King Kenny at Wembley 1978 - Kenny Dalglish netted the only goal of the game as we triumphed over Club Brugge in our tenth game to date at Wembley, to become the first British side to retain the European Cup. The King chipped the ball over the advancing Belgian keeper shortly after the hour mark following Graeme Souness’s clever pass to him. Clinching the double 1986 - We secured the second half of the double in the first all-Merseyside FA Cup Final. We became the first team to win the FA Cup without an Englishman in the team, with Ian Rush grabbing a brace, to go with Craig Johnston’s goal in our 3-1 victory after Gary Lineker had put the Blues in front at the break with one of his six goals past us. Even more Finals 1973 - We beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 at Anfield in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Final, to set us on course for our first European trophy. Kevin Keegan netted a brace, with Larry Lloyd also on the scoresheet, while both keepers saved a penalty in the game, from Keegan and Jupp Heynckes. The game had been abandoned the day before due to bad weather, with Shanks bringing in John Toshack for Brian Hall for the rearranged game. 1922 - We played in our first Charity Shield, losing 1-0 to FA Cup winners Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford, the last time this event was staged at the end of the season and the first time it was played outside of London. We were presented with the League title that day as well. Ephraim arrives 1910 - Right-back Ephraim Longworth signed from Leyton. He played for the reds 370 times across the next two decades, without finding the back of the net. He helped us to two League titles and became the first Liverpool player to captain England in May 1921. He then served as Reserve team trainer, before joining the ground staff. Mo the best 2018 - Mohamed Salah was presented with the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award in London, towards the end of a season in which he notched 44 times in 52 games, helping us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. The beginning of the end for Roy 1998 - Roy Evans’ last game as sole Manager came as we lost 1-0 at Derby County in our most recent game on this day, our first game at their new Pride Park, with Paulo Wanchope on target with the first of his four strikes past us as Michael Thomas appeared for the 163rd and final time. We finished the season in third to qualify for the UEFA Cup, twelve points behind Manchester United in second. By the start of the next season Gérard Houllier was alongside him for a short-lived joint management venture. 2010 – Fulham boss Roy Hodgson was named LMA Manager of the Year by a record number of votes, having guided them to the UEFA Europa League Final. More arrivals 2010 – Young midfielder Jonjo Shelvey signed from Charlton Athletic for £1.7m. He had become their youngest ever first-team player, appearing at Barnsley the age of sixteen years and 59 days in April 2008. He arrived at Anfield having bagged eight goals in 49 outings for the Addicks, moving on to Swansea City for £5m in July 2013 after seven strikes in 69 games. 2021 – Forward Fidel O’Rourke signed a new contract, having joined the Academy at Under-14’s level. He was released in July 2023, later joining Prescot Cables. Happy birthdays 1988 - Adam Lallana was born in St. Albans. He signed from Southampton in July 2014 for £23m, notching 22 times in 178 outings for the reds, helping us to claim the Premier League title and FIFA Club World Cup before joining Brighton & Hove Albion in July 2020. 1978 - Bruno Cheyrou was born in Suresnes, France. He made 48 senior reds appearances following his £3.7m capture from Lille OSC Métropole in July 2002, netting five times, and is now back in France with Nantes. 1953 - Midfielder Ian McDonald was born in Barrow-in-Furness. He moved to Anfield from Workington in 1974, but could not break into the first team. He moved on to Mansfield in July 1975, helping them to claim the Third Division title in 1976/77. Most recently 2022 – We won 2-1 at Aston Villa. Douglas Luiz gave the home side an early lead, but Joël Matip rapidly levelled. Sadio Mané headed in the winner as we kept the pressure on Manchester City in the title race. 2015 - We drew 1-1 at Chelsea, with John Terry nodding the home side in front. Steven Gerrard headed in just before the break. We had given the recently-crowned champions a guard of honour as they came out onto the pitch, while Philippe Coutinho reached a century of reds games. For Thommo 1983 - A testimonial for reds stalwart Phil Thompson was staged at Anfield as an England XI won 2-0, with ex-reds skipper Emlyn Hughes guesting for the reds. Paul Mariner and Gary Shaw scored for the England side. 1996 - A Liverpool 88 XI drew 4-4 with Tranmere Rovers in a testimonial match for John Aldridge at Prenton Park. Don at the double 1995 – Ex-red Don Hutchison bagged a brace as we lost 3-0 at West Ham United, with midfielder Matty Holmes having opened the scoring. Mark Walters made his 124th and last appearance for the reds. Red trebles 1947 - Centre-forward Albert Stubbins scored all our goals as we won 3-1 at Charlton Athletic. He also broke the cross-bar with a shot! 1914 - Centre-forward Tom Miller bagged a hat-trick as we beat Örgryte IS 4-1 in a friendly in Gothenburg, with Terris also on target. The pitch was actually a converted skating pond! Sam’s farewell 1907 - Sam Raybould left Anfield to join Sunderland. He was the first player to score a hundred League goals for the reds, a feat he achieved in 162 matches. He was top scorer with seventeen when we won the title for the first time in 1901 and struck a total of 130 goals in 226 reds games, having helped us to two League titles and the Second Division championship. He had signed from New Brighton Tower for £250 in January 1900. Up against Forest 1966 - We drew 1-1 at the City Ground with Gordon Milne on the scoresheet and Ian Storey-Moore scoring one of his five goals past us. 1989 - We also faced Forest in a top-flight meeting with John Aldridge nabbing the only goal of the game from the penalty spot late on at Anfield, three days after we had beaten them in the FA Cup Semi-final. International goalscorers 1967 - Tommy Smith bagged his second and final goal for England Under-23’s, converting a penalty as he skippered them to a 3-0 win over Austria in Hull. Clubmate Chris Lawler won his fourth and final cap at this level in the same game. 1994 - Future red John Scales netted for England B as they beat their Northern Ireland counterparts 4-2 at Hillsborough. Treble joy 1924 – We claimed the Lancashire Senior Cup for the third time, beating Manchester City 2-0 in a replay of the Final at Anfield, thanks to a Danny Shone brace. Liddell for FIFA 1947 - Billy Liddell appeared for a Great Britain side that beat a Rest of Europe team in an unofficial international at Hampden Park. The game was to commemorate the UK’s re-entry into FIFA. Thumping the Yanks 1964 - We trounced a New York All Stars side 7-1 on our US tour. Alf Arrowsmith and Ian St. John both netted twice with Phil Chisnall, Tommy Smith and Willie Stevenson all also on the scoresheet. Beating the Mancs 1919 – We beat Manchester United 4-0 at Anfield in a game played in aid of the National Footballers’ War Fund. Tom Miller bagged a brace, with John Bamber and Harry Chambers also on target. Released 2006 - Stéphane Henchoz and David Thompson were both released by Wigan Athletic. They had appeared 32 and ten times respectively for the Latics. Youngsters in action 2018 – Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Bobby Duncan both featured for England Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat to Switzerland in a European Championships Finals group game in Rotherham, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2015 – Trent Alexander-Arnold and Herbie Kane played for England Under-17’s in their 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in a European Championships Finals group game in Bulgaria. Meanwhile, keeper Caoimhín Kelleher played as the Irish lost 2-0 to Italy in the same competition. 2008 – Future red Thiago Alcântara played for Spain Under-17’s as they beat Republic of Ireland 3-1 in a European Championships group game in Turkey. 2007 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses scored the only goal as England Under-17’s beat France to reach the European Championships Final in Belgium. 2006 – Ragnar Klavan won his first cap as a Heracles Almelo player as Estonia Under-21’s lost 2-0 to Wales in a European Championships qualifier in Tallinn, with reds youngster Ramon Calliste on the winning side. 2002 - Young red Mark Smyth played as England Under-17’s beat Spain 4-1 in the European Championships third place play-off in Denmark. Meanwhile, future reds Arnaud Buhler and Carl Medjani faced each other in the Final with the game ending goalless before Switzerland beat France on penalties. 2000 – Future red Milan Baroš featured for the Czech Republic Under-18’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Italy. Nearly there 1977 – We were held to a goalless draw at Coventry City as Tommy Smith played his 600th game for the club. This result put our League title celebrations on hold for four more days. Other reds internationals 1930 – Future red Ernie Blenkinsop played for England in their 2-2 friendly draw with Germany in Berlin. 1934 – Future red Tom Cooper captained England as they lost a friendly 2-1 in Hungary. 1969 – Future red John Toshack featured as Wales drew 0-0 with Northern Ireland in the British International Championships in Belfast. 1971 – Steve Heighway played for the Republic of Ireland in their 2-1 defeat by Italy at Lansdowne Road. 1986 – Future red Dean Saunders and ex-red Joey Jones both represented Wales as they lost 2-0 to Canada in Toronto. 1988 – Jan Mølby faced future red István Kozma as Hungary and Denmark drew a friendly 2-2 in Budapest. 2017 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s in their 3-0 defeat of the Netherlands in a European Championships Finals group game in Croatia. -
Wembley glory at last 1965 – This day finally brought the FA Cup to Anfield for the first time in our history. The game against Leeds United was goalless after ninety minutes, with full-back Gerry Byrne playing most of the match with a broken collar-bone. Roger Hunt opened the scoring in extra time, before Billy Bremner equalised for the Yorkshire side with one of his five goals past us. With five minutes remaining, “up popped the head of Ian St. John” to win the cup. Winger Peter Thompson reached a century of reds outings in this game. 1971 – Peter Thompson played his 400th game for the club as we beat Southampton 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to an Emlyn Hughes goal as we finished the League season in fourth, ahead of the FA Cup Final. 1980 - We played in the only FA Cup Semi-final to go to a third replay, which we unfortunately lost to Arsenal courtesy of a Brian Talbot goal at Highfield Road, one of his six strikes against the reds, who went on to l1999ose the Final to Second Division West Ham United. 1996 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless Premiership draw at Highbury. This was the first time since three substitutes were permitted for League games four years previously that we did not name a keeper on the bench, with Mark Kennedy, Ian Rush and Michael Thomas getting the nod. Luis and Mo the best 2014 - Luis Suárez was named as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for a season in which he struck 31 times in total in 37 reds outings as we came close to claiming the League title. 2018 - Mohamed Salah won the same award, towards the end of a season in which he notched 44 times in 52 games, helping us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. On our way to Athens 2007 - Jamie Carragher played his ninetieth European game in our Champions League Semi-final second leg with Chelsea at Anfield, breaking Ian Callaghan’s club record. Daniel Agger converted a cleverly-worked free-kick to take the tie into extra time, following our single goal defeat in the first meeting. Dirk Kuyt had an effort ruled out for offside, and also hit the woodwork before Pepe Reina was the hero in a penalty shoot-out that we won 4-1, saving from both Geremi and Arjen Robben. Kuyt struck our decisive fourth spot-kick. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition in three consecutive seasons, as well as being the third round in a row in which Bolo Zenden had come up against a former employer, following ties with Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven. Striking legends in and out 1990 - Kenny Dalglish made his 515th and final appearance in our 1-0 home defeat of Derby County, thanks to a goal from Gary Gillespie, as we were awarded our eighteenth, and most recent, League title. He was aged 39 years 58 days, a post-war club record. This game had been postponed from February. 1972 - We also faced the Rams, losing a First Division fixture 1-0 at the Baseball Ground thanks to a goal from John McGovern. 1958 – Outside-right Fred Morris joined from Mansfield Town for a £7,000 fee. He bagged fourteen goals in 48 reds games, moving on to Crewe Alexandra for £4,000 in June 1960. 1914 – Defender Ernest Peake moved on to Third Lanark. He joined the reds as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games. 1899 – Forward Peter Kyle arrived from Clyde for £100, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse in May 1900. On the same day, Scottish inside-right Andrew McCowie moved on to Woolwich Arsenal after netting eleven times in 35 games since signing from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896. Other arrivals 1973 - Jimmy Case signed from South Liverpool for £500. He went on to net 46 times in 269 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1902 – Keeper Peter Platt arrived from Blackburn Rovers, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. 1897 – Right-winger Bobby Marshall signed from Leith Athletic. He scored twice in 21 reds games, moving on to Portsmouth in 1899. Crashing out? 2019 – We lost 3-0 at Barcelona in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final to leave our chances of reaching the Final in Madrid hanging by a thread, despite a decent performance. Ex-red Luis Suárez opened the scoring before Lionel Messi added a late brace. Gary Mac yet again 2001 - Gary McAllister scored for the fifth straight game in our 2-0 win at Bradford City as we headed towards the Champions League. Michael Owen nabbed the other goal in a game that was originally postponed the previous December. Also recently 2017 – Emre Can struck a spectacular goal, the only one of our trip to Watford. 2016 - We lost 3-1 at Swansea City, with left-back Brad Smith seeing red. André Ayew struck twice for the home side, with Jack Cork also on target, as Christian Benteke scored for the reds. 2012 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio played his 134th and last reds game as Fulham won for the first time at Anfield, so completing their first ever League double over us. A presentation was made to Brian Hall before the game, marking his retirement as Public Relations Manager, a post he had held since 1991. Martin Škrtel put through his own net as ex-reds reserve Alex Kačaniklić attempted to convert John Arne Riise’s cross for the only goal. 2011 - We beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield. Maxi Rodríguez opened the scoring before Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty and Luis Suárez struck, with ex-Toon star Andy Carroll making a late cameo from the bench. Replay 86 2006 - The Replay 86 game was played at Anfield in front of 32,947 in aid of the Marina Dalglish Appeal. The two sides were representing the 1986 FA Cup Final teams, and the only goal came in the final minute, through former reds reserves striker John Durnin. Also against the Blues 1937 - Jack Balmer was on target as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea at Anfield in the final game of a League campaign that saw us finish in a disappointing eighteenth, just three points clear of relegation. Dickie Spence netted one of his six goals against the reds. On the same day, Bill Shankly was on the losing side at Wembley, as Preston North End lost 3-1 to Sunderland in the first FA Cup Final to be played in the month of May. Goals galore 1978 - King Kenny grabbed a hat-trick in our 4-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield, with Phil Neal adding a penalty. 1926 - Forward Tommy Reid scored both goals on his reds debut in our 2-2 home draw with Sheffield United, with outside-right Cyril Oxley playing his 34th and final reds game as we finished the season in sixth place. Harry Johnson scored two of his seven goals past us. 1999 - Less happily, Jamie Carragher scored an own goal as we came from 2-0 behind at half time to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Anfield in the League, having already scored an own goal in the reverse fixture that season! Paul Ince struck with Steve McManaman netting his 66th and final reds goal after Jamie Redknapp’s spot-kick. Spurs’ Mauricio Taricco was sent off just before the break while Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Bjørn Tore Kvarme both played their final reds games, with the young Steven Gerrard instrumental in our comeback after coming off the bench at half time. Steffen Iversen had netted the other goal for the visitors. 1943 - Cyril Done struck for the fourth consecutive game, grabbing a brace as we beat Bolton Wanderers 4-0 in our Lancashire Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield, with Thomas Pearson and Jackie Campbell also on target. This game also counted towards the Wartime League. 1979 - We also faced the Trotters in a game originally postponed from three months earlier, when Ray Kennedy netted twice and David Johnson and Kenny Dalglish were also on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win in wintry conditions at Burnden Park, with the home side’s score coming from a Graeme Souness own goal. Bolton keeper Jim McDonagh said afterwards, “Liverpool are perfection. This team would have been good enough to win the 1978 World Cup!” Eleven in a row 1982 - We won 2-0 at home to Nottingham Forest, our eleventh successive League win - a joint club record with 2013/14, and tenth straight win in all competitions, a then club record. Craig Johnston bagged both goals. Bob off the mark 1948 – Left-half Bob Paisley struck the first of his twelve reds goals as ended the season in tenth by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield, with Jack Balmer also on target. Another trophy 1946 - We beat Everton 3-1 at Anfield to claim the Liverpool Senior Cup. Bill Jones and Harry Eastham netted for the reds, with the Blues’ Purvis putting through his own net. Jameo off 1993 - David James was dismissed at Norwich City on the hour mark with David Phillips netting the only goal of the game past Mike Hooper from the subsequent spot-kick, as he became the first substitute keeper to take the field for the reds in the Premier League, in his 73rd and final senior reds appearance. This was a vital result as we finished in sixth, three places and three points behind City who reached the UEFA Cup, which we failed to do. English reds 1964 - Roger Hunt scored in England’s 3-0 victory over ‘Young England’. 1996 - Michael Owen netted a brace for the Under-16’s as they beat Turkey 2-1 in a European Championships group game in Austria. 2002 – David Mannix and David Raven both played for England Under-17’s in their goalless draw with host nation Denmark in a European Championships Finals group game. 2012 – Ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of the senior England side. 2016 – Curtis Jones struck as England Under-15’s lost 7-5 to Croatia, with clubmates Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Bobby Duncan also featuring. 2022 – Carter Pinnington featured for England Under-15’s as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Romania. An English treble 1935 - Sam English scored a hat-trick as we beat Exeter City 3-1 in a testimonial match for former reds full-back Jimmy Gray at St. James Park. Scottish-born South African international Gray had only ever played one senior reds game, but turned out 221 times for the Grecians, helping them to finish runners up in the Third Division South in 1933. First and last caps 1985 - Michael Robinson won his first cap as a Queens Park Rangers player, and nineteenth in all, as Norway held the Republic of Ireland to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in Dublin. His former clubmates Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson and Ronnie Whelan all also featured. Ex-red Avi Cohen and future reds John Barnes and Mark Wright all also won international caps that day. 1991 - Poland’s European Championships qualifying visit to Lansdowne Road also ended goalless. This was the twentieth meeting between the countries, with John Aldridge winning his final cap as a Real Sociedad player, and 39th in total. Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton and ex-reds reserve Kevin Sheedy also played. John Barnes, Steve Nicol, ex-red Jim Magilton and future reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Istvan Kozma, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Gary McAllister, Colin Pascoe, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Dean Saunders all also represented their countries on the same day. Other games on this day 1957 – Tony Rowley and Billy Liddell netted as we beat Bristol City 2-1 in a Second Division encounter in L4, to finish the season in third place, just missing out on promotion again. 1920 – Harry Chambers nabbed the only goal of our visit to Sunderland as our season ended with a fifth-place finish, just behind the hosts. Also in and out 2024 – Centre-half Carter Pinnington signed pro terms with the reds. On the same day, it was announced that goalkeeping coach John Achterberg would be leaving the club at the end of the season, having been with the club since June 2009. St. Michael the Dad 2003 - Michael Owen became a father when his future bride Louise Bonsall gave birth to their daughter, Gemma Rose. Other internationals 1975 – John Toshack played for Wales as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-1 in Luxembourg. 1993 – Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland as they beat Italy 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Bern. 1994 – Future red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon as they drew a friendly 2-2 in South Korea. -
European semi-finals We have played three European Semi-finals on this day. 1985 - Mark Lawrenson grabbed the only goal of the game in Greece to knock Panathinaikos out 5-0 on aggregate, as we reached our fifth European Cup Final in nine years. 1997 - Our 2-0 defeat of Paris Saint-Germain in the European Cup Winners’ Cup at Anfield was not enough to overcome a three goal first-leg deficit. Robbie Fowler and Mark Wright netted our goals. Robbie Fowler scored his seventh in the competition, a club record with Mark Wright bagging his first goal in his 200th LFC game. 2018 – Mohamed Salah scored in his seventh consecutive reds game, netting twice past future reds keeper Alisson Becker before the break as we beat his former club Roma 5-2 in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final. Sadio Mané also scored before Roberto Firmino added a brace to reach fifty goals for the reds. However, the visitors pulled two late goals back through one of Edin Džeko’s five goals past us to date and a Diego Perotti spot-kick. Sadly, the night was spoiled by an injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that kept him out of action for a full year. Divock again 2022 – We beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield with Andy Robertson heading in the opener after an hour. Divock Origi nodded in his eleventh Premier League goal from off the bench, a club record. This was his 41st and final strike for the club, six of which had come against the Blues. 2024 – We lost 2-0 at Goodison Park thanks to Jarrad Branthwaite’s first-half goal and a Dominic Calvert-Lewin header after the break Going down 1954 – Bill Jones played his 277th and final reds game in our 3-0 defeat at Blackpool to confirm relegation to the Second Division, with inside-right Sammy Smyth appearing for the 44th and last time. Stan Mortensen bagged a brace, the last of his eleven goals against us, with Allan Brown also scoring. Billy Liddell played his 300th League game for the reds. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We have twice visited Manchester United for top-flight fixtures on this day in history. 2004 - Danny Murphy scored the only goal for the third time in four League meetings at Old Trafford, this time from the penalty spot after Gary Neville brought down Steven Gerrard. This was Stéphane Henchoz’s 200th reds game, John Arne Riise’s hundredth League game for us, and Bruno Cheyrou’s 48th and final reds appearance, after he came off the bench to replace Harry Kewell. 1965 - Unfortunately, we lost 3-0 as United went on to claim the title. Denis Law bagged the first two of his six goals past us with United also having two strikes ruled out, hitting the post twice and having two shots cleared off the line. John Connelly netted the other goal for the home side. Rafa honoured 2006 - Rafael Benítez was named Coach of the Year for 2005 by la Comunidad de Madrid at the annual Seven Stars of Sport Awards ceremony. This was in recognition of leading us to stunning Champions League success in Istanbul in his first season in charge at Anfield. Banned 2013 - Luis Suárez was banned by the FA for ten matches after being found guilty of biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanović at Anfield two days earlier. Gary Mac the boss 2002 - Gary McAllister was named Coventry City’s new player-manager, although he would remain at Anfield until the end of the season. He remained in the post until he had to step down due to his wife’s illness in January 2004. Happy birthday 1976 - Steve Finnan was born in Limerick. He made 217 appearances after signing from Fulham for £3.5m in July 2003, notching once. He helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield before joining R.C.D. Espanyol in September 2008. A rare defeat 1974 - We lost 1-0 at home to Arsenal with future red Ray Kennedy on target, one of just eleven League defeats at Anfield during the whole of the 1970’s, with the Gunners inflicting three of these. This game was in fact our hundredth meeting in the League. Red endings 1915 - Billy Banks played his 26th and final reds game as we won 2-0 at Oldham Athletic in a top-flight match, with forward Jimmy Nicholl appearing for the 59th and last time as Fred Pagnam bagged a brace. This was future reds boss David Ashworth’s final game in charge of the home side, with Tom Watson managing the reds for the last time, while the result ensured that Everton were crowned champions, rather than the Latics. 1937 – Centre-forward Fred Howe struck his 36th and final goal for the club as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Huddersfield Town. He signed from Bootle Athletic for £1,000, but only played two senior games before moving on to Leyton Orient in November 1951. 1969 – Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop died in Sheffield. He played 71 reds games without scoring, having won 26 England caps by the time he arrived from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500 in March 1934. He moved on to Cardiff City in November 1937. 1999 – Sean Dundee featured for the reds for the fifth and last time as we won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Steve McManaman, Jamie Redknapp and Øyvind Leonhardsen all on target in the first half before Damien Duff pulled a goal back after an hour. 1894 – We lost 3-1 at home to Rovers in a Palatine League game, with the reds fielding a reserves side containing just nine players! In and out 1895 – Scottish centre-half Robert Neill signed on loan from Hibernian, arriving permanently in May 1896. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. 2009 – Reserves centre-half Jack Hobbs joined Leicester City for £400,000 after spending the whole of the season on loan at the Walkers Stadium. He had made just five senior reds appearances. All-star SteG 2005 - Steven Gerrard was named in the PFA Team of the Year for the second season running, the only reds player to be so honoured. He was eventually named in the team eight times, a record in the Premier League era. International beginning 1977 - Future red Mark Lawrenson made his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland as they were held to a goalless draw in Dublin by Poland. He went on to amass a total of 39 caps. 2008 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-19’s as they lost 2-1 to Estonia in Tallinn. 2019 – Curtis Jones scored, with Bobby Duncan also playing, as England Under-18’s beat Mexico 3-2 in a friendly in Dubai. Disappointment against the Trotters 1893 - We drew 1-1 with Bolton Wanderers in a friendly at Anfield with Hugh McQueen notching our goal. 1943 - We thumped Wanderers 6-3 in a Wartime League match at Burnden Park that also counted for the Lancashire Cup. Cyril Done and Don Welsh both bagged braces, with George Kaye and Michael Hulligan also on the scoresheet. Twice at The Dell 1979 - We visited Southampton with David Johnson heading us into the lead as we returned with a point from a game originally postponed from Christmas. 1982 - Ian Rush added to a brace from Ronnie Whelan as we won 3-2, with Joe Fagan taking charge of the reds in the absence of Bob Paisley through illness. Meanwhile, Christian Poulsen played for Denmark Under-21’s as they lost 2-0 to Slovenia in a friendly in Farum, while fellow future red Fernando Torres struck twice as Spain Under-21’s thumped Belgium 5-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Durham. Harry for the League 1897 - Forward Harry Bradshaw played for the Football League as they lost 3-0 to a Scottish League side. Other reds games 2021 – Mohamed Salah gave us an early lead over Newcastle United behind closed doors at Anfield, but Joe Willock scored a stoppage-time equaliser after the Geordies had had a last-minute leveller already ruled out. 1962 – We were held to a goalless draw in a Second Division fixture at Stoke City. 1926 – We drew 2-2 at Cardiff City with Harry Chambers nabbing a brace. 1920 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion. Nando at the treble 2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick to pass twenty goals for the season after we had fallen behind against Middlesbrough at Anfield. We went on to win 3-2, with Jérémie Aliadière sent off for the visitors for slapping Javier Mascherano. This meant we became the first team ever to score hat-tricks in all of the League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League in the same season. Tuncay Şanlı and future red Stewart Downing netted for the visitors. Daniel again 2014 - Daniel Sturridge scored in his seventh consecutive League game as we eventually beat Swansea City 4-3 at Anfield. He put us in front inside three minutes, with Jordan Henderson extending our lead before ex-red Jonjo Shelvey scored a spectacular goal and Martin Škrtel put through his own net to level the scores. Sturridge headed in his second before Wilfred Bony equalised from the spot. Henderson then grabbed the winner. Sami the centurion twice 2002 - Nicolas Anelka netted after Thomas Radzinski had opened the scoring in the Anfield derby, while Sami Hyypiä played in his hundredth League match for us. This was the first League derby in a quarter of century to feature two English goalies, as Chris Kirkland and Steve Simonsen played. Kirkland thus became the first reds keeper to play his first three games for the club in three different competitions, following appearances in the League Cup and Champions League. Abel Xavier appeared for the reds, becoming the first player ever to play for both sides in the derby during the same season. 2003 - Sami Hyypiä played his 200th reds game as we lost 2-1 at Birmingham City, with Michael Owen bagging our consolation. Trouncing the Whites 2022 – We thumped Leeds United 6-0 at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah converting two penalties and Joël Matip also on target in the first half hour. Sadio Mané added two late goals before Virgil van Dijk headed in during stoppage time. Happy birthdays 1955 – Former Chief Executive Rick Parry was born. The qualified Chartered Accountant had previously been involved with Manchester’s bid for the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games and advised the Birmingham Olympic Games Council on financial matters, joining the reds from the Premier League in July 1998. He played a pivotal role in the takeover of the club by Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. in March 2007, before leaving the club in the summer of 2009. 1968 - Former Masseur Stuart Welsh was born in Liverpool. Previously with Wigan Athletic, he helped out with the first team and reserves before his move to Anfield came about during the summer of 2002. 1899 - Forward Bill Salisbury was born in Glasgow. He signed from Partick Thistle in October 1928, bagging three goals in seventeen games before joining Bangor City the following August. Red against blue at Wembley 1983 - Ian Rush netted in his fifth consecutive international, with Phil Neal converting a penalty as England beat Wales 2-1 in the British International Championships at Wembley. It was Zico’s fifth and final international goal. Sammy Lee and ex-red Joey Jones also played. This is the most recent occasion when a red has scored against an Everton goalkeeper in a full international, as Neville Southall was in the Welsh goal. Farewell to two legendary forwards 1927 - Dick Forshaw played his 288th and final reds game as we held Leeds United to a goalless draw at Elland Road, while Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers was playing his 300th game for us. 1952 - Jack Balmer made his 309th and last reds appearance as we lost 2-0 at Burnley in the FA Cup Fifth Round, with centre-half Joe Cadden playing his fifth and last reds game and forward Cyril Done turning out for the 110th and last time. Billy Morris and ex-red Les Shannon scored the goals. 1918 - We also visited Turf Moor, winning a Wartime League match 3-1 thanks to goals from Walter Wadsworth, George Schofield and Thomas Green. Top of the table controversy 1980 - David Fairclough put the reds ahead at Anfield against Ipswich Town early on, but Eric Gates equalised against the run of play six minutes from time with one of his five goals past us. That was when the drama really started as Terry Butcher then fouled Kenny Dalglish in the box, with referee Bert Newsome immediately pointing to the spot. The visiting players were incensed, and as Terry McDermott ran up to take the spot-kick Frans Thijssen hurled a dollop of mud across his path. Town keeper Paul Cooper got down well to smother the shot and the Kop was outraged when the ref failed to order a retake. First and last caps 1901 – Ex-reds half-back Barney Battles made his debut for Scotland as they trounced Northern Ireland 11-0 in a British International Championships game at his home ground, Celtic Park. 2017 – Liam Millar won his third and last cap for Canada Under-20’s as they beat Antigua & Barbuda 2-0 in a CONCACAF Championships group game in Costa Rica. Also on target in the British International Championships 1982 - Ex-red Kevin Keegan struck his 21st and final international goal in England’s 4-0 thumping of Northern Ireland at Wembley, while winning his sixtieth cap. Fellow ex-red Ray Clemence also played. 1907 - George Latham played as Wales beat Ireland 3-2 in Belfast. Richard Morris won his tenth cap, his only one as a Grimsby Town player, and netted his only international goal. In and out 1962 – Keeper Jim Furnell arrived from Burnley for £18,000, helping us to secure the Second Division title that season. He moved on to Arsenal in November 1963 after 28 first-team outings. 2015 – French midfielder Alou Diarra signed for Charlton Athletic, netting once in 45 games for the Addicks before moving to AS Nancy-Lorraine in September 2016. 2016 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart signed a new contract. He made twenty senior appearances for the reds since arriving in July 2014 after his contract with Tottenham Hotspur expired, moving on to Hull City after three years in L4. 2018 – Ex-reds centre-half Gabriel Paletta signed for Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning, netting once in 46 outings. On the same day, midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner signed as a professional for the reds, making three senior appearances before being released in the summer of 2022. 2021 – Under-23’s Assistant Coach Gary O’Neil left the reds to take over as Senior First Team Coach for Bournemouth, joining up again with ex-reds scout Jonathan Woodgate. Derby despair 1998 - David James played his 213th consecutive reds game in a 1-1 derby draw at Anfield, before finally making way for Brad Friedel. Paul Ince nabbed our equaliser after Duncan Ferguson had struck one of his five goals past us, while Robbie Fowler suffered a serious knee injury in a clash with keeper Thomas Myhre. This was our eighth consecutive derby without victory. After Kenny 1991 - We played our first game since Kenny Dalglish resigned, losing 3-1 at Luton Town. Jan Mølby netted our goal from the spot, the club’s 6,000th League goal to date, as Ronnie Moran took temporary charge for the first time. This was our last game on their controversial plastic pitch, as it was replaced with grass in time for the following season. Stéphane Henchoz was sent off for the first time in his career, for dissent, as Switzerland lost 1-0 to the United Arab Emirates in a tournament in Oman. Ex-reds reserves midfielder Jim Magilton won his fortieth cap for Northern Ireland, and first as an Ipswich Town player, as they won 3-1 in Luxembourg. Meanwhile, Emile Heskey won his fifth cap, and last as a Leicester City player, as Kevin Keegan’s England played out a goalless draw with Argentina at Wembley. Future red John Arne Riise bagged his first Norway goal in their 2-0 win in Turkey, playing alongside Vegard Heggem. Future red Robbie Keane netted his final goal while with Coventry City as Phil Babb, Steve Staunton and ex-reds Mark Kennedy and Jason McAteer also faced Patrik Berger and Vladimír Šmicer as the Republic of Ireland beat the Czech Republic 3-2 in Dublin, their first win over the Czechs in four attempts. Future reds Jerzy Dudek, Paul Jones, Harry Kewell and Alex Manninger also played for their countries that day. 2024 – Future red Rio Ngumoha netted as England Under-16’s thumped Sweden 4-0 in a friendly in Spain. North-eastern encounters We have twice faced both Newcastle United and Sunderland on this day in history, drawing three times and winning the other game. 1946 - The only one of these fixtures to be played at Anfield was a 2-2 draw with Sunderland in a Wartime League match, when Billy Liddell and Jack Balmer struck our goals. 1901 - We won at Roker Park with Jack Cox netting the only goal of the game. This was our first victory on Wearside, after five previous top-flight defeats there. 1929 - Dick Edmed was on the scoresheet as we drew 2-2 with Newcastle, with our other strike being an Alf Maitland own goal, with Tommy Lang grabbing the first two of his four goals against the reds. Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson played his hundredth League game for us. Entertaining the Potters 1985 - Steve Nicol and Kenny Dalglish were on target in the first half-hour as we beat Stoke City 2-0 at Anfield in a top-flight match, with Kenny making his 300th League appearance for the reds. 1893 - We also entertained Stoke, when our friendly ended goalless. Other reds games 1957 – Bristol City’s visit to Anfield was abandoned with the score 1-0 to the Robins. Philippe off the mark 2013 - Philippe Coutinho scored his first reds goal immediately after the break as we thumped Swansea City 5-0 at Anfield, after Steven Gerrard had put us in front from the spot before half-time after Luis Suárez was fouled. José Enrique struck his second and last reds goal with Suárez also scoring before Daniel Sturridge converted another penalty. Unfortunately, Fabio Borini dislocated his shoulder in this game. Matt the boss 1923 - Matt McQueen took charge of the reds for the first time as forward Dick Forshaw netted a hat-trick in a 3-0 home League win over Blackburn Rovers, with his first being his fiftieth reds goal. Centre-half David Pratt made the first of his 85 reds appearances in this game. A team of all nations 2024 – We won 4-1 at Brentford in what was the first League game we had played with players from eleven different nationalities starting the game. Darwin Núñez opened the scoring before the break, with Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo all on target in the second half. Ivan Toney netted for the home side. In comes Djimi 1999 - Djimi Traoré signed from Stade Lavallois Mayenne for £550,000. He made a total of 141 reds appearances, netting once before joining Charlton Athletic for £2m in August 2006, having helped us to claim the Champions League the year before. Tom’s bow 1912 - Inside-forward Tom Miller debuted in a 1-1 draw at home to The Wednesday, when Bobby Robinson scored his 64th and final reds goal and Sam Kirkman struck one of his four goals against the reds. 1906 - We also entertained the Owls, with Jack Cox bagging a brace in a 2-1 win, with his first goal being adjudged to have just crossed the line. Jimmy Stewart netted one of his five goals past us. FA Cup memories We have played six FA Cup ties on this day over the years, three of which have ended goalless. 1990 - On a more positive note, we beat Southampton 3-0 at Anfield in the Fifth Round, with the goals coming from Ian Rush, Peter Beardsley and Steve Nicol. Kenny’s Euro bow 2011 – Kenny Dalglish took charge of his first reds game in Europe as we held Sparta Praha to a goalless draw in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie in Prague. Macca for England 1988 - Steve McMahon won the first of his seventeen full international caps in England’s goalless friendly draw with Israel in Tel-Aviv as Peter Beardsley skippered his country for the only time. John Barnes and future red Mark Wright, who was winning his first cap since his move to Derby County, both also played. Ex-red Avi Cohen won his 51st and final official cap in this game. On the same day, Steve Nicol and future reds coach Steve Clarke played in Scotland’s 2-2 friendly draw in Saudi Arabia. 1993 - John Barnes represented his country again as England thumped San Marino 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley, while future red Gary McAllister played in Scotland’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Malta at Ibrox. 2016 - Bobby Duncan, Paul Glatzel and Curtis Jones all featured as England Under-15’s drew 1-1 with USA Under-16’s at St. George’s Park. 2017 – Duncan and Jones both played for England Under-16’s in their 5-1 mauling by Spain in Leek, with Elijah Dixon-Bonner captaining the side. Frank born 1927 – Defender Frank Christie was born in Scone, Perthshire. He signed from Forfar Athletic in March 1949, and only played four times before returning north of the border to join East Fife in January 1951. 1912 – Left-half Jimmy McInnes was born in Ayr. He signed from Third Lanark for £5,500 in March 1938, netting once in 48 outings. He joined the administrative staff after retiring from playing in 1946, taking over as Club Secretary in 1955. He stayed in this role until May 1965, when he sadly hanged himself above the Archway Stile, the old turnstile between the Kop and Kemlyn Road stands, just four days after we had claimed the FA Cup for the first time. Quasi back to Manchester 1998 - Peter Beardsley joined Manchester City on loan from Bolton Wanderers. He played six times in a month at Maine Road, without getting on the scoresheet. He played thirteen times while with the Blues, before moving on permanently to Sc***horpe United. 2000 - Ex-reds reserves forward John Durnin joined Carlisle United from Portsmouth on a free transfer. He struck twice in 22 League games for the Cumbrian outfit. Into the final 1983 - Despite losing 1-0 on the night at Burnley, we still progressed to our third straight League Cup Final, 3-1 on aggregate. The Swiss right-back made just thirteen appearances for the first team as his time at Anfield was blighted by injury following his free transfer from Borussia Dortmund in July 2008. His contract was cancelled by mutual consent in August 2011 after he had spent the previous campaign on loan at VfB Stuttgart. 1986 - Former centre-back Gabriel Paletta was born in Buenos Aires. He signed from Club Atlético Banfield for £2m in July 2006, but only featured eight times for the first team before returning to his native land to join Boca Juniors in August 2007. A change at the top 1928 - Matt McQueen resigned as Manager after five years in charge. He had previously played for the reds in every position on the park, as well serving as a Director. He led us to our fourth League title in his first season. Harry Race scored on his reds debut on the same day, in a 3-2 League win at Derby County, to add to a brace from Dick Edmed. Jimmy Gill struck the last of his six goals against the reds, with Harry Bedford bagging one of his nine past us. Joe’s treble 1908 - Joe Hewitt scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 home League win over Woolwich Arsenal, with Jim Bradley also on the scoresheet, while outside-left Michael Griffin played his first reds game. Tim Coleman netted one of his nine goals past us. 1964 - We also beat the Gunners, with Ian St. John heading the only goal of our FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Highbury after fifteen minutes, as Roger Hunt had a last-minute penalty saved by ex-red Jim Furnell. Ron Yeats and Gunners striker Joe Baker were both dismissed in the first half following a mêlée brought on by a Baker tackle on Yeats, with the reds skipper vehemently protesting his innocence afterwards. Unfortunately, Swansea Town knocked us out at Anfield at the next hurdle. Walsh walks 1987 - Paul Walsh was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000. He had struck 37 times in 112 reds games after arriving from Luton Town for £700,000 in May 1984, winning a League title and the Screen Sport Super Cup during his time at Anfield. Jan to the rescue 1986 - Jan Mølby’s penalty saved us from an embarrassing defeat, handing us a 1-1 draw at York City in the FA Cup Fifth Round. We won the replay and of course went on to claim the double that season. We had also drawn with York by the same score at the same stage the previous season. Reds bows 1913 - Forward Harry Welfare played the first of his four reds games in our 2-1 top-flight win over The Wednesday at Anfield. Arthur Metcalf and Tom Miller both netted, with David McLean scoring one of his eight goals against us while right-back Ephraim Longworth reached a century of reds outings. 1912 - Inside-forward Tom Miller signed from Hamilton Academical for £400. He played alongside his brother John in his final few seasons at Anfield, netting 56 goals in 146 reds games. Stevie G against the world’s best 2005 - Steven Gerrard played alongside ex-red Jari Litmanen for Andriy Shevchenko’s European XI in a charity match in aid of the Asian tsunami relief fund at Barcelona’s Camp Nou. Ronaldinho’s World XI, including ex-red Rigobert Song, won 6-3. Gerrard played the first half in midfield, and the second period at centre-half! St. Andrews disappointment We twice lost First Division fixtures at Birmingham City on this day in the 1930’s, without finding the target. 1930 - We lost 1-0. 1936 – We were beaten 2-0, when South African forward Lance Carr played his 33rd and final reds game. Harvey off the mark 2018 – Future red Harvey Elliott scored on his debut for England Under-15’s in their 2-0 defeat of Belgium at St. George’s Park. Match abandoned 1995 - England’s friendly against the Republic of Ireland at Lansdowne Road was abandoned after 27 minutes, due to crowd trouble. Ex-reds Peter Beardsley and Steve Staunton played, while future red Paul Ince won his last cap as a Manchester United player. Notts encounters 1969 – Nottingham Forest won 2-0 at a snowy Anfield, with Barry Lyons bagging a brace as centre-half Ron Yeats played his 300th League game for the reds. 1902 – We lost 1-0 at home to Notts County. The best 2021 – Left-back Kostas Tsimikas was named PSAP Greek Player of the Year for 2019/20. On the move 1946 – Outside-right Billy Watkinson signed from Prescot Cables. He struck twice in 24 reds games before moving on to Accrington Stanley in January 1951. 2005 - Former reserves forward Mark Peers signed for Conference outfit Leigh RMI, having previously been with Raith Rovers after leaving Anfield. 2007 - Another former second-string striker, Conal Platt, joined Weymouth on loan from Bournemouth, signing on permanently five months later. 2011 – Ex-reds centre-half Jack Hobbs joined Hull City on loan from Leicester City, playing thirteen times before signing on permanently four months later. 2016 – Centre-half Joël Matip agreed to sign from Schalke 04 on a free transfer on the following 1st July. 2019 – Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza joined Fluminense on loan, playing 34 times while back in Brazil. Also in international action 1998 – Future red Titi Camara captained Guinea in their 1-0 defeat by host nation Burkina Faso in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals. Meanwhile, Metz’s Rigobert Song played as Cameroon beat Algeria 1-1 in the same group. Farewell to a legend 1978 - Ian Callaghan made his 640th and final League appearance, almost eighteen years after his debut. Unfortunately, this came in a 1-0 reverse at Coventry City. His final ever reds appearance came eight weeks later, in our European Cup Semi-final first leg at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Tons up 2023 – Mohamed Salah made his 200th League appearance for the reds as we lost 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. We fell behind early when Hwang Hee-chan’s cross deflected off Joël Matip. Craig Dawson then netted on his debut, with Rúben Neves on target after the break. 2015 – Steven Gerrard played his 700th reds game as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay. Eiður Guðjohnsen opened the scoring from the spot after an hour, the last of his four goals against us, before Neil Danns was sent off for the Trotters. However, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho both struck late on past future reds keeper Andy Lonergan to send us through. We made it as far as Wembley Semi-final that season. 1920 – We beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0 in a top-flight match at Anfield that also counted towards the Lancashire Senior Cup, with inside-forward Harry Lewis bagging a brace. 1933 - We were held to a 3-3 draw at Burnden Park with Harold Taylor netting his first reds goal. Under-23’s Coach Neil Critchley took charge of a team captained by Curtis Jones, becoming our youngest ever skipper at the age of nineteen and five days, with the first team taking the inaugural Premier League winter break. Midfielders Jake Cain and Elijah Dixon-Bonner and forward Joe Hardy all debuted with left-back Adam Lewis and forward Liam Millar making their only senior appearances, as defenders Ki-Jana Hoever and Sepp van den Berg played their fourth and last reds games and midfielder Pedro Chirivella turned out for the eleventh and final time. God on the move 2009 - Robbie Fowler signed for North Queensland Fury, who play in the Australian A-League. He bagged nine goals in 26 outings before moving on to Perth Glory. He only made one senior reds appearance, in a 1-1 draw at Birmingham City in September 1973, when he was replaced by our goalscorer, Brian Hall. International bows 1922 - Long-serving reds left-back Donald McKinlay won the first of his two caps for Scotland in a 2-1 defeat by Wales in the British International Championships in Wrexham. Right-half Maurice Parry made his international bow for the home side in the same game, while ex-red Ken Campbell was in the Scotland goal. 1928 – Elisha Scott played for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-1 to Wales in Belfast. Africans on target 2002 - Future reds Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both scored in Senegal’s 2-0 African Cup of Nations Quarter-final defeat of DR Congo in Mali, with this being Diao’s first strike for his country. Meanwhile, ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon in their 1-0 win over Egypt. 2006 - Song and future red Kolo Touré both converted in a penalty shoot-out after Cameroon’s Quarter-final with Ivory Coast in Cairo ended in a 1-1 draw. Song skippered his country to a 12-11 victory on penalties. 2008 - Rigobert was captain again as they beat Tunisia 3-2 after extra time to reach the Semi-finals once more. 2012 – Future red Touré played in the Ivory Coast’s 3-0 defeat of host nation Equatorial Guinea in a Quarter-final in Malabo. 2015 – Touré featured again as Ivory Coast beat Congo DR 3-1 in the Semi-final in Equatorial Guinea. Almost in charge 2008 - Steve Staunton was appointed Assistant Manager of Leeds United under Gary McAllister. He remained at Elland Road for ten months, leaving in the wake of Gary Mac’s sacking. 2010 – Ex-reds coach Paco Herrera was appointed Manager of Villarreal reserves, but only stayed in the role for four months. Final caps 2000 - Reserves forward Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his third and final cap as a reds player, as a substitute in a 3-2 Nordic Cup defeat of the Faroe Islands in La Manga. 1992 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his last cap as a Molde player, his eleventh in total, as Norway beat Bermuda 3-1 in a friendly in Hamilton. Fellow future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played. 1976 - Joey Jones won his fourth and final Under-23’s cap for Wales, and only one as a red, in their 3-2 defeat by Scotland in Wrexham. Future red Alan Hansen won his third and last cap at this level as a substitute in the same game. Other reds games 1956 – We won a Second Division match 2-1 at Middlesbrough despite falling behind to the last of Lindy Delapenha’s four goals against the reds. Award winners 2008 - Kenny Dalglish won the Bill Shankly Memorial award from the Liverpool Echo at the Echo Arena. 2013 - Centre-half Martin Škrtel was named Slovakia’s Player of the Year for 2012, winning this award for the fourth time. On the move 2019 - Norwich City announced that former Academy midfielder Adam Phillips' contract had been cancelled by mutual consent. He moved on to Burnley six months later. 2021 – Defender Jarell Quansah signed pro terms with the reds. He has captained the Under-18’s, making it onto the first-team bench on two occasions so far. Also in international action 2016 – Future red Rafael Camacho scored for Portugal Under-16’s as they drew a friendly 3-3 with Germany in Vila Real, before triumphing 5-4 on penalties. 2009 – Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they lost 2-1 to Uruguay in a final phase game at the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” in Venezuela. He bagged a brace for Brazil in the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” on his twentieth birthday, as they beat Peru 2-1 in a group match in Paraguay. Other births and deaths 1962 - Ray Houghton was born in Glasgow. He signed from Oxford United for £825,000 in October 1987, going on on to strike 38 times in 202 reds games, helping us to two League titles, two FA Cups and the FA Charity Shield before moving to Aston Villa for £900,000 in July 1992. 1985 - Ex-reserves forward Mark Smyth was born in Liverpool. He made his senior debut as a substitute in our Carling Cup victory at Tottenham Hotspur in December 2004 but was released in July 2005. 2018 – Keeper Tommy Lawrence died. ‘The Flying Pig’ signed professional terms in October 1957 and played 390 times for us, winning two League title medals and an FA Charity Shield as well as being a member of the 1965 FA Cup winning side. He left the club in November 1971 to join Tranmere Rovers. 2022 – Former Club Secretary and Chief Executive Peter Robinson died aged 86. He joined the club in 1865, retiring in 2000. Supersub arrives 1974 - David Fairclough signed on as a professional. He bagged 55 goals in 154 reds games, two-fifths of which were from off the bench. The bionic carrot helped us to three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two League Cups before moving on to Luzern in July 1983. 1970 – Winger Hughie McAuley turned pro. He was a regular for the reserves but did not make a senior appearance before moving to Plymouth Argyle in October 1974, He returned to the club in 1988 as a coach at the Academy. 2007 - Daniele Padelli signed on loan from Sampdoria. He made one senior appearance, as we were held to a 2-2 draw in our final League game of the season at home to Charlton Athletic in May 2007. However, he was not kept on. Reds farewells in a rout 2007 - We were beaten 6-3 at Anfield by Arsenal in our rearranged Carling Cup Fifth Round meeting, the first time we had conceded half a dozen at home since April 1930. This was our ninth meeting with the Gunners in this competition, making them our most frequent League Cup opponents. Júlio Baptista scored four goals and had a penalty saved by Jerzy Dudek. Luis García came on as a substitute and was later himself replaced, in what was to be his 121st and final reds game. Stephen Warnock played his 67th and last reds match with Lee Peltier appearing for the fourth and final time, while Robbie Fowler scored his final goal for us from open play, with Steven Gerrard and Sami Hyypiä also on target. The king back in charge 2011 – Kenny Dalglish took charge of the reds for the first time in his second spell in the hot seat. Steven Gerrard was sent off as we lost our FA Cup Third Round match 1-0 at Manchester United, thanks to a controversial early penalty, converted by Ryan Giggs, the last of his five goals past us. Ryan Babel played his 146th and final reds game and was later admonished for tweeting a photo of referee Howard Webb mocked up in a United shirt. First and last outings 2022 – Kaide Gordon equalised with his first reds goal as we beat Shrewsbury Town 4-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield. Albert Stubbins was the man for me 2003 - The funeral of Albert Stubbins took place. The great centre-forward struck 83 times in 178 reds matches after signing from Newcastle United for a British record £12,500 fee in September 1946, helping to power us to the first League championship played after the Second World War. He was also the only footballer to appear on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album, and became a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade. On the way to Wembley 1965 - We started our first victorious FA Cup campaign when we visited fellow top-flight outfit West Bromwich Albion for our 200th game in the competition. The kick-off was delayed by twenty minutes due to heavy traffic, and Roger Hunt opened the scoring shortly before the break. Ian St. John added a second after Jeff Astle had a goal chalked off for the home side. Ron Yeats gave away a penalty with thirteen minutes to go, picking the ball up in the area as he believed the referee had blown for a foul. Fortunately, Bobby Cram, athlete Steve’s uncle, stroked the kick wide. Jeff Astle finally notched for the Baggies, one of his seven goals against the reds, but we held on to win 2-1. An unwelcome European first 1968 - We suffered our first ever home defeat in Europe as Hungarian side Ferencvárosi won 1-0 in the Fairs Cup Third Round second leg in snowy conditions, to send us crashing out 2-0 on aggregate. A new record signing 1985 – Seventeen-year-old forward Wayne Harrison signed from Oldham Athletic for £250,000, then a record fee for a teenager, although he never made a senior reds appearance before having to retire due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. 2009 – Icelandic reserves midfielder Victor Pálsson signed from AGF Århus. He failed to break through to the first team, moving on to Hibernian in January 2011. 2024 – Czech keeper Vítězslav Jaroš signed a new contract, joining Sturm Graz on loan on the same day. He helped them to claim the Austrian League and Cup double. 300 up in the cup 1963 – Roger Hunt bagged our 300th FA Cup goal as he opened the scoring in our 3-0 win at Wrexham in the Third Round. Kevin Lewis and Jimmy Melia also netted. Another Welsh treble 1990 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick, which included our 7,000th goal in all competitions, as we trounced Swansea City 8-0 in an FA Cup Third Round replay at Anfield, just three days after being held to a goalless draw in the first game at Vetch Field. Alan Hansen played his 600th reds game as John Barnes added a brace with Ronnie Whelan, Peter Beardsley and Steve Nicol all also on the scoresheet. We reached the Semi-final that season before going out to Crystal Palace. Disappointment on the south coast We have twice visited Southampton on this day in history, failing to win on both occasions. 2002 - We lost 2-0 at the Friends Provident St. Mary’s Stadium, our first visit there. John Arne Riise put through his own net with James Beattie also on the scoresheet. 1926 - We were held to a goalless draw at The Dell in an FA Cup Third Round tie, winning the Anfield replay before being knocked out at Fulham at the next hurdle. This was the third consecutive season we had been paired with the Saints in the cup. Trotters again 1954 - We lost 1-0 at Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup Third Round, a week after our previous game, a 2-1 top-flight defeat to the same side at Anfield. Willie Moir struck the last of his five goals against the reds as right-half Phil Taylor played his 343rd and final reds game. On the move 2023 – Ex-loanee centre-half Steven Caulker joined Wigan Athletic on a free transfer from Fatih Karagümrük until the end of the campaign. He played nine times for the Latics. 2021 – Keeper Andy Lonergan signed for West Bromwich Albion. He had spent the 2019/20 season with the reds, failing to make a senior appearance, also not playing for the Baggies’ first team. 2020 – Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza was sold to Clube Atlético Mineiro for £3.2m, having not managed to break through at Anfield. He had arrived from Internacional for a reported £0.5m in September 2015, spending most of his time out on loan due to work permit issues. 2015 – Ex-reserves winger Adam Hammill joined Rotherham United on loan from Huddersfield Town, playing fourteen times for the Millers without scoring. He bagged nineteen goals in 68 games for the Hatters, helping them to seventh in the top flight in his one full season at Kenilworth Road, their best ever League finish. In international action 1985 – Ex-red Avi Cohen and future red Ronnie Rosenthal both featured in Israel’s 2-0 friendly defeat by Greece in Jaffa. 2010 – Ex-red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon in their 3-1 friendly win in Kenya. 2019 – Future red Takumi Minamino played for Japan as they beat Turkmenistan 3-2 in an AFC Asian Cup group game in Abu Dhabi. 2023 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they beat Sudan 2-0 in a friendly in Tunisia. 2024 – Song managed Cameroon to a 1-1 friendly draw with Zambia in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, ex-red Takumi Minamino netted as Japan thrashed Jordan 6-1 in an unofficial meeting in Qatar. Missing out 2012 - Luis Suárez was voted into sixth place in the FIFA Ballon d’Or for 2011, with ex-red Xabi Alonso coming sixteenth as Barcelona’s Lionel Messi claimed the trophy for the third consecutive year. 2017 – Ex-red Suárez was named in the FIFPRO World11. -
Club record signing 2018 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk signed from Southampton for a club record £75m. He struck 23 times in 270 reds games across his first seven seasons, helping us to keep 108 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and FA Community Shield. On the same day, Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan headed in his second and last goal for the club to secure a last-minute 2-1 victory at Burnley. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after an hour before Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson equalised late on. 2020 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. 2024 – Minamino played as Japan thrashed Thailand 5-0 in a friendly in Tokyo. RIP Gary 2012 - Gary Ablett died, aged just 46. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in November 1983, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. 1992 - Ablett played his 147th and final reds game as goals from Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders resulted in a 2-1 League defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, after Brian Deane had struck one of his eight goals against the reds. 1977 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson died. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds after signing from Aberdeen for £1,750 in May 1925, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, also writing a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 1917 – Scottish ex-reds keeper Don Sloan died in First World War action. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. Rushie’s hat-trick 1983 - Ian Rush bagged a treble as we beat Notts County 5-1 at Anfield, with his second being his fiftieth reds strike. Kenny Dalglish netted a brace as Phil Neal missed a penalty. John Fashanu struck the first of his six goals past us. 1994 - Rushie was on target as we won 2-1 at Ipswich Town, completing his record of scoring for us in each of the six New Year’s Day matches in which he played. Neil Ruddock nabbed the other goal to complete our first away League win since August. Most recently 2024 - Mohamed Salah scored his 150th League goal for the reds after a goalless first half against Newcastle United at Anfield, having had a first-half spot-kick saved. Alexander Isak levelled, but Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo netted before Sven Botman headed a goal back. However, Salah converted another penalty to complete a 4-2 victory late on to maintain our lead at the top of the table. Happy birthdays 1993 - Right-back Jon Flanagan was born in Liverpool. He struck once in 51 senior reds games since making his debut in a 3-0 home victory over Manchester City in April 2011. He debuted in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020, so far making just two senior appearances. More red trebles galore 1909 - Joe Hewitt bagged a treble against his former club as we won 4-1 at Sunderland with Arthur Goddard also scoring. Billy Hogg struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Sam Hardy also saving one of his spot-kicks. We have also twice beaten the Wearsiders 2-0 on New Year’s Day. 1949 - Billy Liddell converted from the spot at Roker Park to add to a Fred Hall own goal as right-half Phil Taylor made his 200th appearance. 1977 - Ray Kennedy and Phil Thompson both headed in goals at Anfield as Emlyn Hughes played his 400th League game for the reds. On the same day, Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat by Romania in Israel. 1910 - Jack Parkinson scored three, including a penalty, as we thumped Woolwich Arsenal 5-1 at Anfield, with Sam Bowyer adding a brace. Debuting between the sticks 1913 - Elisha Scott became our youngest ever goalkeeper at just eighteen years 131 days, keeping a clean sheet as we emerged from Newcastle United with honours even. 1896 - Harry Storer made his reds bow as we beat Manchester City 3-1 at Anfield. Jimmy Ross bagged a brace, with Malcolm McVean also on target. Luis up to a score scores 2014 - Luis Suárez became the quickest player ever to reach twenty Premier League goals in a season, taking just fifteen games to do so as he converted a second-half free-kick. We beat Hull City 2-0 at Anfield with Daniel Agger heading in from a corner before the break. Peter Cormack struck with Keith Weller nabbing one of his six goals past us, while Kevin Keegan reached a century of League games for the reds. Up against the Trotters 2011 – We secured a last-minute 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers in front of 35,400, the lowest League attendance at Anfield since Portsmouth visited on a Tuesday evening in December 2004. Kevin Davies headed the visitors in front with the last of his four goals against us, but Fernando Torres equalised early in the second half, with Joe Cole grabbing a dramatic late winner. 2007 - We won 3-0 at Anfield, thanks to a fantastic scissor-kick volley from Peter Crouch and strikes from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt, with all the goals coming in the second half. Dirk’s goal was our 900th in the Premier League. Harry Burgess struck one of his nine goals against the reds, with Wilf Chitty also scoring. 1997 - We also visited Stamford Bridge, with Roberto Di Matteo grabbing the only goal of the game. In white 1906 - We beat Stoke 3-1 at Anfield, having to start the match with just ten men as left-back Billy Dunlop arrived late. The team played in white as the visitors had turned up in red jerseys. Not a ‘sir’ just yet 2000 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was finally awarded an MBE for his services in the 1966 World Cup, one of the final five World Cup winners to receive this honour. 1983 - Ex-reds centre-forward John Toshack received the same honour. 1975 – Reds legend Ian Callaghan was also awarded an MBE. Double treble trouble 1934 - Jimmy Richardson and Sam Weaver both scored hat-tricks for Newcastle United as they thumped us 9-2 at St. James’ Park. The score was 2-2 at half-time, with Harold Taylor netting for the reds, to add to an Alec Betton own goal. Tommy Lang struck the last of his four goals past us, with Jimmy Boyd and Ron Williams also scoring for the home side. 2003 - A Laurent Robert free-kick deflected off Milan Baroš past Chris Kirkland as the Geordies won 1-0 on a sodden pitch. Salif Diao was sent off shortly after an hour for a wild challenge, while Grégory Vignal made his twentieth and final reds appearance as a late substitute. A rare defeat 1972 - Leeds United beat us 2-0, one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered during the whole of the 1970’s. Allan Clarke and Mick Jones each bagged one of their seven strikes past us. Other birthdays 1955 - Assistant Chief Scout Mike McGlynn was born in Liverpool. He was a senior coach with the FA for 20 years before becoming northern scout for West Ham United. He was initially in a part-time role for the reds before joining full time in 2007. 1881 – Welsh international half-back George Latham was born in Newtown. He joined the reds as an amateur in December 1902, signing on professionally the following year. He played nineteen reds games without scoring before joining Southport Central in 1909. Mølby foiled 1986 - Ian Rush ended a barren spell of eight games without a goal to draw us level at Sheffield Wednesday, before Martin Hodge saved a Jan Mølby spot-kick. Paul Walsh scored with his first touch from off the bench, but we were eventually held 2-2. He signed for League One Nottingham Forest in June 2009, having spent the previous campaign on loan with them. 2011 – Reserves keeper Charles Itandje officially signed for Greek Super League side P.A.E. A.P.S. Atromitos Athens after dramatically falling out of favour at Anfield. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward Jon Newby was sacked as Manager of Colwyn Bay, having been in charge since November 2011. 2014 - Djibril Cissé signed for Bastia, scoring twice in eleven outings during the rest of his first campaign in Corsica. 2015 – Forward Jack Dunn, centre-half Lloyd Jones and midfielder Kevin Stewart all joined Cheltenham Town on loan, making a total of fifteen appearances between them. Red farewells 2008 - Club Secretary Sheila Walsh died of cancer. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, “Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering.” 2023 – Scottish forward Frank McGarvey died from cancer. He arrived from Celtic for £300,000 in May 1979 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. However, he never broke into the first team at Anfield, moving back to Celtic for £270,000 in March 1980, becoming Scotland’s most expensive footballer. 1901 – Romany right-half Rab Howell played his 67th and last reds game in our 3-1 home victory over Stoke. Jack Cox, Andy McGuigan and right-back Tom Robertson all netted, with Robertson also missing a penalty as winger Tommy Robertson reached a century of reds games. 1912 – We beat Bradford City 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a goal from Harold Uren, his second and last for the club. 1914 – The Bantams won 1-0 in L4 thanks to one of Dickie Bond’s four goals against the reds. 1898 - Right-half John McCartney struck his seventh and final goal for the club as West Bromwich Albion held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with centre-half Joe McQue reaching a century of League games for the reds as inside-forward Willie Walker appeared for the twelfth and last time. 1903 – The Baggies won 2-0 in L4 with George Dorsett netting the first of his five goals past us, and Billy Lee also scoring. 1895 – We beat Albion 4-0 at home, with all the goals coming in the second half. Harry Bradshaw struck twice before Jimmy Ross and Davy Hannah scored late on. Forest four times 1996 – We beat Nottingham Forest 4-2 in a Premiership encounter at Anfield with Steve Stone and Ian Woan giving the visitors an early two-goal lead. A Robbie Fowler headed brace drew us level before half-time, with Stan Collymore putting us in front before Colin Cooper put through his own net. 1990 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at the City Ground, despite Ian Rush netting twice to hand us a two-goal half-time lead. Ian Wright had put the visitors ahead from the spot with one of his seven strikes against the reds. 2000 - We again faced the Gunners at home, with strikes from Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Nick Barmby and substitute Fowler giving us a comprehensive 4-0 win. A Milanese arrival 2001 - Milan Baroš officially completed his signing from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m. He grabbed a total of 27 goals in 108 reds games, helping us to claim the Worthington Cup in 2003 and the Champions League two years later before joining Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005. On the same day, Giovanni van Bronckhorst was sent off as Arsenal won 2-1 at Anfield. The Gunners went ahead through a Thierry Henry penalty, one of his nine strikes against us, and Freddie Ljungberg before Jari Litmanen pulled one back for the reds. Meanwhile, Harry Kewell signed for Leeds United. Nottingham wins 1905 - Joe Hewitt and Robbie Robinson were on the scoresheet as we beat Notts County 2-0 at Anfield. 1922 - Dick Forshaw struck a brace to give us a 3-1 win at their near-neighbours Nottingham Forest, with Dick Johnson also netting and Bobby Parker bagging the last of his eight goals past us. This was the first of three wins in four days as we went on to claim the title for the fourth time. More trebles 1899 – Inside-forward Charlie Satterthwaite scored a treble, his first goals for the club, as we beat Glossop 5-2 at Anfield, with inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter scoring both our other goals and Lorenzo Evans netting twice for the visitors. This was our hundredth home League match. 1893 - Malcolm McVean bagged a hat-trick as we won a friendly 6-2 at Ardwick, who later became Manchester City. James Stott nabbed a brace with James McBride also on the scoresheet. Luis yet again 2013 – Skipper Luis Suárez scored in his fourth consecutive game as we beat Cardiff City 3-1 at Anfield to go top of the table, becoming the first player to score ten Premier League goals in a calendar month, beating Mark Viduka’s record for Leeds United of eight in April 2003, and the first player to score at least two goals in four Premier League games in a row. Rush scored one, Rush scored two 1983 - Ian Rush scored five goals, becoming the third of five reds to do so in one game, as we thumped fourth-placed Luton Town 6-0 at home in the League, with his hat-trick completed by the 36th minute and his last being his fiftieth in the League for us. This was particularly impressive considering that he had to take painkillers before the game for a niggling groin injury and had only been passed fit two hours before the game. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, his 99th in the League for the reds. Amazingly, Tony Woodcock grabbed five goals for Arsenal on the same day, in their 6-2 victory at Aston Villa. He’s red, he’s white 2000 - Nick Barmby scored against Everton at the Anny Road end, before Kevin Campbell equalised with one of his four goals against the reds. We steamrollered our way to a 3-1 win in the second half, thanks to an Emile Heskey strike and a Patrik Berger penalty, after Vladimír Šmicer was felled by Thomas Gravesen, who was sent off. 1996 - Barmby arrived at Goodison from Middlesbrough for £5.75m. Births and death 1968 – Defender David Burrows was born in Dudley. He signed from West Bromwich Albion for £550,000 in October 1988 and bagged three goals in 193 reds appearances, helping us to a League title, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before joining West Ham United as part of the deal that brought Julian Dicks to Anfield in September 1993. 2000 – Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was born in Székesfehérvár. He signed from RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. for €70m in July 2023, scoring seven times in 45 outings in his first campaign with the reds. 1997 – Italian forward Federico Chiesa was born in Genoa. He arrived at Anfield in August 2024 for an initial £10m. 1985 - Italian keeper Daniele Padelli was born in Lecco. He spent the second half of the 2006/07 season on loan from Sampdoria, making just one senior appearance as we were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Charlton Athletic in our final League game of the season. 1906 – Irish forward Billy Millar was born in Ballymena. He arrived from Linfield for £1,150 in March 1928, scoring twice in three games before moving on to Barrow in January 1930. Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top flight, at the end of which we were still seeking our first win at that level. Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Drama in court 2010 – The prospective sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures went through a dramatic day. First, current club owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks obtained a Temporary Restraining Order from a Texas District Court to stop the sale of the club to NESV, before the High Court ruled against Gillett and Hicks. The sale was finally completed two days later. Walsh walks in 1984 - Paul Walsh signed from Luton Town for £700,000. He went on to nab 37 goals in 112 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1986, although he missed the run-in due to ruptured ankle ligaments. He left Anfield to sign for Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000 in February 1988. The youngsters claim a trophy 1996 - We won the FA Youth Cup for the first of four times to date. We beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield, to claim the trophy 4-1 on aggregate. Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen featured for the reds. Setting records 1979 - Our 3-0 win at Leeds United was our thirtieth League victory of the season, one behind Tottenham Hotspur’s record from 1960/61. David Johnson bagged a brace either side of a Jimmy Case strike in a game originally postponed from two months earlier. We therefore ended the League season having only conceded sixteen goals in all, a record that stood until 2004/05 with a then record 68 points, having clinched our eleventh League title a week earlier. We also netted a total of 85 League goals, so claiming a £50,000 prize from a national newspaper for scoring more than two goals per game across the season. This was our thirteenth away League win of the season, equalling a club record from 1904/05, and our ninth straight win at The Hawthorns. Álvaro Arbeloa played his 98th and final reds game, being involved with an angry exchange with Jamie Carragher towards the end of the match. Crossing the park 1895 - Forward Fred Geary signed from Everton for £60, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. Into the park 2002 - Liverpool Football Club announced their first set of plans for a new stadium in Stanley Park, which it was said would hold 55,000 supporters. The new stadium was scheduled to cost between £60m and £70m to build and it was claimed that it could even be ready for the start of the 2005/06 season. These plans have now been moth-balled. Heading east 1991 - We played our first ever game in Singapore, drawing 1-1 with Arsenal in the Caltex Cup, with Ian Rush on the scoresheet. The game went into extra-time, but we lost 4-3 on penalties in the National Stadium. 1961 - Alan A’Court netted for England in an FA Tour game in Singapore that ended in a 9-0 rout. Manchester City’s George Hannah bagged a treble. Facing the Mancs 1919 – We lost 1-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford in a game staged in aid of the National Footballers’ War Fund. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games after signing from his hometown club Runcorn in April 1926. 1982 – Centre-half John McGregor signed from Queen's Park, failing to break through before moving on to Rangers in May 1987, with whom he won the League Cup. 2020 – First-team coach Jacques Crevoisier died. He worked under Gérard Houllier for two years after the departure of Patrice Bergues. Ex-red Rigobert Song also represented his country that day, as Cameroon lost a friendly 2-1 in Denmark. King Kenny for the Scots Kenny Dalglish twice represented his country against Wales in the British International Championships on this day in the 1970’s. 1975 - He featured in a 2-2 draw alongside John Toshack and ex-red Ted MacDougall at Ninian Park. Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes and Kevin Keegan all played the same day in a goalless draw in Northern Ireland. 1978 - Kenny, Graeme Souness and Joey Jones also played in a 1-1 draw at Hampden Park. Djibril the champion 1999 - Future red Djibril Cissé played as Auxerre beat Saint-Étienne at the Stade de France in a penalty shoot-out to claim the Coupe Nationale des Juniors, also known as the Challenge Emmanuel Gambardella. 2006 – Future reds centre-half Kolo Touré was on the losing side as Barcelona beat Arsenal 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League Final in Paris. Happy birthday cobber 1974 – Former Head of Fitness & Conditioning Darren Burgess was born in Sydney. He joined the club after the 2010 World Cup, but moved back down under in September 2012. On the move again 2005 - Ex-red Patrik Berger agreed to sign for Aston Villa from Portsmouth on a free transfer on 1st July. He had notched eight times in sixty Pompey games, but turned out just 32 times for Villa, netting twice. He was released in May 2008, returning home to join Sparta Praha. 2010 – Ex-reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević was released by Leicester City, having failed to make the first team since making his loan move permanent. 2012 – Ex-reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall signed for Morecambe, so far netting twice in 64 games for the League Two outfit. 2018 – Pepijn Lijnders was sacked as Manager of N.E.C. after they failed to gain promotion, soon returning to a coaching role with the reds. 2022 - Martin Škrtel announced his retirement from playing, having most recently appeared for Hajskala Ráztočno in his native Slovakia. He joined the reds from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m in January 2008 to become our most expensive defender to date. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. On the same day, future red Cody Gakpo won the Golden Shoe Award as the Eredivisie’s Footballer of the Year. 2023 – It was announced that forward Roberto Firmino and midfielders Naby Keïta, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would all be leaving the club at the end of the season. Signing on 1991 - Midfielder Kevin Lampkin signed professional terms with the reds. He failed to break through into the first team but went on to play League football with Huddersfield Town and Mansfield Town. 2015 - Future reds midfielder Marko Grujić signed a new three-year contract with Crvena Zvezda. However, he was transferred to the reds for £5.1m the following January. 2021 – New York-born midfielder Matteo Ritacci signed a new contract. He has yet to make the breakthrough at Anfield, spending the 2022 season on loan with Charleston Battery in North Carolina. Final caps 2018 - Elijah Dixon-Bonner won his fourth and last cap for England Under-17’s against the Netherlands, with Bobby Duncan and future red Ryan Gravenberch also playing in their goalless European Championships Semi-final in Chesterfield, with the Dutch triumphing in a penalty shoot-out as ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England. On the same day, future red Jakub Ojrzyński featured for Poland Under-15’s for the third and final time as they drew a friendly 0-0 in Estonia. Also in international action 1924 – Tommy Lucas played for England as they beat France 3-1 in a friendly in Paris. 1950 – Jimmy Payne and Phil Taylor both featured for England B in an unofficial international against the Netherlands in Amsterdam, losing 3-0. 1964 – Future red Dave Wilson appeared for England Under-23’s in their 4-0 win in Israel. 1968 – Roger Hunt played for England as they lost 4-1 to a Young England side. 1984 – Ex-reds Howard Gayle and Dave Watson both featured for England Under-21’s as they won the first leg of their European Championships Final 1-0 in Spain. 1988 – Steve Nicol played for Scotland in their goalless Rous Cup draw with Colombia at Hampden Park, with future red István Kozma appearing for Hungary in their 4-0 friendly defeat by Austria in Budapest. 1992 – Future red Gary McAllister represented Scotland in their 1-0 friendly defeat by the USA in Denver. 2006 – Future red Daniel Agger played for Denmark Under-21’s as they beat Spain 2-0 in Copenhagen. 2014 – Future red Gini Wijnaldum featured for the Netherlands in their 1-1 friendly draw with Ecuador in Amsterdam.-

Winning trophies We have twice won major honours on this day in our history. 1974 - We ‘undressed’ Newcastle United 3-0 at Wembley to win our second FA Cup, thanks to a brace from Kevin Keegan and a Steve Heighway goal. Future reds Alan Kennedy and Terry McDermott both played for United. 1976 - We clinched our ninth League title, Bob Paisley’s first as Manager, as we won 3-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. We only needed a point, while Wolves had to win to stay up. Kevin Keegan, John Toshack and Ray Kennedy all scored in the last quarter of an hour after Steve Kindon had put Wolves ahead. 1988 – The PFA announced that the reds were the winners of the inaugural Fair Play trophy. European disappointment 1965 - We played in our first European Semi-final, defeating European Cup holders Internazionale 3-1 in the first leg at Anfield, with the recently-won FA Cup being paraded around the ground prior to kick off. Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan and Ian St. John all scored, with a Chris Lawler strike ruled off for a debatable offside. The crowd crowed “Oh Inter 1-2-3, go back to Italy!” Unfortunately, Inter’s away goal, scored by Alessandro Mazzola, would eventually prove crucial, as would the referee’s intervention in the San Siro. Welsh out 1956 – Don Welsh was sacked as reds boss. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, taking charge at Anfield for 232 games after being appointed in March 1951. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be dismissed, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land. Yet another win 2019 – We won 3-2 at Rafael Benítez’s Newcastle United with Divock Origi’s late header ensuring the title race with Manchester City went down to the last day of the campaign. Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring, with Christian Atsu equalising before Mohamed Salah put us back in front before half an hour had elapsed. Salomón Rondón drew the home side level again after the break, with Salah having to be taken off with an injury that ensured he missed the upcoming critical UEFA Champions League Semi-final second leg meeting with Barcelona. Nando again 2008 - Fernando Torres scored in his eighth consecutive home League game, equalling Roger Hunt’s club record as we beat Manchester City 1-0. This was his 32nd goal of the season. 1929 - We also hosted Manchester City, with Gordon Hodgson netting in a 1-1 draw, our final game of a season in which we finished fifth, his thirtieth League strike of the season. Tommy Johnson netted one of his eight goals against the reds. Sami off 2009 – Centre-back Sami Hyypiä agreed to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen when his contract expired at the end of the season. The mighty Finn played 464 reds games, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He later took over as Team Manager at the BayArena for two years. In and out 1896 - Inside-forward Willie Michael signed from Heart Of Midlothian, scoring five times in 23 reds games before, returning to Tynecastle in April 1897. 1898 – Forward Joe Lumsden left the reds to join Glossop North End. He had struck twice in eight outings since arriving from Burton Wanderers in June 1897. 1910 - Right-back Alf West rejoined the reds from Reading. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. Happy birthday Igor 1978 - Igor Bišcan was born in Zagreb. The big Croat played 118 reds games, netting three times as he helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001, and the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role on the road to Istanbul, moving on to Panathinaikos in July 2005. On the same day, eventual champions Nottingham Forest held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Facing the Blues 1991 - We came from two goals down to level but eventually lost 4-2 at Chelsea. Young winger Jimmy Carter came off the bench and was later himself substituted by Ronnie Rosenthal. David Speedie and Rosenthal got on the scoresheet, while Gary Gillespie played his 214th and last reds game. Kerry Dixon netted two of his seven strikes past us, with Dennis Wise converting a penalty, one of his four goals against the reds, and Gordon Durie also on target with the last of his five. Ex-red Bobby Campbell resigned as Blues boss three days later. 1985 - We also faced the Blues in the First Division, this time winning at Anfield by the odd goal in seven. Steve Nicol nabbed a brace while Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush also struck. Future red Nigel Spackman scored from the spot for the visitors, with Kerry Dixon and Gordon Davies also on target. Youngest ever 2019 – Future red Harvey Elliott became the youngest ever player in the Premier League in Fulham’s 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers, aged just sixteen years and thirty days. Managerial comings and goings 1977 - Ian St. John was sacked as Manager of Portsmouth. He had been in charge for three seasons, leading them to just 31 victories in 124 games in charge as they were relegated into the old Third Division, and then narrowly escaped a further descent to the League basement. 2001 - Ex-reds reserve Dave Watson became Tranmere Rovers Manager. He won 22 of his 55 games as they steadied in the Second Division. 2018 - Steven Gerrard was appointed as Manager of Rangers, taking over the following month, with Gary McAllister being named as his future Assistant at the same time. The end of the road for Liddell 1940 - Billy Liddell’s first professional contract that he had signed the previous April expired. He went on to strike 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. Farewell to the lower reaches 1962 - We played our last ever Second Division game, going down 4-2 at Swansea Town in a game postponed from a month earlier due to a smallpox outbreak in South Wales. Ian St. John and Roger Hunt grabbed our goals. Colin Webster bagged a brace for the Swans, with Brayley Reynolds netting the last of his seven strikes past us and Mel Nurse also on target. King Kenny starts and ends 1967 - Kenny Dalglish signed as an amateur for Celtic, turning professional the following year. He helped them to claim four League titles, four Scottish Cups and the Scottish League Cup, striking 167 times in 269 games. 1986 – His testimonial match took place at Hampden Park. Tommy Docherty’s side of Anglos beat Alex Ferguson’s home-based Scots 5-2 with Kenny on target for both sides! European joy 1999 - Pepe Reina played for Spain Under-16’s as they reached the Final of the European Championships in the Czech Republic by seeing off Germany 4-0 in their Semi-final encounter. Comeback 1968 - Bobby Graham came on for Tony Hateley as we were 1-0 down at Leeds United to one of Mick Jones’s seven goals past us. Chris Lawler drew us level with six minutes remaining, with Graham bagging the winner a minute later. Keeper Tommy Lawrence played his 300th reds game, with this result helping us to finish the season in third, one place above Leeds. Wins in Bristol We twice played Bristol Rovers at their Memorial Ground in consecutive years in the 1930’s, for the Bristol Hospitals Lord Mayor’s Cup. 1936 - The game ended 5-5 with Phil Taylor bagging a brace to add to goals from Syd Roberts, Fred Howe and Alf Hanson, with the trophy being shared. 1937 - We won 2-1, with Berry Nieuwenhuys on target twice. Rushie the skipper 1987 - Ian Rush captained the reds in his last home game before he moved to Juventus. He struck the only goal of the game against Watford. Jack’s farewell 1935 – Tommy Johnson and Alf Hanson struck to put us two goals ahead against Sunderland in L4. However, Bobby Gurney grabbed one of his sixteen strikes past us, with George Goddard also scoring as the game ended 2-2 in L4 as we ended the season in seventh with left-back Jack Tennant appearing for the 42nd and final time. Sweet! 1992 – Ahead of the FA Cup Final, Candy was announced as the club’s first ever permanent match sponsor, for the 1992/93 season. Wrong shaped ball 1997 - A Super League match between St. Helens and Castleford Tigers was staged at Anfield, with Saints winning 42-16 in front of 12,329. Scots on target in friendlies 1960 - Future red Ian St. John netted his first goal for Scotland while winning his fifth cap, as they lost 3-2 at home to Poland. The Scots were managed by Andy Beattie, who had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1955 - Billy Liddell struck while winning his 25th cap as Portugal lost 3-0 at Hampden Park. Future reds keeper Tommy Younger won his first cap in the same game. More final caps 1986 - Ronnie Rosenthal won his last cap as a Maccabi Haifa player, his eleventh in total, as Israel were thumped 7-2 by Argentina in a friendly in Tel-Aviv. Ex-red Avi Cohen also played. 2017 – Future red Ki-Jana Hoever won his fourth and last Under-15’s cap as the Netherlands beat Germany 2-1 in a friendly in Wezep. Meanwhile, Rhian Brewster bagged a brace for England Under-17’s as they beat Norway 3-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Croatia, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Kozma twice 1988 – Future red István Kozma played for Hungary as they beat Iceland 3-0 in a friendly in Budapest. 1994 – Kozma won his first cap in his second spell as an Újpest player as they lost a friendly 3-2 in Poland. On the move 2023 – Left-back Luke Chambers signed a new contract. He has so far made four senior reds appearances. 2020 – Keeper Loris Karius terminated his two-year loan contract with Beşiktaş JK a year early, due to a dispute over wages. 2016 – Ex-reds midfielder Joe Cole signed for Tampa Bay Rowdies, netting nine times in 26 outings in his first campaign. 2007 - Real Club Recreativo de Huelva announced that they would sign Florent Sinama-Pongolle for €4m, whom he had joined on loan the previous August. He struck 22 times in 69 outings for the Andalusian side before moving to Club Atlético de Madrid in July 2008. 2002 - Former reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed for Serie A side Lecce from Ternana on a free transfer. Cyril’s century 1949 – Derby County triumphed 3-0 at the Baseball Ground. John Morris scored two of his seven goals past us, with Billy Steel also on the scoresheet with one of his four. Keeper Cyril Sidlow reached a century of League outings in this game. Other game on this day 1978 – We were held to a goalless draw with Nottingham Forest at Anfield, ending the season seven points behind the visiting champions in second place, despite securing the same number of points as in the previous campaign when we won the League. More youngsters in Euro action 2002 – David Raven and Mark Smyth played for England Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat of FR Yugoslavia in their European Championships Quarter-final in Denmark. 2007 – Future reds Victor Moses and Mamadou Sakho both featured in group games in the same competition in Belgium. 2008 – Future reds Xherdan Shaqiri and Thiago Alcântara featured as the Swiss Under-17’s lost 2-0 to Spain in Turkey. 2018 – Elijah Dixon-Bonner played for England in the same tournament as they beat Israel 2-1 in a group game in Chesterfield, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2019 – Isaac Mabaya played for England Under-15’s as they lost 3-0 to Turkey in Italy.
