Crystal smashed 1989 - Eight outfield players scored, a League record, in our 9-0 humiliation of Crystal Palace at Anfield, still our joint best top-flight victory. John Aldridge came off the bench to score a penalty with his first kick, in his final reds game. Glenn Hysén struck the first of his seven reds goals in this game. For the record, our other scorers that day were John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Steve McMahon and Ian Rush, with Steve Nicol nabbing a brace. David Burrows, Alan Hansen, Ronnie Whelan and substitute Jan Mølby were the only outfield reds not on target. Geoff Thomas blew a golden chance to net for the visitors, missing a penalty. This was actually Kenny Dalglish’s hundredth League win as reds boss, in his 167th game. Alec off 1977 – Left-back Alec Lindsay left the club to sign for Stoke City, after a successful loan spell. He had signed from his hometown club Bury for £67,000 in March 1969 and netted eighteen times in 248 reds games, helping us to the League and UEFA Cup in 1973, and FA Cup and FA Charity Shield the following year. 1974 – Defender Dave Rylands moved on to Hereford United. He joined the reds in 1968, turning pro in March 1970, only making one senior reds appearance. Red trebles 2020 – Mohamed Salah struck a treble, including two penalties, as we opened our League campaign with a 4-3 victory over Leeds United behind closed doors at Anfield. Virgil van Dijk headed in the other goal as we led on four separate occasions. 2009 – Yossi Benayoun struck his third reds hat-trick, all in different competitions, as we thumped Burnley 4-0 at Anfield, with Dirk Kuyt also on target. The Israeli midfielder also had another strike wrongly chalked off for offside before nabbing his third. Happy birthdays 1957 - Steve Ogrizovic was born in Mansfield. He signed from Chesterfield for £70,000 in November 1977 but only made five senior appearances for the reds before joining Coventry City in August 1982, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1987, playing over 600 games. 1977 - David Thompson was born in Birkenhead. He turned professional in November 1994 and scored five times in 56 reds games before Gérard Houllier sold him for £3m to Coventry City in August 2000. 1980 - Former reserves winger Richie Partridge was born in Dublin. He only managed three first-team appearances for the reds, and is now a practising physiotherapist, recently working with the Academy’s Under-21’s and then the first team. 2004 – Centre-half Terence Miles was born in Liverpool. He turned pro in September 2021, having arrived at the Academy at Under-7’s level. He is the nephew of former reserves forward John Miles. Albert’s the one for me 1946 - Albert Stubbins signed from Newcastle United for a British record £13,000 fee after six strikes in thirty games. He was also tempted by being offered a well-paid part-time position as ‘Inspector of Canteens’ that involved testing the quality of tea served and chatting to dockers and other workers! He struck 83 times in 178 reds games, and won one League title, before becoming a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade. Digger off the mark 1987 - John Barnes scored his first senior reds goal as we beat Oxford United 2-0, with John Aldridge also on target against his old club, so netting in his fifth consecutive game. This was our first home game of the season, with future red Ray Houghton impressing for the visitors. Kenny back at Anfield 1993 - Kenny Dalglish won at Anfield as visiting Manager for the only time, thanks to a goal from scouse ex-reds reserve Mike Newell for Blackburn Rovers, the last of his eight strikes against the reds. Steve McManaman reached a century of reds appearances while Jan Mølby played his 200th League game for the club. 1908 - We also faced Rovers, losing 1-0 at Ewood Park, with keeper Sam Hardy reaching a century of League games for the reds. A European first 1972 - We played our first game in the new UEFA Cup, beating West Germans Eintracht Frankfurt, who were playing their first competitive fixture of the season. We won 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan and Emlyn Hughes. This was Bill Shankly’s fiftieth European game in charge of the reds. Two of our three other European games on this day also ended in victory. 1995 - We beat Russian outfit Spartak-Alania Vladikavkaz 2-1 in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign, Mirdzhalol Kasimov opened the scoring with Steve McManaman equalising before Jamie Redknapp struck a thirty-yard winner, with just 39 travelling reds present, all seated in the presidential box for their own safety! 1996 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye bagged the only goal of our European Cup Winners’ Cup opener at Finnish side Myllykosken Pallo-47. 2006 - We held PSV Eindhoven to a goalless draw in our opening UEFA Champions League group fixture in the Philips Stadion with Jamie Carragher appearing for the fiftieth time in the competition. Most recently 2021 – Mohamed Salah bagged his hundredth goal in Premier League football, including his time with Chelsea, to open the scoring at Leeds United. Fabinho netted after the break, before Pascal Struijk was dismissed for the home side following a challenge that left Harvey Elliott with a dislocated ankle. Sadio Mané struck in stoppage time to secure a 3-0 victory. 2015 – We lost 3-1 at Manchester United, with Divock Origi making his reds bow from the bench. Christian Benteke struck late on as we limped to defeat. Reporting in 2012 – The Hillsborough Independent Panel reported, shocking many people by revealing the extent of the establishment cover-up at the time of the disaster, its aftermath and ever since. It led to an unprecedented apology from Prime Minister David Cameron. Double debutants 2010 – Left-back Paul Konchesky and midfielder Raul Meireles both made their reds bows in our lifeless goalless draw at Birmingham City. Derby joy We have twice beaten Everton in Wartime league matches at Anfield on this day in history. 1942 - George Mills netted the only goal of the game. 1945 - Billy Liddell and Les Shannon were on the scoresheet as we won 2-1. A thumping win 1936 - We trounced Grimsby Town 7-1 in a First Division game at Anfield. Fred Howe and Vic Wright struck twice apiece, with Berry Nieuwenhuys, Jack Balmer and Matt Busby all also on target. Reds farewells 1931 - Harry Barkas played his fifth and final reds game as we lost 2-1 at Leicester City, with Gordon Gunson bagging our consolation. Ernie Hine struck one of his ten goals against the reds, with Sep Smith also on target. 1903 - Right-back Jack Chadburn played his second and last reds game as we lost 3-1 at home to The Wednesday, with forward Sydney Smith appearing for the second and final time. Jack Cox scored as Andrew Wilson struck two of his eight goals past us, with Harry Davis also on target. 1980 – Tommy Smith quit as youth team boss in order to concentrate on his business interests. Gunning for a draw We have twice drawn with Arsenal in First Division matches on this day in history. 1925 - Jimmy Walsh netted our goal at Highbury, with Charlie Buchan on target for the home side, to add to the eighteen strikes he had registered against the reds while with Sunderland. 1951 - The game at Anfield ended goalless. Mixed fortunes against the Hammers 1962 - We beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield thanks to an Ian St. John brace, with his second strike being the club’s 3,000th in top-flight football. Gerry Byrne played his hundredth reds game with Johnny Byrne on target for the visitors. 1998 - We lost 2-1 at Upton Park in a Premiership fixture, with Karl-Heinz Riedle nabbing our consolation after John Hartson and Eyal Berkovic had put the Irons ahead. Stevie out on loan 2002 - Young reserve Stephen Warnock joined Bradford City on loan. He played twelve times for the Bantams, scoring in a League defeat at Sheffield Wednesday. International debuts 1984 - Steve Nicol made his Scotland debut in their 6-1 defeat of Yugoslavia at Hampden Park, as John Wark won his 29th and final cap. Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Graeme Souness were both on the scoresheet. On the same day, Jan Mølby won his first cap as a reds player, and ninth in total, as Denmark beat Austria 3-1 in a friendly in Copenhagen. Mark Lawrenson, Michael Robinson, Ronnie Whelan, ex-red Joey Jones and future reds John Barnes, Glenn Hysén and Mark Wright all also featured in internationals that day. 1990 - Future red Gary McAllister won his first cap as a Leeds United player as Scotland beat Romania 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Hampden Park. John Barnes, Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton, Ronnie Whelan and future reds István Kozma, Jari Litmanen and Mark Wright all also played for their countries that day. 1932 – Future reds forward Sam English won the first of his two caps for Northern Ireland as they lost 4-0 to Scotland in Belfast in the British International Championships, with reds keeper Elisha Scott also in the side. On target for their countries 2007 - Fernando Torres bagged his first goal as a red as Spain beat Latvia 2-0 in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Oviedo. Future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos netted a brace, his last goals while with Eintracht Frankfurt, with John Arne Riise also on target as Norway were held to a 2-2 draw by Greece in Oslo, with ex-red Frode Kippe also in the home side. Ex-red Michael Owen struck twice as England beat Russia 3-0 in another qualifier, with Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Stewart Downing and ex-red Emile Heskey also featuring. Craig Bellamy bagged a brace while winning his first cap for Wales as a West Ham United player, as they won a Euro 2008 qualifier 5-2 in Slovakia, with John Toshack in charge. Andriy Voronin faced future red Alberto Aquilani, while Roy Hodgson managed a Finland side that included Sami Hyypiä and ex-red Daniel Sjölund as they were held to a goalless draw by Poland in Helsinki. Luis Suárez won his first cap as an Ajax player as Uruguay drew a friendly 0-0 in South Africa. Sadio Mané won his first cap as an Al Nassr player in Senegal’s 1-0 friendly defeat by Algeria in Dakar, with ex-red Ki-Jana Hoever playing for the Dutch Under-21’s for the sixth and last time as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in North Macedonia. Luis Díaz, Ben Doak, Wataru Endō, Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Núñez, Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, future red Giorgi Mamardashvili and ex-red Emre Can were all also in international action as Steve Clarke, Bernard Diomède and Rigobert Song all took charge of their countries. Also on the move 1998 - Ex-red Steve Nicol signed for Doncaster Rovers. He played 25 League games for them. 2008 - Robbie Fowler signed for Blackburn Rovers. He failed to score in six games as they struggled for form. On the same day, Steve Clarke resigned from Chelsea’s coaching staff, prior to joining West Ham United as First Team Coach three days later. 2009 – Reserves forward Michael Ngoo joined the reds from Southend United for a fee of up to £250,000. He was released in May 2014 without having reached the first team. 2012 – Head of Scouting Dave Fallows and Chief Scout Barry Hunter both started work. Meanwhile, left-back Grégory Vignal signed for Dundee United, but left two months later without having made a first-team appearance. 2017 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of his boyhood club Crystal Palace for the first time, leading them to 54 victories in 162 games in charge before leaving in May 2021. 2019 – Right-back Connor Randall signed for Bulgarian top-flight side Arda 1924 Kardzhali after eight senior appearances for the reds. 2022 – Keeper Loris Karius signed for Newcastle United, with his only appearance in his first campaign coming in the League Cup Final at Wembley. He joined the reds for £4.7m from 1. FSV Mainz 05 in July 2016, taking over the number one shirt. He made 49 first-team appearances, keeping 22 clean sheets but making several high-profile errors. Mixed fortunes against the Rams 1973 – Derby County beat us 3-1 at the Baseball Ground. Roger Davies bagged one of his five goals against the reds with Kevin Hector netting one of his four. Phil Boersma scored our goal, with Roy McFarland also on target for the home side. 1896 – Jimmy Methven put through his own net with Harry Bradshaw also netting as we beat Derby County 2-0 at Anfield, after Jack Robinson had saved a penalty from George Allan. Other reds games 1984 – Paul Walsh netted as we drew 1-1 at Manchester United. 1981 – We won 2-1 at Coventry City with Alan Kennedy bagging a rapid equaliser after we had fallen behind to a Gerry Daly goal in the first minute. Terry McDermott scored the winner from the spot as Bob Paisley reached 300 League games as reds boss. 1979 – Norwich City held us to a goalless draw at Anfield in Bob Paisley’s 300th game in charge in all competitions. 1973 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in L4. Martin Peters opened the scoring with one of his fourteen goals against the reds, before Chris Lawler equalised. Martin Chivers nabbed one of his seven goals past us. Pat Jennings saved a penalty from Emlyn Hughes but was judged to have left his line too early. Alec Lindsay converted the subsequent retake, with Chris Lawler netting the last-minute winner. 1956 – Dicky Robinson scored an own goal as we drew a Second Division encounter 1-1 at Middlesbrough, with Brian Clough bagging the first of his ten goals past us. 1923 – We lost 2-0 at Burnley. For the Dons 2004 - A match was staged between Wimbledon Old Boys and Liverpool Old Boys in aid of the AFC Wimbledon stadium fund. The game ended all square with the reds goal coming poetically from a John Aldridge penalty.

Happy birthday Thommo 1954 - Phil Thompson was born in Kensington, Liverpool. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. Martin’s bow 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel made his reds debut as a substitute for the injured Álvaro Arbeloa in our 2-2 home draw with Aston Villa, our fourth successive tie in the League. Yossi Benayoun gave us the lead before Villa hit back through Marlon Harewood and a Fábio Aurélio own goal in the space of three minutes. Peter Crouch came off the bench to bag a late leveller. 1905 – Forward James Garside played the first of his five senior reds games as we were held to a 1-1 draw in the Second Division at Anfield by Lincoln City, with our goal coming from right-half Robbie Robinson. In comes Scott 2005 - Young keeper Scott Carson signed from Leeds United for £750,000, with Paul Harrison going on loan in the opposite direction. Carson made just nine first-team appearances, only managing to keep two clean sheets. He moved on to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m in July 2008 after loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa and Charlton Athletic. Meanwhile, young midfielder John Welsh signed a new contract on the same day that tied him to Anfield until summer 2007. However, he moved to Hull City a year later, in exchange for winger Paul Anderson. Meanwhile, future red Daniel Agger played for Denmark Under-21’s as they lost 1-0 to Panama A in an unofficial international in Panama City. Jürgen’s ten tons 2023 - Jürgen Klopp took charge of his thousandth game as a Manager as Chelsea held us to a dour goalless draw at Anfield. 2024 – We thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 at their Vitality Stadium, despite the scores being goalless at half time. Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota both bagged braces as Conor Bradley became the first Northern Irish player to represent the reds in the League since inside-right Sammy Smyth at Blackpool in April 1954. Recent disappointments 2021 – Gini Wijnaldum skippered the reds for the first time as Burnley won 1-0 at Anfield behind closed doors. Ashley Barnes’ late spot-kick brough to an end our 68-game unbeaten home League run. On the same day, young midfielder Tyler Morton signed a new contract. 2017 – Swansea City won 3-2 at Anfield, with Fernando Llorente netting twice shortly after the break. A Roberto Firmino brace brought us level but future Blue Gylfi Sigurðsson grabbed one of his five goals past us to date to secure the victory. 2012 – Craig Bellamy bagged our consolation as we tamely lost 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers with ex-red David N’Gog on the winning side. Beglin’s bad break 1987 - Jim Beglin had his leg broken by Gary Stevens in his 98th and final reds game, with Ian Rush nabbing the only goal of our League Cup Fifth Round tie late on at Goodison. We reached the Final that season for the sixth time. Africa’s finest 2003 - El-Hadji Diouf was named as the Glo-CAF African Footballer of the Year for the second successive season, a feat since surpassed by Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o who won the award three times in succession. That evening, he scored the opener in our 2-0 Worthington Cup Semi-final second leg win over Sheffield United at Anfield, with Michael Owen grabbing the decisive second in extra time, to take us through to Cardiff 3-2 on aggregate. This was our 400th goal in all competitions under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. Red centurions 2004 - Jamie Carragher made his comeback from a broken leg, playing his 200th League game as a late Kenny Miller strike denied us all three points at Wolverhampton Wanderers, after Bruno Cheyrou had put us ahead. This was our 200th League match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge, which had been rearranged after a flooded pitch before Christmas. 1950 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes reached a century of League appearances for the reds in our 2-0 defeat of Birmingham City at Anfield. Jimmy Payne and Albert Stubbins scored the goals. A first double 1899 - We beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield to complete the first ever League double in this fixture. Johnny Walker and Tom Robertson netted our goals. Beginnings and end 1939 – Right-half Harry Eastham nabbed his fourth and final reds goal as we thumped Stockport County 5-1 in the FA Cup Fourth Round at Anfield. Willie Fagan had a penalty saved, but Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer struck twice apiece, with Duggie Reid bagging the first of his six goals against the reds. 1933 - Outside-left Alf Hanson made his reds bow as we lost 5-2 at Aston Villa. Tom Waring nabbed two of his six goals against the reds, with Eric Houghton also scoring one of his six past us, Joe Beresford netting one of his four and James Gibson also on target. 1911 - Forward Joseph Brough played his eleventh and final reds game as we lost 2-0 at Nottingham Forest. Grenville Morris struck the last of his six goals past us, with Jack Armstrong also netting. A rare defeat 1978 - Birmingham City left Anfield with a 3-2 win to inflict on us one of just eleven home League defeats during the whole of the 1970’s. Birthday boy Phil Thompson and Ray Kennedy netted our goals. 500 away 1925 - We won 4-1 at Aston Villa in our 500th away League game, in a match postponed from three weeks earlier. Jimmy Walsh bagged a brace with Harry Chambers and Danny Shone also on the scoresheet as Len Capewell nabbed one of his six goals past us. Other birthdays 1961 - Former reserves forward Colin Russell was born in Liverpool. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. He left for Huddersfield Town in 1982. 1904 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was born in Coylton, Ayrshire. He signed from St. Mirren in February 1928 for £4,000 and struck four times in 254 reds games. He failed to win any honours during his spell at Anfield but had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren before joining the reds. He was a member of the Sunderland team that won the League title in 1936, having moved to Wearside in November 1935. Brucie’s back 1989 - Bruce Grobbelaar returned to the side after recovering from meningitis, with lookey-likey strike pairing John Aldridge and Ian Rush netting in a 2-0 defeat of Southampton at Anfield. 1967 - We also beat the Saints at home, with Chris Lawler and Alf Arrowsmith on target in a 2-1 victory in what was Bill Shankly’s 300th League game in charge. Twice against the Tractor Boys We have twice entertained Ipswich Town on this day in history. 1961 - We were held to a 1-1 draw in a Second Division meeting, when winger Kevin Lewis netted and Ted Phillips scored one of his five goals against the reds. Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower played his 105th and last reds game. 1986 - Paul Walsh, Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush struck as we won 3-0 in our Fifth Round League Cup tie. We were then knocked out by Queens Park Rangers in the Semi-final. Off on loan 2011 – Reserves defender Stephen Darby rejoined Notts County on loan, for whom he played a further eighteen times. 2009 – Jermaine Pennant moved to Portsmouth on loan. He had hit the target just three times in 81 reds games after signing from Birmingham City for £6.7m in July 2006. He appeared fourteen times for Pompey without scoring. 2000 - Phil Babb temporarily joined First Division Tranmere Rovers. He played seven times for the Lilywhites, before returning to the stiffs at Anfield. Ton up for Rigo 2006 - Ex-red Rigobert Song won his hundredth full international cap for Cameroon in their 3-1 defeat of Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Cairo. On the same day, Jari Litmanen was making his 99th appearance for Finland as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in a tournament in Riyadh, in what was Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge of the Finns. 2010 – Song also represented his country, as they drew 2-2 with Tunisia in a MTN Africa Cup of Nations group game in Angola. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah played for Egypt as they beat Uganda 1-0 in a group game in Gabon. Kolo Touré has played three times for the Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals on this day. 2002 – He was booked as they were held to a goalless draw by Togo in Mali. 2006 – He was on the winning side as Morocco lost 1-0 in Egypt, with the Ivory Coast making it all the way to the Final that year. 2008 – Nigeria lost 1-0 in Ghana. 2007 – Lucas captained Brazil as they drew 2-2 with Chile in a Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" game in Paraguay, with five players in total dismissed. 2016 - Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of the Czech Republic. Young English reds 1975 - Future red David Johnson netted as England Under-23’s beat their Welsh counterparts 2-0 in Wrexham. Phil Thompson made his debut at this level, on his 21st birthday, while future red Joey Jones also played. On the move 2004 - John Toshack took charge of Real Murcia, having been appointed two days earlier. This was the fourth Spanish club he had managed. They were bottom of the table in the Spanish League and he could not prevent them returning to the Second Division after just one season in the top flight. 2014 - Paul Ince was sacked as Manager of Blackpool after just eleven months in charge, leading them to just twelve victories in 42 games. 2019 – Ex-reds right-back Glen Johnson announced his retirement from playing, having been released by Stoke City at the end of the previous season. On the same day, future reds Wataru Endō and Takumi Minamino played as Japan beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 in an AFC Asian Cup Round of 16 tie in the United Arab Emirates. 2020 – Keeper Dan Atherton joined Marine on loan. On the same day, left-back Jack Robinson signed for Sheffield United from Nottingham Forest, so far playing eighteen times for the Blades. 2024 – Ex-reds loanee right-back Javier Manquillo was sold to Real Club Celta de Vigo by Newcastle United, having struck once in 110 outings for the Magpies since signing from Club Atlético de Madrid in July 2017.

In comes Cody 2023 – Dutch forward Cody Gakpo signed from PSV Eindhoven for a reported initial £40m. He settled in quickly, bagging 34 goals in 106 outings in his first two years with the reds, already helping us to claim the League Cup. Yet another win 1981 - We registered our 85th consecutive home match without defeat as we beat Alliance Premier League side Altrincham 4-1 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, thanks to goals from Terry McDermott, Ray Kennedy and a Kenny Dalglish brace, with shipping clerk Graham Heathcote converting a penalty for the visitors in front of the Kop. Future Academy Manager John Owens and Zak Whitbread’s dad Barry were both on the losing side while reds legend Bill Shankly bizarrely travelled to the game on the Altrincham team coach and went into the visitors’ dressing room before the game, as part of a promotional campaign for Robinson’s Barley Water that he was involved with. We lost our next home match 2-1 to Leicester City, at the end of the month, to bring the run to an end. This was the most recent day on which both the reds and Everton have played at home at the same time, with the Blues hosting Arsenal in another cup tie. Cup glory 1976 - We knocked out the FA Cup holders in a Third Round tie at Upton Park, as goals from John Toshack and Kevin Keegan handed us a 2-0 win over West Ham United. 1987 - We also beat the Hammers when Steve McMahon netted the only goal of our League match at Anfield late on. 2009 – We won 2-0 at Preston North End, with Albert Riera opening the scoring past future reds keeper Andy Lonergan before Steve Gerrard set up Fernando Torres for a last-minute tap-in to settle any nerves. This was our 400th FA Cup game to date. On the same day, Jonjo Shelvey became the youngest ever FA Cup goalscorer, aged sixteen years and 311 days, as Charlton Athletic were held to a 1-1 draw at The Valley by Norwich City. 1999 - We won 3-0 at struggling First Division side Port Vale with Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Paul Ince on the scoresheet. Cup despair 1998 - We were humbled 3-1 by Coventry City in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield. Jamie Redknapp grabbed our consolation, our 600th in the competition. Dion Dublin bagged one of his seven goals against the reds, with Darren Huckerby and Paul Telfer also netting. 1993 - We were held 2-2 at Second Division Bolton Wanderers, with our goals coming from Ian Rush and a Mark Winstanley own goal, with John McGinlay and ex-red Mark Seagraves netting for the home side. We went on to lose the Anfield replay 2-0. Starting the new millennium badly 2000 - Chris Armstrong scored the first goal against the reds in the new millennium as we lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur. Start and end 1953 - Inside-right Sammy Smyth made his reds bow as we lost 3-1 in a top-flight game at Stoke City. Kevin Baron scored our consolation, while centre-forward Albert Stubbins appeared for the 178th and final time. Outside-left Ken Brierley also played his 61st and last reds game. Harry Oscroft struck the first two of his six goals past us, with Don Whiston also netting. 1948 - We entertained the Potters, being held to a goalless draw, when forward Jack Balmer played his 200th reds game and Scottish left-winger Doug McAvoy was making the first of just two senior reds appearances. The players were presented with their medals from the previous season’s League title-winning campaign before the match by the President of the Football League, William Cuff. 1931 - Harry Barkas made his reds debut in our 3-1 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield in the top flight. Gordon Hodgson struck a brace, with Robert Done also on target. East Anglian joy 2005 - Steve Finnan played his 400th club career game as goals from Luis García and John Arne Riise secured a 2-1 win at Norwich City, who were relegated at the end of the season. Salif Diao made his 61st and final reds outing in this match. Happy birthdays 1987 – Spanish keeper Adrián was born in Seville. He signed for free in August 2019, keeping just seven clean sheets in 26 senior games as he helped us to claim the Premier League title and UEFA Super Cup. He returned to former club Real Betis Balompié in July 2024 after his contract had expired. 1888 - Forward Arthur Berry was born in Liverpool, the son of Edwin Berry who was reds Chairman in the 1900’s. Arthur only played four first-team games in his two spells at Anfield before the First World War, as well as twice claiming Olympic Gold medals for football. 1855 - John McKenna was born in Drumcaw, County Monaghan, Ireland. He served as a Director from the formation of the club until July 1921, having two lengthy spells as the club’s Chairman. He acted as our boss for the 1895/96 season, guiding us to the Second Division title, before being replaced by Tom Watson. He was later Chairman of the Football League for two decades. Title decider? 2019 – We lost 2-1 at Manchester City, narrowing our lead at the top of the table to four points. Sergio Agüero put the home side ahead with the last of his seven goals past us after a Sadio Mané shot was within 1.1cm of crossing the line after an attempted clearance rebounded. Roberto Firmino equalised after the break. However, Leroy Sané bagged a late winner as City went on to retain the title, the latest of his four goals against us. Earlier that day, Roberto Firmino was named as winner of the Samba d’Or for 2018, an award given to the best Brazilian playing in Europe, voted for by journalists, players and fans. 2012 - We also lost 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium, with Sergio Agüero profiting from a Pepe Reina error to net his first past us. Yaya Touré headed in before Gareth Barry was dismissed and future red James Milner converted a late penalty. Incoming 1958 - Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower signed from Hibernian for £11,000. He bagged 22 goals in 105 reds games, moving on to Newcastle United in March 1961. 2018 - Peter Crouch became a father for the third time, to Johnny. Beating the Gunners We have twice defeated Arsenal at Anfield on this day in history. 1925 - Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw struck as we won 2-1. 1983 - Ian Rush, Graeme Souness and Kenny Dalglish were on the scoresheet in a 3-1 victory to put us ten points clear at the top of the table. Brian Talbot bagged one of his six goals against the reds. Double farewells 1903 – Inside-forward Tommy Green bagged his only reds goal in his seventh and final appearance for the club, as we lost a top-flight match 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with right-back Don McCallum playing his second and last reds game. Walter Whittaker netted one of his six goals past us from the spot, with William Bow and Albert Monks also scoring. Wearside joy 1914 - We won 2-1 at Roker Park in a top-flight encounter, with Jackie Sheldon on target as Jack Parkinson scored his 128th and final reds goal. James Richardson struck the last of his five goals past us. 1959 - Johnny Wheeler, Louis Bimpson and Fred Morris netted as we beat Sunderland 3-1 at Anfield in a Second Division match, with left-winger Alan A’Court playing his 200th League game for the reds aged 24 years and 95 days, the youngest ever reds player to achieve this milestone. Roy in charge 1982 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Bristol City, moving up from Assistant. He won just three of his twenty games in charge before moving to Sweden to take over at Örebro SK. 2004 – Hodgson took charge of United Arab Emirates as they were held to a goalless draw by Qatar in the Gulf Cup of Nations in Kuwait. Crazy Horse for the three 1973 - Emlyn Hughes appeared in an unofficial international as The Three beat The Six 2-0 at Wembley Stadium. This was a ‘Common Market’ match with The Three representing Denmark, the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, while The Six featured players from Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany. 1977 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s as they beat Switzerland 3-2 in a friendly in Israel. Other reds games 1989 – Ronnie Whelan headed in the only goal of Aston Villa’s visit to Anfield. 1920 – We lost 3-2 at Sheffield United, with Stan Fazackerley bagging a brace for the Blades and Harry Johnson scoring the first of his seven goals against the reds. Tom Miller scored twice for us, with his second coming from the rebound after Harold Gough had saved his spot-kick. Moving on 2007 - Former reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan joined Rochdale on loan from Chester City, although he did not make an appearance before returning to the Deva Stadium. 2013 – Keeper Jamie Stephens moved to Welsh Premier League side Airbus UK Broughton on a temporary basis, before being released by the reds in the summer. He is now with Newport County. On the same day, Stuart Webber was appointed Head of Recruitment for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He had joined the reds as Senior National Scout in 2009, moving up to become Director of Recruitment in May 2011, before leaving in the summer of 2012. 2014 – Ex-reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević joined Charlton Athletic on loan from Standard de Liège, netting twice in 22 outings for the Addicks. 2017 – Ex-reds centre-back Stephen Sama signed for German side Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth, although he only made one League appearance, moving on to Heracles Almelo in the Netherlands in July 2018. 2018 – Midfielder Adam Phillips joined Cambridge United on loan from Norwich City, for whom he played four times. 2019 – Winger Adam Hammill joined Sc***horpe United from St. Mirren, scoring once in nineteen outings before the end of the campaign. 2020 – Midfielder Herbie Kane joined Hull City on loan, nabbing two goals in nine games for the Tigers.

Off goes Rowdy 1971 - Ron Yeats signed for Tranmere Rovers. The giant Scottish centre-half had netted sixteen goals in 454 outings for the reds, captaining us to two League titles, our first FA Cup, Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. He was one of Bill Shankly’s first and most inspired signings, arriving for just £22,000 from Dundee United in July 1961. A new home record 1972 - We registered our 21st consecutive home League win as a Peter Cormack goal handed us a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace. This was a club record, and a record in the top-flight until we reached 24 in July 2020. However, we were held to a 1-1 draw by Derby County in our next League match at Anfield. 1990 - We travelled to Selhurst Park, losing 1-0 with Mark Bright netting. Michael and Sami – best in the world 2001 - Michael Owen and Sami Hyypiä were named in L’Équipe’s World Team of the Year, after a highly successful year that resulted in the reds claiming five trophies. A record gate 2007 - We were held to a goalless draw at Manchester City, with the reds spurning several good chances. The game took place in front of the then record attendance at the City of Manchester Stadium of 47,321. Phil’s farewell 2017 - Philippe Coutinho played his final reds game as we beat Leicester City 2-1 at Anfield. Jamie Vardy opened the scoring early on with the most recent of his seven strikes past us, becoming the first Foxes player to net in five consecutive games against the reds. Mohamed Salah bagged a brace after the break to secure the victory. Births and deaths 2018 – Winger Peter Thompson died. He had netted 54 times in 416 reds games, helping us to win two League titles, our first FA Cup and the FA Charity Shield, having signed in August 1963 for £37,000 from Preston North End. He moved on to Bolton Wanderers for £18,000 in January 1974. 1873 - Centre-half Jim McBride was born in Renton, Dumbartonshire. He struck seven times in 56 games, helping us to the Second Division title in 1894 after signing from Renton in June 1892. He moved on to Ardwick in December 1894, sadly dying at the age of just 25. 1929 - Full-back Tom McNulty was born in Salford. He signed from Manchester United for £7,000 in February 1954 and played 36 times for the reds without scoring. He moved on to Hyde United in 1958. 1990 – Forward Nathan Eccleston was born in Manchester. He made his reds bow in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009, making nine senior appearances without finding the back of the net before being sold to Blackpool in August 2012. 1973 – Forward Jack Sambrook died. He played just twice after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1922, moving on to Stockport County in May 1923. Most recently 2022 – We beat Leicester City 2-1 at Anfield. We fell behind to an early Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall strike, but Wout Faes put through his own net twice before the break. On the same day, left-back Andy Robertson was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List. Winning in the northeast 2011 - We went behind to Newcastle United at Anfield to a Daniel Agger own goal before Steven Gerrard came off the bench to inspire a comeback. Ex-Toon star Craig Bellamy bagged a brace, with Gerrard himself also on target. Andy Carroll headed against the bar, the seventeenth time we had hit the woodwork so far that season as we won 3-1. 2015 – Christian Benteke bagged the only goal of our trip to Sunderland immediately after the break. 2020 – We were held to a goalless draw by Newcastle United behind closed doors at St. James’ Park to end the year three points clear at the top of the table. Luis at last 2006 - Luis García grabbed the only goal of the game at Tottenham Hotspur, his thirtieth and final reds strike. This completed our twelfth League double over the North London outfit. On the same day, it was announced that Steven Gerrard was to be awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. Beating the Gunners We twice beat Woolwich Arsenal at Anfield in the early years of last century. 1905 - Arthur Goddard, Sam Raybould and Alex Raisbeck netted as we won 3-0. 1911 - Jack Parkinson and John Bovill both struck twice in a 4-1 win. A huge win 1944 - Don Welsh scored six goals, a hat-trick in each half, as we obliterated Southport 12-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League game. Billy Liddell was on target twice, so scoring in his third consecutive game, with Jackie Campbell and Michael Hulligan also adding braces. Rushie fails 1989 - Ian Rush had a penalty saved by ex-red Bob Bolder as a John Barnes goal was enough to hand us victory at home to Charlton Athletic. In comes Harry 1930 - Harry Barkas signed from Gateshead for £1,500, for whom he had struck seven times in nineteen outings. He failed to score in five reds games, returning to Gateshead in 1932. Bush’s bow 1933 - Wing-half Tom Bush debuted as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Alf Hanson grabbing our goal. Stalemate at the Bridge We have twice drawn at Chelsea on this day over the years. 1995 - We held the Blues 2-2 at Stamford Bridge, with Steve McManaman and John Spencer each nabbing a brace. 1922 - The game ended goalless as forward Jack Sambrook made his reds bow. Overall record We have only played twelve first-class games on this day in history, winning seven times. 1967 - Ian Callaghan netted the only goal as we entertained Coventry City. 1893 - Harry Bradshaw and David Henderson struck as we beat Grimsby Town 2-0 in a Second Division encounter, our first ever meeting with the Mariners. Michael on loan 1986 - Future red Michael Thomas joined Second Division Portsmouth on loan from Arsenal. He played three games for Pompey as they edged towards promotion. Stevie charged 2008 - Steven Gerrard was charged with assault and affray following an incident at a Southport bar two days earlier. He was later acquitted of all charges. Back to the coast 1993 - Jimmy Case re-joined Brighton & Hove Albion from Sittingbourne on a free transfer. He made 34 appearances in his second spell at the Goldstone Ground, before retiring from the game five years later. Other reds game 2012 – We beat Queens Park Rangers 3-0 at Loftus Road. Daniel Agger added to a Luis Suárez brace, with all the goals coming in the opening half hour. Roys in action 1963 - Roy Evans played for Lancashire Schools as they lost 3-2 to their Yorkshire counterparts at Bramall Lane. 2007 - Roy Hodgson took over as Manager of Fulham, having been appointed two days earlier with the side in the relegation zone. He led them to just nine points from his first thirteen games in charge. However, twelve points from the last five games kept them in the Premiership. They finished seventh in his first full campaign, their best-ever League finish. Last season he took them to the UEFA Europa League Final, where they lost out to Club Atlético de Madrid, finishing twelfth in the League. He was subsequently named LMA Manager of the Year by a record margin. On the move 1994 - Mike Marsh signed for Coventry City from West Ham United for £450,000. He struck twice in nineteen games before rejoining Graeme Souness at Galatasaray the following summer. 2010 – Chief Scout Eduardo Macía left the reds by mutual consent. He had arrived at Anfield in June 2006 and is now working for Leicester City. 2023 – Centre-half Tiago Ilori signed for Belenenses in the Portuguese second division.
