Happy birthday Uncle Roy 1948 - Roy Evans was born in Bootle. One of the club’s greatest servants, he served as fan, left-back, reserves coach, Assistant Manager and then finally the top job for four years. He only made eleven first team appearances before injury cut his career short, but his time as reserves boss was incredibly successful, leading them to eleven Central League titles, including seven in nine seasons. However, his time as the main man was less glittering, as he could only claim one Coca Cola Cup. 1963 - Ronnie Rosenthal was born in Haifa. The Israeli forward made an instant impact on his arrival on loan in March 1990, with Kenny Dalglish saying, “Ronnie gave us the momentum. It was that which helped us to win the Championship.” He signed from Standard de Liège permanently that June for £1m and scored a total of 22 times in 97 reds games before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 after four years at Anfield. 1927 - Wing-half Bryan Williams was born in Liverpool. He netted five times in 34 reds games after arriving from South Liverpool at the end of the Second World War, moving on to Crewe Alexandra in May 1954, where he became a regular. 2001 – Midfielder Matteo Ritaccio was born in New York. He arrived at the Academy in August 2018, signing as a professional fifteen months later. However, he was released in January 2024. Farewell Brendan 2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park, with boss Brendan Rodgers getting the sack later that same day. Danny Ings headed us into the lead but Romelu Lukaku equalised just four minutes later, on the stroke of half time, the most recent of his five strikes past us to date. Rodgers had led us to 85 victories in his 166 games in charge, failing to win any silverware but guiding us to within a whisker of claiming the League title in 2013/14. A big day for Jones 1991 - Full-back Rob Jones signed from Crewe Alexandra for £300,000. The grandson of post-war utility man Bill made his reds bow just two days later, going on to play 243 times for the reds, before injury ended his career, famously failing to ever find the net in his time at Anfield. 1995 – He was sent off in our League Cup Second Round second leg at Sunderland after a rash tackle on Michael Gray. The home side’s Martin Smith was also dismissed after retaliating. Robbie Fowler bagged the only goal of the game to send us through 3-0 on aggregate. We wore the curious kit of gold shirts and green shorts to avoid a colour clash. Off the mark 2014 – Adam Lallana bagged his first reds strike to open the scoring on the stroke of half time as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at Anfield. Saido Berahino equalised from the spot after the break, but Jordan Henderson struck the winner. Red centurions 2022 – James Milner played his 300th reds game, and fiftieth for the reds in the UEDA Champions League, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also reaching that milestone in the competition as we beat Rangers 2-0 in a group game at Anfield. Trent opened the scoring from a free-kick, with Mohamed Salah converting a second-half penalty after Luis Díaz was fouled. Ouch 1998 - Pierluigi Casiraghi netted his only Chelsea strike. Phil Babb attempted to prevent the goal but only succeeded in wrapping his legs around a post at the Anfield Road end, causing grown men around the ground to wince in sympathy, and he was taken off shortly after. Jamie Redknapp equalised for the reds late on. 2009 – We lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, thanks to the last of Nicolas Anelka’s five strikes against the reds and a Florent Malouda goal. Italian despair 2012 – Jonjo Shelvey headed us in front against Udinese in a UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield, but the Italian side went 3-1 ahead thanks to Antonio Di Natale, a Sebastián Coates own goal and Giovanni Pasquale. Luis Suárez scored a late free-kick, but we still lost 3-2. Trebles for 1989 - Steve Staunton bagged a hat-trick as we beat Wigan Athletic 3-0 in an away League Cup tie that was switched to Anfield. He had come on in the second half as an emergency forward substitute after Ian Rush had limped off. 1941 - Cyril Done netted a treble in our 5-5 Wartime League draw at New Brighton, his third in consecutive games. Dicky Dorsett grabbed the other two. Out-gunned 2003 - We lost 2-1 at home to Arsenal, with Harry Kewell netting after a quarter of an hour, and Michael Owen suffering a shin injury. Sami Hyypiä unfortunately scored an own goal in his last game as official club captain, with Robert Pires bagging one of his four goals past us as the Gunners won for the 21st time at Anfield in the League, with only Everton responsible for us missing out on all the points more often. 1977 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless draw at Highbury. Howard makes his way 1980 - Howard Gayle made his reds bow as a substitute for David Fairclough in a 3-0 win at Manchester City. Our goals came from Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Sammy Lee. Hat-tricks against 2020 – Ollie Watkins bagged a first-half treble as we lost 7-2 at Aston Villa behind closed doors, the first of his five goals against the reds to date. Mohamed Salah and Jack Grealish each struck twice, with these being the first of Grealish’s four goals past us so far, with John McGinn and ex-Blue Ross Barkley also on target. This was the first time we had conceded seven goals since April 1963 when we lost by the same score at Tottenham Hotspur. 1919 - Billy Hibbert scored a hat-trick for Newcastle United as they beat us 3-0 at St. James’ Park, the last of his thirteen goals past us. Outside-right Harold Wadsworth made his debut in this game while inside-right Fred Pagnam featured for the 39th and final time. Duncan off 1895 – Scottish left-back Duncan McLean was sold to St. Bernard's. He made his reds bow in our very first game having remained when Everton departed Anfield. He bagged four goals in 82 games, helping us to the Second Division title before returning north of the border to join Edinburgh St. Bernard’s in October 1895, with whom he won two full international caps. Happier days against the Geordies Our three other League meetings with Newcastle United on this day in history have all resulted in victories. 1961 - Kevin Lewis and Roger Hunt struck as we won 2-0 at Anfield, our twelfth straight game unbeaten since the start of this promotion season. 1952 - Jack Smith netted a brace as we won 5-3. Billy Liddell, Kevin Baron and Bob Paisley grabbed the other goals. George Robledo struck the last two of his five goals past us, with Ken Prior also netting for the visitors 1930 - We won 4-0 on Tyneside, thanks to a Jim Smith brace, Gordon Hodgson’s hundredth reds strike and outside-right Dick Edmed’s 46th and final reds goal. Shanks thumps the reds 1958 - Bill Shankly’s Huddersfield Town trounced us 5-0 at Leeds Road in a Second Division fixture. Alan A’Court made his 200th reds appearance in this game. Derek Hawksworth struck a brace, with Les Massie scoring one of his four goals against the reds, and Ken Taylor and Ramon Wilson also on the scoresheet. A derby win 1924 - Archie Rawlings struck the only goal of the game at Goodison Park after just three minutes. A fair old win 1967 - Ron Yeats and Roger Hunt were on target as we beat Swedish side Malmö FF 2-1 at Anfield in a Fairs Cup First Round match to progress 4-1 on aggregate. Dag Szepanski bagged a late consolation for the visitors. Mixed fortunes against the Owls 1902 - We beat The Wednesday 4-2 at Anfield thanks to a Sam Raybould brace, including a penalty, and goals from George Livingstone and Arthur Goddard. Harry Chapman scored one of his six goals past us, with Fred Spiksley nabbing the last of his four. Keeper Bill Perkins reached a century of League games for the reds. 1913 - We visited Owlerton in another top-flight encounter, with full-back Bob Crawford bagging our consolation from the spot as we were thumped 4-1. This was his only goal in 115 reds games, while outside-right Fred Staniforth was making the first of just three reds appearances while inside-right Jimmy Stewart appeared for the 63rd and final time. Sam Kirkman bagged one of his four goals against us, with Andre Wilson, George Robertson and Jack Burkinshaw all also netting. Internationals on target 1998 - Future red Milan Baroš netted for the Czech Republic Under-18’s in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying win in Armenia. 2001 - Future red El-Hadji Diouf struck as Senegal beat Japan 2-0 in a friendly on his home ground in Lens. Salif Diao also featured. On the same day, future reds coach Gary O’Neil played for England Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Russia in a friendly in Barnsley. 1947 – Future reds forward Sammy Smyth bagged a brace as Ireland beat Scotland 2-0 in the British International Championships at Windsor Park, with Billy Liddell on the losing side. Bosses against each other 1941 - Future reds boss Don Welsh netted as England beat Scotland 2-0 in a Wartime International at Wembley. Bill Shankly was on the losing side. Sami on home soil 1995 - Sami Hyypiä won his seventh cap for Finland, his first on home soil, as Turkey held them to a goalless friendly draw in Helsinki. It was his final cap as a Myllykosken Pallo-47 player, before he joined Willem II in the Netherlands. For Don 1951 - We took part in a testimonial match for Rhyl Athletic centre-forward Don Spendlove, with the reds winning 3-0 at Belle Vue. Jack Balmer struck twice with John Heydon also netting. Durnin for the reds 2006 - Liverpool and Celtic drew a charity legends match at Celtic Park 2-2, with the reds’ goals coming from John Durnin and Steve McManaman. On the same day, young Danish centre-back Daniel Agger was named as the PFA Fans Player of the Month for September. On the move 2006 - David Hodgson was sacked as Manager of Darlington after 51 victories in his 144 games in charge of this third spell with the Quakers. On the same day, Paul Ince’s playing contract with Swindon Town was cancelled by mutual consent, although he remained on the coaching staff for a few more weeks before taking over as Manager at Macclesfield Town. 2012 - Richard Money was appointed Cambridge United boss. He was sacked in November 2015, having guided them to the FA Trophy and promotion back into the Football League. 2013 – Ex-reds reserves forward Nathan Eccleston joined Carlisle United on loan from Blackpool, playing three times without scoring. 2022 – Right-back Josh Davidson signed pro terms with the reds, having been at the Academy since the age of six. Song at last 2000 - Rigobert Song skippered Cameroon, winning his final cap as a reds player and being booked as they drew a friendly with France 1-1 at the Stade de France. This was his 49th cap to date. Sad day 2010 – Joe Fagan’s widow Lil died at a nursing home in Lincolnshire, aged 92. 2016 – Welsh left-winger Mervyn Jones died. He was one of the smallest players to ever play for the club at just five feet four inches. He signed from Bangor City in November 1951, moving on to Southampton in July 1953 after just five reds outings. Other reds games 1986 – We beat Wimbledon 3-1 at Plough Lane. Ian Rush struck twice with Jan Mølby also netting, with all the goals coming in the second half. 1975 – Brian Hall and Jimmy Case struck as we beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield. The visitors’ coach broke down on the M62, meaning they arrived at the ground less than half an hour before kick-off. 1969 – Nottingham Forest held us to a 1-1 draw in L4 as we benefitted from a Bob Chapman own goal. 1947 – We lost 3-1 at Middlesbrough with Jack Balmer scoring our goal. Mickey Fenton netted two of his nine goals past us, with Johnny Spuhler also on the scoresheet. Four apiece 1986 - Steve McMahon missed a penalty but struck four goals as we recorded the equal biggest ever win in the League Cup, thumping Fulham 10-0. Ian Rush and John Wark both netted braces with the other goals coming from Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol, while Rush also struck the post twice. Both managers played in this game, with Kenny Dalglish lining up against the Cottagers’ new player/manager Ray Lewington. 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged four in our 5-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, his hundredth reds game, with Steve Harkness nabbing our other goal late on. 1939 - We also entertained the Trotters, with Jack Balmer bagging a brace and Matt Busby also on target in a 3-0 friendly victory. Jonjo off 2012 - We lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Anfield, with Jonjo Shelvey somewhat harshly dismissed in the first half, and Fabio Borini having to go off injured at half-time. Steven Gerrard put us ahead straight after the break, but Rafael da Silva equalised before Robin van Persie converted a late, soft penalty to secure victory, one of his seven goals past us. Martin Kelly suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in this game. The first Irish red 1970 - Steve Heighway became the first ever red to represent the Republic of Ireland in their 2-0 friendly defeat at home to Poland, winning the first of his 33 caps less than a month after his senior reds debut. 1992 - Torben Piechnik won his first cap as a reds player, and tenth to date, as Denmark were held to a goalless draw by Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier in Vilnius. Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his twentieth cap on the same day as Norway beat the Netherlands in another qualifier in Oslo. Reds sold 1993 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper left Anfield after 73 reds games to join Newcastle United for £550,000. He made thirty appearances for the Toon before retiring from the game. 1982 – Forward Colin Russell moved on to Huddersfield Town. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. 1920 - Scottish international centre-forward Tom Miller was sold to Manchester United for £2,000, after 56 goals in 146 reds games, including appearing in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. He had been suspended for his part in the 1915 match-fixing scandal involving the reds and the Old Trafford side. Sam English nabbed a brace with Alf Hanson also on the scoresheet. 1950 - Centre-half Joe Cadden made his reds bow in our 2-1 defeat at Fulham, with Billy Liddell netting. 1957 - Winger Johnny Morrissey debuted in our 2-1 win at Stoke City, with Louis Bimpson and Tony Rowley grabbing the goals, and Geoff Twentyman putting through his own net. Mo again 2017 – Mohamed Salah scored in his third consecutive game as we won 3-2 in the League at Leicester City, just four days after being knocked out of the League Cup at the same venue. Philippe Coutinho also scored before Shinji Okazaki pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time. Jordan Henderson restored our two-goal advantage, but Jamie Vardy responded immediately with the sixth of his ten goals past us to date. Simon Mignolet then saved a Vardy spot-kick to ensure victory. Penalties galore 2014 – After a 2-2 draw, our League Cup Third Round tie with Middlesbrough at Anfield resulted in a 14-13 win on penalties, a club, competition and joint English professional record, with even keeper Simon Mignolet amongst the scorers. Midfielder Jordan Rossiter opened the scoring on his debut, with Jordan Williams making his only senior appearance. Adam Reach levelled to send the game into extra time before Suso struck his only goal in his last game for the club. However, Patrick Bamford converted a stoppage time spot kick to send the match to a shoot-out. 2015 – We beat League Two side Carlisle United 3-2 on penalties after another Third Round tie ended 1-1 after extra time. Keeper Ádám Bogdán saved three of the spot kicks on his reds bow while centre-half Martin Škrtel played his 300th reds game. Danny Ings had given us the lead before Derek Asamoah equalised before half time. Happy birthday Fred 1895 - Outside-left Fred Hopkin was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. He netted twelve times in 360 reds games after signing from Manchester United for £2,800 in May 1921, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s before re-joining former club Darlington in August 1931. On the same day, a benefit match was held for Matt McQueen at Anfield. He played 105 times for the reds between 1892 and 1899, and later became a director, before managing the side for five years in the 1920’s. An England International XI beat the reds 3-0, with Sheffield United’s Harry Hammond bagging a treble. 1931 – Welsh international centre-forward Des Palmer was born in Swansea. He signed from his hometown club in March 1959, in a £15,000 deal with right-half Roy Saunders moving in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury on his reserves bow, moving on to Johannesburg Ramblers in 1960. 2005 – Right-back Josh Davidson was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in October 2022. First goal against 1893 - Centre-forward David Henderson scored on his reds debut as we beat Small Heath 3-1, as we conceded our first ever League goal in our fourth match, netted by Caesar Jenkyns, with Jimmy Stott grabbing a brace. Willie signs on 1931 – Scottish right-back Willie Steel signed from St. Johnstone for £1,000. He failed to score in 128 reds games before being sold to Birmingham City for £5,000 in March 1935. Derby wins We have twice beaten Everton in other games on this day in history. 1989 - Ian Rush netted a brace to reach 150 League goals for the reds after John Barnes had equalised as we won 3-1 at Goodison, with ex-reds reserve Mike Newell having put the Toffees in front with one of his eight strikes against the reds. 1967 - Roger Hunt grabbed the only goal of the game at Anfield. This was our 2,500th League game. Double century 2006 - Mark González struck our 200th League goal against Tottenham Hotspur after the ball came back off the post from a failed Craig Bellamy tap-in, before Dirk Kuyt and John Arne Riise netted to complete a 3-0 victory. Not bribed 1922 – Before our 3-0 home League defeat of Burnley, keeper Elisha Scott, centre-half Walter Wadsworth and centre-forward Dick Johnson had all been offered £10 to let the visitors win. However, they reported this attempt to the Club Secretary, which was later dismissed as a hoax by the police. Dick Forshaw bagged a brace, with Harry Chambers also on target as forward Billy Lacey made his 200th League appearance for the reds. All sung out 2000 - Rigobert Song played his 38th and final reds game as we were held 1-1 by Sunderland at Anfield. Robbie Fowler played his 200th League game, with Michael Owen bagging our equaliser after Kevin Phillips had netted for the visitors. Award winners 2019 - Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were both named in the FIFA FIFPRO Men’s World 11 at The Best FIFA Football Awards in Milan, with Alisson named as The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper and Jürgen Klopp as The Best FIFA Men’s Coach, following UEFA Champions League glory in Madrid. Management moves 1998 - Steve McMahon left as Swindon Town boss by mutual consent after 201 games in charge, during which they were relegated but immediately bounced back as Second Division champions. 2010 - Paul Dalglish left as Head Coach of Tampa Bay by mutual consent, after they had lost 3-0 to Montreal which knocked them out of a play-off spot. 2011 – Dean Saunders was appointed Manager of Doncaster Rovers. However, they were relegated from the Championship in his first season in charge. He remained in charge until January 2013 when he left to take over at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Internationals on target 2001 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both netted for the French Under-17’s in their 2-1 defeat of reigning champions Brazil in the World Championships Quarter-final, in The Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago. 2013 – Harry Wilson scored for Wales Under-17’s in their 5-5 European Championships qualifying draw with Hungary in Slovenia. 2022 – Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as Egypt beat Niger 3-0 in a friendly in Alexandria. Darwin Núñez won his first cap as a reds player as Uruguay lost 1-0 to Iran in Austria, with Luis Suárez appearing for the first time since re-joining Club Nacional de Football. Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling represented England for the first time since moving to Chelsea in their 1-0 UEFA Nations League defeat in Italy and Ryan Gravenberch won his first cap since moving to Bayern München as the Netherlands Under-21’s won a friendly 2-1 in Belgium. Disappointment against the Baggies We have twice faced West Bromwich Albion in the First Division on this day in history, and have yet to win. 1911 - Jack Parkinson was on target as we lost 3-1 at Anfield. 1978 - Kenny Dalglish netted an opportunist equaliser in our 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns. This was Kenny Dalglish’s fiftieth League win as reds boss, coming in his 85th game - still the best record of any reds boss. Ronnie Whelan played his 200th League game for the reds that day. Happy birthday Ox 1993 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was born in Portsmouth. He signed from Arsenal for £35m in August 2017, netting eighteen times in 146 appearances before being released in the summer of 2023. He made it back from serious injury to sit on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019 and helping us to claim the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Clem departs 1981 – Ray Clemence was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £300,000. He had arrived from Sc***horpe United for £18,000 in June 1967, usurping Tommy Lawrence as first choice number one after two years. He went on to make 665 reds appearances, winning five League titles, an FA Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and four FA Charity Shields in his fourteen years at Anfield. Also moving on 1974 - Centre-half Larry Lloyd was sold to Coventry City for £240,000. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining the reds from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. 1976 – Kevin Keegan confirmed that the upcoming season would be his final one at Anfield. He struck twenty times in 57 outings in this campaign, helping us to claim the European Cup and League title, and reach the FA Cup Final. 1991 – David Speedie left the reds to join Blackburn Rovers. He had struck six times in fourteen outings since signing from Coventry City for £675,000 seven months earlier. Dismissals galore 2010 – Joe Cole was sent off for a challenge on Laurent Koscielny just before half-time in our Anfield meeting with Arsenal. David N’Gog put us in front immediately after the break, with the lead lasting until the last minute when Marouane Chamakh diverted a cross against the post and Pepe Reina spilled the rebound into his own net. Koscielny was then sent off for a second bookable offence in injury-time. This turned out to be Javier Mascherano’s 139th and final reds game. 2022 - Darwin Núñez was dismissed in our 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield. Wilfred Zaha put the Eagles in front before the break, but the Uruguayan was sent off for headbutting Joachim Andersen. Luis Díaz bagged the equaliser, Other birthdays 1988 – Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi was born in Beni-Boughafar. He signed from Dutch side SC Heerenveen for £2.4m in August 2012, failing to score in twelve appearances before spending a season and a half on loan at Stoke City. He was sold to UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al Ahli for a reported £4.7m in January 2015. 1905 - Centre-forward Tommy Reid was born in Motherwell. He signed from Clydebank for £1,000 in April 1926 and bagged an impressive thirty goals in 55 games before moving to Manchester United in February 1929. Off the mark 2017 – Trent Alexander-Arnold scored his first senior goal as we won 2-1 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League qualifier. Simon Mignolet saved a penalty, with forward Dominic Solanke making his reds bow as we benefited when Havard Nordtveit inadvertently diverted a James Milner cross into his own net. 2007 - Yossi Benayoun made his reds debut as Andriy Voronin’s first reds strike proved to be the only goal of the first leg of our Champions League qualifier in Toulouse, who became our hundredth different opponents in European competition. Happy birthday Boudewijn 1976 - Bolo Zenden was born in Maastricht in the Netherlands. He signed on a free transfer in July 2005 after his one-year contract with Middlesbrough had expired. He notched twice in 47 senior reds games, as injury hampered his career at Anfield. He helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, as well as reach the Champions League Final in his brief time with the reds. Bolo left the club in July 2007 to join Olympique de Marseille. 2021 – Former Director Terry Smith died at Arrowe Park Hospital in Birkenhead. He was on the board from 1992 until 2007. Charity at first 1964 - We played in our first FA Charity Shield, only drawing 2-2 with West Ham United at Anfield. Gordon Wallace and Gerry Byrne twice gave us the lead, with John Byrne and Geoff Hurst both netting equalisers, with the latter being one of his nine strikes against the reds. The trophy was shared between the two clubs, as this was in the days before extra-time and penalty shoot-outs. Phil Chisnall made his reds bow in this game when he became the first ever substitute in senior English football, replacing Alf Arrowsmith after just a quarter of an hour, who had suffered a serious knee injury. Red defenders on the way out 1991 - Gary Gillespie was sold to his boyhood heroes Celtic for £925,000. He had been Joe Fagan’s first signing, helping us to three League titles in his eight injury-ravaged years at Anfield, scoring sixteen times in 214 appearances. 2002 - Young full-back Stephen Wright joined Sunderland for £3m, after just 21 reds games. He netted twice in 105 games for them, with injuries blighting his time there, and was released in May 2008. Double capture 2005 - Liverpool confirmed the signings of young centre-backs Godwin Antwi from Real Zaragoza and Miki Roqué from U.E. Lleida. Both featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup winning campaign in 2006, but only made one senior appearance between them, when Roque made a late cameo at Galatasaray in December 2006. 1996 - Patrik Berger signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for £3.25m, following an impressive Euro ’96. He scored 35 times in 196 reds games, before joining Portsmouth in June 2003. 1983 – Winger Brian Mooney signed from Home Farm for £20,000. He only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986, moving on to Preston North End in November 1987. 1970’s League wins We twice played League games on this day in the 1970’s, winning them both. 1970 - We won 2-1 at Burnley, with Alun Evans and Emlyn Hughes on target. 1972 - We beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to strikes from John Toshack and Steve Heighway. Ex-reds on the move 1997 - Ian Rush signed for Newcastle United on a free transfer from Leeds United. He only made fourten appearances for the Magpies, scoring twice, including one that made him the all-time top scorer in the FA Cup, with 44 goals in the competition. 1985 - Gary McAllister joined Leicester City from Motherwell along with clubmate Ally Mauchlen for a combined £250,000. He struck 52 times in 225 appearances for the Foxes, before joining Leeds United for £1m in July 1990. 2003 - Steve Staunton joined Coventry City on a free transfer from Aston Villa. He notched four times in 75 games for the Sky Blues before joining Walsall two years later. 2011 – Robbie Keane joined LA Galaxy from Tottenham Hotspur for £3.5m, so far bagging 97 goals in 145 outings for the American outfit and becoming their captain. Losing finalists 1982 - We lost the Final of the Málaga Tournament to the home side. We drew 1-1 after extra time, with our goal coming from Alan Kennedy, but lost the penalty shoot-out 4-2. He narrowly failed to take them to the European Championships Finals in 2008, as they fell just one goal short of reaching their first ever major tournament. He chose not to renew his contract when it expired in November 2007, taking over at Fulham the following month. 2020 - Jürgen Klopp was named Premier League Manager of the Season for 2019-20, having led us as we romped to the Premier League title. Last-gasp heartache 1989 - Having already claimed the FA Cup in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster, we only had to avoid defeat at home to Arsenal by two clear goals or more to clinch our second double in four seasons. The Gunners took the lead in the second half when Alan Smith was judged to have headed in from an indirect free-kick, one of his nine goals against the reds. We held on until stoppage time, when Michael Thomas burst through to grab the decisive, heart-breaking second and take the title back to Highbury for the first time since 1971. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 300th League game for the club. A Busby birthday 1909 - Right-half Sir Matt Busby was born on this day in Orbiston, Lanarkshire. He joined the reds from Manchester City for £8,000 in March 1936, making 122 appearances for us, many as captain, notching three times. He was appointed as coach and Assistant Manager to George Kay at Anfield in May 1944, but he was released by the club the following February after disagreements with the board, taking over as Manager of Manchester United a few days later. 1991 – Reserves left-back Chris Mavinga was born in Meaux, France. He signed from Paris St. Germain in July 2009 but was sold to Stade Rennais for £1m two years later, having failed to break through to the first team. 1896 – Scottish left-back James Penman was born in Kelty, Fife. He signed from Glasgow Ashfield in 1919, but only played once before returning to his homeland to sign for Lochgelly United in 1921. Final despair 2018 – We lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv, as keeper Loris Karius had a personal nightmare in his 49th and final game for the club, with Mohamed Salah being forced off with injury after just half an hour. Karim Benzema scored one of his seven goals past us shortly after half time, but Sadio Mané levelled just four minutes later. A Philly dozen 1946 - We trounced a Philadelphia Select of American League side 12-0 in a friendly in the Yellow Jacket Stadium. Cyril Done struck four times, with Jack Balmer bagging a hat-trick and Phil Taylor and Willie Fagan both netting braces, and Bob Priday rounding out the scoring. Opening a new stadium 1978 - We played a game to commemorate the opening of the new Al Nasr Stadium in the United Arab Emirates, beating Al Nasr Club 5-0. Our scorers were fairly unusual, with substitute Colin Irwin and Ray Kennedy both bagging braces, and Alan Hansen also on target. 1980 - We returned to the Middle East to beat a Bahrain XI 2-1 on the Three Fives Gulf Football Tour. This time, Howard Gayle and Graeme Souness got on the scoresheet. Signing on 2014 - Brendan Rodgers signed a new contract, having just led the reds to within a whisker of the League title. However, the team regressed and he was sacked in October 2015. 2015 - Centre-half Kolo Touré signed a new contract, notching just once in 71 reds games before moving on to join Rodgers at Celtic in July 2016 after this deal expired. Happy birthday Vlad 1973 - Vladimír Šmicer was born in Verneřice, Děčín in Czechoslovakia. He made 184 reds appearances following his £3.75m transfer from Racing Club de Lens, scoring nineteen times, including a crucial strike in Istanbul. He signed for us on his 26th birthday, although he did not officially become a Liverpool player until 1st July 1999, and left for Girondins de Bordeaux in June 2005, having helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. 1965 - Nicky Tanner was born in Bristol. He signed from Bristol Rovers for £20,000 in August 1988 and made a total of 59 appearances for the reds under Graeme Souness, netting his only goal at Goodison Park in December 1991. Sami’s farewell 2009 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield in our final game of the season, with Xabi Alonso playing his 210th and final reds game and Sami Hyypiä making an emotional farewell after his 464th and last appearance for the club. Fernando Torres headed in the opener with his fiftieth reds goal, in just his 84th game. We extended our lead after Alan Hutton deflected in a Dirk Kuyt effort to register our 150th own goal, before ex-red Robbie Keane reduced the deficit with the most recent of his five goals past us. He twice got us into trouble, firstly when we made an illegal approach to sign him from Queen’s Park in September 1911. He was then involved in the 1915 match-fixing scandal with Manchester United. He played 113 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, moving on to Port Vale in May 1920. New York friendlies We have twice played friendlies in New York on this day in history. 1953 - We beat 1. UEFA Cup glory 1976 - We claimed the UEFA Cup for the second time as we drew 1-1 at Club Brugge to triumph 4-3 on aggregate. Kevin Keegan equalised just five minutes after Raoul Lambert’s penalty had put the Belgians ahead, following Tommy Smith’s handball. This result came about despite Bob Paisley being without seven first-team players for ten of the fifteen days between the preceding final League game of the season and this match, due to the British International Championships. Carra’s farewell 2013 – Jamie Carragher played his 737th and last reds game as Philippe Coutinho struck the only goal of Queens Park Rangers’ visit to Anfield. Carra nearly rounded his career off with a rare goal as he struck the upright with a long-distance shot. Pepe Reina appeared for the 394th and last time as Stewart Downing also played his final game for the club, his 91st, while winger Jordon Ibe made his reds bow. In comes Sami 1999 - Sami Hyypiä signed from Willem II for £2.6m. He made 464 reds appearances, many as captain, and notched 35 times, helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups before joining Bayer 04 Leverkusen in June 2009. King Billy on target 1955 - Billy Liddell scored as Scotland lost 4-1 to Austria in a friendly in Vienna. Future reds keeper Tommy Younger also played. For Keith 1982 - We took part in a testimonial match for Alan Kennedy’s brother Keith, beating a Bury Select XI 8-7 at Gigg Lane. Keith Kennedy came on as a substitute for the reds and scored two goals. David Johnson also struck twice, with Craig Johnston, Steve Ogrizovic and Bury’s Paul Hilton and Craig Madden all also netting for the reds. Pepe wed 2006 - Pepe Reina married Yolanda in Córdoba, just six days after helping us to claim the FA Cup against West Ham United in Cardiff. Birth and death 1980 - Ex-reserves defender Neil Murphy was born in Liverpool. He never made our first-team, and was last seen playing for West Cheshire League side Maghull as well as working as a fireman. 2011 – Reserves keeper Frank Lane died. He signed from Tranmere Rovers for £15,000 in September 1971, but only made two first-team appearances, deputising for Ray Clemence. Unfortunately, he distinguished himself for all the wrong reasons on his debut in September 1972 by safely catching a deep cross from Derby County’s Alan Hinton and then stepping backwards over his own goal-line, to help us on our way to a 2-1 defeat. Winning at sea 1935 – We beat Marino 5-3 in Gran Canaria, with Dave Wright and Tosh Johnson each netting twice and Fred Howe also on target. On the move again 2015 – Brazilian midfielder Fabinho joined AS Monaco from Rio Ave, having already spent two seasons on loan with the French side. The birth of a great keeper 1940 - Tommy ‘The Flying Pig’ Lawrence was born in Dailly, Ayrshire. The legendary keeper signed professional terms in October 1957 and played 390 times for us, winning two League title medals and an FA Charity Shield as well as being a member of the 1965 FA Cup winning side. He left the club in November 1971 to join Tranmere Rovers. 1929 - Centre-forward Louis Bimpson was born in Rainford. He scored 39 goals in his 102 first-team appearances after signing on a free transfer from Burscough in January 1953. He moved on to Blackburn Rovers in November 1959. 1984 - Ex-reserves forward Mark Peers was born in St. Helens. He never made it into our first team and is currently playing for Canterbury United in New Zealand. The title clinched at Anfield again and again 1977 - We retained the League title, holding West Ham United to a goalless draw at Anfield, to win the championship for the tenth time. 1995 - Kenny Dalglish’s Blackburn Rovers side clinched the League despite losing 2-1 at Anfield, as Manchester United failed to beat West Ham United at Upton Park. Alan Shearer struck one of his eight goals past us before John Barnes equalised, with Jamie Redknapp scoring the goal that might have cost Rovers the League, had the Irons not held on for a draw. We therefore finished the season in fourth spot. Up for the cup 2022 – We claimed the FA Cup for the eighth time as our Wembley meeting with Chelsea ended goalless after extra time, with both sides hitting the woodwork. We won 6-5 on penalties, with James Milner, Thiago Alcântara, Roberto Firmino and Trent Alexander-Arnold all converting before Sadio Mané’s spot-kick was saved. First and last 2023 – We beat Fulham by a single goal in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield, despite being 3-2 down with less than three minutes of normal time remaining. Ex-red Harry Wilson levelled before Alexis Mac Allister struck his first goal for the club, a long-range special. However, Kenny Tete equalised in first-half stoppage time. Bobby De Cordova-Reid headed the Cottagers into the lead with ten minutes on the clock. Sadly, Joël Matip had to go off injured in what was to be his final outing for the club. Ex-reds loaned out 1999 - Gary Ablett joined Second Division Wycombe Wanderers on loan from Birmingham City. He scored once in seven first-team outings, and later signed permanently for the Cumbrians. Award winners 2008 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year for the seventh time in ten years. 2018 - Mohamed Salah was named as the Football Supporters' Association Men's Player of the Year for the first time, winning it again in 2021 and 2023. Birthdays galore 1954 - Midfielder Jimmy Case was born in Liverpool. He signed from South Liverpool for a bargain £500 in May 1973 and bagged 46 goals in 269 reds games, helping us to claim three European Cups, four League titles, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields, before joining Brighton & Hove Albion for £350,000 in August 1981. 1863 - Matt McQueen was born in Harthill, Lanarkshire. He arrived from Leith Athletic in October 1892 and bagged seven goals in 103 games for the reds, playing in every position on the park including 41 games in goal, helping us to claim the Second Division title twice, once while as a keeper. He moved on to Heart Of Midlothian in 1899 but later served the reds as a Director, and then as Manager for five years in the 1920’s, leading us to our fourth League title in 1923. 1958 - Howard Gayle was born in Toxteth. The first black player to represent Liverpool in modern times, he signed professional terms in November 1977 and notched once in five first-team appearances before moving on to Birmingham City in January 1983 for £75,000. 2013 – Under-23’s Assistant Coach Gary O’Neil was born in Beckenham. He had enjoyed a successful playing career with the likes of Portsmouth and Middlesbrough, retiring in the summer of 2019. He joined the reds in August 2020, leaving the following February to take over as Senior First Team Coach at Bournemouth. Two keepers also share a birthday today. 1971 - Brad Friedel was born in Bay Village, Ohio. He made 31 first-team appearances for us after signing from US side Columbus Crew for £1m in December 1997, moving to Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer in November 2000. 1973 - Pegguy Arphexad was born in Guadeloupe. Our former reserve custodian signed on a free transfer in July 2000 but only played six senior reds games, although he claimed six winners’ medals from the bench in his time at Anfield, before moving on to Coventry City in August 2003 after his contract had expired. The Saint departs 1971 - Ian St. John signed for Coventry City after a spell with Hellenic in South Africa. He had notched 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final. He had also helped us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield since his arrival from Motherwell in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. Euro disappointment 2016 – Daniel Sturridge gave us a half-time lead in the UEFA Europa League Final against Sevilla in Basel, but we collapsed after the break to lose 3-1 with Jorge Moreno bagging a brace to add to a Kévin Gameiro strike. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in January 1966 and struck nineteen goals for the reserves in 1968/69, but only played three senior games, without finding the back of the net. Other reds signings 1927 - Forward Tom Devlin signed from Preston North End for £250. He was unable to make the first-team, unlike his brother, centre-forward Willie, who was at Anfield at the same time. He moved on to Swindon Town in July 1928. 1985 - Reserves defender Alex Watson signed for the reds as a professional. He only made nine first-team appearances, including our 1988 FA Charity Shield win, before joining Bournemouth in January 1991 for £150,000. The end of the road for A’Court 1963 - Alan A’Court played his 354th and final League game as we lost 2-0 at Aston Villa in a game postponed from Boxing Day to finish the season in eighth place with George Graham netting the first of his four goals past us and Bobby Thomson also on target. First and last caps 1935 - Ex-reds defender Tom Gardner won his second and final cap as England beat the Netherlands 1-0 in a friendly in Amsterdam. 1938 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won the first of his six caps for Ireland in their 2-2 friendly draw with Czechoslovakia in Prague. 1939 – O’Mahoney played again as Ireland again drew 2-2 in a friendly, this time with Hungary in Budapest. 1950 - Bill Jones made his second and final senior appearance for England as they beat Belgium 4-1 in a friendly in Brussels. His grandson Rob went on to win eight full caps for England. 1949 - Bill also played for his country, when England B beat the Netherlands 4-0 in an unofficial international in Amsterdam. 2002 - Future red Djibril Cissé made his senior international debut as a substitute in France’s 2-1 defeat by Belgium at the Stade de France. On the same day, Vladimír Šmicer scored the only goal of the game as the Czech Republic beat World Cup-bound Italy in Prague, his twentieth senior goal for his country. He had made just two starts for the Addicks, plus a further ten appearances from the bench. His Charlton debut had been at home to the reds, as they won 1-0 following Jamie Carragher’s dubious dismissal. 2000 - Mike Marsh signed for Southport from Kidderminster Harriers on a free transfer. He netted seven times in 37 games as they just missed out on promotion from the Conference. 2020 – Nigel Clough brought his second spell as Manager of Burton Albion to a close by mutual consent, due to the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. 2021 - Roy Hodgson announced he would leave as Manager of Crystal Palace at the end of the season. He went on to nab 37 goals in 112 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1986, although he missed the run-in due to ruptured ankle ligaments. He left Anfield to sign for Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000 in February 1988. The youngsters claim a trophy 1996 - We won the FA Youth Cup for the first of four times to date. We beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield, to claim the trophy 4-1 on aggregate. Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen featured for the reds. Setting records 1979 - Our 3-0 win at Leeds United was our thirtieth League victory of the season, one behind Tottenham Hotspur’s record from 1960/61. David Johnson bagged a brace either side of a Jimmy Case strike in a game originally postponed from two months earlier. We therefore ended the League season having only conceded sixteen goals in all, a record that stood until 2004/05 with a then record 68 points, having clinched our eleventh League title a week earlier. We also netted a total of 85 League goals, so claiming a £50,000 prize from a national newspaper for scoring more than two goals per game across the season. This was our thirteenth away League win of the season, equalling a club record from 1904/05, and our ninth straight win at The Hawthorns. Crossing the park 1895 - Forward Fred Geary signed from Everton for £60, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. Into the park 2002 - Liverpool Football Club announced their first set of plans for a new stadium in Stanley Park, which it was said would hold 55,000 supporters. The new stadium was scheduled to cost between £60m and £70m to build and it was claimed that it could even be ready for the start of the 2005/06 season. These plans have now been moth-balled. A treble for the Saint 1964 - Ian St. John scored a hat-trick as we beat Mexican side Monterrey 3-0 in a friendly in Chicago. Heading east 1991 - We played our first ever game in Singapore, drawing 1-1 with Arsenal in the Caltex Cup, with Ian Rush on the scoresheet. The game went into extra-time, but we lost 4-3 on penalties in the National Stadium. 1961 - Alan A’Court netted for England in an FA Tour game in Singapore that ended in a 9-0 rout. Manchester City’s George Hannah bagged a treble. Facing the Mancs 1919 – We lost 1-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford in a game staged in aid of the National Footballers’ War Fund. In and outs 1909 – Welsh international right-half Maurice Parry left the reds to join Partick Thistle. He had scored four times in 221 reds games since arriving from Brighton United in August 1900. He later spent time coaching back at Anfield. 1935 - Right-back Bob Done was sold to Reading for £150. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games after signing from his hometown club Runcorn in April 1926. 1982 – Centre-half John McGregor signed from Queen's Park, failing to break through before moving on to Rangers in May 1987, with whom he won the League Cup. 2020 – First-team coach Jacques Crevoisier died. He worked under Gérard Houllier for two years after the departure of Patrice Bergues. Happy birthday cobber 1974 – Former Head of Fitness & Conditioning Darren Burgess was born in Sydney. He joined the club after the 2010 World Cup, but moved back down under in September 2012. On the move again 2005 - Ex-red Patrik Berger agreed to sign for Aston Villa from Portsmouth on a free transfer on 1st July. He had notched eight times in sixty Pompey games, but turned out just 32 times for Villa, netting twice. He was released in May 2008, returning home to join Sparta Praha. 2010 – Ex-reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević was released by Leicester City, having failed to make the first team since making his loan move permanent. 2012 – Ex-reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall signed for Morecambe, so far netting twice in 64 games for the League Two outfit. 2018 – Pepijn Lijnders was sacked as Manager of N.E.C. after they failed to gain promotion, soon returning to a coaching role with the reds. 2022 - Martin Škrtel announced his retirement from playing, having most recently appeared for Hajskala Ráztočno in his native Slovakia. To Cardiff once more 2006 - We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford in the FA Cup Semi-final. John Arne Riise’s free-kick opened the scoring before Luis García extended our lead early in the second half with a sublime volley. Didier Drogba’s header, one of his eleven goals past us, ensured a nervous last twenty minutes, but future red Joe Cole blazed over with the Blues’ only real chance of note as we hung on to reach our thirteenth FA Cup Final. En route to gay Paree 1981 - Howard Gayle came on as a substitute for the injured Kenny Dalglish after just nine minutes and ran the Bayern München defence ragged, before later himself being substituted by Jimmy Case. We held the German champions to a 1-1 draw in the Olympic Stadium, with Ray Kennedy putting us in front with just seven minutes left before Karl-Heinz Rummenigge equalised, to make it through to our third European Cup Final in five years, on away goals after a goalless first meeting. We suffered a sucker punch in the final seconds of time added on when John Arne Riise headed into his own net. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition in four consecutive seasons. 2010 – We also suffered European disappointment, losing 1-0 in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Semi-final at Club Atlético de Madrid, with the reds having to make the long journey to Spain by train following volcanic eruptions over Iceland causing all flights to be grounded. Baggies bouncing 1967 – West Bromwich Albion won 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to one of Jeff Astle’s seven goals past the reds as winger Peter Thompson appeared for the 200th time. 2012 – Peter Odemwingie struck the only goal of the game as the Baggies won at Anfield for the first time in exactly 45 years, under the management of ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson. Jordan Henderson and Dirk Kuyt both struck the woodwork before we fell behind. Double red 1969 – We were held to a goalless draw at Coventry City with Alun Evans and City’s Maurice Setters both sent off for fighting. Under twelve thousand 1959 - We hosted our lowest post-war League crowd of only 11,976 as we beat Sc***horpe United 3-0 in the Second Division. Alan Arnell netted his 35th and final reds goal, with Billy Liddell and Fred Morris also on the scoresheet. Happy birthday to the reserves 1956 - Left-back Brian Kettle was born in Prescot. He signed for the reds in May 1973 but only made four senior appearances as his route to the first-team was blocked first by Alec Lindsay, then Joey Jones and Alan Kennedy, and he moved to Wigan Athletic in August 1980. 1983 – Former Finnish reserves striker Daniel Sjölund was born in Marieham. He never made the first team after arriving Anfield from West Ham United in November 2000 as part of the deal that took Rigobert Song in the opposite direction, moving on to Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in January 2004. 1993 - Midfielder Craig Roddan was born in Fazakerley. He joined the Academy from Wigan Athletic in 2007 but was released in the summer of 2014. 2001 – Centre-back Morgan Boyes was born in Chester. He put through his own net while making his senior debut in the 5-0 EFL Cup loss at Aston Villa in December 2019, also featuring in the FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield two months later. He moved on to Livingston on a free transfer in January 2022. An eventful friendly for Don 1925 - Scottish left-back Donald McKinlay scored and then replaced Elisha Scott in goal after he was injured at Anfield against Aberdeen. The game ended 1-1. Welsh Englishman 2001 - John Welsh scored for England Under-16’s as they lost 3-1 to Italy in the European Championships at Bramall Lane, with future red Alberto Aquilani on the winning side. Future reds Rigobert Song and Kolo Touré both played in World Cup qualifying wins on the same day. 2002 - Welsh starred for England Under-19’s as they qualified for the European Championship Finals by beating Lithuania 2-1 at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, with future red Jermaine Pennant on target and future reds Glen Johnson and Gary O’Neil also in action. Aquilani featured for his country again, playing for the Under-18’s as they beat Poland 2-0. Stan the Irish Villain 1998 - Steve Staunton won his 74th cap, and final one in his first spell as an Aston Villa player, as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to Argentina in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. Phil Babb and future red Robbie Keane also played. A record for Jameo 2007 - Ex-red David James broke the all-time Premiership clean sheets record with his 143rd shut-out as Portsmouth held Aston Villa to a goalless draw in the Midlands. Other reds games 2001 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield with Emile Heskey opening the scoring. Willem Korsten equalised before the break with Patrik Berger putting us ahead from the spot with Robbie Fowler also on the scoresheet. 1992 – Ian Rush netted our equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest after Teddy Sheringham had scored the first of his seven goals past us. 1978 – We bet Norwich City 3-0 in L4. Clinching the title 1964 - Our biggest win on this day came when we beat Arsenal 5-0, with goals from Ian St. John, Alf Arrowsmith, Roger Hunt and a brace from Peter Thompson. This was enough to hand us our sixth League title, and first under Shanks. BBC’s Panorama programme filmed the Kop at the game, to report on this “extraordinary cultural phenomenon”. The game was an entertaining affair, with Tommy Lawrence saving a George Eastham penalty after a handball by Ron Yeats with the score at 1-0, and Ian Callaghan having a spot-kick saved by ex-reds keeper, and Gunners captain for the day, Jim Furnell late on with keeper Tommy Lawrence initially stepping forward to take it before Bill Shankly waved him back. The team celebrated with the home-made ‘Curlett Cup’ as the actual trophy was still at Goodison from the season before. We have twice also made the trip to Highbury on this day in history. 1931 - We lost 3-1, with our strike being a Herbert Roberts own goal. He signed on as a professional in April 1957 and struck six times in 37 outings before crossing the park to Everton for £10,000 in September 1962, for whom he scored fifty times in 314 appearances, helping them to two League titles. 1995 – Belgian forward Divock Origi was born in Ostend. He was signed from Lille OSC Métropole for £9.8m in July 2014 but was immediately loaned back to spend another season in France. He netted 41 times in 175 reds games before moving on in the summer of 2022, including a crucial goal as we won the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019 and six derby strikes, as well as helping us to claim the Premier League title, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup. 1981 – Forward Milan Jovanović was born in Bajina Bašta in Yugoslavia. He signed on a free transfer from Standard de Liège in July 2010, finding the net just twice in eighteen appearances before moving to RSC Anderlecht for free in August 2011. 1987 – Ex-reds midfielder Danny Guthrie was born in Telford. The former Manchester United trainee made just seven senior reds appearances before moving to Newcastle United for £2.5m in July 2008, after a season-long loan spell at Bolton Wanderers. 1967 - Veteran keeper Paul Jones was born in Chirk, near Wrexham. He made two appearances while on loan from Southampton at Anfield in January 2004.
