Crouchie at the treble 2007 - Peter Crouch scored the perfect hat-trick of right-foot, header and left-foot shot as we thumped Arsenal 4-1 at Anfield to gain some measure of revenge for having been dumped out of both the FA and League Cups by the Gunners in L4 already that season. John Arne Riise played his 200th League game, while Daniel Agger grabbed the other goal, with William Gallas on target for the visitors. This was George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks’ first game as owners of the reds. 1969 - We were held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal at Anfield. Tommy Smith converted a penalty at the second try, as Bob Paisley was on the field at the time of his first successful attempt, treating the injured Alun Evans. Triple debutants Three players have made their reds bows on this day over the years, all in League matches. 1984 - John Wark scored on his debut in a 2-0 win at Watford, our first League victory there, with Ian Rush also netting. 1990 - Ronnie Rosenthal made his reds debut in a 3-2 home win over Southampton with ex-red Jimmy Case giving the visitors the lead after Paul Rideout had equalised, when John Barnes and Ian Rush struck to add to a Russell Osman own goal. 1992 - Don Hutchinson started his Liverpool career in a 4-0 home victory over Notts County, with Michael Thomas, Steve McManaman, Ian Rush all on target and Barry Venison bagging his third and last goal for the club. Consecutive runs 1996 - Robbie Fowler scored in his seventh consecutive FA Cup round, as we beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Old Trafford in the Semi-final. He netted a brace to take him to sixteen strikes in his last fourteen outings, with Jason McAteer also on the scoresheet in the final minute. 1951 - Huddersfield Town won for the third consecutive League season at Anfield, this time 4-1, with inside-forward Jack Haigh grabbing our consolation, his third and last reds strike. Left-back Eddie Spicer put through his own net in the final minute. Jimmy Glazzard bagged one of his five goals against the reds, with Vic Metcalfe netting one of his six past us and Harold Hassal also on target. Failed penalties This has not been a good day for our penalty takers. 1973 - Pat Jennings made a double save from Tommy Smith’s spot-kick as we were held 1-1 by Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, having already saved one from Kevin Keegan in the first half. Keegan netted our goal in the meantime. 1979 - Terry McDermott’s penalty hit a post and bounced away with the scores at 1-1 in our Maine Road FA Cup Semi-final with Manchester United. The game ended 2-2, with Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen on target, and we were knocked out in the replay at Goodison five days later. Most recently 2019 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino nodding us ahead early on. Lucas Moura equalised after the break, but Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris failed to hold a last-minute Mohamed Salah header with the ball going into the net off Toby Alderweireld to send us back to the top of the table. 2018 – We won 2-1 at Crystal Palace despite falling behind to an early Luka Milivojević penalty. Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah both struck after the break to secure victory in what was Jürgen Klopp’s hundredth League game in charge of the reds. 2013 - We won 2-1 at Aston Villa in an Easter Sunday game, after falling behind to a Christian Benteke strike, one of his seven goals past us to date. Jordan Henderson levelled the scores before Steven Gerrard converted a penalty. Up against Leeds 1965 - We discovered our opponents for the FA Cup Final when a Billy Bremner header handed Leeds United a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in their Semi-final replay at the City Ground in Nottingham. 1906 - We featured in another FA Cup Semi-final, losing 2-0 to eventual winners Everton at Villa Park, thanks to second-half goals from Walter Abbott and Harold Hardman. We have since won all six derbies at this stage or later of the competition. Beating the Mancs 2001 - We beat Manchester United 2-0 in the League at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard and Robbie Fowler scoring past the hapless Fabien Barthez, with Danny Murphy being sent off. 1985 - We lost our other meeting with United on this day, going down 1-0 at home thanks to a goal from Frank Stapleton. Top of the table 1986 - We headed the League table for the first time that season after a 2-0 Easter Monday defeat of Manchester City at Anfield, thanks to a brace from Steve McMahon. Signing on 2011 – Future reds keeper Ádám Bogdán signed a new contract with Bolton Wanderers, having signed from Vasas in his native Hungary in August 2007. 2015 - Winger Ryan Kent signed a new contract, with his eventful year continuing with a first-team debut at Brisbane Roar in July followed by a loan move to Coventry City. He was recalled in January 2016 by Jürgen Klopp, making his only senior appearance in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Exeter City that month. He moved on to Rangers for £7m in September 2019 after a successful season on loan. Red centurions 1956 – Left-winger Alan A’Court and left-half Geoff Twentyman both played their hundredth reds games as we beat Bristol City 2-1 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Alan Arnell and John Evans, with a late penalty, got on the scoresheet with John Atyeo bagging one of his five goals past us. 1962 – Left-half Tommy Leishman reached a century of appearances for the reds as we lost 1-0 in a Second Division match at Luton Town. 1934 – We defeated Derby County 4-2 in L4. Berry Nieuwenhuys bagged a brace with Tommy Johnson also scoring inside the first twenty minutes. On the same day, Ian Rush netted as Wales beat Belgium 2-0 in Cardiff, playing alongside ex-red Dean Saunders. 2009 – Future reds forward Daniel Sturridge won his only cap for England Under-20’s in their 2-0 defeat of Italy at Loftus Road. On the same day, David N’Gog featured for France Under-21’s as they beat England 2-0 in Nottingham, with future red James Milner also in action. Future reds Joe Allen, Mario Balotelli and Raul Meireles all also played for their countries that day. Stan from a corner 1993 - Ex-red Steve Staunton scored direct from a corner for the Republic of Ireland for the second time, having achieved the same feat against Portugal ten months earlier. Fellow ex-reds Ray Houghton and Jim Magilton both also played as they beat Northern Ireland 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Lansdowne Road. Meanwhile, John Barnes and future reds Nigel Clough and Paul Ince played in England’s 2-0 win in Turkey. Vlad on target 1999 - Future red Vladimír Šmicer scored the winner as the Czech Republic won 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Scotland. Ex-red Don Hutchison made his debut in the same game, while Patrik Berger also featured and future red Gary McAllister won his 57th and final cap. On the same day, Dean Saunders won his first cap as an SL Benfica player as Wales lost 2-0 in another qualifier in Switzerland, with Stéphane Henchoz winning his final cap while with Blackburn Rovers. Future reds Craig Bellamy and Paul Jones also played. Meanwhile, future reds Nicolas Anelka, Markus Babbel, Dietmar Hamann, Sami Hyypiä, Jari Litmanen and Bolo Zenden also played for their countries. 2004 - Henchoz also represented his country in their 1-0 friendly defeat in Greece. Derby joy 1945 - Billy Liddell grabbed the only goal of the game as we won a Wartime League match at Goodison Park that also counted towards the Wartime League Cup. Red endings 1898 – Half-back Barney Battles played his sixth and final reds game, the only one of his second spell at Anfield. Fred Geary bagged his fourteenth and last reds goal with Andrew McCowie also on target as we were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw at home by Bury. Forward Bobby Colvin was also playing his final reds game, although he had managed to rack up just three senior appearances, while defender John Holmes played his 44th and last game for us. William Brimblecombe struck twice for the visitors. 1894 – Inside-right John Givens headed in his third and final reds goal, the only score in our Second Division trip to Grimsby Town. 1952 – Left-back Tom Rogers died. He signed from Rossendale United in April 1907, playing forty times without scoring in five years with the reds. 1961 – We beat Bristol Rovers 3-0 in a home Second Division encounter, with half-back Johnny Wheeler bagging his 23rd and last reds goal. Roger Hunt and Dave Hickson were also on target. First and last caps 2004 - Brad Friedel won his 82nd and final cap for the USA, keeping a clean sheet as they beat Jerzy Dudek’s Poland 1-0 in Plock. On the same day, Jari Litmanen won his last cap in his second spell as an Ajax player, his 85th in total. He also scored as Finland won a friendly 2-1 in Malta, with Sami Hyypiä also playing. Paul Jones won his first cap as a Wolverhampton Wanderers player on the same day as Wales won 2-1 in Hungary. Ex-red Gareth Roberts also featured, with future red Ragnar Klavan also in international action. Steven Gerrard was on the losing side for England for the first time on the same day, skippering them for the first time to a 1-0 friendly defeat in Sweden. This was his fourth cap at this level, and first as a reds player. 2011 – Sterling played for England Under-17’s as they beat Spain 2-1 in a European Championships Elite Round qualifier in Belgium, with fellow red Brad Smith also featuring 2012 – Future red Mohamed Salah scored in Egypt’s 4-0 friendly defeat of Chad in Sudan. 2014 – Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-17’s as they beat Italy 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in the Czech Republic, with fellow future red Joe Gomez also playing. 2018 – Future red Fábio Carvalho scored his second and last goal for England Under-16’s as they drew 3-3 with Brazil. Other reds games 1975 – We lost 2-0 at Stoke City with Terry Conroy bagging two of his four goals against the reds, including a penalty. 1928 – Middlesbrough held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield with Gordon Hodgson bagging our goal. 1923 – Harry Chambers netted the only goal late on of our trip to Birmingham City. 1900 – Tommy Robertson was on target as we won 1-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Ray the dad 1978 – Keeper Ray Clemence became a father to Stephen, who went on to have a successful football career with Tottenham Hotspur, Birmingham City and Leicester City. In charge 2016 – Former reds Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was appointed Head Coach of Valencia for the remainder of the season, following the sacking of Gary Neville. 2021 - Daniel Agger was appointed Manager of Danish second tier side Herfølge Boldklub Køge. Also in international action 1988 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they beat West Germany on penalties in their Four Nations Tournament Semi-final in Berlin. 1997 – Ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal featured in Israel’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying win in Luxembourg. 2016 – Future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France Under-17’s in their 1-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Iceland in Biarritz, with Bernard Diomède in charge of the winning side.

The return of the king 2011 – Roy Hodgson left as Manager “by mutual consent”, with Kenny Dalglish resuming the hot seat on a caretaker basis. Hodgson had led us to just thirteen wins in 31 games, with the King restoring the club’s pride and ethos, although he was sacked in May 2012. Carra makes his debut 1997 - Jamie Carragher made his reds bow as a substitute for Rob Jones in our 2-1 defeat at Middlesbrough in a Coca-Cola Cup Fifth Round tie. Steve McManaman grabbed our consolation, while Stig Inge Bjørnebye was making his hundredth reds appearance. Departure of a striking sensation 1936 - South African striker Gordon Hodgson was sold to Aston Villa for £3,000. He had bagged a club record eighteen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games since signing from Transvaal in November 1925, although he was unable to claim a medal in his time at Anfield. He only stayed at Villa Park for a year before joining Leeds United. Tchau Phil 2018 – Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho joined Barcelona for an initial, eye-watering £105m fee, comfortably a reds club record. He had signed from Internazionale in January 2013 for £8.5m, bagging 54 goals in 201 appearances. Fielding the kids 2017 – Our youngest ever starting eleven, aged on average 21 years and 296 days, was held to a goalless draw by Plymouth Argyle in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield. We won the replay but fell at the next hurdle to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Happy birthdays 1953 - Hughie McAuley was born in Bootle. He moved to Melwood to become Reserve Team Manager just before the start of the 2002/03 season, working as a Coach at that level with Gary Ablett, before taking charge of the Under-18’s back at the Academy. He had previously been a regular in our reserves in the early 1970’s, before working with the Academy on a full-time basis since June 1990. He played a major role in our FA Youth Cup triumph in 1996 and helped to develop players including Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen.. He left the club in the summer of 2009. 1947 - Former reserves forward Ted MacDougall was born in Inverness. He signed pro terms on his nineteenth birthday in 1966 but never made our first-team, moving on to York City for £5,000 in 1967. He enjoyed his greatest success with Norwich City, for whom he banged in 66 goals in 138 games. 1949 – Forward Steve Peplow was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his seventeenth birthday and struck nineteen goals for the reserves in 1968/69, but only played three senior games, without finding the back of the net. He left for Swindon Town in June 1971 after a successful loan spell there. 1991 – Former Academy forward Marvin Pourié was born in Werne in Germany. He arrived from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2007 at the age of sixteen, scoring twelve times in his first year with the Under-18’s but returned to Germany in January 2009, joining Schalke 04. 1999 – Polish keeper Kamil Grabara was born in Ruda Śląska. He arrived in the summer of 2016 from Ruch Chorzów, making it to the first-team bench once before moving on to F.C. København in July 2021. 1884 - Robert Blanthorne was born in Birkenhead. He only played twice for the first team, at the end of the 1906/07 season after signing from Birkenhead in the second half of the campaign. 1932 - Left-back Tom Wilkie died. He struck once in 64 reds appearances after signing from Heart Of Midlothian in January 1895, moving on to Portsmouth in 1899. 1869 - James Kelso was born in Cardross. He only played one senior reds game, in a 4-0 Lancashire League defeat of Bury at Anfield in September 1892, and sadly committed suicide aged just 29, back in his native Scotland. Stewart’s treble 1910 – Inside-right Jimmy Stewart scored a hat-trick as we thumped Chelsea 5-1 at Anfield. Jack Parkinson added a brace. Debutants galore 2016 – Winger Ryan Kent and left-back Joe Maguire played their only senior reds games, with centre-half Tiago Ilori, winger Sheyi Ojo and midfielder Kevin Stewart also debuting as a very inexperienced side drew 2-2 at League Two side Exeter City in the FA Cup Third Round as Christian Benteke skippered the side for the only time. We twice fell behind, but the only reds goals from forward Jerome Sinclair and left-back Brad Smith drew us level each time. Most recently 2021 – We won an FA Cup Third Round tie 4-1 behind closed doors at a COVID-struck Aston Villa. Sadio Mané bagged a brace with Gini Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah both also on target. On the same day, ex-red Gary Mackay-Steven signed for Heart Of Midlothian, netting four times in eighteen appearances in his first campaign back in Scotland. Red departures 1955 – Forward Fred Geary died. He signed from Everton for £60 in May 1895, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. 2010 - Andrea Dossena joined SSC Napoli for €4.25m. He had struck twice in 31 reds games after signing from Udinese for £7m in July 2008. On the same day, centre-half Zak Whitbread left Millwall for Norwich City after four goals in 119 games for the Lions. 2020 – Young midfielder Isaac Christie-Davies joined Cercle Brugge Koninklijke Sportvereniging on loan, having played just one senior reds game. He netted on his debut in a friendly, but failed to make a senior appearance, moving on permanently to Barnsley in September 2020. Stumbling towards Cardiff 2003 - Two late Michael Tonge strikes gave Sheffield United the first leg advantage in our Worthington Cup Semi-final at Bramall Lane, after Neil Mellor’s first senior goal had opened the scoring. We, of course, turned things around in the second leg, to progress to our ninth League Cup Final. More managerial ins and outs 1997 - Kevin Keegan resigned as Manager of Newcastle United for the first time. He had been in charge for nearly five years, guiding them to the First Division title in his first full season in charge, and then to within a whisker of the Premiership in 1996. 2001 - Nigel Spackman was appointed First Division Barnsley’s boss. He was in charge for nine months before being sacked. 2009 - Nigel Clough took over as Manager of Derby County, as a replacement for Paul Jewell. He remained in charge until being sacked in September 2013. Bill’s century 1949 – Bill Jones played his hundredth reds game, putting through his own net as we drew an FA Cup third Round tie 2-2 at Nottingham Forest. We were two goals behind at half time, but Willie Fagan and Bob Paisley both struck late on, before the match headed into extra time. The Shrimpers again 1958 - Right-back John Molyneux struck his first reds goal as we beat Southend United 3-2 in an FA Cup Third Round replay, as well as putting through his own net. Centre-half Dick White scored his only reds goal, with Tony Rowley netting his 38th and last goal for the club. Sammy McCrory bagged the other goal for the Shrimpers. We made it to the Sixth Round that season before falling to Blackburn Rovers. The lights go out in Bristol 1994 - Our FA Cup Third Round match at Bristol City was called off during the second half, due to floodlight failure. We were eventually knocked out by the First Division side in an Anfield replay. Mixed fortunes against Rovers We have faced Blackburn Rovers three times on this day in history, winning twice in the FA Cup. 1898 - However, we lost the first meeting 2-1, when our strike came from a William Ball own goal in a First Division match at Ewood Park. Forward Bobby Colvin made the first of his three reds appearances in this game. 1983 - We won away from home by the same score in the Third Round, with David Hodgson and Ian Rush on target. Unfortunately, we only reached the Fifth Round, going out at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. 1991 - Ray Houghton, Ian Rush and Steve Staunton were on the scoresheet as we won a Third Round replay 3-0 at Anfield. Steve McMahon was sent off in this game, as Glenn Hysén had been in the drawn first meeting. We went as far as the Fifth Round again that year before being knocked out by Everton. Evans on target and off 1955 - We drew 1-1 at Lincoln City in an FA Cup Third Round tie, with goalscorer John Evans sent off. We won the replay four days later, after extra time, as we made it to the Fifth Round before being knocked out by Huddersfield Town at Anfield. No goals against Palace We have twice faced Crystal Palace in the FA Cup Third Round on this day in history, with both matches ending goalless. 1938 – We were held at Selhurst Park in our first ever meeting with the Eagles, making it as far as the Fifth Round when we were knocked out by Huddersfield Town. 1977 – We drew in L4 when Ray Clemence made his 400th appearance for the reds. We of course reached the Final that year. On our way to Wembley 1974 - We won an FA Cup Third Round replay 2-0 at Doncaster Rovers in a game that kicked off at 1:30pm on a Tuesday, due to the three-day working week, having only just survived the first game at Anfield. Steve Heighway and Peter Cormack netted as we set off towards our second Cup triumph. Named the best 2019 - Mohamed Salah was named as CAF African Footballer of the Year for the second consecutive time after a calendar year in which he had netted in the UEFA Champions League Final, amongst his 24 goals in 51 reds games. Naby Keïta and Sadio Mané were also named in the Team of the Year. 2024 - Dominik Szoboszlai was named Hungarian male Athlete of the Year for the second time, having won it three years earlier. Jermaine the record breaker 1999 - Jermaine Pennant signed for the Gunners from Notts County in a £2m deal, becoming the most expensive teenager in English football history, aged just sixteen. He only grabbed three goals for Arsenal, but they all came in his first League start as he made just 26 senior appearances, although he only played one other League game from the off. Other reds games 1972 – We lost 1-0 at Leicester City with Ally Brown heading in very early. 1966 – Ron Yeats scored a diving header, the only goal of our trip to Highbury against Arsenal. 1921 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. We won the replay, but were knocked out in the next round by Newcastle United. Ex-red Tom Miller opened the scoring, but Harry Chambers nabbed our equaliser. Titi on target 1997 – Future red Titi Camara struck for Guinea as they lost a friendly 2-1 to Ivory Coast in Bouaké. A new contract 2007 - Young midfielder Danny Guthrie signed a new contract until June 2009. He played just seven senior reds games before being sold to Newcastle United for £2.25m in July 2008. A final cap 1995 - Rigobert Song won his eighth and final cap as a Tonnerre Yaoundé player as Cameroon were held to a goalless draw by Malawi in Douala. 2013 – Oussama Assaidi played for Morocco as they held Zambia to a goalless draw in a friendly in Johannesburg. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah featured in Egypt’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Tunisia in Cairo.

A treble for Sir Roger 1964 - Roger Hunt scored a hat-trick as we thumped Burnley 5-1 in a top-flight meeting at Turf Moor. Geoff Strong and Chris Lawler both struck their first reds goals while half-back Willie Stevenson reached a century of reds outings. Half a millennium for Stevie 2009 - Steven Gerrard played his 500th reds game as we held Blackburn Rovers to a goalless Premiership draw at Ewood Park. The closest we came was when David N’Gog rattled the crossbar. 1925 – Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers struck in the ninetieth minute as we held Blackburn Rovers to a 1-1 draw in a top-flight meeting at Ewood Park. Ted Harper bagged one of his five goals against the reds. Arnell off the mark fast 1953 - Forward Alan Arnell scored on his reds debut as we beat Blackpool 5-2 at Anfield. Right-winger Jimmy Payne netted while appearing for the 200th time with Sammy Smyth also on the scoresheet and Alan A’Court bagging a brace. Half-back Barry Wilkinson was also making his reds bow. Ernest Taylor struck the last two of his five goals past us in this game. Carra’s error 1998 - Jamie Carragher scored an own goal as we lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur. He also put through his own net in the return fixture at Anfield later that season. Patrik Berger grabbed our goal at White Hart Lane, with Ruel Fox also netting for the home side.
