Bells rung out 2007 - Craig Bellamy was sold to West Ham United for £7.5m, the record fee paid by the Irons until Andy Carroll took the same path for £15.5m in June 2013. He had arrived from Blackburn Rovers for £6m in June 2006 and was only a partial success in his first spell, grabbing nine goals in 42 games, with his finest moment coming in the Camp Nou as he scored a crucial goal in our 2-1 victory to help us progress towards Athens. On the same day, reserves midfielder Danny Guthrie joined Bolton Wanderers on loan. He made 35 senior appearances for the Trotters, netting just once, in his debut in a 2-1 League Cup Third Round victory at Fulham. Birth and death 1984 - Left-winger Mark González was born in Durban in South Africa. The Chilean international signed from Albacete Balompié for £1.5m in October 2005, although he was not granted a work permit until the following July. Reds firsts 2001 - We faced Bayer 04 Leverkusen in a pre-season friendly in Lustenau, Austria, winning 3-2 thanks to a late deflected Jamie Redknapp free-kick, with strike pairing Michael Owen and Emile Heskey also netting. He struck nine times in 106 games in all before moving to MK Dons in June 2011. 2008 – Winger Mark Kennedy signed for Cardiff City, having been released by Crystal Palace. He failed to score in 79 outings as they twice narrowly missed out on promotion, before joining Ipswich Town for £75,000 in July 2010, where he is now Under-21’s Manager. 2004 - Rigobert Song joined Galatasaray from Racing Club de Lens for £1m, helping them to two League titles and the Turkish Cup before joining Trabzonspor in 2008. One-nil down, two-one up 2001 - Michael Owen won the cup! A glorious day in our recent history saw us clinch the FA Cup in Cardiff, the second leg of the treble, despite going behind to a Freddie Ljungberg goal after surviving repeated Arsenal attacks, sometimes through dubious means! Two late, late Michael Owen goals won us the cup, and the Millennium Stadium was awash with overjoyed reds. This was the first time we had won an FA Cup Final while wearing an away kit. Clinching three in a row 1984 - We clinched our fifteenth League title by holding Notts County to a goalless draw at Meadow Lane. This was our third consecutive championship, and the second part of a glorious treble claimed by Joe Fagan in his first season in charge. Left-back Alan Kennedy was playing his 300th reds game. Inter trouble 1965 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the European Cup as we lost 3-0 at Internazionale, going out at the Semi-final stage 4-3 on aggregate. The match was highly controversial with Inter’s first goal coming direct from a contentiously-awarded indirect free-kick, and the second coming after the ball was kicked out of Tommy Lawrence’s hands. Ian St. John also had a goal mysteriously disallowed. Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran played his 379th and final reds game in this match. Finishing second 2019 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield to secure a club record 97 points, a total only bettered twice in top-flight history, including Manchester City who ended the day on 98. Sadio Mané struck twice to end the campaign on 22 goals, sharing the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Alisson Becker kept his 21st League clean sheet of the season to claim the Golden Glove with a total only bettered once in Premier League history. Danny at the treble 2013 – Daniel Sturridge bagged his only reds hat-trick as we won 3-1 at Fulham, with Jonjo Shelvey playing his 69th and last reds game. Dimitar Berbatov had put the home side in front with the last of his five goals past us. Managers rewarded 2011 - Kenny Dalglish was re-appointed Manager permanently, leading us to a League Cup triumph at Wembley and 36 wins in 74 games until being sacked a year later. First-team coach Steve Clarke signed a new three-year contract on the same day. 2014 - Brendan Rodgers was named as LMA Manager of the Year after leading the reds to a second-place finish in the League. Beaten in Manchester 1969 - We lost at reigning champions Manchester City, our only other first-class game on this day over the years. Francis Lee struck the only goal of the game, one of his six past us. 1923 – We lost the Lancashire Senior Cup Final 1-0 to City at Bolton Wanderers’ Burnden Park. The English silent knight 1971 - Chris Lawler scored on his full international debut as England thumped Malta 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Wembley. Clubmate Emlyn Hughes also played. 1992 – Future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron won his first cap for England Under-21’s as they drew a friendly 2-2 in Hungary. Captain Clem 1981 - Ray Clemence captained England for the only time, in their 1-0 friendly defeat by Brazil at Wembley. Terry McDermott and Phil Neal both also played. Happy birthdays 1996 – Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas was born in Thessaloniki. He signed from Olympiacos for an initial £11.75m in August 2020, playing 59 reds games before his 27th birthday, with his decisive spot-kick securing the FA Cup at Wembley in May 2022. 1900 - Defender Bert Shears was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He played sixteen reds games without notching after arriving from Aberdare Athletic in September 1924, moving to Tranmere Rovers in May 1930. Three for Davey 1978 - David Fairclough scored a hat-trick as we drew 5-5 with Bolton Wanderers in a testimonial for ex-red Peter Thompson at Burnden Park. Toffee Duncan Mackenzie added a brace while guesting for the reds. Taylor on target again 1945 - Future reds boss Phil Taylor scored in his third consecutive game, bagging a brace as we trounced Oldham Athletic 7-0 in a Wartime League match at Boundary Park. Bill Kinghorn, George Paterson, Jack Westby, Jack Pilling and Berry Nieuwenhuys also struck. Reg signs on 1959 - Forward Reginald Bore signed a professional contract. He only made one senior appearance for the reds, later that year aged just seventeen, going on to enjoy much greater success at Oldham Athletic, for whom he made over 200 League appearances in midfield. Departures 1911 – Keeper Augustus Beeby left for Manchester City. He joined the club in December 1908, but only made sixteen senior appearances. 1937 – Forward Jimmy Collins was sold to Cardiff City, for whom he bagged forty goals in 75 League outings. Red trebles 1964 - Ian St. John scored three in a 6-1 First Division win over Sheffield United at Anfield. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Peter Thompson also on the scoresheet. 1913 - Arthur Metcalf bagged a treble in our first ever FA Cup meeting with the Gunners, then known as Woolwich Arsenal. We won 4-1 at the Manor Ground to reach the Third Round, with Billy Lacey also on target. Unfortunately, we went out to Newcastle United at the next hurdle. 1975 - We also faced Arsenal, losing a top-flight encounter 2-0 at Highbury as Alan Ball netted two of his eleven goals against the reds. John Toshack reached a century of League appearances for us that day. Hunting a new record 1969 - Roger Hunt bagged the only goal of the game against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield, taking him past Gordon Hodgson to become our all-time record scorer in the League with 234, still a club record. Setting another record 2020 - The reds beat Southampton 4-0 to Anfield to ensure that we defeated all our opponents in a top-flight League season for the first time, although the score was goalless at half time. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring, before Jordan Henderson netted and Mohamed Salah added a brace. This ensured we had a 22-point lead at the top of the table, the greatest ever at the end of a day of top-flight football. On the same day, former reds Assistant Manager Željko Buvac was appointed Sporting Director of Dynamo Moskva. Robbie’s return 2006 - Robbie Fowler came off the bench to make his first appearance in his second spell with the reds, shortly after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring in our home Premiership meeting with Birmingham City. Robbie even had a late winner correctly ruled out for offside, while Daniel Agger made his reds bow in a game that was Rafael Benítez’s hundredth in charge. Damien Johnson was sent off for the visitors, who equalised through a Xabi Alonso own goal in the dying minutes to deny us a club record eleventh consecutive clean sheet. Nando off the mark 2005 - We won 2-1 at Charlton Athletic thanks to Fernando Morientes’ first reds goal and a John Arne Riise strike, as we came from behind, with ex-red Danny Murphy taking the corner that led to Shaun Bartlett’s opener. Jamie Carragher played his 241st League game for the reds, a club Premiership record, while Vladimír Šmicer came on as a late substitute for Morientes to make his first appearance of the season. Spackman sold 1989 - Nigel Spackman was sold to Queens Park Rangers for £500,000 after losing his place to Ronnie Whelan. He had made 63 first-team appearances without scoring, winning a League title medal in his one full season at Anfield. Up against the Blues 1992 - We lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea, with Ronnie Rosenthal netting for the reds after Vinnie Jones had put the visitors in front. Rosenthal then hit the bar when clean through before Dennis Wise put the Blues ahead again with one of his four goals past us, with Bruce Grobbelaar saving a late spot-kick taken by Wise. Graeme Souness received his Manager of the Month award prior to the game as we suffered our first defeat in fourteen League fixtures. This was Chelsea’s first League win at Anfield since December 1935. 2009 – Frank Lampard was sent off as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield thanks to two late Fernando Torres goals to secure our 200th win in the Premier League, after Xabi Alonso had hit the crossbar. José Bosingwa amazingly escaped punishment for an assault on Yossi Benayoun right in front of the assistant referee in stoppage time. Alf off the mark 1933 – Outside-right Alf Hanson bagged the first of his 52 reds goals as Middlesbrough won 3-1 at Anfield. George Camsell netted two of his nine goals past us, with Harold Blackmore bagging the last of his five against the reds. Forward Ted Hancock played his tenth and last reds game. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag 1972 - Christian Ziege was born in Berlin. He signed in controversial circumstances from Middlesbrough in August 2000 for £5.5m and netted twice in 32 reds games, leaving Anfield for Tottenham Hotspur after just one year having won a Worthington Cup winner’s medal. He also won the Bundesliga twice, the UEFA Cup and Serie A during his club playing career, as well as Euro ’96 with Germany. 1952 – Full-back John Webb was born in Liverpool. He joined the reds in February 1969, making it onto the first-team bench six times in 1972/73 without making a senior appearance. He moved on to Tranmere Rovers in 1974, later playing in Belgium, the Netherlands and North America. 1937 - Keeper Tony Waiters was born in Southport. He won five senior England caps in 1964 while playing for Blackpool. He left there in 1967 to take on a coaching role with the reds, but returned to playing with Burnley in 1970, playing 38 League games before becoming the Manager of Plymouth Argyle in 1972. 1886 – Full-back Harry Griffiths was born in Middlesbrough. He joined the reds in 1905 but only played six senior games before joining Chesterfield Town in June 1908. He later linked up with ex-red Maurice Parry and Alex Raisbeck at Partick Thistle. Ton up for Jim 1908 - Left-half Jim Bradley made his hundredth reds appearance as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup Second Round, with Jack Cox heading in our equaliser late on after right-half Maurice Parry had conceded a penalty converted by Jack Hall. The visitors appealed in vain that reds keeper Sam Hardy had carried the ball over the line before scrambling it round the post. This was the first game in which Anfield’s new grandstand, where the Main Stand is today, was used. More red beginnings 1902 – Inside-forward Tommy Green made the first of his seven senior reds appearances in our goalless top-flight draw at Bury, while inside-left Bill White played for the sixth and last time. 2018 – Midfielder Curtis Jones signed for the reds as a professional. He made his senior debut in our FA Cup Third Round defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2019, netting his first reds goal to secure a derby win at Anfield at the same stage a year later. He has struck sixteen times in 133 reds games across his first six campaigns, so far helping us to claim the Premier League title and FA Community Shield. Reds farewells 2014 – Forward Tony Hateley died in Preston after a long illness. He became our record signing when he joined from Chelsea in July 1967 for £96,000 and got off to a flyer at Anfield, grabbing 27 goals in 52 appearances in his first season. Unfortunately, injuries took their toll, and he was sold to Coventry City only fourteen months after arriving at the club, after 28 goals in 56 outings in total. 1997 - Stan Collymore scored the only goal of the game at Derby County, our last ever visit to the Baseball Ground. The home side’s Daryl Powell was sent off at the beginning of the second period. 1958 – We lost 1-0 to Leyton Orient in a Second Division fixture at Brisbane Road, with forward Tony Rowley playing his 63rd and last reds game. 1947 – Albert Stubbins struck twice as we won 2-1 at Leeds United as outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys played his 257th and last game for the club. 1900 – Forward Peter Kyle played his fifth and last game as we beat Stoke 1-0 in an FA Cup First Round replay at Anfield, thanks to an early John ‘Sailor’ Hunter goal. On the losing side We have suffered seven defeats in our fourteen League games on this day over the years. 1936 – We lost 6-1 at West Bromwich Albion, their record win over the reds. Jack Balmer grabbed our consolation, while Billy ‘Ginger’ Richardson netted a hat-trick for the Baggies, three of his nine goals against the reds. Stan Wood bagged two of his five against us, with Jack Mahon scoring the last of his four past us. Forward Jimmy Collins made his reds bow in this game. 1986 - Our 2-1 defeat at Ipswich Town, with both Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush absent, helped lift Everton to the top of the table that day, although we still managed to claim the title at the end of the season. Ronnie Whelan was on target that day. Beating the Hornets We have twice seen off Watford at Anfield on this day in history. 1967 - Ian St. John, Roger Hunt and Chris Lawler struck past ex-red Bert Slater as we won an FA Cup Third Round replay 3-1 as we went on to be knocked out by Everton two rounds later that year. 1984 - We secured a 3-0 League victory thanks to goals from Ian Rush, Steve Nicol and Ronnie Whelan. Two cups on the same day 1982 - We claimed two trophies - the old Football League Cup and the new Milk Cup trophy. Tottenham Hotspur went ahead at Wembley early on through Steve Archibald, one of his six goals past us, but Ronnie Whelan grabbed a late equaliser past ex-red Ray Clemence, before netting a second in extra time. Skipper Graeme Souness lifted the old three-handled trophy, while former captain Phil Thompson held the new Milk Cup aloft. Stevie’s derby treble 2012 - Steven Gerrard scored a hat-trick past Everton at Anfield in his 400th League game as we won 3-0, with his third goal being the club’s 300th derby goal. Visiting boss David Moyes was hours from celebrating his tenth anniversary as their Manager, still without having tasted victory at Anfield. On our way to Wembley 1988 - An FA Cup game brought us our best ever result on this day, as we won 4-0 on a muddy pitch at Manchester City in the Sixth Round in front of the live TV cameras, on our way to the Final. Ray Houghton, Craig Johnston and John Barnes all netted, to add to a Peter Beardsley penalty, with Johnston’s strike being our 500th in the competition. This was our seventh consecutive away victory, and the tenth time we had bagged four in a game that season. 1915 - We also beat City when inside-forward Arthur Metcalf nabbed his 28th and last goal for the club. Fred Pagnam and Tom Miller also struck in a 3-2 First Division win at Anfield as centre-half Bob Ferguson played his 103rd and final reds game. Horace Barnes bagged one of his nine goals past us, with Fred Howard netting the last of his nine against the reds, in just five outings. Heading towards Madrid 2019 – We won 3-1 at Bayern München in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie, following the goalless first game at Anfield.
