We always win in Wales 2003 - Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen handed us a 2-0 win over Manchester United as we won the Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, to claim our seventh League Cup with Jerzy Dudek being named man of the match. John Arne Riise was playing in his hundredth reds game, while Milan Baroš suffered the rare indignity of coming on from the bench and then later himself being substituted. Happy birthdays 1924 - Centre-half Laurie Hughes was born in Liverpool, just off Everton Road. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in February 1943 and made 326 reds appearances, netting just once. He helped us to the first post-war League title and the FA Cup Final three years later and was the first red to appear in the World Cup Finals later that year. 1994 - Lazar Marković was born in Čačak, Serbia. He signed from SL Benfica for £20m in July 2014, netting three times in 34 games before moving to Fulham on a free transfer in January 2019 after a series of loan spells away from Anfield. 1955 - Forward Kevin Kewley was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in March 1972 but only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, as a substitute for Terry McDermott against Middlesbrough at Anfield in February 1978. He was sold to Dallas Tornado for £18,000 on his 23rd birthday, playing there for five years before moving to indoor side Wichita Wings. He retired from playing in 1990 and was last heard of coaching youth soccer and working in Wichita, Kansas. 1892 - Full-back William Jenkinson was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He signed from South Liverpool in 1916 but only played thirteen times before moving to Wigan Borough in June 1921. 1989 – Ex-reserves midfielder Ray Putterill was born in Liverpool. He starred in the victorious 2007 FA Youth Cup campaign and started training at Melwood later that summer. He scored on his first appearance for the senior side, in a 3-0 friendly win at Crewe Alexandra in August 2007, and featured on the bench in our Carling Cup tie at Reading a month later. He was released in the summer of 2009. Luis at the treble 2013 – Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick in our 4-0 win at Wigan Athletic to take him past twenty League goals for the season, after Stewart Downing had headed in an early opener. Most recently 2022 – We beat Norwich City 2-1 in the FA Cup Fifth Round at Anfield on our way to claiming the trophy for the eighth time. Takumi Minamino struck twice in the first half. To and fro with the Toffees 1934 – Forward Tosh Johnson signed from Everton, with whom he had won the League and FA Cup. However, he was past his best by the time he arrived at Anfield. He played 38 times for us, notching eight times before joining Darwen in August 1936. 1927 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw was sold to Everton for £3,750. He won two League titles after joining the reds in July 1919, scoring an impressive 124 times in 288 games. He has the unique honour of being the only player ever to claim League championship medals with both Merseyside clubs, helping the Blues to the title in his first full season across the park. 1922 – Welsh forward Billy Matthews moved on to Bristol City. After eight goals in thirteen Wartime reds games, he signed on from Colwyn Bay in 1918, netting four times in nine senior outings. A Fab strike 2008 - Fábio Aurélio scored his first reds goal as we won 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers. We opened the scoring when keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen spilled a Steven Gerrard shot that was heading wide and knocked it into his own net. Ryan Babel also got on the scoresheet as he completed his first full ninety minutes in the League, while Avi Cohen’s son Tamir scored for the Trotters. Red centurions 2016 – Keeper Simon Mignolet played his hundredth League game for the reds as we gained some revenge for our League Cup Final defeat three days earlier by beating Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield. Adam Lallana and James Milner scored in the first half, with Roberto Firmino on target after the break. 1907 – We lost a top-flight encounter 1-0 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground, with Ned Doig saving a penalty from George Dorsett. 1968 - Tommy Smith made his 150th consecutive reds appearance, in a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Roger Hunt bagged our goal, with Derek Dougan netting one of his four against the reds. 1985 – John Wark netted the only goal of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Anfield from the spot as Ian Rush played his 200th game for the club. Back to the Cottage 2002 - We beat Fulham 2-0 in what was billed as our last ever match at Craven Cottage, thanks to goals from Nicolas Anelka and Jari Litmanen. The game will also be remembered for a stunning last-ditch tackle from Stéphane Henchoz to deny Steve Marlet a goal. Stephen Wright played his 21st and final senior reds game that day. 1957 - We also won there in a Second Division match, with John Evans bagging his 53rd and final reds goal and Billy Liddell also on target in our 2-1 victory. Elton John’s cousin Roy Dwight scored the last of his four goals against us. Anfield trebles 1898 - Derby County trounced us 5-1 at Anfield in an FA Cup Third Round replay, with three from John Boag, one of only two FA Cup hat-tricks we have conceded and the first of his six strikes past ud. Frank Becton bagged our consolation from the spot as forwards Dan Cunliffe and Abe Hartley, and centre-half Joe McQue all played their final reds games. Steve Bloomer bagged two of his fourteen goals against us. 1895 – We won in the League by the same score in L4 when Jimmy Ross nabbed a brace and Davy Hannah, Harry Bradshaw and Neil Kerr were also on the scoresheet, with this being Kerr’s third and final goal for the reds. 1932 - A more welcome hat-trick was scored by Gordon Hodgson, one of his seventeen for the club, in a 4-1 home League win over West Bromwich Albion, when Gordon Gunson also netted. Billy ‘Ginger’ Richardson bagged the first of his nine strikes against the reds. Beginnings and ends 1986 - We won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur live on TV with Steve Perryman playing his final Spurs game, his 655th in the League. Ian Rush bagged his twentieth goal of the season in the final minute, with Jan Mølby also netting past ex-red Ray Clemence after Chris Waddle had given the home side an early lead. 1935 – Forward Sam English netted his 26th and final reds goal as we lost 3-2 at Grimsby Town in the top flight with Gordon Hodgson also on target. Pat Glover struck twice for the Mariners, with Ben Burley also on target. 1913 - Scottish centre-half Robert Neill died. He stood at only five foot four inches but won five full international caps. He signed from Hibernian in May 1896 after a loan spell, netting three times in 27 reds games before joining Rangers in April 1897, with whom he won the League and Cup. 1912 - Forward Billy Lacey made his reds bow in a 1-1 League draw at home to Middlesbrough, with Tom Miller grabbing our goal, his first of 56 for the club. European Cup defeats 1977 - We lost 1-0 at Saint-Étienne in the Third Round first leg, but of course famously fought back to qualify for the Semi-finals in the Anfield return. Dominique Bathenay volleyed the only goal of the game, after Steve Heighway had hit the post at the other end. 1983 - We were less fortunate, losing 2-0 at Widzew Lódz at the same stage before only winning 3-2 at Anfield. Bruce Grobbelaar was culpable for the first goal as he dropped a cross. International firsts 1889 - Anfield hosted its first ever international as England trounced Ireland 6-1 in the British International Championships. 1960 - Future red Ian St. John bagged a brace on his debut for Scotland Under-23’s as they drew 4-4 with England at Ibrox. Jimmy Greaves netted a treble for the English. 2010 – Robbie Keane won his first cap while on loan with Celtic as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to Brazil at the Emirates Stadium. Mario Balotelli won his sixteenth and last cap while playing alongside fellow future red Fabio Borini for Italy Under-21’s in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Péter Gulácsi’s Hungary. David N’Gog, future red Mamadou Sakho and ex-red Mikel San José also featured for the Under-21’s on the same day, with Chris Mavinga playing for France Under-19’s. 2012 – Mohamed Salah played in Egypt’s goalless friendly draw with DR Congo in Qatar. 1901 - Right-half Maurice Parry became our first Welsh international, in their 1-1 draw with Scotland in Wrexham, with ex-reds half-back Barney Battles appearing for the Scots. 1903 - Parry won his seventh cap in their 2-1 defeat by England in Portsmouth, again in the British International Championships. On the move 1998 - Nigel Spackman resigned as Manager of Sheffield United after seven months in charge, following the sale of several players for financial reasons. 1995 - David Burrows signed for Coventry City from Everton for £1.1m. He played 130 times as the Sky Blues held their own in the top flight. 2000 - Reserves striker Jon Newby joined Crewe Alexandra on loan. He failed to score in six first-team appearances. 2012 – Defender Stephen Wright signed for Wrexham, notching once in 39 outings before moving on to Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town in September 2014. 2020 - Daniel Sturridge received a four-month worldwide ban for breaching betting rules, having his contract with Trabzonspor terminated by mutual consent on the same day. Meanwhile, Academy coach Neil Critchley was appointed Manager of Blackpool. Other reds games 1997 – We lost 1-0 to Aston Villa at a muddy Villa Park thanks to a late Ian Taylor strike. 1985 – John Wark netted the only goal of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Anfield from the spot. 1974 – John Toshack was on target late on as we beat Burnley 1-0 in L4. 1963 – We lost 2-0 at home to Leicester City. 1901 – Charlie Satterthwaite and Sam Raybould struck as we drew 2-2 at Preston North End, with ex-red Frank Becton on target twice for the home side. Also in international action 2014 – Future red Joe Gomez captained England Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to Germany in the Algarve Tournament, with Sheyi Ojo also in action. -
World Cup winners 1966 - Our very own centre-forward ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt won a World Cup winner’s medal as England famously defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley, after extra-time. On the same day, former reserves forward George Scott married Carole. Bill Shankly called him “the best player ever to play for my reserves”, but he failed to break through to the first team, later turning out for Aberdeen and Tranmere Rovers. 1997 - Karl-Heinz Riedle, who had won the World Cup with West Germany in 1990, was signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for £1.8m. He scored fifteen times in 76 reds games, and also had a great influence on the young Michael Owen, before leaving Anfield for Fulham in a £200,000 deal in September 1999. Taking the shield 2022 - Darwin Núñez scored on his reds bow with Fábio Carvalho also debuting as we beat Manchester City 3-1 in the FA Community Shield in Leicester as keeper Adrián played for the 26th and last time. Trent Alexander-Arnold opened the scoring in the first half with Julián Álvarez equalising after the break. Mohamed Salah converted a penalty before Núñez headed in in stoppage time. Double debutants 2008 – Forwards Robbie Keane and David N’Gog played their first reds games as we shared a goalless draw at Villarreal. 2014 – We drew 2-2 with Manchester City in an International Champions Cup group game at New York’s Yankee Stadium, with Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling both on target. There was no extra time, with the reds winning a shoot-out 3-1, despite Daniel Sturridge missing from twelve yards as Simon Mignolet made two penalty saves. 2016 – Midfielder Gini Wijnaldum played his first reds game as we beat AC Milan 2-0 in an International Champions Cup game in California, with Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino on target. Happy birthdays 1899 – Scottish centre-forward Willie Devlin was born in Bellshill, Lanarkshire. He bagged fifteen goals in just nineteen reds games, but was only at Anfield for seven months in 1927 between signing from Huddersfield Town and leaving for Heart Of Midlothian. His brother Tom was also a forward in the reserves at Anfield at the same time. 1979 – Physio Chris Morgan was born. He joined the reds in 2006, but moved on in 2016 for spells with Crystal Palace and Arsenal, before returning as a First Team Physiotherapist in August 2020. The Pope is a red 2001 - liverpoolfc.tv website statistics revealed that six priests from the Vatican had signed up to the club’s official site. A spokeswoman for the Roman Catholic Church said, “The Pope is well known as a big football fan and there are computers in every office in the Vatican. It is likely he signed up for the Liverpool website and I wouldn’t be surprised if he did follow their progress.” In and out 1998 - Neil Ruddock was sold to West Ham United for £100,000 after twelve goals in 152 first-team appearances. He struck three times in 56 games for the Hammers before moving on to Crystal Palace in July 2000. 2020 – Polish keeper Jakub Ojrzyński signed professional terms with the reds, having arrived at the Academy in the summer of 2019. Paul Ince was sold to Middlesbrough, while Sean Dundee left for VfB Stuttgart, both for £1m fees. Ince had bagged seventeen goals in 81 reds games, many as skipper, while Dundee had only made five senior appearances, without finding the net. Making history 2002 - Liverpool’s friendly with S.S. Lazio at Anfield was the first time a Premiership team had shown an entire match live on the internet. We lost the game 1-0, but the Kop was impressed by one of our new signings, French midfielder Bruno Cheyrou. Stanley off the mark 1995 - New signing Stan Collymore scored his first reds goal after Rui Costa gave Fiorentina the lead from the spot as we drew 1-1 in the third-place play-off of the pre-season Mönchengladbach Trophy. The game was decided by a penalty shoot-out, with keeper David James saving twice and then scoring the decisive final reds kick as we won 3-2. Robbie Fowler and Steve Harkness had also converted, with Steve McManaman and Neil Ruddock proving unsuccessful. 2023 – Midfielder Bobby Clark and winger Ben Doak both scored for the reds for the first time as we thumped Leicester City 4-0 in a Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2023 encounter, with Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota also on target. More debutants 1986 - Barry Venison played his first reds game as we were held 1-1 by a Denmark Select XI, made up of players from Brøndby IF and Lyngby BK, in a game played in honour of the Danish town of Holbæk’s 750th anniversary, with Kevin MacDonald scoring our goal. 1985 - Young forward Wayne Harrison made his reds bow in our 2-2 friendly draw at Crewe Alexandra. Ian Rush and Steve Nicol were on target that day. Ground celebrations 1968 - We won 3-0 at Tranmere Rovers in a game played to celebrate the opening of a new stand. Ian Callaghan grabbed a brace, with Ian St. John netting the other. 1991 - The reds beat Swedish side Ludvika 3-2 at Hillängen, to help commemorate the stadium’s fiftieth anniversary. Youngster Steve McManaman scored his first reds goal in this match, with Ronnie Whelan and Dean Saunders also hitting the target. Losing at Wembley 1989 - We lost the Final of the Makita International Tournament 1-0 to Arsenal at Wembley, thanks to a Steve Bould goal. 1980 - Kenny Dalglish and Phil Neal netted as we beat Dundalk 2-0 at Lansdowne Road in our other friendly on this day. The game was arranged as part of a deal that took Synan Braddish, Derek Carroll and Brian Duff to Anfield for a combined £50,000 fee in 1978. However, all three were already back at Dundalk by the time of this match! On the move 2000 - Robbie Keane left Coventry City to sign for Internazionale in a £13m deal. He had struck twelve times in 34 games for the Sky Blues and went on to bag just three goals in fourteen outings for the nerazzurri, before returning to England to join Leeds United, initially on loan. 2010 - David James signed for Bristol City, having been released by Portsmouth. He turned out on 84 occasions for the Robins before being released in May 2012. 2013 – Former reserves centre-half Godwin Antwi signed for Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt. However, he only stayed there for seven months before joining Sisaket in Thailand. 2016 – Young forward Jack Dunn joined Morecambe on loan, netting six times in nineteen games. 2018 – Ex-reds Jack Hobbs joined Bolton Wanderers from Nottingham Forest on a free transfer, netting once in 27 games in his first campaign with the Trotters. 2019 – Young Welsh forward Ben Woodburn joined Oxford United on loan, netting once in sixteen outings as they lost the League One Play-off Final earlier this month. On the same day, ex-reds winger Toni Silva signed for Romanian side Astra Giurgiu, only staying there seven months. 2021 – Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold signed a new contract. He joined the Academy at the age of six, striking nineteen times in 310 senior appearances across his first eight seasons as he helped the reds to claim the League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. On the move? 2004 - The club’s new stadium was granted planning permission by Liverpool City Council. However, work never began in earnest and the plans have now been firmly scrapped. European champions 2010 – Chris Mavinga’s France Under-19’s beat Spain 2-1 in the Final of the European Championships in Caen. The Frenchman was winning his twelfth and final cap at this level, while Dani Pacheco and future red Thiago Alcântara both featured for the losing side. 1996 - Gérard Houllier took charge of France Under-18’s, with Christian Damiano, as they beat Spain 1-0 in the European Championships Final in Besançon. Internationals on target 1910 - Ex-red Arthur Berry scored for an England side that beat South Africa 6-3 in an FA Tour game in Cape Town. 1995 - Titi Camara struck his first two goals as a Racing Club de Lens player as Guinea beat Mali 4-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Conakry. International bows 2007 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić played his first game for Denmark Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Belgium in a tournament game in Herning. 2011 – Philippe Coutinho won his first cap for Brazil Under-20’s as they drew 1-1 with Egypt in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia, with fellow future red Mohamed Salah also featuring. Also in international action 1999 - Brad Friedel captained the USA as they beat Germany 2-0 in a Confederations Cup group game in Guadalajara. 1989 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil thumped Venezuela 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Caracas. -
Crossing the Pennines 2017 – Left-back Andy Robertson signed from Hull City for an initial £8m, scoring eleven goals in 297 outings across his first seven seasons as he has so far helped us to claim the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and FA Community Shield. On the same day, midfielder Kevin Stewart made the reverse journey for a reported £6m, having made twenty senior appearances for the reds since arriving in July 2014 after his contract with Tottenham Hotspur expired. Happy birthday Mike 1969 - Mike Marsh was born in Kirkby. He bagged six goals in 101 reds games before being part of the deal that brought Julian Dicks to Anfield from West Ham United in September 1993. He left Melwood in June 2015, having risen to First Team Coach after progressing rapidly through the Academy coaching ranks. Welcome Vedgy 1998 - Vegard Heggem arrived from Rosenborg BK for £3.5m, the only signing made by the joint management team of Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier. His five years at Anfield were ravaged by hamstring injuries, and he could only make 65 appearances, scoring three times. 2010 – Joe Cole signed on a free transfer from Chelsea. He notched just five times in 42 reds outings, spending a season on loan at Lille OSC Métropole before returning to West Ham United for free in January 2013. Djibril Cissé, Carl Medjani, Darren Potter, David Raven and Stephen Warnock all made their first outings for the club as we beat Wrexham 2-1 at the Racecourse Ground. Anthony Le Tallec grabbed both our goals. Four for Darwin 2022 - Darwin Núñez scored his first reds goals, bagging four, with his first coming from the spot, as we thumped RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. 5-0 in their Red Bull Arena in a pre-season friendly after Mohamed Salah had opened the scoring. Other birthdays 1979 - Andriy Voronin was born in Odessa. The Ukrainian forward arrived from Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer in July 2007 and bagged six goals in 28 outings in his first season, before being loaned out to Hertha BSC Berlin, whom he helped to a fourth-placed finish in the Bundesliga, netting eleven times in 26 games. He then returned to Anfield where he failed to score in another twelve games before being sold to Dinamo Moskva in January 2010 for £1.8m. 1961 – Former reserves midfielder Mick Halsall was born in Bootle. He left Anfield in 1983 after six years as a professional to forge a successful career with Birmingham City, Carlisle United and Peterborough United. Lonergan’s lone outing 2019 – Keeper Andy Lonergan made his only first-team appearance, playing the first half of our 2-1 defeat by Sevilla in Boston, with the Spaniards having Joris Gnagnon dismissed for a horror tackle on Yasser Larouci. Nolito opened the scoring with Divock Origi equalising before the break. However, Alejandro Pozo struck a late winner. Roy’s stalemate start 2010 – Roy Hodgson took charge of the reds for the first time as we were held to a goalless draw at Grasshopper-Club Zürich. Forwards David Amoo and Lauri Dalla Valle, midfielders Tom Ince, Victor Pálsson and Jonjo Shelvey and centre-back Steven Irwin all made their first senior appearances for the club. Justice denied 2000 - Former South Yorkshire Police Superintendent Bernard Murray was cleared of manslaughter at Leeds Crown Court over his part in the Hillsborough disaster. The jury took longer to come to a conclusion on former Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, although he was also eventually not convicted. Striking out 2007 - Robbie Fowler signed for Cardiff City, after twelve strikes in 39 games in his second reds spell. He netted six times in just sixteen outings in a season that was once again hampered by injury. 2014 – Iago Aspas joined Sevilla on loan after netting just once in fifteen reds games since arriving from Real Club Celta de Vigo for £7.7m in June 2013. He returned to his former club two years later for €5m. Reds farewells 2006 - Former keeper Bert Slater died in Brechin. He arrived from Falkirk in swap deal for Tommy Younger in June 1959 and played 111 times, winning a Second Division title medal in 1962, before returning to Scotland to join Dundee that July. 2021 – Scottish left-half Tommy Leishman died. He had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren, signing for £10,000 in November 1949. Bowyer deal off 2002 - Liverpool pulled out of the controversial deal to bring Lee Bowyer to Anfield. A club spokesman said, “Liverpool Football Club have decided not to go ahead with the proposed transfer of Lee Bowyer for a variety of reasons. Manager Gérard Houllier was not convinced the player had either the hunger or desire to play for the club, qualities which are essential for any Liverpool player.” Reds in action 2007 - A Liverpool XI played in a testimonial match for Peterborough United’s long-serving keeper Mark Tyler at London Road. Martin Hansen saved a penalty as the game ended goalless. Dioufy on target 2001 - El-Hadji Diouf netted in Senegal’s 5-0 thumping of Namibia in a World Cup qualifier in Windhoek. Fellow future red Salif Diao also played. Youngsters on the mark 2010 – Dani Pacheco nabbed a brace as Spain Under-19’s beat Portugal 2-1 in a European Championship Finals group fixture in France, with future red Thiago Alcântara also in action. Meanwhile, Chris Mavinga played as France thumped Austria 5-0 and future reds Steven Caulker and Nathaniel Clyne both featured in England’s 1-0 defeat by the Netherlands in the same competition, with future red Fabio Borini playing for Italy in their goalless draw with Croatia. 2000 - Future red Milan Baroš was on the scoresheet as the Czech Republic Under-18’s beat their Finnish counterparts 3-2 in a European Championship Finals group game in Germany. His future clubmate Daniel Sjölund was on the losing side. 2002 - Fernando Torres featured as Spain Under-19’s drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic in a group encounter in Norway. Babb steps up 1992 - Phil Babb joined Coventry City from Bradford City for £500,000. He had played as a midfielder at Valley Parade, scoring fourteen times in 93 appearances. He looked an accomplished centre-back at Highfield Road, grabbing four goals in 84 appearances before arriving at Anfield. Grég sees red 2000 - Grégory Vignal was sent off as France Under-18’s beat a Czech Republic side that included future red Milan Baroš 1-0 in a European Championship Finals group game in Bavaria. More moves 1999 - Stan Collymore joined Fulham on loan from Aston Villa. He scored just once in nine appearances for the Cottagers before returning to Villa Park. He was then moved on to Leicester City on a free transfer a few months later, at a loss to Villa of £7m. 2000 - Ex-reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed for Italian side Ternana from Crystal Palace for £100,000. He stayed there for two seasons before moving on to Lecce. 2012 – Right-back Nathaniel Clyne joined Southampton from Crystal Palace after one goal in 139 games for the Eagles. Future Assistant Manager Sean O'Driscoll was named Nottingham Forest boss on the same day. He became the first player to switch directly from Everton to Liverpool since Dave Hickson in November 1959. He only made four senior appearances in early 1936, after signing from Everton that January, moving on to Bristol Rovers just two months later. He had previously been a prolific marksman with hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers, bagging 164 goals in 221 League games. 1895 - Mid-1920’s reserves full-back James Garner was born in Manchester. He only played five times for the reds and went on to make 26 League appearances for Southport. Writing history 2002 - It was announced that a new weekly magazine called LFC would be launched the following month, the first official weekly magazine dedicated to a single Premiership club. Rick Parry said, “We feel our fans are ready for the new weekly ‘LFC’ magazine which will give them a real insight into life at Anfield and Melwood.” It was eventually replaced by a monthly publication after 513 issues. Youngsters on their way out 2006 - French centre-back Carl Medjani signed for Lorient permanently, having previously spent a season on loan there. Shanks departs 1974 - Bill Shankly resigned as Manager after fifteen years in charge, leaving reds fans bemused and shocked. He had led us to three League titles, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and the Second Division championship. His final significant act as boss was to sign Arsenal forward Ray Kennedy for a club record fee of £180,000, announced the very same day. Razor went on to net 72 times in 393 reds games, helping us to claim six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982. The Wright signing 1991 - Mark Wright arrived from Derby County for £2.2m. With Alan Hansen retired, Glenn Hysén soon to go and Gary Gillespie moving on to Celtic, we were in dire need of a quality centre-back, and Wright was drafted in after his impressive displays for England at the 1990 World Cup. He notched nine times in 210 reds appearances and lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992 before retiring from playing in August 1998. Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter both also featured. Bowyer on his way 2002 - It was announced that a fee had been agreed with Leeds United for the controversial capture of midfielder Lee Bowyer. He was expected to sign on at Anfield the following week, although the deal fell through after Gérard Houllier grew uncomfortable with the player’s attitude and level of commitment to Liverpool. Red learnings 2000 - Liverpool’s ground-breaking Study Support centre in the Kop stand was officially opened by Professor Michael Barber, Head of the Government’s Standards & Effectiveness Unit for Education. Phil’s sad day 2006 - The funeral of former player, Coach and Manager Phil Taylor’s wife Maisey was held at Thornton crematorium. Last-gasp heartache 1989 - Having already claimed the FA Cup in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster, we only had to avoid defeat at home to Arsenal by two clear goals or more to clinch our second double in four seasons. He joined the reds from Manchester City for £8,000 in March 1936, making 122 appearances for us, many as captain, notching three times. He was appointed as coach and Assistant Manager to George Kay at Anfield in May 1944, but he was released by the club the following February after disagreements with the board, taking over as Manager of Manchester United a few days later. 1991 – Reserves left-back Chris Mavinga was born in Meaux, France. He signed from Paris St. Germain in July 2009 but was sold to Stade Rennais for £1m two years later, having failed to break through to the first team. 1896 – Scottish left-back James Penman was born in Kelty, Fife. He signed from Glasgow Ashfield in 1919, but only played once before returning to his homeland to sign for Lochgelly United in 1921. Final despair 2018 – We lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv, as keeper Loris Karius had a personal nightmare in his 49th and final game for the club, with Mohamed Salah being forced off with injury after just half an hour. Karim Benzema scored one of his seven goals past us shortly after half time, but Sadio Mané levelled just four minutes later. A Philly dozen 1946 - We trounced a Philadelphia Select of American League side 12-0 in a friendly in the Yellow Jacket Stadium. Cyril Done struck four times, with Jack Balmer bagging a hat-trick and Phil Taylor and Willie Fagan both netting braces, and Bob Priday rounding out the scoring. Opening a new stadium 1978 - We played a game to commemorate the opening of the new Al Nasr Stadium in the United Arab Emirates, beating Al Nasr Club 5-0. Our scorers were fairly unusual, with substitute Colin Irwin and Ray Kennedy both bagging braces, and Alan Hansen also on target. 1980 - We returned to the Middle East to beat a Bahrain XI 2-1 on the Three Fives Gulf Football Tour. This time, Howard Gayle and Graeme Souness got on the scoresheet. Signing on 2014 - Brendan Rodgers signed a new contract, having just led the reds to within a whisker of the League title. Happy birthday Jerzy 1973 - Jerzy Dudek was born in Rybnik. The big Pole in our goal made 186 reds appearances after signing from Feyenoord for £4.85m in August 2001, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He left to join Real Madrid in July 2007, although he barely featured for their first team. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh took charge of his first reds game as Jack Haigh nabbed the only goal of our top-flight meeting with Charlton Athletic at Anfield. Left-back Eddie Spicer reached a century of League appearances in this game. Away goals galore 1985 - John Wark netted an eighteen-minute hat-trick in our 5-0 win at West Bromwich Albion, with Steve Nicol and Kenny Dalglish also on target, while Bruce Grobbelaar saved a Derek Statham penalty. Wark therefore became the only red to score trebles in three different competitions in the same season, after Anfield hat-tricks against Lech Poznan in the European Cup and York City in the FA Cup. 1993 – Ian Rush put us in front at Crystal Palace after the break, but Chris Armstrong scored the 4,000th goal we had conceded in the top flight as the match ended 1-1 at Selhurst Park, with Steve Nicol playing his 300th League game for the club. 1991 - We routed Derby County 7-1 at the Baseball Ground under Ronnie Moran’s temporary control, thanks to a Jan Mølby penalty, braces from John Barnes and Steve Nicol, and goals from Ian Rush and Ray Houghton. Future red Dean Saunders scored the first of his four goals past us, although the only one before he moved to Anfield. 1903 - We also beat Derby in the First Division, winning 3-1 at Anfield, with left-half Bill Goldie netting his sixth and final reds goal and Sam Raybould and Jack Cox also on target. Masch off 2008 - We were beaten 3-0 at Manchester United, with Javier Mascherano sent off under a short-lived clampdown on players questioning officials. Wes Brown, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani netted for the home side. 1912 - We held the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford when Jack Parkinson netted our goal in this top-flight encounter. Jay off 2010 – Reserves midfielder Jay Spearing joined Leicester City on loan. He struck once in eleven outings as they reached the Championship Play-off Semi-finals. Bradley off the mark 1907 - Left-half Jim Bradley scored his first reds goal of eight as we thumped Newcastle United 4-1 at Anfield. Arthur Goddard, Jack Cox and Joe Hewitt were also on the scoresheet. A half century over Leeds 2003 - We earned our fiftieth League win over Leeds United in the 98th meeting. Michael Owen, Danny Murphy and Steven Gerrard all netted in a 3-1 win, with Mark Viduka bagging one of his six goals past us. Other births and deaths 1983 - Former reserves right-back Jon Otsemobor was born in Speke, Liverpool. He signed pro terms on his seventeenth birthday but played just six first-team games for us, before joining Rotherham United in July 2005. 1914 - Centre-half Norman Low was born in Aberdeen. He joined the reds in October 1933 but only played thirteen times while at Anfield, deputising for Tom Bradshaw, before moving on to Newport County in November 1936. 1908 – John Charlton was born in Leadgate, County Durham. He signed from Bradford City in October 1929, but only played three senior games before moving on to Derry City in 1932. 1947 – David Ashworth died. He was appointed as reds boss in December 1919. He had previously guided Oldham Athletic from non-League into the top flight, to whom he returned in December 1922 with the reds en route to retaining the League title he had led them to the previous season. 2011 – Ex-reds midfielder Trevor Storton died. He struck eight times in 118 League games for Tranmere Rovers before switching to Anfield for £25,000 in July 1972. He only played twelve times in two years before joining Chester, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. Double departure 1897 – Forward Malcolm McVean and inside-right Jimmy Ross were both sold to Burnley, although the Clarets got relegated at the end of that campaign. McVean had signed from Third Lanark in 1892, scoring our first ever League goal, bagging 43 in total in 126 reds games. He helped us to the Lancashire League title and two Second Division championships. Ross was known as the ‘little demon’, signing from the ‘invincible’ Preston North End for a club record £75 in August 1894, helping us to the Second Division title, scoring 39 times in 85 reds games and captaining the side. International doubles 1994 - Future reds Phil Babb and Jason McAteer both won their first full international caps for the Republic of Ireland in their goalless friendly meeting with Russia at Lansdowne Road. Ronnie Whelan skippered the Irish that day, while future red Gary McAllister captained Scotland on the same day, as they lost a friendly 1-0 to the Netherlands at Hampden Park. Meanwhile, former reds reserves midfielder Jim Magilton won his first Northern Ireland cap as a Southampton player as they beat Romania 2-0 in a friendly at Windsor Park. 2017 – Rhian Brewster bagged a brace as England Under-17’s beat the Czech Republic 5-3 in a European Championships qualifier in Bosnia & Herzegovina, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Meanwhile, Bernard Diomède was managing France Under-18’s to a 2-1 friendly defeat of Germany in Chauny. Stig on the way out 2000 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye was loaned out to Brøndby IF. He netted twice in thirteen League games for the Danish side and was sold to Blackburn Rovers within a month of his return to Anfield. 1999 - Reserves midfielder Danny Williams joined Wrexham on a free, bagging four goals in 48 games. He was then signed by Jan Mølby for Kidderminster Harriers. Alf’s last strike 1968 - Centre-forward Alf Arrowsmith struck his final reds goal as we won 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday. His 24 goals came in 56 games. 1901 - We also faced The Wednesday, being held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield in another top-flight encounter, with Sam Raybould grabbing our goal and Fred Spiksley scoring one of his four against the reds. Anfield first 1893 – The first testimonial to be played by the reds at Anfield saw Bootle Boys Brigade beaten 1-0 in a match staged in aid of Liverpool Caledonians’ David Kirkwood. John Miller scored the goal. A semi-final thriller 1899 - We drew an FA Cup Semi-final replay 4-4 with Sheffield United at Burnden Park. Our goals came from Johnny Walker, George Allan, Jack Cox and a Peter Boyle own goal. Walter Bennett struck one of his five goals past us, with Fred Priest bagging a brace and Billy Beer also on target. Unfortunately, we lost a second replay 1-0 at Baseball Ground a week later. 1929 – The fifth and most recent FA Cup Semi-final to be staged at Anfield took place, with eventual winners Bolton Wanderers beating Huddersfield Town 3-1. Harkness starts out 1989 - Steve Harkness signed as a professional for Carlisle United. He played thirteen times before being signed by Kenny Dalglish four months later. Supersub’s treble 1980 - David Johnson missed our trip to Norwich City after receiving four stitches to a head wound acquired on international duty, while Graeme Souness was suspended, which meant that Bob Paisley made his first changes to the reds side for seventeen games. Sammy Lee and David Fairclough stepped in, with supersub notching his only reds hat-trick in our 5-3 win. We had fallen behind to a first-minute header from the veteran Martin Peters, the last of his fourteen goals past us, with Kevin Reeves levelling things again with his head before the break, one of his four strikes against the reds. Justin Fashanu’s spectacular strike tied the game at 3-3 and was good enough to win Match Of The Day’s Goal of the Season award. Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Case added late goals to clinch the victory. The day was made even better for reds fans as Everton lost 4-0 at home to Ipswich Town, with Toffees supporters venting their frustration with boss Gordon Lee by throwing cushions onto the pitch! On the way to Wembley 1982 - We reached our second consecutive League Cup Final as Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish netted in a 2-2 draw in our Semi-final second leg meeting with Ipswich Town at Anfield, to progress 4-2 on aggregate. This was the third consecutive match in which we had faced the Tractor Boys. The game was also notable for future red John Wark taking a painfully direct hit from a Terry McDermott pile-driver, leading the Kop to start singing “Johnny Wark, Johnny Wark, Johnny Wark” in falsetto! Eric Gates struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Alan Brazil also on the scoresheet. Sadio again 2019 - Sadio Mané netted in his fourth consecutive game to open the scoring with his head as we beat Bournemouth 3-0 at Anfield. Gini Wijnaldum was also on target before the break, with Mohamed Salah completing the scoring shortly after half-time as we restored a three-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table. An Abel start 2002 - Abel Xavier scored on his reds debut as we romped past Ipswich Town, winning 6-0 at Portman Road to end their good run and help send them on the way towards relegation. Sami Hyypiä also scored, to add to braces from strike partners Emile Heskey and Michael Owen. Pegguy Arphexad made his sixth and final reds appearance as a second-half substitute for Jerzy Dudek, helping us to keep our first clean sheet on this day in history since 1921, with ten matches between the two. 2016 – Centre-half Tiago Ilori played his third and last reds game as a young reds team lost 2-1 at West Ham United in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay. Philippe Coutinho scored from a free-kick after Michael Antonio had scored one of his five goals past us to date on the stroke of half time. However, Angelo Ogbonna headed in an extra-time winner. 1972 – We lost an FA Cup Fourth Round replay 2-0 at Leeds United, with Allan Clarke grabbing the last two of his seven goals past us as Ian Ross made his 69th and last reds appearance. Mixed derby fortunes 1991 - David Speedie scored twice on his Anfield debut in a 3-1 win, with Jan Mølby also on target, in the first of our three consecutive derby games in twelve days. Pat Nevin bagged his only derby goal for the visitors in this fixture. 1929 – Forward John McFarlane became our youngest ever player when he debuted as we lost 2-1 at home to Everton in the League, with Harry Race grabbing our consolation. McFarlane was aged just seventeen years and 47 days, but only played one more senior game. Tommy White struck one of his four goals past us, with Tom Griffiths also netting. He turned out 26 times for the R’s before retiring from the professional game at the end of the 2006/07 season. 2012 - Xherdan Shaqiri joined Bayern München from Basel for €11.6m after 23 goals in 130 games for the Swiss side. He had helped them to three consecutive League titles and the Swiss Cup twice. 2019 – Left-winger Alexander Kačaniklić signed for Hammarby IF back in his native Sweden having been released by Nantes the previous December. 2022 – Shaqiri moved to Chicago Fire from Olympique Lyonnais for a reported €6.5m, scoring fourteen times in 63 outings in his first two campaigns in the USA. On the same day, young midfielder Luca Stephenson signed a new contract with the reds. He had arrived from Sunderland at Under-15’s level. Birth and deaths 2019 – Utility player Ian Ross died. He signed professional terms in August 1965 and netted four times in 69 appearances spread across six seasons at Anfield. He left for Aston Villa in February 1972 for £60,000, going on to captain them to the Third Division title, as well as the League Cup in 1975. 1993 – Japanese midfielder Wataru Endō was born in Yokohama. He signed from Vfb Stuttgart for a reported €19m in August 2023, debuting against Bournemouth the day after arriving. 1957 - Ex-reds centre-back Colin Irwin was born in Liverpool. He turned professional in November 1974 and made just 44 reds appearances, including the 1981 League Cup Final, although he did not get a winners’ medal, as he was left out of the replay. However, he won a European Cup winner’s medal in 1978, despite not seeing any action in our Wembley victory. John Toshack signed him for Swansea City for a club record £340,000 in the summer of 1981. 1905 – Half-back Barney Battles died in Gallowgate, Glasgow. He won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for six weeks on loan at the end of the 1895/96 season where he featured in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. He re-signed from Dundee in March 1898 for £20 but only played one more game before joining Celtic for a third spell seven months later. 1936 – Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf died. He signed from Newcastle United for £150 in May 1912 and netted 28 times in 63 reds games, playing in every position on the park. Against the Mancs 1986 - Colin Gibson opened the scoring for Manchester United in our League meeting at Anfield. Paul Walsh had to go off with an ankle injury, and substitute John Wark equalised after Sammy Lee hit a post, to secure a point. 1921 - We also entertained United, winning our top-flight meeting 2-0 thanks to goals from Harry Lewis and Harry Chambers. Happy birthday Emile 1978 - Emile Heskey was born in Leicester. Paul Hinshelwood gave the visitors the lead from distance before Kevin Keegan equalised, with Steve Heighway then bagging a brace, and George Graham adding a late second for Palace, the final one of his four strikes past us. Cally played a club-record 857 games in total. Two in 2007 - Young Argentine left-back Emiliano Insúa signed on loan from Boca Juniors, making the move permanent in August 2007. He made 62 senior appearances, netting his only goal in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009. He joined Galatasaray on loan in August 2010, leaving permanently for Sporting Clube de Portugal a year later. More League Cup wins 2005 - Steven Gerrard bagged the only goal of the game as we beat First Division Watford 1-0 in the first leg of our Carling Cup Semi-final at Anfield. We won the return by the same score to reach our tenth League Cup Final. 2017 – We lost 1-0 in the first leg of our EFL Cup Semi-final at Southampton, with Nathan Redmond on target. Sadly, we lost the Anfield return by the same score to fall at the final hurdle. Sadio Mané missed the game as he was playing for Senegal in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Congo DR in Brazzaville ahead of the African Cup of Nations. 1995 - An Ian Rush strike handed us a 1-0 Coca-Cola Cup win over Arsenal at Anfield. The giant centre-half played 454 times for the reds, netting sixteen times and captaining us to two League titles, our first FA Cup, the Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. He was one of Bill Shankly’s first and most inspired signings, arriving for just £30,000 from Dundee United in July 1961. He moved on to Tranmere Rovers in December 1971. Clem departs 2020 – Legendary keeper Ray Clemence died. He arrived from Sc***horpe United for £18,000 in June 1967, usurping Tommy Lawrence as first choice number one after two years. He went on to make 665 reds appearances, winning five League titles, an FA Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, a League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and four FA Charity Shields, before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur in August 1981. Technicolor reds 1969 - Our 2-0 home win over West Ham United was the first game screened in colour by the BBC’s Match Of The Day. Chris Lawler and Bobby Graham scored the goals, with forward Steve Peplow making the first of his three senior appearances. On the move 1999 - Stephen Wright was loaned to Crewe Alexandra for the second time, making seventeen appearances before returning to Anfield. Two more legends honoured 2007 - Peter Beardsley and Graeme Souness were both inducted into the Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. Beardsley won two League titles, the FA Cup, and two FA Charity Shields while at Anfield, as well as 59 England caps and a ‘new’ Second Division title with Fulham. Souness claimed five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields while with the reds, also winning 54 Scottish caps, a Second Division championship, Coppa Italia and Scottish League title as a player. Terry Mac signs on 1974 – Terry McDermott signed from Newcastle United for £175,000. He struck 81 times in 329 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980 he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player Of The Year Awards in the same season. He returned to St. James’ Park in September 1982. Red trebles 2004 - Milan Baroš grabbed his only reds treble, including two penalties, as we beat Crystal Palace 3-2 at Anfield. This remains our only hat-trick against the Eagles to date. 1982 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick as we beat Coventry City 4-0 in a League match at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, while Bruce Grobbelaar conceded a penalty but saved the resultant spot-kick taken by Mark Hateley. On the same day, future red Glenn Hysén played as Sweden won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Cyprus. Goals galore 1996 - We beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 in a League Cup Third Round replay, with goals from Mark Wright, Jamie Redknapp and a Robbie Fowler brace. 1965 - Northampton Town headed home on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline. Ian St. John, Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson were all on the scoresheet that day, with Willie Stevenson netting from the spot. The Cobblers were relegated to the Second Division at the end of that season. Beating Citeh 1937 - We won 3-1 at Maine Road thanks to goals from Phil Taylor, John Shafto and Willie Fagan, with right-back Tommy Cooper playing his hundredth reds game. 1948 - We beat Manchester City 4-2 in another First Division meeting at the same ground, with Phil Taylor again on target. Cyril Done bagged a brace, with Jimmy Payne opening the scoring. 1929 – We lost a Lancashire Senior Cup Third Round tie by the odd goal in nine at Anfield. Derby despair 1971 - We lost at Goodison Park with future red David Johnson grabbing the only goal of the game in his first Merseyside derby, the first of his four goals past us. Our cause was not helped when Larry Lloyd limped off with a serious knee injury in the first half that kept him out for two months. Referee Clive Thomas awarded an amazing 55 free-kicks in a niggly game. This was Bill Shankly’s 500th League game in charge. Dan the man 2006 - Daniel Agger was named Danish Young Player of the Year. He had turned out just sixteen times for the reds by this stage, having arrived from Brøndby IF for £5.8m that January. Seven for Cyril 1943 - Cyril Done scored an amazing seven goals as we trounced Chester 9-0 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Stan Palk and Andy Beattie struck the others. Ins and out 1936 – Centre-half Norman Low left the reds for Newport County. He only played thirteen times since arriving at Anfield in October 1933, deputising for Tom Bradshaw. 2023 – Midfielder Ben Trueman signed pro terms with the reds, having joined the Academy at the age of five. 1965 - Doug Livermore signed pro terms after starting out with Bolton Wanderers, making just eighteen appearances in our midfield before joining Norwich City in November 1970, but he returned to Anfield as Roy Evans’ Assistant in 1994. He left in November 1998 following Gérard Houllier taking full control. Lucas off 2010 - Lucas Leiva was sent off in stoppage time of our 2-0 League defeat at Stoke City. Ricardo Fuller put the home side ahead after the break with Kenwyne Jones doubling their lead in the final minute, the first of his three goals past us. Final walk in the park 1920 - We faced Bradford Park Avenue for the sixth and final time when Dick Forshaw struck a brace in a 3-1 win, with Harry Chambers grabbing our first goal. David McLean netted the last of his eight goals against the reds. Willie born 1871 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker was born in Uphall. He joined the reds from Leith Athletic in May 1897, netting three times in twelve reds games before he returned to his former club for free in August 1898. A wee miss 1909 - Winger Bert Middlemiss struck the only goal as we lost our first ever meeting with Tottenham Hotspur, with ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr missing a penalty for the reds at White Hart Lane. Beating the Irish 1981 - We beat an Irish Internationals XI in a friendly at Tolka Park in Dublin, with Craig Johnston grabbing the only goal of the game as Steve Nicol played his first reds game. Igor on his way 2000 - Igor Bišcan was granted a work permit by the Department of Employment, and so was free to join the reds from Dinamo Zagreb when the Croatian season broke for winter at the beginning of December. He moved on to Panathinaikos in July 2005, after three goals in 118 reds games, and helping us to claim two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield, as well as playing a crucial role on the road to Istanbul. Heading to Brazil 2013 – Luis Suárez featured as Uruguay thumped Jordan 5-0 in the first leg of their World Cup play-off in Amman. 2014 – Suárez again represented his country, scoring during the game as well as converting in a penalty-shoot that Costa Rica won 7-6 after their friendly had finished 3-3 in Montevideo. Heading off 1998 - Reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Celtic on loan. He made three first-team appearances for the Bhoys, keeping just one clean sheet. 2018 – Ex-reds midfielder Joe Cole announced his retirement from playing, with Harry Kewell being sacked as Manager of Notts County on the same day. Welcome Dejan 2014 – Croatian centre-half Dejan Lovren signed from Southampton for £20m. He struck eight times in 185 appearances, helping us to claim the Premier League title, as well as remaining on the bench as we won the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019. 2020 – Lovren was sold to Zenit St. Petersburg for £10.9m. On the same day, keeper Andy Lonergan was released, having failed to make a senior appearance, while Adam Lallana left the reds to sign for Brighton & Hove Albion. He signed from Southampton in July 2014 for £23m, notching 22 times in 178 outings for the reds, helping us to claim the Premier League title and FIFA Club World Cup. Arrival of a legend 1938 - Billy Liddell signed as an amateur from Lochgelly Violet for £200, turning professional nine months later. He left the club in 1961, having struck 228 times in 534 games. Happy birthday King Kenny 1951 - Kenny Dalglish was born in Dalmarnack, Glasgow. He signed from Celtic for £440,000 in August 1977 and bagged 172 goals in 515 games, helping us to countless honours, both as a player for which he is fêted by many as the finest ever on the pitch, and later in two spells as Manager. His greatest moments as a player include scoring the goals that clinched the European Cup at Wembley in 1978, and the first half of a League and FA Cup double at Stamford Bridge eight years later, while his efforts in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster ensure he retains an even more special place in our hearts. 1955 - Joey Jones was born in Bangor. He struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. 2021 – Forward Phil Chisnall died. He signed from Manchester United for £25,000 in April 1964, after ten goals in 47 United games. However, he never established himself at Anfield, netting twice in nine appearances, leaving for Southend United in August 1967. For Scotland 1922 - Left-back Donald McKinlay won his second and final cap for Scotland in a 2-1 victory over Northern Ireland at Celtic Park.
