World Cup winners 1966 - Our very own centre-forward ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt won a World Cup winner’s medal as England famously defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley, after extra-time. Bill Shankly called him “the best player ever to play for my reserves”, but he failed to break through to the first team, later turning out for Aberdeen and Tranmere Rovers. 1997 - Karl-Heinz Riedle, who had won the World Cup with West Germany in 1990, was signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for £1.8m. He scored fifteen times in 76 reds games, and also had a great influence on the young Michael Owen, before leaving Anfield for Fulham in a £200,000 deal in September 1999. Taking the shield 2022 - Darwin Núñez scored on his reds bow with Fábio Carvalho also debuting as we beat Manchester City 3-1 in the FA Community Shield in Leicester as keeper Adrián played for the 26th and last time. Trent Alexander-Arnold opened the scoring in the first half with Julián Álvarez equalising after the break. Mohamed Salah converted a penalty before Núñez headed in in stoppage time. Double debutants 2008 – Forwards Robbie Keane and David N’Gog played their first reds games as we shared a goalless draw at Villarreal. 2014 – We drew 2-2 with Manchester City in an International Champions Cup group game at New York’s Yankee Stadium, with Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling both on target. There was no extra time, with the reds winning a shoot-out 3-1, despite Daniel Sturridge missing from twelve yards as Simon Mignolet made two penalty saves. 2016 – Midfielder Gini Wijnaldum played his first reds game as we beat AC Milan 2-0 in an International Champions Cup game in California, with Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino on target. Happy birthdays 1899 – Scottish centre-forward Willie Devlin was born in Bellshill, Lanarkshire. He bagged fifteen goals in just nineteen reds games, but was only at Anfield for seven months in 1927 between signing from Huddersfield Town and leaving for Heart Of Midlothian. His brother Tom was also a forward in the reserves at Anfield at the same time. 1979 – Physio Chris Morgan was born. He joined the reds in 2006, but moved on in 2016 for spells with Crystal Palace and Arsenal, before returning as a First Team Physiotherapist in August 2020. The Pope is a red 2001 - liverpoolfc.tv website statistics revealed that six priests from the Vatican had signed up to the club’s official site. A spokeswoman for the Roman Catholic Church said, “The Pope is well known as a big football fan and there are computers in every office in the Vatican. It is likely he signed up for the Liverpool website and I wouldn’t be surprised if he did follow their progress.” In and out 1998 - Neil Ruddock was sold to West Ham United for £100,000 after twelve goals in 152 first-team appearances. Stanley off the mark 1995 - New signing Stan Collymore scored his first reds goal after Rui Costa gave Fiorentina the lead from the spot as we drew 1-1 in the third-place play-off of the pre-season Mönchengladbach Trophy. The game was decided by a penalty shoot-out, with keeper David James saving twice and then scoring the decisive final reds kick as we won 3-2. Robbie Fowler and Steve Harkness had also converted, with Steve McManaman and Neil Ruddock proving unsuccessful. 2023 – Midfielder Bobby Clark and winger Ben Doak both scored for the reds for the first time as we thumped Leicester City 4-0 in a Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2023 encounter, with Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota also on target. More debutants 1986 - Barry Venison played his first reds game as we were held 1-1 by a Denmark Select XI, made up of players from Brøndby IF and Lyngby BK, in a game played in honour of the Danish town of Holbæk’s 750th anniversary, with Kevin MacDonald scoring our goal. 1985 - Young forward Wayne Harrison made his reds bow in our 2-2 friendly draw at Crewe Alexandra. Ian Rush and Steve Nicol were on target that day. Ground celebrations 1968 - We won 3-0 at Tranmere Rovers in a game played to celebrate the opening of a new stand. Ian Callaghan grabbed a brace, with Ian St. John netting the other. 1991 - The reds beat Swedish side Ludvika 3-2 at Hillängen, to help commemorate the stadium’s fiftieth anniversary. Youngster Steve McManaman scored his first reds goal in this match, with Ronnie Whelan and Dean Saunders also hitting the target. Losing at Wembley 1989 - We lost the Final of the Makita International Tournament 1-0 to Arsenal at Wembley, thanks to a Steve Bould goal. 1980 - Kenny Dalglish and Phil Neal netted as we beat Dundalk 2-0 at Lansdowne Road in our other friendly on this day. The game was arranged as part of a deal that took Synan Braddish, Derek Carroll and Brian Duff to Anfield for a combined £50,000 fee in 1978. However, all three were already back at Dundalk by the time of this match! On the move 2000 - Robbie Keane left Coventry City to sign for Internazionale in a £13m deal. He had struck twelve times in 34 games for the Sky Blues and went on to bag just three goals in fourteen outings for the nerazzurri, before returning to England to join Leeds United, initially on loan. 2010 - David James signed for Bristol City, having been released by Portsmouth. He turned out on 84 occasions for the Robins before being released in May 2012. 2013 – Former reserves centre-half Godwin Antwi signed for Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt. However, he only stayed there for seven months before joining Sisaket in Thailand. 2016 – Young forward Jack Dunn joined Morecambe on loan, netting six times in nineteen games. 2018 – Ex-reds Jack Hobbs joined Bolton Wanderers from Nottingham Forest on a free transfer, netting once in 27 games in his first campaign with the Trotters. 2019 – Young Welsh forward Ben Woodburn joined Oxford United on loan, netting once in sixteen outings as they lost the League One Play-off Final earlier this month. On the same day, ex-reds winger Toni Silva signed for Romanian side Astra Giurgiu, only staying there seven months. 2021 – Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold signed a new contract. He joined the Academy at the age of six, striking nineteen times in 310 senior appearances across his first eight seasons as he helped the reds to claim the League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. On the move? 2004 - The club’s new stadium was granted planning permission by Liverpool City Council. However, work never began in earnest and the plans have now been firmly scrapped. European champions 2010 – Chris Mavinga’s France Under-19’s beat Spain 2-1 in the Final of the European Championships in Caen. The Frenchman was winning his twelfth and final cap at this level, while Dani Pacheco and future red Thiago Alcântara both featured for the losing side. 1996 - Gérard Houllier took charge of France Under-18’s, with Christian Damiano, as they beat Spain 1-0 in the European Championships Final in Besançon. Internationals on target 1910 - Ex-red Arthur Berry scored for an England side that beat South Africa 6-3 in an FA Tour game in Cape Town. 1995 - Titi Camara struck his first two goals as a Racing Club de Lens player as Guinea beat Mali 4-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Conakry. International bows 2007 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić played his first game for Denmark Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Belgium in a tournament game in Herning. 2011 – Philippe Coutinho won his first cap for Brazil Under-20’s as they drew 1-1 with Egypt in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia, with fellow future red Mohamed Salah also featuring. Also in international action 1999 - Brad Friedel captained the USA as they beat Germany 2-0 in a Confederations Cup group game in Guadalajara. 1989 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil thumped Venezuela 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Caracas. -

Sadio sadness 2019 - Sadio Mané was on the losing side as Algeria beat Senegal 1-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations Final in Cairo. On the same day, the reds lost a friendly 3-2 to Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in the USA, with Harry Wilson scoring and Rhian Brewster converting a penalty. Happy birthdays 1926 - Inside-forward Kevin Baron was born in Preston. The Anfield favourite arrived from his hometown side as an amateur in September 1944, signing pro terms in August 1945. He made 153 reds appearances, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, nabbing 32 goals. He moved on to Southend United in May 1954. 1981 - Grégory Vignal was born in Montpellier. The young French left-back failed to establish himself at Anfield, spending much of his time out on loan at Bastia, Stade Rennais and R.C.D. Espanyol. He signed for Portsmouth in July 2005 after being released from Anfield following just fourteen starts and six substitute appearances. 1915 – Left-back Keith Peters was born in Port Sunlight. He joined the club in July 1936, but only made one senior appearance for the reds. Divock Origi was also on target. 2018 – Keeper Caoimhín Kelleher played his first reds game as we won 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers. James Milner had an early penalty saved, but Lazar Marković and Daniel Sturridge were on target after the break. 2008 – Andrea Dossena played his first reds game as we drew 1-1 with Wisla Kraków in Fribourg in Switzerland. Andriy Voronin bagged our goal. 2003 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both played their first reds games as we drew 1-1 with Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road, with Michael Owen on target. The game was a testimonial match for Crewe’s Steve Macauley and Shaun Smith, held over from the season before. Diarra’s day 2002 - We won 1-0 at Le Havre AC as we kicked off our pre-season schedule. Debutant Alou Diarra, who was soon to join the home side on loan, enjoyed the rare distinction of returning to the pitch after having been substituted, as a replacement for Vegard Heggem, so making his only reds appearance. New signings Bruno Cheyrou and El-Hadji Diouf both appeared in a red shirt for the first time, while future reds Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both featured for the French side. 2009 – We lost a friendly 1-0 to SK Rapid Wien in the Ernst-Happel Stadion in Vienna. In the far east 2001 - We beat the Thailand national side 3-1 in Bangkok to claim the Coca-Cola Super Cup in the Rajamangala National Stadium. International beginnings 1976 - Future red Avi Cohen played his first senior game for his country as Israel were held to a goalless draw by Guatemala in the Olympics in Toronto. 2003 – Future red Daniel Agger made his debut for Denmark Under-20’s, netting his only goal at this level as they beat Wales 2-0 in a NI Milk Cup game in Northern Ireland. Yossi to England 2005 - Yossi Benayoun signed for West Ham United from Real Racing Club de Santander for £2.5m. He struck eight times in 72 games for the Hammers before joining the reds for £5m in July 2007, featuring for the losing side in the 2006 FA Cup Final. Moving on 1928 - Forward Tom Devlin was sold to Swindon Town for £250, having failed to make our first team. Left-back Chris Mavinga was sold to Stade Rennais for £1m, while keeper Péter Gulácsi joined Hull City on loan. Mavinga signed from Paris St. Germain in July 2009, joining Belgian side Koninklijke Racing Club Genk on loan in January 2011. He bagged five goals in ninety games for the Prenton Park outfit, as well as taking on coaching duties. Partridge stars 1999 - Richie Partridge starred for the Republic of Ireland Under-18’s in their 1-0 defeat of Spain in a European Championship Finals group game in Sweden, winning the penalty from which the Irish scored. 1998 – He was on target in the same competition in Ireland’s 5-2 defeat of Croatia in Ayia Napia. More internationals in action 2007 - Emiliano Insúa played for Argentina Under-20’s in Toronto as they beat Chile 3-0 to reach the Final of the World Championships. 1991 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared for Brazil in their 2-0 defeat of Colombia in a final round Copa América game in Chile. Grég sees red 2000 - Grégory Vignal was sent off as France Under-18’s beat a Czech Republic side that included future red Milan Baroš 1-0 in a European Championship Finals group game in Bavaria. More moves 1999 - Stan Collymore joined Fulham on loan from Aston Villa. He scored just once in nine appearances for the Cottagers before returning to Villa Park. He was then moved on to Leicester City on a free transfer a few months later, at a loss to Villa of £7m. 2000 - Ex-reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed for Italian side Ternana from Crystal Palace for £100,000. He stayed there for two seasons before moving on to Lecce. 2012 – Right-back Nathaniel Clyne joined Southampton from Crystal Palace after one goal in 139 games for the Eagles. Future Assistant Manager Sean O'Driscoll was named Nottingham Forest boss on the same day. He was sacked just five months later after only leading them to ten wins in 26 games in charge. 2013 – Future reds midfielder Fabinho joined AS Monaco on loan from Rio Ave, eventually making the move permanent in May 2015. He struck 31 times in 233 games for the French side before joining the reds for an initial £39m in July 2018. On the same day, centre-half Ben Davies joined York City on loan from Preston North End, playing 47 times for the Minstermen. 2014 – Forward Steven Gillespie signed for newly promoted Conference Premier side Altrincham. He netted once in 22 outings before moving on to Warrington Town. 2022 – Ben Davies was sold to Rangers for a reported initial £3m, having failed to make a senior appearance since signing from Preston North End for an initial £500,000 in February 2021. Shanks departs 1974 - Bill Shankly resigned as Manager after fifteen years in charge, leaving reds fans bemused and shocked. He had led us to three League titles, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and the Second Division championship. His final significant act as boss was to sign Arsenal forward Ray Kennedy for a club record fee of £180,000, announced the very same day. Razor went on to net 72 times in 393 reds games, helping us to claim six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982. The Wright signing 1991 - Mark Wright arrived from Derby County for £2.2m. With Alan Hansen retired, Glenn Hysén soon to go and Gary Gillespie moving on to Celtic, we were in dire need of a quality centre-back, and Wright was drafted in after his impressive displays for England at the 1990 World Cup. He notched nine times in 210 reds appearances and lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992 before retiring from playing in August 1998. Yossi signs on 2007 - Yossi Benayoun signed from West Ham United for £5m. He bagged 29 goals in 134 reds games, including hat-tricks against Beşiktaş JK, Havant & Waterlooville and Burnley, leaving for Chelsea for the same fee in July 2010. On the same day, second string winger Adam Hammill joined Southampton on loan. He made 28 appearances for the Saints that season, half of them from off the bench, without getting on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, ex-red Vladimír Šmicer signed for SK Slavia Praha. He helped his new club won their first title in twelve years, with Vlad once again suffering with injuries as he struck five times in 23 League games before retiring in May 2010. Keeper Kamil Grabara and forward Dominic Solanke both made their first senior appearances. 2022 – Midfielder Stefan Bajcetic, forward Fábio Carvalho, left-back Luke Chambers, forward Bobby Clark, right-back Isaac Mabaya and forward Darwin Núñez all appeared for the first time as we were thumped 4-0 by Manchester United in the Bangkok Century Cup in the Thai capital. On the world stage 2014 – Future red Gini Wijnaldum struck for the Netherlands as they beat host nation Brazil 3-0 in the World Cup Third Place Play-off in Brasilia, with ex-red Dirk Kuyt also featuring. 2007 - Young reds left-back Emiliano Insúa played for Argentina Under-20’s as they beat Poland 3-1 in Toronto to reach the Quarter-finals of the World Championship Finals. 1998 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel won his 101st and final cap for Brazil in their 3-0 defeat by France in the World Cup Final in the Stade de France. 1989 – Taffarel also played as Brazil beat Argentina 2-0 in a Copa América final round game in Rio de Janeiro. More arrivals 2002 - Bruno Cheyrou was confirmed as a reds player after receiving international clearance, joining from Lille OSC Métropole for £3.7m. He struck five times in 48 reds games before moving to Stade Rennais in June 2006, after previous loan spells with Olympique de Marseille and Girondins de Bordeaux. 2009 – Reserves left-back Chris Mavinga signed from Paris Saint-Germain. He failed to make the first team, being sold to Stade Rennais for £1m in July 2011. Mixed Euro fortunes 2012 - Suso was on the winning side as Spain Under-19’s beat France on penalties to reach the European Championships Final in Estonia. On the same day, Jack Robinson featured as England lost out to Greece at the same stage. 2015 – Future red Kostas Tsimikas played for Greece Under-19’s in their 2-0 home defeat by France in a group encounter. 2016 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-19’s as they beat France 2-1 in a group game in Germany. Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter both also featured. Bowyer on his way 2002 - It was announced that a fee had been agreed with Leeds United for the controversial capture of midfielder Lee Bowyer. He was expected to sign on at Anfield the following week, although the deal fell through after Gérard Houllier grew uncomfortable with the player’s attitude and level of commitment to Liverpool. Red learnings 2000 - Liverpool’s ground-breaking Study Support centre in the Kop stand was officially opened by Professor Michael Barber, Head of the Government’s Standards & Effectiveness Unit for Education. The Centre’s goal is to provide youngsters with opportunities to improve skills in literacy, numeracy, ICT and independent learning, as well as improving their self-esteem and confidence. 2010 – The club announced the appointment of five new staff to the Sports Science and Sports Medicine department. Phil’s sad day 2006 - The funeral of former player, Coach and Manager Phil Taylor’s wife Maisey was held at Thornton crematorium. Also on the move 2019 – Peter Crouch announced his retirement from playing. He had arrived at Anfield for £7m in July 2005, striking 42 times in 134 reds games, despite not notching in his first nineteen outings, helping us to claim the FA Cup and FA Community Shield, but was sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m in July 2008. 2017 – Ex-reds midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven joined Aberdeen from Celtic, netting sixteen goals in 72 games before moving to New York City on a free transfer in June 2019. 2015 – Right-back Glen Johnson signed for Stoke City, having been released at the end of the previous season. Death of a legend 2001 - Legendary forward Billy Liddell died in Liverpool of Alzheimer’s disease. He joined the reds in July 1938 while still only sixteen, and left the club 23 years later, having struck 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1984 – Scottish left-half Jimmy McDougall died in Allerton. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. He moved on to South Liverpool in May 1938 and later set up a successful chandlery business in Liverpool. Moving out 2007 - Luis García re-signed for Club Atlético de Madrid for around £4m after thirty strikes, including five in our glorious Champions League campaign in 2005, in 121 games. He had also helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, keeper Nikolay Mihaylov signed from Levski Sofia. However, he was sold to Twente in the Netherlands for €1.8m in February 2010 after a loan spell, as work permit problems meant he was unable to feature for the reds. 2013 – Jonjo Shelvey left for Swansea City for an initial £5m fee, after seven strikes in 69 reds outings since signing from Charlton Athletic for £1.7m in May 2010. Red death 1949 - Inside-forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers died aged 53. He joined the club in April 1915 and won two League titles in his time at Anfield, scoring 151 goals in his 339 reds appearances before joining West Bromwich Albion in March 1928. He started out in 1995 by assisting John Owens with the Under-14’s. When the Academy opened in 1999, he was handed a full-time role as head of the community coaching department. He returned to Melwood as Director of Academy and Player Development in May 2011, remaining in that role until his departure last November. Also at the World Cup 2010 - Raul Meireles won his last cap as a Porto player as Portugal lost 1-0 to Spain in their Round of Sixteen encounter in Cape Town. Red births and death 1885 – Forward James Garside was born in West Gorton, Manchester. He signed from Accrington Stanley in March 1904, but only played five times without scoring before returning to Stanley in May 1906. 1889 – Keeper Augustus Beeby was born in Osmaston, Derbyshire. He joined the club in December 1908 but only made sixteen senior appearances before leaving for Manchester City in May 1911. 1909 - Forward Vic Wright was born in Bloxwich, Walsall. He struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. 1975 - Outside-left Albert Pearson died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He made 277 reds appearances, netting twelve times and helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining the coaching staff in 1954. He took over as Manager twenty years later and remains the most successful English boss of all time, leading us to three European Cups, six League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. Happy birthdays 1986 – Spanish left-back José Enrique was born in Valencia. He signed from Newcastle United for £5.5m in August 2011, notching twice in 99 reds appearances before being released in May 2016. He moved on to Real Zaragoza four months later. 1983 – Pepijn Lijnders was born in Broekhuizen in the Netherlands. He joined the reds as First-team Development Coach in 2014, leaving the club in January 2018 to take over as N.E.C. boss. However, he was sacked just four months later, returning to Melwood in June 2018 as Assistant Manager until he left along with Jürgen Klopp in the summer of 2024. 1883 – Keeper Peter Platt was born in Rishton. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in May 1902, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. Beating the Blues 1937 - We won the Anfield derby 3-2 with Fred Howe, Phil Taylor and Jack Balmer on target, and Alex Stevenson bagging a brace for the Blues. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. He left for Huddersfield Town in 1982. 1904 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was born in Coylton, Ayrshire. He signed from St. Mirren in February 1928 for £4,000 and struck four times in 254 reds games. He failed to win any honours during his spell at Anfield but had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren before joining the reds. He was a member of the Sunderland team that won the League title in 1936, having moved to Wearside in November 1935. He had also scored in the previous first-class reds game in which he had played - seven years before, just before the outbreak of war when the season was cancelled. Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War! 1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th reds game, while left-half Samuel Hignett made his only senior appearance for the club. Fastest treble 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored the fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history, taking just six minutes and twelve seconds to net three times in our groups stage game at Rangers. Scott Arfield gave the home side the lead, but we romped home as 7-1 winners with Roberto Firmino netting either side of the break before Darwin Núñez scored. Salah then arrived from the bench to grab his treble, with Harvey Elliott completing the scoring. Reds come into the world 1867 - Right-half Rab Howell was born in Sheffield. He went on to become the only true Romany to play for England, playing 67 reds games without scoring after signing from Sheffield United for £200 in April 1898. He left for Preston North End in June 1901. 1897 - Forward Sam Bowyer was born in Northwich. He signed from Earlestown in March 1907, grabbing sixteen goals in 48 reds games before leaving for Bedminster in 1912. 1987 - Former reserves attacking midfielder Besian Idrizaj was born in Baden in Austria. He was actually a Kosovan-Albanian and was voted the best young player in the Austrian equivalent of the Championship shortly before moving to England. He signed from Linzer ASK for an initial £190,000 in August 2005 and made his first senior appearance in our friendly at Crewe Alexandra back in July 2006, netting a treble at Wrexham a year later, but failed to make the first-team squad, sadly dying aged just 22 in May 2010. Sammy the champion 1982 - Sammy Lee skippered England Under-21’s as they lost 3-2 to West Germany in Bremen in the second leg of the Final of the European Championships. Roger Hunt grabbed our goal, with home defender Gheorghe Florea sent off late on in a bruising encounter. The tie ended level at 3-3 on aggregate and, as this was before the away goals rule, a third game was needed, which we won in Brussels a week later. Bill’s treble 1938 – Forward Bill Kinghorn scored a hat-trick as we thumped Blackburn Rovers 6-1 in the second replay of our Lancashire Senior Cup First Round tie. John Browning bagged a brace, with Ted Harston also netting. Saints beaten 1985 - Steve McMahon scored the only goal of the game as we beat Southampton 1-0 at Anfield. In comes José 2011 – Left-back José Enrique signed from Newcastle United for £5.5m. The Italian striker signed from AC Milan for £16m in August 2014, only scoring four times in 28 games in his one season at Anfield, spending s campaign back on loan at AC Milan before joining Nice on a fee transfer in August 2016. 2010 - He joined Manchester City from Internazionale for €21.8m after 28 goals in 86 games for the nerazzurri. 1948 – Former first-team coach Patrice Bergues was born in Créteil, France. He worked with Gérard Houllier at Anfield between 1998 and 2001, later working with him at Olympique Lyonnais. 1997 – Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi was born in Ilorin. He signed from Imperial Academy for £400,000 in August 2015, spending most of his time since out on loan before being sold to Union Berlin for £6.5m in July 2021. Joy in Charity We have twice claimed the FA Charity Shield on this day over the years. 1989 - Glenn Hysén made his reds debut as Peter Beardsley scored the only goal of the game against Arsenal at Wembley, in his hundredth reds match. Later, an Ian Rush header struck the post, landing in keeper John Lukic’s arms. 2001 - We made our third trip to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff inside six months, as a Gary McAllister penalty and Michael Owen strike handed us a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Manchester United. John Arne Riise made his reds bow in this game, which was the first eleven-a-side first-class match to be played indoors, as the stadium’s roof was closed against the rain. Other signings 1982 – Forward David Hodgson arrived from Middlesbrough for £450,000. International milestones 2009 - Sami Hyypiä won his hundredth senior cap, captaining Finland in their 1-0 friendly defeat by Sweden in Solna. This was his first cap as a Bayer 04 Leverkusen player, while fellow ex-red Jari Litmanen played his 125th international. On the same day, Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his fiftieth cap for Greece, his final one as an A.E.K Athens player, as Greece lost 2-0 to Poland in Chorzów. Javier Mascherano also reached a half century of international appearances, skippering Argentina as they beat Russia 3-2 in a friendly in Moscow, with future red Maxi Rodríguez also in action. Stan’s treble 1996 - Stan Collymore bagged a hat-trick in our 4-0 victory at Burnley in a pre-season friendly. Robbie Fowler completed the scoring. Beating City We have twice beaten Manchester City at Anfield in League encounters on this day over the years. 1969 - We won 3-2 with a goal from Roger Hunt and an Ian St. John brace. Tommy Smith scored an own goal in this game with City keeper Joe Corrigan playing his first game at Anfield, with Ian Bowyer also on target for the visitors. 1972 - We triumphed 2-0, thanks to an early Brian Hall strike and a late Ian Callaghan goal. However, this game was marred by the dismissals of Larry Lloyd and City’s Wyn Davies. Lloyd later became the first player to fight a ban before the newly formed independent disciplinary tribunal, in relation to this sending off. Steve Heighway reached a century of reds games that day, while Tommy Smith appeared for the 300th time. Off the mark 2017 – Mohamed Salah scored on his reds bow as we were held to a 3-3 draw at Watford, Jürgen Klopp’s hundredth game in charge. We fell behind to a Stefano Okaka goal before Sadio Mané equalised. Abdoulaye Doucouré put the Hornets back in front, with Roberto Firmino equalising from the spot and Salah giving us the lead, which we held until a stoppage-time leveller from Miguel Britos. 2012 - Raheem Sterling scored his first reds goal as we beat Sami Hyypiä’s Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-1 in a friendly at Anfield. Lucas and Andy Carroll were also on target. 1991 - Mark Walters made his first reds appearance, in a 1-0 friendly defeat at Tranmere Rovers. He joined from Rangers for a £1.25m fee the following day, where he had been a big success. Euro anniversary 1984 - We met Icelandic side Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur in a friendly. They were the first team we ever played in European competition, almost exactly twenty years earlier. This meeting ended 2-2, with Michael Robinson and Phil Neal on the scoresheet after we had fallen two goals behind. 1990 - We returned to that part of the world, winning 2-0 at HJK Helsinki, with Ray Houghton and David Burrows on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa both won their first caps as Real Madrid players. Albert Riera struck his final goal for Spain while on our books, with Fernando Torres also netting and Pepe Reina also playing as Spain beat FYR Macedonia 3-2 in Skopje. On the same day, keeper Nikolay Mihaylov won his first cap since becoming a red as Bulgaria beat Latvia 1-0 in a friendly in Sofia. Blackpool firsts 2003 - Michael Foley-Sheridan played his first senior reds game as we beat Fleetwood Town 6-1 in a friendly at Blackpool’s Broomfield Road ground. John Welsh scored his first goal for the first team, with Milan Baroš nabbing a brace to add to a penalty from El-Hadji Diouf and goals from Bruno Cheyrou and Anthony Le Tallec. Ex-reds on the move 1996 - Bruce Grobbelaar moved down the south coast, joining Plymouth Argyle from Southampton on a free transfer. He turned out 41 times in his one season at Home Park before joining Oxford United the following season. On the same day, Northern Irish youth forward Davy Larmour left Anfield to join Doncaster Rovers on a free transfer, having been part of the victorious FA Youth Cup winning squad earlier that year. He played 22 times for them without finding the net. 2015 – Chris Kirkland joined Preston North End from Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer, but only played six times in his one campaign at Deepdale. 2016 – Forward David N’Gog signed for Panionios, scoring three times in sixteen games for the Greek side. 2020 – Ex-reds midfielder Adam Phillips re-joined Morecambe on loan from Burnley, netting ten times in 33 outings in this second spell. He made 62 appearances in this second spell at Goodison, before moving to Burnley on a free transfer three years later. Completing another treble 2001 - We clinched the third leg of our cup treble, beating Deportivo Alavés 5-4 after a pulsating match in Dortmund. Markus Babbel and Steven Gerrard put us 2-0 up after a quarter of an hour, with the German grabbing his sixth and final reds goal. Ivan Alonso pulled one back before a Gary McAllister penalty restored our two-goal cushion before half-time. After the break, two goals from Javi Moreno levelled the match, before Robbie Fowler scored his fiftieth cup goal to regain the lead. Jordi Cruyff sent the Final into extra-time, before a golden own-goal from Delfi Geli, from a Gary Mac free-kick, finally won us the UEFA Cup for the third time. Anfield testimonials for reds legends 2000 – The reds beat Celtic 4-1 in a testimonial for Ronnie Moran. He had struck seventeen times in 379 games for us before joining the coaching staff. The game was also special in that Erik Meijer grabbed a rare brace, with the other goals coming from Titi Camara and David Thompson. 1988 - The reds beat an England XI 3-2 to win the Fosters Challenge Cup, in a testimonial match for Alan Hansen at Anfield. Mick Harford’s header put England in front, before Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush put the reds ahead. Chris Waddle equalised and then Rush added his second. Long before the end the Kop were chanting “Ian Rush come back home”, a wish that was granted just three months later. Farewell to heroes 1959 - Elisha Scott died. He had played 468 games in goal across his 21 years with us, winning two League championship medals in his time at Anfield. 2012 – Kenny Dalglish was sacked as Manager, despite having won the League Cup and reached the FA Cup Final in his one full season back in charge. King Kenny at Wembley 1978 - Kenny Dalglish netted the only goal of the game as we triumphed over Club Brugge in our tenth game to date at Wembley, to become the first British side to retain the European Cup. The King chipped the ball over the advancing Belgian keeper shortly after the hour mark following Graeme Souness’s clever pass to him. Clinching the double 1986 - We secured the second half of the double in the first all-Merseyside FA Cup Final. We became the first team to win the FA Cup without an Englishman in the team, with Ian Rush grabbing a brace, to go with Craig Johnston’s goal in our 3-1 victory after Gary Lineker had put the Blues in front at the break with one of his six goals past us. Even more Finals 1973 - We beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 at Anfield in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Final, to set us on course for our first European trophy. Kevin Keegan netted a brace, with Larry Lloyd also on the scoresheet, while both keepers saved a penalty in the game, from Keegan and Jupp Heynckes. The game had been abandoned the day before due to bad weather, with Shanks bringing in John Toshack for Brian Hall for the rearranged game. 1922 - We played in our first Charity Shield, losing 1-0 to FA Cup winners Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford, the last time this event was staged at the end of the season and the first time it was played outside of London. We were presented with the League title that day as well. Ephraim arrives 1910 - Right-back Ephraim Longworth signed from Leyton. He played for the reds 370 times across the next two decades, without finding the back of the net. He helped us to two League titles and became the first Liverpool player to captain England in May 1921. He then served as Reserve team trainer, before joining the ground staff. Mo the best 2018 - Mohamed Salah was presented with the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award in London, towards the end of a season in which he notched 44 times in 52 games, helping us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. The beginning of the end for Roy 1998 - Roy Evans’ last game as sole Manager came as we lost 1-0 at Derby County in our most recent game on this day, our first game at their new Pride Park, with Paulo Wanchope on target with the first of his four strikes past us as Michael Thomas appeared for the 163rd and final time. We finished the season in third to qualify for the UEFA Cup, twelve points behind Manchester United in second. By the start of the next season Gérard Houllier was alongside him for a short-lived joint management venture. 2010 – Fulham boss Roy Hodgson was named LMA Manager of the Year by a record number of votes, having guided them to the UEFA Europa League Final. He made 48 senior reds appearances following his £3.7m capture from Lille OSC Métropole in July 2002, netting five times, and is now back in France with Nantes. 1953 - Midfielder Ian McDonald was born in Barrow-in-Furness. He moved to Anfield from Workington in 1974, but could not break into the first team. He moved on to Mansfield in July 1975, helping them to claim the Third Division title in 1976/77. Don at the double 1995 – Ex-red Don Hutchison bagged a brace as we lost 3-0 at West Ham United, with midfielder Matty Holmes having opened the scoring. The pitch was actually a converted skating pond! Sam’s farewell 1907 - Sam Raybould left Anfield to join Sunderland. He was the first player to score a hundred League goals for the reds, a feat he achieved in 162 matches. Up against Forest 1966 - We drew 1-1 at the City Ground with Gordon Milne on the scoresheet and Ian Storey-Moore scoring one of his five goals past us. 1989 - We also faced Forest in a top-flight meeting with John Aldridge nabbing the only goal of the game from the penalty spot late on at Anfield, three days after we had beaten them in the FA Cup Semi-final. International goalscorers 1967 - Tommy Smith bagged his second and final goal for England Under-23’s, converting a penalty as he skippered them to a 3-0 win over Austria in Hull. Clubmate Chris Lawler won his fourth and final cap at this level in the same game. 1994 - Future red John Scales netted for England B as they beat their Northern Ireland counterparts 4-2 at Hillsborough. Treble joy 1924 – We claimed the Lancashire Senior Cup for the third time, beating Manchester City 2-0 in a replay of the Final at Anfield, thanks to a Danny Shone brace. Liddell for FIFA 1947 - Billy Liddell appeared for a Great Britain side that beat a Rest of Europe team in an unofficial international at Hampden Park. The game was to commemorate the UK’s re-entry into FIFA. Thumping the Yanks 1964 - We trounced a New York All Stars side 7-1 on our US tour. Alf Arrowsmith and Ian St. John both netted twice with Phil Chisnall, Tommy Smith and Willie Stevenson all also on the scoresheet. Beating the Mancs 1919 – We beat Manchester United 4-0 at Anfield in a game played in aid of the National Footballers’ War Fund. Tom Miller bagged a brace, with John Bamber and Harry Chambers also on target. Released 2006 - Stéphane Henchoz and David Thompson were both released by Wigan Athletic. They had appeared 32 and ten times respectively for the Latics. Youngsters in action 2018 – Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Bobby Duncan both featured for England Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat to Switzerland in a European Championships Finals group game in Rotherham, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2015 – Trent Alexander-Arnold and Herbie Kane played for England Under-17’s in their 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in a European Championships Finals group game in Bulgaria. Meanwhile, keeper Caoimhín Kelleher played as the Irish lost 2-0 to Italy in the same competition. 2008 – Future red Thiago Alcântara played for Spain Under-17’s as they beat Republic of Ireland 3-1 in a European Championships group game in Turkey. 2007 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses scored the only goal as England Under-17’s beat France to reach the European Championships Final in Belgium. 2006 – Ragnar Klavan won his first cap as a Heracles Almelo player as Estonia Under-21’s lost 2-0 to Wales in a European Championships qualifier in Tallinn, with reds youngster Ramon Calliste on the winning side. 2002 - Young red Mark Smyth played as England Under-17’s beat Spain 4-1 in the European Championships third place play-off in Denmark. Meanwhile, future reds Arnaud Buhler and Carl Medjani faced each other in the Final with the game ending goalless before Switzerland beat France on penalties. 2000 – Future red Milan Baroš featured for the Czech Republic Under-18’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Italy. Nearly there 1977 – We were held to a goalless draw at Coventry City as Tommy Smith played his 600th game for the club. This result put our League title celebrations on hold for four more days. Other reds internationals 1930 – Future red Ernie Blenkinsop played for England in their 2-2 friendly draw with Germany in Berlin. 1934 – Future red Tom Cooper captained England as they lost a friendly 2-1 in Hungary. 1969 – Future red John Toshack featured as Wales drew 0-0 with Northern Ireland in the British International Championships in Belfast. 1971 – Steve Heighway played for the Republic of Ireland in their 2-1 defeat by Italy at Lansdowne Road. 1986 – Future red Dean Saunders and ex-red Joey Jones both represented Wales as they lost 2-0 to Canada in Toronto. 1988 – Jan Mølby faced future red István Kozma as Hungary and Denmark drew a friendly 2-2 in Budapest. 2017 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s in their 3-0 defeat of the Netherlands in a European Championships Finals group game in Croatia. -
Triple debutants 2007 - Ryan Babel, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin all made their first-class reds bows as a late Steven Gerrard free-kick secured a 2-1 win at Aston Villa in our opening League fixture. This ensured that we became the fourth team to pass a thousand points in the Premier League, reaching 1,002, and was the first ever live Premiership match shown on Setanta Sports. We had taken the lead through a Martin Laursen own goal before Jamie Carragher gave away a penalty that Gareth Barry converted, one of his four goals past us. Keepers on the move 1994 - Bruce Grobbelaar left Anfield for Southampton on a free transfer. He had played 628 reds games and won six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields in his thirteen years at Anfield. He turned out forty times in his two seasons at The Dell, before moving on to Plymouth Argyle. 2005 - Former reds reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Fulham on loan from Cardiff City, before signing permanently the following January. He made a total of 26 senior appearances for the Cottagers, before moving on to Hull City in July 2008. 2006 - David James joined Portsmouth from Manchester City for a £1.2m fee, after exactly a century of appearances for the Blues. He turned out 158 times for Pompey before moving to Bristol City in July 2010, helping them to claim the FA Cup in 2008. On the same day, Paul Harrison signed for Southport. He made nineteen outings in the Conference as they were relegated. Charity and Community with the Gunners We have twice met Arsenal in the traditional curtain-raiser to the season. 1979 - We put on a sparkling show to beat the Gunners 3-1 at Wembley to claim the FA Charity Shield outright for the fourth time. Our goals came from Kenny Dalglish and a Terry McDermott brace as Alan Sunderland bagged the first of his six goals past us. 2002 - Arsenal’s new Brazilian signing Gilberto Silva scored the only goal of the game to hand them the newly-rechristened FA Community Shield at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Bruno Cheyrou and El-Hadji Diouf both made their first-class reds bows in this game, while future red Kolo Touré made his debut for the winning side. Beglin’s bonus 1992 - A testimonial match for former reds left-back Jim Beglin took place as we beat Leeds United 4-1 at Elland Road. Ian Rush bagged a brace, with our other goals being scored by Jamie Redknapp and Dean Saunders. Spanish moves 2009 – Forward Dani Pacheco signed a new contract to keep him at Anfield until 2012, later extended by a further two years. He broke through to the first team during 2009/10, making seventeen senior appearances before being sold to AD Alcorcón in September 2013. On the same day, Luis García joined Real Racing Club de Santander from Club Atlético de Madrid, after just three strikes in 55 games, including playing in both Champions League group games against the reds. 2008 – Reserves centre-half Miki Roqué joined Cartagena on loan. He bagged three goals in thirty League appearances as they won the Segunda División B and was released by the reds in June 2009. Happy birthdays 1995 – Centre-half Ben Davies was born in Barrow-in-Furness. He signed from Preston North End for £500,000 in February 2021 but did not manage a senior appearance before being sold to Rangers for a reported initial £3m in July 2022. 1913 - Andy Beattie was born in Kintore, Aberdeenshire. He guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff. He managed a host of clubs as well as the Scotland national side, working with Bill Shankly at Huddersfield Town, having played alongside him at Preston North End. 1899 - Bert Shelley was born in Romsey. He played 448 times for Southampton, a club record until the 1960’s. After retiring from playing, he joined George Kay’s coaching staff, following him to Anfield in August 1936. He stayed on as Trainer after Kay’s departure, working under Don Welsh and Phil Taylor until 1959 when he joined the general staff, with his duties including looking after the treatment room. He was still working for the club when he died in December 1971. 1886 – Inside-left Bert Goode was born in Chester. He struck once in seven reds outings after signing from his hometown club in May 1908, moving on to Wrexham in June 1910. Reds in Europe 1960 - We beat French side Nantes Atlantique 2-0 in the first leg of the Friendship Cup, with Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis on the scoresheet. 1978 - Our first win in Austria came when Steve Heighway netted the only goal of our friendly encounter with Austria Wien. 1981 - Terry McDermott struck as we lost 2-1 at Servette FC Genève in Switzerland, with Jimmy Case playing his final game for the club before joining Brighton & Hove Albion. Sami signs on 2005 - Sami Hyypiä signed a new contract that tied him to the club until 2008, although he subsequently extended this for a further year. He played 464 reds games following his £2.5m capture from Willem II in May 1999, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and an FA Charity Shield, before joining Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer in June 2009. 2022 - Harvey Elliott signed a new contract. He has so far netted six times in 66 senior games across his first four seasons, already helping us to claim the League Cup and FA Community Shield. On the world stage 2004 - Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they were held to a goalless draw in their Olympics Finals group game by Mexico in Greece. On the same day, fellow future red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina as they thumped Serbia & Montenegro 6-0. 2011 – Future red Philippe Coutinho played for Brazil Under-20’s in their 3-0 World Championship Finals Round of 16 defeat of Ecuador in Colombia. Harper heads south 1994 - Former reserves defender Alan Harper joined Burnley on a free transfer from Luton Town. He played 42 times in his two seasons at Turf Moor, as they were relegated into the Second Division. Also moving on 1970 – Geoff Strong was sold to Coventry City for £29,500. He made 201 reds appearances after moving from Arsenal in November 1964 for a club record £40,000, netting 33 times and winning a League title medal and the FA Charity Shield the year after helping us to our first ever FA Cup triumph. Sadly, he died in June 2013 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. 2006 - Jon Newby signed for Wrexham. He failed to net in thirteen outings and moved on to Southport in January 2007. 2009 – Reserves forward Craig Lindfield was released. He struck in a pre-season friendly at Crewe Alexandra in July 2006 on his first appearance for the senior side but failed to make a first-class appearance for the reds. 2015 – Future red Xherdan Shaqiri joined Stoke City for a then club record £12m from Internazionale, grabbing fifteen goals in 92 games for the Potters. He moved on to Anfield for £13m in July 2018. International goalscorers 2010 - Steven Gerrard bagged a brace to reach nineteen goals for his country, a joint record for a reds player, as he eventually struck 21 times. He skippered a side that also included Glen Johnson as they beat Hungary 2-1 in a friendly at Wembley, with James Milner winning his last cap as an Aston Villa player. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s Craig Bellamy netted as John Toshack’s Wales thumped Luxembourg 5-1 in a friendly in Llanelli. Future red Dejan Lovren scored his first two goals for Croatia Under-21’s as they beat Norway 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier, while Krisztián Nemeth netted while playing for Hungary Under-21’s for the last time as a red as they beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-0 in a qualifier in Zenica. On the same day, ex-red Robbie Keane reached a century of caps for the Republic of Ireland as Argentina won 1-0 in the first international to be staged at the new Aviva Stadium in Dublin, with Emiliano Insúa winning his second senior cap for the victors and Javier Mascherano winning his last cap as a red. Also in international action that day were Daniel Agger, Nabil El Zhar, Martin Škrtel, future reds Charlie Adam, Christian Benteke, Fabio Borini, Ragnar Klavan, Joël Matip, Nuri Şahin and Xherdan Shaqiri, and ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa, Jari Litmanen, Nikolay Mihaylov, John Arne Riise, Mikel San José and Daniel Sjölund. International firsts 2010 – Danny Wilson made his debut for Scotland Under-21’s as they were held to a 1-1 friendly draw by Sweden at St. Mirren Park. David N’Gog captained France for the first time at the same level as they lost 1-0 to Belgium in a friendly in Vannes. Ex-red Carl Medjani made his senior bow for Algeria as they lost 2-1 to Gabon in a friendly in Algiers. Milan Jovanović won his first cap as a reds player as Serbia lost 1-0 to Greece in Belgrade, with Sotirios Kyrgiakos on the winning side as he made his sixtieth and final appearance for his country before retiring from international football. Andriy Voronin made his first appearance while with Dinamo Moskva as Ukraine were held to a 1-1 draw by the Netherlands in another friendly in Donetsk. Meanwhile, future red Aly Cissokho won his only senior cap to date as France lost a friendly 2-1 in Norway. 2009 – Martin Kelly won his first cap for England Under-20’s in their 5-0 thrashing of Montenegro at The Hawthorns, with future red Jordan Henderson playing his only game at this level. On the same day, future reds Andy Carroll and Daniel Sturridge both made their first appearances for the Under-21’s in their goalless friendly with the Netherlands in Groningen, with Alexander Kačaniklić in action for Sweden Under-19’s. Also in international action 1998 – Future red John Arne Riise played as Norway Under-18’s beat Sweden 2-1 in a friendly in Kapp. 1993 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his 24th full cap for Norway as they ran out 7-0 winners in a friendly in the Faroe Islands. He was then still a Rosenborg BK player. Future reds boss Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland’s 2-1 friendly win in Sweden on the same day. 1982 – Future red Glenn Hysén featured for Sweden as they lost 1-0 to host nation Norway in the Nordic Championships. -
Another charitable win 1982 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at Wembley to claim the FA Charity Shield outright for the sixth time, thanks to an extra-time strike from Ian Rush. David Hodgson made his first-class reds debut in this game. A sponsored run-out 1979 - We became the first English club to wear sponsored shirts when Hitachi was emblazoned on the red kit for the first time during a goalless draw with Bolton Wanderers at Anfield. New men in charge 1991 - David Moores became Chairman of the club. He showed patience towards the Managers he employed to lead the reds, while largely staying out of the limelight favoured by some club chairmen. He sold his stake in the club to George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks in February 2007, becoming Honorary Life President, although he resigned from the Board in June 2009 after this had proven to be a terrible mistake. 2015 – Ex-reds centre-half Sami Hyypiä was appointed Manager of Zürich, being sacked nine months later as they were on their way to relegation. In comes Soto 2009 – Greek centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos signed from A.E.K Athens for £2m, following the summer departure of Sami Hyypiä. Soto bagged three goals in 49 largely solid performances at the back, becoming something of a cult figure for his no-nonsense style before moving to VfL Wolfsburg on a free transfer two years later. On the same day, reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall joined Northampton Town on loan. He turned out five times in his one month with the Cobblers. Trebles at either end 1954 - Forward Tony Rowley scored a hat-trick on his reds debut as we beat Doncaster Rovers 3-2 in our season opener at Anfield. Kit Lawlor bagged a brace for the visitors. 1971 - We were on the receiving end at St. James’ Park as Malcolm MacDonald bagged a treble for Newcastle United who beat us 3-2, the first of his seven goals past us, with Emlyn Hughes and future Magpie Kevin Keegan striking our goals. New reds 1987 - Mike Marsh signed on at Anfield, joining on a free transfer from Kirkby Town. He netted six times in 101 first-team games for the reds, before moving to West Ham United in September 1993 as part of the deal that brought Julian Dicks to Anfield. He is now a First Team Coach back at Anfield. 1941 – Centre-forward Arthur Shepherd signed for the reds. He was on the Anfield books at the same time as his brothers Joseph and full-back Bill. He struck twelve times in eleven wartime games, but never appeared for the reds in peacetime. 1874 – Forward Joe Lumsden was born in Tanfield. He signed from Burton Wanderers in June 1897, scoring twice in just eight senior outings before moving on to Glossop North End in May 1898. Seeing red for City 2004 - Richard Dunne was sent off for Manchester City as they lost 2-1 at Anfield in our first home game under Rafael Benítez, with our goals coming from Milan Baroš and Steven Gerrard. This was the first time in over five years that we had triumphed in a League game after trailing at half-time, to a Nicolas Anelka strike, one of his five goals past us. The wrong kind of treble 2000 - Dietmar Hamann, Gary McAllister and Arsenal’s Patrick Vieira were all sent off as we lost 2-0 at Highbury. Hamann’s red card was later rescinded. Thierry Henry netted the first of his nine goals past us, after Lauren had opened the scoring. Macca off the mark 1991 - Steve McManaman scored his first official reds goal as we lost 2-1 at Manchester City, with Dean Saunders missing a penalty. Mark Wright was injured in this game, and subsequently missed the next 21 games. David White bagged a brace for City, the first two of his five strikes past us, a feat he repeated in the reverse fixture later that season. A striking debut 1976 - New £200,000 record signing David Johnson made his reds bow as we beat Norwich City 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Steve Heighway goal. Bob Paisley was presented with the Manager of the Year award from the previous season before the match. Into the Champions League 2001 - We thumped Haka 4-1 at Anfield to progress to the group stages of the new Champions League for the first time, 9-1 on aggregate. Robbie Fowler scored on his return to the first team after his spat with Phil Thompson, while French midfielder Bernard Diomède played his fifth and final reds game. Our other goals came from Jamie Redknapp, Emile Heskey and an own goal from ex-Manchester United player Mark Wilson. Cyril’s century 1951 – Forward Cyril Done reached a century of reds senior games in our goalless top-flight draw with Burnley at Turf Moor. 2021 – We beat Burnley 2-0 at Anfield, in front of a sell-out crowd for the first time since March 2020, due to previous COVID restrictions. Diogo Jota headed us in front, before both sies had goals ruled out for offside. Sadio Mané secured the victory after the break. On the same day, midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain became a father for the first time, a son. Meanwhile, ex-reds reserves centre-half Conor Masterson joined Cambridge United on loan from Queens Park Rangers, scoring once in 21 outings for the U’s. Kicking off 1948 - We started the season with a defeat, losing 2-1 at Aston Villa in a season when we finished twelfth in the table. Jack Balmer nabbed our consolation with Trevor Ford netting two of his seven goals against us, while Cyril Sidlow saved a Dickie Dorsett spot-kick as right-back Bill Shepherd made his reds bow. Quadruple debutants 2002 - Alou Diarra, Anthony Le Tallec, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Grégory Vignal all made their debuts for the French Under-21’s. The French beat Iceland 2-1 in a friendly held at the Stade André Pestourie in Brive-la-Gaillarde. Future red Alex Manninger won his 1st cap for Austria as a R.C.D. Espanyol player as they lost 3-2 to Stéphane Henchoz’s Switzerland in a friendly in Basel. 2007 – Future red Joe Allen scored on his debut for Wales Under-21’s as they won a friendly 4-3 in Sweden. On the same day, future reds loanee Victor Moses nabbed a brace as England Under-17’s thumped New Zealand 5-0 in a World Championship Finals group game in South Korea, with future red James Milner playing for England Under-21’s. Three for the boss 1943 - Future reds boss Don Welsh bagged a treble as we beat Everton 5-2 in a wartime friendly at Goodison Park. Billy Liddell and Jack Balmer added our others. Robbie again 2002 - Robbie Keane netted in his fourth consecutive international, winning his final cap as a Leeds United player as the Republic of Ireland won a friendly in Finland 3-0. Sami Hyypiä, Jari Litmanen and ex-red Jason McAteer all also featured, with the latter captaining the side as he won his fiftieth cap, although some counts place this as his 49th due to a disputed game against a Mexico XI in 2000. Bruno l’international 2002 - Bruno Cheyrou made his senior international debut for France, as a late substitute for Lilian Thuram in their 1-1 draw with Tunisia in Rades. Future red Djibril Cissé also featured. On the same day, Øyvind Leonhardsen won his final cap as a Tottenham Hotspur player, and 79th in total, as Norway lost 1-0 to the Netherlands in a friendly in Oslo. John Arne Riise and future red Bolo Zenden also played. Christian Poulsen won his first cap while with Schalke 04 as Denmark beat Scotland 1-0 at Hampden Park. Also in international action were Milan Baroš, Vladimír Šmicer, and future reds Paul Jones, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Fernando Morientes and Andriy Voronin. Red Olympians 2004 - Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost 1-0 to Italy in the Quarter-final at the Olympic Games in Athens. More happily, future red Javier Mascherano featured in Argentina’s 4-0 thumping of Costa Rica in Patras at the same stage of the tournament. Diouf on target 2007 - Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf struck as Senegal drew 1-1 in a friendly with Ghana at The New Den in south London. Ex-reds Djibril Cissé and Alou Diarra both featured for France in a B international defeat in Slovakia, with Nikolay Mihaylov featuring for Bulgaria Under-21’s. Strikers on the move 2019 – Daniel Sturridge signed for Trabzonspor after netting an impressive 67 times in 160 reds games since arriving from Chelsea for £12m in January 2013. He was released the following March after scoring seven times in sixteen outings. 2008 – Djibril Cissé joined Sunderland on loan from Olympique de Marseille. He bagged eleven goals in 38 games for the Mackems that season. 2001 - King Kenny’s son Paul Dalglish re-joined Wigan Athletic on loan from Norwich City. He stayed for the whole season, scoring twice in thirty appearances. 1914 – Forward Jack Parkinson moved on to Bury after 128 goals in 219 reds games. Other reds games 1999 – We lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough with Brian Deane nabbing the last of his eight goals against the reds. 1995 – Tony Yeboah netted a wonder strike, the only goal of our visit to Leeds United. 1985 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa. Gary Shaw scored for the Villains with Ian Rush equalising before the break. Future red Mark Walters netted before Jan Mølby’s late leveller. However, there was still time for Nigel Spink to save a Rush spot-kick. 1965 – We won 3-1 at Leicester City with Geoff Strong adding to a Roger Hunt brace. For Shanks 1974 – An informal dinner party in honour of the retired Bill Shankly was staged at St. George’s Hotel. The event was sponsored by the reds players and labelled ‘Thank You Boss’. The menu included Cured Kop Cod and Clear Mersey Soup, with one of the accompanying wines being from “a Shankley [sic] vintage year” of 1972, curiously a year in which he failed to lead us to silverware. Also in international action 1990 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen played for Norway Under-21’s as they beat Sweden 2-0 in a friendly in Tromsø. 1999 – Future red Igor Bišcan featured for Croatia in their 2-1 defeat of Malta in a European Championships qualifier in Zagreb.
