Many happy returns Two former midfielders share a birthday today. 1972 - Steve McManaman was born in Kirkdale. Shaggy struck 66 times in 364 reds games, helping us to the FA Cup in 1992 and the Coca-Cola Cup three years later. He joined Real Madrid on a Bosman free transfer in July 1999. 1974 - Nick Barmby was born in Hull. He arrived in a controversial £6m switch across Stanley Park in July 2000 and netted eight goals in 58 games, including four in our successful UEFA Cup campaign in 2001, before being moved on to Leeds United after just two years at Anfield. 1888 - Winger Jackie Sheldon was born in Clay Cross. He grabbed twenty goals in 147 reds games after joining from Manchester United in November 1913, playing in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. He retired in 1922 after breaking his leg, with his name forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915. Michael’s bow 1998 - Michael Owen made his senior England debut in a 2-0 defeat by Chile at Wembley, becoming England’s youngest international of the century. Clubmate Paul Ince also featured. An eleven-goal derby thriller 1933 - An amazing match against Everton at Anfield finished 7-4, with Harold Barton netting a hat-trick for the reds. Alf Hanson, Tom Morrison, Harold Taylor and Syd Roberts were also on target for us. Dixie Dean netted two of his nineteen derby goals, with Tommy Johnson bagging one of his eight and Jimmy Stein also scoring. On the same day, future red Tiago Ilori featured for Portugal Under-19’s as they lost 2-1 to Sweden in a friendly. Mixed fortunes against the Baggies 1905 – We won 2-0 in a Second Division game at West Bromwich Albion, thanks to goals from Sam Raybould and Jack Parkinson. 2013 – We lost 2-0 at Anfield, with Philippe Coutinho making his reds bow from the bench. Lucas Leiva playing his 200th reds game, while Glen Johnson reached a century of League games for the club. We dominated the match but only put the ball in the net once, when Luis Suárez was correctly ruled offside early on. Trebles galore Barton’s hat-trick in 1933 is one of three reds trebles on this day over the years. 1911 - The first came when Jack Parkinson got all the goals in a 3-0 home League win over The Wednesday, with forward Sam Raybould playing his 200th League game for the reds. Willie Fagan netted our consolation from the spot as Dennis Westcott struck one of his nine goals against the reds and Dickie Dorsett bagged the first of his four, with Stan Burton and Alex McIntosh also on target. Xabi from his own half 2006 - Jan Kromkamp made his reds bow in a thrilling FA Cup Third Round tie at Luton Town. We took the lead through Steven Gerrard before falling 3-1 behind with Djibril Cissé having a penalty saved with the score at 2-1. Florent Sinama-Pongolle bagged a brace with his first goal being our thirteenth from a substitute that season, a new club record, while his second was his ninth and last for the club. Xabi Alonso also struck twice, with our final goal being an outrageous strike from inside his own half, with the keeper making his way back from a corner. Scott Carson made his ninth and final reds appearance in this game. 1939 - We also faced the Hatters at the same stage of the Cup with left-winger George Paterson grabbing his only reds goal in a 3-0 Anfield victory. Jack Balmer added two strikes. At last at the Bridge 2004 - Bruno Cheyrou’s first League goal handed us our first win at Stamford Bridge for fifteen years, as we beat Chelsea 1-0 despite the absence of Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard. El-Hadji Diouf was unjustly sent off, with his red card later rescinded, and Jerzy Dudek went off injured to be replaced by debutant Patrice Luzi for the last quarter of an hour, becoming the 52nd senior keeper in our history, and only the fourth man to never concede a goal in his entire reds career between the sticks, although this was his only senior outing. 1978 - We lost at Stamford Bridge, being knocked out of the FA Cup at the Third Round stage, with Joey Jones playing his hundredth and last game against his future employers. David Johnson and Kenny Dalglish bagged our goals as we lost 4-2. Steve Finnieston netted one of his four strikes past us, with Clive Walker bagging a brace and Tommy Langley also on target. Death of a legend 1968 - Ephraim Longworth died in Liverpool. Beginnings and ends 2023 – Dutch forward Cody Gakpo debuted as we were held to a 2-2 draw in an FA Cup Third Round encounter in L4. Feliz aniversários 1992 – Alisson Becker was born in Novo Hamburgo. He joined from Roma for an initial £56m in July 2018, a short-lived word record fee for a goalkeeper. He kept 101 clean sheets in 231 appearances in his first five seasons, securing winner’s medals for the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and FA Cup. He also dramatically headed in an injury-time winner at West Bromwich Albion in May 2021 to help secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League again. 1991 – Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino was born in Maceió. He signed from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for an initial £21m in July 2015, scoring 111 goals in 362 outings as he helped us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and FA Community Shield. He moved on to Al-Ahli Saudi in Saudi Arabia in July 2023. Farewell to Shanks 1981 - Bill Shankly’s funeral was held at St. Mary’s Church in West Derby, Liverpool. His coffin was carried by four stalwarts from his reds teams - Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes, John Toshack and Ron Yeats - while the service fittingly ended with a moving rendition of YNWA. European centuries 2002 - Emile Heskey’s second goal of our 5-0 thumping of Spartak Moskva in a Champions League encounter at Anfield was our 400th goal in European competition. Bruno Cheyrou and Salif Diao both netted their first reds goals, with Sami Hyypiä also on target. 2019 – We played our hundredth home game in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, eventually beating Salzburg 4-3 in a group game. We went three goals ahead through ex-Salzburg player Sadio Mané, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah before Hwang Hee-Chan pulled a goal back before the break. Future red Takumi Minamino also netted before Erling Haaland levelled the scores after an hour. However, Salah bagged the winner. Other birthdays 1887 - Full-back Ephraim Longworth was born in Halliwell, Bolton. He played for the reds 370 times after signing from Leyton in June 1910 without ever finding the net, but helped us to two League titles and became the first Liverpool player to captain England. He then served as Reserve team trainer, before joining the ground staff. 1891 - Outside-right Archie Rawlings was born in Leicester. He struck ten times in his 67 reds games after signing from Preston North End in March 1924, where he had won one England cap, before moving on to Walsall in June 1926. 1958 - Reserves goalkeeper Bob Bolder was born in Dover. He signed from Sheffield Wednesday for £125,000 in 1983, after more than 200 games for the Owls. He never made our first team, but sat on the bench at the 1984 European Cup Final in Rome, one of seventeen times he did so in Europe's premier club competition, also doing so on four other occasions. He moved on to Sunderland the following year. 1990 – Former second-string custodian Dean Bouzanis was born in Sydney, Australia. He arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2007 and helped the reds to reach the FA Youth Cup Final in 2009. He spent much of the 2009/10 season on loan at League Two side Accrington Stanley, turning out nineteen times in total, and was released by the reds in April 2011. Youngest derby scorer 1937 - Tommy Lawton scored from the spot for Everton aged seventeen years and 362 days, the first of his six goals past us to become the youngest ever Merseyside derby goalscorer, helping to condemn us to a 2-1 defeat at Anfield. Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbed our late consolation, with Ben Dabbs playing his 56th and final reds game. Douglas Trentham had opened the scoring for the visitors. Chelsea despair 2005 - We were humbled 4-1 at home by Chelsea in a League game, with Steven Gerrard drawing us level after Djimi Traoré had conceded a penalty converted by Frank Lampard to hand the Blues the lead, one of his eight goals past us. This was our worst home defeat since December 1969, and the Blues’ third straight League win at Anfield. Damien Duff, future red Joe Cole and Geremi all also struck for the visitors. Tossed out 1968 - We were dumped out of the Fairs Cup, losing on the toss of a disc to Athletic Bilbao. We had lost the first leg in Spain 2-1, with this second leg ending 2-1 in our favour, even after extra time, with Chris Lawler and Emlyn Hughes netting after we had gone behind to a José Argoitia goal. We had been the beneficiaries of a coin-toss win three years earlier, against 1. FC Köln in the European Cup. This time, a coloured disc was used with skipper Ron Yeats allocated the red side and the Spaniards white, according to the team colours. Red was unfortunately not the colour that night. Barry who? 1991 - Barry Jones made his only senior reds appearance as a substitute in our 1-0 defeat in Finland to Kuusysi Lahti in a UEFA Cup tie, although we progressed 6-2 on aggregate. This was our first European trip since the ban imposed after Heysel was lifted. Ex-Wimbledon striker Mike Belfield netted for the Finns on the night, while winger Jimmy Carter played his eighth and final reds game. A derby win 1909 - Jack Parkinson, Jimmy Stewart and Arthur Goddard all struck as we won 3-2 in the top flight at Goodison. Bertie Freeman and Tim Coleman each scored one of their nine goals past us. Representing the League 1963 - Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan both represented the Football League as they lost 2-1 to a League of Ireland side at Dalymont Park in Dublin. Beating the Lilywhites We have travelled to Deepdale to take on Preston North End three times on this day in history, without tasting defeat. 1915 - Fred Pagnam and Walter Wadsworth grabbed the goals as we won 2-1 in a Wartime League fixture. 1897 - We drew 1-1, with Harry Bradshaw on the scoresheet in his hundredth League outing. Keeper Harry Storer saved a penalty from Moses Sanders. 1920 - Harry Chambers, Dick Forshaw and Harold Wadsworth were on target as we won another top-flight encounter 3-2, with Tommy Roberts bagging the first two of his four goals against the reds. 2004 – Future reds keeper Andy Lonergan scored for Preston North End at Leicester City from his own area. This secured a 1-1 draw in this Championship encounter. Up against the Villains 1965 - Peter Thompson struck twice as we beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield in the First Division, with Ian St. John also scoring. Chris Lawler made the first of 316 consecutive reds appearances in this game. 1999 - Our Premiership meeting at Villa Park ended goalless. Steve Staunton was laughably sent off in what was his hundredth League appearance for the reds by Rob Harris for a second bookable offence after half an hour having been wrongly adjudged not to have retreated ten yards at a free-kick. Steven Gerrard then superbly slotted in as our emergency left-back. Four against 1926 - Tom Jennings scored all Leeds United’s goals as they won 4-2 at Anfield in the top flight, four of his seven past us in all and the second of three consecutive League games in which he struck trebles. Dick Forshaw and Gordon Hodgson netted our goals. Double century 1976 – Kevin Keegan played his 200th League game for the reds as Middlesbrough held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Twice against the Tangerines 1935 – We lost a Lancashire Senior Cup First Round tie 4-1 to Blackpool at Anfield, with Alf Hanson on target for the reds. 1946 – We drew 2-2 at Bloomfield Road at the same hurdle. Cyril Done struck twice, including once from the spot. Reds in Arabia 1978 - We drew 1-1 with the Saudi Arabian national side in a friendly in Jeddah with Kenny Dalglish grabbing our goal. Heading out 2020 – Forward Rhian Brewster was sold to Sheffield United after four reds outings, as the Blades paid a club record £23.5m. However, he failed to score in thirty appearances in his first season as they were relegated from the Premier League. 1990 - Second string midfielder Jim Magilton was sold to Oxford United for £100,000. He notched 42 goals in 173 appearances for the U’s. 1979 - Paul Walsh signed as a professional for Charlton Athletic, a day after his seventeenth birthday. He scored 28 times in 89 games for the Addicks, before moving to Luton Town for £400,000 in July 1982. 2018 – Ex-reds winger Adam Hammill signed for St. Mirren, scoring four times in thirteen games before moving on to Sc***horpe United the following January. Simon on target 2006 - András Simon grabbed the only goal of the game as Hungary Under-17’s won a European Championships qualifier in Armenia. The forward was also booked. Reds bosses in and out 2003 - Mike Marsh resigned as Manager of Unibond League side Burscough, after just over three months in the job. On the same day, reds striking legend Ian Rush was appointed Wales Under-17’s coach. 2004 - Bruce Grobbelaar was sacked as Manager of South African side Manning Rangers. 2008 - Dean Saunders was named as Wrexham boss. He led them to tenth, eleventh and then fourth in the Conference National in his three seasons in charge. International beginning and end 1968 - Future red Jack Whitham won his only cap for England Under-23’s as a substitute in their 3-1 defeat of Wales at the Racecourse Ground. 2005 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin scored his last goal for Turkey Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in their World Cup Finals Third Place Play-off in Peru. Also in World Cup action 2009 - Martin Kelly played for England Under-20’s as they drew 1-1 with Uzbekistan in a World Championship Finals group game in Egypt, while future red Sebastián Coates featured in Uruguay’s 2-2 draw with Ghana in the same group. Other reds games 1993 – Arsenal held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1982 – We lost 1-0 at Ipswich Town with Mich D’Avray heading in late on. 1971 – We drew 0-0 at Stoke City. 1954 – We beat Notts County 3-1 in a Second Division match in L4 as Eric Anderson struck either side of a John Evans goal. 1948 – Derby County held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Fans favourite 2009 - Fernando Torres was named PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for August and September, having netted eight times in seven outings.

The Doc is in 1976 – Ex-Blues forward David Johnson signed from Ipswich Town for a club record £200,000. He went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 78 times in 213 reds games. He was the first player to score for both sides in Merseyside derbies, and returned to Goodison in August 1982 for £100,000. Most recently 2018 – Three reds made their debuts as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 in our season opener at Anfield – keeper Alisson Becker, Naby Keïta and Xherdan Shaqiri. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring, with Sadio Mané bagging a brace and Daniel Sturridge completing the scoring. This secured our 500th Premier League victory. In comes José 2011 – Left-back José Enrique signed from Newcastle United for £5.5m. He impressed reds fans in his early appearances, netting twice in 99 games in all and helping us to claim the Carling Cup and reach the FA Cup Final in his first campaign, before being released in May 2016. 2019 - Andy Lonergan joined the reds, having been released by Middlesbrough earlier in the summer. The reds became the twelfth club of his professional career, but he failed to make the first team, although he sat on the bench on eight occasions, including nights when we claimed the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. 2022 – Leeds-born forward Oakley Cannonier signed a new contract with the reds, having joined the reds at Under-12’s level and turning pro in July 2021. His most significant impact to date has been as the ball-boy who quickly handed the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold for his “corner taken quickly” against Barcelona in our UEFA Champions League Semi-final second leg in May 2019. Joyeux anniversaire 1981 - Our former record £14m signing Djibril Cissé was born in Arles in France. His first season was one of tremendous ups and downs, including a horrific leg break and converting a penalty in the Champions League Final. He notched a total of 24 times in 79 reds games, including scoring in the UEFA Super Cup Final and FA Cup Final, but then spent a season on loan at Olympique de Marseille, for whom he signed permanently for £6.3m in July 2007. 1990 – Mario Balotelli was born in Palermo. The Italian striker signed from AC Milan for £16m in August 2014, only scoring four times in 28 games in his one season at Anfield, spending s campaign back on loan at AC Milan before joining Nice on a fee transfer in August 2016. 2010 - He joined Manchester City from Internazionale for €21.8m after 28 goals in 86 games for the nerazzurri. 1948 – Former first-team coach Patrice Bergues was born in Créteil, France. He worked with Gérard Houllier at Anfield between 1998 and 2001, later working with him at Olympique Lyonnais. 1997 – Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi was born in Ilorin. He signed from Imperial Academy for £400,000 in August 2015, spending most of his time since out on loan before being sold to Union Berlin for £6.5m in July 2021. Joy in Charity We have twice claimed the FA Charity Shield on this day over the years. 1989 - Glenn Hysén made his reds debut as Peter Beardsley scored the only goal of the game against Arsenal at Wembley, in his hundredth reds match. Later, an Ian Rush header struck the post, landing in keeper John Lukic’s arms. 2001 - We made our third trip to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff inside six months, as a Gary McAllister penalty and Michael Owen strike handed us a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Manchester United. Triple debutants 2007 - Ryan Babel, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin all made their first-class reds bows as a late Steven Gerrard free-kick secured a 2-1 win at Aston Villa in our opening League fixture. This ensured that we became the fourth team to pass a thousand points in the Premier League, reaching 1,002, and was the first ever live Premiership match shown on Setanta Sports. We had taken the lead through a Martin Laursen own goal before Jamie Carragher gave away a penalty that Gareth Barry converted, one of his four goals past us. Keepers on the move 1994 - Bruce Grobbelaar left Anfield for Southampton on a free transfer. He had played 628 reds games and won six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields in his thirteen years at Anfield. He turned out forty times in his two seasons at The Dell, before moving on to Plymouth Argyle. 2005 - Former reds reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Fulham on loan from Cardiff City, before signing permanently the following January. He made a total of 26 senior appearances for the Cottagers, before moving on to Hull City in July 2008. 2006 - David James joined Portsmouth from Manchester City for a £1.2m fee, after exactly a century of appearances for the Blues. He turned out 158 times for Pompey before moving to Bristol City in July 2010, helping them to claim the FA Cup in 2008. On the same day, Paul Harrison signed for Southport. He made nineteen outings in the Conference as they were relegated. Charity and Community with the Gunners We have twice met Arsenal in the traditional curtain-raiser to the season. 1979 - We put on a sparkling show to beat the Gunners 3-1 at Wembley to claim the FA Charity Shield outright for the fourth time. Our goals came from Kenny Dalglish and a Terry McDermott brace as Alan Sunderland bagged the first of his six goals past us. 2002 - Arsenal’s new Brazilian signing Gilberto Silva scored the only goal of the game to hand them the newly-rechristened FA Community Shield at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Bruno Cheyrou and El-Hadji Diouf both made their first-class reds bows in this game, while future red Kolo Touré made his debut for the winning side. Beglin’s bonus 1992 - A testimonial match for former reds left-back Jim Beglin took place as we beat Leeds United 4-1 at Elland Road. Ian Rush bagged a brace, with our other goals being scored by Jamie Redknapp and Dean Saunders. Spanish moves 2009 – Forward Dani Pacheco signed a new contract to keep him at Anfield until 2012, later extended by a further two years. He broke through to the first team during 2009/10, making seventeen senior appearances before being sold to AD Alcorcón in September 2013. On the same day, Luis García joined Real Racing Club de Santander from Club Atlético de Madrid, after just three strikes in 55 games, including playing in both Champions League group games against the reds. 2008 – Reserves centre-half Miki Roqué joined Cartagena on loan. He bagged three goals in thirty League appearances as they won the Segunda División B and was released by the reds in June 2009. Happy birthdays 1995 – Centre-half Ben Davies was born in Barrow-in-Furness. He signed from Preston North End for £500,000 in February 2021 but did not manage a senior appearance before being sold to Rangers for a reported initial £3m in July 2022. 1913 - Andy Beattie was born in Kintore, Aberdeenshire. He guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff. He managed a host of clubs as well as the Scotland national side, working with Bill Shankly at Huddersfield Town, having played alongside him at Preston North End. 1899 - Bert Shelley was born in Romsey. He played 448 times for Southampton, a club record until the 1960’s. After retiring from playing, he joined George Kay’s coaching staff, following him to Anfield in August 1936. He stayed on as Trainer after Kay’s departure, working under Don Welsh and Phil Taylor until 1959 when he joined the general staff, with his duties including looking after the treatment room. He was still working for the club when he died in December 1971. 1886 – Inside-left Bert Goode was born in Chester. He struck once in seven reds outings after signing from his hometown club in May 1908, moving on to Wrexham in June 1910. Reds in Europe 1960 - We beat French side Nantes Atlantique 2-0 in the first leg of the Friendship Cup, with Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis on the scoresheet. 1978 - Our first win in Austria came when Steve Heighway netted the only goal of our friendly encounter with Austria Wien. 1981 - Terry McDermott struck as we lost 2-1 at Servette FC Genève in Switzerland, with Jimmy Case playing his final game for the club before joining Brighton & Hove Albion. Sami signs on 2005 - Sami Hyypiä signed a new contract that tied him to the club until 2008, although he subsequently extended this for a further year. He played 464 reds games following his £2.5m capture from Willem II in May 1999, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and an FA Charity Shield, before joining Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer in June 2009. 2022 - Harvey Elliott signed a new contract. He has so far netted six times in 66 senior games across his first four seasons, already helping us to claim the League Cup and FA Community Shield. On the world stage 2004 - Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they were held to a goalless draw in their Olympics Finals group game by Mexico in Greece. On the same day, fellow future red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina as they thumped Serbia & Montenegro 6-0. 2011 – Future red Philippe Coutinho played for Brazil Under-20’s in their 3-0 World Championship Finals Round of 16 defeat of Ecuador in Colombia. Harper heads south 1994 - Former reserves defender Alan Harper joined Burnley on a free transfer from Luton Town. He played 42 times in his two seasons at Turf Moor, as they were relegated into the Second Division. Also moving on 1970 – Geoff Strong was sold to Coventry City for £29,500. He made 201 reds appearances after moving from Arsenal in November 1964 for a club record £40,000, netting 33 times and winning a League title medal and the FA Charity Shield the year after helping us to our first ever FA Cup triumph. Sadly, he died in June 2013 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. 2006 - Jon Newby signed for Wrexham. He failed to net in thirteen outings and moved on to Southport in January 2007. 2009 – Reserves forward Craig Lindfield was released. He moved on to Anfield for £13m in July 2018. International goalscorers 2010 - Steven Gerrard bagged a brace to reach nineteen goals for his country, a joint record for a reds player, as he eventually struck 21 times. He skippered a side that also included Glen Johnson as they beat Hungary 2-1 in a friendly at Wembley, with James Milner winning his last cap as an Aston Villa player. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s Craig Bellamy netted as John Toshack’s Wales thumped Luxembourg 5-1 in a friendly in Llanelli. Another charitable win 1982 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at Wembley to claim the FA Charity Shield outright for the sixth time, thanks to an extra-time strike from Ian Rush. David Hodgson made his first-class reds debut in this game. A sponsored run-out 1979 - We became the first English club to wear sponsored shirts when Hitachi was emblazoned on the red kit for the first time during a goalless draw with Bolton Wanderers at Anfield. New men in charge 1991 - David Moores became Chairman of the club. He showed patience towards the Managers he employed to lead the reds, while largely staying out of the limelight favoured by some club chairmen. He sold his stake in the club to George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks in February 2007, becoming Honorary Life President, although he resigned from the Board in June 2009 after this had proven to be a terrible mistake. 2015 – Ex-reds centre-half Sami Hyypiä was appointed Manager of Zürich, being sacked nine months later as they were on their way to relegation. In comes Soto 2009 – Greek centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos signed from A.E.K Athens for £2m, following the summer departure of Sami Hyypiä. Soto bagged three goals in 49 largely solid performances at the back, becoming something of a cult figure for his no-nonsense style before moving to VfL Wolfsburg on a free transfer two years later. On the same day, reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall joined Northampton Town on loan. He turned out five times in his one month with the Cobblers. Trebles at either end 1954 - Forward Tony Rowley scored a hat-trick on his reds debut as we beat Doncaster Rovers 3-2 in our season opener at Anfield. Kit Lawlor bagged a brace for the visitors. 1971 - We were on the receiving end at St. James’ Park as Malcolm MacDonald bagged a treble for Newcastle United who beat us 3-2, the first of his seven goals past us, with Emlyn Hughes and future Magpie Kevin Keegan striking our goals. New reds 1987 - Mike Marsh signed on at Anfield, joining on a free transfer from Kirkby Town. He netted six times in 101 first-team games for the reds, before moving to West Ham United in September 1993 as part of the deal that brought Julian Dicks to Anfield. He is now a First Team Coach back at Anfield. 1941 – Centre-forward Arthur Shepherd signed for the reds. He was on the Anfield books at the same time as his brothers Joseph and full-back Bill. He struck twelve times in eleven wartime games, but never appeared for the reds in peacetime. 1874 – Forward Joe Lumsden was born in Tanfield. He signed from Burton Wanderers in June 1897, scoring twice in just eight senior outings before moving on to Glossop North End in May 1898. Seeing red for City 2004 - Richard Dunne was sent off for Manchester City as they lost 2-1 at Anfield in our first home game under Rafael Benítez, with our goals coming from Milan Baroš and Steven Gerrard. This was the first time in over five years that we had triumphed in a League game after trailing at half-time, to a Nicolas Anelka strike, one of his five goals past us. The wrong kind of treble 2000 - Dietmar Hamann, Gary McAllister and Arsenal’s Patrick Vieira were all sent off as we lost 2-0 at Highbury. Hamann’s red card was later rescinded. Thierry Henry netted the first of his nine goals past us, after Lauren had opened the scoring. Macca off the mark 1991 - Steve McManaman scored his first official reds goal as we lost 2-1 at Manchester City, with Dean Saunders missing a penalty. Mark Wright was injured in this game, and subsequently missed the next 21 games. David White bagged a brace for City, the first two of his five strikes past us, a feat he repeated in the reverse fixture later that season. A striking debut 1976 - New £200,000 record signing David Johnson made his reds bow as we beat Norwich City 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Steve Heighway goal. Bob Paisley was presented with the Manager of the Year award from the previous season before the match. Into the Champions League 2001 - We thumped Haka 4-1 at Anfield to progress to the group stages of the new Champions League for the first time, 9-1 on aggregate. Robbie Fowler scored on his return to the first team after his spat with Phil Thompson, while French midfielder Bernard Diomède played his fifth and final reds game. Our other goals came from Jamie Redknapp, Emile Heskey and an own goal from ex-Manchester United player Mark Wilson. Cyril’s century 1951 – Forward Cyril Done reached a century of reds senior games in our goalless top-flight draw with Burnley at Turf Moor. 2021 – We beat Burnley 2-0 at Anfield, in front of a sell-out crowd for the first time since March 2020, due to previous COVID restrictions. Diogo Jota headed us in front, before both sies had goals ruled out for offside. Sadio Mané secured the victory after the break. On the same day, midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain became a father for the first time, a son. Meanwhile, ex-reds reserves centre-half Conor Masterson joined Cambridge United on loan from Queens Park Rangers, scoring once in 21 outings for the U’s. Espanyol player as they lost 3-2 to Stéphane Henchoz’s Switzerland in a friendly in Basel. 2007 – Future red Joe Allen scored on his debut for Wales Under-21’s as they won a friendly 4-3 in Sweden. On the same day, future reds loanee Victor Moses nabbed a brace as England Under-17’s thumped New Zealand 5-0 in a World Championship Finals group game in South Korea, with future red James Milner playing for England Under-21’s. Three for the boss 1943 - Future reds boss Don Welsh bagged a treble as we beat Everton 5-2 in a wartime friendly at Goodison Park. Billy Liddell and Jack Balmer added our others. Robbie again 2002 - Robbie Keane netted in his fourth consecutive international, winning his final cap as a Leeds United player as the Republic of Ireland won a friendly in Finland 3-0. Sami Hyypiä, Jari Litmanen and ex-red Jason McAteer all also featured, with the latter captaining the side as he won his fiftieth cap, although some counts place this as his 49th due to a disputed game against a Mexico XI in 2000. Bruno l’international 2002 - Bruno Cheyrou made his senior international debut for France, as a late substitute for Lilian Thuram in their 1-1 draw with Tunisia in Rades. Future red Djibril Cissé also featured. On the same day, Øyvind Leonhardsen won his final cap as a Tottenham Hotspur player, and 79th in total, as Norway lost 1-0 to the Netherlands in a friendly in Oslo. Strikers on the move 2019 – Daniel Sturridge signed for Trabzonspor after netting an impressive 67 times in 160 reds games since arriving from Chelsea for £12m in January 2013. He was released the following March after scoring seven times in sixteen outings. 2008 – Djibril Cissé joined Sunderland on loan from Olympique de Marseille. He bagged eleven goals in 38 games for the Mackems that season. 2001 - King Kenny’s son Paul Dalglish re-joined Wigan Athletic on loan from Norwich City. Gary Shaw scored for the Villains with Ian Rush equalising before the break. Future red Mark Walters netted before Jan Mølby’s late leveller. However, there was still time for Nigel Spink to save a Rush spot-kick. 1965 – We won 3-1 at Leicester City with Geoff Strong adding to a Roger Hunt brace. For Shanks 1974 – An informal dinner party in honour of the retired Bill Shankly was staged at St. George’s Hotel. The event was sponsored by the reds players and labelled ‘Thank You Boss’. The menu included Cured Kop Cod and Clear Mersey Soup, with one of the accompanying wines being from “a Shankley [sic] vintage year” of 1972, curiously a year in which he failed to lead us to silverware. Also in international action 1990 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen played for Norway Under-21’s as they beat Sweden 2-0 in a friendly in Tromsø. 1999 – Future red Igor Bišcan featured for Croatia in their 2-1 defeat of Malta in a European Championships qualifier in Zagreb.
