On the same day, the reds lost a friendly 3-2 to Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in the USA, with Harry Wilson scoring and Rhian Brewster converting a penalty. Happy birthdays 1926 - Inside-forward Kevin Baron was born in Preston. The Anfield favourite arrived from his hometown side as an amateur in September 1944, signing pro terms in August 1945. He made 153 reds appearances, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, nabbing 32 goals. He moved on to Southend United in May 1954. 1981 - Grégory Vignal was born in Montpellier. The young French left-back failed to establish himself at Anfield, spending much of his time out on loan at Bastia, Stade Rennais and R.C.D. Espanyol. James Milner had an early penalty saved, but Lazar Marković and Daniel Sturridge were on target after the break. 2008 – Andrea Dossena played his first reds game as we drew 1-1 with Wisla Kraków in Fribourg in Switzerland. Andriy Voronin bagged our goal. 2003 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both played their first reds games as we drew 1-1 with Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road, with Michael Owen on target. The game was a testimonial match for Crewe’s Steve Macauley and Shaun Smith, held over from the season before. Diarra’s day 2002 - We won 1-0 at Le Havre AC as we kicked off our pre-season schedule. Debutant Alou Diarra, who was soon to join the home side on loan, enjoyed the rare distinction of returning to the pitch after having been substituted, as a replacement for Vegard Heggem, so making his only reds appearance. In the far east 2001 - We beat the Thailand national side 3-1 in Bangkok to claim the Coca-Cola Super Cup in the Rajamangala National Stadium. International beginnings 1976 - Future red Avi Cohen played his first senior game for his country as Israel were held to a goalless draw by Guatemala in the Olympics in Toronto. 2003 – Future red Daniel Agger made his debut for Denmark Under-20’s, netting his only goal at this level as they beat Wales 2-0 in a NI Milk Cup game in Northern Ireland. Yossi to England 2005 - Yossi Benayoun signed for West Ham United from Real Racing Club de Santander for £2.5m. He struck eight times in 72 games for the Hammers before joining the reds for £5m in July 2007, featuring for the losing side in the 2006 FA Cup Final. Moving on 1928 - Forward Tom Devlin was sold to Swindon Town for £250, having failed to make our first team. His brother, centre-forward Willie, was at Anfield at the same time as him. 1956 – Keeper Dave Underwood left for Watford after playing fifty reds games since arriving from Vicarage Road for £7,000 in December 1953. 2006 - Reserves full-back Calum Woods signed for Dunfermline Athletic, having failed to make the break-through at Anfield. He struck eleven goals in 153 games for the Pars, often at centre-back, before joining Huddersfield Town in June 2011. 2023 – Midfielder James Balagizi signed a new contract, joining Wigan Athletic on loan on the same day, playing seven times in his six months with the League One outfit. 2019 - Luis Díaz joined Porto from Colombian side Atlético Junior after twenty goals in 108 games, with the Portuguese club buying 80% of his economic rights for €7m. 2013 – Reserves forward Henoc Mukendi joined Partick Thistle on loan, making just one first-team appearance in six months at Firhill. 2011 – Two reserves left the club. Left-back Chris Mavinga was sold to Stade Rennais for £1m, while keeper Péter Gulácsi joined Hull City on loan. Mavinga signed from Paris St. Germain in July 2009, joining Belgian side Koninklijke Racing Club Genk on loan in January 2011. He bagged five goals in ninety games for the Prenton Park outfit, as well as taking on coaching duties. Partridge stars 1999 - Richie Partridge starred for the Republic of Ireland Under-18’s in their 1-0 defeat of Spain in a European Championship Finals group game in Sweden, winning the penalty from which the Irish scored. 1998 – He was on target in the same competition in Ireland’s 5-2 defeat of Croatia in Ayia Napia. More internationals in action 2007 - Emiliano Insúa played for Argentina Under-20’s in Toronto as they beat Chile 3-0 to reach the Final of the World Championships. 1991 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared for Brazil in their 2-0 defeat of Colombia in a final round Copa América game in Chile. Grég sees red 2000 - Grégory Vignal was sent off as France Under-18’s beat a Czech Republic side that included future red Milan Baroš 1-0 in a European Championship Finals group game in Bavaria. More moves 1999 - Stan Collymore joined Fulham on loan from Aston Villa. He scored just once in nine appearances for the Cottagers before returning to Villa Park. He was then moved on to Leicester City on a free transfer a few months later, at a loss to Villa of £7m. 2000 - Ex-reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed for Italian side Ternana from Crystal Palace for £100,000. He stayed there for two seasons before moving on to Lecce. 2012 – Right-back Nathaniel Clyne joined Southampton from Crystal Palace after one goal in 139 games for the Eagles. Future Assistant Manager Sean O'Driscoll was named Nottingham Forest boss on the same day. He was sacked just five months later after only leading them to ten wins in 26 games in charge. 2013 – Future reds midfielder Fabinho joined AS Monaco on loan from Rio Ave, eventually making the move permanent in May 2015. He struck 31 times in 233 games for the French side before joining the reds for an initial £39m in July 2018. On the same day, centre-half Ben Davies joined York City on loan from Preston North End, playing 47 times for the Minstermen. 2014 – Forward Steven Gillespie signed for newly promoted Conference Premier side Altrincham. He netted once in 22 outings before moving on to Warrington Town. 2022 – Ben Davies was sold to Rangers for a reported initial £3m, having failed to make a senior appearance since signing from Preston North End for an initial £500,000 in February 2021. Brian’s bow 1969 - University graduate Brian Hall made his reds bow in a goalless top-flight draw at Stoke City as a substitute for Roger Hunt. He went on to net 21 times in 224 reds appearances, was also the club’s Public Relations Manager from 1991 until retiring in 2012. 1960 - We also faced the Potters, with Billy Liddell striking a brace, including a penalty, as we beat them 3-0 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Bobby Murdoch netted the other. Debuting between the sticks 2012 – Brazilian custodian Alexander Doni played the first of his four reds games as Aston Villa held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Chris Herd scored for the Villains after ten minutes, with Luis Suárez nabbing a late leveller after we had hit the woodwork four times. On the same day, Jerome Sinclair featured for England Under-16’s who lost a penalty shoot-out to Russia after their friendly ended 2-2. 1967 - Keeper John Ogston played his only reds game in our 3-1 home League win over Newcastle United, with Roger Hunt bagging a brace to add to a goal from Ian Callaghan. This game launched Emlyn Hughes’ nickname of Crazy Horse after he rugby tackled United forward Albert Bennett in only his fifth reds match. Heading towards Basel 2016 – We held Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund to a 1-1 draw in their Signal Iduna Park in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Quarter-final. Divock Origi handed us a half-time lead, but Mats Hummels headed in soon after the break. Al off the mark 2007 - Our first ever game at Reading ended in a 2-1 win. Full-back Álvaro Arbeloa raced most of the length of the pitch to notch his first reds goal as we reached 200 League points under Rafael Benítez. Dirk Kuyt headed a late winner after Brynjar Gunnarsson had drawn the home side level. Bashing the Hammers 1984 - We trounced West Ham United 6-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush and Graeme Souness both netted twice, with Kenny Dalglish bagging his 150th reds goal and Ronnie Whelan also on target as we went 4-0 up inside half an hour. Most recently 2024 – We drew 2-2 at Manchester United as Luis Díaz bagged the only goal of a dominant first half. After the break, Jarell Quansah passed straight to Bruno Fernandes, who scored past stranded keeper Caoimhin Kelleher from inside the centre circle. Kobbie Mainoo put the home side ahead but Mohamed Salah levelled with a late penalty. Cottaged by Elton’s cousin 1956 - Roy Dwight scored a hat-trick for Fulham in their 3-1 Second Division win over us at Craven Cottage, the first of his four goals past us. Roy’s cousin Reg later went on to great fame and fortune, under the name of Elton John. Billy Liddell netted our consolation, while winger Joe Dickson played his sixth and final reds game and keeper Dave Underwood appeared for the fiftieth and last time. On a roll 1979 - We secured the third of five straight League wins, all without conceding, as we beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield. Jimmy Case, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott all struck in the second half to wipe out the bad memories of losing an FA Cup Semi-final replay to Manchester United three days earlier. This was Phil Thompson’s first game as reds skipper. 1951 - We also beat the Gunners in a top-flight meeting, with Albert Stubbins and Jimmy Payne scoring in a 2-1 win at Highbury, with Cliff Holton nabbing the first of his four goals against the reds as Payne reached a century of League outings for the reds in what was our 2,000th official game. Derby disappointment 2018 – We were held to a goalless draw by Everton in a drab Goodison encounter. 1917 - We were beaten 4-0 at Goodison Park in a Wartime League match. International debutants 1900 - Alex Raisbeck won the first of his eight Scotland caps as they thumped England 4-1 at Celtic Park in the British International Championships. 1965 - Tommy Smith made his debut for England Under-23’s in their goalless encounter with Czechoslovakia at Elland Road. 1906 - Billy Dunlop won his only Scottish cap as they won 2-1 in the same fixture at Hampden Park. Clubmate Raisbeck was his skipper that day, while ex-reds inside-right George Livingstone also debuted in this game, winning his only cap as a Manchester City player. Red endings 1947 - Wing-half Tom Bush played his 69th and final reds game, over thirteen years after his debut. We beat Preston North End 3-0 as we closed in on our fifth League title, with Albert Stubbins grabbing two and Jack Balmer also on target. Bush later joined the reds’ coaching staff. Keeper Ray Minshull saved a penalty taken by the visitors’ Bill Shankly. 1955 – Winger Harold Uren died. He joined the reds as an amateur in April 1906, turning out 45 times and notching twice before joining Everton in February 1912 for £300 with forward Billy Lacey and centre-forward Tommy Gracie heading in the opposite direction. A win at Old Trafford 1982 - A goal from Craig Johnston was enough to beat Manchester United. Bruce Grobbelaar saved an early Frank Stapleton penalty, being helped by seeing a picture of him converting a previous spot-kick in the programme before the match! Win, lose and draw against the Blues We have played Birmingham City three times in the top-flight on this day over the years, with varying degrees of success. 1939 - Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer scored a brace apiece as we thumped City 4-0 at Anfield. 1923 – We were held to a goalless draw, also at home. 1973 - A Tommy Smith goal was not enough as we went down 2-1 at St. Andrews, with Emlyn Hughes sent off in the final minute, although he later successfully appealed the dismissal. Future Blues forward Bob Latchford netted one of his five goals against us, with Bob Hatton bagging the first of his four past us while left-back Alec Lindsay reached a century of League games for the reds. Mixed fortunes against the Clarets We have faced Burnley three times on this day in history, winning only once and losing twice. 1900 - We lost 1-0 at Anfield, with ex-reds forward Abe Hartley on target. Sam Raybould had a penalty saved for the reds. 1950 - We won another First Division meeting 2-0 at Turf Moor thanks to goals from Jimmy Payne and Billy Liddell. 1919 - Our Wartime League match ended in a 5-3 away defeat, with Rob Matthews netting twice and Harold Wadsworth also on target. Also recently 2013 – West Ham United held us to a goalless League draw at Anfield, with a Daniel Sturridge strike wrongly ruled out for offside. Oussama Assaidi played his twelfth and last reds game. Up against the Terriers 1928 - We won a top-flight match 4-2 at Huddersfield Town, with Jimmy Walsh bagging his 27th and final reds goal. Tommy Reid, Gordon Hodgson and Dick Edmed grabbing our other goals, with Alex Jackson nabbing the first two of his four goals against us. 1962 - We were held to a 1-1 draw in our other meeting on this day in history on our way to the Second Division title. Roger Hunt netted for the reds at Anfield that day. Beating City We have twice defeated Manchester City on this day in history. 1954 - Brian Jackson struck twice as we won a top-flight encounter 2-0 at Maine Road. 1945 - Don Welsh bagged a brace with Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet as we won a Wartime League match at Anfield 3-0 that also counted for the Wartime League Cup. Milestone goals 1958 - Forward Bobby Murdoch bagged his seventh and final reds goal as we beat Stoke City 3-0 at Anfield in a Second Division encounter. He only played five more times before joining Barrow in September 1959. Billy Liddell scored the other goals, one of them from the spot. 1934 – We drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion. We fell two goals behind at the break to a Jock Carter strike and then the first of Teddy Sandford’s five goals against the reds. Vic Wright scored his first goal with Gordon Hodgson also netting in the second half. Management moves 2009 – Assistant Secretary Ian Silvester was appointed Club Secretary, following the death of Bryce Morrison the previous month. On the same day, ex-reserves midfielder David Mannix was charged with breaching the FA’s betting rules while playing for Chester City. He was later banned for ten months and fined £4,000. 2017 – Ex-reds boss Brendan Rodgers signed a new four-year contract with Celtic, having already led them to the League Cup and title since taking charge in May 2016. He left for Leicester City in February 2019. Harry on the move 2013 – Left-winger Harry Kewell signed for Al-Gharafa, in the Qatar Stars League. He struck once in three games before returning to Australia to sign for Melbourne Heart. In trouble 2015 - Ex-reds left-back Andrea Dossena was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting from Harrods, although no further action was taken. Also in international action 1894 – Future red Edgar Chadwick featured as England drew 2-2 with Scotland in the British International Championships at Celtic Park. 1976 – Future red Kenny Dalglish played for Scotland in their 1-0 friendly defeat of Switzerland at Hampden Park. 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye played for Norway Under-19’s as they lost a tournament game 5-1 to Hungary in Poland. 2004 – Jordan Holmes played for England Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to the Ivory Coast in the Montaigu Tournament. 2007 – Future red Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-16’s as they beat Castelo Branco Under-18’s in Portugal. -
The start of it all 1892 - Everton voted to move from Anfield. John Houlding was therefore left with an empty ground, but no team to play in it. Within six months, Liverpool FC had been formed and was on its way to taking the Lancashire League by storm. God strikes again 2006 - Robbie Fowler struck the first goal of his second reds spell, opening the scoring against Fulham at Anfield. Collins John equalised before an own goal from Michael Brown put us 2-1 ahead at the break. Fernando Morientes and Peter Crouch scored late on before Stephen Warnock grabbed his only ever goal for the club as we triumphed 5-1. 1997 – Fowler grabbed the opener at Nottingham Forest, but Ian Woan equalised as this League encounter ended 1-1, with Steve McManaman playing his 200th League game for the reds while Jamie Redknapp appeared for the reds for the 200th time in total. Masch off the mark 2008 - Javier Mascherano scored his first reds goal, a thunderous strike as we came from behind to beat Reading 2-1 at Anfield. Fernando Torres headed in a Steven Gerrard free-kick to net in his fourth consecutive game, to become the first red to score twenty League goals in a season since Robbie Fowler in 1995/96. This was our seventh straight victory in all competitions. Alberto off the mark 2010 - Alberto Aquilani scored his first reds goal as we thumped Portsmouth 4-1 at Anfield. Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel had already struck in the first half before the Italian netted our third goal in a six-minute spell. Torres added his second after the break with Nadir Belhadj nabbing a late consolation. 1947 – Albert Stubbins nabbed a brace as we won 2-1 at Fratton Park in a top-flight meeting, with right-half Harry Eastham playing his 68th and final reds game. Full-back Jim Harley reached a century of reds games. Happy birthdays 1946 - David Moores was born in Liverpool. He became Chairman in August 1991, remaining in charge until he sold his 51.5% of the shares in The Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Plc to George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks in February 2007. He resigned from the Board of Directors in June 2009. 1869 – Outside-left John Drummond was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Sheffield United in August 1894, scoring once in eighteen outings before moving on to Barnsley St. Peter’s the following year. Karim Benzema struck the most recent of his seven goals past us to date as the Spanish side ended our hopes in the competition for the third consecutive season. Seeing off the Portuguese We have twice on this day overcome Portuguese opposition to progress in European competition. 1978 - We defeated SL Benfica 4-1 at Anfield in the European Cup Third Round to go through 6-2 on aggregate, with Ian Callaghan scoring his 68th and final reds goal and Kenny Dalglish, Terry McDermott and Phil Neal also netting as Nené scored one of his three goals for Benfica against us. First and last games 1924 - Outside-right Archie Rawlings made his reds bow as Blackburn Rovers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. He went on to net ten times in 67 reds games. 1930 - Outside-left Gordon Gunson debuted in our 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers, with Jimmy Smith bagging both goals. 1950 - Defender Frank Christie made the first of his four reds appearances in a goalless draw at Manchester United. 1958 – Outside-right Tony McNamara played his tenth and last game as Billy Liddell netted the only goal of our Second Division trip to Lincoln City. Signing on 1930 – Keeper Andrew Aitken signed from Wallsend. He only ever made one senior reds appearance, in our 3-3 draw at Blackburn Rovers in December of that year, returning to amateur football with Mickley in April 1931. 1934 – Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop signed from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500, having already earned 26 England caps. He played 71 reds games without scoring. He moved on to Cardiff City in November 1937. 1938 – Left-half Jimmy McInnes signed from Third Lanark for £5,500. He struck once in 48 outings, joining the administrative staff after retiring from playing in 1946, taking over as Club Secretary in 1955. He stayed in this role until May 1965, when he sadly hanged himself above the Archway Stile, the old turnstile between the Kop and Kemlyn Road stands, just four days after we had claimed the FA Cup for the first time. 2024 – Forward Jayden Danns signed a new contract, having netted twice in four senior outings to that point. Red centurions 1952 - Inside-forward Kevin Baron made his hundredth reds appearance in a 3-3 draw at West Bromwich Albion. Billy Liddell, Bob Paisley and Albert Stubbins all struck, with Ronnie Allen netting two of his five goals against us and Reg Ryan also on target for the Baggies. 1975 – Kevin Keegan played his 200th game for the club with Phil Thompson reaching a century as Sheffield United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield with Emlyn Hughes guilty of a lame dive in an attempt to win a late penalty. 1913 – Right-back Ephraim Longworth reached a century of League games for the reds as we beat Middlesbrough 4-2 at Anfield, with half-back Harry Lowe bagging his second and final goal for the club and defender Ernest Peake netting for the sixth and last time. Arthur Metcalf also netted, with Jack Parkinson converting a penalty. Jackie Carr bagged two of his five strikes past us. Berry passes on 1953 - Forward Arthur Berry died on this day in 1953. Arthur won Olympic gold in both 1908 and 1912 but only made four senior reds appearances across two spells at Anfield. He was the son of Edwin Berry, who was reds Chairman in the late 1900’s. Cally for the League 1967 - Ian Callaghan played for the Football League as they beat a Scottish League side 3-0. Other birthdays 1910 - Jack ‘Nipper’ Roberts was born in Blundellsands. He only made one first team appearance after signing from Southport in May 1933, moving on to Wigan Athletic in June 1934. He was an all-round sportsman, even playing baseball for England. He became famous when he escaped from a prisoner-of-war camp in Italy, walking 400 miles to freedom despite a broken neck! 1928 - Keeper Dave Underwood was born in London. Michael misses 2000 - Michael Owen saw his penalty crash back off the bar but not over the line as Aston Villa held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Jamie Carragher was playing his hundredth reds game. Backing out 1948 - Left-back Barney Ramsden left Anfield to join Sunderland. He had arrived on a free transfer from Sheffield Victoria in March 1935, helping us to claim the first post-war League title in 1947, making a total of 63 first-team appearances without notching. 1935 – Right-back Willie Steel was sold to Birmingham City for £5,000. He failed to score in 128 reds games after signing from St. Johnstone in September 1931. Fred’s treble 1890 – Future reds forward Fred Geary reportedly struck a hat-trick on his England debut, as they trounced Ireland 9-1 in the British International Championships in Belfast. Poland for Wales 1939 - Future reds keeper George Poland made his senior debut for Wales, playing in their 3-1 British International Championships defeat of Ireland in Wrexham. He only won two full caps, plus a further four in wartime while on our books. Merry Christmas Everton 2016 – Sadio Mané bagged an injury-time winner, the only goal of our game at Goodison Park. Happy birthdays 1986 - Ryan Babel was born in Amsterdam. He signed from Ajax for £11.5m in July 2007, proving a very useful asset in his first season, especially from the bench, as he equalled Djibril Cissé’s club record of seven strikes in a season as a substitute. However, subsequent campaigns were far less productive, and he struck a total of 22 times in 146 appearances before being sold to German side TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for £6m in January 2011. 1916 – Left-winger George Paterson was born in Aberdeen. Mac the Terrier 2008 - Terry McDermott was appointed Assistant Manager of Huddersfield Town. They finished ninth in League One at the end of that season and he stayed with the Terriers until being sacked in February 2012 after Lee Clark was dismissed as Manager. Czechs bouncing 2002 - Milan Baroš and Vladimír Šmicer were named among the top ten Czech footballers in the country’s annual Player of the Year poll. Baroš came fourth in the Golden Ball awards while Šmicer was placed tenth. Borussia Dortmund’s Tomáš Rosický was the overall winner. The knight departs 1969 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was sold to Bolton Wanderers for £33,000, after ten years at Anfield. In that time, he had struck a then-record 286 times in 492 reds games, helping us to two League titles, the Second Division championship, our first FA Cup win in 1965 and an FA Charity Shield. He remains our record League goalscorer, with 245 strikes. He is also revered among older Wanderers’ fans after 25 goals in 84 games. 1953 – Keeper Dave Underwood signed from Watford for £7,000, playing fifty reds games before returning to Vicarage Road in July 1956. Ton up for Nando 2009 – Fernando Torres played his hundredth reds game as we beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 at Anfield, coming off the bench to add to David N’Gog’s early headed goal. Charles N’Zogbia bagged an injury time consolation after Jason Scotland had struck the crossbar for the visitors. Mo again 2021 – Mohamed Salah struck in his third consecutive reds game as we beat Newcastle United 3-1 at Anfield. Ex-red Jonjo Shelvey gave the visitors the lead before Diogo Jota equalised. Salah put us ahead just four minutes later, with Trent Alexander-Arnold adding a late third from distance. Mixed fortunes against the mancs 2018 – We beat Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield, with right-back Nathaniel Clyne reaching a century of reds games. Sadio Mané put us ahead before an Alisson error enabled Jesse Lingard to equalise. However, substitute Xherdan Shaqiri’s brace handed us victory. 2007 - Manchester United kept their fourth consecutive League clean sheet at Anfield, a joint record for any club, as Carlos Tévez struck the only goal of the game, the first of his four to date past us. A start and an end 1939 – Billy Liddell played his first reds game as we lost 1-0 to Preston North End in a friendly at Anfield that was billed as a “Grand Match”. 1992 – We lost 2-1 after extra time at Crystal Palace in a League Cup Fourth Round replay, with Mike Marsh bagging our goal from the spot as defender Nicky Tanner appeared for the 59th and last time. A Bridge too far 2001 - We were thumped 4-0 at Stamford Bridge by Chelsea, our hundredth Premier League defeat, despite many commentators naming Blues keeper Carlo Cudicini as their man of the match, with his saves including a penalty from Gary McAllister. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagged one of his seven strikes against the reds, with Graeme Le Saux, Sam Dalla Bona and Eiður Guðjohnsen all also on target. 1989 - We won 5-2 in west London with Ian Rush grabbing a brace against ex-red Bobby Campbell’s side. Our other goals came from Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon and Ray Houghton. Dave Beasant saved a penalty from Jan Mølby, while Houghton had a goal disallowed. Campbell said, “On this form Liverpool could win the World Cup!” Gordon Durie struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Kerry Dixon netting one of his seven past us. An away milestone 1899 - We played our hundredth away League game, going down 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground thanks to a late Arthur Capes strike, one of his four goals against the reds, with inside-forward Charlie Satterthwaite making his reds bow and keeper Harry Storer reaching a century of League appearances for us. 1893 - We also visited them at the then-named Town Ground, when Tom Bradshaw, Patrick Gordon and Malcolm McVean all struck as we won a friendly 3-0. 1922 - We also faced Forest, when Dick Johnson and Donald McKinlay netted as we won 2-1 at Anfield, with Bobby Parker bagging one of his eight goals against the reds. This was David Ashworth’s last game in charge as reds boss. Just eleven 2020 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield thanks to a last-gasp header from Roberto Firmino. Mohamed Salah and Heung-min Son were both on target before the break in front of just 2,000 fans, due to COVID restrictions, with Son’s goal being one of his seven past us to date. This was the first time in 908 games that the reds had used no substitutes since Gérard Houllier’s last game in charge in May 2004, with our former boss being remembered before kick-off following his recent death. This result left us three points ahead of the visitors at the top of the table. Jarell’s bow 2022 – Defender Jarell Quansah played his first reds game as we beat AC Milan 4-1 in the Dubai Super Cup, with Mohamed Salah and Thiago Alcântara on target in the first half. Darwin Núñez bagged a late brace, with the Italians then winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3 for a bonus point in the competition. Another away win 2006 - We won 3-0 at struggling Charlton Athletic, only our second away victory in the League to date that season but our sixth straight clean sheet in the League. We had to wait until the final ten minutes to add to a Xabi Alonso penalty, given away by ex-red Djimi Traoré, when Craig Bellamy and Steven Gerrard, in his 250th League outing, made the scoreline better reflect the game. A party at Gay Meadow 1986 - A testimonial match for short-lived reserves keeper Bob Wardle was played at Shrewsbury Town. Steve Nicol scored both our goals in a 2-0 win. A Welsh foursome 1944 - Future reds boss Don Welsh scored four goals, including a penalty, as we thumped Tranmere Rovers 5-1 at Prenton Park in a Wartime League game. Jackie Campbell bagged the other. Mixed fortunes against the Blades 1905 - Jack Cox was on target as we won 2-1 at Sheffield United as right-half Maurice Parry bagged his fourth and last reds goal. 1911 - We returned to Bramall Lane for another First Division match, with Jack Parkinson grabbing our late consolation in a 3-1 defeat as inside-left Ronald Orr played his 112th and last game for the club. No luck against Citeh We have twice faced Manchester City in the top flight on this day in history, failing to claim all the points on either occasion. 1933 - Berry Nieuwenhuys struck early on as we lost 2-1 at Maine Road, with South African-born forward Lance Carr making his reds bow. Alex Herd struck one of his eight goals against the reds, with Fred Tilson bagging one of his six past us. 1967 - Roger Hunt was on the scoresheet while skippering the side for the first time as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Franny Lee netting one of his six goals past us. Hunt and Tommy Lawrence had both separately been stuck in traffic getting to the match, whose start had to be delayed, leading to a hefty fine for the club. Both players eventually abandoned their cars and ran to the ground to try to make kick-off! All in red 1964 - Roger Hunt bagged the only goal of the game in the last minute as we won a European Cup tie at Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht, to reach the last eight by 4-0 on aggregate. This was the first time we had worn an all-red strip of shorts, shorts and socks. We progressed as far as the Semi-final in our first ever season in European competition, where we lost to Internazionale in controversial circumstances. Other defeats 1978 - We lost 1-0 at Bristol City with the only goal being scored by former Blue Joe Royle, the last of his five against the reds. Ex-red Peter Cormack also played for the home side. 1950 – We were thumped 4-1 at Anfield by Wolverhampton Wanderers with Billy Liddell netting our consolation from the spot, his fiftieth League goal for the reds. This was our biggest home defeat for four years as Johnny Walker nabbed a brace, with Roy Swinbourne netting one of his five goals against the reds, and Dennis Wilshaw scoring one of his seven past us. Happy birthdays 1897 - Forward Peter McKinney was born in Consett, County Durham. He struck once in three reds appearances, all in 1920/21, and later emigrated to the USA to join New York Giants. 1974 - Phil Neal’s son Ashley was born in Liverpool. He was a defender on our books in the early 1990’s before moving to Huddersfield Town in December 1996. 1985 - Ex-reserves forward Ramon Calliste was born in Cardiff. The former Welsh Under-21’s international joined the club in the summer of 2005 after being released by Manchester United, and top-scored with seven goals for the second string. He moved on to Sc***horpe United in July 2006 but was released at the end of that season, having also failed to break into their first team. 1929 - Noel White was born in Altrincham. He became a club Director in 1986, remaining on the board for two decades, including a year as Chairman. Other reds games 1972 – Steve Heighway netted as we drew 1-1 at Ipswich Town. 1961 – We beat Bristol Rovers 2-0 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield thanks to goals from Ian St. John and Roger Hunt. Royal manoeuvres 2014 – Former reds First Team Coach Steve Clarke was appointed Manager of Reading. He lasted a year in the job before being sacked. 2009 - Brendan Rodgers left as Manager of the Royals by mutual consent, having been in charge for just six months after guiding them to only six victories in 23 games in charge. Other management moves 2008 – Paul Ince was sacked as Manager of Blackburn Rovers, having led them to just six victories in his 21 fixtures in charge. 1976 - 1950’s wing-half Bobby Campbell was appointed Manager of Fulham. He was in charge for nearly four years, keeping them in the Second Division until they were relegated in 1980. 1999 - Mark Wright was named Southport boss. He led them up from 21st to ninth place in the Conference in his first season, and to fourth in the following campaign before moving to Oxford United. Award winners 2013 - Luis Suárez was presented with William Hill Football Supporters’ Federation Player of the Year award at the Emirates Stadium. 2019 - Virgil van Dijk was named as the Football Supporters' Association Men's Player of the Year. Brucie on the move again 1997 - Bruce Grobbelaar signed for Second Division Oldham Athletic on non-contract terms. He made four appearances, keeping three clean sheets, before moving to Chesham United at the end of the season. On the same day, future red Harry Kewell played for Australia as they lost 1-0 to host nation Saudi Arabia in a Confederations Cup group game. In international action 1975 – Future red Alan Hansen played for Scotland Under-23’s as they beat Romania in a European Championships game in Falkirk. 1987 – Ex-red Avi Cohen featured in Israel’s 2-0 friendly defeat by Switzerland in Tel-Aviv. 1992 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played in Brazil’s 3-1 defeat of Germany in Porto Alegre. 2002 – Roy Hodgson managed the United Arab Emirates as they lost a friendly 2-1 to Egypt in Abu Dhabi. 2015 - Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-17’s as they beat Italy 2-1 in a friendly in Alès. -
Stanley’s treble 1996 - Stan Collymore scored a treble as we thumped Third Division Rochdale 7-0 at Anfield in our Third Round meeting, our only senior encounter to date. Substitute Ian Rush scored his 39th and final FA Cup goal for the reds, breaking Denis Law’s record with his 42nd in total. Jason McAteer grabbed his first reds goal with Robbie Fowler also getting on the scoresheet, to add to a Peter Valentine own goal as we progressed to the Final that year. Truth day 2007 - We lost 3-1 at home to Arsenal in the Third Round of the FA Cup, with the Kop staging an emotional protest at the start of the game against Kelvin Mackenzie and in support of the 96 who lost their lives at Hillsborough in 1989. Dirk Kuyt grabbed our goal after Tomáš Rosický had bagged a brace, with Thierry Henry rounding out the scoring with the last of his nine goals past us. Double trouble 2013 – Daniel Sturridge scored on his reds bow as we won 2-1 at Blue Square Bet Premier side Mansfield Town in the FA Cup Third Round, with Luis Suárez netting the winner with the inadvertent use of an arm, so getting on the scoresheet in a third consecutive reds game. Matt Green nabbed a late consolation for the Stags. Double off the mark 2012 - Stewart Downing and Jonjo Shelvey both struck their first goals for the club as we thumped Oldham Athletic 5-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield on our way to Wembley. Robbie Simpson put the visitors ahead, but Craig Bellamy equalised before Steven Gerrard converted a penalty on the stroke of time. Birthday boy Andy Carroll was also on target. More hat-tricks 1968 - Roger Hunt scored a 22-minute second-half treble as we beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1 in a League game at Anfield after Geoff Strong had opened the scoring. Bobby Hope had hit the bar with a Baggies penalty, but the referee ordered a re-take because Tommy Lawrence had moved off his line. Tony Brown scored from the second kick to level the game with one of his eight strikes past the reds. 1992 - John Barnes bagged a treble on his comeback from a five-month injury lay-off, including a last-minute penalty, as we won 4-0 at Rob Jones’ former club Crewe Alexandra in an FA Cup Third Round tie as we set off towards Wembley glory. This remains our most recent FA Cup hat-trick away from home, with Steve McManaman opening the scoring. This was one of just two victories we enjoyed in our green and white Adidas away kit. Carroll’s day 1989 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll was born in Gateshead. He signed from Newcastle United for a club record £35m on transfer deadline day in January 2011 after 33 goals in 91 games for his boyhood club, including one in their 3-1 defeat of the reds at St. James’ Park in December 2010. He struck eleven times in 58 reds games, moving to West Ham United for their club record £15.5m fee in June 2013 after spending the previous season on loan at Upton Park. 1998 – Keeper Shamal George was born in Wirral. He joined the reds in 2009, making his first appearance for the first-team in our friendly win at Huddersfield Town in July 2016, as an outfield player! He moved on to Colchester United in August 2020. 1940 – Welsh full-back Allan Jones was born in Flint. He signed as an amateur in April 1955, turning professional two years later. He played five times before moving to Brentford in August 1963. 1876 – Inside-right Andrew McCowie was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896, netting eleven times in 35 games before joining Woolwich Arsenal in May 1899. In and out 2016 – Midfielder Marko Grujić signed from Crvena Zvezda for £5.1m and then was immediately loaned back. After arriving permanently that summer, he netted once in sixteen senior appearances, moving on to Porto permanently in July 2021 after a loan spell. On the same day, Luis Suárez was voted fifth in the Ballon d’Or, with fellow ex-red Javier Mascherano coming in fourteenth as Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the trophy. Held by the Hatters 2008 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at League One side Luton Town, with a John Arne Riise own goal cancelling out a Peter Crouch strike. We comfortably won the replay, but were then eliminated from the FA Cup at home by Barnsley at the Fifth Round stage. Off at the double 1912 - William Stuart scored his only reds goal on his debut as we won 3-2 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground. John Bovill struck his seventh and final reds goal in this game, with Jack Parkinson also on target as George Wynn nabbed a brace for the home side. Danny the champion 2008 - Centre-back Daniel Agger was named Denmark’s Footballer of the Year. He had played just 27 times for the reds in 2007, including the Champions League Final in Athens. Le debutant 2001 - Grégory Vignal made his reds bow as we beat Second Division Rotherham United 3-0 at home in an FA Cup Third Round encounter. Emile Heskey bagged a brace, to go with a rare Dietmar Hamann strike. Igor Bišcan was sent off as we began another Cup-winning run. Live on the Beeb 1984 - The first FA Cup tie outside the Final to be screened live in the UK was shown by the BBC on a Friday evening. Ian Rush netted a brace as we beat a Newcastle United side that included ex-reds Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott 4-0 in the Third Round, with Michael Robinson and Craig Johnston also on target. However, we lost at Brighton & Hove Albion in the next round. Cup disappointment 1951 - We lost 3-1 at Norwich City, our first defeat in the FA Cup Third Round since we had also been knocked out by the Canaries fourteen years earlier. Tom Docherty netted twice, with Noel Kinsey also on target for the home side. Jack Balmer bagged our late consolation. Reds deaths 1989 – Keeper Dave Underwood died. He signed from Watford for £7,000 in December 1953, playing fifty reds games before returning to Vicarage Road in July 1956. 2004 – Forward John Evans died. He was signed at the fourth attempt from Charlton Athletic in December 1953 for £12,500, but we suffered relegation in his first season at Anfield. His greatest moment with the reds came when he netted all our goals in a 5-3 defeat of Bristol Rovers in September 1954. Overall, he struck 53 times in 107 reds games before joining Colchester United in December 1957. 2005 - The funeral of post-war left-back Eddie Spicer took place at St Cwyfan's Church, Llangwyfan, near Denbigh. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title as well as playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. Wartime goalscoring feats 1918 - Thomas Bennett scored in his fifth consecutive game as we beat Preston North End 3-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League fixture, grabbing a brace with right-half John Bamber also on target. 1940 - Billy Liddell bagged a treble as we won 7-3 at Manchester City, with Willie Fagan and Berry Nieuwenhuys scoring twice apiece. Beating the Blues We have twice seen off Chelsea at Anfield on this day in history. 1923 - Billy Lacey struck the only goal of our top-flight encounter late on, his 29th and last reds goal. Forward Jack Sambrook appeared for the second and final time. 1962 - We won an FA Cup Third Round meeting by the odd goal in seven, with Ian St. John netting twice and Roger Hunt and Alan A’Court also on the scoresheet, as we led 4-1 at the break. We were eventually knocked out by Preston North End in the Fifth Round. Bobby Tambling bagged the first two of his eight goals past us, with Barry Bridges also on target for the Londoners. Reds in charge 1993 - Ex-red Richard Money took over as boss of Sc***horpe United, having previously held the role in a Caretaker capacity while an Iron player. He led them to mid-table in the Fourth Division that season, and again the following year before he left that summer. 2009 – Nigel Clough was appointed Manager of Derby County, as a replacement for Jewell. He remained in charge until being sacked in September 2013. 1998 - Former reserves forward Paul Jewell was appointed Manager of Bradford City. He led them into the Premiership in his first full season, before resigning after keeping them up the following year. 2015 – Jewell was named Joint Assistant Manager of West Bromwich Albion. However, he quit just seven days later after being asked to take a pay cut. On the move 1995 - Ex-reserves winger John Jeffers joined Second Division Shrewsbury Town on loan from Port Vale. He played five games for the Shrews, netting once. 2011 – Keeper Tony Warner signed for Tranmere Rovers, playing 25 times until the end of that season. Fagan for the Scots 1945 - Willie Fagan scored for a Scottish Services XI as they drew 2-2 with Belgium in Brussels. Fellow reds Jim Harley and Billy Liddell both also played. A big win 1894 - We won 4-1 at Rotherham Town in our first game on this day in history. James Stott grabbed a brace with Hugh McQueen and David Henderson also scoring as we conceded our first goal following six consecutive clean sheets, scored by Frank Turner Jr. Other reds games 1990 – Swansea City held us to a goalless draw in our FA Cup Third Round meeting at Vetch Field, trouncing them 8-0 in the Anfield replay, making it as far as the Semi-final that season. 1973 – Kevin Keegan headed in the only goal of our trip to West Ham United. 1934 – We drew 2-2 at Sheffield United, with Bert Oswald putting the Blades in front before Syd Roberts and Alf Hanson struck. Jack Pickering equalised late on with the last of his five goals past us. 1906 – We shared a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers. 1900 – We lost 1-0 at Sunderland. Career extremes 2007 – Joe Allen signed as a professional for Swansea City, having been part of their youth set-up since the age of nine. He struck seven goals in 150 first-team appearances for the Swans before arriving at Anfield for £15m in August 2012. 2010 - Patrik Berger announced his retirement from football due to persistent knee injuries. He struck 35 times in 196 reds games after his £3.25m capture from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund following a successful Euro ‘96 with the Czech Republic, and finished his career back with his first club, Sparta Praha.
