Steven Gerrard made the score 4-1 before Ryan Babel bagged a late brace, with the second fortuitously deflecting off his ankle and looping over the keeper. 1964 - Bobby Graham bagged a treble on his League debut as we beat Aston Villa 5-1 at Anfield, with Ian Callaghan and Roger Hunt also on target. Future red Tony Hateley struck for the visitors. 1925 - Dick Forshaw scored a hat-trick as we thumped Everton 5-1 at Anfield, with Jimmy Walsh on target and Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers netting his hundredth League goal. In fact, Forshaw added a brace in the Goodison return the following February as we drew 3-3. 1945 – We also hosted the Blues, being held to a 1-1 draw after extra time in a Lancashire Senior Cup First Round replay, with Jack Balmer converting a spot-kick for the reds. Youngest ever 2012 – Forward Jerome Sinclair became our youngest every player, aged sixteen years and six days, when he came off the bench in our 2-1 Capital One Cup Third Round win at West Bromwich Albion. Loanee midfielder Nuri Şahin struck his first two reds goals after we fell behind to a Gabriel Tamaș goal, thanks to an error by keeper Brad Jones. Samed Yeşil also made his reds bow as we secured a club record sixth consecutive away win in the League Cup. Off the mark 1931 - Right-half Ted Savage scored his only two goals on his reds bow, as a forward, as we beat Grimsby Town 4-0 in a First Division fixture at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson also netting a brace. 2015 – James Milner opened the scoring with his first reds goal as we beat Aston Villa 3-2 at Anfield. Daniel Sturridge scored twice with Villa’s Rudy Gestede also bagging a brace. Shanks suffers 1981 - Bill Shankly suffered a heart-attack, sadly dying three days later. On the same day, we drew 1-1 at West Ham United, with David Johnson heading in our equaliser after Geoff Pike had given the home side the lead. In Euro action We have played five European ties on this day, winning two and drawing the others. 2017 – Roberto Firmino reached a century of reds games as we drew 1-1 in a UEFA Champions League game at Spartak Moskva. Philippe Coutinho scored our goal. 2001 - A Jari Litmanen goal, in the team due to an injury to Michael Owen, was enough to see off Dynamo Kyiv in a Champions League group game at Anfield. Nick Barmby also struck a post. 1996 - We beat Finnish side Myllykosken Pallo-47 3-1 in a European Cup Winners’ Cup match, with Patrik Berger, Stan Collymore and John Barnes on target, as we progressed 4-1 on aggregate. 1972 - We survived a siege to hold Eintracht Frankfurt to a goalless draw in West Germany to reach the Second Round of the UEFA Cup thanks to a 2-0 first leg win. 1995 - We reached the same stage of that competition, despite not being able to break down Russians Spartak-Alania Vladikavkaz at Anfield, as the game ended without score, although Michael Thomas had a goal disallowed for offside. However, our 2-1 away win was enough to take us through. Alec goes the wrong way 1970 - Left-back Alec Lindsay scored an own goal to condemn us to a 1-0 defeat at Southampton. Three failures against the Baggies We have faced West Bromwich Albion in the top flight on three occasions on this day in history, without managing a win. 1896 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1903 - We lost 3-1 at home, with Jack Cox grabbing our consolation. Defender Herbert Craik played his only ever reds game while George Dorsett struck one of his five goals past us, with Fred Hobson and Charlie Simmons also on target. 1914 - We were thumped 4-0 at The Hawthorns, with Alf Bentley netting the last two of his four goals against the reds, with Fred Morris also nabbing a brace. Forward Bob McDougall played his eighth and last reds game. Most recently 2018 – We lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea in the Third Round of the EFL Cup. Ex-Blue Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring after an hour, but Emerson and Eden Hazard both struck late on as we fell to defeat for the first time that season, with this being the sixth of Hazard’s seven goals past us. From the spot 1992 - Jan Mølby converted our first Anfield penalty in the Premier League as we lost 3-2 to Wimbledon, with Steve McManaman netting after a Ronnie Rosenthal strike came back off the bar. We came from two goals behind to go in level at the break, but Robbie Earle bagged the winner with his second of the game, the first two of his five goals past us, with Dons skipper John Fashanu opening the scoring with one of his six strikes against the reds. Hungarian midfielder István Kozma played his tenth and final reds game. Olympic defeat 2000 - Brad Friedel was on the losing side as Spain beat the USA 3-1 in the Semi-final of the Sydney Olympics. International red saint 1961 - Ian St. John won his first cap as a red, and his eighth for Scotland in total. He scored in their 3-2 World Cup qualifying defeat of Czechoslovakia at Hampden Park. 1973 - The same fixture was played, this time as a qualifier for the Finals in West Germany. Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish played in the Scots’ 2-1 win. Emlyn Hughes featured on the same day as England trounced Austria 7-0 in a friendly at Wembley Stadium. 2009 – Martin Kelly featured for England Under-20’s as they lost 1-0 to future red Sebastián Coates’ Uruguay in the World Championship Finals in Egypt. Danny’s last 2011 – Future red Danny Ward won his third and last cap for Wales Under-19’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 3-2 in Slovenia. Defeat to the Mancs 1908 - Jack Cox netted to add to an Alex Raisbeck penalty as we lost 3-2 to Manchester United at their old Bank Street ground. Harold Halse bagged the first two of his four goals against us, with Jimmy Turnbull netting the last of his six. A real trouncing 1953 - We suffered our worst ever defeat at Charlton Athletic as we were thumped 6-0. We were relegated that season after finishing bottom of the table. Right-back Bert Childs played his second and final reds game as future red John Evans netted the last two of his five goals past us, with South African centre-forward Stuart Leary bagging four of his six strikes against the reds. Other reds game 1959 – We beat Plymouth Argyle 4-1 in a Second Division meeting at Anfield thanks to goals from Jimmy Melia, Alan A’Court, Roger Hunt and Ronnie Moran. Zico junior heads south 1996 - Reserves defender Ashley Neal joined Third Division Brighton & Hove Albion on loan. Phil Neal’s son made four starts for the Seagulls, all ending in defeat. Nuri on target 2005 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin scored as Turkey Under-17’s thrashed China 51 in their World Cup Quarter-final in Peru. Also in international action 1984 – Jan Mølby played as Denmark beat Norway 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Copenhagen. On the same day, future red Glenn Hysén featured in Sweden’s 1-0 friendly defeat by Italy in Milan. 2001 – Robbie Foy played for Scotland Under-17’s in their 3-0 friendly win in Wales. 2003 – Roy Hodgson took charge of the United Arab Emirates as they lost 4-1 to Bahrain in Dubai. 2009 – Martin Kelly featured for England Under-20’s as they lost 1-0 to future red Sebastián Coates’ Uruguay in the World Championship Finals in Egypt. 2022 – Bobby Clark, Jordan Henderson, ex-reds Péter Gulácsi, Yasser Larouci and Raheem Sterling and future reds Giorgi Mamardashvili and Dominik Szoboszlai all played for their countries. Goalscoring feats at St. James’ Park 1987 - Steve Nicol grabbed a hat-trick in our 4-1 win at Newcastle United in front of the live TV cameras, following John Aldridge’s opener, who also had another strike disallowed for offside. Neil McDonald converted from the spot for the home side. 1961 - Right-half Gordon Milne scored his first reds goal to help us to a 2-1 Second Division win there, with our other score coming from a George Heslop own goal. Kevin Lewis had a penalty saved by United keeper Dave Hollins, while centre-half Dick White played his 200th game for the club. Dirk off the mark 2006 - Dirk Kuyt grabbed his first reds goal, and 150th career strike to date, which was also our fiftieth Premier League strike against Newcastle United. We won 2-0 at Anfield, with Luis García playing his hundredth reds game. Xabi Alonso spectacularly scored from inside his own half, the second time he had managed that feat for the reds that year. Quick-fire Billy 1958 - Billy Liddell scored after sixteen seconds, with Ronnie Moran putting through his own net to level the score at Bristol City in our Second Division meeting. He added another in the second half, with wing-half Bobby Campbell grabbing the first of his two reds goals as we won 3-1. This was Liddell’s third brace in six games. Barney Rubble departs 1985 - Left-back Alan Kennedy was sold to Sunderland for £100,000. He is best remembered for his winning strikes in two European Cup Finals, but also won five League titles, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after moving from Newcastle United for £330,000 in August 1978, netting twenty times in 359 appearances. Off the mark 2015 – Substitute Danny Ings bagged his first reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Norwich City, with Lucas Leiva playing his 200th League game for the club. Unfortunately, Russell Martin capitalised on a Simon Mignolet error to equalise. Happy birthdays 1922 - Left-back Eddie Spicer was born in Garston, Liverpool. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving with the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to score twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 1895 - Full-back Tommy Lucas was born in St. Helens. He signed from Alexandra Victoria in 1916 and played 366 reds games, netting three times, winning one League title and captaining England in his time at Anfield. He moved on to Clapton Orient in July 1933. 2003 – Midfielder James Balagizi was born in Manchester. He signed pro terms in September 2020, having joined as an Under-11 from Manchester City. A wise move 2012 – Defender Andre Wisdom netted his only goal for the club on his reds bow as we won our UEFA Europa League group game 5-3 at BSC Young Boys, with winger Oussama Assaidi and midfielder Suso also debuting. Juhani Ojala scored an own goal after just three minutes, with Wisdom nodding us back in front after an equaliser from Raphael Nuzzolo. Ojala and then Gonzalo Zárate struck after the break to turn the game around, before Sebastián Coates headed us level, with substitute Jonjo Shelvey bagging a brace to secure victory. Thiago’s bow 2020 - Thiago Alcântara debuted as we won 2-0 behind closed doors at Chelsea, with Andreas Christensen sent off for the home side on the stroke of half time. Sadio Mané bagged a brace early in the second half, with Alisson Becker later saving a penalty from Jorginho. East end despair 2014 – We lost 3-1 at West Ham United, with Winston Reid and Diafra Sakho putting the Irons two up inside the first ten minutes, with ex-red Stewart Downing effectively man-marking Steven Gerrard. Raheem Sterling struck past future red Adrián to give the reds hope, but Morgan Amalfitano completed the scoring late on. This meant we set a new club record of scoring in seventeen consecutive away games in the top flight, a record that eventually stopped at eighteen. Happy birthday Jerome 1996 – Forward Jerome Sinclair was born in Birmingham. He arrived from West Bromwich Albion’s Academy aged fourteen in the summer of 2011, becoming our youngest ever player in September 2012, aged sixteen years and six days, when he featured in a League Cup Third Round tie at his old club. He eventually struck once in five senior appearances before he moved to Watford for £4m in June 2016. Out-foxed again 2003 - Michael Owen netted from the spot before Emile Heskey struck the winner against his old club Leicester City at Anfield for the third consecutive season as we won 2-1, with Marcus Bent bagging a very late consolation for the visitors. Disappointment at The Dell 1986 - Kevin MacDonald broke his leg shortly after coming on as a substitute as we lost 2-1 at Southampton, with Steve McMahon equalising after David Armstrong opened the scoring with the last of his four goals against the reds. However, Glenn Cockerill struck the winner for the Saints. 1980 - Graeme Souness and David Fairclough netted as we drew 2-2, with Phil Neal missing a penalty. Avi Cohen was heavily criticised in the Israeli press for playing on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. 1997 - We also drew on the south coast, with Karl-Heinz Riedle nabbing our goal before Kevin Davies equalised with the first of his four strikes past us as centre-half Mark Wright played his 210th and final game for the reds. A milestone day at Old Trafford 2004 - We lost 2-1 at Manchester United, as we benefited from a John O’Shea own goal, sandwiched between a Mikael Silvestre brace for the home side. Steven Gerrard broke a bone in his foot in front of 67,857, the largest crowd to watch the reds in the Premier League to that point. This was our 2,000th away League match, and 4,000th League game overall, as United reached 200 League goals against us, with keeper Jerzy Dudek playing his hundredth reds game, and Ryan Giggs appearing for the 600th time for United. 1893 - We had previously visited United, playing Newton Heath as they were then known in a friendly at Bank Street. Patrick Gordon, Hugh McQueen and Malcolm McVean all struck as we won 3-0. Centenary defeat 1988 - We lost 2-1 at Arsenal in the Mercantile Credit Centenary Trophy, staged to celebrate a hundred years of the Football League. Perry Groves opened the scoring in the first half with Steve Staunton bagging a late equaliser with his first reds goal, but Brian Marwood struck the winner. Charlie Boyd sat on our bench for one of only two times, on his nineteenth birthday. Derby joy 1913 - Billy Lacey struck a brace as we beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park in a First Division meeting, to secure our first win of the season in our fourth fixture. Full-back Sam Speakman made the first of his 26 reds appearances in this game. 2016 – Centre-half Ragnar Klavan opened the scoring with his first reds goal as we won 3-0 at Derby County in a League Cup Third Round match, as midfielder Ovie Ejaria and keeper Loris Karius made their debuts. Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi both scored after the break. Bill begins 1924 – Defender Bill Cockburn played the first of his 67 reds games as we held Bury to a goalless draw at Gigg Lane in a top-flight meeting. Mixed fortunes against the Villains We have faced Aston Villa three times in the top flight on this day in history, winning twice. 1975 - John Toshack bagged his fiftieth League goal for the club with Kevin Keegan and Jimmy Case also netting in the final half hour as we won 3-0 at home. 1919 - Dick Forshaw bagged the only goal of the game at Villa Park to hand us victory, which was the first of his 124 reds strikes. 1930 - Gordon Hodgson struck a brace as we lost 4-2 in the Midlands. Eric Houghton scored the first of his six goals against the reds, with George Brown netting one of his nine, Billy Walker one of his five past us, and Tom Waring nabbing the first of his six. Three times against the Potters 2008 - We were held to a goalless draw by Stoke City at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard having a legitimate second-minute free-kick strike ruled out. 1969 - We saw off the Potters 3-1 at home, with Emlyn Hughes on target in his hundredth League game for the reds. Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan also struck in our tenth consecutive League defeat of Stoke in what was Bill Shankly’s 500th game in charge of the reds. 1902 - Leigh Roose struck through the wrong net in the second minute as were held to a 1-1 top-flight draw by Stoke in L4. Beattie beaten 1983 - Andy Beattie died, aged seventy. He guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff. He managed a host of clubs as well as the Scotland national side, working with Bill Shankly at Huddersfield Town, having played alongside him at Preston North End. Young Englanders 1983 - Future red Paul Walsh grabbed a brace as England Under-21’s beat their Danish counterparts 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Carrow Road. Ex-red Dave Watson and future red Mark Walters both made their debuts in this game, while fellow future red Mark Wright also played. 2003 - Michael Foley-Sheridan and David Raven both played for their countries at Under-19’s level in European Championships qualifiers, with the latter making his debut for England at this level. The Republic of Ireland trounced San Marino 10-1 in Serravalle, while England beat Liechtenstein 2-0 in Moscow. 2010 – Samed Yeşil scored his first goal for Germany Under-17’s as they drew a friendly 2-2 with Italy in Elversberg with fellow future red Emre Can also featuring. 1950 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played for an England World Cup XI against the FA Canadian Touring Team in the FA Charity Shield at Stamford Bridge, with England winning 4-2. Reds aiming to go to Italy 1978 - Phil Neal scored his third goal in four England games as they won 4-3 in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark. Emlyn Hughes skippered a side that also included Ray Clemence and ex-red Kevin Keegan, who netted twice. On the same day, Steve Heighway and future red Mark Lawrenson both played in the first ever senior international between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, at Lansdowne Road. Meanwhile, Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness both appeared for Scotland in their 3-2 win in Austria, as they too opened their campaign to qualify for the finals in Italy. Nice one Cyril 1941 - Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we beat Manchester City 4-2 in a Wartime League game at Anfield, with Dickie Dorsett netting the other. Twice against the Trotters 1897 – Forward Dan Cunliffe bagged a brace with John McCartney also on target as we beat Bolton Wanderers 3-1 in a friendly at Anfield. 1947 - The Trotters returned for a First Division fixture, with the game this time ending goalless. Jameo saves 1995 - David James saved a penalty from Michael Gray as we beat Sunderland 2-0 in a League Cup Second Round first leg match at Anfield, thanks to goals from Steve McManaman and substitute Michael Thomas. Fabs at the Olympics 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they beat Japan 1-0 in an Olympics match in Brisbane. Only cap 1989 – Future reds goalkeeping coach José Ochotorena won his only cap in Spain’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Poland in A Coruña. On the move 2013 – Argentine ex-reserves midfielder Gerardo Bruna signed for Spanish Segunda División B side S.D. Huesca, netting once in seventeen outings during his one season there. 2016 – Former Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was sacked as Head Coach of Valencia, having only been in charge for three months. 2021 – Centre-half Terence Miles, the nephew of former Academy forward John Miles, turned pro with the reds, having arrived at Under-7’s level. On the same day, Harry Kewell was sacked as Manager of National League side Barnet, having lost five and drawn two of his seven games in charge. Other reds game 1952 – We beat Middlesbrough 4-1 at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne, Jack Smith, Bryan Williams and Kevin Baron all on target. Also in international action 2018 - Future red Mateusz Musiałowski played for Poland Under-16’s in their 3-1 defeat of the Czech Republic. 2006 – Future red Astrit Ajdarević appeared for Sweden Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Liechtenstein in a European Championships qualifier in Greece. 2005 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin plated for Turkey Under-17’s as they beat Uruguay 3-2 in a World Cup Finals group game in Peru. 2001 - Future reds Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres faced each other in the Under-17’s World Championship Finals in Trinidad, with Argentina beating Spain 4-2. 1988 - Future red goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared as Brazil beat Australia 3-0 in an Olympics Finals group game in South Korea. 1977 – Joey Jones and John Toshack both featured as Wales drew a friendly 0-0 in Kuwait. -
Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 2001 – Midfielder Jake Cain was born in Wigan. He signed as a professional in September 2019, making his only senior appearance in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020. He moved on to Swindon Town in January 2023. Spurs stuffed 1978 - Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst ever Anfield defeat, despite including their new World Cup winners, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Kenny Dalglish and substitute David Johnson both grabbed a brace, added to by Ray Kennedy and a twice-taken Phil Neal penalty, before Terry McDermott rounded off a brilliant team move to make it 7-0. Into the League 1893 - We played our first ever game in the Football League, winning 2-0 at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Forward Malcolm McVean scored our first ever League goal after an hour, with centre-half Joe McQue nabbing the other. James Henderson played his only senior reds game, while winger Patrick Gordon and forward Jimmy Stott also made their debuts in this game. This was also the first ever League game staged at the Paradise Ground. A busy day 2013 – A whole host of transfers took place on deadline day, with forward Fabio Borini joining Sunderland on loan, while ex-reds left-back Andrea Dossena also signed for the Black Cats on a free transfer from Rafael Benítez’s SSC Napoli. Two centre-halves arrived at Anfield, with Mamadou Sakho arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for £15m and Tiago Ilori signing from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £7m. On the same day, winger Victor Moses arrived on loan from Chelsea with Dani Pacheco leaving the reds to sign for Spanish side AD Alcorcón. He struck seven times in nineteen reds games after signing as a professional in May 1957, as we struggled in the Second Division. 1994 - John Scales signed from Wimbledon for £3.5m. He struck four times in 94 games in his two years at Anfield, before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £2.6m in December 1996. On the same day, Paul Stewart joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. He scored twice in ten appearances for Wolves, and later joined Burnley and Sunderland on loan, having slipped out of the first team picture at Anfield. 2014- Cameroon-born centre-back Stephen Sama left the reds to sign for VfB Stuttgart having failed to make a senior appearance since arriving from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in July 2009. 2015 – The capture of Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza from Internacional for a reported £500,000 was announced, with his loan departure to Finnish club Seinäjoen Jalkapallokerho also revealed on the same day. 2019 – Winger Ryan Kent was sold to Rangers for £7m after a successful loan spell in which he had struck six times in 43 appearances. On the same day, keeper Shamal George joined Marine on loan and forward Bobby Duncan was sold to Fiorentina for €2m. Meanwhile, Martin Škrtel was released after less than a month with Atalanta and signed for İstanbul Başakşehir on the same day. Nice one Cyril 1939 - Cyril Done scored the only goal of the game on his reds debut at home to Chelsea, the day after Germany invaded Poland, and the day before Britain declared war, which resulted in the cancellation of the football season, so he had to wait until October 1946 to make his official reds bow. Out-gunned We have faced Arsenal four times in top-flight matches on this day in history, without securing victory. 1905 - We lost 3-1 at Woolwich Arsenal with Bobby Robinson bagging our consolation, and Sam Raybould missing a penalty in our first game of the season. Jack Parkinson broke his wrist in this match, keeping him out of the side for six months. We finished the game with nine men after Billy Dunlop twisted his knee. He was the hero of our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 when he played for 117 minutes of the final against Leeds United at Wembley with a broken collar bone sustained in an early challenge by Bobby Collins. He also won two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his eleven years at Anfield, making a total of 333 reds appearances and scoring four times. 2008 – Left-winger Rio Ngumoha was born in Newham, London. He joined the reds from Chelsea’s Academy in the summer of 2024, making his senior bow in an FA Cup defeat of Accrington Stanley at Anfield the following January as he became our youngest ever player in the FA Cup and youngest ever starter in all competitions aged sixteen years and 135 days. 1963 – Former First-team coach Steve Clarke was born in Saltcoats, Scotland. He was appointed in January 2011 following Kenny Dalglish’s return to the hot seat, signing a new three-year contract four months later. Tom takes charge 1896 - Tom Watson was appointed as reds boss, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death in May 1915. Happy McBirthday 1891 - Legendary left-back Donald McKinlay was born in Newton, Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Newton Villa in January 1910, making 434 appearances before joining Prescot Cables in July 1929. He scored 34 times, including one struck spectacularly from ten yards inside his own half at West Ham United in January 1926! He skippered us to two League titles, and also played in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. Off on loan 2008 – Two young centre-backs left the club to go out on loan. Jack Hobbs joined Leicester City, turning out 49 times as they claimed the League One title before signing on permanently in April 2009. Meanwhile, Godwin Antwi only played seven games for Tranmere Rovers, later joining Hereford United for another loan spell before leaving the reds for good for Vejle Boldklub in Denmark in December 2009. New stadium plans 2007 - New designs for the new stadium in Stanley Park were unveiled, coinciding with the submission of the official planning application to Liverpool City Council. This was to be a 60,000-seater stadium, with 18,000 in the Kop. However, this project has since been firmly shelved. God the champion 1993 - Robbie Fowler helped England Under-18’s to claim the European Championships for the ninth and final time to date. Red farewells 1900 - James Kelso committed suicide back in his native Scotland, aged just 29. He joined the reds from Heart Of Midlothian in January 1895, scoring five times in 23 reds games before returning to Tynecastle in May 1897. Death of a true gentleman 2001 - Joe Fagan died aged eighty. He joined the coaching staff at Anfield in 1958, becoming Assistant Manager under Bob Paisley in 1974, before moving into the hot seat himself nine years later. In his first season as boss, he led the club to a unique treble of League title, European Cup and League Cup as we won 71 of his 131 games in charge. He retired in the aftermath of the Heysel tragedy in May 1985. 1958 – He was appointed Assistant Trainer under Phil Taylor’s management, replacing Dicky Dorsett. 2019 – Noel White died. He had resigned from the Board in October 2006 after leaking critical stories of Rafael Benítez’s rotation policy to the press. He had been on the Board for twenty years, including a spell as Chairman between 1990 and 1991. Final disappointments 2002 - Dietmar Hamann and ex-red Christian Ziege appeared for Germany in the World Cup Final as they went down 2-0 against Brazil in Yokohama. Hamann thus became only the second red to appear in the biggest game in world football, after ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt in 1966. 2013 – Ex-reds Álvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres played as Brazil beat Spain 3-0 in the Confederations Cup Final in Rio de Janeiro. Those six words 2000 - Evertonians cried ‘betrayal’ as Nick Barmby announced his desire for a switch across Stanley Park with the words, “I want to play for Liverpool”. He arrived at Anfield three weeks later. Coaches in and out 2008 – The appointment of Mauricio Pellegrino as first-team coach was announced by the club. He had been working as a youth team coach at Valencia. He stayed with the reds until he followed Rafael Benítez to Internazionale in the summer of 2010. 2011 – The departure of Assistant Manager Sammy Lee by mutual consent was announced. He had been in that role since May 2008. 2021 - Rafael Benítez was appointed Manager of Everton. However, he was sacked the following January, with the Blues sitting in fifteenth place. Knocked out in Rome 1990 - Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton and ex-reds John Aldridge and Kevin Sheedy all featured as the Republic of Ireland lost 1-0 to Italy in their World Cup Quarter-final in the Stadio Olimpico. Javier’s farewells 2018 – Javier Mascherano won his 14th and final cap for his country as Argentina lost 4-3 to France in a World Cup Finals Round of Sixteen tie in Kazan, with fellow ex-red Luis Suárez helping Uruguay to defeat Portugal 2-1 in Sochi at the same stage. 2006 - Javier Mascherano appeared for the last time as a Corinthians player as Argentina drew 1-1 with Germany in their World Cup Quarter-final in Berlin, with the host nation progressing 4-2 on penalties, as fellow future red Maxi Rodríguez converted his spot-kick. 2015 – Ex-red Mascherano reached the Final of the Copa América in Chile as Argentina thumped Paraguay 6-1. On the same day, Tiago Ilori was on the losing side as Sweden Under-21’s beat Portugal 4-3 on penalties after their goalless European Championships Final in Prague. This was his tenth and last cap at this level. 2014 – Ex-red Victor Moses played as Nigeria lost 2-0 to France in their Round of Sixteen game in Brasilia. Births and death 1917 - Forward Harry Eastham was born in Blackpool. He signed from his hometown club in February 1936 but only notched four times in 68 games for the reds in a career interrupted by the Second World War, scoring four times. He left Anfield for Tranmere Rovers in May 1948 having helped us to claim the first post-war League title. 1890 - Scottish inside-forward Tom Miller was born in Motherwell. He signed for £400 from Hamilton Academical in February 1912 and netted 56 times in his 146 games while at Anfield, helping us to our first FA Cup Final in 1914. However, he is also remembered as being one of the players caught up in the Manchester United match-rigging scandal of 1915, whom he joined in September 1920. 2007 – Midfielder Trey Nyoni was born. He joined the Academy from Leicester City in 2023, making his senior debut in our FA Cup defeat of Southampton last February, also sitting on the bench on six occasions, including the League Cup Final at Wembley that same month. 2006 – Northern Irish forward Trent Kone-Doherty was born in Derry. He joined the Academy in July 2022, turning pro in October 2023. 1970 - Former reds defender Barry Jones was born. The apprentice decorator signed from his hometown club Prescot Town for a £500 donation but only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, in our 1-0 UEFA Cup defeat against Kuusysi Lahti in Finland. 1938 – Scottish inside-left Hugh Morgan died. He struck seventeen times in 68 reds games after his arrival from St. Mirren in March 1898 for £200. He was top scorer in his first full season at Anfield, also winning a second senior cap while on our books before joining Blackburn Rovers in June 1900. In and out 1900 – Right-back General Stevenson left the reds to sign for Barnsley. He had signed from Padiham in December 1897, playing 22 times without scoring. 1954 – Left-back Eddie Spicer’s contract expired. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving with the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to score twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 1952 – Glasgow-born centre-half Joe Cadden left the reds to sign for Grimsby Town after just five games since his arrival from Brooklyn Wanderers in the USA in June 1948. 1988 – Defender Nicky Tanner signed from his hometown club Bristol Rovers for £20,000. He made a total of 59 appearances for the reds under Graeme Souness, netting his only goal at Goodison Park in December 1991. Ronnie leaves the Shrimpers 1997 - Ronnie Whelan resigned as Manager of Southend United, blaming a lack of support from the board. He had been in charge at Roots Hall for two years, but was unable to keep them in the rarefied heights of the First Division. Keepers on the move 2005 - Chris Kirkland joined West Bromwich Albion on trial. He later joined them on a season-long loan, but injury once again struck, restricting him to just twelve appearances for the Baggies. 1999 - Ex-reds reserves keeper Michael Stensgaard signed for F.C. København from Southampton on a free transfer. As at Anfield, he had failed to make the first team at The Dell. 1952 – Welsh stopper Cyril Sidlow was released, joining Notts County two months later. He played 165 reds games after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £4,000 in February 1946, helping us claim the League title in 1947 and appearing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. On the same day, right-back Bill Shepherd moved on to Wigan Athletic. He had played 58 reds games since arriving from Elm Park in December 1945. A happy day for Shanks 1944 - Bill Shankly married Agnes ‘Nessie’ Fisher. They were happily married for 37 years until Bill’s death. Nessie herself passed away in August 2002. Red death 1949 - Inside-forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers died aged 53. He joined the club in April 1915 and won two League titles in his time at Anfield, scoring 151 goals in his 339 reds appearances before joining West Bromwich Albion in March 1928. Ton up for Dirk 2014 – Ex-red Dirk Kuyt reached a century of full internationals as the Netherlands beat Mexico 2-1 in a World Cup Round of Sixteen game in Brazil, with future red Gini Wijnaldum also in action. In and out 2006 - Bruno Cheyrou officially left the reds, joining Stade Rennais after a season-long loan with Girondins de Bordeaux. He had netted five times in 48 reds games since signing from Lille OSC Métropole for £3.7m in May 2002. On the same day, Malcolm Elias was appointed Academy Director of Recruitment. He arrived from Southampton with a track record of more than twenty years in youth football, although he only remained with the reds for three years. 1978 - Kevin Sheedy signed from Hereford United for £80,000. Frank departs 2007 - Joint Chief Scout Frank McParland left the club to become General Manager at Bolton Wanderers, although he only remained there three months, and has since returned to the reds’ Academy. He started out in 1995 by assisting John Owens with the Under-14’s. When the Academy opened in 1999, he was handed a full-time role as head of the community coaching department. He returned to Melwood as Director of Academy and Player Development in May 2011, remaining in that role until his departure last November. Also at the World Cup 2010 - Raul Meireles won his last cap as a Porto player as Portugal lost 1-0 to Spain in their Round of Sixteen encounter in Cape Town. King Kenny gets the boot 2000 - Kenny Dalglish was sacked as Director of Football at Celtic. He had been in that role for a little over a year, during which time John Barnes had come and gone as Manager, while Kenny himself had led the Hoops to the League Cup, although Celtic finished 21 points behind Rangers in the League that season. Ephraim the first 1921 - Full-back Ephraim Longworth became the first red to captain England, aged 33 years and 231 days, as he won his second cap in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Belgium in Brussels. Clubmate Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers netted his first England goal in the same game. Wembley disappointment 1977 - Our first treble dream died as we lost the FA Cup Final to Manchester United. Jimmy Case equalised just two minutes after Stuart Pearson had given United the lead. However, only three minutes later Jimmy Greenhoff scored the winning goal, one of his five past us, to take the cup to Old Trafford for the first time in fourteen years. This remains our only first-class game on this day in history. Farewell Lucas 2017 – Lucas Leiva played his 346th and last reds game as we beat Middlesbrough 3-0 at Anfield to secure UEFA Champions League football for the next season and relegate the visitors. Gini Wijnaldum opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, with Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana on target after the break. Striking first caps 1980 - Ian Rush won his first full cap for Wales, as a substitute in their 1-0 defeat by Scotland in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. He stayed in charge for two years, with his signings including Neil Webb and Mark Hateley. Births and death 1963 - Danish defender Torben Piechnik was born in Copenhagen. He only played 24 times after Graeme Souness signed him from F.C. København for £500,000 in September 1992, having helped his country to a shock win at Euro ’92, but Roy Evans released him after just two seasons at Anfield. 1896 – Inside-left Hector Lawson was born in Shettleston, Glasgow. Divock Origi handed us a half-time lead, but Mats Hummels headed in soon after the break. Al off the mark 2007 - Our first ever game at Reading ended in a 2-1 win. Full-back Álvaro Arbeloa raced most of the length of the pitch to notch his first reds goal as we reached 200 League points under Rafael Benítez. Dirk Kuyt headed a late winner after Brynjar Gunnarsson had drawn the home side level. Bashing the Hammers 1984 - We trounced West Ham United 6-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush and Graeme Souness both netted twice, with Kenny Dalglish bagging his 150th reds goal and Ronnie Whelan also on target as we went 4-0 up inside half an hour. Cottaged by Elton’s cousin 1956 - Roy Dwight scored a hat-trick for Fulham in their 3-1 Second Division win over us at Craven Cottage, the first of his four goals past us. A win at Old Trafford 1982 - A goal from Craig Johnston was enough to beat Manchester United. Bruce Grobbelaar saved an early Frank Stapleton penalty, being helped by seeing a picture of him converting a previous spot-kick in the programme before the match! He was later banned for ten months and fined £4,000. 2017 – Ex-reds boss Brendan Rodgers signed a new four-year contract with Celtic, having already led them to the League Cup and title since taking charge in May 2016. David Luiz gave the visitors the lead with an opportunistic free-kick, with Gini Wijnaldum heading in after the break. 1920 – Right-back Ephraim Longworth played his 200th reds game as we won an FA Cup Second Round tie 2-0 at Luton Town thanks to a brace from Billy Lacey. He arrived at Anfield for £7m in July 2005 after a successful season with Southampton, when he had bagged sixteen goals in 33 games as the Saints were relegated. He struck 42 times in 134 reds games, despite not notching in his first nineteen outings, helping us to claim the FA Cup and FA Community Shield, but was sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m in July 2008. 2001 – Midfielder Curtis Jones was born in Liverpool, making his senior debut in our FA Cup Third Round defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2019, netting his first reds goal to secure a derby win at Anfield at the same stage a year later. He has struck sixteen times in 121 reds games before his 23rd birthday, helping us to claim the Premier League title and FA Community Shield. Speeding in 1991 - David Speedie was signed from Coventry City by Kenny Dalglish for £675,000. He netted eight times in fourteen reds games before moving to Blackburn Rovers seven months later. 2002 - Abel Xavier made the short trip across Stanley Park for £800,000. He netted twice in 21 reds games, of which we only lost three, including on his debut in a 6-0 thumping of Ipswich Town at Portman Road. He moved on to Hannover 96 in February 2004, having been released by the reds. Double debutants Two reds defenders have made their debuts on this day over the years. 1999 - Rigobert Song made his reds bow in a 2-1 defeat at Coventry City, with Steve McManaman nabbing our late consolation. 1946 - Left-back Eddie Spicer debuted in a 2-0 FA Cup Fourth Round win at home to Bolton Wanderers, although we went out 5-2 on aggregate. Jack Balmer and Berry Nieuwenhuys were on target for the reds while keeper Harry Wheeler Nickson played his third and last game for the club. 1929 - We also went out of the FA Cup to Bolton, losing a Fourth Round replay 5-2 at Burnden Park after extra time. John Lindsay grabbed the first of his three reds goals with Gordon Hodgson also on target. Harold Blackmore netted two of his five goals past us, with George Gibson also bagging one of his five against the reds and Jim McClelland and Billy Butler also scoring. Fifty for Terry 1982 – Terry McDermott’s second goal was his fiftieth in the League for the reds as we won 3-0 at Aston Villa. Ian Rush had opened the scoring in the third minute. Luis again 2013 - Luis Suárez scored in his third consecutive game as we drew 2-2 at Arsenal. He opened the scoring early on, with Jordan Henderson giving us a two-goal lead after an hour. However, Olivier Giroud headed in a free-kick, the first of his eight goals against us to date, before Theo Walcott struck three minutes later to level the match. 1971 – We beat Arsenal 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from John Toshack and Tommy Smith. Births and deaths 1992 – Former reserves midfielder Tom Ince was born in Stockport. He made just one senior reds appearance, as a substitute in our humiliating Carling Cup defeat by Northampton Town, moving on to Blackpool in August 2011. 1911 – Forward Jimmy Collins was born in London. He signed from Walsall in January 1936, failing to score in seven reds games before joining Cardiff City the following May, for whom he bagged forty goals in 75 League outings. 1917 - William Barclay died. The former Secretary and Vice-Chairman of Everton was the reds’ Secretary for the first three years of the club’s existence, but the team was picked by the Board, in which time we claimed the Lancashire League and Second Division titles. 1974 – Centre-forward Danny Shone died. He signed from local amateur side Grayson’s of Garston in May 1921, netting 26 goals in 81 games as he helped us to claim the League title in his first season. He moved on to West Ham United in June 1928. Heading off 1951 – George Kay stepped down as Manager due to illness, and sadly died just three years later. He had led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1946, and the FA Cup Final four years later as we won just 142 of his 357 games in charge. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. 1930 – Scottish outside-left John Lindsay left the reds to join Swansea Town. He had struck three times in sixteen outings since signing from Rhyl Athletic in April 1928. On the same day, defender Bill Murray moved on to Third Division North side Barrow, becoming their captain. He had signed from Clydebank in November 1927, netting once in four senior outings. Only strike 1897 – Half-back Tom Cleghorn bagged his only reds goal in our 4-3 defeat of Burton Swifts in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. Inside-left Davy Hannah headed us ahead somewhat against the run of play with his twelfth and final reds goal. George Allan restored our lead after Joseph Dewey had equalised, although James Wyllie levelled the scores again. B. Evans gave the visitors the lead after half-time before Cleghorn pounced. Jimmy Ross struck the late winner, his 39th and last goal for the club. Most recently 2018 – We won 3-0 at Huddersfield Town, with Emre Can and Roberto Firmino on target before the break. Mohamed Salah added a late penalty. 2016 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by West Ham United in our FA Cup Fourth Round tie with left-back José Enrique playing his 99th and last reds game, with forward Jerome Sinclair making his fifth and last appearance. Joe Allen skippered the side for the only time. 2010 – Pepe Reina played his hundredth consecutive League game as we beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring before we doubled our lead through an Emiliano Insúa strike that deflected in off Kevin Davies for an own goal. 2007 - Peter Crouch was on target on his 26th birthday as we won 2-1 at West Ham United, netting the club’s 6,000th goal in top-flight football, after Dirk Kuyt had opened the scoring straight after the break. Emlyn at the wrong end 1968 - Tony Hateley, Peter Thompson, Roger Hunt and Chris Lawler all netted before Emlyn Hughes put through his own net as we beat Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic 4-1 in an FA Cup Third Round replay at Anfield. We eventually bowed out to West Bromwich Albion in the Sixth Round that season. Ex-red strikers on the move again 2011 - Robbie Keane joined West Ham United on loan from Tottenham Hotspur. He netted just twice in ten outings for the Irons. 2001 - Stan Collymore joined Real Oviedo from Bradford City on a free transfer. He only lasted a little over two months in Spain before sensationally quitting the game. 2003 - Robbie Fowler was sold to Manchester City from Leeds United for £6m, after just fourteen months at Elland Road, in which time he had netted fourteen times in 33 games. 2007 - Sean Dundee signed for Stuttgarter Kickers from Kickers Offenbach. He netted once in five League games before returning to South Africa to sign for AmaZulu. 2009 - El-Hadji Diouf joined Blackburn Rovers from Sunderland for £2.5m, after failing to score in sixteen games for the Black Cats. 2014 – Steven Gillespie was released by Fleetwood Town after four goals in 25 games. Twice apiece against our bitterest rivals Both Everton and Manchester United have been our opponents twice on this day in history. 1902 - The first time came when we won 2-0 at Goodison in an FA Cup First Round replay, with goals from Alex Raisbeck and John ‘Sailor’ Hunter’s twelfth and last reds strike, our first Cup defeat of our neighbours. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at Southampton at the next hurdle. 1932 - We returned to Goodison, but this time lost 2-1 in a League game, with Dave Wright nabbing our consolation. Tommy White struck one of his four goals past us, with Ted Critchley also scoring for the home side. 1909 - We beat Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield in the League, thanks to strikes from Arthur Goddard and Joe Hewitt, and a Tom Chorlton penalty. Sandy Turnbull netted one of his six goals against the reds. 1960 - We lost by the same score in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield, with Johnny Wheeler grabbing our goal. Bobby Charlton bagged the first two of his four goals against the reds, with Warren Bradley also scoring for United. Stumbling towards Wembley 1965 - We were held 1-1 at Anfield by Stockport County in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie, who were then bottom of the Fourth Division. Bill Shankly missed the game to scout our next European opponents, so confident was he of victory. The game was played in front of 51,851 despite clashing with Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral on TV. County took a shock lead through Len White after just eighteen minutes, with Gordon Milne equalising early in the second half. We won the replay 2-0, en route to our first ever cup triumph. Hosting the Foxes 2019 – We were held to a 1-1 draw as we extended our lead at the top of the table to five points in our ultimately foiled attempt to claim the League title for the first time since 1990. We were denied a seemingly clear-cut penalty in the second half for a foul on Naby Keïta. 2002 – Emile Heskey bagged the only goal of the game against his former club. A Savage end 1964 - Right-half Ted Savage died. He played 105 reds games after signing from Lincoln City in May 1931. He made his debut as a forward, netting his only two goals for the club in a 4-0 defeat of Grimsby Town at Anfield that September. He moved on to Manchester United in January 1938. 2018 – The funeral for 1960’s keeper Tommy Lawrence was held at St Elphin’s Parish Church in Warrington. A win on the south coast 1991 - Steve McMahon put us in front at Brighton & Hove Albion in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay. However, Mike Small equalised to send the tie into extra time, with John Byrne putting the home side ahead. Ian Rush levelled the match before McMahon bagged his second with five minutes to go as we won 3-2. We were knocked out by Everton in the next round, after three meetings. African action 2004 - Future red Momo Sissoko played in Mali’s 3-1 defeat of Burkina Faso in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Tunisia. Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both played as Senegal beat Kenya 3-0 in another group game that day. 2008 - Ex-red Rigobert Song featured in the same competition as Cameroon beat Sudan 3-0 in Ghana. 2012 – Future red Kolo Touré played for the Ivory Coast in their 2-0 defeat of Angola in a group game in Equatorial Guinea. 2013 – Touré also played in a 2-2 draw with Algeria in South Africa. 1979 – Future red Avi Cohen played for Israel as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Austria in Jaffa. 2015 – Future red Ozan Kabak debuted for Turkey Under-15’s in their 5-1 friendly thumping of the Czech Republic in Side. 2017 – Future red Luis Díaz played for Colombia in their 1-1 draw with Venezuela in a South American Championships final stage game in Ecuador. 2022 – Mohamed Salah captained Egypt as they beat Morocco 2-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations Quarter-final in Cameroon, netting the equaliser to take the tie to extra time. Departure of a striking sensation 1936 - South African striker Gordon Hodgson was sold to Aston Villa for £3,000. He had bagged a club record eighteen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games since signing from Transvaal in November 1925, although he was unable to claim a medal in his time at Anfield. He only stayed at Villa Park for a year before joining Leeds United. Tchau Phil 2018 – Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho joined Barcelona for an initial, eye-watering £105m fee, comfortably a reds club record. He had signed from Internazionale in January 2013 for £8.5m, bagging 54 goals in 201 appearances. Fielding the kids 2017 – Our youngest ever starting eleven, aged on average 21 years and 296 days, was held to a goalless draw by Plymouth Argyle in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield. We won the replay but fell at the next hurdle to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Happy birthdays 1953 - Hughie McAuley was born in Bootle. He moved to Melwood to become Reserve Team Manager just before the start of the 2002/03 season, working as a Coach at that level with Gary Ablett, before taking charge of the Under-18’s back at the Academy. He had previously been a regular in our reserves in the early 1970’s, before working with the Academy on a full-time basis since June 1990. He played a major role in our FA Youth Cup triumph in 1996 and helped to develop players including Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen.. He left the club in the summer of 2009. 1947 - Former reserves forward Ted MacDougall was born in Inverness. He signed pro terms on his nineteenth birthday in 1966 but never made our first-team, moving on to York City for £5,000 in 1967. He enjoyed his greatest success with Norwich City, for whom he banged in 66 goals in 138 games. 1949 – Forward Steve Peplow was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his seventeenth birthday and struck nineteen goals for the reserves in 1968/69, but only played three senior games, without finding the back of the net. He left for Swindon Town in June 1971 after a successful loan spell there. 1991 – Former Academy forward Marvin Pourié was born in Werne in Germany. He arrived from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2007 at the age of sixteen, scoring twelve times in his first year with the Under-18’s but returned to Germany in January 2009, joining Schalke 04. 1999 – Polish keeper Kamil Grabara was born in Ruda Śląska. He arrived in the summer of 2016 from Ruch Chorzów, making it to the first-team bench once before moving on to F.C. København in July 2021. 1884 - Robert Blanthorne was born in Birkenhead. He only played twice for the first team, at the end of the 1906/07 season after signing from Birkenhead in the second half of the campaign. 1932 - Left-back Tom Wilkie died. He struck once in 64 reds appearances after signing from Heart Of Midlothian in January 1895, moving on to Portsmouth in 1899. 1869 - James Kelso was born in Cardross. He only played one senior reds game, in a 4-0 Lancashire League defeat of Bury at Anfield in September 1892, and sadly committed suicide aged just 29, back in his native Scotland. Stewart’s treble 1910 – Inside-right Jimmy Stewart scored a hat-trick as we thumped Chelsea 5-1 at Anfield. Jack Parkinson added a brace. Debutants galore 2016 – Winger Ryan Kent and left-back Joe Maguire played their only senior reds games, with centre-half Tiago Ilori, winger Sheyi Ojo and midfielder Kevin Stewart also debuting as a very inexperienced side drew 2-2 at League Two side Exeter City in the FA Cup Third Round as Christian Benteke skippered the side for the only time. We twice fell behind, but the only reds goals from forward Jerome Sinclair and left-back Brad Smith drew us level each time. Most recently 2021 – We won an FA Cup Third Round tie 4-1 behind closed doors at a COVID-struck Aston Villa. Sadio Mané bagged a brace with Gini Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah both also on target. On the same day, ex-red Gary Mackay-Steven signed for Heart Of Midlothian, netting four times in eighteen appearances in his first campaign back in Scotland. Red departures 1955 – Forward Fred Geary died. He signed from Everton for £60 in May 1895, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. 2010 - Andrea Dossena joined SSC Napoli for €4.25m. He had struck twice in 31 reds games after signing from Udinese for £7m in July 2008. On the same day, centre-half Zak Whitbread left Millwall for Norwich City after four goals in 119 games for the Lions. 2020 – Young midfielder Isaac Christie-Davies joined Cercle Brugge Koninklijke Sportvereniging on loan, having played just one senior reds game. He netted on his debut in a friendly, but failed to make a senior appearance, moving on permanently to Barnsley in September 2020. Stumbling towards Cardiff 2003 - Two late Michael Tonge strikes gave Sheffield United the first leg advantage in our Worthington Cup Semi-final at Bramall Lane, after Neil Mellor’s first senior goal had opened the scoring. We, of course, turned things around in the second leg, to progress to our ninth League Cup Final. More managerial ins and outs 1997 - Kevin Keegan resigned as Manager of Newcastle United for the first time. He had been in charge for nearly five years, guiding them to the First Division title in his first full season in charge, and then to within a whisker of the Premiership in 1996. 2001 - Nigel Spackman was appointed First Division Barnsley’s boss. He was in charge for nine months before being sacked. 2009 - Nigel Clough took over as Manager of Derby County, as a replacement for Paul Jewell. He remained in charge until being sacked in September 2013. Bill’s century 1949 – Bill Jones played his hundredth reds game, putting through his own net as we drew an FA Cup third Round tie 2-2 at Nottingham Forest. We were two goals behind at half time, but Willie Fagan and Bob Paisley both struck late on, before the match headed into extra time. The Shrimpers again 1958 - Right-back John Molyneux struck his first reds goal as we beat Southend United 3-2 in an FA Cup Third Round replay, as well as putting through his own net. Centre-half Dick White scored his only reds goal, with Tony Rowley netting his 38th and last goal for the club. Sammy McCrory bagged the other goal for the Shrimpers. We made it to the Sixth Round that season before falling to Blackburn Rovers. The lights go out in Bristol 1994 - Our FA Cup Third Round match at Bristol City was called off during the second half, due to floodlight failure. We were eventually knocked out by the First Division side in an Anfield replay. Mixed fortunes against Rovers We have faced Blackburn Rovers three times on this day in history, winning twice in the FA Cup. 1898 - However, we lost the first meeting 2-1, when our strike came from a William Ball own goal in a First Division match at Ewood Park. Forward Bobby Colvin made the first of his three reds appearances in this game. 1983 - We won away from home by the same score in the Third Round, with David Hodgson and Ian Rush on target. Unfortunately, we only reached the Fifth Round, going out at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. 1991 - Ray Houghton, Ian Rush and Steve Staunton were on the scoresheet as we won a Third Round replay 3-0 at Anfield. Steve McMahon was sent off in this game, as Glenn Hysén had been in the drawn first meeting. We went as far as the Fifth Round again that year before being knocked out by Everton. Evans on target and off 1955 - We drew 1-1 at Lincoln City in an FA Cup Third Round tie, with goalscorer John Evans sent off. We won the replay four days later, after extra time, as we made it to the Fifth Round before being knocked out by Huddersfield Town at Anfield. No goals against Palace We have twice faced Crystal Palace in the FA Cup Third Round on this day in history, with both matches ending goalless. 1938 – We were held at Selhurst Park in our first ever meeting with the Eagles, making it as far as the Fifth Round when we were knocked out by Huddersfield Town. 1977 – We drew in L4 when Ray Clemence made his 400th appearance for the reds. Named the best 2019 - Mohamed Salah was named as CAF African Footballer of the Year for the second consecutive time after a calendar year in which he had netted in the UEFA Champions League Final, amongst his 24 goals in 51 reds games. Naby Keïta and Sadio Mané were also named in the Team of the Year. 2024 - Dominik Szoboszlai was named Hungarian male Athlete of the Year for the second time, having won it three years earlier. Jermaine the record breaker 1999 - Jermaine Pennant signed for the Gunners from Notts County in a £2m deal, becoming the most expensive teenager in English football history, aged just sixteen. He only grabbed three goals for Arsenal, but they all came in his first League start as he made just 26 senior appearances, although he only played one other League game from the off. Other reds games 1972 – We lost 1-0 at Leicester City with Ally Brown heading in very early. 1966 – Ron Yeats scored a diving header, the only goal of our trip to Highbury against Arsenal. 1921 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. We won the replay, but were knocked out in the next round by Newcastle United. Ex-red Tom Miller opened the scoring, but Harry Chambers nabbed our equaliser. Titi on target 1997 – Future red Titi Camara struck for Guinea as they lost a friendly 2-1 to Ivory Coast in Bouaké. A new contract 2007 - Young midfielder Danny Guthrie signed a new contract until June 2009. He played just seven senior reds games before being sold to Newcastle United for £2.25m in July 2008. A final cap 1995 - Rigobert Song won his eighth and final cap as a Tonnerre Yaoundé player as Cameroon were held to a goalless draw by Malawi in Douala. 2013 – Oussama Assaidi played for Morocco as they held Zambia to a goalless draw in a friendly in Johannesburg. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah featured in Egypt’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Tunisia in Cairo. -
Happy birthday Willie 1939 - Left-half Willie Stevenson was born in Leith. He signed from Rangers for £20,000 in October 1962 and missed just nine League games in his first four seasons, making a total of 241 appearances and netting eighteen times. He helped us to two League titles and our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 before moving on to Stoke City in December 1967. A win at the Bridge 2008 - Xabi Alonso’s deflected strike was the only goal of our trip to Stamford Bridge, handing Chelsea their first home League defeat since February 2004, ending an 86-game unbeaten run. Alonso also hit the post with a second-half free-kick. Ton up for Didi 2002 - Dietmar Hamann played his hundredth reds League game as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield, with Jamie Redknapp making his first appearance back at Anfield since his transfer. Danny Murphy scored a beautifully curled shot, before Michael Owen’s penalty restored our lead following Dean Richards’ equaliser. Luis at the treble 2013 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick, his first at Anfield, as we thumped West Bromwich Albion 4-1, with James Morrison pulling one back from the spot before Daniel Sturridge completed the scoring. Reds firsts 2023 – Diogo Jota opened the scoring of our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield against Toulouse, but Thijs Dallinga soon levelled. Wataru Endō scored his first goal for the club with Darwin Núñez also on target before the break. Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah struck in the second half to complete a 5-1 win as midfielder James McConnell and left-back Calum Scanlon coming off the bench to make their senior bows. Into the Lions’ den 2004 - We won 3-0 at Millwall in a Third Round Carling Cup match as we headed towards a record tenth Final in the competition on our first visit to The New Den. Jerzy Dudek skippered the reds for the first time, while future Lion Zak Whitbread was making his reds bow. Salif Diao netted his third and final reds goal in the first half, with Milan Baroš adding a brace. Unfortunately, the game was marred by sick chants from the home fans that led to confrontations between the two sets of supporters. A rarity for Sami 2000 - Sami Hyypiä sat on the reds bench for the only time in his first five seasons at Anfield as a late Emile Heskey goal handed us victory over Czech side Slovan Liberec at Anfield in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Second Round tie. Robbie Fowler spurned a number of good chances, including a penalty. Sami did not reappear on the bench until March 2005. Robbie’s poor form could be partly explained by the fact that his future wife Kerrie had given birth to their second daughter, Jaya, earlier that day. A blooming treble 1912 - Rams legend Steve Bloomer bagged a hat-trick as we lost 4-2 to Derby County at the Baseball Ground, the last of his fourteen strikes past us. Arthur Metcalf netted both our goals, with Harry Leonard also on target for the home side. 1977 - We also faced the Rams when a David Fairclough brace handed us a 2-0 League Cup Third Round victory at Anfield. 1927 – Outside-left Fred Hopkin scored a hat-trick as we won a Lancashire Senior Cup game 5-2 at Southport, with Gordon Hodgson and Tom Reid also netting. Signing on 1896 – Scottish inside-right Andrew McCowie joined the reds from Cambuslang Hibernian. He struck eleven times in 35 games before joining Woolwich Arsenal in May 1899. On the move 2000 - Stan Collymore joined Bradford City from Leicester City on a free transfer. He struck twice in eight games, before joining Real Oviedo in Spain. 2003 - Academy Chief Scout Dave Moss was sacked as Manager of Macclesfield Town, his only time in the hot seat. He had led them to 33 victories in his 102 games since taking over in November 2001, leading them to mid-table finishes in consecutive seasons in the basement division before being dismissed after a poor start to the following campaign. He joined the reds in February 2006. 2015 – Young midfielder Cameron Brannagan signed a new contract. He made nine senior reds appearances before moving on to Oxford United in January 2018. Beating the Blues We have twice seen off Ipswich Town on this day in history. 1963 - Jimmy Melia scored his first goal for the club with Roger Hunt also netting as we won a First Division match 2-1 at Portman Road. 1982 - Ronnie Whelan and Mark Lawrenson were on target as we won a League Cup Second Round tie 2-0 at Anfield. Taking the Heighway again 1974 - Steve Heighway grabbed the only goal of our home League meeting with Leeds United for the second successive season, with each goal coming mid-way through the second half of the game. Leeds were at this time the reigning champions. First and last 1895 – Half-back Bill Keech played the first of his six reds games as we beat Notts County 3-0 at Anfield on the way to the Second Division title. Fred Geary and Jimmy Ross added to an early headed goal from Harry Bradshaw. 1907 – Harold Fitzpatrick struck his second and final reds goal as we beat The Wednesday 3-0 at Anfield, with brothers Joe and Charlie Hewitt both also netting. International firsts and last 1985 - Future red Ronnie Rosenthal started his first senior international while winning his eighth cap as Israel lost 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier in New Zealand. Ex-red Avi Cohen also played. 2012 – Jerome Sinclair won his fifth and last cap for England Under-17’s, with Sheyi Ojo also playing in their 3-2 European Championships qualifying defeat of Northern Ireland in Estonia. 2013 – Sheyi Ojo scored his only goal for England Under-17’s as they beat Gibraltar 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Armenia, with future red Dominic Solanke bagging a brace. Corey Whelan featured for the Irish Under-17’s on the same day. On target 2007 – David N’Gog netted as France Under-19’s drew a friendly 2-2 with Greece. Stalemates with the Trotters We have twice drawn with Bolton Wanderers on this day in history. 1901 - Andy McGuigan was on target in a First Division fixture at Anfield 1918 - Thomas Bennett and Donald McKinlay netted at Burnden Park as we travelled for a Wartime League match. Other reds games 1991 – Ray Houghton netted the only goal of Coventry City’s visit to Anfield. 1988 – Mike Hooper saved penalty from future red Nigel Clough, but we still lost 2-1 at Nottingham Forest with Ian Rush on the scoresheet. Neil Webb scored one of his five goals against the reds, with Brian Rice also on target. 1985 – We beat Luton Town 3-2 in L4 with ex-Hatter Paul Walsh bagging a brace and Jan Mølby also scoring. Mick Harford struck one of his seven goals past us, with Steve Foster also scoring. 1968 – Alun Evans and Peter Thompson struck as we beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Anfield. 1957 – We beat Bristol Rovers 2-0 in a home Second Division encounter thanks to goals from Billy Liddell and Alan A’Court. 1946 – Albert Stubbins bagged the only goal of Brentford’s visit to L4. 1935 – We beat Huddersfield Town 3-0 at Anfield. Fred Howe scored twice, with Berry Nieuwenhuys also scoring as Gordon Hodgson had a penalty saved. Early caps 1980 - Future red Bruce Grobbelaar won his second cap for Zimbabwe as they won the first leg of an African Cup of Nations qualifier 1-0 in Malawi. 1994 - Sami Hyypiä also made his sophomore appearance as Finland trounced Lithuania 7-0 in a friendly in Tallinn. 1977 – Future reds centre-half Glenn Hysén won his seventeenth and last Under-18’s cap in Sweden’s 4-2 defeat by Czechoslovakia in a European Championships qualifier in Trelleborg. -
Five for young Robbie 1993 - Robbie Fowler scored all five goals as we thumped Fulham in a League Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, having already scored on his club debut in the first leg. Only four other reds have scored five times in the same game. A premier millennium 2008 – We went in 2-0 down at half time at Manchester City. A Stephen Ireland volley was City’s hundredth home League goal against the reds, while a Javier Garrido free-kick four minutes before the break ensured City reached 200 goals against us in all competitions. Fernando Torres netted our thousandth goal in the Premier League before heading in a second to draw us level after Pablo Zabaleta was dismissed for a foul on Xabi Alonso. Dirk Kuyt grabbed a dramatic stoppage-time winner as we won 3-2, while Martin Škrtel suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury that kept him out of action for over two months. 1914 – We thumped City 6-3 in our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at their old Hyde Road ground. Jimmy Nicholl and Fred Pagnam bagged a brace each, with Phil Bratley and Billy Lacey also on target. A Czech treble 1997 - Patrik Berger bagged his only hat-trick in English football as we beat Chelsea 4-2 at Anfield, with Robbie Fowler netting the other late on, and Stig Inge Bjørnebye playing his hundredth League game for us. Chelsea’s Bernard Lambourde had been sent off shortly before the half-hour mark, with the score still level at 1-1 after Gianfranco Zola’s equaliser. Gustavo Poyet scored from the spot late on for the Blues. Sadio’s half century 2019 - Sadio Mané scored his fiftieth League goal for the reds as he reached a century of League outings for us in our 2-1 defeat of Leicester City at Anfield. James Maddison equalised late on, but James Milner converted a stoppage-time penalty to secure victory after Mané was felled, our eighth straight League win from the start of the season. 1929 – We lost a First Division encounter 2-1 at Filbert Street, despite Jimmy Smith giving us an early lead. After the break, Arthur Lochhead scored one of his five goals past the reds with Ernie Hine netting one of his ten for Leicester against us as we came under the cosh. Stevie again 2013 - Steven Gerrard scored in his fifteenth consecutive League season, a new club record, converting a penalty as we beat Crystal Palace 3-1 at Anfield. Luis Suárez and Daniel Sturridge had both already struck as we raced into a three-goal lead. Dwight Gayle headed in a second-half consolation, the first of his five goals past us to date. Off the mark 2023 – Ryan Gravenberch struck his first reds goal just before half time as we beat Royale Union Saint-Gilloise 2-0 in a UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield. Diogo Jota added the stoppage-time second. Double treble 1940 - Denis Westcott scored four goals and South African outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys netted a hat-trick as we trounced Chester 9-1 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Bob Paisley and George Drury netted the others. Happy birthdays 1905 - Scottish forward Dave Wright was born in Kirkcaldy. He bagged 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games after signing from Sunderland in March 1930. He remained at Anfield until July 1934, when he joined Hull City for £1,000. 1938 - Inside-forward Alan Banks was born in Liverpool. He signed from Rankin Boys in August 1956, turning professional in May 1958. He struck six times in just eight games for the reds, leaving for Cambridge City in July 1961 and going on to enjoy far greater success in the lower divisions, netting more than two hundred goals. 1971 – Former first-team coach and centre-back Mauricio Pellegrino was born in Leones in Argentina. He arrived at Anfield with an impressive reputation, having previously won the Spanish League three times and the UEFA Cup, as well as appearing in two Champions League Finals. However, he rarely impressed in his thirteen reds games, moving on to Deportivo Alavés after just five months in L4. He returned to the club in a coaching capacity in June 2008, following Rafael Benítez to Internazionale in the summer of 2010. 1968 - Reserves winger John Jeffers was born in Liverpool. He never made our first-team but was a regular for Port Vale after moving there in December 1988. He also turned out for Shrewsbury Town and Stockport County. 2004 - Kaide Gordon was born in Derby. He arrived from Derby County in February 2021 for an initial fee reported to be £1m, making his senior bow in our League Cup Third Round tie at Norwich City seven months later. He has struck once in seven outings to date. Mixed derby fortunes 1907 - Jack Cox, brothers Charlie and Joe Hewitt, and Alex Raisbeck all struck as we won 4-2 at Goodison Park. A rare excursion up front 1899 - Centre-half Alex Raisbeck played the first of two matches at centre-forward, in our 2-1 defeat by Notts County at Trent Bridge, with Jack Cox netting our consolation as Tom Watson reached a century of League games in charge. Big post-war wins 1946 - We thumped Grimsby Town 6-1 at Blundell Park, thanks to a brace apiece from Albert Stubbins and Billy Liddell, a Willie Fagan penalty and a Jack Balmer goal. 1957 - We hit five without reply at home to Doncaster Rovers in a Second Division fixture, with Tony Rowley and Jimmy Melia both netting twice and Louis Bimpson also on the scoresheet. 1963 - Ian St. John scored as he reached a century of reds outings, with Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson also on target as we beat Aston Villa 5-2 at Anfield, with the scoring rounded out by a double from Roger Hunt. Future red Tony Hateley bagged the first two of his five goals against us. Chico’s farewell 1994 - Forward Lee Jones made his reds bow as a substitute for Steve McManaman in a 4-1 League Cup win at Burnley as we reached the Third Round 6-1 on aggregate. Jamie Redknapp bagged a brace with Robbie Fowler on target and Nigel Clough scoring his ninth and final reds goal. Liam Robinson bagged a late consolation for the Clarets while Steve Nicol appeared for the 468th and last time. 1968 - We also won at Burnley when Peter Thompson and Geoff Strong struck in our 4-0 top-flight win, after Roger Hunt had grabbed a first-half brace. Underneath the floodlights 1960 - We won the first leg of the Floodlight Challenge Cup, beating Everton 3-1 at Anfield. Dave Hickson, Roger Hunt and Johnny Morrissey bagged our goals. The return was not played for another year, when we drew 2-2 to claim the trophy for the third and final time. Management moves 1995 – Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Internazionale. He led them to seventh in his first season, and then to third and the UEFA Cup Final in the following campaign. He was then tempted to return to England to take over at Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 1997. 2009 - Steve Staunton was named as Darlington boss, taking over two days later. He was sacked in March 2010 with the Quakers at the bottom of the League and facing relegation to the Conference. He had won just four of his 23 League matches in charge. 2021 – Ex-reds loanee midfielder Nuri Şahin was appointed Head Coach of Antalyaspor in his native Turkey, staying in charge until taking over Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e. V. Dortmund in December 2023. 2022 – Xabi Alonso was appointed Manager of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, keeping them up in the Bundesliga and leading them to the Semi-final of the UEFA Europa League in his first season in charge. Young debutants 2011 – Jack Robinson struck his first goal for England Under-19’s while winning his fifth cap in their 2-2 draw with France in the Limoges Tournament. Adam Morgan made his debut at this level, with Conor Coady skippering the side. On the same day, future red Tiago Ilori struck his only goal for Portugal at this level in the same competition as they drew 1-1 with Ukraine. 2001 - Chris Kirkland won his first England Under-21’s cap as a reds player, playing alongside future red Jermaine Pennant in their 2-1 defeat of Greece in a European Championships qualifier at Ewood Park. On the same day, future red Christian Poulsen won his eighth and last Under-21’s cap as Denmark thumped Iceland 4-0 in another qualifier in Odense. Also on the move 2020 – Three ex-reds were on the move. Winger Bobby Adekanye joined Cádiz on loan from S.S. Lazio, with forward Jerome Sinclair making a temporary switch from Watford to CSKA Sofia. Adekanye only made five appearances before his loan was ended early, with Sinclair scoring three times in 27 outings. Meanwhile, winger Kristoffer Peterson left Swansea City to sign for Fortuna Düsseldorf, having struck once in just twelve games for the Swans. On the same day, future reds forward Federico Chiesa joined Juventus on loan from Fiorentina, later making the move permanent. Also in World Cup action that day were ex-red Jim Magilton and future red Gary McAllister, while future red John Arne Riise won his ninth and last cap for Norway Under-15’s as they lost 1-0 to Scotland in a tournament game in Poland. 1999 – Ex-red Paul Dalglish bagged a brace as Scotland Under-21’s beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Paisley, with future reds recruiter Mark Burchill making his senior bow for Scotland on the same day as they beat the same nation 1-0 in a qualifier at Ibrox. 2008 – Future red Christian Benteke scored for Belgium Under-19’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Kazakhstan in Estonia. 2017 – Future red Federico Chiesa bagged a brace for Italy Under-21’s as they thrashed Hungary 6-2 in a friendly in Újpest. Emre Can, Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, future reds Alisson Becker and Andy Robertson, and ex-reds Javier Mascherano, Raheem Sterling and Luis Suárez all featured in World Cup qualifiers, with Corey Whelan and future reds Dominik Szoboszlai and Kostas Tsimikas playing at Under-21’s level.
