Crystal smashed 1989 - Eight outfield players scored, a League record, in our 9-0 humiliation of Crystal Palace at Anfield, still our joint best top-flight victory. John Aldridge came off the bench to score a penalty with his first kick, in his final reds game. Glenn Hysén struck the first of his seven reds goals in this game. For the record, our other scorers that day were John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Steve McMahon and Ian Rush, with Steve Nicol nabbing a brace. David Burrows, Alan Hansen, Ronnie Whelan and substitute Jan Mølby were the only outfield reds not on target. Geoff Thomas blew a golden chance to net for the visitors, missing a penalty. This was actually Kenny Dalglish’s hundredth League win as reds boss, in his 167th game. Alec off 1977 – Left-back Alec Lindsay left the club to sign for Stoke City, after a successful loan spell. He had signed from his hometown club Bury for £67,000 in March 1969 and netted eighteen times in 248 reds games, helping us to the League and UEFA Cup in 1973, and FA Cup and FA Charity Shield the following year. 1974 – Defender Dave Rylands moved on to Hereford United. He joined the reds in 1968, turning pro in March 1970, only making one senior reds appearance. Red trebles 2020 – Mohamed Salah struck a treble, including two penalties, as we opened our League campaign with a 4-3 victory over Leeds United behind closed doors at Anfield. Virgil van Dijk headed in the other goal as we led on four separate occasions. 2009 – Yossi Benayoun struck his third reds hat-trick, all in different competitions, as we thumped Burnley 4-0 at Anfield, with Dirk Kuyt also on target. The Israeli midfielder also had another strike wrongly chalked off for offside before nabbing his third. Happy birthdays 1957 - Steve Ogrizovic was born in Mansfield. He signed from Chesterfield for £70,000 in November 1977 but only made five senior appearances for the reds before joining Coventry City in August 1982, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1987, playing over 600 games. 1977 - David Thompson was born in Birkenhead. He turned professional in November 1994 and scored five times in 56 reds games before Gérard Houllier sold him for £3m to Coventry City in August 2000. 1980 - Former reserves winger Richie Partridge was born in Dublin. He only managed three first-team appearances for the reds, and is now a practising physiotherapist, recently working with the Academy’s Under-21’s and then the first team. 2004 – Centre-half Terence Miles was born in Liverpool. He turned pro in September 2021, having arrived at the Academy at Under-7’s level. He is the nephew of former reserves forward John Miles. Albert’s the one for me 1946 - Albert Stubbins signed from Newcastle United for a British record £13,000 fee after six strikes in thirty games. He was also tempted by being offered a well-paid part-time position as ‘Inspector of Canteens’ that involved testing the quality of tea served and chatting to dockers and other workers! He struck 83 times in 178 reds games, and won one League title, before becoming a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade. Digger off the mark 1987 - John Barnes scored his first senior reds goal as we beat Oxford United 2-0, with John Aldridge also on target against his old club, so netting in his fifth consecutive game. This was our first home game of the season, with future red Ray Houghton impressing for the visitors. Kenny back at Anfield 1993 - Kenny Dalglish won at Anfield as visiting Manager for the only time, thanks to a goal from scouse ex-reds reserve Mike Newell for Blackburn Rovers, the last of his eight strikes against the reds. Steve McManaman reached a century of reds appearances while Jan Mølby played his 200th League game for the club. 1908 - We also faced Rovers, losing 1-0 at Ewood Park, with keeper Sam Hardy reaching a century of League games for the reds. A European first 1972 - We played our first game in the new UEFA Cup, beating West Germans Eintracht Frankfurt, who were playing their first competitive fixture of the season. We won 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan and Emlyn Hughes. This was Bill Shankly’s fiftieth European game in charge of the reds. Two of our three other European games on this day also ended in victory. 1995 - We beat Russian outfit Spartak-Alania Vladikavkaz 2-1 in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign, Mirdzhalol Kasimov opened the scoring with Steve McManaman equalising before Jamie Redknapp struck a thirty-yard winner, with just 39 travelling reds present, all seated in the presidential box for their own safety! 1996 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye bagged the only goal of our European Cup Winners’ Cup opener at Finnish side Myllykosken Pallo-47. 2006 - We held PSV Eindhoven to a goalless draw in our opening UEFA Champions League group fixture in the Philips Stadion with Jamie Carragher appearing for the fiftieth time in the competition. Most recently 2021 – Mohamed Salah bagged his hundredth goal in Premier League football, including his time with Chelsea, to open the scoring at Leeds United. Fabinho netted after the break, before Pascal Struijk was dismissed for the home side following a challenge that left Harvey Elliott with a dislocated ankle. Sadio Mané struck in stoppage time to secure a 3-0 victory. 2015 – We lost 3-1 at Manchester United, with Divock Origi making his reds bow from the bench. Christian Benteke struck late on as we limped to defeat. Reporting in 2012 – The Hillsborough Independent Panel reported, shocking many people by revealing the extent of the establishment cover-up at the time of the disaster, its aftermath and ever since. It led to an unprecedented apology from Prime Minister David Cameron. Double debutants 2010 – Left-back Paul Konchesky and midfielder Raul Meireles both made their reds bows in our lifeless goalless draw at Birmingham City. Derby joy We have twice beaten Everton in Wartime league matches at Anfield on this day in history. 1942 - George Mills netted the only goal of the game. 1945 - Billy Liddell and Les Shannon were on the scoresheet as we won 2-1. A thumping win 1936 - We trounced Grimsby Town 7-1 in a First Division game at Anfield. Fred Howe and Vic Wright struck twice apiece, with Berry Nieuwenhuys, Jack Balmer and Matt Busby all also on target. Reds farewells 1931 - Harry Barkas played his fifth and final reds game as we lost 2-1 at Leicester City, with Gordon Gunson bagging our consolation. Ernie Hine struck one of his ten goals against the reds, with Sep Smith also on target. 1903 - Right-back Jack Chadburn played his second and last reds game as we lost 3-1 at home to The Wednesday, with forward Sydney Smith appearing for the second and final time. Jack Cox scored as Andrew Wilson struck two of his eight goals past us, with Harry Davis also on target. 1980 – Tommy Smith quit as youth team boss in order to concentrate on his business interests. Gunning for a draw We have twice drawn with Arsenal in First Division matches on this day in history. 1925 - Jimmy Walsh netted our goal at Highbury, with Charlie Buchan on target for the home side, to add to the eighteen strikes he had registered against the reds while with Sunderland. 1951 - The game at Anfield ended goalless. Mixed fortunes against the Hammers 1962 - We beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield thanks to an Ian St. John brace, with his second strike being the club’s 3,000th in top-flight football. Gerry Byrne played his hundredth reds game with Johnny Byrne on target for the visitors. 1998 - We lost 2-1 at Upton Park in a Premiership fixture, with Karl-Heinz Riedle nabbing our consolation after John Hartson and Eyal Berkovic had put the Irons ahead. Stevie out on loan 2002 - Young reserve Stephen Warnock joined Bradford City on loan. He played twelve times for the Bantams, scoring in a League defeat at Sheffield Wednesday. International debuts 1984 - Steve Nicol made his Scotland debut in their 6-1 defeat of Yugoslavia at Hampden Park, as John Wark won his 29th and final cap. Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Graeme Souness were both on the scoresheet. On the same day, Jan Mølby won his first cap as a reds player, and ninth in total, as Denmark beat Austria 3-1 in a friendly in Copenhagen. Mark Lawrenson, Michael Robinson, Ronnie Whelan, ex-red Joey Jones and future reds John Barnes, Glenn Hysén and Mark Wright all also featured in internationals that day. 1990 - Future red Gary McAllister won his first cap as a Leeds United player as Scotland beat Romania 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Hampden Park. John Barnes, Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton, Ronnie Whelan and future reds István Kozma, Jari Litmanen and Mark Wright all also played for their countries that day. 1932 – Future reds forward Sam English won the first of his two caps for Northern Ireland as they lost 4-0 to Scotland in Belfast in the British International Championships, with reds keeper Elisha Scott also in the side. On target for their countries 2007 - Fernando Torres bagged his first goal as a red as Spain beat Latvia 2-0 in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Oviedo. Future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos netted a brace, his last goals while with Eintracht Frankfurt, with John Arne Riise also on target as Norway were held to a 2-2 draw by Greece in Oslo, with ex-red Frode Kippe also in the home side. Ex-red Michael Owen struck twice as England beat Russia 3-0 in another qualifier, with Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Stewart Downing and ex-red Emile Heskey also featuring. Craig Bellamy bagged a brace while winning his first cap for Wales as a West Ham United player, as they won a Euro 2008 qualifier 5-2 in Slovakia, with John Toshack in charge. Andriy Voronin faced future red Alberto Aquilani, while Roy Hodgson managed a Finland side that included Sami Hyypiä and ex-red Daniel Sjölund as they were held to a goalless draw by Poland in Helsinki. Luis Suárez won his first cap as an Ajax player as Uruguay drew a friendly 0-0 in South Africa. Ray Clemence, Terry McDermott, Phil Neal and Phil Thompson all also played, while Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and future red John Wark turned out for Scotland as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Peru in a friendly at Hampden Park. 1990 - Future red Nick Barmby netted for England Under-18’s as they won 3-2 in a European Championships qualifier in Iceland. 2023 – Ex-reds loanee Ozan Kazak scored as Türkiye lost 4-2 to Japan in the Kirin Challenge Cup in Belgium. On the same day, ex-red Xherdan Shaqiri struck from the spot as Switzetrland beat Andorra 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Sion. Sadio Mané won his first cap as an Al Nassr player in Senegal’s 1-0 friendly defeat by Algeria in Dakar, with ex-red Ki-Jana Hoever playing for the Dutch Under-21’s for the sixth and last time as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in North Macedonia. Luis Díaz, Ben Doak, Wataru Endō, Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Núñez, Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, future red Giorgi Mamardashvili and ex-red Emre Can were all also in international action as Steve Clarke, Bernard Diomède and Rigobert Song all took charge of their countries. Also on the move 1998 - Ex-red Steve Nicol signed for Doncaster Rovers. He played 25 League games for them. 2008 - Robbie Fowler signed for Blackburn Rovers. He failed to score in six games as they struggled for form. On the same day, Steve Clarke resigned from Chelsea’s coaching staff, prior to joining West Ham United as First Team Coach three days later. 2009 – Reserves forward Michael Ngoo joined the reds from Southend United for a fee of up to £250,000. He was released in May 2014 without having reached the first team. 2012 – Head of Scouting Dave Fallows and Chief Scout Barry Hunter both started work. Meanwhile, left-back Grégory Vignal signed for Dundee United, but left two months later without having made a first-team appearance. 2017 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of his boyhood club Crystal Palace for the first time, leading them to 54 victories in 162 games in charge before leaving in May 2021. 2019 – Right-back Connor Randall signed for Bulgarian top-flight side Arda 1924 Kardzhali after eight senior appearances for the reds. 2022 – Keeper Loris Karius signed for Newcastle United, with his only appearance in his first campaign coming in the League Cup Final at Wembley. He joined the reds for £4.7m from 1. FSV Mainz 05 in July 2016, taking over the number one shirt. He made 49 first-team appearances, keeping 22 clean sheets but making several high-profile errors. Mixed fortunes against the Rams 1973 – Derby County beat us 3-1 at the Baseball Ground. Roger Davies bagged one of his five goals against the reds with Kevin Hector netting one of his four. Phil Boersma scored our goal, with Roy McFarland also on target for the home side. 1896 – Jimmy Methven put through his own net with Harry Bradshaw also netting as we beat Derby County 2-0 at Anfield, after Jack Robinson had saved a penalty from George Allan. Other reds games 1984 – Paul Walsh netted as we drew 1-1 at Manchester United. 1981 – We won 2-1 at Coventry City with Alan Kennedy bagging a rapid equaliser after we had fallen behind to a Gerry Daly goal in the first minute. Terry McDermott scored the winner from the spot as Bob Paisley reached 300 League games as reds boss. 1979 – Norwich City held us to a goalless draw at Anfield in Bob Paisley’s 300th game in charge in all competitions. 1973 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in L4. Martin Peters opened the scoring with one of his fourteen goals against the reds, before Chris Lawler equalised. Martin Chivers nabbed one of his seven goals past us. Pat Jennings saved a penalty from Emlyn Hughes but was judged to have left his line too early. Alec Lindsay converted the subsequent retake, with Chris Lawler netting the last-minute winner. 1956 – Dicky Robinson scored an own goal as we drew a Second Division encounter 1-1 at Middlesbrough, with Brian Clough bagging the first of his ten goals past us. 1923 – We lost 2-0 at Burnley. For the Dons 2004 - A match was staged between Wimbledon Old Boys and Liverpool Old Boys in aid of the AFC Wimbledon stadium fund. The game ended all square with the reds goal coming poetically from a John Aldridge penalty.

Transfer deadline day drama 2011 – We broke our record transfer twice in the same day, first when Luis Suárez arrived from Ajax for a fee of £22.8m. We then signed Andy Carroll for a British record £35m, with Fernando Torres then joining Chelsea for £50m, another British record. On the same day, left-back Paul Konchesky joined Nottingham Forest on loan while young midfielder Conor Thomas arrived from Coventry City on a temporary basis, although the move was not made permanent. Meanwhile, El-Hadji Diouf joined Rangers on loan from Blackburn Rovers and Daniel Sturridge joined Bolton Wanderers from Chelsea until the end of the season. 1923 – Scottish centre-half David Pratt signed from Bradford City. He played 84 times for the reds, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins. He left Anfield to sign for Bury in November 1927. In steps Royston 1994 - Roy Evans took over as Manager, after almost thirty years at Anfield. He remained in charge for nearly five years, leading us to a Coca-Cola Cup win in 1995, and the FA Cup Final a year later, although he struggled to deliver a consistent Championship challenge. In comes Al 2007 - Álvaro Arbeloa signed from Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña for £2.64m. He struck twice in 98 senior outings, playing right across the back four and impressing with his solid performances before moving to Real Madrid for £3.5m in July 2009. On the same day, young Spanish midfielder Francis Durán signed from Málaga for a compensation fee, while Uruguayan centre-back Ronald Huth arrived from Tacuary. Neither made the break-through at Anfield and have since moved on. Goalscoring feats 1976 - John Toshack bagged a genuine hat-trick of right-foot and left-foot shots and then a header as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 at Upton Park. Kevin Keegan netted our other goal late on. 2015 – We beat the Hammers 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to second-half strikes by Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge. 1959 - Terry Bleasdale scored an amazing eighteen goals as Liverpool Youth beat Pilkington Amateurs 19-0 in the Liverpool County F.A. Minor Cup 1st Round at Melwood. Tons up 2017 – Centre-half Dejan Lovren reached a century of reds games as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Chelsea, with Simon Mignolet saving a Diego Costa penalty. David Luiz gave the visitors the lead with an opportunistic free-kick, with Gini Wijnaldum heading in after the break. 1920 – Right-back Ephraim Longworth played his 200th reds game as we won an FA Cup Second Round tie 2-0 at Luton Town thanks to a brace from Billy Lacey. Final strikes 2021 – Gini Wijnaldum bagged his 22nd and last goal for the club as we won 3-1 behind closed doors at West Ham United, after Mohamed Salah had nabbed a brace. 1959 – We beat Charlton Athletic 3-2 at The Valley as we fell behind to a John Hewie strike and Ronnie Moran own goal before left-half Geoff Twentyman missed a penalty for the reds. Twentyman pulled a goal back, his nineteenth and last for the club, with Fred Morris and Jimmy Melia scoring in the second half to secure the Second Division points. Red villains We have twice won 2-0 at Aston Villa on this day over the years. 1988 - The first occasion was in a live televised Fourth Round FA Cup tie on our way to the Final when John Barnes and Peter Beardsley scored, with Bruce Grobbelaar recalled in goal following an injury that had seen Mike Hooper fill in for the previous four fixtures, as we secured a club record ninth consecutive clean sheet. 1996 - Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler gave us a Premiership victory in a game postponed from Boxing Day. Deaths galore 1995 - Former Chairman Sir John Smith died of cancer in Gayton. He had overseen eleven League titles and four European Cups amongst our many honours during his seventeen years in charge of the club. 1965 – Full-back Percy Saul died. He signed from Plymouth Argyle in April 1906, netting twice in 83 reds games, moving on to Coventry City in July 1909. 1961 – Right-back General Stevenson passed on. He joined the reds from Padham in December 1897, playing 22 times without scoring before joining Barnsley in June 1900. No change of ownership 2007 - DIC abandoned their proposed £450m takeover of the club, after David Moores decided to reconsider his options in the light of a revised bid from George Gillett. Craig’s farewell 2012 - Craig Bellamy bagged his eighteenth and final reds goal after Andy Carroll had given us the lead at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Dirk Kuyt then scored his fiftieth Premiership goal, our 500th League goal under Kenny Dalglish’s management to complete a 3-0 victory. On the same day, midfielder João Teixeira signed from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £830,000. He netted once in eight senior outings before moving on to Porto in July 2016. Derby stalemate 2004 - A very entertaining Anfield derby somehow ended goalless with Jerzy Dudek and especially Nigel Martyn pulling off a string of fine stops. Clem’s League start 1970 - Ray Clemence made the first of his 470 League appearances for the reds as we lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest. Off on loan 2006 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle joined Blackburn Rovers on loan, bagging just one goal in ten outings. He had only netted nine times in 66 reds games, although two thirds of these appearances came from off the bench. On the same day, reserves defender David Raven moved to Tranmere Rovers until the end of the season, after having only made four senior appearances for the reds. 2013 - Dani Pacheco joined S.D. Huesca on loan, netting five times in nineteen games. On the same day, ex-reds midfielder Alou Diarra joined Stade Rennais from West Ham United on a temporary basis, playing twelve times. 2014 – Reserves forward Michael Ngoo moved to Walsall on loan, netting once in fourteen outings. 2017 – Forward Jack Dunn joined Tranmere Rovers on loan, while ex-reds winger Sergi Canós left Norwich City to sign for Brentford and forward Jerome Sinclair joined Birmingham City on loan from Watford. On the same day, ex-reds forward Nabil El Zhar signed for Club Deportivo Leganés, for whom he scored eight goals in 82 games. 2019 – Canadian forward Liam Millar joined Kilmarnock on loan for the first time, netting once in fourteen outings. On the same day, midfielder Matty Virtue was sold to Blackpool, nabbing three goals in thirteen games before the end of the season. Ex-red Peter Crouch joined Burnley from Stoke City in a swap deal with Sam Vokes, failing to score in six appearances before retiring in the summer. Meanwhile, forward Jerome Sinclair joined Oxford United on loan from Watford, midfielder Jordan Rossiter made a temporary switch from Bury to Rangers, while centre-half Lloyd Jones re-joined Plymouth Argyle on loan from Luton Town. 2022 – Centre-half Nat Phillips joined Bournemouth on loan, playing eighteen times as they secured promotion back to the Premier League. On the same day, right-back Neco Williams joined Fulham, netting twice in fourteen outings as they too made it back into the top flight. On the same day, Tom Ince joined Reading on loan from Stoke City, making the move permanent five months later. 2005 - Craig Bellamy joined Celtic from Newcastle United on a temporary basis, after 43 goals in 128 outings for the Geordies. He struck nine goals in fifteen games for the Bhoys, helping them to claim the Scottish FA Cup. On the same day, Jermaine Pennant joined Birmingham City on loan from Arsenal. He played twelve times in this spell before signing permanently the following July. 1997 - Lee Jones joined Wrexham for a third loan spell, making six first-team appearances this time around. Out-foxed 1981 - Leicester City won 2-1 at Anfield, becoming the first side to complete a League double over us for six seasons, with our score coming from an Alan Young own goal. This was our first home defeat for three years, after 85 games without being beaten. A good cup day We have won all five of our FA Cup ties on this day over the years, conceding just once. 1990 - The most recent game saw us beat Norwich City 3-1 in a Fourth Round replay at Anfield. Steve Nicol and John Barnes scored, with Peter Beardsley adding a penalty. We made it as far as the Semi-final that season before losing out to Crystal Palace. Up against ten 1993 - Nigel Winterburn was sent off for Arsenal as we won 1-0 at Highbury, the first dismissal for an opposing team against us in the newly renamed Premier League. On our way to Wembley 1914 - We defeated non-League Gillingham 2-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Bob Ferguson bagging his second and final reds goal. Joe born 1934 – Winger Joe Dickson was born in Liverpool. He bagged four goals in six reds games after signing pro terms in June 1952. Award winners 2000 - Tranmere Rovers boss John Aldridge was named the Liverpool Echo’s Sports Personality Of The Year. 2002 - El-Hadji Diouf was named BBC African Player Of The Year, voted for by visitors to BBC Sport Online and listeners to the World Service’s Fast Track programme. Other moves 1929 - Centre-forward Tommy Reid left Anfield for Manchester United after thirty goals in 55 reds games. He had signed from Clydebank for £1,000 in April 1926. 2013 – Second choice keeper Alexander Doni joined Botafogo on a free transfer, having not even made it to the bench that season after four first-team outings and 46 stints as an unused substitute in the previous campaign, having arrived on a free transfer from Roma in July 2011. He had to retire seven months later due to heart problems. On the same day, winger Victor Moses joined Wigan Athletic from Crystal Palace for £2.5m after the Eagles went into administration. He had struck eleven times in 69 games in south London. Also on the move that day was Stephen Warnock, who left Aston Villa for Leeds United on a free transfer after four goals in 104 matches for the Villains. Meanwhile, Mario Balotelli joined AC Milan from Manchester City for an initial £19m after thirty goals in eighty games for the Sky Blues. 2006 - Danny Murphy joined Tottenham Hotspur from Charlton Athletic for a fee of up to £2m, having struck ten times in 64 games for the Addicks. On the same day, former reserves forward Steven Gillespie left Bristol City for Cheltenham Town on a free transfer, after two previous loan spells with the Gloucestershire outfit. He had netted just once in seventeen run-outs for City. 2007 - David Thompson joined Bolton Wanderers from Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee. Paul Dalglish signed for Hibernian from Livingston, with keeper Tony Warner moving to Barnsley on loan from Fulham. 2012 - Djibril Cissé joined Queens Park Rangers from S.S. Lazio for £4m, after five goals in 27 outings. On the same day, reserves keeper Martin Hansen left Anfield for Viborg on a free transfer. A European treble 1984 - John Wark bagged a hat-trick as we beat Polish champions Lech Poznań 4-0 at Anfield to progress to the Second Round of the European Cup 5-0 on aggregate, having also scored our goal in the away leg. Paul Walsh was also on target that night. Debutants 1903 - Jack Parkinson scored on his reds debut in our 2-1 win at Small Heath, with left-half George Fleming also on the scoresheet, scoring from the rebound after his own spot-kick was saved. 1926 - We also beat Birmingham City, as they were by then known, in the top flight with Vic Wright and Phil Taylor netting in our 2-0 win at Anfield. Euro disappointment 2007 - Olympique de Marseille became the first French side to win at Anfield, at the tenth attempt, when they won 1-0 in a Champions League group game, with Eric Gerets in charge of the visitors for the first time and ex-reds Djibril Cissé and Bolo Zenden both featuring. International beginning and end 1951 - Ex-reds centre-half Allenby Chilton won his second and final England cap in their 2-2 friendly draw with France at Highbury. 2001 – Future red Alberto Aquilani won his first cap for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Lithuania 2-0. On target 2009 – Krisztián Németh scored for Hungary Under-20’s in the World Championship Finals as Hungary beat the United Arab Emirates 2-0 in a group game in Egypt, with Péter Gulácsi also featuring. 2018 – Ki-Jana Hoever scored for the Dutch Under-17’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 6-4 in Sweden. 2016 – Rhian Brewster bagged a brace for England Under-17’s as they thrashed Germany 8-1 in a friendly in Croatia, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. On the same day, future red Dominik Szoboszlai featured for Hungary at the same level as they were thumped 4-0 by the Netherlands in a European Championships qualifier in Dabas. In and outs 1898 – Scottish half-back Barney Battles left the reds to join Celtic for a third spell. We went into the break 4-0 up, with half-time substitute Paul Pogba sent off for the home side after we had scored our fifth. This was Jürgen Klopp’s 200th win as Manager in a club record 331 games. More trebles for 1984 - Ian Rush bagged a hat-trick in torrential rain as we beat SL Benfica 3-1 at Anfield in a European Cup Second Round encounter. 1998 - Michael Owen scored four goals, including a penalty, as we thumped Nottingham Forest 5-1 at Anfield. Steve McManaman grabbed the other, with Dougie Freedman on target for the visitors. An Olympic champion 1908 - Arthur Berry was in the United Kingdom side that won Olympic gold by beating Denmark 2-0 in the Final at White City Stadium. Trebles against 1925 - Frank Osborne scored the first three of his four goals past us for Tottenham Hotspur as they beat us 3-1 in a First Division match at White Hart Lane, the first of three consecutive League trebles he struck for the Londoners, becoming the first player in the Football League’s history to achieve that feat. South African keeper Arthur Riley made his reds bow in this game, becoming the first player born outside the British Isles to represent the club. Dick Forshaw netted our goal. 1936 – We lost 5-2 at Brentford with Jack Balmer and Berry Nieuwenhuys nabbing our goals. Dave McCulloch bagged a treble, the first of his seven goals against the reds, with Bobby Reid scoring the first of his five and Jack Holliday also on target. Razor sharpened 1987 - Ray Houghton made his first-class reds debut as a rare Gary Gillespie goal was enough to hand us victory at Luton Town. 1960 - We also visited Kenilworth Road, when we won a League Cup Second Round replay 5-2, our first win in the new competition. Steven Gerrard headed a late consolation after the home side had taken the lead through a Sami Hyypiä own goal, his second in five days, and a Bobô strike. Blunting the Blades 2020 – Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota both struck as we came from behind to beat Sheffield United 2-1 behind closed doors at Anfield with left-back Andy Robertson playing his hundredth League game for the reds. 1953 – Jimmy Payne netted as we beat the Blades 3-0 in a top-flight fixture at Anfield, with Sammy Smyth bagging a brace. Stan no longer the man 2007 - Steve Staunton was sacked as Manager of the Republic of Ireland after 21 months in charge in which he had overseen just six wins in seventeen games. Red deaths 1981 – Left-half John Shield died. He signed from Bishop Auckland in December 1935 but made just one senior appearance before returning to his former club in October 1936. 1966 - Keeper Sam Hardy died in Chesterfield. He signed from his hometown club for £340 in May 1905 and had made 240 reds appearances, helping us to the League title in 1906 as well as winning fourteen England caps while at Anfield, and two FA Cups for Aston Villa after moving to the Midlands in May 1912. 1942 – Forward Harry Race died in World War II action in El Alamein, Egypt. He had joined the reds from Raby United in February 1928, scoring eighteen times in 43 games before being sold to Manchester City in August 1930 for £3,000. Carra’s unwelcome record 2010 - Jamie Carragher scored a club record eighth own goal as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Anfield, after Sotirios Kyrgiakos had headed in his third and last reds goal. Fernando Torres struck the winner, with all the goals coming in the second half. Martin Škrtel has since also put through his own net eight times. First and lasts 1959 - Louis Bimpson played his 102nd and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Portsmouth, with left-half Geoff Twentyman appearing for the 184th and last time. Ronnie Moran grabbed our goal early on in this Second Division fixture. 1903 – Full-back Joseph Hoare made the first of his seven senior appearances in our 3-1 top-flight defeat of Derby County at Anfield. Venison back from Turkey 1995 - Barry Venison joined Southampton from Galatasaray for £850,000. He played thirty times for the Saints before retiring from the game a year later. Management departures 2011 - Steve Nicol left as head coach of New England Revolution by mutual consent, having been appointed permanently in November 2002. 2012 – Paul Jewell stepped down as Manager of Ipswich Town, also by mutual consent, having led them to 29 victories in 85 games in charge since taking over in January 2011. 2022 – Midfielder Kyle Kelly signed as a professional, having joined the Academy in September 2020.
