We always win in Wales 2003 - Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen handed us a 2-0 win over Manchester United as we won the Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, to claim our seventh League Cup with Jerzy Dudek being named man of the match. John Arne Riise was playing in his hundredth reds game, while Milan Baroš suffered the rare indignity of coming on from the bench and then later himself being substituted. Happy birthdays 1924 - Centre-half Laurie Hughes was born in Liverpool, just off Everton Road. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in February 1943 and made 326 reds appearances, netting just once. He helped us to the first post-war League title and the FA Cup Final three years later and was the first red to appear in the World Cup Finals later that year. 1994 - Lazar Marković was born in Čačak, Serbia. He signed from SL Benfica for £20m in July 2014, netting three times in 34 games before moving to Fulham on a free transfer in January 2019 after a series of loan spells away from Anfield. 1955 - Forward Kevin Kewley was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in March 1972 but only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, as a substitute for Terry McDermott against Middlesbrough at Anfield in February 1978. He was sold to Dallas Tornado for £18,000 on his 23rd birthday, playing there for five years before moving to indoor side Wichita Wings. He retired from playing in 1990 and was last heard of coaching youth soccer and working in Wichita, Kansas. 1892 - Full-back William Jenkinson was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He signed from South Liverpool in 1916 but only played thirteen times before moving to Wigan Borough in June 1921. 1989 – Ex-reserves midfielder Ray Putterill was born in Liverpool. He starred in the victorious 2007 FA Youth Cup campaign and started training at Melwood later that summer. He scored on his first appearance for the senior side, in a 3-0 friendly win at Crewe Alexandra in August 2007, and featured on the bench in our Carling Cup tie at Reading a month later. He was released in the summer of 2009. Luis at the treble 2013 – Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick in our 4-0 win at Wigan Athletic to take him past twenty League goals for the season, after Stewart Downing had headed in an early opener. Most recently 2022 – We beat Norwich City 2-1 in the FA Cup Fifth Round at Anfield on our way to claiming the trophy for the eighth time. Takumi Minamino struck twice in the first half. To and fro with the Toffees 1934 – Forward Tosh Johnson signed from Everton, with whom he had won the League and FA Cup. However, he was past his best by the time he arrived at Anfield. He played 38 times for us, notching eight times before joining Darwen in August 1936. 1927 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw was sold to Everton for £3,750. He won two League titles after joining the reds in July 1919, scoring an impressive 124 times in 288 games. He has the unique honour of being the only player ever to claim League championship medals with both Merseyside clubs, helping the Blues to the title in his first full season across the park. 1922 – Welsh forward Billy Matthews moved on to Bristol City. After eight goals in thirteen Wartime reds games, he signed on from Colwyn Bay in 1918, netting four times in nine senior outings. A Fab strike 2008 - Fábio Aurélio scored his first reds goal as we won 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers. We opened the scoring when keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen spilled a Steven Gerrard shot that was heading wide and knocked it into his own net. Ryan Babel also got on the scoresheet as he completed his first full ninety minutes in the League, while Avi Cohen’s son Tamir scored for the Trotters. Red centurions 2016 – Keeper Simon Mignolet played his hundredth League game for the reds as we gained some revenge for our League Cup Final defeat three days earlier by beating Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield. Adam Lallana and James Milner scored in the first half, with Roberto Firmino on target after the break. 1907 – We lost a top-flight encounter 1-0 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground, with Ned Doig saving a penalty from George Dorsett. 1968 - Tommy Smith made his 150th consecutive reds appearance, in a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Roger Hunt bagged our goal, with Derek Dougan netting one of his four against the reds. 1985 – John Wark netted the only goal of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Anfield from the spot as Ian Rush played his 200th game for the club. Back to the Cottage 2002 - We beat Fulham 2-0 in what was billed as our last ever match at Craven Cottage, thanks to goals from Nicolas Anelka and Jari Litmanen. The game will also be remembered for a stunning last-ditch tackle from Stéphane Henchoz to deny Steve Marlet a goal. Stephen Wright played his 21st and final senior reds game that day. 1957 - We also won there in a Second Division match, with John Evans bagging his 53rd and final reds goal and Billy Liddell also on target in our 2-1 victory. Elton John’s cousin Roy Dwight scored the last of his four goals against us. Anfield trebles 1898 - Derby County trounced us 5-1 at Anfield in an FA Cup Third Round replay, with three from John Boag, one of only two FA Cup hat-tricks we have conceded and the first of his six strikes past ud. Frank Becton bagged our consolation from the spot as forwards Dan Cunliffe and Abe Hartley, and centre-half Joe McQue all played their final reds games. Steve Bloomer bagged two of his fourteen goals against us. 1895 – We won in the League by the same score in L4 when Jimmy Ross nabbed a brace and Davy Hannah, Harry Bradshaw and Neil Kerr were also on the scoresheet, with this being Kerr’s third and final goal for the reds. 1932 - A more welcome hat-trick was scored by Gordon Hodgson, one of his seventeen for the club, in a 4-1 home League win over West Bromwich Albion, when Gordon Gunson also netted. Billy ‘Ginger’ Richardson bagged the first of his nine strikes against the reds. Beginnings and ends 1986 - We won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur live on TV with Steve Perryman playing his final Spurs game, his 655th in the League. Ian Rush bagged his twentieth goal of the season in the final minute, with Jan Mølby also netting past ex-red Ray Clemence after Chris Waddle had given the home side an early lead. 1935 – Forward Sam English netted his 26th and final reds goal as we lost 3-2 at Grimsby Town in the top flight with Gordon Hodgson also on target. Pat Glover struck twice for the Mariners, with Ben Burley also on target. 1913 - Scottish centre-half Robert Neill died. He stood at only five foot four inches but won five full international caps. He signed from Hibernian in May 1896 after a loan spell, netting three times in 27 reds games before joining Rangers in April 1897, with whom he won the League and Cup. 1912 - Forward Billy Lacey made his reds bow in a 1-1 League draw at home to Middlesbrough, with Tom Miller grabbing our goal, his first of 56 for the club. European Cup defeats 1977 - We lost 1-0 at Saint-Étienne in the Third Round first leg, but of course famously fought back to qualify for the Semi-finals in the Anfield return. Dominique Bathenay volleyed the only goal of the game, after Steve Heighway had hit the post at the other end. 1983 - We were less fortunate, losing 2-0 at Widzew Lódz at the same stage before only winning 3-2 at Anfield. Bruce Grobbelaar was culpable for the first goal as he dropped a cross. International firsts 1889 - Anfield hosted its first ever international as England trounced Ireland 6-1 in the British International Championships. 1960 - Future red Ian St. John bagged a brace on his debut for Scotland Under-23’s as they drew 4-4 with England at Ibrox. Jimmy Greaves netted a treble for the English. 2010 – Robbie Keane won his first cap while on loan with Celtic as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to Brazil at the Emirates Stadium. Mario Balotelli won his sixteenth and last cap while playing alongside fellow future red Fabio Borini for Italy Under-21’s in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Péter Gulácsi’s Hungary. David N’Gog, future red Mamadou Sakho and ex-red Mikel San José also featured for the Under-21’s on the same day, with Chris Mavinga playing for France Under-19’s. 2012 – Mohamed Salah played in Egypt’s goalless friendly draw with DR Congo in Qatar. 1901 - Right-half Maurice Parry became our first Welsh international, in their 1-1 draw with Scotland in Wrexham, with ex-reds half-back Barney Battles appearing for the Scots. 1903 - Parry won his seventh cap in their 2-1 defeat by England in Portsmouth, again in the British International Championships. On the move 1998 - Nigel Spackman resigned as Manager of Sheffield United after seven months in charge, following the sale of several players for financial reasons. 1995 - David Burrows signed for Coventry City from Everton for £1.1m. He played 130 times as the Sky Blues held their own in the top flight. 2000 - Reserves striker Jon Newby joined Crewe Alexandra on loan. He failed to score in six first-team appearances. 2012 – Defender Stephen Wright signed for Wrexham, notching once in 39 outings before moving on to Welsh Premier League side Aberystwyth Town in September 2014. 2020 - Daniel Sturridge received a four-month worldwide ban for breaching betting rules, having his contract with Trabzonspor terminated by mutual consent on the same day. Meanwhile, Academy coach Neil Critchley was appointed Manager of Blackpool. Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 2001 – Midfielder Jake Cain was born in Wigan. He signed as a professional in September 2019, making his only senior appearance in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020. He moved on to Swindon Town in January 2023. Spurs stuffed 1978 - Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst ever Anfield defeat, despite including their new World Cup winners, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Kenny Dalglish and substitute David Johnson both grabbed a brace, added to by Ray Kennedy and a twice-taken Phil Neal penalty, before Terry McDermott rounded off a brilliant team move to make it 7-0. Into the League 1893 - We played our first ever game in the Football League, winning 2-0 at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Forward Malcolm McVean scored our first ever League goal after an hour, with centre-half Joe McQue nabbing the other. James Henderson played his only senior reds game, while winger Patrick Gordon and forward Jimmy Stott also made their debuts in this game. This was also the first ever League game staged at the Paradise Ground. A busy day 2013 – A whole host of transfers took place on deadline day, with forward Fabio Borini joining Sunderland on loan, while ex-reds left-back Andrea Dossena also signed for the Black Cats on a free transfer from Rafael Benítez’s SSC Napoli. Two centre-halves arrived at Anfield, with Mamadou Sakho arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for £15m and Tiago Ilori signing from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £7m. He struck four times in 94 games in his two years at Anfield, before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £2.6m in December 1996. On the same day, Paul Stewart joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. He scored twice in ten appearances for Wolves, and later joined Burnley and Sunderland on loan, having slipped out of the first team picture at Anfield. 2014- Cameroon-born centre-back Stephen Sama left the reds to sign for VfB Stuttgart having failed to make a senior appearance since arriving from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in July 2009. 2015 – The capture of Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza from Internacional for a reported £500,000 was announced, with his loan departure to Finnish club Seinäjoen Jalkapallokerho also revealed on the same day. 2019 – Winger Ryan Kent was sold to Rangers for £7m after a successful loan spell in which he had struck six times in 43 appearances. On the same day, keeper Shamal George joined Marine on loan and forward Bobby Duncan was sold to Fiorentina for €2m. Meanwhile, Martin Škrtel was released after less than a month with Atalanta and signed for İstanbul Başakşehir on the same day. Nice one Cyril 1939 - Cyril Done scored the only goal of the game on his reds debut at home to Chelsea, the day after Germany invaded Poland, and the day before Britain declared war, which resulted in the cancellation of the football season, so he had to wait until October 1946 to make his official reds bow. Full-back Jim Harley was sent off. Out-gunned We have faced Arsenal four times in top-flight matches on this day in history, without securing victory. 1905 - We lost 3-1 at Woolwich Arsenal with Bobby Robinson bagging our consolation, and Sam Raybould missing a penalty in our first game of the season. Jack Parkinson broke his wrist in this match, keeping him out of the side for six months. We finished the game with nine men after Billy Dunlop twisted his knee. Tim Coleman netted the first of his nine goals against the reds, with ex-red CharlIe Satterthwaite and Jimmy Blair also on the scoresheet. 1911 - We returned to the Manor Ground for another season opener, when John McConnell scored his only reds goal with Samual Gilligan also netting as we left with a 2-2 draw. 1922 - We lost 1-0 to Arsenal at Highbury, thanks to an Arthur Hutchins penalty. 2012 – Loanee Nuri Şahin made his reds bow as the Gunners comfortably won 2-0 at Anfield, with Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla bagging the goals. Billy Flint put through his own net, with Dick Forshaw also scoring inside the opening half hour. Double debutants 1972 - Keeper Frank Lane played the first of his two senior reds games, unfortunately conceding an own goal, often attributed to Alan Hinton, as we lost 2-1 at League champions Derby County, despite John Toshack putting us in front. Midfielder Peter Cormack also made his reds bow in this match. John O’Hare scored the last of his six goals past us for the home side. Ged’s double century 2002 - We were held at home by Newcastle United to a 2-2 draw in the 200th match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge. Ex-United player Dietmar Hamann struck before Michael Owen converted a penalty. However, late goals from Gary Speed and one of Alan Shearer’s eight past us levelled the match. 1953 - We also faced the Geordies, leaving St. James’ Park on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline, with the legendary Jackie Milburn and Vic Keeble adding to the last two of Robert Mitchell’s eight strikes against the reds. Syd’s last 1936 – We were trounced 6-2 at Portsmouth with Alf Hanson and Berry Nieuwenhuys netting our goals as inside-left Syd Roberts played his 62nd and final reds game. Fred Worrall scored one of his four goals against the reds, Jack Weddle struck the last of his five, Cliff Parker bagged two of his five and Billy Bagley also scored twice. He became the club’s then youngest ever player when he debuted at Hull City in May 2010 aged just sixteen years and 250 days. He was sold to Queens Park Rangers in August 2014, scoring twice in 39 outings before moving on to Nottingham Forest in June 2018. 2006 – Midfielder Afolami Onanuga was born. He joined the reds as an Under-11, turning pro in November 2023. The very beginning 1892 - We played our first ever game, beating reigning Midland League champions Rotherham Town 7-1 in a friendly that kicked off at Anfield at 5.30pm on a Thursday evening. 1894 - We played our first ever First Division game, drawing 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Harry Bradshaw putting the reds in front before Coombe Hall equalised for the home side. He played 468 times in eighteen seasons at Anfield, winning two League titles before joining Belfast Celtic as Player/Manager in June 1934. Crossing the park 1962 - Winger Johnny Morrissey was sold to Everton for £10,000. He had signed on as a professional in April 1957, netting six times in 37 reds games. He scored fifty goals in 314 appearances for the Blues, helping them to two League titles. Facing the Foxes 2018 – New keeper Alisson Becker was robbed while trying to play out from the back leading to Rachid Ghezzal’s consolation as we won 2-1 at Leicester City. The glory of Istanbul 2005 - We claimed the European Cup for the fifth time as we came from 3-0 down against the mighty AC Milan in Istanbul to triumph after a penalty shoot-out. Paolo Maldini scored before Hernan Crespo bagged a brace, with the reds having a strong penalty claim for handball turned down as well as losing Harry Kewell to injury half-way through the first period. The fans and team inspired each other in the second half as we began our comeback through skipper Steven Gerrard, whose goal was the only header of that season’s victorious European campaign. Vladimír Šmicer then struck his nineteenth reds goal in his 184th and final game for the club, before Xabi Alonso saw his penalty saved but tucked away the rebound, just six minutes after Gerrard’s goal. We hung on to the 3-3 scoreline through the rest of normal and extra time, with Jerzy Dudek making an incredible double save from Andriy Shevchenko. An amazing night was completed as we won the penalty shoot-out 3-2, with Dietmar Hamann, Djibril Cissé and Šmicer converting their spot-kicks and Dudek dancing on the goal-line. The glory that was Rome 1977 – This day brought one of only a couple of other days that can vie with Istanbul as the most glorious day in our history, as we claimed the European Cup for the first time. Our opponents were Borussia Mönchengladbach, who we had beaten in the UEFA Cup Final four years earlier. Rainer Bonhof hit the post for the Germans before Terry McDermott opened the scoring after half an hour, although Alan Simonsen equalised shortly after half-time, capitalising on a loose Jimmy Case back-pass. After sustaining heavy German pressure, we regained the lead when Tommy Smith rose to head in magnificently from a corner, in what was then assumed to be his final outing. Seven minutes from time, Kevin Keegan, playing in his 323rd and last reds match, was felled by Berti Vogts in the area, and Phil Neal stepped up to convert from the spot. Then the party could really start. This game remains our only other first-class game on this day in history. Heading off 2006 - Fernando Morientes was sold to Valencia for a reported £3m after twelve goals in 61 reds games. He had joined for £6.3m from Real Madrid in January 2005, but failed to fully convince in a reds shirt. However, he did help us to claim the FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in his time at Anfield. 1954 – Utility player Bill Jones’s contract with the reds expired. He signed from Hayfield St. Matthews in September 1938 and scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. Mighty Mouse starts out 1971 - Kevin Keegan played his first reds game as we lost 3-2 at Danish side AGF Århus, with Bobby Graham and Jack Whitham netting our goals. Births and deaths 1999 – Centre-half Ibrahima Konaté was born in Paris. He signed from RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. for £36m in July 2021, notching three times in ninety outings before his 25th birthday, already helping us to claim the FA Cup and two League Cups. 1994 – Reserves forward Samed Yeşil was born in Dusseldorf. He signed for a reported £1m from Bayer 04 Leverkusen in August 2012, making two senior reds appearances before being released in June 2016. 1974 – Former sub keeper Robbie Holcroft was born in Skelmersdale. He sat on our bench five times in the early 1990’s. 1948 – Inside-forward Charlie Satterthwaite died. A Milanese arrival 2001 - Milan Baroš officially completed his signing from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m. He grabbed a total of 27 goals in 108 reds games, helping us to claim the Worthington Cup in 2003 and the Champions League two years later before joining Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005. The knight departs 1969 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was sold to Bolton Wanderers for £33,000, after ten years at Anfield. In that time, he had struck a then-record 286 times in 492 reds games, helping us to two League titles, the Second Division championship, our first FA Cup win in 1965 and an FA Charity Shield. He remains our record League goalscorer, with 245 strikes. He is also revered among older Wanderers’ fans after 25 goals in 84 games. 1953 – Keeper Dave Underwood signed from Watford for £7,000, playing fifty reds games before returning to Vicarage Road in July 1956. Ton up for Nando 2009 – Fernando Torres played his hundredth reds game as we beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 at Anfield, coming off the bench to add to David N’Gog’s early headed goal. Charles N’Zogbia bagged an injury time consolation after Jason Scotland had struck the crossbar for the visitors. Mo again 2021 – Mohamed Salah struck in his third consecutive reds game as we beat Newcastle United 3-1 at Anfield. Ex-red Jonjo Shelvey gave the visitors the lead before Diogo Jota equalised. Salah put us ahead just four minutes later, with Trent Alexander-Arnold adding a late third from distance. Mixed fortunes against the mancs 2018 – We beat Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield, with right-back Nathaniel Clyne reaching a century of reds games. Sadio Mané put us ahead before an Alisson error enabled Jesse Lingard to equalise. However, substitute Xherdan Shaqiri’s brace handed us victory. 2007 - Manchester United kept their fourth consecutive League clean sheet at Anfield, a joint record for any club, as Carlos Tévez struck the only goal of the game, the first of his four to date past us. A start and an end 1939 – Billy Liddell played his first reds game as we lost 1-0 to Preston North End in a friendly at Anfield that was billed as a “Grand Match”. 1992 – We lost 2-1 after extra time at Crystal Palace in a League Cup Fourth Round replay, with Mike Marsh bagging our goal from the spot as defender Nicky Tanner appeared for the 59th and last time. A Bridge too far 2001 - We were thumped 4-0 at Stamford Bridge by Chelsea, our hundredth Premier League defeat, despite many commentators naming Blues keeper Carlo Cudicini as their man of the match, with his saves including a penalty from Gary McAllister. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagged one of his seven strikes against the reds, with Graeme Le Saux, Sam Dalla Bona and Eiður Guðjohnsen all also on target. 1989 - We won 5-2 in west London with Ian Rush grabbing a brace against ex-red Bobby Campbell’s side. Our other goals came from Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon and Ray Houghton. Dave Beasant saved a penalty from Jan Mølby, while Houghton had a goal disallowed. A Welsh foursome 1944 - Future reds boss Don Welsh scored four goals, including a penalty, as we thumped Tranmere Rovers 5-1 at Prenton Park in a Wartime League game. Jackie Campbell bagged the other. Mixed fortunes against the Blades 1905 - Jack Cox was on target as we won 2-1 at Sheffield United as right-half Maurice Parry bagged his fourth and last reds goal. 1911 - We returned to Bramall Lane for another First Division match, with Jack Parkinson grabbing our late consolation in a 3-1 defeat as inside-left Ronald Orr played his 112th and last game for the club. No luck against Citeh We have twice faced Manchester City in the top flight on this day in history, failing to claim all the points on either occasion. 1933 - Berry Nieuwenhuys struck early on as we lost 2-1 at Maine Road, with South African-born forward Lance Carr making his reds bow. Alex Herd struck one of his eight goals against the reds, with Fred Tilson bagging one of his six past us. 1967 - Roger Hunt was on the scoresheet while skippering the side for the first time as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Franny Lee netting one of his six goals past us. Hunt and Tommy Lawrence had both separately been stuck in traffic getting to the match, whose start had to be delayed, leading to a hefty fine for the club. Both players eventually abandoned their cars and ran to the ground to try to make kick-off! All in red 1964 - Roger Hunt bagged the only goal of the game in the last minute as we won a European Cup tie at Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht, to reach the last eight by 4-0 on aggregate. This was the first time we had worn an all-red strip of shorts, shorts and socks. We progressed as far as the Semi-final in our first ever season in European competition, where we lost to Internazionale in controversial circumstances. Other defeats 1978 - We lost 1-0 at Bristol City with the only goal being scored by former Blue Joe Royle, the last of his five against the reds. Ex-red Peter Cormack also played for the home side. 1950 – We were thumped 4-1 at Anfield by Wolverhampton Wanderers with Billy Liddell netting our consolation from the spot, his fiftieth League goal for the reds. This was our biggest home defeat for four years as Johnny Walker nabbed a brace, with Roy Swinbourne netting one of his five goals against the reds, and Dennis Wilshaw scoring one of his seven past us. Happy birthdays 1897 - Forward Peter McKinney was born in Consett, County Durham. He struck once in three reds appearances, all in 1920/21, and later emigrated to the USA to join New York Giants. 1974 - Phil Neal’s son Ashley was born in Liverpool. The former Welsh Under-21’s international joined the club in the summer of 2005 after being released by Manchester United, and top-scored with seven goals for the second string. He became a club Director in 1986, remaining on the board for two decades, including a year as Chairman. Royal manoeuvres 2014 – Former reds First Team Coach Steve Clarke was appointed Manager of Reading. He lasted a year in the job before being sacked. 2009 - Brendan Rodgers left as Manager of the Royals by mutual consent, having been in charge for just six months after guiding them to only six victories in 23 games in charge. Other management moves 2008 – Paul Ince was sacked as Manager of Blackburn Rovers, having led them to just six victories in his 21 fixtures in charge. 1976 - 1950’s wing-half Bobby Campbell was appointed Manager of Fulham. Deano moves into the sun 1998 - Dean Saunders joined SL Benfica from Sheffield United for £500,000. He spent one season at the Estádio da Luz, bagging five goals in seventeen League outings, before returning to England to join Bradford City. Sir Roger for England 1965 - Roger Hunt struck as England beat Spain 2-0 in a friendly in Madrid. Ellison’s bow 2006 - Academy youngster James Ellison made his debut for England Under-16’s, playing alongside clubmate Sean Highdale in their 2-1 defeat of Scotland to clinch the Victory Shield in Sc***horpe. 2016 – Future reds reserves keeper Vítězslav Jaroš played for the Czech Republic Under-16’s as they lost 3-2 to the Netherlands. 2019 – Isaac Mabaya represented England at the same level, winning his fifth and last cap as they drew 3-3 with Spain in Alicante. Good riddance 2010 – Reserves keeper Charles Itandje was released. Farewell Crazy Horse 2004 - Red legend Emlyn Hughes died aged 57. ‘Crazy Horse’ signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967 and played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. More legendary farewells 1985 - Phil Neal played his 650th and final reds game, coming on for Steve McMahon as we won a First Division match 3-0 at Coventry City to close the gap on Manchester United at the top of the table. Jim Beglin bagged his third and final reds goal, with Paul Walsh and Ian Rush also netting that day. 1935 – Gordon Hodgson netted his 241st and last reds goal in our 3-2 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield. Lance Carr converted a penalty, with Jimmy McDougall also on target with his twelfth and final strike for the club. Eric Houghton bagged the last of six goals against the reds, with Harry Broome nabbing one of his five. Anfield trebles galore 1907 - Forward Joe Hewitt scored a hat-trick as we trounced Notts County 6-0, as right-half Bobby Robinson netted his fiftieth goal for the club. Management moves 1990 - Mark Lawrenson was sacked as Manager of basement club Peterborough United after thirteen months in charge. Larry fought the law 1972 - Larry Lloyd became the first player to fight a ban before the newly formed independent disciplinary tribunal. He was appealing his dismissal in the 2-0 win over Manchester City back in August. Thumping the Cottagers 2013 – We beat Fulham 4-0 at Anfield in a League encounter, with Fernando Amorebieta heading through his own net before Martin Škrtel doubled our lead. Luis Suárez then struck either side of the break. Brucie besmirched 1994 - A certain national rag printed allegations that Bruce Grobbelaar had accepted bribes to throw games. He eventually successfully sued. Also recently 2009 – We drew with Birmingham City for the fifth consecutive time in the League, this time 2-2 at Anfield. David N’Gog put us in front but we went in 2-1 down at the break, thanks to a goal from Christian Benítez and a stunning long-range strike by Cameron Jerome. Steven Gerrard handed us a share of the spoils from the spot after N’Gog’s controversial fall in the area. 2023 – We lost a UEFA Europa League group game 3-2 in Toulouse, with Jarell Quansah’s stoppage-time leveller ruled out. Aron Dønnum and Thijs Dallinga struck either side of half time, before Cristian Cásseres put through his own net. Frank Magri restored the home side’s two-goal advantage, with Diogo Jota on target late on. Red centurions 2002 - We conceded our 200th goal under Gérard Houllier’s sole charge as Jerzy Dudek dropped the ball at Middlesbrough to enable Gareth Southgate to score. Another thumping win 1918 - We beat Port Vale 4-0 in a home Wartime League meeting thanks to goals from Thomas Green, Thomas Bennett and a Harold Wadsworth brace. On the move 1999 - Ex-red Gareth Roberts joined Tranmere Rovers from Greek side Panionos on a free transfer after a loan spell. He scored fourteen times in 337 games for Rovers in total, moving on to League One outfit Doncaster Rovers in July 2006. 2001 - Alan Navarro moved to Prenton Park on loan. He struck twice in four games before signing permanently the following January. 1966 - Reserves winger Brian Mooney was sold to Preston North End. He notched 43 times in 243 appearances for the reds, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, before moving across Stanley Park in April 1956, where he was dogged by injury before retiring to become a newsagent. 1894 - Northern Irish inside-left Davy Hannah signed from Sunderland. He was the cousin of Andrew Hannah, a Scottish right-back who left Anfield for Rob Roy soon afterwards. Davy struck twelve times in 33 reds games. 1879 – Inside-forward Fred Buck was born in Audley, Staffordshire. He arrived from West Bromwich Albion in May 1903, scoring once in thirteen senior outings before joining Plymouth Argyle in April 1904. 1885 – Left-back Tom Rogers was born in Prescot. He signed from Rossendale United in April 1907, playing forty times without scoring in five years with the reds. Wadsworth passes on 1975 - Outside-right Harold Wadsworth died. He signed as an amateur from Tranmere Rovers in January 1918, turning pro in May 1919. He struck three times in 55 reds games, often featuring alongside his brother, centre-half Walter. He moved on to Leicester City for £250 in June 1924. Red farewells 1907 – Harold Fitzpatrick played his fourth and last reds game in our 2-0 top-flight defeat at Bristol City. Mixed fortunes against the Foxes We have twice entertained Leicester City in the First Division on this day in history. 1963 – We lost 1-0. 1985 - Ian Rush grabbed the only goal of the game late on to hand us victory. Thumping Anfield wins 1912 - Jack Parkinson netted a brace as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-1. Donald McKinlay had opened the scoring in the first minute with the first of his 35 reds goals, with Arthur Goddard completing the scoring. Billy Minter’s consolation was one of his five strikes against the reds. 1940 - We beat Stockport County 5-0 in a Wartime League fixture with Bob Paisley, Arnold Grundy and Berry Nieuwenhuys on the scoresheet, to add to a George Hunt brace. On the move 1959 – Blues centre-forward Dave Hickson revealed that he would welcome a move across the park if the reds were to pursue their alleged interest. He signed four days later for £12,000 and went on to score 38 times in 67 reds games, having grabbed 95 goals in 225 League games in his two spells with the Blues before moving to Anfield. 1949 - Liverpool-born centre-forward Les Shannon was sold to Burnley. He signed professional terms in November 1944 but had to wait until April 1948 to make his reds bow. He bagged just one goal in eleven games, as well as six in fifteen wartime appearances. He is the father of recent Under-16’s coach Dave Shannon. 2015 – Ex-reds defender Richard Money was sacked as Manager of Cambridge United. He had been in charge since October 2012, leading them to the FA Trophy and back into the Football League. 2006 – Future reds keeper Andy Lonergan joined Swindon Town on loan from Preston North End, playing just once for the Robins. 1899 – Inside-left Bill White signed for Queens Park Rangers from West Calder Swifts, netting eight times in 39 games for the R’s. He went on to score within two minutes of his reds debut at home to Everton in September 1901. This was his only strike in six senior games, and he moved on to Dundee in July 1902. Happy birthdays 1994 – Ex-reserves midfielder Jordan Lussey was born in Ormskirk. He was released in June 2015, signing on with Bolton Wanderers the following month after a successful loan spell. 1982 - Former reserves keeper Charles Itandje was born in Bobigny. Also in international action 2021 – Future red Ben Doak featured for Scotland Under-17’s as they lost 3-0 to Italy in a European Championships qualifier in Northern Ireland. 2000 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to FR Yugoslavia. Aldo’s record 1987 - John Aldridge scored in his tenth consecutive League game, including one from the previous season, netting from the spot as we beat Queens Park Rangers 4-0 at Anfield. Their 4-1 defeat by Northern Ireland in Belfast was enough to hand the Ulster side a share of the British International Championships with England that season. This cap was even more special in that Rowley was a Tranmere Rovers player at the time, then in the Third Division. Welsh Englishman 2001 - John Welsh scored for England Under-16’s as they lost 3-1 to Italy in the European Championships at Bramall Lane, with future red Alberto Aquilani on the winning side. On the same day, future red Fernando Torres scored for Spain Under-21’s in their 3-0 defeat of Romania in the European Championships Finals in Durham. Future reds Rigobert Song and Kolo Touré both played in World Cup qualifying wins on the same day. 2002 - Welsh starred for England Under-19’s as they qualified for the European Championship Finals by beating Lithuania 2-1 at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, with future red Jermaine Pennant on target and future reds Glen Johnson and Gary O’Neil also in action. Stan the Irish Villain 1998 - Steve Staunton won his 74th cap, and final one in his first spell as an Aston Villa player, as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to Argentina in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. Phil Babb and future red Robbie Keane also played. On the same day, Abel Xavier won his final cap as an SL Benfica player, and fifth in total, as Portugal lost 3-0 to England in a friendly at Wembley. Paul Ince and Michael Owen both featured. Meanwhile, future red Nicolas Anelka made his senior international debut in France’s goalless draw in Sweden and future red Vladimír Šmicer netted as the Czech Republic won 3-1 in Slovenia. A record for Jameo 2007 - Ex-red David James broke the all-time Premiership clean sheets record with his 143rd shut-out as Portsmouth held Aston Villa to a goalless draw in the Midlands. Willem Korsten equalised before the break with Patrik Berger putting us ahead from the spot with Robbie Fowler also on the scoresheet. 1992 – Ian Rush netted our equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest after Teddy Sheringham had scored the first of his seven goals past us. 1978 – We bet Norwich City 3-0 in L4. John Ryan put through his own net with David Fairclough on target either side of half time. Signing on 1978 - Reserves defender Alan Harper signed as a professional. However, he never played a senior reds game, later enjoying greater success across the park. 2021 – Centre-half Tom Clayton signed a new contract. Wembley derby joy 2012 - We came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at Wembley in our FA Cup Semi-final with keeper Brad Jones becoming the first reds player to make his first four appearances for the club in four different competitions. Nikica Jelavić pounced on hesitation in the centre of our defence to give the Blues a half-time lead. However, Luis Suárez then capitalised on a short back-pass by Sylvain Distin, with Andy Carroll heading in a late winner to send us through to our fourteenth Final. European semi-finals We have played three European Semi-finals on this day over the years. 1976 - Phil Thompson netted in our 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Anfield in the second leg, with Carlos Rexach equalising two minutes later. However, this was enough to take us to our second UEFA Cup Final, after John Toshack’s winner in the Camp Nou. This game set our record home European attendance of 55,104 while Brian Hall was playing his 224th and final reds game. 1966 - Bobby Lennox gave Celtic a first leg lead in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, which we overcame in the Anfield return to reach our first European Final. Forward Phil Chisnall was playing his ninth and last reds game. 1971 - Billy Bremner struck as Leeds United won 1-0 at Anfield in the Fairs Cup, with the last of his five goals against the reds. A goalless draw in the return at Elland Road saw the Yorkshiremen through, where they beat Juventus in the two-legged final. Heading towards Basel 2016 – We staged a dramatic come-back at a raucous Anfield to beat Jürgen Klopp’s former charges Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund 4-3 on the night to reach the UEFA Europa League Semi-final 5-4 on aggregate. We fell two goals behind inside the opening ten minutes, while we still needed to score twice in the final twelve minutes after Divock Origi scored in his third consecutive reds game with Philippe Coutinho also on target as we trailed 3-2 on the night. Mamadou Sakho nodded in before his centre-back partner Dejan Lovren headed in an injury-time winner. Red centurions 2019 – Gini Wijnaldum played his hundredth League game for the reds as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané headed us in front after the break before Mohamed Salah scored a stunning strike in what was Jürgen Klopp's 200th game in charge. 1973 – Full-back Chris Lawler played his 500th reds game as we beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at Anfield, with Kevin Keegan on target from the spot. 1959 – We lost a Second Division encounter 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday as Redfern Froggatt struck the last of his six goals past us, with inside-forward Jimmy Melia reaching a century of League games for the reds. Four apiece 2009 – We eventually drew 4-4 at Chelsea in the second leg of our Champions League Quarter-final to crash out 7-5 on aggregate. This was our 300th European game, and tenth meeting with Chelsea in continental competition, a new club record. We took a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to an innovative free-kick from Fábio Aurélio, his final reds strike, and a Xabi Alonso spot-kick. Didier Drogba embarrassed Pepe Reina at his near post to pull one back after the break, one of his eleven goals against the reds, with a thumping Alex free-kick drawing the scores level on the night, before Frank Lampard netted. A deflected strike from Lucas and Dirk Kuyt header left us needing just one more goal to progress. Unfortunately, another of Lampard’s eight goals past us then ended the scoring. Also recently 2018 – We beat Bournemouth 3-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, with Mohamed Salah nodding in his thirtieth League goal of the season, and fortieth in all competitions, before Roberto Firmino completed the scoring. 2007 - We were held to a goalless draw at the City Of Manchester Stadium by Manchester City. City’s Joey Barton pointedly ran to the away fans’ section and placed flowers in front of a giant ‘Justice for the 96’ banner before the game, which was played just a day before the anniversary of the disaster. 1995 - We lost 2-1 at Maine Road in another Premiership meeting, with future City player Steve McManaman netting our consolation. Dominic Matteo had the rare distinction of coming on as a substitute, before being replaced himself just nine minutes later. Clubmate Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers also played, while Maurice Parry represented Wales on the same day in their 3-0 defeat in Wrexham by Ireland. 1902 – Winger Tommy Robertson played his 35th and last game for the reds as we lost 2-0 to Derby County at Anfield. 2021 – Real Madrid held us to a goalless draw behind closed doors at Anfield as we crashed out of the UEFA Champions League 3-1 on aggregate at the Quarter-final stage, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain reaching a century of reds outings. Biting the hand that fed 1984 - Ex-reds reserves striker Colin Russell netted one of Stoke City’s goals in their surprise 2-0 win at the Victoria Ground, with Ian Painter also on target. Graeme Souness was booked, taking him to a suspension for gathering twenty disciplinary points. International goalscorers 1951 - Billy Liddell struck as Scotland lost 3-2 to England at Wembley in the British International Championships. 2022 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as the Republic of Ireland beat North Macedonia 3-2 in a friendly, while winning his seventh and last Under-16’s cap. Tom the skipper 1934 - Future reds defender Tom Cooper captained England for the first time as they beat Scotland 3-0 in the British International Championships at Wembley. 1945 - Another red skippered his country, when Matt Busby represented Scotland as they were thumped 6-1 by England in a Wartime International at Hampden Park. Clubmate Jim Harley also played for the Scots. Red arrivals 1909 – Half-back John McConnell signed from Airdrieonians for £80. He netted just once in 53 first-team appearances leading up to the First World War, including one in goal in only his second game! 1897 – Welsh forward Billy Matthews was born in Plas Bennion. He netted eight times in thirteen Wartime games, signing from Colwyn Bay in 1918. He scored four times in nine outings before joining Bristol City in March 1922. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We twice entertained Manchester United in the League on this day in the space of three years. 1979 - We won 2-0 with Kenny Dalglish heading a goal and Phil Neal also on the scoresheet in what the Echo described as “a majestic exhibition of quality football to outplay their FA Cup conquerors” of ten days earlier. 1981 – We lost 1-0, thanks to a goal from Gordon McQueen. Hunt missing 1964 - Roger Hunt missed our trip to Burnley after playing in all of our previous 120 games. Alf Arrowsmith bagged a brace with Ian St. John also scoring in our 3-0 victory. Nominated again 2009 - Steven Gerrard was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year for the sixth consecutive season. The award was later claimed by the veteran Ryan Giggs. Youngsters on their way 2006 - We won the FA Youth Cup Final first leg 3-0 at Anfield, with Robbie Threlfall, Ryan Flynn and Miki Roqué grabbing the goals. We lost the return 2-0 to hang on for an aggregate victory to claim the trophy for only the second time. Other reds games 1990 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Nottingham Forest. New bosses 1959 - Bill Shankly was appointed reds boss, with the intention that he would take over in the New Year. However, he was in place just thirteen days later. He had led Huddersfield Town to 49 wins in 129 League games in charge, but could not get them out of the Second Division. The great man achieved his aim of turning the reds into a ‘bastion of invincibility’ as he led us out of the Second Division and then to three League titles, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield, before shocking the football world with his resignation in July 1974. 2010 - Tom Werner took over as Chairman of the club, following Martin Broughton’s departure. The New York-born businessman co-founded Fenway Sports Group and is also Chairman of the Boston Red Sox. King Billy’s treble 1951 - Billy Liddell scored a hat-trick, including a penalty, as we won 3-2 at Tottenham Hotspur. Sonny Walters bagged one of his four goals against the reds, with Les Bennett also on target. Great evening for the kids 2004 - We drew 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in the Fifth Round of the Carling Cup, with Florent Sinama-Pongolle converting a late penalty to equalise Jermain Defoe’s goal at the end of extra time, one of his six past us to date. The reds won the penalty shoot-out 4-3 as the away end rocked to the brand new ‘La Bamba’ song in honour of new boss Rafael Benítez. Stéphane Henchoz was making his 205th and final reds appearance, with winger Richie Partridge playing for the third and last time, while defender David Raven made his reds bow and forward Mark Smyth appeared for the only time. Jerzy’s nightmare 2002 - A Diego Forlán brace handed Manchester United a two-goal lead at Anfield, greatly assisted by Jerzy Dudek. A late Sami Hyypiä strike gave us hope, and Dietmar Hamann’s fierce drive hit the woodwork, but we lost 2-1. These were the first of Forlán’s four goals past us. Reds farewells 2012 - Phil Taylor died aged 95. He signed from his hometown club Bristol Rovers in March 1936 in exchange for outside-right Billy Hartill plus £5,000. He made 345 appearances at right-half before and after the war, scoring 34 times and winning one League title and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in July 1954, and became Manager in May 1956, staying in the job for three years, but has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. 1962 - Left-winger Alan A'Court scored his 63rd and final reds goal as we beat Fulham 2-1 at Anfield in our first season back in the top flight. Roger Hunt also struck with Ronnie Moran missing a penalty. 1934 – Aston Villa went back to the Midlands on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline. Tom Waring opened the scoring with the last of his six goals past us, but Gordon Hodgson bagged a brace, with Tommy Johnson also on target as right-back Willie Steel played for the 128th and last time. 2022 – Steve Heighway retired from the Academy for the second time. He had been working for seven years, following his previous eighteen-year stint. Mølby off the mark 1984 - Jan Mølby bagged his first reds goal, although it was merely a consolation in our 3-1 defeat at Chelsea. Future red David Speedie and Joe McLaughlin netted, with Kerry Dixon scoring the first of his seven goals against the reds. Thumping the Blues 2021 – We beat Everton 4-1 at Goodison Park. Jordan Henderson bagged his 33rd and final goal for the club with Mohamed Salah also striking before Demarai Gray pulled a goal back before half time. Salah and Diogo Jota then netted in the second half to increase the pressure on Rafael Benítez. Mauled by Tigers 2013 – We lost 3-1 at Hull City, the first time we had lost to the Tigers in seventeen meetings. They opened the scoring when a Jake Livermore strike was deflected off Martin Škrtel, before Steven Gerrard equalised with a free kick. David Meyler put the home side ahead before Škrtel diverted a shot from Tom Huddlestone into his own net for an own goal. 2012 - Daniel Agger headed in the only goal of the game as we hosted Southampton in a Premiership fixture. 2008 – We were held to a goalless Premiership draw at Anfield by West Ham United as we went to the top of the table. A Kop mosaic in support of Michael Shields was held up prior to kick off. Diego born 1982 – Sub keeper Diego Cavalieri was born in São Paulo. He signed from Palmeiras in his native Brazil for £3.5m in July 2008, making just ten senior appearances, all in cup competitions, although he sat on the bench on a further 103 occasions. He moved on to Italian side Cesena for £1.2m in August 2010. A winning debut 1973 - Forward Alan Waddle made his League bow in our defeat of West Ham United at Anfield, with Peter Cormack bagging the only goal of the game. Chris Lawler missed this game through injury, having played in all of our previous 102 League games. Razor off 1981 - Ray Kennedy was sent off for two bookable offences in the first half of our goalless League Cup Fourth Round tie at Arsenal as Terry McDermott played his 300th reds game. Fortunately, we won the replay the following week, en route to retaining the trophy. Beating the Rams again and again We have beaten Derby County three times on this day in history without conceding a goal. 2001 - Michael Owen’s poached effort gave us a win at Pride Park, although the reds had to thank Jerzy Dudek for a string of top-class saves, including one from a late Fabrizio Ravanelli penalty, to keep us top of the League. 1906 - Joe Hewitt nabbed the only goal of the game at the Baseball Ground as forward Sam Raybould played his 200th reds game. 1928 - Gordon Hodgson, Jimmy McDougall and James Clark struck as we won 3-0 at Anfield. European wins 1965 - We beat Belgians Standard de Liège 3-1 at Anfield in our first game of a European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign that saw us reach the Final in only our second season in continental competition. Chris Lawler struck a brace that night, with Peter Thompson also netting in a very bad-tempered game. 2020 – Curtis Jones struck the only goal of Ajax’s visit to Anfield in a UEFA Champions League group game, played behind closed doors. This result ensured we qualified as group winners with a game still to play. Mixed fortunes against the Blades We have faced Sheffield United three times over the years, winning just once. 1956 - Our most recent meeting was at Anfield, when Johnny Wheeler, Billy Liddell, Jimmy Melia, Alan A’Court and Alan Arnell were all on target in a 5-1 Second Division victory. Jimmy Hagan’s consolation was one of his four strikes against the reds. 1923 - Harry Chambers grabbed our goal as we drew a top-flight meeting at Bramall Lane, with Fred Tunstall nabbing one of his eight goals past us. 1900 - Charlie Satterthwaite was on target in a 2-1 home defeat, also in the First Division. Big wins 1979 - We beat Middlesbrough 4-0 at Anfield, with the goals coming from Terry McDermott, Alan Hansen, David Johnson and Ray Kennedy. Ray Clemence was presented with a specially inscribed carriage clock before the game to honour his achievement of only conceding sixteen goals in the 42 games of the last League campaign. 1917 - We trounced Blackburn Rovers 6-1 at Ewood Park in a Wartime League fixture, with Thomas Bennett bagging a brace and Harry Lewis, Arthur Metcalf, Jack Waine and Donald McKinlay all netting. 1945 - We won another Wartime League match, beating Huddersfield Town 4-1 at Anfield thanks to a Billy Liddell brace and goals from Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer. International first and last 1971 – Future red Peter Cormack won his ninth and final cap for Scotland in their 2-1 friendly victory over the Netherlands in Amsterdam, with Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish also in action. 2017 - Fulham’s Fábio Carvalho scored his first goal for England Under-16’s as they lost 2-1 to Brazil in Florida. In and out 2004 - Former reserves midfielder Layton Maxwell signed for Mansfield Town. He only played one game for the Stags before moving to Rhyl the following year. 1997 - Icelandic forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason arrived at Anfield from Keflavík for £150,000. Unfortunately, he never broke into the reds first-team, returning to his old club three years later. 1993 - Jimmy Case joined Sittingbourne from Darlington on a free transfer. He only remained there a month before rejoining Brighton & Hove Albion. 1911 – American-born outside-left Hugh Lester joined the reds, becoming the first player born outside the British Isles to play for Liverpool, although he only made two senior appearances before moving on to Oldham Athletic in May 1913. On the move again 1997 - Bruce Grobbelaar was released from Sheffield Wednesday, having been with the Owls for just over two months, without making a senior appearance. 2012 – Ex-reds centre-half and first-team coach Mauricio Pellegrino was sacked as Manager of Valencia. 2014 - Abel Xavier became Manager of Portuguese Segunda Liga side Sporting Clube Farense, remaining in the role for six months. 2017 - Sammy Lee was appointed Assistant Manager of Everton, continuing his long association with Sam Allardyce who had just taken over as the Blues’ boss. He stayed in the role until the following May. Other reds games 1993 – Jan Mølby scored from the spot as Wimbledon held us to a 1-1 draw in a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Robbie Earle equalised late on with one of his five goals against the reds as we went on to be knocked out on penalties after a replay. 1992 – We drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace in another League Cup Fourth Round match in L4 with Mike Marsh converting a penalty. David Burrows had to be carried off with a ligament injury that kept him out of action for four months. We lost the replay at Selhurst Park. 1934 – Aston Villa went back to the Midlands on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline.
