Red trebles 2000 - Michael Owen scored a first half hat-trick past former team-mate David James as we defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield. He therefore became our first ever player to score two first-half hat-tricks in League games. Martin Peters scored for the Irons, one of his fourteen goals past us, with all the goals coming before the hour mark. 1986 - We also thumped the Hammers on their home turf when substitute Kenny Dalglish struck twice in a 5-2 victory, with Ronnie Whelan, Craig Johnston and Ian Rush also on target. Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen made his senior debut for the Hammers in this game. Ray Stewart put the home side in front inside ten minutes, with Tony Cottee bagging the first of his eight goals against the reds. Macca signs on 1985 - Steve McMahon signed from Aston Villa for £375,000, becoming the first arrival direct from Villa Park. He was Kenny Dalglish’s first signing, winning three League titles, the FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Manchester City in December 1991 after fifty goals in 277 games. Births and deaths 1892 - Scottish keeper Ken Campbell was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Cambuslang Rangers in May 1911 and took over from Sam Hardy in the reds goal, playing 142 times including the 1914 FA Cup Final, before being replaced after the war by the great Elisha Scott. On exactly the same day, outside-left Albert Pearson was born in Tynemouth. He netted four times in 51 reds games after signing from Port Vale in March 1919, returning there two years later. 1988 - Jimmy Ryan was born in Maghull. The central midfielder joined League Two outfit Accrington Stanley in August 2008, having featured in both of our recent victorious FA Youth Cup campaigns, but failed to break into the first–team squad. 1948 – Half-back Bill Keech died. He played just six Second Division games in late 1895, having signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s that October, helping us to claim the title that season. He later played as a forward for Leicester Fosse, before returning to the half-back line with Queens Park Rangers’ first professional team in the Southern League. 2003 – Inside-forward Harold Jones died. He joined the reds in January 1952, but only made one senior appearance in a 5-1 thumping at Anfield by Preston North End in September 1953. He moved on to Rhyl in June 1954. A goalscoring debut 1902 - Inside-right George Livingstone scored on his reds bow as we beat Blackburn Rovers 5-2 at Anfield in our first game of the season, with Sam Raybould and Jack Cox both grabbing braces. Inside-forward Edgar Chadwick also debuted in this game, with Walter Whittaker nabbing two of his six goals against the reds. Four against 1913 - Danny Shea scored four of his ten goals against the reds as Blackburn Rovers thumped us 6-2 at Ewood Park, with Tom Miller netting both our goals and Bob Ferguson missing a penalty for the reds. Eddie Latheron also scored for the home side with Billy Bradshaw converting from the spot. Red centurions 1954 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 200th League game for the reds as we lost a Second Division fixture 3-0 at Bristol Rovers. Geoff Bradford netted the first three of his five goals past us. 1950 – George Kay took charge of the reds for the 300th time in the League as we defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in L4 with Albert Stubbins and Jack Balmer on the scoresheet. 1909 – We won 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers with Jack Parkinson nabbing a brace, including his fiftieth League goal for the reds. Managerial moves 1989 - Mark Lawrenson was appointed Manager of Fourth Division Peterborough United. They finished ninth at the end of that season, and he stayed in the job for fourteen months, before being sacked. 2004 - Graeme Souness resigned as Blackburn Rovers boss after four and a half years in charge. He took up the vacant managerial post at Newcastle United the following week, but was sacked after seventeen months at St. James’ Park. Out with the old, in with the new 1995 - John Barnes won his 79th and final cap in England’s goalless friendly draw with Colombia at Wembley. He had scored eleven times for his country. Jamie Redknapp made his senior international debut in the same game, while Nick Barmby won his first cap as a Middlesbrough player. Steve McManaman also played. On the same day, Markus Babbel grabbed his only international goal as Germany beat Georgia 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Nuremberg. Fellow future red Christian Ziege netted his first goal for the German senior side in the same game. Vlad on target again and again 2003 - Vladimír Šmicer struck in his third consecutive Czech Republic game for the second time, with clubmate Milan Baroš also on target in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying win in Belarus. 2002 - Milan bagged a brace with Vlad also scoring in their 5-0 friendly defeat of FR Yugoslavia in Prague, despite having broken a toe in the first minute of the game. 1997 - Future red Šmicer also netted for his country as they won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in the Faroe Islands. 1998 - Šmicer grabbed the only goal of a Euro 2000 qualifier in the same country, with future reds clubmate Patrik Berger also playing. Meanwhile, Christian Benteke scored while winning his last Under-21’s cap as a Royal Standard de Liège player in Belgium’s 4-1 qualifying win over Azerbaijan in Antwerp. Crouchie on target again 2006 - Peter Crouch scored in his third consecutive England game for the second time as they won 1-0 in the FYR Macedonia, taking him to eleven international strikes in 2006, a national record for a calendar year. Joe Cole bagged a brace from off the bench, his final England goals as a Chelsea player, as they beat Andorra 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Barcelona. Thommo off the mark 1973 – Phil Thompson bagged his first reds goal in our 2-0 home defeat of Derby County, with Kevin Keegan adding a late penalty. Ray Clemence was playing his 200th reds game. 1979 – We thumped Tranmere Rovers 4-0 in a League Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield after the first game ended goalless. Phil Thompson struck his thirteenth and final goal for the club in his 300th outing before Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace. David Fairclough was also on target, with all the goals coming in the second half. For Jamie 2010 – Jamie Carragher’s testimonial took place at Anfield in front of more than 35,000, with the reds beating an Everton side 4-1. Luis García opened the scoring with Carra converting a spot-kick for the reds shortly before half time. Joe Cole made the score 3-0 with his first reds strike but Jamie then scored from the spot for Everton! Nathan Eccleston also opened his account for the reds. Babb strikes 1996 - Phil Babb notched his only reds strike, the only goal of the game against his former club Coventry City at Highfield Road, in what was Roy Evans’ hundredth League game in charge. 1976 - We also faced the Sky Blues, winning 3-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan, David Johnson and John Toshack. Mick Ferguson had shocked the home side by scoring in the first minute. Happy birthdays 1891 - Forward Fred Pagnam was born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. He signed from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. 1930 – Right-half Roy Saunders was born in Salford. He signed from Hull City in May 1948 and netted once in 146 reds appearances before joining Swansea Town in March 1959 in part-exchange for forward Des Palmer, who never featured for our first team. He was the father of 1990’s reds striker Dean and died in January 2009. 1980 – Michael Beale was born in Bromley, London. He joined the Academy as an Under-15’s coach in 2003, eventually progressing to be in charge of the Under-21’s. He left for São Paulo in January 2017, returning to the reds later that year for a brief spell before joining Steven Gerrard at Rangers. 1988 - Midfielder Ryan Flynn was born in Falkirk. He was awarded with a full-time contract at Melwood in the summer of 2006 having impressed in the previous season’s victorious FA Youth Cup campaign, including notching a goal in the Final. He made a loan move to his hometown club permanent in September 2009. The Bridge opens 1905 - The reds helped Chelsea to open Stamford Bridge, taking part in the first ever game played there. Unfortunately, we started as we meant to continue at the Bridge, losing 4-0 in a friendly encounter. 1909 - We visited there again, with outside-left John McDonald and inside-right Jimmy Stewart making their reds bows as we lost 2-1 in a season opener, with Joe Hewitt nabbing our consolation. George Hilsdon’s penalty was the last of his five goals against the reds, with Jimmy Windridge also netting. An unhappy millennium 1971 - We lost 2-0 in a League game at Tottenham Hotspur in what was our 3,000th first-class fixture, with Martin Chivers nabbing one of his seven goals past us and Martin Peters scoring one of his fourteen. A fife and drum band playing “The Conquering Hero” welcomed the team back into Liverpool. The plan was to lift Club Secretary Tom Watson shoulder high in celebration, but as the Liverpool Echo said, “No arms were long enough to grip his girth.” However, our two inter-war meetings with the Baggies both resulted in 2-1 defeats. 1922 - Harry Beadles nabbed our consolation at Anfield, with Howard Gregory bagging a brace for the Baggies. 1933 - Tom Bradshaw was on target at The Hawthorns, with forward Ted Crawford playing his eighth and last reds game. The reds included Brian Kettle and Phil Thompson. Testimonial for Shanks 1975 - A testimonial match for Bill Shankly was played at Anfield. Emlyn Hughes and Jimmy Case both bagged braces, with Alan Waddle and Tommy Smith also on target as the reds beat a Don Revie Select side 6-2. 1992 - We took part in another testimonial, drawing a benefit game for our former reserves forward Wayne Harrison 2-2 at Oldham Athletic. Falling at the final hurdle 2010 – We were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League at the Semi-final stage on away goals by Club Atlético de Madrid, the third time in our history we had fallen foul of this rule in Europe. Alberto Aquilani opened the scoring just before the break with his second and final goal for the club, with the tie having to go into extra time. Yossi Benayoun scored his 29th and last reds goal early in the additional half hour, but Diego Forlán then bagged a crucial away goal, the last of his four past us. Philipp Degen played his thirteenth and final reds game. King Kenny starts out 1968 - Kenny Dalglish signed as a professional for Celtic. He helped them to four League titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup, bagging 167 goals in 322 games before moving to Anfield for £440,000 in August 1977. 2018 – Roberto Firmino signed a new contract, having scored fifty times in 140 reds games to that point. 1957 – Full-back Allan Jones and winger Johnny Morrissey both signed pro terms with the reds. Morrissey struck six times in 37 outings before crossing the park to Everton for £10,000 in September 1962, for whom he scored fifty times in 314 appearances, helping them to two League titles. Wembley disappointment 1950 - We lost our second FA Cup Final, this time 2-0 to Arsenal with Reg Lewis scoring in each half, the last of his five strikes against us, despite the reds having beaten the Gunners twice in the League that season. It was to be another fifteen years before we finally won the famous trophy. We had to wear blue socks in this match, due to a mix-up over changing from the usual red ones to white, with neither side playing in their regular home strips. Off the mark 1995 – Steve Harkness struck the first of his three reds goals early on at Norwich City, with Robert Ullathorne equalising soon after. Ian Rush grabbed the winner as we won 2-1, with City on their way down to the Endsleigh League. First caps 1981 - Ronnie Whelan won the first of his 53 Republic of Ireland caps, helping them to a 3-1 victory over Czechoslovakia at Lansdowne Road as a substitute. Transfer deadline day drama 2011 – We broke our record transfer twice in the same day, first when Luis Suárez arrived from Ajax for a fee of £22.8m. Two cups on the same day 1982 - We claimed two trophies - the old Football League Cup and the new Milk Cup trophy. Ian Rush added a third, as Spurs suffered their first defeat at Wembley, and their first loss in nine domestic cup finals. Skipper Graeme Souness lifted the old three-handled trophy, while former captain Phil Thompson held the new Milk Cup aloft. Stevie’s derby treble 2012 - Steven Gerrard scored a hat-trick past Everton at Anfield in his 400th League game as we won 3-0, with his third goal being the club’s 300th derby goal. Visiting boss David Moyes was hours from celebrating his tenth anniversary as their Manager, still without having tasted victory at Anfield. On our way to Wembley 1988 - An FA Cup game brought us our best ever result on this day, as we won 4-0 on a muddy pitch at Manchester City in the Sixth Round in front of the live TV cameras, on our way to the Final. Ray Houghton, Craig Johnston and John Barnes all netted, to add to a Peter Beardsley penalty, with Johnston’s strike being our 500th in the competition. This was our seventh consecutive away victory, and the tenth time we had bagged four in a game that season. 1915 - We also beat City when inside-forward Arthur Metcalf nabbed his 28th and last goal for the club. Fred Pagnam and Tom Miller also struck in a 3-2 First Division win at Anfield as centre-half Bob Ferguson played his 103rd and final reds game. Horace Barnes bagged one of his nine goals past us, with Fred Howard netting the last of his nine against the reds, in just five outings. Heading towards Madrid 2019 – We won 3-1 at Bayern München in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie, following the goalless first game at Anfield. Sadio Mané put us ahead but Joël Matip put through his own net before the break. Virgil van Dijk and Mané both then headed in after half time. Milan in Barcelona 2002 - Milan Baroš made his reds debut as a substitute in our goalless Champions League draw with Barcelona in the Camp Nou. This result left us needing to beat Roma by two clear goals at Anfield to be sure of a place in the Quarter-finals. Nick Barmby came on as a late replacement for Steven Gerrard, his 58th and final reds appearance, although he sat on the bench on a further five occasions that season. Emile in front of his old boss 2003 - Emile Heskey drew us level at Martin O’Neill’s Celtic after Henrik Larsson had put the Hoops into an early lead. This UEFA Cup Quarter-final first leg tie ended 1-1, but was marred by El-Hadji Diouf spitting into the crowd. Unfortunately, the Scottish side won the Anfield return 2-0. Mixed derby outcomes 1979 - Andy King scored one of only four opposition goals in the League at Anfield that season, as we were held in this derby encounter. Kenny Dalglish bagged our goal on his hundredth reds appearance as well as suffering an injury, along with Phil Thompson and David Johnson. 1994 – Dave Watson headed the visitors in front in the 150th League derby before Ian Rush struck just nine seconds after the re-start. Robbie Fowler then netted to secure a 2-1 win, Roy Evans’ only victory over Everton as boss. Tom Chorlton nabbed our goal from the spot, his eighth and final reds goal, with Willis Rippon bagging a brace for the visitors, including a penalty. 1920 - Keeper Tom Armstrong played his only reds game as we drew 2-2 with The Wednesday at Hillsborough in another First Division fixture. Dick Forshaw and Donald McKinlay struck within the last ten minutes. Incomings 1896 – Half-back Barney Battles arrived on loan from Celtic. He won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for just six weeks, featuring in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. He re-signed from Dundee in March 1898 for £20 but only played one more game before joining Celtic for a third spell seven months later. On the same day, Scottish half-back Tom Cleghorn signed from Blackburn Rovers, scoring once in seventy games before moving to Portsmouth in August 1899. 1969 – Left-back Alec Lindsay signed from his hometown club Bury for £67,000. Goalscoring beginning and end 1929 – Centre-half David Davidson bagged the first of his two reds goals late on as we beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield after eight games without a win, with John Lindsay also on target. Vic Watson bagged one of his nine goals against the reds. 1993 – Don Hutchison scored his tenth and last goal for the club, opening the scoring as we won 2-1 at Middlesbrough in our last trip to Ayresome Park. Making an exhibition of themselves 2007 - Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler and Bolo Zenden all played for a Europe XI who lost 4-3 to Manchester United at Old Trafford, in a game played to celebrate the fiftieth anniversaries of the Treaty of Rome and Manchester United in European competition. Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf bagged a brace, including a penalty. Nice one Cyril 1943 - Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we thumped Bury 7-2 at Gigg Lane in a game that counted for both the Wartime League and the War League Cup. Michael Hulligan added a brace, with our other goals coming from Jack Pilling and a Griffiths own goal. Red farewells 1897 – Inside-left Davy Hannah played his 33rd and last reds game as we drew 0-0 with Aston Villa at their Perry Barr ground. 1926 - Fred Baron bagged his seventh and final reds goal. Harry Chambers was also on target as we lost 3-2 at Sunderland in a top-flight encounter. Donald McKinlay missed a penalty, while Dave Halliday scored two of his thirteen goals past us, with Jack Prior also on target. 1958 – Welsh forward Tony Rowley was sold to Third Division side Tranmere Rovers, for whom he continued to score at a rate of one goal every other game. He had bagged a treble on his debut after signing from Stourbridge in October 1953, going on to net 38 times in 61 reds games. 2010 – Keeper Charlie Ashcroft died. He signed for the reds in December 1943 and appeared 89 times before joining Ipswich Town in June 1955. Disappointment at Bramall Lane We have twice lost First Division fixtures at Sheffield United on this day in history. 1954 - Billy Liddell netted our consolation from the spot, his hundredth reds strike, as we lost 3-1. Geoff Twentyman put through his own net, with Joe Shaw and Sam McNab also scoring for the home side as Bob Paisley featured for the 277th and last time. 1965 - We went down 3-0 to send us down to ninth in the table. Alan Birchenall struck one of his four goals past us, with Barry Hartle and Alan Woodward also on target as keeper Tommy Lawrence played his hundredth League game for the reds. Reds keepers in opposition 1920 - Two reds keepers faced each other in an international as Ken Campbell played for Scotland, who beat Ireland, for whom Elisha Scott was making his international debut. The game ended 3-0 at Celtic Park, with fellow red Billy Lacey also playing for the visitors. 1922 - England beat Wales 1-0 in an international at Anfield. Tom Bromilow played for the home side on his club ground. Off on loan 2003 - Jon Otsemobor joined Third Division Hull City on loan. He bagged three goals in nine games for the Tigers before returning to Anfield. 2007 - Centre-back Godwin Antwi joined Accrington Stanley, for whom he made nine League Two outings. 2009 – Former reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Leicester City on loan from Hull City. He played four times for them as they progressed towards the League One title. For the last time 1937 – Forward Jimmy Collins played his seventh and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Preston North End. Vladi on target 1996 - Vladimír Šmicer netted for the Czech Republic Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to Spain in a European Championships qualifier in Granada. On the same day future red Stéphane Henchoz played for Switzerland in their 1-1 friendly draw in Luxembourg. Souey’s debut 1974 - Future red Graeme Souness won his first cap for Scotland Under-23’s as they lost 2-0 to England at St. James’ Park. Other reds games 1999 – We lost 3-2 at Derby County with Robbie Fowler on target, once from the spot. Deon Burton netted for the Rams before Paolo Wanchope bagged the last two of his four goals against the reds. 1996 – Wimbledon held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Steve McManaman and Stan Collymore struck our goals. Efan Ekoku scored for the visitors before Dean Holdsworth nabbed one of his four past us. 1971 – We lost 1-0 at Coventry City with John O’Rourke pouncing after Ray Clemence had pushed a free-kick onto the post. Happy birthday Gary Mac 1964 - Gary McAllister was born in Motherwell. He arrived on a free transfer in July 2000, proving inspirational in the run-in to the treble that season. He netted nine goals in 87 reds games before moving back to Coventry City as Player/Manager in May 2002. He returned to Anfield as a First Team Coach last summer, moving into an ambassadorial role after Brendan Rodgers was sacked. 1896 – Winger Chris Harrington was born in Edge Hill. He signed from South Liverpool in December 1920, failing to score in four senior outings, before returning to his former club the following year. A sad day 1984 - Jack Balmer died in Liverpool. He had bagged 111 goals in 309 reds games after signing from Everton in May 1935, including trebles in three consecutive matches on our way to the League title in 1947. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1899 - Thomas ‘Harry’ Bradshaw died of tuberculosis in Tottenham. He joined from Northwich Victoria in October 1893 and netted 51 times in 138 games for the reds, helping us to our first two Second Division titles and was the first reds player to win senior international honours. He left Anfield to join Tottenham Hotspur in May 1898. 2004 - Left-back Eddie Spicer died. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in World War Two, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and featuring in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 2013 - Forward Wayne Harrison died aged just 46 after suffering from pancreatic cancer. He signed from Oldham Athletic for £250,000 in January 1985 at the age of seventeen, then a record fee for a teenager, although he never made a senior reds appearance before having to retire due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. King Billy’s four 1954 - Billy Liddell scored four goals as we thumped Ipswich Town 6-2 at Anfield in our first season after relegation. Also on the scoresheet were Louis Bimpson and John Evans. Rushie starts out 1979 - Ian Rush signed as a professional for Chester. He bagged seventeen goals in 39 games at Sealand Road, before moving to Anfield for £300,000 the following April. Smiling at a treble 1925 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and the visitors’ Hughie Gallacher each bagged a hat-trick as we beat Newcastle United 6-3 at Anfield.
