in a friendly in Dublin. 1977 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s as they won a friendly 23-1 in Denmark. 1993 – Roy Hodgson took charged of Switzerland as they won a friendly 1-0 in Tunisia. 1999 – Future red Milan Baroš featured as the Czech Republic Under-18’s beat Poland 3-1 in a friendly. 2010 – Future red Suso played as Spain Under-17’s thumped Northern Ireland 4-0.

Off the mark 1959 - Winger Johnny Morrissey nabbed his first reds goal as we suffered a 2-1 Second Division defeat at Sheffield United when we conceded two penalties inside three minutes, both converted by Graham Shaw. 1928 - We also faced the Blades, losing our top-flight meeting at Anfield 2-1, with Dick Edmed nabbing our consolation. Scottish-born South African international left-back Jimmy Gray played his only reds game. Fred Tunstall bagged one of his eight goals past us, with Thomas Boyle also on target. Deano not guilty 1992 - We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield, our most recent game on this day in history. Dean Saunders, who headed us in front, injured Paul Elliott in a challenge that ended his career, for which Deano was later unsuccessfully sued. Jamie Redknapp netted our last-minute winner after Mick Harford’s equaliser, the last of his six goals past us, while this was Saunders’ 61st and final reds game before moving to Aston Villa. 1908 - We also beat the Blues at Anfield by the same score, when Ronald Orr grabbed a brace and George Hilsdon bagged one of his five goals against the reds. A refereeing record 1896 - Referee C.E. Sutcliffe disallowed six goals in our First Division match at Blackburn Rovers, still a League record. He only permitted one strike to count, unfortunately scored by Rovers’ Jim Stuart. Inside-forward Willie Michael made his debut as a replacement for Harry Bradshaw who was “suffering from an old injury to his ear.” Debutants galore 1903 - Sydney Smith scored on his reds debut, although we lost 2-1 at Nottingham Forest in our season opener, with forward Fred Buck and right-back John Chadburn also making their reds bows. Grenville Morris netted one of his six goals past us, with Alf Spouncer also on target. 1967 - We travelled to the City Ground again, with Emlyn Hughes bagging the only goal of the game, as Gerry Byrne played his 300th reds game. 1934 - Centre-half Norman Low debuted in our 2-1 home win over Manchester City, deputising for Tom Bradshaw. Sam English and Gordon Hodgson netted our goals, with the latter missing his first spot-kick for the reds, while Fred Tilson struck one of his six goals against us. Nice one Cyril 1942 - Cyril Done bagged a treble as we beat Wrexham 4-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Dickie Dorsett struck the other. Red departures 1895 – Scottish outside-right Neil Kerr was sold to Nottingham Forest after three goals in twelve outings since arriving from Rangers in June 1894. 1980 – Left-back Brian Kettle moved on to Wigan Athletic. He signed for the reds in May 1973 but only made four senior appearances as his route to the first-team was blocked first by Alec Lindsay, then Joey Jones and Alan Kennedy. An Addicks first 1936 - Charlton Athletic played their first ever home game in the First Division as we held them to a 1-1 draw at The Valley, with Alf Hanson on the scoresheet. Off the mark 2020 – Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg both bagged their first reds goals as we thumped Blackpool 7-2 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Anfield. Joël Matip, Sadio Mané, Roberto Firmino, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi all also got on the scoresheet. Rare reds 1953 – Inside-forward Harold Jones made his only senior appearance in our 5-1 thumping at Anfield by Preston North End.
