Happy birthdays 1946 - Midfielder Peter Cormack was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Nottingham Forest for a club record £110,000 in July 1972 and won League title and UEFA Cup winners’ medals in his first season. He scored 26 times in his 178 reds appearances before moving on to Bristol City in November 1976 for £50,000. 1922 - Left-winger Peter Kippax was born in Burnley. He left his hometown club to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. 1928 - Post-war red Joe Shepherd was born. He never played a senior game for us. His two brothers, centre-forward Arthur and full-back Bill, were also Liverpool players at around the same time. Hark! It’s Harkness 1989 - Steve Harkness signed from Carlisle United for £75,000. He went on to make 139 appearances for the reds, bagging three goals before being sold to SL Benfica by Gérard Houllier for ten times his purchase price in March 1999. Andriy off the mark 2007 - Andriy Voronin scored his first two reds goals as we beat SV Werder Bremen 3-2 in a friendly in Switzerland. Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun and Fernando Torres all played their first games for the club. John Arne Riise was also on target with a 25-yard strike. Heading off 2007 - Mark González was sold to Real Betis Balompié for £4.2m. The Chilean international winger was actually born in Durban, South Africa. He struck three times in 36 games after signing from Albacete Balompié for £1.5m in October 2005, although work permit problems delayed his arrival until the following summer. 2001 - Christian Ziege was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £4m, only a year after his acrimonious transfer from Middlesbrough. He had notched twice in 32 appearances whilst at Anfield, including coming off the bench in Cardiff for the first leg of the treble. Milly off the mark 2015 – James Milner struck his first goal for the club as we beat Brisbane Roar 2-1 at their Suncorp Stadium, with winger Ryan Kent making his first senior appearance. Adam Lallana scored our other goal. 2016 – Danny Ings and Ben Woodburn netted as we won 2-0 at Wigan Athletic’s DW Stadium in a pre-season friendly. Double departure 1999 - Rob Jones signed for West Ham United on a non-contract basis. He had famously failed to score in his 243 reds appearances, but persistent back problems led to his departure from Anfield. He was unable to achieve full fitness while with the Hammers and subsequently retired from the game. On the very same day, second string keeper Tony Warner joined Millwall on a free transfer, after nearly a decade at Anfield without making a first team appearance. He joined Cardiff City from the Lions in July 2004 after 225 games for Millwall. 2017 - Keeper Ryan Fulton signed for Hamilton Academical, playing seven senior games in his first campaign with the Accies. Backroom changes 2007 - Ian Ayre was appointed as our new Commercial Director, although he would not actually take up the role for another month. He had previously been Chief Executive of Total Sports Asia, a brand solutions company advising international companies on rolling out Asian sports and entertainment campaigns, having also been Chief Executive and Chairman of Huddersfield Town. He said, “Being Liverpool born and bred, this is a dream job for me”. Ayre became the club’s CEO in May 2014, moving on from the reds when his contract expired three years later. 2002 - Hughie McAuley was confirmed as our new reserve team manager, leaving his position as the club’s Under-19’s boss. Academy Director Steve Heighway said, “Hughie is going down to Melwood to coach, but he will have a wide range of responsibilities and provide continuity between the Academy and Melwood. We are delighted for Hughie as he has been with us for a long time.” Leo the first 1997 - We lost 1-0 to IFK Göteborg in our first pre-season friendly, with Øyvind Leonhardsen making his debut appearance in a red shirt. This is one of only two games we have played on this day in history. Another honour for Ged 2002 - Gérard Houllier was awarded an honorary fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University in a ceremony at the city’s Anglican Cathedral. Bob hitched 1946 – Bob Paisley married Jessie Chandler at All Souls Church in Springwood. They remained happily married until his death in February 1996, having two sons and a daughter. Mixed Copa América fortunes 1995 - Future red Brad Friedel saved two penalties as the USA beat Mexico 4-1 in a shoot-out, following a goalless Quarter-final in Uruguay. 2011 – Lucas Leiva was sent off in extra time as Brazil were held to a goalless draw by Paraguay in La Plata, with the underdogs eventually triumphing 2-0 on penalties. Bamber on target 1920 - Reds right-half John Bamber scored as an England side trounced South Africa 9-1 in an FA Tour game in Cape Town. Clubmate Ephraim Longworth also played. Forwards on the move again 2018 – Winger Harry Wilson joined Derby County on loan, netting eighteen times in 49 outings as the Rams just missed out on promotion. On the same day, young forwards Taiwo Awoniyi and Rhian Brewster both signed new contracts, while ex-reds full-back Ryan McLaughlin joined Blackpool from Oldham Athletic after three goals in 62 games for the Latics. 2006 - Ex-reds reserves striker John Durnin was appointed to the coaching staff at Conference outfit Southport. He only stayed in the role for less than three months. 2003 - Ex-reserves forward Paul Dalglish joined Northern Irish side Linfield from Blackpool on a free transfer. He remained there less than six months, before moving to Modena in Italy. 2007 - Centre-half Dejan Lovren joined Inter Zaprešić on loan from Dinamo Zagreb, scoring once in 56 games across two seasons. 2012 – Future keeper Andy Lonergan joined Bolton Wanderers from Leeds United, where he was competing with Ádám Bogdán for the number one spot. He played 62 times before moving to Fulham in June 2015. 2023 – Left-back Yasser Larouci joined Sheffield United on loan from Troyes, making thirteen senior outings as the Blades finished bottom of the Premier League. On the same day, centre-half Ragnar Klavan signed as a player for Tallinna Kalev, having been their President since 2016. He played fourteen times in his first season there. Youngsters in Euro action 2000 - Future red Milan Baroš won his sixteenth cap for the Czech Republic Under-18’s as they drew 1-1 with Russia in a European Championship Finals group game in Augsburg. 2008 – Future reds Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge featured in England’s goalless draw in the Under-19’s European Championships in the Czech Republic. On the same day, Péter Gulácsi, Krisztián Németh and András Simon all played for Hungary as they beat Spain 1-0 in the same competition. 2018 – Adam Lewis played for England Under-19’s in their 3-2 defeat of Turkey in a European Championships Finals group game in Finland. On the same day, Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-19’s as they lost 2-1 to Ukraine in a European Championships Finals group game in Finland. World Cup win 1994 - Thiago Alcântara's father Mazinho played for Brazil in the World Cup Final in California. The game ended goalless after extra time, with the Brazilians beating Italy 3-2 on penalties. Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel saved one of the shoot-out spot-kicks. 1991 – Taffarel also represented his country as Brazil lost 3-2 to Argentina in a Copa América final round game in Chile. 1988 – Taffarel again played for Brazil, this time helping them to a 2-0 win over the host nation in the Australia Bicentenary Gold Cup Final in Sydney. Signing on 2020 – Midfielder Jake Cain signed a new contract with the reds. He had made his senior debut the preceding February in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield. 2021 – Polish keeper Fabian Mrozek signed pro terms, having joined the Academy the previous August. On the same day, future red Wataru Endō played for Japan Under-23’s in their 1-1 draw with Spain in Kobe.

In comes Spud 1997 - Danny Murphy arrived from Crewe Alexandra for an overall £3m fee. Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made 249 first-team appearances, scoring a useful 44 times, before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. He had helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Charity Shield in his time at the club. Double capture 2011 – Winger Stewart Downing signed from Aston Villa for £18.5m, while keeper Alexander Doni joined on a free transfer from Roma. Downing netted seven times in 91 outings before moving to West Ham United for £6m in August 2013, as well as scoring in the shoot-out as we claimed the Carling Cup at Wembley in 2012. Doni featured four times before joining Botafogo in his native Brazil in January 2013 having apparently suffered a heart attack during a routine medical in the summer of 2012. Final despair 2018 – Dejan Lovren played in the World Cup Final in Moscow, with France beating Croatia 4-2. 2007 - Javier Mascherano was on the losing side in the Copa América Final, as Argentina were beaten 3-0 by future red Alexander Doni’s Brazil in Venezuela. Meanwhile, Emiliano Insúa featured as Argentina Under-20’s beat Mexico 1-0 in the Quarter-final of the World Championships in Ottawa. Off goes Igor 2005 - Igor Bišcan signed for Panathinaikos after 118 reds games. The big Croat netted three times as he helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001, the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role on the road to Istanbul. He had arrived from Dinamo Zagreb for £5.5m in December 2000. 1969 – Keeper John Ogston moved on to Doncaster Rovers, after a successful loan spell. He signed from his hometown club Aberdeen for £10,000 in September 1965 having played over 200 games for the Dons, but only appeared once for the reds. Other arrivals 1989 – Swedish centre-half Glenn Hysén signed from Fiorentina for £600,000. He went on to make 93 appearances, notching three times and helping us to our most recent title win in 1990, as well as the FA Charity Shield on his debut. He returned to his hometown to sign for GAIS in May 1992. 2014 - Serbian winger Lazar Marković signed from SL Benfica for £19.8m. He struck three times in 34 games before spending much of his time out on loan, moving on to Fulham for free in February 2019. Bellers off the mark 2006 - Paul Anderson and Craig Bellamy both scored in their first reds games as we won a friendly 2-0 at Wrexham. Also making their first senior appearances that day were Godwin Antwi, Danny Guthrie, Adam Hammill, Jack Hobbs, Besian Idrizaj, David Martin, Danny O'Donnell, Gabriel Paletta, Lee Peltier, Miki Roqué, James Smith and Robbie Threlfall. Keeping bows 2022 – Custodians Harvey Davies and Fabian Mrozek both played their first reds games as we beat Crystal Palace 2-0 to secure the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022, thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah. More reds firsts 2009 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi, right-back Glen Johnson and centre-backs Daniel Ayala and Mikel San José all made their reds bows as we were held to a goalless draw in our friendly with St. Gallen 1879 in their AFG Arena in Switzerland. Beaten again 2020 – Arsenal came from behind to win 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium behind closed doors, as we fell to only our third League defeat of the season. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, but Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson both capitalised on reds errors to give the Gunners a half-time lead, which they held on to despite a second-half siege by the visitors. Bonne anniversaire 1981 - French midfielder Alou Diarra was born in Villepinte. After his free transfer from Bayern München in July 2002, he spent three seasons on loan in France, first at Le Havre AC, and then at Bastia and Racing Club de Lens, who he signed permanently for in June 2005. His only appearance in a red shirt came in a friendly win in Le Havre, when he enjoyed the rare distinction of returning to the pitch after having been substituted, as a replacement for Vegard Heggem. Suso the champion 2012 – Suso featured as Spain Under-19’s beat Greece 1-0 in the European Championships Final in Estonia. 2016 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-19’s as they beat the Netherlands 2-1 in a group stage game in Germany, with Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter also in action. This was his second and last strike at this level. Stevie signs on again 2013 – Steven Gerrard signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2015. He struck 186 times in 710 reds games, moving on to LA Galaxy in July 2015, before returning to the reds on the Academy staff. Redders in charge 1999 - It was confirmed that Jamie Redknapp would take over from the departed Paul Ince as reds captain. Robbie Fowler was appointed as his deputy. Unfortunately, much of his time as skipper was blighted by injury. Another birth and death 1920 - Keeper Ray Minshull was born in Bolton. He spent most of his five years at Anfield as deputy to Cyril Sidlow, making just 31 first-team appearances after joining the reds in September 1946. He left for Southport in June 1951, playing more than 200 times for them, and later became Player/Manager at Wigan Athletic. 1953 – Forward Dave Wright died. He bagged 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games after signing from Sunderland in March 1930. He remained at Anfield until July 1934, when he joined Hull City for £1,000. On the move 2003 – Future reds right-back Glen Johnson joined Chelsea from West Ham United for £6m, becoming the first signing of the Roman Abramovich era. He bagged four goals in 71 outings before joining Portsmouth in August 2006, initially on loan. On the same day, ex-reds reserves defender Alex Watson left basement side Exeter City for nearby Southern League side Taunton Town after one goal in 51 outings since signing on free transfer from Torquay United two years earlier. 1997 - Ex-red Ray Houghton signed for Reading from Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He struck just once in 56 appearances in his two seasons with the Royals before moving on to Stevenage Borough. 2016 – Ex-reds right-back Antonio Barragán joined Middlesbrough from Valencia, playing 27 times as they were relegated in his only campaign on Teesside, moving on to Real Betis Balompié in July 2017. 1993 - Ex-reserves striker John Durnin joined Portsmouth from Oxford United for £200,000, four years after moving to the Manor Ground from Anfield. He bagged just 33 goals in his 207 appearances for Pompey before moving on to Carlisle United on a free transfer. 2006 - Former reserves defender Gareth Roberts signed for Doncaster Rovers from Tranmere Rovers. He netted eight times in 165 games for his new club helping them to reach and remain in the Championship, before moving on to Derby County in July 2010. 2019 – Left-back Joe Maguire signed for Accrington Stanley, playing seventeen times before being released in May 2021. Also in international action 1991 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil in their 3-1 defeat of Ecuador in a Copa América group game in Chile. 2001 – Future red Kolo Touré played as the Ivory Coast drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 in Congo. 2004 – Arnaud Bühler appeared for Switzerland Under-19’s in their 2-0 defeat of Belgium in a European Championship Finals group game in Aarau. 2011 – Future red Mohamed Salah represented Egypt Under-20’s as they won a friendly 1-0 in Costa Rica.

Happy birthday Saint 1938 - Ian St. John was born in Motherwell. He joined from his hometown club in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. The Saint scored 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final and also helped us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield, before moving to South Africa in February 1971 to join Hellenic. 1988 – Former reserves centre-half Godwin Antwi was born in Kumasi in Ghana. He appeared in our victorious FA Youth Cup campaign in 2006 but spent most of his time out on loan. He was released in June 2009 and was last seen playing for Melaka United in Malaysia. 1936 – Left-winger Ron Smith was born in Liverpool. He signed amateur terms in 1955, turning professional two years later. However, he moved on to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in 1959, having failed to break through to the first team. In comes Tommy 1956 – Scottish keeper Tommy Younger signed from Hibernian for £9,000. He made 127 reds appearances, as well as winning 24 caps for Scotland. He returned north of the border after three years at Anfield to join Falkirk, and later became the President of the Scottish FA. He died in January 1984. Red trebles 1922 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers bagged a hat-trick as we beat Genoa 4-1 in a friendly at their Stadio di Marassi. Dick Forshaw nabbed the other. 1953 - Billy Liddell netted a treble as we beat a Chicago All Stars side 4-2 at Soldier Field, with Kevin Baron also on target. Disaster strikes for Djibril again 2006 - Djibril Cissé broke his leg while winning his thirtieth cap in France’s 3-1 friendly defeat of China in Saint-Étienne. Xabi Alonso, Luis García, Harry Kewell and Pepe Reina all also featured in friendlies that day, with future red Fernando Torres on target in Spain’s 2-1 defeat of Croatia in Geneva. 2017 – Ex-reds Iago Aspas, Sebastián Coates and Pepe Reina all featured in international friendlies. 2019 – Aspas played for Spain again in their 4-1 European Championships qualifying win in the Faroe Islands. Ex-reds Nikolay Mihaylov and Brad Smith were also in international action that day. Lancs champs again 1947 – We claimed the Lancashire Senior Cup for the seventh time by beating Bury 2-1 at Anfield in the Final. Albert Stubbins and Jack Balmer struck our goals. On the move 2013 – Hungarian keeper Péter Gulácsi joined Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg on a free transfer. He had sat on the reds bench on 51 occasions without making a senior appearance. 2002 - Nicolas Anelka joined Manchester City from Paris Saint-Germain for £13m. He struck 46 times in 103 games for City before joining Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü for £7m in January 2005. Christian milestones 2000 - Future red Christian Ziege won his fiftieth cap in Germany’s 8-2 trouncing of Liechtenstein in a friendly in Freiburg im Breisgau. Dietmar Hamann and future red Markus Babbel both also played. On the same day, Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-15’s as they lost 2-0 to Argentina. 1997 - Ziege won his last cap as a Bayern München player, and 31st to date, as the Germans were held to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in the Ukraine. On the same day, future red Paul Ince featured in England’s 1-0 defeat of France in Le Tournoi in Montpellier, while fellow future red Alex Manninger played in a 3-1 win for Austria Under-21’s in a European Championships qualifying win in Latvia and Vegard Heggem featuring as Norway lost a qualifier 2-0 in Hungary. New contracts 2007 - Xabi Alonso and Pepe Reina both signed new contracts until 2012. Reina was sold to Bayern München for £2m in August 2014 after 394 first-team outings, while Alonso moved to Real Madrid for £30m five years earlier after nineteen goals in 210 games. 2018 – Ovie Ejaria signed a new contract, joining Rangers on loan on the same day. He netted twice in 28 games for the Gers. 2022 – Polish keeper Fabian Mrozek signed a new contract, having joined the Academy in August 2020, turning pro eleven months later. He has made it onto the first-team bench on six occasions so far. Coaching moves 2012 – Following the sacking of boss Kenny Dalglish, the departures of Steve Clarke and Kevin Keen as First Team Coaches were announced. They had been at the club for seventeen and eleven months, respectively. 2016 – Ex-reds coach Paco Herrera was appointed Manager of Real Valladolid, remaining in charge for a year. 2021 – Keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili joined Valencia on loan from Dinamo Tbilisi in his native Georgia, later making the move permanent. He played 103 times before signing on with the reds in August 2024, but was immediately loaned back to los ches. Recent international goals 2022 - Sadio Mané scored from the spot while winning his last cap as a reds player as Senegal beat Rwanda 1-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Dakar. Fulham's Fábio Carvalho was on target while playing for Portugal Under-21’s for the final time as they thrashed Liechtenstein 9-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Vaduz, while Sepp van den Berg netted for the Netherlands at the same level for the first time as they thumped Gibraltar 6-0 in a qualifier in Almere. Curtis Jones, future red Dominik Szoboszlai and ex-reds Ozan Kabak and Raheem Sterling also played for their countries that day. 2021 – Takumi Minamino struck in Japan’s 4-1 World Cup qualifying defeat of Tajikistan in Suita, so scoring in his third straight game for his country. Meanwhile, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen both featured in England’s 1-0 defeat of Argentina in Japan, with Owen winning the penalty from which England scored. Stan from a corner 1992 - Ex-red Steve Staunton scored for the Republic of Ireland direct from a corner as they beat Portugal 2-0 in the US Cup in Boston. Ray Houghton and ex-red John Aldridge both also featured. This was Stan’s first strike in his first spell as an Aston Villa player, and he also converted direct from a corner against Northern Ireland at Lansdowne Road ten months later! Ray Houghton was appearing for the last time as a red. King Kenny on target 1979 - Kenny Dalglish struck in Scotland’s 4-0 thumping of Norway in a European Championships qualifier in Oslo. Future red John Wark was also in the side. 1978 - Dalglish also turned out as the Scots were held to a 1-1 draw by Iran in a World Cup Finals fixture in Argentina. In the process he became his country’s most capped player with 56, going on to play 102 times in total, still a record. Future reds Joe Corrigan and Alan Kennedy appeared for England B on the same day as they won 4-0 in New Zealand. Thumped at Deepdale 1941 - We were beaten 6-1 at Preston North End in a Wartime League game with Thomas Lyon bagging our consolation in his only ever guest appearance for the reds. First and last caps 2018 – Trent Alexander-Arnold made his senior England debut in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Costa Rica at Elland Road, with Jordan Henderson also in action. Liam Millar played for Canada Under-23’s on the same day, with ex-red Carl Medjani winning his 62nd and last cap for Algeria in a 3-0 defeat by Portugal in Lisbon. 2016 – Brad Smith won his last cap as a reds player in Australia’s 2-1 defeat by Greece in Sydney.
