Four apiece 1986 - Steve McMahon missed a penalty but struck four goals as we recorded the equal biggest ever win in the League Cup, thumping Fulham 10-0. Ian Rush and John Wark both netted braces with the other goals coming from Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol, while Rush also struck the post twice. Both managers played in this game, with Kenny Dalglish lining up against the Cottagers’ new player/manager Ray Lewington. 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged four in our 5-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, his hundredth reds game, with Steve Harkness nabbing our other goal late on. 1939 - We also entertained the Trotters, with Jack Balmer bagging a brace and Matt Busby also on target in a 3-0 friendly victory. Jonjo off 2012 - We lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Anfield, with Jonjo Shelvey somewhat harshly dismissed in the first half, and Fabio Borini having to go off injured at half-time. Steven Gerrard put us ahead straight after the break, but Rafael da Silva equalised before Robin van Persie converted a late, soft penalty to secure victory, one of his seven goals past us. Martin Kelly suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in this game. The first Irish red 1970 - Steve Heighway became the first ever red to represent the Republic of Ireland in their 2-0 friendly defeat at home to Poland, winning the first of his 33 caps less than a month after his senior reds debut. 1992 - Torben Piechnik won his first cap as a reds player, and tenth to date, as Denmark were held to a goalless draw by Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier in Vilnius. Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his twentieth cap on the same day as Norway beat the Netherlands in another qualifier in Oslo. Reds sold 1993 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper left Anfield after 73 reds games to join Newcastle United for £550,000. He made thirty appearances for the Toon before retiring from the game. 1982 – Forward Colin Russell moved on to Huddersfield Town. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. 1920 - Scottish international centre-forward Tom Miller was sold to Manchester United for £2,000, after 56 goals in 146 reds games, including appearing in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. He had been suspended for his part in the 1915 match-fixing scandal involving the reds and the Old Trafford side. Debutants galore 2008 – Keeper Diego Cavalieri and right-back Philipp Degen both made their reds debuts as we beat Crewe Alexandra 2-1 in a League Cup Third Round tie at Anfield, the hundredth game we had played in the competition on home turf, although one came as the ‘away’ side. Jack Taylor bagged one of his five goals past us, with Jimmy Settle netting one of his eleven. 1905 - Left-half Jim Bradley made his reds bow in our 2-0 win over Birmingham City at Anfield, when Robbie Robinson and Joe Hewitt were on target. 1933 - South African outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys made his debut in our 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur. Sam English nabbed a brace with Alf Hanson also on the scoresheet. 1950 - Centre-half Joe Cadden made his reds bow in our 2-1 defeat at Fulham, with Billy Liddell netting. 1957 - Winger Johnny Morrissey debuted in our 2-1 win at Stoke City, with Louis Bimpson and Tony Rowley grabbing the goals, and Geoff Twentyman putting through his own net. Mo again 2017 – Mohamed Salah scored in his third consecutive game as we won 3-2 in the League at Leicester City, just four days after being knocked out of the League Cup at the same venue. Philippe Coutinho also scored before Shinji Okazaki pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time. Jordan Henderson restored our two-goal advantage, but Jamie Vardy responded immediately with the sixth of his ten goals past us to date. Simon Mignolet then saved a Vardy spot-kick to ensure victory. Penalties galore 2014 – After a 2-2 draw, our League Cup Third Round tie with Middlesbrough at Anfield resulted in a 14-13 win on penalties, a club, competition and joint English professional record, with even keeper Simon Mignolet amongst the scorers. Midfielder Jordan Rossiter opened the scoring on his debut, with Jordan Williams making his only senior appearance. Adam Reach levelled to send the game into extra time before Suso struck his only goal in his last game for the club. However, Patrick Bamford converted a stoppage time spot kick to send the match to a shoot-out. 2015 – We beat League Two side Carlisle United 3-2 on penalties after another Third Round tie ended 1-1 after extra time. Keeper Ádám Bogdán saved three of the spot kicks on his reds bow while centre-half Martin Škrtel played his 300th reds game. Danny Ings had given us the lead before Derek Asamoah equalised before half time. Happy birthday Fred 1895 - Outside-left Fred Hopkin was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. He netted twelve times in 360 reds games after signing from Manchester United for £2,800 in May 1921, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s before re-joining former club Darlington in August 1931. On the same day, a benefit match was held for Matt McQueen at Anfield. He played 105 times for the reds between 1892 and 1899, and later became a director, before managing the side for five years in the 1920’s. An England International XI beat the reds 3-0, with Sheffield United’s Harry Hammond bagging a treble. 1931 – Welsh international centre-forward Des Palmer was born in Swansea. He signed from his hometown club in March 1959, in a £15,000 deal with right-half Roy Saunders moving in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury on his reserves bow, moving on to Johannesburg Ramblers in 1960. 2005 – Right-back Josh Davidson was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in October 2022. First goal against 1893 - Centre-forward David Henderson scored on his reds debut as we beat Small Heath 3-1, as we conceded our first ever League goal in our fourth match, netted by Caesar Jenkyns, with Jimmy Stott grabbing a brace. Willie signs on 1931 – Scottish right-back Willie Steel signed from St. Johnstone for £1,000. He failed to score in 128 reds games before being sold to Birmingham City for £5,000 in March 1935. Derby wins We have twice beaten Everton in other games on this day in history. 1989 - Ian Rush netted a brace to reach 150 League goals for the reds after John Barnes had equalised as we won 3-1 at Goodison, with ex-reds reserve Mike Newell having put the Toffees in front with one of his eight strikes against the reds. 1967 - Roger Hunt grabbed the only goal of the game at Anfield. This was our 2,500th League game. Double century 2006 - Mark González struck our 200th League goal against Tottenham Hotspur after the ball came back off the post from a failed Craig Bellamy tap-in, before Dirk Kuyt and John Arne Riise netted to complete a 3-0 victory. Not bribed 1922 – Before our 3-0 home League defeat of Burnley, keeper Elisha Scott, centre-half Walter Wadsworth and centre-forward Dick Johnson had all been offered £10 to let the visitors win. However, they reported this attempt to the Club Secretary, which was later dismissed as a hoax by the police. Dick Forshaw bagged a brace, with Harry Chambers also on target as forward Billy Lacey made his 200th League appearance for the reds. All sung out 2000 - Rigobert Song played his 38th and final reds game as we were held 1-1 by Sunderland at Anfield. Robbie Fowler played his 200th League game, with Michael Owen bagging our equaliser after Kevin Phillips had netted for the visitors. Five three times We have won 5-0 at Anfield on three separate occasions on this day in history. 1980 - Sammy Lee struck twice with Kenny Dalglish and David Fairclough also on the scoresheet as we met Third Division Swindon Town in a League Cup Third Round tie, as we also benefited from a Glen Cockerill own goal. 1972 - Phil Boersma, Alec Lindsay, Steve Heighway and Peter Cormack netted against Sheffield United to take us to the top of the First Division, with Kevin Keegan converting a penalty immediately after Tommy Smith had one saved for the second consecutive game. 1961 - Jimmy Melia grabbed a brace while Ian St. John, Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis also struck as we beat Bury in a Second Division meeting, our record ever victory over the Shakers. 1907 – Bobby Robinson bagged the only goal of our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round meeting with Bury at Anfield as we progressed to the next round. Award winners 2019 - Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were both named in the FIFA FIFPRO Men’s World 11 at The Best FIFA Football Awards in Milan, with Alisson named as The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper and Jürgen Klopp as The Best FIFA Men’s Coach, following UEFA Champions League glory in Madrid. Management moves 1998 - Steve McMahon left as Swindon Town boss by mutual consent after 201 games in charge, during which they were relegated but immediately bounced back as Second Division champions. 2010 - Paul Dalglish left as Head Coach of Tampa Bay by mutual consent, after they had lost 3-0 to Montreal which knocked them out of a play-off spot. 2011 – Dean Saunders was appointed Manager of Doncaster Rovers. However, they were relegated from the Championship in his first season in charge. He remained in charge until January 2013 when he left to take over at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Internationals on target 2001 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both netted for the French Under-17’s in their 2-1 defeat of reigning champions Brazil in the World Championships Quarter-final, in The Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago. 2013 – Harry Wilson scored for Wales Under-17’s in their 5-5 European Championships qualifying draw with Hungary in Slovenia. 2022 – Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as Egypt beat Niger 3-0 in a friendly in Alexandria. Darwin Núñez won his first cap as a reds player as Uruguay lost 1-0 to Iran in Austria, with Luis Suárez appearing for the first time since re-joining Club Nacional de Football. Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling represented England for the first time since moving to Chelsea in their 1-0 UEFA Nations League defeat in Italy and Ryan Gravenberch won his first cap since moving to Bayern München as the Netherlands Under-21’s won a friendly 2-1 in Belgium. Also in international action were Alisson Becker, Bobby Clark, Fabinho, Trent Kone-Doherty, Sepp van den Berg, future reds Wataru Endō, Alexis Mac Allister, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Dominik Szoboszlai and ex-reds Péter Gulácsi and Liam Millar, with Rigobert Song taking charge of Cameroon and Bernard Diomède managing France Under-18’s. 2021 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty played for the Republic of Ireland Under-16’s in their goalless friendly in Malta. Disappointment against the Baggies We have twice faced West Bromwich Albion in the First Division on this day in history, and have yet to win. 1911 - Jack Parkinson was on target as we lost 3-1 at Anfield. 1978 - Kenny Dalglish netted an opportunist equaliser in our 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns. He hid behind keeper Tony Godden and poked the ball home when he rolled it out. These were our first dropped points of the season, in our seventh League match. Winger Laurie Cunningham had opened the scoring for the home side, while Ray Clemence was playing his 500th reds game. Olympian reds 2000 - Brad Friedel played as the USA drew 2-2 with Japan in the Olympics Quarter-final in Adelaide, and then won the resulting penalty shoot-out 5-4 after extra time. On the same day, future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil in their 2-1 defeat by Cameroon after extra time in Brisbane. Mighty Mouse ties the knot 1964 - Kevin Keegan married Jean at St. Peter-in-Chains Catholic Church in Doncaster. Finn off the mark 1995 - Future reds right-back Steve Finnan scored on his debut for Birmingham City as they drew 1-1 at Watford. Fame at last 2010 - Ian Callaghan, Ray Clemence and Kenny Dalglish were all inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame at Hilton Hotel, Manchester, with Kenny doing so as a Manager, having previously been enrolled as a player. Other reds game 1987 – We drew the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Steve Nicol struck our goal, but we fell to Everton at the next hurdle. On the move 2022 – Keeper David Martin re-signed for Milton Keynes Dons as a Player/Coach, his third spell with the club. He failed to make a senior appearance this time around, being released at the end of the campaign, 2011 – Reserves forward David Amoo joined Bury on loan. He bagged four goals in 28 outings for the Shakers. 1998 – Future reds goalkeeping coach John Achterberg joined Tranmere Rovers on a free transfer from PSV Eindhoven. He played 312 times on the Wirral, before moving to Melwood in June 2009. 1987 - Reserves centre-back Mark Seagraves signed for Manchester City for £100,000. He made just fifty appearances in three years at Maine Road before joining Bolton Wanderers. 1983 - Future red Peter Beardsley signed for Newcastle United from Vancouver Whitecaps for £150,000. He netted 61 in 163 games for the Toon, before moving to Anfield in July 1987. Other internationals in action 1987 – Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to Portugal in Solna. 1997 – Future red Vladimír Šmicer appeared as the Czech Republic won a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Malta. 1998 – Future red Fernando Morientes featured as Spain beat Russia 1-0 in a friendly in Granada. 2003 – Future red Daniel Agger played for Denmark Under-20’s in their 1-0 defeat in the Ukraine. 2006 - Michael Collins, Laurence Gaughan and Shane O’Connor all appeared for the Republic of Ireland Under-17’s as they held Denmark to a goalless draw in a European Championships qualifier in Azerbaijan. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played as Turkey Under-17’s beat Norway 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Lithuania. -
The birth of LFC 1892 - Club founder John Houlding signed the Certificate of Change of Name to alter the name of the club residing at Anfield from Everton Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited to Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited. We started out in the Lancashire League that September, soon rising through the divisions and heading towards glory. Hola y adiós Rafa 2010 - Rafael Benítez left the club as boss by mutual consent. He had been in charge for six years, leading us to the European Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield during his six seasons in charge as we won 194 of his 350 games as Manager. 2015 - He was appointed Manager of Real Madrid, leading them to seventeen wins in 25 victories but remaining in charge for only seven months. Auf wiedersehen Kev 1977 - Kevin Keegan joined German side Hamburger SV for £500,000, a record fee for a British footballer and the most expensive player to that date in the Bundesliga. He had played 323 reds games and bagged exactly a hundred goals, helping us to claim the European Cup, three League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In comes Stéph 1999 - Stéphane Henchoz signed from relegated Blackburn Rovers for £3.5m, two weeks after his future partner Sami Hyypiä arrived from Dutch side Willem II. Stéph failed to score in his 205 reds appearances, but was a defensive rock, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Charity Shield and two League Cups before joining Celtic in January 2005. More red farewells 2012 – Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt was sold to Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü for €1m. He had arrived from Feyenoord for £9m in August 2006, with then Chairman David Moores having to lend the club the money for the transfer. He proved a willing worker, notching 71 times in 285 outings, including our consolation in the Champions League Final in Athens in 2007 and five derby strikes. He helped the club to claim the Carling Cup and reach the FA Cup Final in his final season in England. 1966 – Left-winger George Pither died. He struck once in twelve senior appearances after signing from Merthyr Town for £500 in November 1926, stepping in for the established Fred Hopkin. He moved to Crewe Alexandra in May 1928. 1944 - Right-back Alf West left Anfield for Reading, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. 1919 - James Scott left the reds to sign for Dumbarton back in his native Scotland, having made just ten senior reds appearances since signing from Ardeer Thistle in 1910. Fourteen without reply 1964 - We trounced a San Franciscan Select 14-0 on our North American tour, our record ever victory in any fixture, shortly after clinching our sixth League title. Alf Arrowsmith and Ian St. John scored four apiece at the Kezar Stadium, with our other goals coming from Alan A’Court, Ian Callaghan, Phil Chisnall, Bobby Graham, Ronnie Moran and Gordon Wallace. Trevor Roberts was in goal after Tommy Lawrence suffered a foot injury in training. Meanwhile, Chairman TV Williams was presented with the League title in London. 1948 - We were also in North America, when Billy Liddell, Jack Balmer, Bob Priday and Les Shannon struck as we beat the Montreal All Stars 4-2 at the Delorimier Stadium. Crouchie’s treble 2006 - Peter Crouch struck three times for England and also missed a penalty in their 6-0 friendly defeat of Jamaica at Old Trafford. This was the third consecutive international in which he had scored, while ex-red Michael Owen was also on target. Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Stewart Downing and ex-red David James also featured, with the latter winning his final cap while with Manchester City. Xabi Alonso, Luis García, future reds Philipp Degen and Fernando Torres and ex-red Milan Baroš also turned out in international friendlies that day. 2010 – Alonso also played for Spain as they beat South Korea 1-0 in a friendly in Austria, alongside Pepe Reina. 2012 – Alonso also played alongside fellow ex-reds Álvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres in a 1-0 defeat of China in Seville. Meanwhile, Daniel Sjölund featured as Finland lost the Baltic Cup Final to Latvia on penalties in Estonia, while future red Victor Moses was in World Cup qualifying action for Nigeria. Three reds skippers in one day 2003 - Steven Gerrard and future red Joe Cole scored as England beat Serbia & Montenegro 2-1 in a friendly at the Walkers Stadium, with this being Cole’s only goal for his country and last cap as a West Ham United player. International debutants 1995 - John Scales and future red Stan Collymore both made their England debuts as they beat Japan 2-1 at Wembley. They both only won a further two caps apiece. Reds internationals on target 2000 - Emile Heskey netted in England’s 2-1 friendly win in Malta. Ex-red Paul Ince won his fiftieth cap, while Robbie Fowler, future red Nick Barmby and ex-red Steve McManaman all also featured for Kevin Keegan’s side. Meanwhile, Patrik Berger was on target as the Czech Republic lost 3-2 to Germany in a friendly in Nuremberg. Dietmar Hamann, Vladimír Šmicer and future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege all also played. Management moves 1986 - 1960’s right-half Gordon Milne stepped down as Manager of Leicester City to become General Manager. He only remained in charge for six months before being suspended after an alleged clash with a player after a game at Watford, following which he left by mutual consent. International first and lasts in friendlies 1982 - Southampton’s Kevin Keegan captained England for the 31st and last time while winning his 62nd cap as they thumped Finland 4-1 in Helsinki. Phil Thompson and ex-red Ray Clemence also played. 1995 - Jason McAteer won his last cap as a Bolton Wanderers player, with skipper Ronnie Whelan winning his first cap while at Southend United, as the Republic of Ireland were held to a goalless draw in a European Championships qualifier in Liechtenstein. Phil Babb and ex-reds John Aldridge and Steve Staunton all also played. 1998 - Dean Saunders won his first cap as a Sheffield United player, and 62nd in total, as Wales won 3-0 in Malta 3-0 with future red Craig Bellamy netting his first goal for his country. Last-gasp heartache 1989 - Having already claimed the FA Cup in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster, we only had to avoid defeat at home to Arsenal by two clear goals or more to clinch our second double in four seasons. The Gunners took the lead in the second half when Alan Smith was judged to have headed in from an indirect free-kick, one of his nine goals against the reds. We held on until stoppage time, when Michael Thomas burst through to grab the decisive, heart-breaking second and take the title back to Highbury for the first time since 1971. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 300th League game for the club. A Busby birthday 1909 - Right-half Sir Matt Busby was born on this day in Orbiston, Lanarkshire. He joined the reds from Manchester City for £8,000 in March 1936, making 122 appearances for us, many as captain, notching three times. He was appointed as coach and Assistant Manager to George Kay at Anfield in May 1944, but he was released by the club the following February after disagreements with the board, taking over as Manager of Manchester United a few days later. 1991 – Reserves left-back Chris Mavinga was born in Meaux, France. He signed from Paris St. Germain in July 2009 but was sold to Stade Rennais for £1m two years later, having failed to break through to the first team. 1896 – Scottish left-back James Penman was born in Kelty, Fife. He signed from Glasgow Ashfield in 1919, but only played once before returning to his homeland to sign for Lochgelly United in 1921. Final despair 2018 – We lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv, as keeper Loris Karius had a personal nightmare in his 49th and final game for the club, with Mohamed Salah being forced off with injury after just half an hour. Karim Benzema scored one of his seven goals past us shortly after half time, but Sadio Mané levelled just four minutes later. However, Gareth Bale then struck twice to secure the trophy for the Spanish side for a record thirteenth time. Emre Can came off the bench to make his 167th and last appearance for the reds. A Philly dozen 1946 - We trounced a Philadelphia Select of American League side 12-0 in a friendly in the Yellow Jacket Stadium. Cyril Done struck four times, with Jack Balmer bagging a hat-trick and Phil Taylor and Willie Fagan both netting braces, and Bob Priday rounding out the scoring. Opening a new stadium 1978 - We played a game to commemorate the opening of the new Al Nasr Stadium in the United Arab Emirates, beating Al Nasr Club 5-0. Our scorers were fairly unusual, with substitute Colin Irwin and Ray Kennedy both bagging braces, and Alan Hansen also on target. 1980 - We returned to the Middle East to beat a Bahrain XI 2-1 on the Three Fives Gulf Football Tour. This time, Howard Gayle and Graeme Souness got on the scoresheet. Signing on 2014 - Brendan Rodgers signed a new contract, having just led the reds to within a whisker of the League title. However, the team regressed and he was sacked in October 2015. 2015 - Centre-half Kolo Touré signed a new contract, notching just once in 71 reds games before moving on to join Rodgers at Celtic in July 2016 after this deal expired. Recent defeats 2007 - We lost to a last-minute John O’Shea goal, despite Paul Scholes being sent off late on for the visitors, as Manchester United secured a third straight clean League sheet at Anfield, the first time they had ever achieved this. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. He signed from St. Mirren in February 1928 for £4,000 and struck four times in 254 reds games. He failed to win any honours during his spell at Anfield but had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren before joining the reds. The Scottish international bagged twelve goals in 45 reds games after signing from Abercorn in 1899. 1985 – South African half-back Hugh Gerhardi committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. He signed from Johannesburg-based Thistle in August 1952 but only played six senior games before returning to his homeland after just one season. Gary Mac steps down 2004 - Gary McAllister resigned as Manager of Coventry City to care for his seriously ill wife Denise. He had been on compassionate leave after she suffered a setback in her battle against cancer, but then decided to quit permanently. Sadly, she passed away soon after. Alf off target 1938 - Outside-left Alf Hanson missed a penalty in the first half as we beat Third Division South outfit Crystal Palace 3-1 after extra time in our FA Cup Third Round replay at Anfield. Ernie Waldron gave the visitors the lead, before John Shafto sent the tie into extra time. The Eagles’ Nick Collins scored an own goal, before Willie Fagan converted a late penalty. Unfortunately, the reds were later forced to apologise by the FA after making some disparaging comments about Palace in the programme. Birth of a legend 1922 - Billy Liddell was born in Townhill, Dunfermline. He joined the reds in July 1938 while still only sixteen, signing as an amateur from Lochgelly Violet for £200 and turning professional nine months later. He left the club in 1961, having struck 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. He was on target on his 26th birthday as we beat Nottingham Forest 4-1 in the Third Round of the FA Cup, with Albert Stubbins grabbing a brace and Bob Priday also on the scoresheet with his sixth and last reds goal. In comes Souey 1978 - Graeme Souness signed from Middlesbrough for £352,000 after 22 goals in 176 League games. He won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields in six years as a reds player, netting 55 times in 359 games. Florent Sinama-Pongolle bagged a brace with his first goal being our thirteenth from a substitute that season, a new club record, while his second was his ninth and last for the club. Xabi Alonso also struck twice, with our final goal being an outrageous strike from inside his own half, with the keeper making his way back from a corner. El-Hadji Diouf was unjustly sent off, with his red card later rescinded, and Jerzy Dudek went off injured to be replaced by debutant Patrice Luzi for the last quarter of an hour, becoming the 52nd senior keeper in our history, and only the fourth man to never concede a goal in his entire reds career between the sticks, although this was his only senior outing. 1978 - We lost at Stamford Bridge, being knocked out of the FA Cup at the Third Round stage, with Joey Jones playing his hundredth and last game against his future employers. Death of a legend 1968 - Ephraim Longworth died in Liverpool. Death of a legend 2002 - Legendary reds centre-forward Albert Stubbins died. He struck 83 times in 178 reds matches after signing from Newcastle United for a British record £12,500 fee in September 1946, helping to power us to the first League championship played after the Second World War. He was also the only footballer to appear on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album, and became a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade. 2010 – Israeli defender Avi Cohen died in Tel-Aviv, following a motorcycle crash. He was actually born in Egypt, and only made 24 appearances during his Anfield career after signing for £200,000 from Maccabi Tel-Aviv in July 1979, with his most memorable game coming in May 1980 as we clinched our twelfth League title. He put through his own net before scoring his only reds goal at the same end in the second half, as we beat Aston Villa 4-1. 2021 – Scouse forward Steve Peplow died. He joined the reds in June 1964, turning pro in January 1966 on his seventeenth birthday. He struck nineteen goals for the reserves in 1968/69, but only played three senior games, without finding the back of the net. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield prior to the First World War, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. In comes Wilson 1897 - Wing-half Charlie Wilson signed from Stockport County on a free transfer. He bagged three goals in 91 reds games before becoming a Scout at Anfield in 1905, a role he held until the Second World War. He struck 158 times in 297 games for us, moving on to Real Madrid in August 2004 for £8m after seven years’ great service to the reds, having helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. 1963 – Former Managing Director Christian Purslow was born in Cardiff. He was appointed in June 2009 to replace Rick Parry. He stood down in October 2010 after the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures. He is now Chief Executive of Aston Villa. In comes a striking legend 1925 - South African forward Gordon Hodgson signed from Transvaal. He bagged a club record eighteen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games, but was unable to claim a club medal in his time at Anfield, moving on to Aston Villa for £3,000 in January 1936. 1908 – Keeper Augustus Beeby joined the reds, but only made sixteen senior appearances before leaving for Manchester City in May 1911. Red farewells 2020 - Gérard Houllier died. He was appointed as joint Manager alongside Roy Evans in July 1998, taking over sole charge four months later. On the move again 2013 – Former reds First Team Coach Steve Clarke was sacked as Manager of West Bromwich Albion, with Kevin Keen also departing from his role as Joint-Assistant Head Coach. 2001 - Ex-reserves striker John Durnin signed for Second Division Port Vale from Rhyl on a free transfer. He only netted twice in fifty games while at Vale Park, before joining Conference side Accrington Stanley. 1975 – Ex-reds forward Alun Evans joined Walsall from Aston Villa for £30,000 after sixteen goals in 74 games for the Villains. Youngsters sign on 2004 - Reserve defenders David Raven and Zak Whitbread both signed new contracts until 2007. However, they have both subsequently left the club. Trebles galore 1977 - Terry McDermott grabbed a hat-trick as we thumped Hamburger SV 6-0 at Anfield in the second leg of the UEFA Super Cup, to win the trophy 7-1 on aggregate, with Phil Thompson, David Fairclough and Kenny Dalglish also on target. This game marked Kevin Keegan’s first return to Anfield after leaving for Germany in the summer, and he was roundly booed whenever he touched the ball. This was Bob Paisley’s 200th game in charge of the reds. 2017 – Philippe Coutinho scored three times as we trounced Spartak Moskva 7-0 at Anfield, our second victory of the UEFA Champions League group stage that season. The first came from the spot, with his second being his fiftieth for the club. Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah also struck, with Sadio Mané bagging a brace. 1930 - Bobby Gurney bagged three of his sixteen strikes against us as Sunderland beat us by the odd goal in eleven at Roker Park, with Tommy Lucas putting through his own net to open the scoring. Outside-right Danny McRorie struck his first reds goal with Fred Hopkin nabbing his twelfth and last for the club. Gordon Hodgson also added to a very late Jimmy Smith brace. We were without Hopkin for much of the game after he had to be carried off injured, spending half an hour unconscious in the dressing room. Rushie’s testimonial 1994 - A testimonial match for Ian Rush was staged at Anfield, with the reds seeing off Celtic 6-0. Sami’s record at the Bridge 2005 - Sami Hyypiä set a new club record for consecutive European games by an outfield player when he appeared for the 56th time in a row as our goalless draw at Chelsea ensured that we finished top of the group, with Dietmar Hamann managing to play the full game despite a horror tackle by Michael Essien. This guaranteed us a supposedly easier draw in the last sixteen, when we were paired with SL Benfica. 1987 - We entertained Chelsea in a live televised Sunday game, coming from behind to win this League meeting 2-1 thanks to a John Aldridge penalty and a late Steve McMahon goal, who notched in his third consecutive match. Red centurions 2010 – Pepe Reina kept his hundredth clean sheet in the League, in a new club record 198 games. Maxi Rodríguez added the third as ex-reds boss Gérard Houllier was given a warm welcome on his first return to L4. A few fans 2020 – We thrashed Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 at Anfield in front of just 2,000 fans as COVID restrictions were partially lifted. Mohamed Salah scored before the break, with Gini Wijnaldum and Joël Matip netting in the second half before Nélson Semedo put through his own net. Off for free 2000 - Steve Staunton rejoined Aston Villa on a free transfer after a second two-year spell at Anfield. He had struck seven times in 148 reds appearances in total. Turkish midfielder Nuri Şahin played his twelfth and last game for the reds, with the home side a man down for the final ten minutes after Giovanni Pasquale was sent off. 2014 – Sunderland held the reds to a goalless draw at Anfield as Martin Škrtel played his 200th League game for the club. 2015 – Škrtel put through his own net, a joint club record eighth own goal, as we lost 2-0 at Newcastle United with future red Gini Wijnaldum bagging the stoppage time second. Alberto Moreno had a leveller wrongly ruled out for offside. A win at Ewood 2008 - We won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Xabi Alonso and Yossi Benayoun striking after an hour. Roque Santa Cruz headed a goal back for the home side before Steven Gerrard bagged an injury time clincher. Team of the Year 2001 - The reds were named Team of the Year by the Sportswriters Association of Great Britain, following our five trophies that year. Signing on 1962 - Scottish full-back Bobby Thomson signed from Partick Thistle for £7,000. He only made eight first-team appearances before moving on to Luton Town in August 1965. After a goalless first half, Andy Cole put the visitors ahead, following an error by Bjørn Tore Kvarme. Robbie Fowler then equalised from the spot after Michael Owen was fouled. However, David Beckham put United back in front from a free-kick before Cole added his second from a corner, another of his eleven goals against the reds. A talented Dane 2005 - Future red Daniel Agger was named ‘Talent of the year’ for the second successive year by the Danish FA. Mixed fortunes against Spurs We have twice met Tottenham Hotspur on this day in history. 1980 - We won a top-flight meeting at Anfield 2-1, with David Johnson and Ray Kennedy on target. This was Kenny Dalglish’s 147th consecutive League appearance for the reds, but he missed our next two First Division games after coming off in this match shortly after an hour. Steve Archibald struck the first of his six goals past us. 1972 - We lost 3-1 at White Hart Lane in a League Cup Fifth Round replay with Ian Callaghan nabbing our late consolation. Happy birthday Willie 1939 - Left-half Willie Stevenson was born in Leith. He signed from Rangers for £20,000 in October 1962 and missed just nine League games in his first four seasons, making a total of 241 appearances and netting eighteen times. He helped us to two League titles and our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 before moving on to Stoke City in December 1967. A win at the Bridge 2008 - Xabi Alonso’s deflected strike was the only goal of our trip to Stamford Bridge, handing Chelsea their first home League defeat since February 2004, ending an 86-game unbeaten run. Alonso also hit the post with a second-half free-kick. Ton up for Didi 2002 - Dietmar Hamann played his hundredth reds League game as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield, with Jamie Redknapp making his first appearance back at Anfield since his transfer. Luis at the treble 2013 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick, his first at Anfield, as we thumped West Bromwich Albion 4-1, with James Morrison pulling one back from the spot before Daniel Sturridge completed the scoring. Reds firsts 2023 – Diogo Jota opened the scoring of our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield against Toulouse, but Thijs Dallinga soon levelled. Wataru Endō scored his first goal for the club with Darwin Núñez also on target before the break. Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah struck in the second half to complete a 5-1 win as midfielder James McConnell and left-back Calum Scanlon coming off the bench to make their senior bows. Into the Lions’ den 2004 - We won 3-0 at Millwall in a Third Round Carling Cup match as we headed towards a record tenth Final in the competition on our first visit to The New Den. Jerzy Dudek skippered the reds for the first time, while future Lion Zak Whitbread was making his reds bow. Salif Diao netted his third and final reds goal in the first half, with Milan Baroš adding a brace. Unfortunately, the game was marred by sick chants from the home fans that led to confrontations between the two sets of supporters. A rarity for Sami 2000 - Sami Hyypiä sat on the reds bench for the only time in his first five seasons at Anfield as a late Emile Heskey goal handed us victory over Czech side Slovan Liberec at Anfield in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Second Round tie. Robbie Fowler spurned a number of good chances, including a penalty. Sami did not reappear on the bench until March 2005. Robbie’s poor form could be partly explained by the fact that his future wife Kerrie had given birth to their second daughter, Jaya, earlier that day. A blooming treble 1912 - Rams legend Steve Bloomer bagged a hat-trick as we lost 4-2 to Derby County at the Baseball Ground, the last of his fourteen strikes past us. Arthur Metcalf netted both our goals, with Harry Leonard also on target for the home side. 1977 - We also faced the Rams when a David Fairclough brace handed us a 2-0 League Cup Third Round victory at Anfield. 1927 – Outside-left Fred Hopkin scored a hat-trick as we won a Lancashire Senior Cup game 5-2 at Southport, with Gordon Hodgson and Tom Reid also netting. Signing on 1896 – Scottish inside-right Andrew McCowie joined the reds from Cambuslang Hibernian. He struck eleven times in 35 games before joining Woolwich Arsenal in May 1899. Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top flight, at the end of which we were still seeking our first win at that level. Tom McInnes went down in history as the first derby goalscorer, with right-winger Alex Latta and left-winger John Bell also netting. The victors received a silk hat each, valued at twenty shillings, on top of their usual win bonus! 1923 - We also lost 2-1 to them in a First Division fixture at Anfield with Jimmy Walsh netting our consolation. Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Drama in court 2010 – The prospective sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures went through a dramatic day. First, current club owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks obtained a Temporary Restraining Order from a Texas District Court to stop the sale of the club to NESV, before the High Court ruled against Gillett and Hicks. The sale was finally completed two days later. Foxes run off with the points again 1964 - Leicester City came out on top for the third consecutive League season at Anfield, this time winning 1-0, with Mike Stringfellow nabbing one of his five goals against the reds. 1962 - We also lost, going down 3-0 at Filbert Street. The defender spent two years at Anfield after signing from Fulham for £50,000 in May 1980 but was unable to displace either Alan Kennedy or Phil Neal at full-back, making only seventeen first-team appearances before joining Luton Town in April 1982. 2002 – Midfielder Tom Hill was born in Formby. He made his senior debut in our League Cup Quarter-final defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, signing a new contract in August 2020. 1936 - Forward Bob McDougall died. Skipper Jonjo Shelvey had a penalty saved, while Andre Wisdom also featured. New defenders 1974 - Phil Neal signed from Northampton Town for £66,000. He made 650 reds appearances, netting 59 times while becoming our most decorated player of all time, including four European Cups, eight League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 1996 - Jamie Carragher signed professional terms at Anfield. He made a total of 737 reds appearances before retiring in the summer of 2013, in a multitude of positions, and is ranked number two in the club’s all-time appearance holders list. He netted just five times as he helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three League Cups and two FA Charity Shields. 1987 - Reserves defender Brian Mooney joined Preston North End on loan, later signing for them permanently for a £25,000 fee. He made a total of 283 appearances for the reds, scoring eleven times as he helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and the FA Charity Shield after signing from Newcastle United for £8m in July 1999. He moved on to both Bolton Wanderers and Manchester City in a bizarre transfer saga in July 2006 to bring his Anfield career to a close. 1971 - Steve Harkness was born in Carlisle. He made his reds debut on his twentieth birthday, in our 1-0 League win over Queens Park Rangers at Anfield, when Dean Saunders struck his first reds goal. He went on to net three times in 139 games during nearly ten years at Anfield, before teaming up with Graeme Souness again at SL Benfica. 1986 – Forward Nabil El Zhar was born in Alès, France. He joined the reds in October 2006, striking just once in 32 outings before joining Spanish side Levante U.D. in August 2011. 1875 – Forward John Parkinson was born in Blackpool. He arrived from his hometown club in May 1899, but only played once before returning to the Seasiders in May 1900. Anfield thumpings 2022 – We secured our joint record top-flight victory when we trounced Bournemouth 9-0, also the joint Premier League best for any side. Luis Díaz and Harvey Elliott both struck early on, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also bagging inside the first half hour. Off on loan 2003 - Right-back Markus Babbel joined Blackburn Rovers on loan, scoring three goals in 28 games. He had played 73 times for the reds, netting six times, and helping us to claim five trophies in 2001. 2013 – Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi moved to Stoke City for the season, nabbing five goals in 25 outings. He was appointed in April 2010 to locate a buyer for the club from George Gillett and Tom Hicks, which he succeeded in finding in New England Sports Ventures in October 2010, following a series of legal battles. He left his role in the following month and was knighted for his services to business in December 2010. 1982 – Albert Riera was born in Manacor in Mallorca. He signed from R.C.D. Espanyol for an initial £5.5m on transfer deadline day in September 2008, notching five times in 56 reds games before moving to Olympiacos for an initial £3.3m fee in July 2010. In comes Phil 1964 - Phil Chisnall signed from Manchester United for £25,000, after ten goals in 47 United games. A McEnglish debut 1893 - Keeper Billy McOwen made his reds bow as we drew 1-1 at Southport Central in our final ever Lancashire League fixture, with forward John Miller scoring his 25th and last goal in his 24th and final outing for the club. McOwen was the only Englishman to feature regularly in our ‘team of the Macs’, making 27 appearances in total. He died in April 2019. 1991 – Right-back Nathaniel Clyne was born in Stockwell, south London. He signed from Southampton for £12.5m in July 2015, notching twice in 103 reds games before being released in June 2020. 1976 - Fernando Morientes was born in Cilleros in Spain. He struck twelve times in 61 reds appearances following his £6.3m arrival from Real Madrid in January 2005, but moved on to Valencia in July 2006 after failing to fully convince in a reds shirt. He had helped us to claim the FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in his time at Anfield. 1968 - Former second-string defender Alex Watson was born in Liverpool. He signed professional terms in May 1985 but made just nine first-team appearances, including being on the winning side in the FA Charity Shield in 1988, before joining Bournemouth for £150,000 in January 1991. 1870 – Outside-right Tom Wyllie was born in Maybole, South Ayrshire. He bagged fifteen goals in 25 senior games after signing from Everton in 1982, as well as scoring the only goal of the first ever derby meeting with his former club, in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final in 1893. Scott Carson let in a goal from Fabio Cannavaro to give the Italians hope, although we held firm in the Stadio delle Alpi to reach the Semi-finals for the first time in twenty years. The club honoured the memory of the 39 victims of Heysel with a number of commemorative gestures in the lead-up to the match, including a fans match at the Academy and a Kop mosaic, while a banner carrying the theme ‘In Memoria e Amicizia’ was carried by Phil Neal and Michel Platini, the captains from back in 1985, from the Kop to the away end prior to kick-off. A Victory defeat for Ephraim 1919 - Right-back Ephraim Longworth played for the Football League in a Victory match, which a Scottish League team won 3-2 at Ibrox. On the same day, inside-forward Harry Lewis struck for the sixth consecutive game, as we beat Southport Vulcan 4-2 at Anfield in a Lancashire Section Subsidiary Competition fixture, as the Lancashire Senior Cup was then known. For Ibrox 1902 - Winger Jack Cox played for England, with Alex Raisbeck, and future reds keeper Ned Doig and inside-right George Livingstone all turning out for Scots in a British International Championships game at Ibrox Park that ended 1-1. However, 25 people died and 517 were injured when the back of the new West Tribune Stand collapsed due to heavy rainfall the previous night during the second half. Happy birthday Sammy 1959 - Sammy Lee was born in Liverpool. He had a fine career in the reds midfield, bagging nineteen goals in 295 games, helping us to two European Cups, four League titles, four League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. He returned as a coach in 1992, initially being put in charge of the reserves. He left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers, but returned to Anfield in May 2008 as Assistant Manager, staying in that role until June 2011. Legends’ farewells 1992 - A sad day as Bob Paisley had to retire from the board due to ill health. He died four years later. 2013 - Jamie Carragher announced his retirement from playing at the end of the season. The tough defender ended his career having bagged five goals in 737 reds appearances, leaving him second in the club’s all-time appearance holders. He helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and two FA Charity/Community Shields. Derby victory 1925 - Goals from centre-forward Danny Shone, outside-left Fred ‘Polly’ Hopkin and forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers handed us a 3-1 win over Everton at Anfield. Razor sheathed 1995 - Neil Ruddock was dismissed late on in our FA Cup Third Round replay at home to Burnley, with John Barnes nabbing the only goal. David N’Gog bagged the only goal of the game inside the first five minutes as we failed to reach the knock-out stages of the Champions League due to the other result in our group. 1998 - We were on our way out of the UEFA Cup as we lost 3-1 at Celta de Vigo in our Third Round first leg tie, after Michael Owen had opened the scoring. We were unable to turn things round in the second leg, which we also lost, 1-0. Current reds forward Iago Aspas was apparently a ball-boy in the away leg. Bon anniversaire 1947 – Former First-team coach Jacques Crevoisier was born in Delle, France. He worked under Gérard Houllier for two years after the departure of Patrice Bergues. Running riot against the Hornets 1987 - We beat Watford 4-0 at Anfield to return to the top of the table, with Steve McMahon, Ray Houghton, John Aldridge and John Barnes all on the scoresheet. 2018 – We won 3-0 at Vicarage Road, despite skipper Jordan Henderson being dismissed late on. He netted just once in 53 first-team appearances leading up to the First World War after signing from Airdrieonians for £80 in April 1909, including one in goal in only his second game! On target 2015 – Future red Rafael Camacho scored for Portugal Under-16’s in their 3-3 friendly draw with Belgium in Penafiel. 1965 - Chris Lawler and Tommy Smith both appeared for England Under-23’s as they beat Yugoslavia 2-1 in a friendly at The Dell. Out on loan 2010 – Keeper Chris Kirkland joined Leicester City on loan from Wigan Athletic, playing just three times for the Foxes. On the same day, Tony Warner was released by Sc***horpe United after making just two first-team appearances. 2005 - Second string centre-back Zak Whitbread moved to Millwall on loan. He played 27 times before signing permanently seven months later.
