Ian Rush and John Wark both netted braces with the other goals coming from Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol, while Rush also struck the post twice. Both managers played in this game, with Kenny Dalglish lining up against the Cottagers’ new player/manager Ray Lewington. 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged four in our 5-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, his hundredth reds game, with Steve Harkness nabbing our other goal late on. 1939 - We also entertained the Trotters, with Jack Balmer bagging a brace and Matt Busby also on target in a 3-0 friendly victory. Jonjo off 2012 - We lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Anfield, with Jonjo Shelvey somewhat harshly dismissed in the first half, and Fabio Borini having to go off injured at half-time. Steven Gerrard put us ahead straight after the break, but Rafael da Silva equalised before Robin van Persie converted a late, soft penalty to secure victory, one of his seven goals past us. Martin Kelly suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in this game. The first Irish red 1970 - Steve Heighway became the first ever red to represent the Republic of Ireland in their 2-0 friendly defeat at home to Poland, winning the first of his 33 caps less than a month after his senior reds debut. 1992 - Torben Piechnik won his first cap as a reds player, and tenth to date, as Denmark were held to a goalless draw by Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier in Vilnius. Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his twentieth cap on the same day as Norway beat the Netherlands in another qualifier in Oslo. Reds sold 1993 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper left Anfield after 73 reds games to join Newcastle United for £550,000. He made thirty appearances for the Toon before retiring from the game. 1982 – Forward Colin Russell moved on to Huddersfield Town. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. 1920 - Scottish international centre-forward Tom Miller was sold to Manchester United for £2,000, after 56 goals in 146 reds games, including appearing in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. He had been suspended for his part in the 1915 match-fixing scandal involving the reds and the Old Trafford side. Debutants galore 2008 – Keeper Diego Cavalieri and right-back Philipp Degen both made their reds debuts as we beat Crewe Alexandra 2-1 in a League Cup Third Round tie at Anfield, the hundredth game we had played in the competition on home turf, although one came as the ‘away’ side. Unfortunately, Degen suffered two broken ribs during the match. Daniel Agger opened the scoring before Michael O’Connor equalised. Lucas Leiva struck the winner. 1899 - Forward John Parkinson made his only reds appearance in our 2-1 home derby defeat, with Tom Robertson netting our consolation. Jack Taylor bagged one of his five goals past us, with Jimmy Settle netting one of his eleven. 1905 - Left-half Jim Bradley made his reds bow in our 2-0 win over Birmingham City at Anfield, when Robbie Robinson and Joe Hewitt were on target. 1933 - South African outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys made his debut in our 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur. Sam English nabbed a brace with Alf Hanson also on the scoresheet. 1950 - Centre-half Joe Cadden made his reds bow in our 2-1 defeat at Fulham, with Billy Liddell netting. 1957 - Winger Johnny Morrissey debuted in our 2-1 win at Stoke City, with Louis Bimpson and Tony Rowley grabbing the goals, and Geoff Twentyman putting through his own net. Mo again 2017 – Mohamed Salah scored in his third consecutive game as we won 3-2 in the League at Leicester City, just four days after being knocked out of the League Cup at the same venue. Philippe Coutinho also scored before Shinji Okazaki pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time. Jordan Henderson restored our two-goal advantage, but Jamie Vardy responded immediately with the sixth of his ten goals past us to date. Simon Mignolet then saved a Vardy spot-kick to ensure victory. Penalties galore 2014 – After a 2-2 draw, our League Cup Third Round tie with Middlesbrough at Anfield resulted in a 14-13 win on penalties, a club, competition and joint English professional record, with even keeper Simon Mignolet amongst the scorers. Midfielder Jordan Rossiter opened the scoring on his debut, with Jordan Williams making his only senior appearance. Adam Reach levelled to send the game into extra time before Suso struck his only goal in his last game for the club. However, Patrick Bamford converted a stoppage time spot kick to send the match to a shoot-out. 2015 – We beat League Two side Carlisle United 3-2 on penalties after another Third Round tie ended 1-1 after extra time. Keeper Ádám Bogdán saved three of the spot kicks on his reds bow while centre-half Martin Škrtel played his 300th reds game. Danny Ings had given us the lead before Derek Asamoah equalised before half time. Happy birthday Fred 1895 - Outside-left Fred Hopkin was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. He netted twelve times in 360 reds games after signing from Manchester United for £2,800 in May 1921, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s before re-joining former club Darlington in August 1931. On the same day, a benefit match was held for Matt McQueen at Anfield. He played 105 times for the reds between 1892 and 1899, and later became a director, before managing the side for five years in the 1920’s. An England International XI beat the reds 3-0, with Sheffield United’s Harry Hammond bagging a treble. 1931 – Welsh international centre-forward Des Palmer was born in Swansea. He signed from his hometown club in March 1959, in a £15,000 deal with right-half Roy Saunders moving in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury on his reserves bow, moving on to Johannesburg Ramblers in 1960. 2005 – Right-back Josh Davidson was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in October 2022. First goal against 1893 - Centre-forward David Henderson scored on his reds debut as we beat Small Heath 3-1, as we conceded our first ever League goal in our fourth match, netted by Caesar Jenkyns, with Jimmy Stott grabbing a brace. Willie signs on 1931 – Scottish right-back Willie Steel signed from St. Johnstone for £1,000. He failed to score in 128 reds games before being sold to Birmingham City for £5,000 in March 1935. Derby wins We have twice beaten Everton in other games on this day in history. 1989 - Ian Rush netted a brace to reach 150 League goals for the reds after John Barnes had equalised as we won 3-1 at Goodison, with ex-reds reserve Mike Newell having put the Toffees in front with one of his eight strikes against the reds. 1967 - Roger Hunt grabbed the only goal of the game at Anfield. This was our 2,500th League game. Double century 2006 - Mark González struck our 200th League goal against Tottenham Hotspur after the ball came back off the post from a failed Craig Bellamy tap-in, before Dirk Kuyt and John Arne Riise netted to complete a 3-0 victory. Not bribed 1922 – Before our 3-0 home League defeat of Burnley, keeper Elisha Scott, centre-half Walter Wadsworth and centre-forward Dick Johnson had all been offered £10 to let the visitors win. However, they reported this attempt to the Club Secretary, which was later dismissed as a hoax by the police. Dick Forshaw bagged a brace, with Harry Chambers also on target as forward Billy Lacey made his 200th League appearance for the reds. All sung out 2000 - Rigobert Song played his 38th and final reds game as we were held 1-1 by Sunderland at Anfield. Robbie Fowler played his 200th League game, with Michael Owen bagging our equaliser after Kevin Phillips had netted for the visitors. Five three times We have won 5-0 at Anfield on three separate occasions on this day in history. 1980 - Sammy Lee struck twice with Kenny Dalglish and David Fairclough also on the scoresheet as we met Third Division Swindon Town in a League Cup Third Round tie, as we also benefited from a Glen Cockerill own goal. 1972 - Phil Boersma, Alec Lindsay, Steve Heighway and Peter Cormack netted against Sheffield United to take us to the top of the First Division, with Kevin Keegan converting a penalty immediately after Tommy Smith had one saved for the second consecutive game. 1961 - Jimmy Melia grabbed a brace while Ian St. John, Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis also struck as we beat Bury in a Second Division meeting, our record ever victory over the Shakers. 1907 – Bobby Robinson bagged the only goal of our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round meeting with Bury at Anfield as we progressed to the next round. Award winners 2019 - Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were both named in the FIFA FIFPRO Men’s World 11 at The Best FIFA Football Awards in Milan, with Alisson named as The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper and Jürgen Klopp as The Best FIFA Men’s Coach, following UEFA Champions League glory in Madrid. Management moves 1998 - Steve McMahon left as Swindon Town boss by mutual consent after 201 games in charge, during which they were relegated but immediately bounced back as Second Division champions. 2010 - Paul Dalglish left as Head Coach of Tampa Bay by mutual consent, after they had lost 3-0 to Montreal which knocked them out of a play-off spot. 2011 – Dean Saunders was appointed Manager of Doncaster Rovers. However, they were relegated from the Championship in his first season in charge. He remained in charge until January 2013 when he left to take over at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Internationals on target 2001 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both netted for the French Under-17’s in their 2-1 defeat of reigning champions Brazil in the World Championships Quarter-final, in The Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago. 2013 – Harry Wilson scored for Wales Under-17’s in their 5-5 European Championships qualifying draw with Hungary in Slovenia. 2022 – Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as Egypt beat Niger 3-0 in a friendly in Alexandria. Darwin Núñez won his first cap as a reds player as Uruguay lost 1-0 to Iran in Austria, with Luis Suárez appearing for the first time since re-joining Club Nacional de Football. Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling represented England for the first time since moving to Chelsea in their 1-0 UEFA Nations League defeat in Italy and Ryan Gravenberch won his first cap since moving to Bayern München as the Netherlands Under-21’s won a friendly 2-1 in Belgium. Also in international action were Alisson Becker, Bobby Clark, Fabinho, Trent Kone-Doherty, Sepp van den Berg, future reds Wataru Endō, Alexis Mac Allister, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Dominik Szoboszlai and ex-reds Péter Gulácsi and Liam Millar, with Rigobert Song taking charge of Cameroon and Bernard Diomède managing France Under-18’s. 2021 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty played for the Republic of Ireland Under-16’s in their goalless friendly in Malta. Disappointment against the Baggies We have twice faced West Bromwich Albion in the First Division on this day in history, and have yet to win. 1911 - Jack Parkinson was on target as we lost 3-1 at Anfield. 1978 - Kenny Dalglish netted an opportunist equaliser in our 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns. He hid behind keeper Tony Godden and poked the ball home when he rolled it out. These were our first dropped points of the season, in our seventh League match. Winger Laurie Cunningham had opened the scoring for the home side, while Ray Clemence was playing his 500th reds game. Olympian reds 2000 - Brad Friedel played as the USA drew 2-2 with Japan in the Olympics Quarter-final in Adelaide, and then won the resulting penalty shoot-out 5-4 after extra time. On the same day, future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil in their 2-1 defeat by Cameroon after extra time in Brisbane. Mighty Mouse ties the knot 1964 - Kevin Keegan married Jean at St. Peter-in-Chains Catholic Church in Doncaster. Finn off the mark 1995 - Future reds right-back Steve Finnan scored on his debut for Birmingham City as they drew 1-1 at Watford. Fame at last 2010 - Ian Callaghan, Ray Clemence and Kenny Dalglish were all inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame at Hilton Hotel, Manchester, with Kenny doing so as a Manager, having previously been enrolled as a player. Other reds game 1987 – We drew the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Steve Nicol struck our goal, but we fell to Everton at the next hurdle. On the move 2022 – Keeper David Martin re-signed for Milton Keynes Dons as a Player/Coach, his third spell with the club. He failed to make a senior appearance this time around, being released at the end of the campaign, 2011 – Reserves forward David Amoo joined Bury on loan. He bagged four goals in 28 outings for the Shakers. 1998 – Future reds goalkeeping coach John Achterberg joined Tranmere Rovers on a free transfer from PSV Eindhoven. He played 312 times on the Wirral, before moving to Melwood in June 2009. 1987 - Reserves centre-back Mark Seagraves signed for Manchester City for £100,000. He made just fifty appearances in three years at Maine Road before joining Bolton Wanderers. 1983 - Future red Peter Beardsley signed for Newcastle United from Vancouver Whitecaps for £150,000. He netted 61 in 163 games for the Toon, before moving to Anfield in July 1987. Other internationals in action 1987 – Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to Portugal in Solna. 1997 – Future red Vladimír Šmicer appeared as the Czech Republic won a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Malta. 1998 – Future red Fernando Morientes featured as Spain beat Russia 1-0 in a friendly in Granada. 2003 – Future red Daniel Agger played for Denmark Under-20’s in their 1-0 defeat in the Ukraine. 2006 - Michael Collins, Laurence Gaughan and Shane O’Connor all appeared for the Republic of Ireland Under-17’s as they held Denmark to a goalless draw in a European Championships qualifier in Azerbaijan. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played as Turkey Under-17’s beat Norway 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Lithuania.

Strikers on the move 1961 - Ian St. John signed from Motherwell for a club record £37,500. He went on to bag 118 goals in 425 reds games, helping us to two League titles, our first ever FA Cup, Second Division championship and FA Charity Shield before joining South African side Hellenic in February 1971. 1897 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker arrived from Leith Athletic. He struck three times in twelve reds games, returning to his former club for free in August 1898 1938 – Bill Kinghorn joined the reds from Queen’s Park. He netted four times in nineteen reds games, and another three times in eleven wartime matches. 1979 - Future red John Aldridge signed for Newport County from South Liverpool for £3,500. He netted 83 times in 198 games for County. Cally honoured 1974 - Ian Callaghan was named as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, surprisingly becoming the first red ever to win this honour since its launch in 1948. 2008 - Fernando Torres was voted runner-up in the same awards, with ex-red David James in third. Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo was the winner. Happy birthdays 1981 - Chris Kirkland was born in Leicester. He only appeared 45 times between our sticks after signing from Coventry City for £6m in August 2001, while suffering from a succession of injuries, and moved to Wigan Athletic in October 2006 for a reported £3.5m after a successful loan spell. 1904 - Outside-right Cyril Oxley was born in Worksop. He signed from Chesterfield for £2,000 in October 1925 and bagged six goals in 34 games before moving to Southend United in September 1928. 1997 – Midfielder Matty Virtue was born in Epsom. He was Under-23’s skipper, moving on to Blackpool in January 2019. Red farewells 2018 – Ragnar Klavan featured in his 53rd and last reds game as we lost the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final 4-2 at Roma, our first defeat in the competition that season, to progress 7-6 on aggregate. Sadio Mané and Gini Wijnaldum both scored inside the first half hour, either side of an unfortunate James Milner own goal. Edin Džeko gave the home side hope with the latest of his five goals past us before Radja Nainggolan added two late strikes, including a stoppage-time penalty. 2010 – Yossi Benayoun played his 134th and final reds game prior to joining the visitors as we meekly surrendered 2-0 to Chelsea at Anfield, thus helping to ensure they won the League title ahead of Manchester United and that we could not qualify for the following season’s Champions League. Didier Drogba pounced on a stray Steven Gerrard back-pass to open the scoring with one of his eleven goals past us, with Frank Lampard also on target with last of his eight. Daniel Ayala also made his final senior appearance, his fifth. 2004 - Danny Murphy scored his 44th and last reds goal, converting a spot-kick in a 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield, to continue his hundred per cent record at penalties for us, with his eighth successful conversion. Emile Heskey grabbed the other goal. 1956 – Don Welsh took charge of the reds for the last time as we lost our final game of the season 2-0 at Lincoln City to finish the season in third in the Second Division. 1925 – Full-back Ted Parry made his thirteenth and final reds appearance as we drew 1-1 at League champions Huddersfield Town, benefiting from a Tommy Wilson own goal as we finished the season in fourth. Five against the Hammers 1998 - We thumped West Ham United 5-0 at home in the Premiership. Michael Owen, Jason McAteer, with a brace that included his final reds goal, and Øyvind Leonhardsen all scored before the break, with ex-Hammer Paul Ince wrapping up the scoring in the second half to ensure our place in the UEFA Cup for the next season. 1931 - We also played the Hammers as Gordon Hodgson struck twice in our final game of the season to hand us a 2-0 win at Anfield, as we finished ninth in the top flight. This was the sixth consecutive game in which he had netted. The worst season ever 1955 - We finished the season with a 6-1 thumping at Rotherham United, ending up in our worst ever final League position, eleventh in the Second Division. The great Billy Liddell bagged our consolation with Ian Wilson netting four goals, with Jack Grainger and Dennis Pell also on target for the Millers. Champions! 1988 - We were presented with the League Championship trophy, along with the new Barclays trophy, before our 1-1 Bank Holiday Monday home draw with Southampton. John Aldridge put us in front just before half-time, with Rod Wallace equalising with the first of his five strikes against the reds. Also recently 2015 - Philippe Coutinho gave us a first-half lead over Queens Park Rangers before Leroy Fer equalised after the break. Nedum Onuoha was sent off for the visitors and Steven Gerrard had a penalty saved by Robert Green, although he went on to head in a late goal as we won 2-1 with Lazar Marković making his 34th and last reds appearance. 2021 – Our League visit to Manchester United, due to be played behind closed doors due to COVID restrictions, was called off before kick-off due to protests by the home fans against their owners. Colin for the only time 1981 - Forward Colin Russell played his only reds game as Sunderland won 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Stan Cummins goal. Future Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce played his final game for the visitors. A Tiny mistake 1936 - We lost 2-1 in our final game of the season as we finished nineteenth with Stoke City securing their joint highest ever League placing, ending up fourth in the top flight. Fred Howe netted for the reds with centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw putting through his own net and Jim Westland also on target for the home side. This was George Patterson’s last game in his second spell in charge of the reds. Injured 1992 – John Barnes had to limp off during our goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday with an injury that ruled him out of the FA Cup Final the following weekend. Danny stays 2009 – Centre-half Daniel Agger agreed a new contract until 2014, later further extended. He struck fourteen times in 232 reds games since signing from Brøndby IF for £5.8m in January 2006, before returning there for a reported £3m in August 2014. Reds against reds 1984 - Alan Kennedy and Sammy Lee faced Ian Rush in a British International Championships game at the Racecourse Ground. It was Barney’s second and final cap. Future red Mark Wright made his England debut, while his future clubmate Paul Walsh won his fifth and last cap. Ex-red Joey Jones also played as the home side won 1-0 thanks to a Mark Hughes goal. Future red Glenn Hysén and ex-red Dave Watson both also featured in internationals that day. First and last caps 1979 - John Toshack won his first cap as a Swansea City player, and 35th overall, in Wrexham, coming on as a substitute in their 2-0 defeat by West Germany in a European Championships qualifier. Fellow ex-red Joey Jones also played. 1989 – Øyvind Leonhardsen debuted for Norway Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to Poland, with fellow future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye also in action. 2004 - David Raven won his sixth and last cap for England Under-19's as they drew a European Championships qualifier with Ukraine 1-1 in Slovenia. Ins and out 2011 – Sami Hyypiä announced his retirement from playing, having bagged three goals in 61 outings for Bayer 04 Leverkusen after leaving Anfield two years earlier. On the same day, it was announced that Club Secretary Ian Silvester was to leave by mutual consent, having been in that role for two years. 1980 – Defender Richard Money arrived from Fulham for a £50,000 fee. However, he was unable to displace either Alan Kennedy or Phil Neal at full-back, making only seventeen first-team appearances before joining Luton Town in April 1982. 1908 – Scottish keeper Don Sloan signed from Everton for £300, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. 1896 – Scottish centre-half Robert Neill signed on loan from Hibernian, having joined on loan in April 1895. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. Also in international action 1956 – Future reds keeper Tommy Younger played for Scotland in their 1-1 friendly draw with Austria at Hampden Park. 1962 – Ian St. John featured as Scotland lost 3-2 to Uruguay at the same venue. 1978 – Future reds coach Joe Corrigan played for England Under-21’s as they drew the second leg of their European Championships Semi-final 1-1 with Yugoslavia at Maine Road, losing out 3-2 on aggregate. 2002 – Carl Medjani captained France Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to fellow future red Arnaud Bühler’s Switzerland in a European Championships Finals group game in Denmark. 2006 – Jerzy Dudek played for Poland as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Lithuania in Bełchatów. 2007 – Future reds Victor Moses and Mamadou Sakho both played in European Championships Finals group games in Belgium. 2019 – Luke Chambers and Isaac Mabaya played for England Under-15’s as they lost a penalty shoot-out after their friendly meeting with the USA ended 1-1.

Happy birthday Thommo 1954 - Phil Thompson was born in Kensington, Liverpool. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. Martin’s bow 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel made his reds debut as a substitute for the injured Álvaro Arbeloa in our 2-2 home draw with Aston Villa, our fourth successive tie in the League. Yossi Benayoun gave us the lead before Villa hit back through Marlon Harewood and a Fábio Aurélio own goal in the space of three minutes. Peter Crouch came off the bench to bag a late leveller. 1905 – Forward James Garside played the first of his five senior reds games as we were held to a 1-1 draw in the Second Division at Anfield by Lincoln City, with our goal coming from right-half Robbie Robinson. In comes Scott 2005 - Young keeper Scott Carson signed from Leeds United for £750,000, with Paul Harrison going on loan in the opposite direction. Carson made just nine first-team appearances, only managing to keep two clean sheets. He moved on to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m in July 2008 after loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa and Charlton Athletic. Meanwhile, young midfielder John Welsh signed a new contract on the same day that tied him to Anfield until summer 2007. However, he moved to Hull City a year later, in exchange for winger Paul Anderson. Meanwhile, future red Daniel Agger played for Denmark Under-21’s as they lost 1-0 to Panama A in an unofficial international in Panama City. Jürgen’s ten tons 2023 - Jürgen Klopp took charge of his thousandth game as a Manager as Chelsea held us to a dour goalless draw at Anfield. 2024 – We thrashed Bournemouth 4-0 at their Vitality Stadium, despite the scores being goalless at half time. Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota both bagged braces as Conor Bradley became the first Northern Irish player to represent the reds in the League since inside-right Sammy Smyth at Blackpool in April 1954. Beglin’s bad break 1987 - Jim Beglin had his leg broken by Gary Stevens in his 98th and final reds game, with Ian Rush nabbing the only goal of our League Cup Fifth Round tie late on at Goodison. Africa’s finest 2003 - El-Hadji Diouf was named as the Glo-CAF African Footballer of the Year for the second successive season, a feat since surpassed by Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o who won the award three times in succession. That evening, he scored the opener in our 2-0 Worthington Cup Semi-final second leg win over Sheffield United at Anfield, with Michael Owen grabbing the decisive second in extra time, to take us through to Cardiff 3-2 on aggregate. This was our 400th goal in all competitions under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. Red centurions 2004 - Jamie Carragher made his comeback from a broken leg, playing his 200th League game as a late Kenny Miller strike denied us all three points at Wolverhampton Wanderers, after Bruno Cheyrou had put us ahead. This was our 200th League match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge, which had been rearranged after a flooded pitch before Christmas. 1950 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes reached a century of League appearances for the reds in our 2-0 defeat of Birmingham City at Anfield. Jimmy Payne and Albert Stubbins scored the goals. A first double 1899 - We beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield to complete the first ever League double in this fixture. Johnny Walker and Tom Robertson netted our goals. Beginnings and end 1939 – Right-half Harry Eastham nabbed his fourth and final reds goal as we thumped Stockport County 5-1 in the FA Cup Fourth Round at Anfield. Willie Fagan had a penalty saved, but Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer struck twice apiece, with Duggie Reid bagging the first of his six goals against the reds. 1933 - Outside-left Alf Hanson made his reds bow as we lost 5-2 at Aston Villa. Gordon Hodgson and Syd Roberts were on target for the reds, with centre-forward Les Bruton playing his eighth and last game for the club. Tom Waring nabbed two of his six goals against the reds, with Eric Houghton also scoring one of his six past us, Joe Beresford netting one of his four and James Gibson also on target. 1911 - Forward Joseph Brough played his eleventh and final reds game as we lost 2-0 at Nottingham Forest. Grenville Morris struck the last of his six goals past us, with Jack Armstrong also netting. A rare defeat 1978 - Birmingham City left Anfield with a 3-2 win to inflict on us one of just eleven home League defeats during the whole of the 1970’s. Birthday boy Phil Thompson and Ray Kennedy netted our goals. 500 away 1925 - We won 4-1 at Aston Villa in our 500th away League game, in a match postponed from three weeks earlier. Jimmy Walsh bagged a brace with Harry Chambers and Danny Shone also on the scoresheet as Len Capewell nabbed one of his six goals past us. Other birthdays 1961 - Former reserves forward Colin Russell was born in Liverpool. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. He left for Huddersfield Town in 1982. 1904 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was born in Coylton, Ayrshire. He signed from St. Mirren in February 1928 for £4,000 and struck four times in 254 reds games. He failed to win any honours during his spell at Anfield but had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren before joining the reds. He was a member of the Sunderland team that won the League title in 1936, having moved to Wearside in November 1935. Brucie’s back 1989 - Bruce Grobbelaar returned to the side after recovering from meningitis, with lookey-likey strike pairing John Aldridge and Ian Rush netting in a 2-0 defeat of Southampton at Anfield. 1967 - We also beat the Saints at home, with Chris Lawler and Alf Arrowsmith on target in a 2-1 victory in what was Bill Shankly’s 300th League game in charge. Twice against the Tractor Boys We have twice entertained Ipswich Town on this day in history. 1961 - We were held to a 1-1 draw in a Second Division meeting, when winger Kevin Lewis netted and Ted Phillips scored one of his five goals against the reds. Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower played his 105th and last reds game. 1986 - Paul Walsh, Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush struck as we won 3-0 in our Fifth Round League Cup tie. We were then knocked out by Queens Park Rangers in the Semi-final. Off on loan 2011 – Reserves defender Stephen Darby rejoined Notts County on loan, for whom he played a further eighteen times. 2009 – Jermaine Pennant moved to Portsmouth on loan. He had hit the target just three times in 81 reds games after signing from Birmingham City for £6.7m in July 2006. He appeared fourteen times for Pompey without scoring. 2000 - Phil Babb temporarily joined First Division Tranmere Rovers. He played seven times for the Lilywhites, before returning to the stiffs at Anfield. Ton up for Rigo 2006 - Ex-red Rigobert Song won his hundredth full international cap for Cameroon in their 3-1 defeat of Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Cairo. On the same day, Jari Litmanen was making his 99th appearance for Finland as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in a tournament in Riyadh, in what was Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge of the Finns. 2010 – Song also represented his country, as they drew 2-2 with Tunisia in a MTN Africa Cup of Nations group game in Angola. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah played for Egypt as they beat Uganda 1-0 in a group game in Gabon. Kolo Touré has played three times for the Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals on this day. 2002 – He was booked as they were held to a goalless draw by Togo in Mali. 2006 – He was on the winning side as Morocco lost 1-0 in Egypt, with the Ivory Coast making it all the way to the Final that year. 2008 – Nigeria lost 1-0 in Ghana. 2007 – Lucas captained Brazil as they drew 2-2 with Chile in a Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" game in Paraguay, with five players in total dismissed. 2016 - Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of the Czech Republic. Young English reds 1975 - Future red David Johnson netted as England Under-23’s beat their Welsh counterparts 2-0 in Wrexham. Phil Thompson made his debut at this level, on his 21st birthday, while future red Joey Jones also played. Other reds games 1956 – We beat Leicester City 3-1 in a Second Division match at Anfield, with Billy Liddell scoring a brace, including a penalty, and Alan Arnell also on target. 1928 – Sunderland won 5-2 in L4 with Fred Hopkin and Tommy Reid scoring our goals. Bobby Marshall struck one of his six goals past us, with Dave Halliday netting two of his twelve. Len Hargreaves also scored for the visitors, with reds keeper Arthur Riley punching the ball into his own net. 1922 – Harry Chambers bagged the only goal of our trip to Huddersfield Town late on. On the move 2004 - John Toshack took charge of Real Murcia, having been appointed two days earlier. This was the fourth Spanish club he had managed. They were bottom of the table in the Spanish League and he could not prevent them returning to the Second Division after just one season in the top flight. 2014 - Paul Ince was sacked as Manager of Blackpool after just eleven months in charge, leading them to just twelve victories in 42 games. 2019 – Ex-reds right-back Glen Johnson announced his retirement from playing, having been released by Stoke City at the end of the previous season. On the same day, future reds Wataru Endō and Takumi Minamino played as Japan beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 in an AFC Asian Cup Round of 16 tie in the United Arab Emirates. 2020 – Keeper Dan Atherton joined Marine on loan. On the same day, left-back Jack Robinson signed for Sheffield United from Nottingham Forest, so far playing eighteen times for the Blades. 2024 – Ex-reds loanee right-back Javier Manquillo was sold to Real Club Celta de Vigo by Newcastle United, having struck once in 110 outings for the Magpies since signing from Club Atlético de Madrid in July 2017.

Wembley derby joy 2012 - We came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at Wembley in our FA Cup Semi-final with keeper Brad Jones becoming the first reds player to make his first four appearances for the club in four different competitions. Nikica Jelavić pounced on hesitation in the centre of our defence to give the Blues a half-time lead. However, Luis Suárez then capitalised on a short back-pass by Sylvain Distin, with Andy Carroll heading in a late winner to send us through to our fourteenth Final. European semi-finals We have played three European Semi-finals on this day over the years. 1976 - Phil Thompson netted in our 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Anfield in the second leg, with Carlos Rexach equalising two minutes later. However, this was enough to take us to our second UEFA Cup Final, after John Toshack’s winner in the Camp Nou. This game set our record home European attendance of 55,104 while Brian Hall was playing his 224th and final reds game. 1966 - Bobby Lennox gave Celtic a first leg lead in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, which we overcame in the Anfield return to reach our first European Final. Forward Phil Chisnall was playing his ninth and last reds game. 1971 - Billy Bremner struck as Leeds United won 1-0 at Anfield in the Fairs Cup, with the last of his five goals against the reds. A goalless draw in the return at Elland Road saw the Yorkshiremen through, where they beat Juventus in the two-legged final. Heading towards Basel 2016 – We staged a dramatic come-back at a raucous Anfield to beat Jürgen Klopp’s former charges Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund 4-3 on the night to reach the UEFA Europa League Semi-final 5-4 on aggregate. We fell two goals behind inside the opening ten minutes, while we still needed to score twice in the final twelve minutes after Divock Origi scored in his third consecutive reds game with Philippe Coutinho also on target as we trailed 3-2 on the night. Mamadou Sakho nodded in before his centre-back partner Dejan Lovren headed in an injury-time winner. Red centurions 2019 – Gini Wijnaldum played his hundredth League game for the reds as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané headed us in front after the break before Mohamed Salah scored a stunning strike in what was Jürgen Klopp's 200th game in charge. 1973 – Full-back Chris Lawler played his 500th reds game as we beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at Anfield, with Kevin Keegan on target from the spot. 1959 – We lost a Second Division encounter 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday as Redfern Froggatt struck the last of his six goals past us, with inside-forward Jimmy Melia reaching a century of League games for the reds. Four apiece 2009 – We eventually drew 4-4 at Chelsea in the second leg of our Champions League Quarter-final to crash out 7-5 on aggregate. This was our 300th European game, and tenth meeting with Chelsea in continental competition, a new club record. We took a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to an innovative free-kick from Fábio Aurélio, his final reds strike, and a Xabi Alonso spot-kick. Didier Drogba embarrassed Pepe Reina at his near post to pull one back after the break, one of his eleven goals against the reds, with a thumping Alex free-kick drawing the scores level on the night, before Frank Lampard netted. A deflected strike from Lucas and Dirk Kuyt header left us needing just one more goal to progress. Unfortunately, another of Lampard’s eight goals past us then ended the scoring. Also recently 2018 – We beat Bournemouth 3-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, with Mohamed Salah nodding in his thirtieth League goal of the season, and fortieth in all competitions, before Roberto Firmino completed the scoring. 2007 - We were held to a goalless draw at the City Of Manchester Stadium by Manchester City. City’s Joey Barton pointedly ran to the away fans’ section and placed flowers in front of a giant ‘Justice for the 96’ banner before the game, which was played just a day before the anniversary of the disaster. 1995 - We lost 2-1 at Maine Road in another Premiership meeting, with future City player Steve McManaman netting our consolation. Dominic Matteo had the rare distinction of coming on as a substitute, before being replaced himself just nine minutes later. Tom’s milestone 1928 - Left-half Tom Bromilow played his 300th League game in a goalless top-flight draw with Newcastle United at Anfield. He went on to play 341 League games and 375 games in total for us. Bowing out 1923 - Ephraim Longworth won his fifth and final cap as England drew 2-2 with Scotland at Hampden Park in the British International Championships. Clubmate Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers also played, while Maurice Parry represented Wales on the same day in their 3-0 defeat in Wrexham by Ireland. 1902 – Winger Tommy Robertson played his 35th and last game for the reds as we lost 2-0 to Derby County at Anfield. 2021 – Real Madrid held us to a goalless draw behind closed doors at Anfield as we crashed out of the UEFA Champions League 3-1 on aggregate at the Quarter-final stage, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain reaching a century of reds outings. Biting the hand that fed 1984 - Ex-reds reserves striker Colin Russell netted one of Stoke City’s goals in their surprise 2-0 win at the Victoria Ground, with Ian Painter also on target. Graeme Souness was booked, taking him to a suspension for gathering twenty disciplinary points. International goalscorers 1951 - Billy Liddell struck as Scotland lost 3-2 to England at Wembley in the British International Championships. 2022 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as the Republic of Ireland beat North Macedonia 3-2 in a friendly, while winning his seventh and last Under-16’s cap. Tom the skipper 1934 - Future reds defender Tom Cooper captained England for the first time as they beat Scotland 3-0 in the British International Championships at Wembley. 1945 - Another red skippered his country, when Matt Busby represented Scotland as they were thumped 6-1 by England in a Wartime International at Hampden Park. Clubmate Jim Harley also played for the Scots. Red arrivals 1909 – Half-back John McConnell signed from Airdrieonians for £80. He netted just once in 53 first-team appearances leading up to the First World War, including one in goal in only his second game! 1897 – Welsh forward Billy Matthews was born in Plas Bennion. He netted eight times in thirteen Wartime games, signing from Colwyn Bay in 1918. He scored four times in nine outings before joining Bristol City in March 1922. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We twice entertained Manchester United in the League on this day in the space of three years. 1979 - We won 2-0 with Kenny Dalglish heading a goal and Phil Neal also on the scoresheet in what the Echo described as “a majestic exhibition of quality football to outplay their FA Cup conquerors” of ten days earlier. 1981 – We lost 1-0, thanks to a goal from Gordon McQueen. Hunt missing 1964 - Roger Hunt missed our trip to Burnley after playing in all of our previous 120 games. Alf Arrowsmith bagged a brace with Ian St. John also scoring in our 3-0 victory.
