Ged in charge 1998 - Gérard Houllier took over as sole Manager, with Roy Evans leaving after four years in the hot-seat. Facing Spurs 2008 – We lost 4-2 at holders Tottenham Hotspur in a Carling Cup Fourth Round tie following a fairly dismal defensive performance. Right-back Stephen Darby made his reds bow while Damien Plessis bagged his only goal for the club, with Sami Hyypiä also on target. Roman Pavlyuchenko and Fraizer Campbell each struck twice for the home side. 1983 - We were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw at White Hart Lane with Michael Robinson and Ian Rush on target. Milly’s milestone 2022 – James Milner played his 600th Premier League game for any club in our 3-1 defeat of Southampton at Anfield as Nathan Jones took charge of the Saints for the first time. Roberto Firmino headed us into an early lead, but Che Adams swiftly levelled. Darwin Núñez bagged a brace before the break to secure the victory. Most recently 2023 – We beat Brentford 3-0 in the League at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah on target either side of the break, before Diogo Jota completed the scoring. Swiss-rolled over 2002 - We drew 3-3 at Basel to crash out of the Champions League at the first group stage. The reds had gone in at the half-time break 3-0 down, but fought back with goals from Danny Murphy, Vladimír Šmicer and Michael Owen, scoring the rebound from his own saved spot-kick, although it was not quite enough. Tommy’s treble 1927 - Tommy Reid bagged a hat-trick in our 5-2 top-flight win over The Wednesday at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson adding a brace. Beating PNE We have twice beaten Preston North End in First Division meetings at Anfield on this day in history. 1898 - Hugh Morgan netted twice as we won 3-1 with George Allan also on the scoresheet. 1910 - Ronald Orr, Jack Parkinson and Sam Bowyer were all on target as we won 3-0, Tom Watson’s 500th League game in charge of the reds. Derby spoils shared 1921 - Dick Forshaw struck as Everton held us to a top-flight draw at Anfield in a game that also counted towards the Lancashire Senior Cup. European defeat 1969 - We lost 1-0 in the first leg of our Fairs Cup Second Round tie to Portuguese side Vitória de Setúbal. We won the second leg 3-2, going out on the away goals rule. Knocked out 1974 - Our first League Cup encounter with Middlesbrough ended in a 1-0 defeat in the Fourth Round at Anfield, with Willie Maddren netting in injury time, shortly after Alec Lindsay had his penalty saved by keeper Jim Platt. This came after we had seen off basement side Brentford and Second Division Bristol City. In charge 2004 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Wales for the second time. He led them to 21 victories in 53 games in charge, before leaving by mutual consent in September 2010. 2001 - Academy Chief Scout Dave Moss was appointed Manager of Macclesfield Town, his only time in the hot seat. He led them to 33 victories in his 102 games in charge, leading them to mid-table finishes in consecutive seasons in the basement division before being sacked in October 2003. He joined the reds in February 2006. First and last caps 2020 – Keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili won his last Under-21’s cap before joining Valencia on loan from Dinamo Tbilisi as Georgia beat Slovakia 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Tbilisi. 2014 – Future red Roberto Firmino won his first senior cap for Brazil in their 4-0 win in Turkey, with Philippe Coutinho also in action. On the same day, Divock Origi netted for Belgium as they beat Iceland 3-1 in another friendly in Brussels, with Harry Wilson on target for Wales Under-19’s and Lloyd Jones winning his fourth and last England Under-20’s cap. Jordon Ibe, future reds Christian Benteke, Diogo Jota and Gini Wijnaldum, and ex-red Javier Mascherano also represented their countries that day. 2015 – Future red Dominic Solanke played for England Under-21’s for the first time as they were held to a goalless draw in their European Championships qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo. Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa made his bow at the same level as Italy beat the Czech Republic 4-1 in a friendly in Pistoia. 2003 - Reds youngster Ryan Wilkie made his debut for Scotland Under-18’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Germany in Herzlake. 1986 - Jim Beglin won his fifteenth and final cap for the Republic of Ireland as they lost 1-0 in a friendly in Poland. John Aldridge was making his seventh and final appearance as an Oxford United player, while future red Ray Houghton and ex-red Kevin Sheedy both also played. Up against the Gunners 1938 - We met Arsenal at Anfield with Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbing a brace in a 2-2 top-flight draw. His hat-trick consisted of a header, right-foot and left-foot strikes. The other Spanish goal came from future red Fernando Torres who was on target in his third consecutive international. Ex-red Michael Owen grabbed a brace in England’s 3-2 friendly defeat of Argentina in Geneva, with Peter Crouch changing the game as a substitute, Paul Konchesky winning his second and final cap and only one as a West Ham United player, and Steven Gerrard and future reds Joe Cole and Maxi Rodríguez also featuring. Dudek for the Pope 2003 - Jerzy Dudek played for Poland as they beat Italy 3-1 in a friendly match played in Warsaw to commemorate Pope John Paul II’s silver jubilee. 1997 – Future red Gary McAllister skippered Scotland as they won a friendly 2-1 in France. 2020 – Andy Robertson captained Steve Clarke’s Scotland as they beat Serbia on penalties after their European Championships qualifier ended 1-1, sending them through to the Finals the following year. Happy birthday Willie 1939 - Left-half Willie Stevenson was born in Leith. He signed from Rangers for £20,000 in October 1962 and missed just nine League games in his first four seasons, making a total of 241 appearances and netting eighteen times. He helped us to two League titles and our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 before moving on to Stoke City in December 1967. A win at the Bridge 2008 - Xabi Alonso’s deflected strike was the only goal of our trip to Stamford Bridge, handing Chelsea their first home League defeat since February 2004, ending an 86-game unbeaten run. Alonso also hit the post with a second-half free-kick. Ton up for Didi 2002 - Dietmar Hamann played his hundredth reds League game as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield, with Jamie Redknapp making his first appearance back at Anfield since his transfer. Danny Murphy scored a beautifully curled shot, before Michael Owen’s penalty restored our lead following Dean Richards’ equaliser. Luis at the treble 2013 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick, his first at Anfield, as we thumped West Bromwich Albion 4-1, with James Morrison pulling one back from the spot before Daniel Sturridge completed the scoring. Reds firsts 2023 – Diogo Jota opened the scoring of our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield against Toulouse, but Thijs Dallinga soon levelled. Wataru Endō scored his first goal for the club with Darwin Núñez also on target before the break. Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah struck in the second half to complete a 5-1 win as midfielder James McConnell and left-back Calum Scanlon coming off the bench to make their senior bows. On the same day, Robbie Fowler was sacked as Saudi Arabian Manager of Al-Qadsiah, despite leading them to six wins and two draws in his eight games in charge. Also recently 2022 – Alison Becker played his 200th reds game as we won a UEFA Champions League group game 3-0 at Ajax, with left-back Andy Robertson reaching a half century of European appearances for the club. Mohamed Salah struck before the break, with Darwin Núñez heading in before Harvey Elliott completed the scoring as we secured our place in the knock-out phase. Heading towards Wembley 2011 – We won our League Cup Fourth Round tie 2-1 at Stoke City. Kenwyne Jones struck just before half-time, with Luis Suárez bagging a brace after the break. Into the Lions’ den 2004 - We won 3-0 at Millwall in a Third Round Carling Cup match as we headed towards a record tenth Final in the competition on our first visit to The New Den. Jerzy Dudek skippered the reds for the first time, while future Lion Zak Whitbread was making his reds bow. Salif Diao netted his third and final reds goal in the first half, with Milan Baroš adding a brace. Unfortunately, the game was marred by sick chants from the home fans that led to confrontations between the two sets of supporters. A rarity for Sami 2000 - Sami Hyypiä sat on the reds bench for the only time in his first five seasons at Anfield as a late Emile Heskey goal handed us victory over Czech side Slovan Liberec at Anfield in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Second Round tie. Robbie Fowler spurned a number of good chances, including a penalty. Sami did not reappear on the bench until March 2005. Robbie’s poor form could be partly explained by the fact that his future wife Kerrie had given birth to their second daughter, Jaya, earlier that day. A blooming treble 1912 - Rams legend Steve Bloomer bagged a hat-trick as we lost 4-2 to Derby County at the Baseball Ground, the last of his fourteen strikes past us. Arthur Metcalf netted both our goals, with Harry Leonard also on target for the home side. 1977 - We also faced the Rams when a David Fairclough brace handed us a 2-0 League Cup Third Round victory at Anfield. 1927 – Outside-left Fred Hopkin scored a hat-trick as we won a Lancashire Senior Cup game 5-2 at Southport, with Gordon Hodgson and Tom Reid also netting. Taking the Heighway again 1974 - Steve Heighway grabbed the only goal of our home League meeting with Leeds United for the second successive season, with each goal coming mid-way through the second half of the game. Leeds were at this time the reigning champions. First and last 1895 – Half-back Bill Keech played the first of his six reds games as we beat Notts County 3-0 at Anfield on the way to the Second Division title. Fred Geary and Jimmy Ross added to an early headed goal from Harry Bradshaw. 1907 – Harold Fitzpatrick struck his second and final reds goal as we beat The Wednesday 3-0 at Anfield, with brothers Joe and Charlie Hewitt both also netting. International firsts and last 1985 - Future red Ronnie Rosenthal started his first senior international while winning his eighth cap as Israel lost 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier in New Zealand. Ex-red Avi Cohen also played. 2012 – Jerome Sinclair won his fifth and last cap for England Under-17’s, with Sheyi Ojo also playing in their 3-2 European Championships qualifying defeat of Northern Ireland in Estonia. 2013 – Sheyi Ojo scored his only goal for England Under-17’s as they beat Gibraltar 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Armenia, with future red Dominic Solanke bagging a brace. Corey Whelan featured for the Irish Under-17’s on the same day. On target 2007 – David N’Gog netted as France Under-19’s drew a friendly 2-2 with Greece. Stalemates with the Trotters We have twice drawn with Bolton Wanderers on this day in history. 1901 - Andy McGuigan was on target in a First Division fixture at Anfield 1918 - Thomas Bennett and Donald McKinlay netted at Burnden Park as we travelled for a Wartime League match. Thumped at home 1929 - Jim Smith grabbed our consolation as early as the first minute as Manchester City thrashed us 6-1 at Anfield in a First Division meeting. This remains City’s biggest ever win on our home turf, with Eric Brook scoring the first two of his nine goals past us, Tommy Johnson scoring two of his eight and Tommy Tait bagging the first two of his four goals against the reds. Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his 300th reds appearance in this game. 2,000 up 2004 - We hosted our 2,000th League game, with West Bromwich Albion on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat. Steve Finnan scored his only reds goal while Luis García bagged the first of his thirty strikes, after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring. Doss debuts 1981 - Italian left-back Andrea Dossena was born in Lodi. He signed from Udinese for £7m in July 2008 in a four-year deal. He made 31 appearances, saving his two goals for the same week, first at home to Real Madrid and then at Manchester United. He left Anfield to sign for SSC Napoli for €4.25m in January 2010. A nightmare for Carra 1999 - Jamie Carragher scored two own goals to help us to a 3-2 defeat at home to deadly rivals Manchester United, despite goalscorer Andrew Cole’s late sending off, in front of our record home Premier League attendance of 44,929. Sami Hyypiä struck his first reds goal with Patrik Berger also on target for the reds. Cole had struck one of his eleven goals past us. Hat-tricks for 1926 - Gordon Hodgson scored the first of his seventeen reds hat-tricks in our 5-1 First Division defeat of Sheffield United, with Dick Forshaw netting a brace, including a penalty. Harry Johnson struck one of his seven goals against the reds. 1943 - Arthur Shepherd netted an incredible six goals as we trounced Wrexham 8-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Jack Balmer and Alf Hanson were also on target. A unique treble 1982 - We scored against three different Luton Town goalkeepers at Anfield – regular custodian Jake Findlay, right-back Kirk Stephens and Mal Donaghy. Findlay tore a muscle and had to be replaced before the break, with two different outfield players taking a turn between the sticks. Unfortunately, we could only draw 3-3, with Graeme Souness, Ian Rush and Craig Johnston on target. Current Academy Chief Scout Dave Moss was amongst the scorers, with Brian Stein bagging a brace, the first two of his four goals past us. Into the Champions League 2001 - We played our first ever game in the UEFA Champions League proper as we were held 1-1 at Anfield by Boavista, on the day of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington DC. Michael Owen equalised after Elpidio Silva had put the Portuguese champions ahead, who had seven players booked, while Steven Gerrard played his hundredth reds game. Berry picked 1933 – South African outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys signed from Germiston Callies. He struck 79 times in 257 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining Arsenal later that year. 1963 – Forward John Sealey signed as an amateur from Warrington Town for £25. He scored as he played his only reds game when the full first team was rested before the 1965 FA Cup Final. He moved on to Chester in June 1966. Yet another 2-2 2002 - We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by newly-promoted Birmingham City. This was the first time in 39 years that we had drawn three consecutive League games 2-2. Danny Murphy and Steven Gerrard put us two goals ahead, before City hit back through a pair of late Clinton Morrison goals, two of his four strikes against the reds. Debuting on the flank 1948 - Right-winger Jimmy Payne made his reds bow in our 1-0 home defeat by Bolton Wanderers. He went on to make 243 reds appearances, grabbing 43 goals. Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made a total of 249 first-team appearances, notching 44 times, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. Two-ton Rushie 1987 - Ian Rush bagged his 200th and 201st reds goals as we beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1, with ex-red Sammy Lee in the visitors’ side. 1967 – We lost 1-0 at Burnley with Les Latcham bagging a fortuitous late winner as Tommy Smith reached a century of League appearances for the reds. Skipper once again 2010 – Steven Gerrard captained the reds for the 300th time as we beat Lille OSC Métropole 3-0 in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie at Anfield, so overcoming a 1-0 first leg deficit. Unhappy millennium 1922 - We lost 2-0 at home to Bolton Wanderers in a top-flight encounter that was our thousandth first-class fixture, with William Cunningham playing his third and final reds game as keeper Elisha Scott reached a century of reds outings. Joe Smith netted one of his twelve goals past us with David Jack nabbing one of his nine in a match that also counted for Section 2 of the Lancashire Senior Cup. European memories 1981 - We won 1-0 at CSKA Sofia in the second leg of our European Cup Third Round tie, with David Johnson on target after Sammy Lee had hit the post to send us through 6-1 on aggregate. Ray Clemence saved a penalty from Plamen Markov with ten minutes to go after a Jimmy Case foul. The night was one of mixed fortunes for our scorer, as Johnson pulled a hamstring, and had to be replaced by Steve Heighway before half time. 1992 - Less happily, we crashed out of the UEFA Cup at the Fourth Round stage, losing 2-1 to Genoa at Anfield to bow out 4-1 overall. Ian Rush bagged our goal with Mark Wright being taken off with a torn hamstring after just seventeen minutes. Uruguayan forward Carlos Aguileira struck both the visitors’ goals. Ronnie at the wrong end 1990 - Ronnie Whelan scored a late own goal at Old Trafford, although we still beat Manchester United 2-1 on the way to our most recent League title. John Barnes bagged both our goals, with one coming from the spot, his fiftieth reds goal. 1916 - We also took a trip down the East Lancs. Road with our Wartime League fixture ending goalless. Thumping the Geordies 1972 - We trounced Newcastle United 5-0 at Anfield with Chris Lawler, Kevin Keegan, John Toshack, Emlyn Hughes and Steve Heighway all netting. Tom’s last 1893 – We defeated South Shore 4-1 in a Lancashire League game at Anfield with John Miller on target twice. Malcolm McVean also scored with outside-right Tom Wyllie bagging his fifteenth and last goal for the club. To Elland back 1933 - Leeds United recorded their best ever win over the reds, thumping us 5-0 at Elland Road, to complete a League double. Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw put through his own net, with Jack Mahon bagging the first two of his four goals against the reds, Arthur Hydes scoring the first of his four past us and Harry Duggan bagging one of his five. 1936 - We beat the Yorkshire side 2-1 at Anfield, with Fred Howe and Phil Taylor on target. Arthur Riley saved a penalty from the visitors’ Jack Milburn, with George Brown netting the last of his nine strikes against us. Representative honours 1895 – Forward Gerald Dewhurst won his only England cap as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in the British International Championships at Queen’s Club in London. He was a Liverpool Ramblers player at the time and had played one reds game as a guest from Corinthians in March 1894. 1964 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt played for the Football League as they drew 2-2 with a Scottish League side at Roker Park. Other reds games 1961 – We were beaten 2-0 in a Second Division trip to Swansea Town. 1950 – Wolverhampton Wanderers won 2-0 at Anfield with Jim Hanc***s scoring in the first half. Roy Swinbourne struck the first of his five goals past us after the break. 1939 – We lost 2-0 at Arsenal with Alf Kirchen grabbing the last of his four goals against the reds and Ted Drake netting the final one of his six. 1914 – We beat Chelsea 3-0 in L4. Billy Banks bagged a brace with Tom Miller also on target, with all the goals coming in the second half. Loan moves 2000 - Former reserves forward Sean Friars joined Portadown on loan from Ipswich Town. He returned to Portman Road two months later, where he continued to fail to break through. 2005 - Former second-string defender Andrew Nicholas joined Chester City on loan from Swindon Town. He played five League Two games in his spell with the Blues. Also in international action 1901 – Maurice Parry played for Wales as they lost 6-0 to England in the British International Championships in Newcastle. 1907 – Sam Hardy’s England faced George Latham’s Wales in a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage. 1911 – Ex-red Billy Lacey featured as Ireland lost 2-0 to Scotland in Glasgow. 1992 – Lee Jones featured for Wales B as they lost 1-0 to a Canada Olympic XI in Wrexham. 2016 – Ben Woodburn played for Wales Under-17’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to Portugal in Croatia.
