The start of a dynasty 1974 - Bob Paisley was appointed Manager, a fortnight after Bill Shankly’s resignation. He became Britain’s most successful boss, leading us to six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, three League Cups and five Charity Shields in just nine years in charge. In comes Milan 2001 - Milan Baroš signed from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m, although he was not granted a work permit and allowed to come to Anfield for another five months. He bagged 27 goals in 108 reds games, before moving to Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005, having helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League and Worthington Cup. To the World Cup Final 1966 - Roger Hunt played in England’s 2-1 World Cup Semi-final defeat of Portugal at Wembley. He would shortly become the first red to claim football’s top honour while with the club. Double debutants 2005 - Peter Crouch and Momo Sissoko both made their reds debuts as we won 3-1 at FBK Kaunas in the first leg of our Champions League Second Round qualifier, with Jamie Carragher nabbing his first goal for more than six years! Djibril Cissé also scored with Steven Gerrard converting a penalty. Carra said, “If I'd have known I was going to score against Kaunas I would have worn a t-shirt under my Liverpool shirt with Michael’s name on it. I want to dedicate that goal to Michael Shields and all his family who are suffering so badly right now.” Another win 2020 – We came from a goal down to win 3-1 behind closed doors at Newcastle United to finish the season on a club record 99 points, eighteen points ahead of runners up Manchester City. Dwight Gayle scored after just 25 seconds, the most recent of his five goals past us, but Virgil van Dijk headed us level, with Divock Origi and Sadio Mané both on target after the break. Rafa’s first capture 2004 - Josemi signed from Málaga for £2m, becoming new boss Rafael Benítez’s first signing. He made just 35 reds appearances at right-back before joining Villarreal in exchange for Jan Kromkamp in January 2006. Wingers on the move 2006 - Jermaine Pennant signed from Birmingham City for £6.7m. He made 81 appearances, bagging three goals before joining Real Zaragoza in July 2009 after a five-month loan spell with Portsmouth. On the same day, it was announced that Paul Anderson and Scott Carson had signed new four- and five-year contracts respectively. 2012 - Paul Anderson joined Bristol City from Nottingham Forest on a free transfer, scoring three times in 23 games for the Robins before moving to Ipswich Town in a swap deal for Jay Emmanuel-Thomas a year later. Stéph on the move 2005 - Stéphane Henchoz signed for Wigan Athletic. He had made a total of 205 reds appearances, forming a rock-solid partnership with Sami Hyypiä, helping us to claim five trophies in 2001 and another League Cup two years later. He played 32 times for the Latics before rejoining Blackburn Rovers in September 2006. Birth and death 1928 - Half-back and reds skipper Johnny Wheeler was born in Crosby. He joined his cousin Ronnie Moran at Anfield when he signed from Bolton Wanderers for £9,000 in September 1956 and made 177 appearances, bagging 23 goals. One of his greatest games came in November 1956, when he netted a four-minute hat-trick against Port Vale. He was appointed player-manager of New Brighton in May 1963, but did not take up the post, becoming Assistant Trainer at Bury instead, where he stayed until 1969. 1963 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie died. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930, moving on to Rochdale in October 1933. Justice denied 2000 - The judge in the trial of retired Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, the police officer in charge at Hillsborough, ruled that he should not have to face a retrial, after the jury could not agree on a verdict. Off the mark 2009 - Krisztián Németh bagged a brace, his first reds goals, as we thumped a Singapore League Select XI 5-0 in their National Stadium. The other goals came from Andriy Voronin, Albert Riera and Fernando Torres. 2002 - The reds thumped a Swiss XI 5-1 at their pre-season training camp. El-Hadji Diouf and Grégory Vignal both scored their first reds goals, while Neil Mellor netted a brace in his first senior appearance. Milan Baroš added the other. Starting the right way 1968 - Roger Hunt grabbed a brace as we kicked off our pre-season campaign with a 3-1 win over Linfield in Belfast. Tony Hateley bagged the other, while Ray Clemence made an early appearance as a substitute. 1995 - Stan Collymore made his reds bow as we beat Birmingham City in the pre-season T.N.T. Inter-City Challenge Cup 1-0 at St. Andrews, thanks to an Ian Rush strike. Jari in Amsterdam 2001 - Ex-Ajax star Jari Litmanen struck the only goal of the game for us against Rafael Benítez’s Valencia to send the Amsterdam ArenA crowd wild. It was a brilliant volley after a fifty-yard run and superb cross from Bernard Diomède. Leverkusen for the first time 1991 - We encountered Bayer 04 Leverkusen for the first time, holding them to a goalless draw in their Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion in a pre-season friendly. Spectators were allowed in for free to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Bayer company moving to Leverkusen. Off to a bad start 1994 - We kicked off our pre-season campaign by going down 4-1 at First Division Bolton Wanderers, with Ian Rush grabbing our late consolation. Defenders signing on 2021 – Right-back Conor Bradley signed a new contract. He has so far made five senior reds appearances. On the same day, left-back Yasser Larouci joined French side Troyes, after being released by the reds after just two senior outings. 2022 – Left-back Luke Chambers renewed his deal with the reds, making it onto the first-team bench twice in the following campaign. Taking home the bacon 1987 - The reds beat Danish side Aalborg Chang 4-0 in a friendly to celebrate their 75th anniversary. John Aldridge grabbed a brace, including one from the spot, while John Barnes netted for the second consecutive game. The scoring was completed by Ronnie Whelan. Other foreign friendlies 2018 – We beat Manchester City 2-1 in the International Champions Cup in New Jersey. Mohamed Salah equalised a minute after Leroy Sané had given City the lead, with Sadio Mané converting an injury time penalty to hand us victory. We have twice faced Linfield at Windsor Park on this day in history. 1969 - Emlyn Hughes and Ron Yeats netted as we won 2-1. 1997 - We won by the same score, with Michael Owen grabbing a brace. 1992 - Dean Saunders was on target from the spot as we lost 2-1 to AS Monaco in the Tournoi de Paris at the Parc des Princes. Keepers moving 2006 - Sander Westerveld returned to Spain to join UD Almería, after brief spells back in England with Portsmouth and Everton. He made 33 League appearances in his one season there, as they gained promotion to the top flight. On the same day, former reserves custodian Ian Dunbavin joined Accrington Stanley on a free transfer from Halifax Town. 2008 - Brad Friedel joined Aston Villa from Blackburn Rovers, after 356 games for the Ewood Park outfit. He played 131 times for the Villains before moving to Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer in June 2011. Off on loan again 2004 - Alou Diarra joined Racing Club de Lens on loan, having spent the previous two seasons with Le Havre AC and Bastia. He joined Lens permanently in June 2005 after netting twice in 34 League games during his loan spell. 2017 - Young Spanish midfielder Pedro Chirivella joined Willem II on loan, failing to score in 35 outings for the Dutch side. Alberto the champion 2003 – Alberto Aquilani won his sixteenth and last cap for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Portugal 2-0 to clinch the European Championships at this level in Liechtenstein. 2005 – Future red David Martin was in goal as England Under-19’s beat Serbia & Montenegro 3-1 in Northern Ireland to reach the Final of the same competition. 2006 - Reds right-back Antonio Barragán played as Spain Under-19’s thumped Austria 5-0 in Poland to reach the Final of the European Championships. 2018 – Adam Lewis played his sixth and last game for England Under-19’s in their 3-0 defeat by Norway in the European Championships Finals in Finland. On the same day, ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France as they lost 2-0 to Italy in the same tournament. 2017 – Diomède again managed France Under-19’s, this time to a 2-1 friendly defeat by DR Congo. 2002 - John Welsh, Jon Otsemobor and future reds Glen Johnson represented England Under-19’s as they lost 3-2 to Republic of Ireland in a European Championship Finals group game in Norway, who included Michael Foley-Sheridan, while future red Jermaine Pennant won his fifth and final cap at this level. Also on the move 1997 – Robbie Keane signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He grabbed 29 goals in 88 outings before moving to Coventry City for £6m in August 1999. 1996 - Gary McAllister joined Coventry City from Leeds United in a £3m deal. He spent four years at Highfield Road before his shock move to the reds, netting 26 times in 150 appearances. 1963 - Tony Hateley moved to Aston Villa for £22,000 from Notts County, netting 86 times in 148 games before moving to Chelsea for £100,000 in October 1966, from where he joined the reds. 1982 - Paul Walsh joined Luton Town from Charlton Athletic for £400,000. He struck 28 times in 89 games in his two years with the Hatters as they struggled in the top flight, before moving to Anfield in May 1984 for £700,000. 2007 - Don Hutchison signed for Luton Town, having been released by Coventry City the month before. He bagged just one goal in 26 outings for the Hatters. Olympian reds 2012 – Craig Bellamy netted for Great Britain as they drew 1-1 with Senegal in a group game at the Olympics at Old Trafford, with future reds Joe Allen, Steven Caulker, Sadio Mané and Daniel Sturridge also in action. Later that day in the same stadium, Luis Suárez skippered Uruguay to a 2-1 defeat of the United Arab Emirates, with Sebastián Coates also featuring. Future red Mohamed Salah also featured in the Olympics that day, scoring as Egypt lost 3-2 to Brazil in Cardiff. 2008 – Ryan Babel scored for a Netherlands Olympic XI as they beat Cameroon 2-0 in an ING Cup match in Hong Kong. Also in international action 1997 – Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason featured for Iceland Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Portugal in a European Championship Finals group game in his homeland. -
Shanks departs 1974 - Bill Shankly resigned as Manager after fifteen years in charge, leaving reds fans bemused and shocked. He had led us to three League titles, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and the Second Division championship. His final significant act as boss was to sign Arsenal forward Ray Kennedy for a club record fee of £180,000, announced the very same day. Razor went on to net 72 times in 393 reds games, helping us to claim six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982. The Wright signing 1991 - Mark Wright arrived from Derby County for £2.2m. With Alan Hansen retired, Glenn Hysén soon to go and Gary Gillespie moving on to Celtic, we were in dire need of a quality centre-back, and Wright was drafted in after his impressive displays for England at the 1990 World Cup. He notched nine times in 210 reds appearances and lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992 before retiring from playing in August 1998. Yossi signs on 2007 - Yossi Benayoun signed from West Ham United for £5m. He bagged 29 goals in 134 reds games, including hat-tricks against Beşiktaş JK, Havant & Waterlooville and Burnley, leaving for Chelsea for the same fee in July 2010. On the same day, second string winger Adam Hammill joined Southampton on loan. He made 28 appearances for the Saints that season, half of them from off the bench, without getting on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, ex-red Vladimír Šmicer signed for SK Slavia Praha. He helped his new club won their first title in twelve years, with Vlad once again suffering with injuries as he struck five times in 23 League games before retiring in May 2010. Heading off 2005 - Grégory Vignal signed for Portsmouth after just twenty senior reds games. He played seventeen times for Pompey, before moving on to Racing Club de Lens in May 2006. 2013 – Suso signed for Unión Deportiva Almería on loan. He scored three goals in 35 games, as well as providing nine assists. 2022 – Centre-half Tom Clayton left the reds to sign for Swindon Town, netting once in 35 outings during his first campaign with the Robins. On the same day, ex-reds winger Rafael Camacho joined Aris Thessaloniki on loan from Sporting Clube de Portugal, scoring three times in 32 games while in Greece. 2006 - Djibril Cissé joined Olympique de Marseille on loan. He had bagged 24 goals in 79 reds games following his club record signing for £14m two years earlier. He was recovering from a second leg break at the time but recovered to notch sixteen times in 29 outings in his first campaign with L’OM, signing on permanently for £6.3m a year later. On the same day, Dietmar Hamann joined Manchester City from Bolton Wanderers for £300,000 after just one day at the Reebok Stadium! He played 71 times for City, getting on the scoresheet just once before joining Milton Keynes Dons as Player/Coach in May 2010. 2011 - Cissé moved to S.S. Lazio from Panathinaikos for €5.8m, having helped the Greek side to a League and Cup double while netting 51 times in 89 outings. Happy birthdays 1958 - Former reds forward Michael Robinson was born in Leicester. Joe Fagan brought the Irish international to Anfield in August 1983 from Brighton & Hove Albion for £200,000. In his first season at the club he won the League title and European Cup, bagging a total of thirteen goals in 52 games before moving to Queens Park Rangers for £100,000 in December 1984. 1979 - Midfielder Danny Williams was born in Wrexham. He never broke through to the first team at Anfield and signed for his hometown club on a free transfer in March 1999. Best ever Aussie 2012 – Ex-reds left-winger Harry Kewell was named as Australia’s greatest ever player in a vote by Australian fans, players and media, having struck seventeen times in 58 senior internationals. He signed from Leeds United for £5m in July 2003, but his time at Anfield was somewhat disappointing due to a series of niggling injuries, as he bagged sixteen goals in 139 reds games before moving to Galatasaray as his contract expired in July 2008. He helped us to claim the Champions League and FA Cup in his reds career, although he limped out of both finals. Debutants galore 2008 - Keeper Diego Cavalieri, right-back Philipp Degen, centre-half Martin Kelly and forward Dani Pacheco all played their first reds games, as Yossi Benayoun bagged the only goal of our opening pre-season friendly at Tranmere Rovers. 2017 – Midfielder Pedro Chirivella struck his first reds goal as we thumped Tranmere Rovers 4-0 in our opening pre-season friendly at Prenton Park, with Marko Grujic also scoring as James Milner and Ben Woodburn both converted penalties. Keeper Kamil Grabara and forward Dominic Solanke both made their first senior appearances. 2022 – Midfielder Stefan Bajcetic, forward Fábio Carvalho, left-back Luke Chambers, forward Bobby Clark, right-back Isaac Mabaya and forward Darwin Núñez all appeared for the first time as we were thumped 4-0 by Manchester United in the Bangkok Century Cup in the Thai capital. On the world stage 2014 – Future red Gini Wijnaldum struck for the Netherlands as they beat host nation Brazil 3-0 in the World Cup Third Place Play-off in Brasilia, with ex-red Dirk Kuyt also featuring. 2007 - Young reds left-back Emiliano Insúa played for Argentina Under-20’s as they beat Poland 3-1 in Toronto to reach the Quarter-finals of the World Championship Finals. 1998 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel won his 101st and final cap for Brazil in their 3-0 defeat by France in the World Cup Final in the Stade de France. 1989 – Taffarel also played as Brazil beat Argentina 2-0 in a Copa América final round game in Rio de Janeiro. More arrivals 2002 - Bruno Cheyrou was confirmed as a reds player after receiving international clearance, joining from Lille OSC Métropole for £3.7m. He struck five times in 48 reds games before moving to Stade Rennais in June 2006, after previous loan spells with Olympique de Marseille and Girondins de Bordeaux. 2009 – Reserves left-back Chris Mavinga signed from Paris Saint-Germain. He failed to make the first team, being sold to Stade Rennais for £1m in July 2011. Mixed Euro fortunes 2012 - Suso was on the winning side as Spain Under-19’s beat France on penalties to reach the European Championships Final in Estonia. On the same day, Jack Robinson featured as England lost out to Greece at the same stage. 2015 – Future red Kostas Tsimikas played for Greece Under-19’s in their 2-0 home defeat by France in a group encounter. 2016 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-19’s as they beat France 2-1 in a group game in Germany. Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter both also featured. Bowyer on his way 2002 - It was announced that a fee had been agreed with Leeds United for the controversial capture of midfielder Lee Bowyer. He was expected to sign on at Anfield the following week, although the deal fell through after Gérard Houllier grew uncomfortable with the player’s attitude and level of commitment to Liverpool. Red learnings 2000 - Liverpool’s ground-breaking Study Support centre in the Kop stand was officially opened by Professor Michael Barber, Head of the Government’s Standards & Effectiveness Unit for Education. The Centre’s goal is to provide youngsters with opportunities to improve skills in literacy, numeracy, ICT and independent learning, as well as improving their self-esteem and confidence. 2010 – The club announced the appointment of five new staff to the Sports Science and Sports Medicine department. Phil’s sad day 2006 - The funeral of former player, Coach and Manager Phil Taylor’s wife Maisey was held at Thornton crematorium. Also on the move 2019 – Peter Crouch announced his retirement from playing. He had arrived at Anfield for £7m in July 2005, striking 42 times in 134 reds games, despite not notching in his first nineteen outings, helping us to claim the FA Cup and FA Community Shield, but was sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m in July 2008. 2017 – Ex-reds midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven joined Aberdeen from Celtic, netting sixteen goals in 72 games before moving to New York City on a free transfer in June 2019. 2015 – Right-back Glen Johnson signed for Stoke City, having been released at the end of the previous season. On the same day, ex-reserves midfielder Jordan Lussey moved to Bolton Wanderers. 2006 - Mike Marsh joined the coaching staff at Southport, one of his former clubs. 2004 - Ex-reserves keeper Ian Dunbavin joined Halifax Town on a free transfer from Shrewsbury Town. He turned out 56 times for the Shaymen before joining Accrington Stanley in the summer of 2006. 1996 – Current Chief Scout Barry Hunter joined Reading from Wrexham for £400,000 after six goals in 120 games for the Dragons. Signing on 2021 – Left-back Owen Beck signed a new contract. He has so far made two senior appearances, also sitting on the bench on another four occasions. Also in international action 2011 – Luis Súarez and future red Sebastián Coates both played for Uruguay as they beat Mexico 1-0 in a Copa América group game in Argentina. Future red Mohamed Salah featured for Egypt Under-20’s on the same day in their 1-1 friendly draw in Costa Rica. 2021 – Future reds midfielder Wataru Endō played for Japan Under-23’s in their 3-1 defeat of Honduras in Osaka. 1988 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen featured for Norway Under-17’s as they lost a tournament game 2-0 to Denmark in Poland. Young reds on trial 2002 - Three of the club’s Under-19’s were invited for trials at Third Division Torquay United. Brian McIlroy, Neil Prince and David Chambers had all recently been released from Melwood. Prince was the only one to be taken on, signing on permanently the following month. -
Happy birthdays 1971 - Former striker Stan Collymore was born in Stone. He netted 35 times in 81 reds games after signing from Nottingham Forest for a British record £8.5m fee in July 1995. He was offloaded to Aston Villa in February 2000 for £7m, where he again failed to fulfil his potential. 1985 - Momo Sissoko was born in Mont Saint Agnain, France. He signed from Valencia for £5.6m in July 2005 and helped us to claim the FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, playing 87 times and scoring just once. He had previously been signed by Rafael Benítez while he was in Spain, from Auxerre, and was sold to Juventus for £8.2m in January 2008. 1954 – Piet Hamberg was born in Winschoten in the Netherlands. He joined the reds as Academy Technical Manager in June 2007, staying in the role for two years. 1986 – Ex-reserves custodian David Martin was born in Romford. The son of West Ham United centre-back Alvin signed from MK Dons for £250,000 in January 2006 and sat on the bench nineteen times without making a senior appearance, returning to Stadium:mk in May 2010. 1980 – First-team physiotherapist Matt Konopinski was born in Leeds. He joined the club in February 2009 from Barnsley, moving on to the FA in October 2018. 1990 - Jonathan Woodgate was born in Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough. He worked as a scout for the reds during the 2016/17 season. In comes Thommo 1971 - Phil Thompson signed as a professional, the day after his seventeenth birthday. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1914 – Forward Jimmy Nicholl signed from Middlesbrough, bagging fourteen goals in 59 outings before moving on to Wishaw Thistle in 1915. He had featured in our FA Cup Final defeat to Burnley in April 1914. 2015 – Midfielder Jordan Williams signed a new contract until 2017. He made his only senior appearance in a League Cup tie against Middlesbrough in September 2014, moving on to Rochdale in June 2018. Red farewells 2011 – Fernando Torres struck his last two reds goals as we won 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Raúl Meireles’ stunning volley coming between his strikes. We opened the scoring by breaking Wolves’ offside trap, with Richard Keys and Andy Gray’s disparaging remarks about the female assistant referee on Sky leading to their eventual departure. Ex-reds reserve Adam Hammill made his debut for the home side as a substitute. 2000 – Middlesbrough held us to a dour goalless draw at Anfield, with forward Jon Newby coming off the bench to make his fourth and final reds appearance. 1977 – Left-back Brian Kettle played his fourth and final reds game as we lost 2-1 at Norwich City, giving away an early penalty that Martin Peters converted, one of his fourteen goals against us. Jimmy Neighbour doubled the lead straight after the break, before Phil Neal struck from the spot for our eventual consolation. Warnock walks 2007 - Stephen Warnock was sold to Blackburn Rovers for a fee believed to be £1.5m. He had played 67 reds games, netting just once, and turned out 109 times for Rovers, striking six times, before joining Aston Villa in August 2009. On the same day, Milan Baroš joined Olympique Lyonnais from Aston Villa in a swap deal for John Carew, after fourteen goals in 51 games for Villa. A record crowd 2006 - The then biggest crowd to watch the reds in the Premier League, of 67,874, witnessed a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United when we succumbed to a late Rio Ferdinand goal. 2002 - The previous record was just 275 supporters fewer, set when Danny Murphy grabbed a late winner as we won at Old Trafford for the second season in a row. Yet another treble 1927 - Gordon Hodgson scored one of his seventeen reds hat-tricks as we beat Derby County 3-2 at Anfield. Harry Bedford struck one of his nine goals against the reds, with Jack Whitehouse also on target as full-back Tommy Lucas played his 200th League game for the reds. In Africa 2000 - Rigobert Song played for his country as Cameroon drew 1-1 with Ghana in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in Accra. Future red Alberto Aquilani also represented his country that day. 2008 - Song also featured in a 4-2 to Egypt in another group game in Ghana. 2012 – Future red Kolo Touré played in an Africa Cup of Nations group game as Ivory Coast beat Sudan 1-0 in Equatorial Guinea. Ex-red Daniel Sjölund was also in international action that day. 2013 – Touré featured again as Togo lost 2-1 in South Africa. On the same day, Carl Medjani won his last cap as an AJ Ajaccio player as Algeria lost 1-0 to Tunisia. 2017 – Ex-red Toni Silva played for Guinea-Bissau as they lost 2-0 to Burkina Faso in a group game in Gabon. Cally’s milestone 1972 - Ian Callaghan played his 400th League game in our goalless draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers, while forward Alun Evans made his 111th and final reds appearance and winger Peter Thompson played for the 416th and last time. Southern despair 2018 – We were beaten 1-0 at Swansea City, with centre-back Alfie Mawson on target before the break. Roberto Firmino struck a post with a late header, but the Swans held on to win. 2005 - We lost 2-0 at Southampton, with David Prutton on target and future red Peter Crouch bagging the first of his four goals past us. Ex-red Jamie Redknapp also featured for the home side. On the same day, ex-red Frode Kippe played as Norway drew a friendly 1-1 in Kuwait. Other birthdays 1878 - Left-half Bill Goldie was born in Hurlford, Ayrshire. He joined his brother Archie at Anfield in November 1897 from Clyde, and bagged six goals in 174 reds appearances, helping us to our first ever League title in 1901, moving to Fulham in January 1904. 1962 - Former reserves keeper Stephen Pears was born in Brandon in County Durham. Alan Hansen scored in his 200th reds game with Ian Rush bagging a brace and Mark Lawrenson also on target. On the same day, ex-red Ian Callaghan played in his 88th FA Cup game as Crewe Alexandra lost 3-1 at home to Sc***horpe United, with 79 of these games played while with Liverpool. Stevie on his way out 2015 - Steven Gerrard announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. However, he was later dogged by persistent knee trouble and allowed to join Premiership new-boys Portsmouth on a free transfer in June 2003. 1981 – Sports Therapist Iván Ortega was born. He joined the reds in the summer of 2009 from Celta de Vigo, but moved on to Chelsea in July 2011. Red centurions 2007 - Rafael Benítez took charge of the reds for the 200th time as we struggled to break down Fulham at Anfield, before Fernando Torres struck a late opener. He made 134 appearances, notching four times and helping us to claim the FA Community Shield, but suffered from a succession of injuries before returning to his native Brazil to sign for Grêmio in May 2012. Tommy’s testimonial 1977 - Two days after we won the European Cup for the first time, Anfield hosted a testimonial match for Tommy Smith, who had intended to retire. The game featured Liverpool playing a Bobby Charlton Select XI, ending 9-9 with both Tommy Smith and Ray Clemence grabbing a brace! Jimmy Case, David Fairclough, David Johnson, Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott were all also on target. Happy birthday King Kenny 1951 - Kenny Dalglish was born in Dalmarnack, Glasgow. He signed from Celtic for £440,000 in August 1977 and bagged 172 goals in 515 games, helping us to countless honours, both as a player for which he is fêted by many as the finest ever on the pitch, and later in two spells as Manager. His greatest moments as a player include scoring the goals that clinched the European Cup at Wembley in 1978, and the first half of a League and FA Cup double at Stamford Bridge eight years later, while his efforts in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster ensure he retains an even more special place in our hearts. 1955 - Joey Jones was born in Bangor. Final outings 1939 - Left-half John Browning played his nineteenth and final reds game in our 1-1 home draw with Leicester City, with Phil Taylor bagging our late goal. 1897 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 in L4 thanks to goals from Frank Becton, Harry Bradshaw and George Allan as forward Malcolm McVean made his 126th and last reds appearance. 1893 – We beat Nelson 3-0 in a Lancashire League meeting at Anfield. Matt McQueen struck twice, with his brother Hugh also on target as keeper Sydney Ross appeared for the 21st and final time. Beating the Geordies We have twice defeated Newcastle United on this day in history. 1995 - Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush struck as we beat them 2-0 in a Premiership match at Anfield. 1899 - We won a friendly at St. James’ Park 3-1, with George Allan bagging a treble. Thumping Oldham 1944 - Jack Balmer scored four goals as we trounced Oldham Athletic 8-1 at Anfield, in a game that counted for the Wartime League Cup as well as the League. Phil Taylor and Cyril Done both added braces. 1916 - We also beat them in another Wartime League match. Dave Watson and Arthur Metcalf were on target in our 4-1 victory, with Fred Pagnam netting twice. European disappointment 1992 - We lost 2-0 at Genoa in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Fourth Round encounter. Unfortunately, we also lost the Anfield return to crash out 4-1 on aggregate. Red R.I.P.s 1959 - Left-half Tom Bromilow died on a train while returning from a scouting mission for Leicester City. He signed professional terms at Anfield in 1919, having asked for a trial straight from the army. He went on to make 375 appearances, scoring eleven times while helping us to claim two League titles in successive seasons in the 1920’s, as well as earning full international honours with England. 1964 – Forward Vic Wright died. He struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. 2021 – Forward Phil Chisnall died. He signed from Manchester United for £25,000 in April 1964, after ten goals in 47 United games. However, he never established himself at Anfield, netting twice in nine appearances, leaving for Southend United in August 1967. For Scotland 1922 - Left-back Donald McKinlay won his second and final cap for Scotland in a 2-1 victory over Northern Ireland at Celtic Park. Partick Thistle’s ex-reds keeper Ken Campbell also featured for Scotland, while Billy Lacey was playing his final game as a reds player for the away side. 1911 - Centre-half Alex Raisbeck played for the Scottish League against a Football League side. 1907 - Ex-reds inside-right George Livingstone won his second and final cap, and only one as a Rangers player, as the Scots lost 1-0 in Wales, also in the British International Championships. Reds defender George Latham was on the winning side. 2019 – Future red Calvin Ramsay played for Scotland Under-16’s as they were thumped 4-0 by Denmark in a friendly in Malta. Future reds in opposition 2014 – Alberto Moreno faced Emre Can in an Under-21’s friendly in Palencia, with Spain beating Germany 2-0, with this being Can’s last cap at this level while playing for Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Tosh leaves the Vetch 1984 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Swansea City, after just two wins in eleven games in this second spell in charge. Other reds games 2006 – Charlton Athletic held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1964 – We came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Sheffield Wednesday. Ian St. John and Willie Stevenson were on the scoresheet. This was Bill Shankly’s 200th game in charge. 1961 – We drew 2-2 in a Second Division match at Portsmouth with Alan Banks and Johnny Morrissey scoring our goals. 1911 – We lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur as Billy Minter grabbed one of his five goals past us, with Sam Hardy saving a Bobby Steel penalty. Keepers on the move 1995 - Sander Westerveld joined Vitesse Arnhem from Twente. He played 101 League games for them before moving to Anfield four years later. 2004 - Former reserves custodian Ian Dunbavin joined Morecambe on loan from fellow Conference side Shrewsbury Town on loan, making three appearances. Also on the move 1996 - Paul Stewart joined Sunderland on a free transfer following a loan period. He netted five times in 37 games, before being offloaded to Stoke City. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Bournemouth on loan from Fulham, netting twice in eight outings for the Cherries. 2019 – Former reds coach Paco Herrera was sacked as Manager of Unión Deportiva Las Palmas for the second time, having led them to only three victories in fourteen League matches. Also in international action 2010 – Chris Mavinga played for France Under-19’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Ukraine in Saint-Denis.
