God strikes again 2006 - Robbie Fowler struck the first goal of his second reds spell, opening the scoring against Fulham at Anfield. Masch off the mark 2008 - Javier Mascherano scored his first reds goal, a thunderous strike as we came from behind to beat Reading 2-1 at Anfield. Fernando Torres headed in a Steven Gerrard free-kick to net in his fourth consecutive game, to become the first red to score twenty League goals in a season since Robbie Fowler in 1995/96. This was our seventh straight victory in all competitions. Alberto off the mark 2010 - Alberto Aquilani scored his first reds goal as we thumped Portsmouth 4-1 at Anfield. Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel had already struck in the first half before the Italian netted our third goal in a six-minute spell. Torres added his second after the break with Nadir Belhadj nabbing a late consolation. 1947 – Albert Stubbins nabbed a brace as we won 2-1 at Fratton Park in a top-flight meeting, with right-half Harry Eastham playing his 68th and final reds game. Full-back Jim Harley reached a century of reds games. Happy birthdays 1946 - David Moores was born in Liverpool. He became Chairman in August 1991, remaining in charge until he sold his 51.5% of the shares in The Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Plc to George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks in February 2007. He resigned from the Board of Directors in June 2009. 1869 – Outside-left John Drummond was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Sheffield United in August 1894, scoring once in eighteen outings before moving on to Barnsley St. Peter’s the following year. Most recently 2021 – Diogo Jota netted the only goal behind closed doors at his former club Wolverhampton Wanderers. 2023 – We lost the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie 1-0 at Real Madrid, to crash out 6-2 on aggregate. Karim Benzema struck the most recent of his seven goals past us to date as the Spanish side ended our hopes in the competition for the third consecutive season. Seeing off the Portuguese We have twice on this day overcome Portuguese opposition to progress in European competition. 1978 - We defeated SL Benfica 4-1 at Anfield in the European Cup Third Round to go through 6-2 on aggregate, with Ian Callaghan scoring his 68th and final reds goal and Kenny Dalglish, Terry McDermott and Phil Neal also netting as Nené scored one of his three goals for Benfica against us. McDermott reached a century of reds games that evening. 2001 - We followed up a goalless away draw with a 2-0 home win over Porto in the UEFA Cup Quarter-final, thanks to Danny Murphy and Michael Owen both grabbing their first Anfield goals in Europe during a five-minute first-half spell. Goddard’s first 1902 - Outside-right ‘Graceful’ Arthur Goddard netted the first of his 77 reds goals in only his second game, as we drew 1-1 at Grimsby Town in a top-flight match. First and last games 1924 - Outside-right Archie Rawlings made his reds bow as Blackburn Rovers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. He went on to net ten times in 67 reds games. 1930 - Outside-left Gordon Gunson debuted in our 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers, with Jimmy Smith bagging both goals. 1950 - Defender Frank Christie made the first of his four reds appearances in a goalless draw at Manchester United. 1958 – Outside-right Tony McNamara played his tenth and last game as Billy Liddell netted the only goal of our Second Division trip to Lincoln City. Signing on 1930 – Keeper Andrew Aitken signed from Wallsend. He only ever made one senior reds appearance, in our 3-3 draw at Blackburn Rovers in December of that year, returning to amateur football with Mickley in April 1931. 1934 – Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop signed from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500, having already earned 26 England caps. He played 71 reds games without scoring. He moved on to Cardiff City in November 1937. 1938 – Left-half Jimmy McInnes signed from Third Lanark for £5,500. He struck once in 48 outings, joining the administrative staff after retiring from playing in 1946, taking over as Club Secretary in 1955. He stayed in this role until May 1965, when he sadly hanged himself above the Archway Stile, the old turnstile between the Kop and Kemlyn Road stands, just four days after we had claimed the FA Cup for the first time. 2024 – Forward Jayden Danns signed a new contract, having netted twice in four senior outings to that point. Red centurions 1952 - Inside-forward Kevin Baron made his hundredth reds appearance in a 3-3 draw at West Bromwich Albion. Billy Liddell, Bob Paisley and Albert Stubbins all struck, with Ronnie Allen netting two of his five goals against us and Reg Ryan also on target for the Baggies. 1975 – Kevin Keegan played his 200th game for the club with Phil Thompson reaching a century as Sheffield United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield with Emlyn Hughes guilty of a lame dive in an attempt to win a late penalty. 1913 – Right-back Ephraim Longworth reached a century of League games for the reds as we beat Middlesbrough 4-2 at Anfield, with half-back Harry Lowe bagging his second and final goal for the club and defender Ernest Peake netting for the sixth and last time. Arthur Metcalf also netted, with Jack Parkinson converting a penalty. Jackie Carr bagged two of his five strikes past us. Berry passes on 1953 - Forward Arthur Berry died on this day in 1953. Arthur won Olympic gold in both 1908 and 1912 but only made four senior reds appearances across two spells at Anfield. He was the son of Edwin Berry, who was reds Chairman in the late 1900’s. Cally for the League 1967 - Ian Callaghan played for the Football League as they beat a Scottish League side 3-0. Other birthdays 1910 - Jack ‘Nipper’ Roberts was born in Blundellsands. He only made one first team appearance after signing from Southport in May 1933, moving on to Wigan Athletic in June 1934. He was an all-round sportsman, even playing baseball for England. He became famous when he escaped from a prisoner-of-war camp in Italy, walking 400 miles to freedom despite a broken neck! 1928 - Keeper Dave Underwood was born in London. He signed from Watford for £7,000 in December 1953, playing fifty reds games before returning to Vicarage Road in July 1956. Michael misses 2000 - Michael Owen saw his penalty crash back off the bar but not over the line as Aston Villa held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Jamie Carragher was playing his hundredth reds game. Backing out 1948 - Left-back Barney Ramsden left Anfield to join Sunderland. He had arrived on a free transfer from Sheffield Victoria in March 1935, helping us to claim the first post-war League title in 1947, making a total of 63 first-team appearances without notching. 1935 – Right-back Willie Steel was sold to Birmingham City for £5,000. He failed to score in 128 reds games after signing from St. Johnstone in September 1931. Fred’s treble 1890 – Future reds forward Fred Geary reportedly struck a hat-trick on his England debut, as they trounced Ireland 9-1 in the British International Championships in Belfast. Poland for Wales 1939 - Future reds keeper George Poland made his senior debut for Wales, playing in their 3-1 British International Championships defeat of Ireland in Wrexham. He only won two full caps, plus a further four in wartime while on our books. Mixed fortunes against the Seasiders We have twice faced Blackpool in Wartime League matches on this day in history. 1919 - Harry Lewis struck a brace as we won 3-1 at Anfield, with Donald McKinlay also on target. 1941 - Willie Fagan netted twice from the spot as we lost 6-4 at Bloomfield Road, with Bob Paisley and Cyril Done also on target. Parry for Wales Reds right-half Maurice Parry twice played for Wales in the British International Championships on this day in history. 1902 - They thrashed Scotland 5-1 in Greenock, with future red Richard Morris also playing. 1909 - He played alongside clubmate Ernest Peake as they lost 2-0 to England at the City Ground in Nottingham. Clubmate Sam Hardy was in the England goal. On the same day, future red Billy Lacey played for Ireland in their 5-0 thumping by Scotland in Glasgow. 1920 - Hardy also represented his country as they lost 2-1 to Wales at Highbury in another British International Championships match, by which time he was playing for Aston Villa. Other reds games 1986 – We came from behind to win 2-1 at Southampton thanks to goals from John Wark and Ian Rush. 1980 – We beat Bristol City 3-1 at Ashton Gate. Ray Kennedy scored early on, with Kenny Dalglish then bagging a brace. 1969 – Ian St. John and Alun Evans stuck as we won 2-0 at Sunderland. 1939 – We held Huddersfield Town to a 1-1 draw at Leeds Road with Berry Nieuwenhuys on target. Newell departs 2007 - Mike Newell was sacked as Manager of Luton Town after publicly asking the Board of Directors where the money received from player sales had gone. American tie-up 2007 - The club announced an affiliation with the Long Island Junior Soccer League in New York. Also in international action 1899 – Ex-red Harry Bradshaw played for and England XI as they lost 2-1 to a Scottish side in a Players’ Union International at Crystal Palace. 1977 – Glenn Hysén played for the Swedish Under-18’s as they lost 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark. 2015 – Future red Bobby Adekanye played for the Dutch Under-16’s in their 3-1 defeat of the USA. 2017 – Rafael Camacho played for Portugal Under-17’s as they lost 2-0 to Spain in a European Championships qualifier in Rio Maior.

Philippe off the mark 2013 - Philippe Coutinho scored his first reds goal immediately after the break as we thumped Swansea City 5-0 at Anfield, after Steven Gerrard had put us in front from the spot before half-time after Luis Suárez was fouled. José Enrique struck his second and last reds goal with Suárez also scoring before Daniel Sturridge converted another penalty. Unfortunately, Fabio Borini dislocated his shoulder in this game. Matt the boss 1923 - Matt McQueen took charge of the reds for the first time as forward Dick Forshaw netted a hat-trick in a 3-0 home League win over Blackburn Rovers, with his first being his fiftieth reds goal. Centre-half David Pratt made the first of his 85 reds appearances in this game. A team of all nations 2024 – We won 4-1 at Brentford in what was the first League game we had played with players from eleven different nationalities starting the game. Darwin Núñez opened the scoring before the break, with Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo all on target in the second half. Ivan Toney netted for the home side. In comes Djimi 1999 - Djimi Traoré signed from Stade Lavallois Mayenne for £550,000. He made a total of 141 reds appearances, netting once before joining Charlton Athletic for £2m in August 2006, having helped us to claim the Champions League the year before. Tom’s bow 1912 - Inside-forward Tom Miller debuted in a 1-1 draw at home to The Wednesday, when Bobby Robinson scored his 64th and final reds goal and Sam Kirkman struck one of his four goals against the reds. 1906 - We also entertained the Owls, with Jack Cox bagging a brace in a 2-1 win, with his first goal being adjudged to have just crossed the line. Jimmy Stewart netted one of his five goals past us. FA Cup memories We have played six FA Cup ties on this day over the years, three of which have ended goalless. 1990 - On a more positive note, we beat Southampton 3-0 at Anfield in the Fifth Round, with the goals coming from Ian Rush, Peter Beardsley and Steve Nicol. Kenny’s Euro bow 2011 – Kenny Dalglish took charge of his first reds game in Europe as we held Sparta Praha to a goalless draw in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie in Prague. Macca for England 1988 - Steve McMahon won the first of his seventeen full international caps in England’s goalless friendly draw with Israel in Tel-Aviv as Peter Beardsley skippered his country for the only time. John Barnes and future red Mark Wright, who was winning his first cap since his move to Derby County, both also played. Ex-red Avi Cohen won his 51st and final official cap in this game. On the same day, Steve Nicol and future reds coach Steve Clarke played in Scotland’s 2-2 friendly draw in Saudi Arabia. 1993 - John Barnes represented his country again as England thumped San Marino 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley, while future red Gary McAllister played in Scotland’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Malta at Ibrox. 2016 - Bobby Duncan, Paul Glatzel and Curtis Jones all featured as England Under-15’s drew 1-1 with USA Under-16’s at St. George’s Park. 2017 – Duncan and Jones both played for England Under-16’s in their 5-1 mauling by Spain in Leek, with Elijah Dixon-Bonner captaining the side. Frank born 1927 – Defender Frank Christie was born in Scone, Perthshire. Beaten by the Trotters We have lost to Bolton Wanderers three times on this day in history. 1934 - We were knocked out of the FA Cup in the Fifth Round at Anfield, losing 3-0. Jack Milsom scored the last of his seven goals past us, with Ray Westwood nabbing one of his nine against the reds and George Taylor also on target. 1945 - We were beaten 2-1 in a Wartime League match at Burnden Park, with Jackie Campbell grabbing our consolation. 1951 - Billy Liddell was on the scoresheet late on as we lost an away top-flight meeting 2-1. Nat Lofthouse scored one of his eight goals against us, with Don Howe also netting. Final caps 1993 - Ex-reds reserves midfielder Kevin Sheedy won his 46th and final cap, also scoring in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Wales at Tolka Park in Dublin. He came off the bench to replace Ronnie Whelan, who had himself already come on as a substitute. On the same day, ex-reds reserves midfielder Jim Magilton netted in Northern Ireland’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying win in Albania. 2019 - Jarell Quansah won his second and last Under-16’s cap, scoring his only goal as they beat Norway 2-1 at St. George’s Park. Quasi back to Manchester 1998 - Peter Beardsley joined Manchester City on loan from Bolton Wanderers. He played six times in a month at Maine Road, without getting on the scoresheet. Other reds games 1973 – We drew 1-1 at Manchester City, with Phil Boersma on target, while captain Tommy Smith was sent off. 1968 – We were held to a goalless draw in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Walsall with kick-off delayed due to a crowd crush. We won the replay, being knocked out by West Bromwich Albion in the Sixth Round. 1962 – Preston North End held us to a goalless draw in a Fifth Round at Anfield, eventually losing out in a second replay. 1900 – We drew 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion in a Second Round encounter in L4, with Jack Cox nabbing our goal. Ged against a red 1993 - Gérard Houllier’s France thumped Israel 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Tel-Aviv. Reds forward Ronnie Rosenthal won his thirtieth cap in this game. On the move 2017 – Midfielder Momo Sissoko signed for Ternana, but he only stayed with the Italian side for 25 days. 2005 – Rickie Lambert stepped down a division when he left Stockport County to sign for Rochdale in League Two after nineteen goals in 110 games for the Hatters. On the same day, reserves winger Robbie Foy joined League Two side Chester City on loan. He played thirteen times while with the Blues, before moving on permanently to Sc***horpe United. 2000 - Ex-reds reserves forward John Durnin joined Carlisle United from Portsmouth on a free transfer. He struck twice in 22 League games for the Cumbrian outfit. On the same day, Michael Foley played for the Republic of Ireland Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 3-0 to Denmark. 2020 – Ex-reds winger Toni Silva signed for Taraz in Kazakhstan. Also in international action 1989 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye played for Norway Under-20’s as they lost a World Championships Finals group game 1-0 to Iraq in Saudi Arabia.

Red beginnings 1942 - The legendary Ian Callaghan was born in Toxteth. He signed professional terms in March 1960 and made a record 857 reds appearances, bagging 68 goals while helping us to five League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cup and three FA Charity Shields, as well as winning the Football Writers’ Player of the Year award in 1973/74. 1992 – Senegalese forward Sadio Mané was born in Sédhiou. He signed from Southampton for an initial £30m in June 2016, netting 120 times in 269 outings before moving on to Bayern München for an initial €32m in June 2022. He had helped us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup. 1930 - Keeper Tommy Younger was born in Edinburgh. He arrived from Hibernian in June 1956 for £9,000 and made 127 reds appearances, as well as winning 24 caps for Scotland. He returned north of the border after three years at Anfield to join Falkirk, and later became the President of the Scottish FA. He died in January 1984. 1926 – Defender Bert Shears played the first of his sixteen reds games with outside-right Archie Rawlings appearing for the 67th and last time as we won 1-0 at Bury thanks to a late Harry Chambers goal. 1915 – Left-half John Shield was born in South Shields. He moved from Bishop Auckland in ecember 1935, but only played one senior game before returning to his former club in October 1936. 1908 – Forward Charlie Hewitt was born in Greatham. He signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £75 in May 1907, bagging six goals in sixteen outings before joining West Bromwich Albion for the same fee the following April. Digger honoured 1988 - John Barnes was named the PFA Player of the Year, with Steve McMahon and Peter Beardsley rounding out the top three, and Alan Hansen also nominated in the shortlist of six contenders. Another Euro semi 2018 – We won 2-1 at Manchester City in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Quarter-final, to progress 5-1 on aggregate. Gabriel Jesus gave the home side a very early lead on the night, one of his six goals past us to date, before Leroy Sané had a goal incorrectly rules out for offside, a decision that led to City boss Pep Guardiola being sent to the stands for his protests. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino both scored after the break to take us through to a Semi-final against Roma. 2022 – We drew a League 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium, with Kevin de Bruyne giving the home side an early lead thanks to a deflection, one of his four strikes against us, before Diogo Jota equalised. Gabriel Jesus restored City’s lead just before the break, but birthday boy Sadio Mané levelled the scores again straight after half time to leave City one point ahead in the title race with seven games remaining. Beating the Potters 2016 – We thumped Stoke City 4-1 at Anfield, with Albert Moreno and Daniel Sturridge netting either side of Bojan Krkić’s headed goal before the break. This was Moreno’s third and final reds strike. Divock Origi bagged a second-half brace. 1971 - Peter Thompson struck the only goal of our top-flight trip to City’s old Victoria Ground stadium, his 54th and last goal for the club. Another keeper walks 2012 – Maxi Rodríguez scored his last two reds goals as we raced into a two-goal lead at Blackburn Rovers. However, following Pepe Reina’s dismissal in the previous game, his stand-in Alexander Doni was then sent off, with Brad Jones coming on to save a Yakubu penalty with his first touch, although he then drew the home side level with a brace that included another spot kick. Andy Carroll headed in a stoppage-time winner. We lost the second leg 2-1 but progressed to the Final on the away goals rule. 1985 – We thumped Greek champions Panathinaikos 4-0 at Anfield en route to our fifth European Cup Final in nine years. Ian Rush bagged a brace to add to goals from John Wark and Jim Beglin, his first senior strike. 1997 - Less happily, we were comprehensively beaten 3-0 in the first leg at Paris Saint-Germain in the European Cup Winners’ Cup with keeper David James playing his 200th reds game. Tonking City 1982 - Sammy Lee, Craig Johnston, Alan Kennedy and Ian Rush all netted as we thumped Manchester City 5-0 at Maine Road, with Phil Neal scoring from the spot. Mo again 2021 – Mohamed Salah scored in his third consecutive reds game as we came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield behind closed doors. Ollie Watkins gave the visitors the lead with one of his five goals past us to date, with Trent Alexander-Arnold bagging an injury time winner. 1976 – We shared a goalless draw at Aston Villa, with The Guardian stating that the reds “once more… employed their scorched earth policy for away matches”. Red endings 1897 – Preston North End held us to a goalless home draw as we ended the season in fifth place, with inside-forward Willie Michael playing his 23rd and last reds game and centre-half Robert Neill appearing for the 27th and final time. 1929 – We beat Huddersfield Town 3-1 at Leeds Road. Sam Wadsworth put through his own net with Gordon Hodgson bagging a brace as forward Bill Salisbury played his seventeenth and final reds game. 1925 – Danny Shone struck his 26th and final reds goal as we beat West Ham United 2-0 in L4, with Harry Chambers also on target. Derby despair We have twice faced Everton on this day in history, without winning. 1903 - We were held to a goalless top-flight draw at Anfield with forward Sam Raybould reaching a century of League outings for the reds. 1944 – We lost 3-0 in a Wartime League match that also counted for the Liverpool Cup. Twice against the Rams We have faced Derby County twice in top-flight matches on this day in history. 1914 - We beat the Rams at Anfield with Billy Banks bagging the only goal of the game as half-back Harry Lowe reached a century of reds games. 1920 - We lost 3-0 at the Baseball Ground, with Noah Burton bagging a brace and Harry Leonard converting a penalty. Full-back William Jenkinson played the last of his thirteen senior reds games, with John Miller appearing for the eighth and final time. Beating Wolves We have twice beaten Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 in First Division fixtures on this day in history. 1937 - Berry Nieuwenhuys struck at Anfield as forward Vic Wright made his 85th and final appearance for the club. 1979 - Alan Hansen headed his first League goal at Molineux in a mud-bath.
